Coffee Roasters Co-op are pleased to present an evening with Francisco VanderHoff - a co-founder of Fair Trade.

His idea was so simple – to organize small coffee farmers into co-operatives and build their capacity to produce, transport, process and export their high quality coffee at a fair price. This would allow them to escape the clutches of “coyotes” or intermediaries and give them dignity, control and hope for a better future.

Fair Trade now includes many different products and has great potential as a model for social change. It is also in danger of being hijacked by big business. Join us for a presentation and discussion about the Future of Fair Trade.

Fr. Francisco VanderHoff will share his experience and thoughts on the future of Fair Trade (with an introduction from the Town of Wolfville in Wolfville)

Errol Sharpe of Fernwood Publishing will speak about his recent visit to a Fair Trade coffee community in Mexico

Screening of Wisdom of the Mountains—a short video capturing the spirit and experience of the indigenous Zapotec peoples, Fair Trade coffee farmers in Chayotepec, Mexico

Fair Trade refreshments will be served.

Bravo.
J'aime.

Just before I bring the mood down again, I want to say how grateful I am to Mental Nurse and Mental

Just before I bring the mood down again, I want to say how grateful I am to Mental Nurse and Mental Patient About Town for linking to my blog... and going to find those URLs, I've just seen that some people are doubting my age. I'm not sure whether I should feel flattered or hurt. I started this blog so that I could talk into the void about how I am and how I feel; I never expected anyone to read it and so I've got no reason to lie. I skipped a year and I've been bullied for it and teased and treated like a freak for it, and yes, I'm 14, and yes, my GCSEs start next week. It's also my birthday soon, so I'll be 15 in a couple of weeks.

OK. Vaguely hurt lecture over. Sorry about that. Now to get back on track.

"Who am I?" My friends who do Religion and Philosophy have been freaking over that particular puzzle for a while now, because they'll have to answer it intelligently and thoughtfully on no more than three A4 sides in sixty minutes quite soon. I couldn't do it; that question freaks me out more than it'll ever freak them. I mean, I just don't understand it.

Yeah, I'm a teenager. I'm supposed to go all introspective and self-analytical and wonder about the meaning of life and existence of God (but I generally avoid those last two because they get too big too fast and I get in too deep). I'm supposed to be discovering who I am and what I do, and why I do it and who I do it for. This is the time of my life where I find my identity and develop a real and mature personality. This is transition. In fact... this is 'the transitional period of physical and psychological development between childhood and maturity', if you want to get picky.

And I don't know who I am. I'm with Danny, and I'm sweet like her and I can have a laugh but a nice one, and we study hard but we'll also talk in lessons and muck around - that's who Su is to her - but I'm with Danny and Jess and Dipali, and I'll be mean all of a sudden, and making fun of Danny for a cheap laugh, which isn't nice but I don't seem to be able to help it, that's who I am when I'm with those two - that's Suzy for them. Or with the kids in my year I'm a bit scared of, intimidated by, I go practically mute and sit quietly reading in the corner somewhere, trying to stop them looking at me. That's who Suzanne is to them.

More examples, easy peasy. My mates from out of school, when we're at band together I'm the loudmouth rebel kid pulling stupid dares, talking back to the adults, being the entertainer. That's who Su is with them. Or karate (brown belt, hell yeah!): before I went up to the senior class I was with all the little kids, like ages five to thirteen. For them Suzanne was the older responsible one, who didn't talk a whole lot but knew all the moves.

It's all so different. Who am I? I'm whoever you want me to be. Or rather, I'm whoever I think you want me to be.

The thought that I might be with Jaz, from out of school, who last saw me running across a road doing little Billy Elliot ballet leaps and laughing like a crazy kid (oh, haha, really funny) and meet up with someone like Alex, who I just avoid and don't speak in front of - who I play submissive to - short-circuits my mind. That can't happen. They're two separate universes. They require Su V.1.0 and Suzanne V.2.0. I'd freeze, I'd block them out, I'd probably step out and let the autopilot version of me take over. Or I'm with Dipali in front of some small mates from karate: I don't know. I'd probably make fun of their hair and then apologise or something. The versions of me they know aren't compatible. None of them are. They don't work together and they mustn't come together. They're personalised to the individual I'm faced with.

And if I can't work out who I should be for them, I'll just pretend I'm a character in a book, or a film, and act the way I think they would. I don't have to be any kind of Suzy. I can be Maximum Ride. I can be Carrie. I can be Hannibal Lecter. But just the manners and charm... not the cannibalism. Of course not.

Our topic for discussion is: "What are the alternatives to Democracy?"

Dr David Van Mill, a lecturer at UWA in political sciences and international relations will give us an introduction to the topic.
Dr Van Mill has published two books, Deliberation, Social Choice and Absolutist Democracy, London, Routledge (2006) and Liberty, Rationality, and Agency in Hobbes's Leviathan, United States of America, State University of New York Press (2001).

Dr Mill share his perspective on Democracy and its possible alternatives with us (after which, we can argue with him!) :)

I really like this idea and will be giving you my outlines of the speeches and what I thought about what they talked about. This is the second one I will look at.

The Speaker

Tom Carroll is a 10 year veteran of the CIA Clandestine Operations. He spent 7 years abroad in the Middle East and since then has become highly published. He focuses on espionage, National Security, Intelligence, and the Middle East. Recently, he has been doing consults for government clients in California.

Counterterrorism (CT)

As we all know, counterterrorism has been high on everybody's list since 9/11 and our intel agencies have taken a leading role in this field. Most intel agencies around the world are well practiced in the field of counterintelligence, which is very similar to counterterrorism. The speaker believes that CT is a subset of CI.

Defensive Counterintelligence (CI) and Comparisons with Defensive CT

Mr. Carroll defines CI as the effort to defeat the intel operations of foreign powers. We can break CI down into two parts, defensive and offensive. Defensive CI includes catching spies inside ones own organization, detect and deter penetrations and espionage, etc. The brunt of these tasks are taken by the security department if one exists. They take on three things: Physical Security, Personnel Security, and Information Technology Security, things like network security, system patches, passwords, and audit trails. All of these security issues provide a strong overlap with Law Enforcement, who solves crimes. Now lets compare Defensive CI with Defensive CT. CT's focus is on the opposition from an enemy attacking. It is very similar to Defensive CI in that the same three securities are crucial. In the US, we are very good at the Defensive side of all of this and it is all perfectly legal under domestic US law. However, some large corporations hesitate to employ vigorous Defensive CI & CT measures. They mainly don't want to because there is an issue concerning the scrutinization of workers. Outsourcing abroad is also a problem of this sort. Companies don't want to come off as racist by employing more strict measures of security. A lot of money is spent on the high tech infrastructure protection even when it only provides a small amount of the total corporate espionage. Most of this fraud comes from insider intrusion because companies turn a blind eye to their people problems.

Offensive CI vs. Offensive CT

Offensive CI is defined as direct attacks on the oppostion's intel services. This part has nothing to do with law enforcement, it involves the penetration of the opposition, deception, and counter-espionage. Basically, you are trying to do to an enemy everything you are trying to stop them from doing. The key is, you cannot wait for the opposition to come to you. The use of moles, penetrations, or agents are absolutely critical for a successful CI mission. Lets compare now to Offensive CT, they are almost the same except you are trying to take out a terror cell instead of an intel service. This is where we can do the real damage to terror cells and also this is where the distinction between foreign and domestic is the most important. the CIA can vigorously pursue CT ops abroad, however, Domestic US ops are strictly limited by law. People in the US have rights and theres only so much our government can do without crossing that line that cannot be crossed, when freedoms are ignored. This is why strong CT programs have no real domestic counterpart. Our intel services have contributed the most to the war on terror, almost all of which happens abroad.

Question

With respect to Defensive CT vs. Offensive CT distinction, where do our relationships with foreign intel services generally fall?

Answer

Liaison Relationships - friendly intel services cooperate with each other

What they help us with is offensive CT, things like going after the terrorist and penetrating cells. They will sometimes provide physical help, by using us to secure buildings or we ask them to do the same, but most of the time, liaison relationships fall in the Offensive category.
