Busy Busy Busy... What I've been working on lately...

My weaving was put on hold for a while so I worked on some of my leather projects. In this bunch I have some promise bands, worn in pairs, one for you and one for your special one. A bicycle seat and drinkholder and even a motorcycle seat. All were fairly easy with the exception of the motorcycle seat which is a very time consuming project not to mention the cost, so enjoy!

WIKIPEDIA: "A couch is an upholstered item of furniture for the comfortable seating of more than one person and typically has an armrest on either side. Where? (Not in a living room). Blue Marlin, Cala Jondal, Ibiza.

Why? Wouldn't it be lovely to have them at your private's beach lounge (ho ho ho... ask your husband for Christmas)? Simply charming.

Jobs I Wouldn't Do

A few weeks ago, Amanda blogged about Morality in Jobs. She asked a question of which the first part was "What job would be most abhorrent to you (on the basis of the principles of the position being against your morals)?". The second part concerned money, but I will ignore that part. This is simply my answer.

I have voluntarily omitted both jobs that I would not want for reasons other than morals (e.g. janitor), as well as things you don't write as is on your tax report, such as prostitute or drug dealer.

Flower shop owner or salesperson. You're probably wondering where the moral dilemma lies in selling pretty flowers to people. The problem does not lie there, but further back, at the source of the flowers. A cosmetics or "beauty products" company. Pollution and waste are enormous, and I cannot talk about cosmetics without talking about the negative image of women (and men) that some companies promote.
A fur or leather producer or seller.
Any company that abuses animals, children or any other living being. That includes those enormous farms that keep thousands of pigs with 2 square feet each.

Oris Watches - A Review Of The BC3

Oris watches are very affordable, beautiful Swiss watches. They feature mechanical movements - some with automatic winding - with a trademark red rotating red rotor. The range of Big Crown watches is a particular favorite of mine and, while I was initially drawn to the Big Crown with Pointer Date collection, I've now shifted to the more modern styling of the BC3 collection.

I had my heart set on the Big Crown with Pointer Date. I wanted a large watch with a black face and black leather strap and this Oris watch seemed to fit the bill, in terms of price and design. There is a choice of case size but, to my mind, the large crown is best complemented by a large case. I liked the largest case in the collection - 40mm model reference. Oris is well known for its pointer date watches and I really liked the red-tipped horseshoe shaped pointer. I loved the simple Arabic numerals at each hour mark and the day numbers on the outer rim.

However, there is one feature I don't like, and that is the hour and minute arms. They seem slightly too ornate. By this I mean, the minute hand has straight sides that taper out slightly before forming a wedge at the top; this wedge is then topped with a slim needle-like pointer. The hour hand is smaller and features straight, slightly outwardly tapered sides that then change into an oval shape that is topped with another needle-like pointer. The overall look of the watch is very nice but I just would prefer simpler hands.

This brings me to the Oris BC3 - the 3 stands for third generation of pilot's watches. This collection is unequivocally modern in design. There are currently two models in the collection; each comes with a matt stainless steel casing, black dial and either a black rubber strap or stainless steel bracelet. Both models come with a day aperture at the 12 o'clock position and a date aperture at the 6 o'clock position.

There are two sizes of case; 40 or 42mm. The shape of the casing is the same for both, with a slightly raised though flat bezel - the Pointer Date watch comes with a fluted bezel. I really like the simpler lines of the case and bezel of the BC3. The simplicity of design is carried through on to the dial. Both the hour and minute arms are the same in design - with the hour being shorter. They are simple straight, thickish and end in 'long' wedges.

The design of the dial differs slightly on the two models. While both have Arabic numerals at each hour, one watch has a small luminescent dot above the numeral (with two above the 12), whereas the other, features dashes (rectangles) above the numerals with two appearing above the 12. My preference is for the dashes, as they better complement the straight, plain arms and general smooth-edge design of the watch.

If you're a lover of big crown, big watches then the big crown collections of Oris watches will certainly appeal. The Big Crown with Pointer Date will be for those who like a more traditionally style of watch but for those like me who want a more contemporary looking watch the Oris BC3 will be the first choice.

Leather

Slidhandsker

De mest almindelige er kraftige handsker med skind på indersiden og stof på ydersiden. Disse bruges typisk til arbejde med jord, sten, beton, lettere metalarbejde og andet arbejde med ru eller snavsede overflader der kan udtørre huden eller rive den op. Denne type er også den klart mest benyttede til havearbejde og andre tungere opgaver i private hjem.

Skærehandsker

På slagterier, i fiskeindustrien og tilsvarende steder bruges ofte en skærehandske der er lavet af eller forstærket med et finmasket metalnet. Dette sikrer at man ikke skærer sig i hånden under arbejdet, hvilket ellers er en dagligt set hændelse når man arbejder med kolde produkter og skarpe knive.

Svejsehandsker

Ved arbejde med svejsning, skærebrænding, smedning og andet med varme emner anvendes ofte varmebestandige handsker der kan holde varmen ude. Tidligere anvendtes ofte asbest til isolering, og i dag kaldes handskerne stadigvæk asbesthandsker mange steder selvom isoleringen er af et andet materiale.

Gummihandsker

Gummihandsker består af to kategorier. Den tynde type bruges til lettere rengøring hvor de skal forhindre at rengøringsmidlerne beskadiger huden, og de benyttes i sundhedssektoren, hvor de skal forhindre overførsel af smitte eller snavs mellem patienter og plejere.

De tykkere handsker er beregnet til hårdere arbejde med våde, sure eller basiske produkter. De skal være stort set lige så slidstærke som slidhandskerne og samtidigt kunne holde fugt og kemikalier ude. Disse bruges eksempelvis af oliechauffører, kloakarbejdere og ved kemikalietransport. Tætningsmaterialet er ikke altid gummi, men mange kalder dem gummihandsker selvom de har syntetisk membran.

Smudshandsker

De mest almindelige smudshandsker er hvide tynde bomuldshandsker med blå gummiknopper på indersiden. De beskytter hverken mod splinter eller skarpe kanter, og er som navnet siger primært beregnet til at holde snavs væk fra hænderne. Dog har handskerne med gummiknopper også en skridsikrende funktion, og naturligvis isolerer de lidt når det er koldt.

Brandhandsker

En brandmand anvender under sin indsats en særlig handske, der er særdeles varmebestandigt og slidstærk. Handsken er en del af standardindsatsuniformen og anvendes således både under røgdykning og ved andet arbejde i øvrigt. Det er normalt kun under enten indsatser, der ikke kræver handsker eller under større kemikalieuheld den ikke anvendes. Den anvendes således også under lette kemikalieindsatser, der ikke kræver særligt bestandige indsatsdragter.
