<title><![CDATA[Cinematic Commentary: Godard &amp; LaBruce]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Monday was movie night with some of my Radical Philosophy crew and we went to see Godard's <em>La Chinoise</em> (1967) at our local non-profit movie theater.  Sometimes, I feel inundated and overwhelmed by the sheer amount of important literature, film, and music that exists in the world, so I always appreciate it when some outside force helps me to make a decision about what to read, see, or listen to next.  This impetus came in the form of my <a href="http://theorymyculture.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">thesis advisor</a> giving an introduction and post-film discussion at this particular screening and his alerting the Radical Philosophy student group to this event.  Here's the trailer and my commentary for <em>La Chinoise </em>follows after the jump:</p>

<p>The film takes place pretty much entirely in the apartment of five young radical Maoists during (then) contemporary France.  An important thematic consideration throughout the film concerns the question of the place and purpose of revolutionary violence.  I don't really want to get into a deep synopsis of the film not only because I find that uninteresting but also because the film is much more about the day to day existence of these five students than any sort of story line or character development.  To me, Godard seems most concerned with the apparent fetishization of revolutionary action by a bunch of bourgeois students and this frustration comes through in what comes off as obvious parody.  In fact, during the film, I felt a distinct feeling of frustration.  Perhaps this was my own feeling but I suspect this was partially Godard's intention -- it <em>was</em> frustrating to listen to these disembodied bits and pieces of Marxist rhetoric, I had to cringe when I watched the home-made "skits" about human suffering, I grimaced at the critiques of ideology (a la Althusser) that came about in a home-made classroom...but, while I was frustrated, cringing, and grimacing, I was also <em>laughing</em>.  I was laughing because it was funny, eerily familiar, and also poignant. The ending of the film left me uncomfortable because its literal suggestion was that these bourgeois activities were just a "small step" in a "long march" towards revolution.  That was a pretty tough pill to swallow: I had a hard time taking that seriously given the intense level of parody at every corner and at every level of the film preceding that final moment (e.g., through visuals, through dialogue, through soundtrack -- I feel that the trailer is somewhat apt in offering a glimpse into this subtle but intense humor).</p>

<p>What I found more shocking than the pill of an ending was my advisor's ensuing commentary that many Godard scholars believe that this film was some sort of naive affirmation of Maoism.  My take on it (although, granted, I was a bit sleepy in the theater) is that the question of whether or not Godard is a Maoist is totally irrelevant to the critique that was presented in the film.  I really do feel as though the film was an open question and exploration about value and place of theory verus praxis and the nature of praxis.  Maoism could have been interchangeable with any other sort of radical revolutionary discourse.  I was really shocked that someone could sit down, watch this film, and not really "get" the parody involved.  I saw this piece with 3 other friends of mine, all of whom are at one place or another in their undergraduate careers (me at the end, another friend at the near end, one in the middle, and one just beginning).  All four of us thought it was borderline unimaginable that the element of parody could be glossed over in such a strong way by anyone, especially an academic.</p>
<p>But I wanted to cut these academics some slack so I wondered exactly what was it that made the message of parody so accessible to us.  How were we able to sort of "cut through" the question of whether or not Godard was a Maoist and hone in on the other thematic questions?  Our own political affiliations could be the culprit (3 of us were from the Hampshire College "Radical Philosophy" group and the other student was a student in a course on the political zeitgeist of 1968).  Whatever our beliefs between us, we might have an easier time being exposed to radical rhetoric than, say, a BYU student.  But that can't be the end of the story, right?</p>
<p>While we were getting post-movie caffeine, it suddenly hit me that I had already been cinematically exposed to these themes before...in pornography, of all places!  I don't mean to suggest that there is anything negative about pornography qua pornography, I am quite avidly and fervently pro-pornography (well, safe, sane, fairly compensated, legal, and consensual pornography, but that's a different post). But I think its location in my brain, and by large extension, the public's, is notable. The film I have in mind here is Bruce LaBruce's <em>The Raspberry Reich</em>.  No one else in my group had seen the film, but I wondered less about my specific association to the movie than the way <em>La Chinoise </em>"clicked" to me on such a gut level.  I do wonder about what sort of story of repression could be told here.  The idea that my frustrated, repressed, bourgeois revolutionary sits alongside all those other repressed sexual desires is really something else.  But more about <em>The Raspberry Reich...</em></p>

<p>The film was part of my introduction to sexual politics at Hampshire College.  I remember the first time I saw a clip of it as a young and doe-eyed first year from Southern California. It felt awkward, but it made a kind of sense to me.  And, when I saw it in its entirety as a second year student, it "clicked" to me on whatever level an urban terrorist porno can "click" to someone who came of age during the 9/11 era.  Like those who had introduced me to the film, I, too, grew to love it.<em>  The Raspberry Reich </em>takes place in (now) contemporary Germany (I believe, it's been a while since I've seen the film) and the focus of the film is an underground radical terrorist group led by their fearless female leader, Gundrun.  The style is largely pornographic, but the pornographic moments often fall flat as these moments are strictly for "revolutionary" purposes.  The viewer can't help but laugh as slogans flash across the screen during these sexually awkward moments: "PUT YOUR MARXISM WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS," "THE REVOLUTION IS MY BOYFRIEND," "JOIN THE HOMOSEXUAL INTIFADA."  We smile as the urban guerillas swear allegiance to vegetarianism and end up stopping at a Burger King after a kidnapping.  For what it is (pornography, essentially),<em> Raspberry Reich</em> got some (albeit limited) critical acclaim because, beneath all the homoeroticism, there was some thinly veiled statement about the politics of underground radical revolutionary groups. And that statement is this: being revolutionary is pretty much the most counterrevolutionary thing you can do.  Eventually, the fetishization of revolution will co-opt revolution itself. (And, FYI: in <em>Raspberry Reich</em>-land, just about everything is counterrevolutionary: Madonna, heterosexuality, meat, corporate hip-hop, etc.)</p>
<p>After seeing <em>La Ch<span style="font-style:normal;"><em>inoise</em> though, it's hard for me to really understand why LaBruce got so much street cred for this film. Apparently, he didn't invent the genre of Marxist Revolutionary Satire.  How is <em>Raspberry Reich</em> not a clumsy rip-off of Godard?  Yes, LaBruce hits the nail of "terrorist chic" on the head as it might resonate with us today but it doesn't make us go any further than a simple affirmation of his critique.</span></em></p>
<p>I think it's hard to glean anything explicitly political from either film (again, how anyone can deduce that Godard is a fervent Maoist is beyond my wildest imagination), but there is something more far successful in Godard's ambiguity and thus, the power of his critique (if he has any). This is probably also the difference between cinema qua cinema and pornography that is trying to be cinema.  But now, I really just can't get a handle on the critical acclaim for LaBruces's work -- a work that, now, seems to me to fail in both ways it tries to satisfy.  Maybe LaBruce was <em>always</em> counterrevolutionary and I'm just now growing into adulthood.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Es curioso que mi afición al cine sea inversamente proporcional al número de películas que tengo vistas. Pero para equilibrar la balanza tengo buenos amigos cinéfilos que me invitan a sus hogares para ver películas buenas, malas, nuevas, viejas, épicas, sosas, y, cómo no, bizarras. </p>
<p>De la que os hablo hoy es de <strong>The Rocky Horror Picture Show </strong> (con <a href="http://www.rhps.es/" target="_blank">club de fans no oficial</a> y todo) película de los 70, basada en un musical que estoy interesada en ver también.</p>

<p>No tengo problema en ver cualquier tipo de cine, pero por causas X nunca había llegado a ver una como ésta. Y no pude empezar con una mejor.</p>
<p>          Una Susan Sarandon en tiempos mozos encarnando a la dulce Janet (que me recordó a la Sandy mojigata de GREASE, todo sea dicho) decide contraer matrimonio con su pareja Brad; éstos se pierden con su coche en medio de la nada, con la lluvia como telón de fondo, y un castillo misterioso que no debía estar ahí.</p>
<p>Entran con la esperanza de encontrar cobijo, un teléfono y ayuda.. pero se encuentran con algo parecido a una secta con <em>tintes psiquiátricos </em>cuyo líder es <strong>Tim Curry</strong>, o lo que es lo mismo, el <strong>Dr. Frank N. Furter</strong>, un dulce travesti transexual de Transilvania. Ahí es nada.</p>
<p>Es entonces cuando entonan una de las mejores canciones del film:</p>

<title><![CDATA[Put your money where your mouth is]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>LA is full of starving artists.  Especially actors, although I think they count reasonably less than everyone else depending on their talent and goals.  However, there are tons of visual artists, dancers, writers, playwrights, directors who are producing work even when it actually costs them money.</p>
<p>Most of my friends are artists in some way.  I am an artist sometimes.  I studied art, I used to produce "art", I dance and I contribute to set design.  I find it very important to patronize the arts.</p>
<p>Last weekend, Maritza and I both came to support Jesus, who loves dance more than life itself.  He had a 2 minute solo in Sarah's Zodiac piece (he was Libra).  2 minutes is a very long time to be on stage by yourself. He was brilliant!  A very thoughtful and spiritual dancer.  I am so lucky to be invited to watch him grow and perform.</p>
<p>At the same performance were 2 very young dance companies, in addition to Sarah's.  All 3 companies perform modern pieces based in culture and society.  They extract their inspiration from literature, politics and social constructs.</p>
<p>A week or so ago, I bought 3 photographs.  The interesting thing about me purchasing photography is that I always said I had no respect for it.  The other interesting thing is that it is all over my apartment.  A 5 x 4 picture of New York, a 11 x14 photograph of Hugh Hamilton's dancer/butterfly given to me by Lisa and Hugh, and now 3 collage photographs of LA icons, the Capital Records building, the Arclight movie theater, and Hollywood Forever cemetery.</p>
<p>Not only are these photographs beautiful in the way they are designed, but they are beautiful in what they represent.  A Hollywood era nearly coming to end.  In addition, these 3 unique places are each a block from my office in different directions.  I can see 2 of them from the window I sit at everyday.</p>
<p>It is vital to support independent artists.  Particularly when you are an artist yourself.  Often, I find people talking about how the arts are unfunded and how programs are being taken out of schools.  But are these same people putting their money (and time) where their mouth is?</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="http://images.rottentomatoes.com/images/movie/gallery/1185688/photo_03_hires.jpg"><img class="  " src="http://images.rottentomatoes.com/images/movie/gallery/1185688/photo_03_hires.jpg" alt="" width="324" height="216" /></a>Paranoid Park, 片如其名, 沒有華麗的場景或緊湊的劇情, 只有青春危險而美好的氣息, 與觀眾隨著滑板的光影, 近距離看著Alex面對家庭、同儕、女友、以及命案的當下, 是如何心不在焉地掛著清秀的面具, 在自己的回憶中打轉。導演Gus Van Sant(常譯葛斯范桑)以大量的音樂取代對白, Elliot Smith的簡單旋律是Alex決定開始提筆時的背景音樂、hio-hop、貝多芬也在電影中靈巧地溜進故事, 聽覺完整了攝影的敘事--就像高中所聽的音樂, 承載了那時的煩惱、陪伴我們晚自習, 那些背景音樂補足了當時總是用不完的美好時光。至今每次重新放送Coldplay的Parachutes, 心中浮現的畫面依然是那時候掛著耳機, 無所謂地翻著書準備聯考的晚上; 從台大誠品音樂買的CD和包裝紙, 也在它關門大吉後成為證明它曾經存在過的信物。</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">記憶是一種多重時間能夠同時共存的領域...由時間層面觀之, 記憶是斷裂而不連續的(另一種影像敘事, John Berger and Jean Mohr, 2007)。迷幻公園亦是如此, 在Alex的書寫、橡皮擦拭去、重新書寫、全數燒掉的過程中, 他的迷幻公園抽象地承受了我們每個人年少時的不可承受之輕。在時間之流中, 我們被推入一個接一個的人生階段, 約定俗成地擔任小孩, 青少年, 直到成年。然而, 在踏進每一個階段之際, 從沒有人被過問過是否準備好了, 也從沒有人曾經準備好了; 但在這過程之中, 有著人生中最為奇幻美好的階段, 就在踏入自己的迷幻公園時展開。至少, 從記憶裡的長鏡頭遙望, 它依然是令人窒息般地美好, my Paranoid Park。</p>

Napanood na siguro ng lahat ang My Bestfriend's Wedding kaya naman hindi na natin maappreciate ang palabas. Sabi nga nila, Patrick Dempsey is no Julia Roberts.</p>

<p>Fear creates fear. People whom you befriend may suddenly become enemies because of the group you've chosen. For the Mist, the monsters lurk quietly in the mist, barely visible until few anticipated moments. In the movie, it is the fear rooted in the human nature divides themselves. What you believe (God or antitheism) , where you came from (New York City or local), and your gender altogether become the factors make you differ yourself from others, or, the excuses for you to kill others. Sometimes, human nature is more fearful than monsters. Or, perhaps, the monsters have already lived within us, in the deepest corner of our hearts.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I forgot to mention that after slitting our wrists over the closing of Nova Cafe, we went over to M Cafe on Melrose and saw Mr. Michael Cera being the George Michaeliest George Michael you ever did see.  Hanging out at the counter all awkward and alone.  Plus he was wearing royal blue skinny jeans.  What a sweetheart.  It almost made Arturo forget about dear old CBGB, I mean...Nova.</p>
<p>Tonight, Meagen and I went to a screening of Son of Rambow, courtesy of my friend Elizabeth who works for Paramount Vantage.  We pull onto the Paramount lot and are greeted by 4 Paramount Vantage pals who check our names off their list.  We park and go over to the theater.  About 5 minutes after we sat down (about 7:10), the guy at the projector yells out something like "play movie" or "here we go" even though the screening was not supposed to start until 7:30.  No one else was in the theater.</p>
<p>We kept thinking they were testing it, but no.  For some reason, a film that has been hyped for months, that doesn't even open until Friday, was screened for just me and Min at Paramount's Theater.</p>

<p>This is by far one of the best movies ever.  It is eminently quotable and many of its lines have worked their way into my regular speech.  Winona Ryder can use a crappy accent in as many period films as she wants; she will forever get a pass for this (and <i>Beetlejuice, </i>and "Strangers With Candy") in my book.  <i>Jawbreaker</i> tried to be this movie and sucked royally.  <i>Mean Girls</i> always gets compared to this one, and while I think they're equally enjoyable and well-made, I don't think <i>Heathers</i> could ever be anything Oprah could get into, if you know what I mean.</p>
