I was watching the news or Toronto’s CityTV last night when this story appeared. In a nutshell

I was watching the news or Toronto's CityTV last night when this story appeared. In a nutshell, laptops when placed on your lap can cause fertility issues due to the heat they generate. The story then suggests some ways to avoid this including using devices that cool the laptop. This story was important enough to CityTV that they ran commercials for it all day, supplanting coverage of David Beckham mania that has gripped Toronto for the last two days.

Now this isn't new at all. A simple Google search comes up with all sorts of articles (some of which go back to 2003 or earlier) that suggest this might be the case. But most of these articles that I read also suggest that more research is needed before a definitive link can be established. So if your fertility matters to you, and you don't want to wait for a definitive answer, consider putting your laptop on a stand like these ones, or use a cooler like the ones referenced in the article.

DHS needs to plan creatively and carefully in order to position the school effectively to reap the benefits of the Federal Governments funding of the ‘digital revolution’ for 2009 and beyond. The challenges are many but the opportunities afforded our school community are great.

The following outlines a course of action designed to:

introduce laptops in a structured and sustainable manner

develop support materials and more importantly structures that allow faculties to access and create resources that can be shared

professionally develop staff in the use of technology in their classroom

establish systems for managing laptops and learning at DHS

facilitate the development of published positions and policies

The detail of the proposal is as follows. DHS should plan to:

introduce laptops into Year 9 in 2009 or as soon as possible

develop the online content management system Moodle to support T&L in Year 9 classes

purchase a subscription to Clickview

create a timeline for TPL that extends from semester 2 2008 into 2010

establish a team of ‘Pioneer’ teachers to facilitate professional learning

publish policies in the diary for laptop and internet use for 2009; especially for Year 9 students

A Brief Overview and Rationale

1. introduce laptops into Year 9 in 2009

Years 10, 11 and 12 are cohorts that have the pressure of external exams. Year 9 has NAPLAN but there is more flexibility in the delivery of courses. Year 9 is more likely to be disengaged from school and learning than 10-12; this would reinvigorate T&L for this cohort. It is suggested that Year 9 are not required to purchase exercise books but use their laptops.

2. develop the online content management system Moodle to support T&L in Year 9 classes

Reading about Moodle will make it obvious why this system would be a sound base from which to develop resources:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moodle

http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/internet/page4814.cfm

http://moodle.org/

Training is available in Sydney in mid-August.

3. purchase a subscription to Clickview

Teachers have responded positively to the recent presentation and this resource can integrate into the Moodle management system: http://www.clickview.com.au/home.php

DHS needs to invest in supporting staff with quality resources.

4. create a timeline for TPL that extends from semester 2 2008 into 2010

Systematic planning for TPL can take place as whole school systems are developed strategically eg focus on Year 9, using laptops, Moodle and the philosophy of constructivist pedagogy using ICT (see http://docs.moodle.org/en/Philosophy)

It is an ambitious yet achievable plan. It is about TPL, pedagogy and school planning not infrastructure. The plan is flexible and can be started now but full implementation delayed ie. If we do not have the laptops as soon as expected.

*My official response*. (Hit refresh on it once or twice to jog it into working.)

Please?

If you really must, get one of *these*.

$30?!

Aluminum + good air circulation = your laptop won't melt itself (or your lap). You do know that excess heat from "laptops" sitting on your lap is linked with sperm-count reduction, right? There was a *study*.

Eek!

Play your games. Don't cook your soldiers.

thanks.

Happy to help. =) I bought mine (that very one) at Staples, for that very price.

Leia hates thunderstorms. It is the one time she comes downstairs and actually gets close to people. She takes up residence in the lower "house" section of the cat tree in the hallway, or she runs up to Malkin and rubs against him, sometimes crying. Tonight I happened to be petting Malkin when she ran up to him, and so I almost got rubbed against, too. She backed away from my at the last moment, but the fact that she wants to be near other mammals during times of stress is better than cowering under the bed in my office.

But I went upstairs to close windows, and she's decided to be on the bottom step. So I'm in the crook of the staircase, typing on my laptop, humming old Beatles' tunes.....

Well it might not come as a shock to you but I’m currently looking at getting a new laptop.

Well it might not come as a shock to you but I'm currently looking at getting a new laptop. Now I should explain I can be pretty fickle when it comes to laptops. I think the record shortest time to last was a Toshiba L30 laptop which I bought mid 2007. Overall it lasted just shy of two weeks before it made it onto eBay. The longest surviving laptop was a Dell Inspiron 8200 which I bought several years ago, and it left me after two years of sterling service.

My main quandry at the moment is whether to buy a new laptop or just "revamp" one of my current models, by adding more Ram and rebuilding the OS. Currently the laptop I've been using the most is my Dell Vostro 1700. Now this is a beast of a laptop, which spec wise is excellent, 3GB Ram, 220GB hard drive, 256MB 8600 dedicated graphics, running Vista Home Premium. The problem is the build quality isn't in my opinion very good, the battery rattles, and it has done since day 1, it is what I term as plastic fantastic.

Now what I do want to do is use VMWare for lots of development work which I have coming up, as well as for some training, as I'm going to need a server and a couple of clients, I figure why not go virtual with them?

I've been reading a lot on Keith Comb's blog (http://blogs.technet.com/keithcombs/archive/2008/06/04/my-lenovo-thinkpad-t61p-now-has-8gb-of-ram.aspx) about him fitting his Lenovo T61p with 8GB Ram, now of course I know for the OS to see more than 4GB it has to be x64 and not x86 as I'm currently using, but I figure for a small cost I could increase the Ram in my Vostro 1700 go x64 on the OS, which would be Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit edition. Maybe the Vostro might see more than 4GB Ram, who knows, reading Keiths Blog it does seem possible as he tried this on a T61p and a HP 6910p.

The main candidates for my affection are a T61p or a Macbook Pro.

The T61p at the moment in the UK seems to be rarer than rocking horse poo at this present time. Build quality of Lenovo's seem to be second to none. I've had one as my main laptop well a T61 provided to me by my last client and my current client, one running Windows Vista Enterprise Edition 32 bit, and the latest running Windows XP Professional SP2. Personally I think this would be a good fit with VMWare, especially if I managed to bumpf it to 8GB Ram.

Macbook Pro, I love Macs, now don't get me wrong, I'm a Mac fan, my problem is that sometimes when I try to do something with a Mac it takes me slightly longer to do it than it would on a Windows machine. For example running some Windows Virtual Machines in Parallels.

Now one of my problems is that I tend to use these machines quiet a lot on clients sites, and sometimes it can cause an issue for example in the past I have had comments passed to me by collaboration partners, MS for one, about the fact I used a Macbook during a kickoff meeting for large Vista rollout project, even thought the machine was using bootcamp and had Vista Ultimate installed on it. :-) So for this a T61p would fit into the corporate environment a lot easier than a Macbook Pro.

Now I should add that one of the other reasons that I'm thinking of getting rid of my Vostro is that I simple don't believe that it can cope with being lugged about every day, and go through the amount of travel which I do, mainly due to the poor build quality. One thing is for sure I use Dell kit for some of my clients and I would never, ever recommend Vostro laptops to them, although I have used Vostro desktops in some good combinations with PowerEdge servers. So why I bought one I don't know...well I do know I saw T9300 processor, 3GB Ram and a £619 price tag inc vat :-)

On Keith's blog he mentions that at the moment he hasn't been able to get his Macbook Pro to function with 8GB Ram, so this could be a none starter from the beginning...I'll keep you posted. Any comments from people who've used T61p's or Macbook Pro's greatfully received.

A lot of people know, or if they’re young enough, have vaguely heard people reminisce, about the d

A lot of people know, or if they’re young enough, have vaguely heard people reminisce, about the days when computers took up entire rooms in universities and took minutes (or hours) to process simple calculations. But laptops are quickly becoming the next generation of shrunken technology, and if you own or are thinking of purchasing one, it would be good to understand how notebook computers got from the lab to your lap.

Laptops are similar to desktop computers in what they do, but it is the size, weight, battery power and portability that set them apart. The first computer to move from sitting on top of a desk to someone’s lap is in debate. There was, however a clear transition period in the 1970s, when “luggables” became popular – easily transported, but heavy and non-battery powered computers. These could be packed up and moved from location to location, but they were not that convenient.

The main factor getting in the way of the birth of laptops, was the lack of technology to answer demand. People wanted notebook computers, but due to the use of cathode ray tubes in the back of a computer monitor, they just weren’t possible. CRTs are big and clunky, and prior to the invention of LCD in DATE, they were the main impediment to the laptop’s creation. Luggables were the closest thing to a portable computer for many years, until LCD and plasma screens became affordable.

In the early days of laptops, the Osborne 1, release in 1981 was a favorite – it cost a little over half of a regular computer offering the same price, and because the screen was small (only five inches), the CRTs were not that bulky. It took up the space of a medium-sized suitcase, and weighed close to 25 pounds. Although this is massive compared to laptops today, it was a consumer favorite, and really helped businesses move at a quicker pace.

By 1984 things were moving for laptops, and Microsoft (with Kyocera doing the hardware) released the Tandy 100 through Radioshack. This looked like a large-display scientific calculator, but we’re on our way. Laptops are using LCD technology by this time, and this particular one was the first to use battery power. They’re slimmer, they weigh between 4 and 10 pounds, and their designs are starting to look fashionable.

The next step comes from Apple. They released the Macintosh Portable, which evolved into the Powerbook, in 1989. This looks like a dated, but recognizable, notebook computer. The screen is flat and folds over the keyboards, it uses a battery, a trackball for the mouse, and it’s lightweight.

From there the laptop took the regular steps of any burgeoning technology. It became slimmer and increased its processing power. The designs became more stylish, once the functionality was mastered. And, thankfully for those of you looking to purchase a laptop in the future, the prices came down.

Now that you know a bit about how laptops came to be, thank your lucky stars that you don’t have to lug around a 25 pound briefcase every time you want to hook on to WiFi at the nearest coffee shop!

Today I want to deviate from my series on what is a used laptop and talk a little about the Panasoni

Today I want to deviate from my series on what is a used laptop and talk a little about the Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 and the parts to fix this model laptop. We sell this model laptop on our website. Here is the link to the model we have in stock right now. But that is not necessarily the reason that I want to talk about this model. I want to talk about the entire line of Panasonic Toughbook CF-25, CF-27 and the CF-28 models.

The CF-25 model is the older Pentium 133 mhz and 166 mhz model. I havent seen this model is several years for sale. However I do have some of these on my scrap pile that actually work and have all the parts. They typically had a touch screen and were made from the same material as the current CF-27 and CF-28 is made from. However the CDROM drives and Floppy drives are not transferrable to the CF-27 series. In fact even the batteries are different. So I wont go into this model too much based on its age.

However the CF-27 typically started with the Pentium 266mhz processor and went to the Pentium III 500 mhz model. This unit cured some problems that you had with the CF-25. Like the fact that the keyboard was hard to replace on the CF-25. I will say that the problems with the CF-27 were the power switch could be pushed in and broken which means a system board replacement. Also the Power connector would break away from the board as well if there was daily stress on the connection.

The CF-28 model Panasonic toughbook solved the power switch problem and tried to solve the power connection by beefing up the connection point. It still could break just not as easily. The CDROM from the CF-27 goes to the CF-28 as well as the AC adapter. This makes an easier upgrade path. The CF-28 has a different look with the silver top and black base. The CF-27 was all black.

With the upgrade to the CF-29 Panasonic toughbook can a new power AC adapter which used the IBM thinkpad yellow tip barrel. This solved the power connection issue. The CDROM from the CF-27 and CF-28 works in the CF-29. With the Centrino processor you have a nice unit. In addition something that I didnt mention before is that the touch screen could get marked up on all these models.

In order to change the touch cover on the CF-27 and CF-28 you had to remove the entire front cover plate of the screen. There is a flat cable that is very hard to connect to the screen when replacing the cover with a new one. With the cF-29 they have a tacky plastic cover that is easily removed from the screen and replaced just like the tint stuff for windows.

All in all for the money and if you do not need the horse power the CF-27 and CF-28 units are great for DOS and older type software apps. I have seen Truck repair shops buy them for some of the older software diagnostics and simply being able to withstand the shop environment.

But if you can afford it get the CF-29 it is a nice quick fast machine.

I really want to get a netbook (think very, very, very small laptop). And for various reasons, it's important to me that it run Linux. Right now, I'm looking at the Asus Eee PC 900 as it costs under $450, has 1GB of RAM, runs Linux (Xandros, though I'm curious how easy it is to run other distros on it), and uses a 20GB solid-state disk. This makes the IO really fast, though speed will never be a major consideration for this sort of device.

But any other suggestions are welcome. I don't expect to actually buy anything for a couple of weeks, unless I just see something that I can't miss.

Why is it these things never work?? My laptop is back in to get fixed AGAIN!! It's been in--no exaggeration--about every other week, maybe every two weeks, throughout the entire summer.

My computer man is as frustrated and tired to see it as I am to bring it. lol

So, I'm now working on my parent's desktop until who-knows-when. So that may help explain if posts start becoming more sporadic and replies to comments short or nonexistant.

I'm not trying to ignore you, it's just difficult going back to a big, clunky computer and I can't carry this one around with me wherever I go!

Can anyone empathize with me???

We all hear stories of how someone saved 50 percent- or more on purchasing things from amazon.com, b

We all hear stories of how someone saved 50 percent- or more on purchasing things from amazon.com, bestbuy.com or even circuitcity.com. How is it you always seem to miss the best deals? If you find yourself wondering, how you can find these deals? How can you get the latest gadgets and not pay full price?

I am going to let you in on my secret. I have not paid full price on ANYTHING- from electronics to furniture or even groceries in years. And its not because I don’t shop- quite the contrary- I love shopping, and spend a great deal of time indulging myself! But I hate spending money. The compromise? Coupon codes, promo codes, discounts and coupons!

Online coupons can come in the form of Promotional codes, coupon codes, or online discounts. These discounts entitle you for special offers and sales. The codes can be all numbers, all letters, or a combination of the two. These are promotional codes online stores- such as Amazon, circuit city and Best Buy use to get you to buy their merchandise.

You save money while shopping online by using these promo codes offered by online merchants to improve repeat business and obtain new customers. Benefits can include free shipping, gifts, discounts, or a percentage off your purchase price.

By making use of coupon codes, shoppers save on a range of products and services from electronics, clothing, toys, and kitchen appliances…almost anything you buy online has a coupon code you can use with it! The best part of these offers is that often you can use more than one on a purchase- that makes your discount even bigger!

Let’s take Amazon.com for example. One of their best-kept secrets (straight from their website!) is that if a price for an already-released item decreases within 30 days after we (Amazon.com) ship the item to you, we'll (they’ll) be glad to refund the difference in price if you contact us (them). That’s all. All you have to do is let them know, and they will refund you the difference!

There are restrictions to this- it applies only to products that have already been released (meaning no pre-sale items), it only applies to items sold by Amazon.com, and not to items (or prices) offered by other sellers on our (amazon.com) site, Promotions such as buy one, get one free are not eligible, and if the item you purchased had a rebate with it, the price of the item after the rebate is not considered to be the Amazon.com price.

If you use a coupon code when you check out and later find they have lowered the price- you will still receive a refund based on the item price BEFORE the coupon code was applied! In addition, utilizing amazon.com’s supersaver shipping, which is free shipping when your order totals $25 or more (on select items) you further increase your savings!

Before making a purchase make sure you look online at sites such as the www.dailynewdeals.com to find the best coupon codes and discounts!
