I finally did it, I finished spinning 4 ounces!! I am pretty proud of my self. I did not think I would ever manage to get the bobbin full, it took forever. Though I have to admit, it went much faster when I started spinning regularly because of the tour de fleece. Here is my results:
I know if anyone else looks like it they will probably think: Is that all? It has little curlycues coming out of it, and it really does not look that even! But it is the first thing I have ever spun! I am going to be working on the other 4, so I can ply them. I am now a bit anxious to see what the end result will look like. But I guess I have to be patient.

I have also been working on A'tuin and Casablanca, though Casablanca went backwards since the last post. I decided I wanted beads in the Moorish lattice. Every time I picked it up I said to my self: Next time I want to put beads in this part. Then I decided that it was a nice to knit, and it was only 20 rows back to where I wanted to put the first beads in, so I just ripped it. I tried dropping individual stitches, but that did not work so well. You keep running into other stitches that you then also have to drop. I decided rather then litterally having to drop all the stitches one by one, I would just frog and redo it. It is a bit of a gamble, since I don't know what the complete stole will look like, but I think it will be okay. A'tuin is almost finished till the end of the 2nd chart. I promise, pictures will come when that happens. Back to knitting!

I've had a skein of two ply handspun sitting on the bobbin for a while. I was originally planning to use it to make a cabled sock yarn - it was a technique I hadn't tried yet (and still haven't, for that matter!).

However....

Now I've found the perfect pattern for it! It's the Winter Twilight Mitts pattern by Laura Rintala, available as a free download on the Knitting Daily website.

I wish you could see the shine...the yarn has a really nice sheen to it and it's so soft!

The yarn is superwash merino spun from mill ends bought at my favorite shop, The Black Lamb in Port Hope, Ontario. I spun the skein in my 'fake hand paint' way using various colours. There are 520 metres (yay me) on the skein, so more than enough.

I'm planning to spin some black superwash - maybe mix in some dark gray - for the main colour.

I'm excited :) It'll be good to get back to the wheel too! I polished her up this morning in anticipation of our upcoming time together...she's so much prettier when she's not all dusty.

That is a rubber runner! I was going through my RSS reader yesterday, and found this post from Elle Decor. Turns out Present Time is selling these faux lace runners made of a synthetic rubber in several different colors (black is my favorite) on Design My World. They have place mats available too. Click here for a closer look.

Hope everybody has a great weekend! Sorry about the no new posts this morning. My wordpress was doing something funky and pushed back the times on all my scheduled posts. But now everything is back to normal.

I finished my "TO DO LIST" today!

Nice, actually, I like to do things with plans, it's more organized, and I like to retrieve goals!

I started the Seascape stole this afternoon, it's not a hard pattern, but the yarn that I am using is the Japanese yarn (RichMore Silky wheel Printed). This yarn is very fine , 2 ply , a mix of wool and silk.

It's very gorgeous, I hope I can keep this up and finish it in 2 months.
(may be I can finish it in a month if I just knit this in August)

I love lace, and kind of addicted to it, because I love to look at shadow of the lace under the light, it's like a spider web! (but not a scary one! I don't like spider!)

Pattern: Seascape Stole (from knitty.com)

needle size: 3.5 mm

yarn: RichMore Silky wheel printed (Japanese fine yarn) (Content of the yarn: wool and silk) 2ply (almost like thread weight!)

July 24/08 - already finished the 16 repeats of row 1 & 2.

It sounds like there's espionage or James Bond involved or something. Actually, it worked like this.

I read Susan's blog

I loved her Garden Variety patterns

She asked for test knitters.

I volunteered.

She sent me the pattern for Hydrangea the middle of June. After a few false starts, mostly on my part, I was off. I'm using Great Adirondack Soxie yarn in the Hydrangea colorway. I didn't even realize that was the name of the yarn when I ordered it.

I knit happily along. Most mistakes are very tiny and I could keep going, but a couple of times I emailed Susan for the best way to make a change. The biggest mistake I found was mine. I didn't look at the pattern closely enough to realize that there were triple decreases. Once I figured that out, it was smooth sailing.

There are a ton of beads in this project, but I personally think it's well worth the effort. This week, I've been going outside in the early evenings to knit. Here's my setup.

I make a copy of the pattern and just cross the row off with a pen when I finish it. For me, that's the easiest way to keep track of where I am, especially when I'm working off of multiple charts. I have my crochet hook and this cute little dish for beads. The one thing that's missing from the photo is the Diet Coke that's never far away. And here's the view.

Don't hate me! I live in Minnesota and it's covered with snow for the majority of the year! I could also show you the thistle that I pulled out of one of the flower beds. It was larger than my smallest kid. Or I could play you an audio of Kid 4 and Kid 5 fighting in the pool. Or I could show you the landscaping in the back that desperately needs weeding right now. Or I could show you more photos of Hydrangea!

This is probably my favorite shot.

I'm well into the second half right now. I'm going away with Honey for a few days in August, and I'd like to wear it, so I need to keep at it.

I didn't get a photo of the completed half that I love, so this will have to do.

The release date for Hydrangea is on Monday, July 28. For more info, go to Susan's post. You're going to want to keep an eye on her because she's got some gorgeous designs in the works.

Oh, and I have to give credit to my assistant. What would I do without my staff?

Finally! Some knitting!

I know I haven't posted any knitting on my blog yet. I've only had it 4 days...

Look I finished something! Or one something, at least. This is my Spirogyra. I'm knitting it for the Fingerless Glove Fanatics July KAL on Ravelry.

The group is called Fingerless Glove Fanatics right?

This pattern is so easy to follow! It's fun to knit. The yarn is my own handspun Hot Chocolate spun with white merino, brown alpaca, white soysilk, and firestar sparkle fiber. This is actually only my second time knitting lace! I'll have to knit more, I love the lace. It's already July 24 ,so I probably won't finish the gloves for this month, but I'll finish them sometime! Here's a close-up of the stitch detail.

The firestar makes it sparkle so much!

For anyone new to knitting fingerless gloves, I recommend this pattern. There's no thumb gusset or fancy shaping. The shaping is achieved by simply changing needle sizes, and the thumb is made the same way. After changing to a larger needle size, you just slip some stitches onto scrap yarn for the thumb. The lace in this pattern is so easy too! The repeat is only 6 stitches and 10 rows, so keeping track where I was in the pattern was super easy.

Yes, this is my 5th pair of fingerless gloves, and no, I don't want to stop knitting them. Small projects like gloves and hats are easy to carry around and are lightweight. No big and heavy sweaters hanging off of the needles. :)

I've been spinning too! Right now I have this yarn on my bobbin.

Ooh, the pretty colors!

It's 4 oz. BFL from Spunky Eclectic in the grand opening color. I love spinning BFL. The fiber is shiny when it's spun, and it's so easy to draft! I'm trying to spin a fingering weight 2-ply yarn to knit a Tempest with. If I can spin enough of this yarn for the main color, I'll spin 4 oz. of white BFL for the contrasting color. This is my first time spinning for a sweater, so I hope it comes out right!

If you look closely at the tips of the wing you can see the beads which add a very nice shimmer to the stole.

The stole being blocked with wires and pins.

It helped that a daughter's room just got new carpeting.

I wanted to get a pic of stole being modeled, but the weather has been very dark and gray for me to get a decent shot.

To recap...

Pattern: Swan Lake by Melanie Gibbons
Yarn: Jagger Spun Zephyr Wool Silk, Colour Ebony
Needles: US#4, Addi Lace

I made it longer and used Beading Banshee's variation (a border for the transition to the wing). I started last July and stopped because of indecision on how to finish. I revisited the project last month and decided to try the wing. I am very happy with the finished stole.

It's been a cold and cloudy summer.

It poured down rain at my son's last soccer game, he was half frozen even thought he played the whole game. I had to get him some long sleeved Under Armor and gloves for tonight's game since it's colder (48F) and still raining. None of my kids for the past 9 summers have had to wear extra gear to keep them warm during a soccer game.

Oh summer, where for art thou summer?

I'm having it made.

I want to give you so many more details because I am so so so so so so excited to be having my gown custom made, but alas, Husband-in-Training would come across it and know all too much.

So what helped me make this decision? During all my tryings-on of bridal gown after bridal gown, I found myself thinking "this is not ME. This gown was made for 'a bride', but not for ME." and there were things I would want changed with each gown. This includes the amazing Pronovias gown I almost went with from Bridal & Formal.

Upon coming across an amazingly talented dressmaker based in San Francisco, CA, I knew I found the young woman who would make MY gown. And it felt SO right, especially after exchanging a few e-mails, sending along a photo of what I was looking for and even more so after receiving the fabric in the mail. It was all coming together and it would be MINE!

This decision feels so RIGHT, so GOOD, and I am THRILLED! Anyone who is interested in seeing the photos of the design and fabrics, shoot me an e-mail (jlnowak [at] gmail [dot] com)!

Any other brides out there having their wedding gown custom-made? Please share!

Got boring sheets? Tired of plain old cotton sheets? Me too. But there is a solution to mundane nights. Ladies and gentlemen...lace never dies. Trimming your bed-sheets with lace does not have to mean transforming your sleeping quarters to grandma's doily collection. Lace comes in so many different patterns and designs that it's easy to select one that suits your style. *Machine sewing parts of this project are recommended for a more professional finish. *

Supplies:

Good old fashion elbow grease because you may be hand-sewing parts of this project.

Iron + Ironing board

Sheet set + 2 pillowcases

Four yards of lace for a full or queen sheet set and 2 pillowcases -OR- five yards of lace for a king sheet set + two pillow cases. I chose the 88mm Cotton Eyelet Lace. Style #38903 for my sheets. If you are looking for a something a little less soft than regular lace, you should try metallic lace for a more modern look.

Needle and thread to match the lace

Sewing Machine

Scissors

Directions:

Preshrink your sheets if they are new

Preshrink your lace if it is 100% cotton on the gentle cycle and I recommend putting it in a lingerie garment bag or tied pillow case to protect it. No need to preshrink if it is a cotton blend.

Iron sheets + pillowcases

Cut two 41" pieces of lace for the pillowcases. The rest will be for the top sheet.

Fold one piece of lace in half, right side in and hem the two ends together with a ½ inch seam allowance. Repeat with second pillow case piece. Press open seams with iron.

Pin lace loops right side out onto the pillowcases so the top lines up with the hem on the cases. Machine-sew the top edge of the lace to the pillowcase. Remember to backstitch! Hand sew all other parts of the lace down the pillow cases...the need for this step can be omitted if the lace you choose looks better free-flowing.

Lay the remaining piece of lace across the top hem of the flat sheet. Fold ½" at each end of the lace around the back of the sheet + press + hem.

Machine hem the top edge of the lace across the width of the sheet. Hand-sew the rest as needed.

Make your bed, turn on some tunes and take a nap. You deserve it.

I just can't quite get the color right, but I finally got the stitch right!!! This, of course, is the gull lace pattern on my February Lady Sweater! I'm really digging knitting this right now. It's flying by. Everyday I drive in I wish it was done and I could bring it with me to wear at work. Alas, I'll have to wait awhile longer. But isn't it lovely?

last night, at 11:00, i designed the lace square. i think it could pass as a knitter's equivilant to a granny square...

i used my US8 needles and what i think was either double knitting or worsted weight yarn... or are those the same thing? lol. idk what my gauge is, but im pretty sure it doesn't matter, you'd just get a bigger or smaller square depending on your needles and yarn weight, and then you just make more or less squares for whatever you need the squares for. by the way, i knitted this up in a multicolored yarn and it didn't look nearly as cool as it did with plain yarn. just so ya know. ;)
