Welcome back.

Got another theme-based Recommender for Number 6. I'm going to concentrate on the awesomely-brilliant Los Anegeles scene. It's breathtakingly huge and ram-jammed with DJ's, clubs, photgraphers and labels so fucking cool that its icy breeze stretches around the world. The city is known for its beach life, trend-setting scenesters and sunny dispositions, so it makes for a great proving ground for the city's young crowd to bathe in.

I should begin by stating that with all the DJ's I'm rolling on about in this post, all roads seem to lead back to a collection of hipsters, often found around CINESPACE, a cinema/lounge/club in Hollywood. To give you an idea of the type of people that crop up on it's radar here's a shortlist:

Steve Aoki (Dim Mak Records Boss and DJ)
Cobrasnake Crew (Hipster Profilers including; Rony Alwins & Mark Hunter -Photographers)
Sarah Morrison (Famous Youtube scenester)
Kid Paparazzi (Another photographer of beautiful people)
DJs, including: Busy P, Dan Oh, Gina Turner, La Castle Vania, Crookers amongst many others...

OK OK OK, back to THE RECOMMENDER - NUMBER 6.

First up this week, a DJ duo well known at Cinespace, LA RIOTS. They can rip up the dancefloor like a West coast earthquake! Signed up to Fools Gold records, they have been blasting out the finest electro remixes for the likes of Justice, Scanners and Hearts Revolution, and they're as good as anyone's. I list below their mix of 'Can't Believe A Single Word' for your listening stimulation...

Moving on, the next crew I wanna blow up are ROYAL RUMBLE, who are also firmly welded to the Cinespace scene regularly popping up around LA playing at their touring event night, Hush Hush, where they bill alongside the likes of Skeet Skeet, Modular records DJs and Classixx (see below...) amongst many others. They are a 3-piece consisting of; Dan, Kyle and Russ, spinning their bouncing electro favourites for all to shake to. I list their remix of the Soulwax tune, 'Miserable Girl', below because its so freaking ace! Enjoy.

Find them here: www.myspace.com/theroyalrumble

Finally, for this longer than normal post, I come to the last of the California-linked geniuses, a two-piece known as CLASSIXX. Formerly known as The Young Americans until a legal situation put an end to it, this pair are found on many of the Hush Hush parties thrown in the LA area. I cannot get enough of their brilliant mixes and bubbling electro sound. I list below their tune Dial One.

Find them here: http://www.myspace.com/classixxmusic

Hear them here: http://www.zshare.net/audio/1601408622258cac/

So you now have no excuses - book up your flight to LA now! What a scene, what a collection of brilliant DJ's and its all in the sunshine. Sounds like perfection. Hope you enjoyed this themed post. I'll be back with another one real soon, so keep coming back and I promise to love you forever...

I'm back. Camp Bisco VII in Mariaville, NY this past weekend was quite an adventure. Three days of music and mayhem in an upstate NY venue controlled by the Hell's Angels - it's a hard picture to paint for someone who's never been to one of these, so I'll focus on the music.

Thursday's highlight from its short lineup was easily Snoop Dogg, though I feel he's a bit over-hyped these days. Snoop came out strong with a huge entrance and dropped right into "Next Episode". He played a lot of his new stuff, but the crowd's energy didn't take off until he he started dropping tracks from his OG days. Overall, a very entertaining start to the weekend. The Disco Biscuits came on shortly afterwards to blast off. Something I learned rather quickly about my weekend: by the 2nd or 3rd Biscuits set of the day, I was exhausted and getting near drunk.

Friday morning and exhaustion reason #1: by 8:30 a.m., the sun is up and it's already 85 degrees. Any further sleep is impossible. Interestingly, everyone at camp is forced out of bed by this meteorological horror between 8-10 a.m. no matter how late they were up the night before. By noon, I was ready for some good music, and Ithaca native homeboys Jimkata brought it. These guys had the musical chops to make the bill, and they certainly got the energy level at the right place for the rest of the day.

The next impressive set I caught was one from Tea Leaf Green, a bunch of festival favorites it seems. These guys played a show at my house a few years ago, in a much more intimate and rowdy setting - it was nice to see them soaking up the sunshine and crowd's vibes. I can't speak to their recorded work, but if you ever have the chance to check out the talented Tea Leaf live, definitely do so.

After a brief rest with food and whiskey, I was ready to check out !!!.

Until now, it seemed as though the heat was forcing bands to slowly warm up to the crowd; but these guys came out full fucking force. Singers Nic and Shannon had the fire energy - bouncing and sweating from song 1. The band's musicality was fierce all over. Definitely another act you'd want to see live. See where they're playing nearest you.

Speaking of whiskey, it was time for the Crown Royal to start flowing. Popped on over to the dance tent, where Lazaro Casanova and Daniel of LA Riots were setting up their decks. Due to clerical errors on the part of the scheduling trolls, Laz was playing to an almost-empty crowd and Daniel's audience was maybe 40 strong. A slight bummer, as their sets were downright nasty and deserved a bigger audience. Lazaro dropped some dark & dirty tech house and Daniel spun the bass-heavy electro bangers. I recorded both of their sets, so hopefully I'll be able to get them up here soon.

Hijack a golf cart and zip over to a trailer backstage where this guy is chillin:

I got to interview JFK (of MSTRKRFT), so check back soon, as I will post that ungodly awesome shit. Let's just say it's Profound. Unfortunately, Al-P has pneumonia (get well!) and was absent.

He then proceeded to the main stage to play, in the words of the 'stage manager', "filler music" for the Biscuits's set break. Motherfucker destroyed it. Thousands of hippies rocked out to one of the best MSTRKRFT sets I've ever heard (granted, it was only JFK , but dude was on point). Everyone on stage was slamming Crown, chain smoking, and loving Jesse's set. If you want to imagine the set, think essential mix with more Crookers-esque shit. I need me one of those fancy new Pioneer mixers.

For more pics of the madness, check out teh flickr. I then got some blacking out going on, talking to some of the Biscuits (very nice guys), and just telling everyone in the Undocumented entourage how much I love them. After they left, the next thing I remember was eating artichoke hearts in JFK's trailer at 2am. Amazing night.

Stay tuned until tomorrow for an update on the Saturday (AmpLive, DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist, and more Disco Biscuits) and the JFK interview.

If you've been wondering why it's been a little quiet at The Ink Tanker as of late it's because we've been up to our eyeballs gearing up for this past Saturday's HARD Summer Music Festival. Now, that the all-night rager has come and gone, we can now catch our breath and revel in the memories of a truly epic night.

The first-ever event was held at the Shrine Expo Hall in downtown L.A. and headlined by scorching sets from N*E*R*D and MSTRKRFT. Over the course of 7 hours, Spank Rock, Steve Aoki, Jason Bentley, Mr. White, Destructo, Felli Fel, LA Riots, DJ Momjeans, Squeak E. Clean, Kill the Noise and Miles Dyson performed unbelievable sets to thousands of dancing die-hards. Italy's The Bloody Beetroots closed out the bonanza with a full-throttle set that never let up from the first amped-up BPM until the clock struck 4 a.m. Meanwhile, Terry Kennedy and crew tore it up on the skate park throughout the night. We were blinded by the amount of bling in TK's mouth and had to wear sunglasses just to watch him rail slide...

A special thanks to Eric, Meghan, Reba, Bill and all the others at Bill Silva productions, everyone at the Shrine and all those who helped in anyway to make this a huge success. We could not have done it without you.

Stay tuned for details about the HARD Haunted Mansion, coming Halloween night 2008.

According to the L.A. Times, Spike Lee and his "Inside Man" producer, Brian Grazer, are set to move forward with their long-gestating project, "L.A. Riots." Terry George, the creative force behind revolutionary-themed works like "In the Name of the Father" and "Hotel Rwanda" is on board to deliver a final script and pave the way for production to begin before 2008 expires.

Don't get us wrong, this movie sounds great and we're excited to see Lee get back to his gritty bread and butter, but dammit, we're probably more excited about those Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant documentaries he's got in the can. Glad to see that Spike is actually making movies we can get excited about again (although I have to say, "The 25th Hour," is waaaaaay underrated and it has the most NSFW monologue ever, definitely Netflix it if you haven't seen it yet).

Alright, well I hope you're ready for a couple of really big weeks here in Chicago. To start things off, we have LA Riots making a stop at Debonair tomorrow and at the same time Feist will be hitting up the Pavilion at Rivinia Festival Grounds. Again, thats tomorrow night and thats all I really know for this week.

On July 17th, Debonair's monthly event, Fly By Night, brings in DJ Benzi with the usuals: Willy Joy, Zebo and Kid Color. The day after that A-Trak is coming to destroy Sonotheque, which should be a much better, more intimate show than the one at the spacious Metro. The following night you should head over to Crobar and check out Sharam, I saw Dubfire (Deep Dish's other half) at Crobar last year and he brought the most insane crowd I've ever seen there. That should be enough to keep you on your couch the entire day of Sunday, so lets move on to the following weeked.

For the week of the 20th the shit gets started really early with Mixhell and Gilly Smith at Smartbar on Wednesday. Actually, go ahead and camp it out at Smartbar because night after Mixhell are The Black Ghosts, which are followed directly by Tittsworth the very next night. Oh, and the weekend after that is Lollapalooza, so... Good luck to you all, you have your nights cut out for you!

Oh Snap! LA Riots are going to destroy Debonair! Based on what I've seen in the past, its extremely difficult to get Chicago people to go to shit, but I'm hoping you all shape up for this one. To miss LA Riots this week would be a failure of epic proportions, and especially at Debonair. When big names take on a small house, it makes the performance much more intimate, so I'm thinking this Friday should be excellent.

Oh and Jenny, since you're probably reading this, I knew about this before you sent the invite out, so don't think you're cool or anything ;).

As well as a considerable amount of remixes by Justice. There's been a constant stream of remixes of Justice's huge 2007 album, as those in the electro genre try and grab some fame by reinterpreting some of the Parisian duo's bigger hits. For the most part, these remixes are immediately forgettable. But rarely the remixer manages to provide somthing genuinely good.

Here LA Riots manage to out-Justice, Justice. The Party was one of the weaker tracks off of The Cross, it was a little flat and Uffie's cringeworthy rap 'skills' made it one of the rare duds on the album. But LA Riot have made it a little more immediate and a little dirtier. Uffie's vocals are glitched up and played around to add to the songs rhythm, which also has the benefit of depriving us of having to hear her awful rhymes and makes it sound, along with the increased prominence on the bassline, more like Justice.

Also included is a remix of D.V.N.O which is less impressive in its improvements, but that is more down to the fact that the original is quite good, unlike The Party

So it dawned on me during my road trip from the east coast that in theory i kind of want McCain to win in 08. I know I know. This is pretty blasphemous for a staunch democrat from illinois who is black and majored in Af Am studies, but there are some pretty (ir)rational reasons.

1.) I don't want Obama to get shot.

2.) I have the suspicion that if Obama wins everybody in this country is going to forget that racism still exists. Everybody will be all like look at that black dude in office, "lets stop thinking that the machine and the institution is keeping black people down, and lets start getting to the real issue...the poor and unsuccessful blacks are just lazy. I mean Obama did it, why can't they?"

3.) While an Obama win would be great (think health care and a focus on diplomacy and not war), historic, and fun fun fun (fried chicken and watermelon for everyone)-I think that a McCain win would also be kinda great cause Black people (and some guilty leftist educated white people) would flip the fuck out...leading to a revolution. I am talking riot in the streets like LA in the 90s. Maybe NWA would get back together.

Okay, I am totally aware of the fact that this tape has been floating around since January of this year but I could never truly motivate myself to sit down and listen to anything touched by Steve Aoki. Just look at him:

Do you want to listen to music made by that? Its like you can smell his B.O. from the screen. His association with La Lohan probably didn't help either. But after all of the fliers about the Dim Mak/Fools Gold party tonight I couldn't help but to be intrigued. From the few tracks that I've heard on the tape, I have to admit its pretty amazing. Download below.

I recently went to Los Angeles and had a really good time but I was hoping it would've been more like the LA Riots in 1992, and less like being stuck in traffic and lost in a maze of freeway systems. I remember watching the riots on television when I was 9 years old and wanting to be there. They seemed very cool at the time and still has an appeal to me. I did however have a great time and saw some really good graffiti. I was surprised to see an absolutely huge roller piece by Revok & Nekst. Nekst was killing it in NYC just about the time I left the city and it is good to see from some research on Flickr his work is nationwide, the guy goes absolutely huge.

Whenever I am in Los Angeles I always leave feeling like I didn't get a good grasp on the place and didn't really experience it even though I suppose I did, it is such a strange place to me.

And on another note since I haven't updated in a while, I once remember hearing from someone that everyone in Salt Lake dressed like they were about to go hiking. I thought it was the funniest thing I had ever heard regarding style in Salt Lake. I disagree with this...somewhat, but at the same time I say so be it and copped me a pair of neon accented Nike hiking boots because you will never catch me rockin' flip flops.

this is probably one of the best dance songs i've ever heard... just a great song PERIOD. it's no surprise really with the name la riots attached to it. they consistently knock it out of the park (and that's not faint praise). save a couple other acts (designer drugs included), it's hard to find consistency out there.

what's great about this... is that it fits in perfectly with the "emotional dancefloor" i'm always talking about. it's incredibly cathartic and evokes a very certain emotion... while still keeping the strong beat and uptempo energy. it's a balancing act that requires some real talent.

Today is the 16th anniversary of Sa-I-Gu, the LA Riots - April 29, 1992. It's sad that it is an event that has been forgotten by the national consciousness, in the same way Hurricane Katrina is a distant memory. The month of April is memorable for me because it is the day of my birthday. But my birthday is sandwiched between two events that I will always remember - (April 16th - the Virginia Tech shootings) & (April 29th - Sa-I-Gu - the LA Riots).

I remember being too young to realize the full gravity of the L.A. riots. I remember my parents and the Korean community being so distraught. The effects of the riots were felt throughout the Korean community all over the nation and even back to South Korea. I remember my father being so angry and I didn't know why. As I've gotten older, I realize that my father was swallowing the bitter pill of the false promises of the American Dream.

I remember hearing about the death of Eddie Song Lee. He had heard about the riots on Korean language radio and drove down to Koreatown to help Koreans protect their businesses. But in the confusion of everything that was happening, Eddie Lee was accidentally killed by another Korean storekeeper. An 18 year old Korean American kid who was sacrificing his own dreams and spending most of his time helping his parents with their business had his life taken away so tragically and so unnecessarily.

I look back and remember the stupidity of both conservatives and liberals. Conservatives used the L.A. riots to reinforce Koreans as the model minority who did the right things and didn't speak out against racism. Koreans were unfairly attacked by African Americans who were bogged down in the victim mentality of past racism. Conservatives also used Koreans as vindication for the Second Amendment as the media focused on Korean shopkeepers protecting their stores with shotguns. Ignorant conservatives were using the riots as a way to pit Koreans against African Americans to prove that affirmative action and government social programs were not needed and actually detrimental. Then there were the arrogant liberals who said the L.A. riots were a grassroots revolt against the system and that the Koreans were expendable collateral damage, especially since they were complicit in exploiting African Americans and Latinos. These latte liberals in academia, politics, and the media living comfortably in Westwood, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica were silent and indifferent to the plight of Koreans from the riots. The whole event showed that both conservatives and liberals used Koreans as pawns in their cultural wars.

It is up to us not to forget what happened 16 years ago. The first generation have had social amnesia over Sa-I-Gu. It is up to the 1.5 and second generation to take the mantle of leadership and speak out about what has happened since Sa-I-Gu. So many promises were made by politicians to invest in South Central LA. These have never come to pass. It's just easy for the nation to close its eyes and act like it never happened. But we need to open our eyes and deal with what happened 16 years ago and how far we still have to go today.

Here are some videos about the L.A. riots:
