"Life for so-called apostates in Iran has never been easy, but it could become literally impossible if Iran passes this new draft penal code," says Joseph Grieboski, the president of the Institute on Religion and Public Policy in Washington. "For anyone who dares question the regime's religious ideology, there could soon be no room to argue—only death.''

Grieboski points out that the text of the draft penal code uses the word hadd (prescribed punishment), which explicitly sets death as a fixed, irrevocable punishment. He worries that it could be applied to religious and ethnic minorities like Christians, Bahais, Jews, and Azeris by treating them as apostates.

Articles 225 to 227 of the draft penal code define two kinds of apostates: fetri, or an innate apostate—who has at least one Muslim parent, identifies as a Muslim after puberty, and later renounces Islam; and melli, or parental apostate—who is a non-Muslim at birth but later embraces Islam, only to renounce it again. The draft code says outright that punishment for an innate apostate is death. However, parental apostates have three days after their sentencing to recant their beliefs. If they don't, they will be executed according to their sentence. It isn't clear when this bill will be passed, though Grieboski says, "International pressure and attention—in large part due to our work—has significantly slowed the parliament's progress.''

However, Canon Gerard Tartaglia, priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Glasgow and lecturer in canon law at Scotus College, Bearsden, does not agree with the Archbishop of Canterbury's recent sense of urgency and believes UK law will evolve in accordance with the development of multicultural communities.

He will be discussing his views today at the International Bar Association conference in Amsterdam, during a symposium titled Religious and secular laws: mutual respect or mutual suspicion?

"I don't think we would have got this on the agenda of an international legal conference 10 years ago. The fact is that the law of organised religions is becoming a real issue for the law of the land. It is causing the whole of secular society to wake up to the persistence of religious values."

New York Times: Five men were arrested in Bologna in northern Italy this week after their behavior inside a basilica aroused police officers' suspicions that they were plotting a terrorist attack, Italian law enforcement officials said today.

The men, who were arrested on Monday morning, included four Moroccans, according to the officials. The police at the San Petronio Basilica, which is one of Italy's Gothic treasures, had been on alert because it contains a 15th-century fresco with a depiction of the prophet Muhammad among demons in hell that has drawn complaints from Muslims.

The arrests seemed to underscore the persistent jitters about terrorism in Italy and the intensifying vigilance of law enforcement officials as the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon approaches. Security around the Vatican has tightened, for example, and tourists at some Vatican destinations have reported lengthening delays at security checkpoints.

Just two weeks ago, the Italian secret service agency sent a report to the Parliament warning that the country remained at ''an elevated risk'' of attacks by Islamic fundamentalists. The report singled out ''ecclesiastic institutions and bodies'' as potential targets.

The Brussels Journal: Belgian police is protecting a 17th century pulpit in the Flemish town of Dendermonde. The pulpit in the Catholic church of Our Lady dates from 1685, two years after the battle of Vienna when the Christian armies of the Polish King John III Sobieski defeated the Turks poised to overrun Europe. The sculpted wooden pulpit, made by Mattheus van Beveren, depicts a man subdued by angels and represents the triumph of Christianity over Islam. The man is generally thought to be Mohammed. He is holding a book which is generally assumed to be the Koran.

Two years ago, on April 16, 2006, during the height of the Danish cartoon affair, this website published a photo of the pulpit to show that there is a long tradition of depicting Mohammed in European iconography. Last Friday the Turkish newspaper Yeniçag reprinted our picture on its front page with the caption “Stop this hideous insult.” Yeniçag demands that Belgium remove the pulpit. The paper writes that “after the Danish cartoons and Geert Wilders’s Fitna movie this is yet another insult to the Prophet.”

Særgudstjeneste i anledning af 60- års dagen for Israels uafhængighed den 14. maj kl. 19.00 i Sankt Johannes Kirke i København, Blegdamsvej 1, København N.

Gudstjenesten vil forme sig som en temagudstjeneste (uden nadver) med salmer, læsninger og prædiken, ialt ca. 45 min. Salme 121 vil blive læst både på hebraisk og dansk.

Efter gudstjenesten indbydes alle til samvær i Sankt Johannes Gården, hvor kirken  byder på israelske produkter - frugt, vin og juice - og hvor der også vil være mulighed for mere uformelt at bringe en hilsen og sige et par ord.

Men de skal åbenbart ikke glæde sig for tidligt. Udbrydere fra forskellige grupperinger på højrefløjen er ved at danne en nyt højreorienteret organisation:

The websites are talking about a new movement that has been formed - the Nouvelle Droite Populaire (NDP), composed of defectors from Le Pen's Front National, members of Bruno Mégret's MNR (National Republican Movement), and other nationalist, sovereigntist and regionalist groups, parties and individuals. This is not a political party but an assembly of like-minded individuals who espouse a policy of both decentralization, i.e., regionalism, and nationalism. After an initial meeting on March 29 to lay the groundwork, a second meeting on April 27 adopted the official name which translates as New Popular Right. Their website outlines the group's goals:

This structure is not a political party and has no intention of aggravating existing divisions. It is, on the contrary, an organization for the assembly and mobilization of energies that will work towards the reformation of the national, regional and French-identity based Right. It is possible to belong to the movement without giving up one's membership in a political party or another existing organization.

The fundamental principles of the steering committees are as follows:

1 - Refusal of immigration and Islamization
2 - Defense of regional, national and European identities
3 - Application of national and European preferences
4 - Rehabilitation of family values and fundamental principles of our civilization
5 - Freeing of individual, political and economic energies
6 - Construction of a political, independent and powerful Europe, faithful to its Hellenic and Christian roots

The steering committees for the New Popular Right will hold a national constitutive convention in Paris on June 1 for the purpose of defining its first campaign themes and implementing the structures of this vital new federation.

Ih altså. Nu havde biskopper proklameret, at en del af sharia skulle indføres i vesten og man var lige kommet i gang med en fornuftig dialog - og så kommer disse præster og siger der er forskel på oppe og nede, nord og syd og sort og hvidt. Er Jesus måske ikke også nævnt i både koranen og biblen? Ja så er det jo to næsten ens religioner. Det kan enhver da forstå.

Polen, Lublin - Nonner, jesuitter og andre godtfolk fra kirken slentrede lystigt henover catwalk podiet oprettede på den katolske universitet beliggende i sydøst Polen.

Fader Andrzej Batorski, jesuit, fortæller APF/Islamonline:

“We want to show that we live simply, and that even if we sometimes dress in an old-fashioned way, our clothes are a reflection of our lifestyle. We wanted via the fair to enable people to meet those who have chosen a monastic life, to show that they are just regular individuals.”

Den katolske universitet er den europæiske katolske centrum for uddannelsen indenfor munk, nonne og præst. 90 procent af den polske befolkning på 38 millioner af indbyggerne er katolikker. Catwalken vil med sin utraditionelle måde tiltrække flere unge til, at studere katoliscime, for der er i det seneste set et fald i uddanelsessøgende til især nonnelivet. Agnieszka Kranz of the Servant Sisters of Debica fortæller APF:

“Ten years ago, we had 25 novice nuns. Last year we only had six.The number of novice nuns sank down from 728 in 1998 to 468 last year while the number of new monks fell by half to 797. For the Polish Church, this is ringing alarm bells.”

Nu vil nonnerne måske have en ny udgave af deres religion? Det var da også på tide, for hvem kan leve et liv uden mand og børn? Islam har altid tilladt, at man lever livet og samtidig kan leve i en ærbar tilstand, hvor man har Gud som centrum. Smukt!
