<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>How's this for a laugh?&#160; In March, Berlusconi kicks Air France/KLM in the teeth for daring to try to buy Alitalia, for <a target="_blank" href="http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/04/02/business/02alitalia.php">Eur 139m</a>, plus buying up all the available stock, plus taking on all the debt - all Eur 1 BILLION of it.&#160; </p>
<p>Having knocked that one back, Berlusconi hands the job of finding a buyer over to the Italian bank Intesa Sanpaolo.&#160; Intesa Sanpaolo duly report that, very sorry, can't find anyone willing to take on this company, but here's a consortium of Italian companies willing to put a billion euros into the company.&#160; With conditions - that the Italian state take on all the built-up debt.&#160; Remember, that's 1 BILLION euro of it.</p>
<p>For how much?&#160; Oh, about Eur 300m.</p>
<p>What a deal!&#160; Cancel all the debt, grab all those airplanes and routes, for a piddling 300m euro?&#160; </p>
<p>Along comes CAI, a consortium of Italian businesses, who suggest that if the government take on the debt, they'll invest 1 billion euro in the new, debt free company.&#160; And who ends up being in CAI?&#160; </p>
<p>Intesa Sanpaolo.&#160; Now how's THAT for a conflict of interest???</p>
<p>The bank given the job of selling Alitalia tell the government it can't find any buyers and recommends a plan to sell the company to itself for a knockdown price!</p>
<p>So the unions reject the deal.&#160; CAI walk away.&#160; The Italians ask Air France/KLM if they're interested, and what's the response?</p>
<p>No, not now, not ever.</p>
<p>Why not?&#160; Is it because Berlusconi is hostile to foreign ownership of Alitalia?</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://uk.biz.yahoo.com/28092008/323/update-1-alitalia-rescue-shifts-focus-finding-partners.html">No, it's 'cos now Air France/KLM can get their hands on the company for a lot less by buying part of CAI!</a>&#160; They'be be STUPID to buy into Alitalia now, with all the conditions that have been attached, when they can share the spoils behind the scenes.</p>
<p>So now CAI is the only deal on the table, because all the foreign airlines aren't stupid.</p>
<p>Unlike the unions who rejected the Air France/KLM deal and are now a lot worse off!.</p>

Ainsi, à compter du 1er janvier 2009, Jean-Cyril Spinetta continuera d'occuper les fonctions de président des conseils d'Administration d'Air France-KLM et d'Air France mais il mettra fin le même jour à ses fonctions de directeur général d'Air France-KLM et d'Air France. </span></p>
<p><span style="color:#000000;">«Après avoir exercé depuis onze ans cette responsabilité exécutive à la tête d'Air France, puis d'Air France-KLM, il m'est apparu </span><a href="http://www.annonces100x100.net/-1/posts/6_Annonces_Animaux_et_leurs_accessoires/0/"><span style="color:#000000;">nécessaire</span></a><span style="color:#000000;">, alors que nous sommes confrontés à une conjoncture difficile, de promouvoir une solution interne assurant la continuité de la gouvernance», a souligné Jean-Cyril Spinetta. </span></p>

- En outre, en particulier lorsque le climat général est perturbé (guerres, craintes d'attentats, épidémies), les mesures de protection des marges (adaptabilité de la flotte, réduction des coûts) et parallèlement, le coefficient de remplissage des avions, indicateur clé, sont à suivre.<br />

Dans un secteur où les marges sont parmi les plus faibles (inférieures à 3%) les compagnies aériennes, qui ont déjà souvent réduit radicalement leurs coûts, cherchent à accroître le prix des billets. Selon certains analystes, les compagnies américaines vont devoir augmenter leurs tarifs de 15% à 25% pour atteindre la rentabilité avec un baril de pétrole à 125 dollars. Air France a récemment annoncé une nouvelle surcharge tarifaire, la troisième depuis le 22 avril, et a choisi de majorer, pour la première fois, sur son réseau long-courrier, les vols très-long-courrier. Dans ce contexte le modèle des compagnies « low-cost » est remis en cause du fait de leur marge de manoeuvre presque nulle pour contrer le renché rissement du prix du carburant. </span></p>

<p>Police in Germany have arrested two terrorism suspects on a plane preparing to take off from Cologne-Bonn airport.</p>
<p>The two men, both in their early 20s and of Somali origin, were under surveillance for months, police say.</p>
<p>They were said to be "possibly planning attacks" and had left suicide notes at their flats expressing their wish to die in a "holy war".</p>
<p>The KLM airliner, which was bound for Amsterdam, was eventually allowed to take off after a luggage search.</p>
<p>Police boarded flight KL1804 at 0655 (0455 GMT), police spokesman Frank Scheulen said.<br />
"The police did not storm the plane - it was done by ordinary police, special forces were not used," he added, contradicting earlier reports by KLM staff that commandos had made the arrests.</p>
<p>He said the suspects - a 23-year-old Somali and a 24-year-old Somali-born German citizen - were "under suspicion of participating in a jihad [holy war] action and of possibly planning attacks".</p>
<p>The remaining passengers were ordered off the aircraft for a baggage inspection.</p>
<p>The plane was cleared for departure just over an hour later and has since landed in Amsterdam.</p>
<p>Germany's federal crime office said on Thursday it was hunting for two Islamic militants believed to be on their way to Germany.</p>
<p>The arrests in Cologne are thought to be unconnected with that terror alert.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>German specialforces stormed a KLM plane in Cologne on Friday morning and arrested two terrorists according to news organisation CNN which quoted local media reports. The plane was believed to be bound for Amsterdam.</p>
<p>According to initial reports quoting the German news website of Bild, the two men arrested were a 23-year-old Somali and a 24-year-old German with a Somali background.</p>
<p>The police are reported to have found a suicide note in the home of the men whom they have been watching for two months.</p>
<p>The KL 1804 flight to Amsterdam was due to leave Germany just after 7am with 48 passengers on board, reports Dutch public broadcaster NOS.</p>
<p>Shortly before departure two terrorist suspects were removed from the plane, a KLM spokesman told NOS.</p>
<p>The plane arrived at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport at around 9.15am.</p>

<p>We zijn weer thuis hoor. Veilig geland op Schiphol. En zelfs in business-class teruggevlogen. Economy-class zat helemaal vol dus werden we in business geplaatst. Iets wat ik stiekem al gehoopt had.</p>
<p>We zitten nu in de trein naar Enschede en zullen zo rond acht uur aankomen. We hebben 't allebei wel gehad met dat constant onderweg zijn.<br />
Maar ja, zometeen zijn we lekker thuis!!!</p>

Vill varna lite för CITI-banks aggressiva försäljare. Man ska alltså få en bonusresa till London, Paris, Barcelona, Rom eller Amsterdam om man gjort 10 inköp. För det första säger dom att resorna till Rom och Barcelona är slut så fort man ringer. För det andra blir resorna allt annat än gratis. Dom landar alla på ca 1200Kr. Då ska man komma ihåg att man kan flyga till alla dessa destinationer för 1/2 – 1/5 av detta pris med Ryanair utom just Amsterdam. <span lang="EN-GB">Amsterdam</span><span lang="EN-GB"> flyger tyvärr inte Ryanair till. Åtminstone inte från Skavsta. </span>Däremot flyger Sterling dit från 998Kr. Jag tänkte ett tag ta denna resa med Sterling, men jag tvekade för länge och plötsligt kostade deras resa dit just detta datum over 1400Kr. Så då slog jag till på CITI-banks erbjudande då. Men jag kommer att säga upp kortet sen, för jag har redan andra kreditkort och CITI-banks årsavgift är ovanligt hög.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><strong>Boende:</strong> En båt som heter Vita Nova som jag bokade från Hostelworld.com. Kostnad 28€/natt. Ett fynd med tanke på hur centralt den ligger och hur fin frukosten var. Men tyvärr var sängarna i hårdaste laget. Men det fanns 2 extrakuddar och så lånade jag ytterligare 1 kudde från ett annat Svenskt par på båten och la dessa under madrassen och vips så sov jag ganska skönt. Såhär betygsatte jag boendet: </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">”A cosy boat. Close to central station and city. Very good breakfast. Only sliced vegetables missing. The beds are <span lang="EN-GB">not so comfortable. They could be softer. The rooms and toilets are small, but it works. Kompakt moln hela vägen utom precis när vi skulle landa. Såg lite av Amsterdam på håll under landningen. När jag landade var det ca 17grader och relativt soligt. </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Det gick snabbt och enkelt att ta sig in till Amsterdams centralstation med pendeltåget och det var även ganska billigt. Gick till vandrarhemmet. Det var nära stationen och var lätt att hitta. Checkade in och tog sen en längre promenad och kikade runt i stan och kollade var kanalbåtarna gick och var man köpte I AMsterdam-kortet inför morgondagen. Gick även till statsbiblioteket, som låg nära vandrarhemmet. Hade fått veta att man kunde surfa där gratis. Det stämde att man kunde surfa gratis och dom hade massor av datorer, så det gick snabbt att hitta en egen. Högst upp fanns det en restaurant och takterrass med hyfsad utsikt.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><strong>Dag2:</strong> Tunga moln och regn/duggregn under eftermiddag och kväll.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Gick först och tittade på S:t Nikolaskyrkan. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Sen gick jag och köpte I AMsterdam-kortet. Det kostade 43€ för 2 dagar. Man kan även köpa 1(33€) eller 3(53€) dagar. Jag köpte det där man köpte kollektivtrafik, för där var kön mycket kortare än på turistförmedlingen. Kortet ger gratis kanaltur på 1 timme, gratis kollektivtrafik, gratis inträde till massor av museer (men inte alla) samt 25% rabatt på massor av andra museer, restauranter mm.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Jag åkte kanalturen. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Sen gick jag in i Oedekyrkan, som är utställningslokal. Tyvärr fick man betala 3€till här för att dom hade en extrautställning. Dom har ett torn man kan gå upp i, men tyvärr var det bara öppet under helgerna, så jag fick stanna på marken.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Därefter gick jag in i Nieuwe-kyrkan, som också är utställningslokal. I samband med detta tittade jag även på husen runt Damtorget. Bla kungens palats.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">Slutligen gick jag igenom Amsterdams historiska museum.<span>  </span></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Sen var klockan för mycket för att göra ytterligare någon grej och det började regna.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Jag åkte runt lite planlöst med spårvagnarna(Linje 24 och 16 bla förbi olympiaarenan), eftersom det ingick i kortet. Det ska visst finnas en ringlinje också, men jag vet inte vad den har för nummer. Annars är det gångavstånd till alla sevärdheter i Amsterdam, så man behöver inte åka kollektivt.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><strong>Dag3:</strong> Molnigt, men sol ca 3 timmar under eftermiddagen.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Tog spårvagnen till museiparken.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Gick igenom Van Gogh-museet.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Sen gick jag igenom Riksmuseet. Tyvärr renoveras detta till 2013 och dom har bara en litet annex öppet. Dock har dom ställt ut flera av deras kändaste målningar där. Bla Rembrants Nattvakten.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Därefter gick jag till Van Loons<span>  </span>palats. En topp 10sevärdhet enligt min guidebok, men det kan jag nog inte hålla med om efter att jag varit där.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Sen gick jag till husbåtsmuseet med intressant kuriosa om husbåtsboendet i Amsterdam.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Därefter gick jag in i Westerkyrkan och upp i des torn med fin utsikt nu när solen sken. Rekommenderas verkligen, eftersom det är ont om utsiktspunkter i det platta Amsterdam.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Sen gick jag igenom Anne Franks gömställe. Detta ingår, till skillnad mot det mesta andra jag besökte, tyvärr inte i I AMsterdamkortet. Dock var det väldigt sevärt!</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Slutligen gick jag till Kattbåten, men den var tyvärr stängd på onsdagar. Den ligger annars högt upp i Singelkanalen och är öppen alla dagar 13-15.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Sen var klockan tyvärr för mycket för att göra någon ytterligare sak</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">På kvällen gjorde jag en kvällspromenad och tittade bla på Red Light Distrikt. Men jag köpte varken knark eller flickor där. Men bortsett allt detta var det ett ganska fint och mysigt område i den medeltida delen utmed en kanal.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><strong>Dag4:</strong> Soligt och fin sikt hela dagen under flygturen tillbaka.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Denna dag flög jag tillbaka. Flygturen var den mest fantastiska hittills, då det var molnfritt HELA vägen och flygplanet körde en fin omväg runt Mälar och Stocholmsområdet. Jag hade fönsterplats på styrbordssidan.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Tyvärr syntes inte själva Amsterdam så bra under uppresan, men jag såg Hollands kustlinje. Sen flög jag tvärs över Danmark In från Sylt och ut vid Århus. Lilla Bältbron och Fyn såg jag tydligt. Själland såg jag på avstånd. Över Århus var det enda stället där det var moln. Sen flög jag in i Sverige över Varberg och såg Laholmsbukten och Skälderviken på håll. Sen flög jag över Ulricehamn och sen såg jag Jönköping , Vättern och Visingsö. Sen tror jag att jag flög precis över Falköping(Planet girade lite åt babord). Sen sneddade jag Vättern över Hjo och Motala. Jag såg Linköping, Norrköping och Vikbolandet på håll.</span></p>

Först ut över Mälaren över Eskilstuna. Sen började han svänga över Enköping och jag såg Strängnäs på håll. Sen flög han på låg höjd över Mälaröarna Färingsö, Munsö/Ekerö och jag såg även Adelsö samt Björkö/Birka. Jag såg även Drottningholms slott. Sen svängde han igen över västra Stockholm o jag såg tydligt Stockholms innerstad och Bromma. Sen upp över Spånga/Kista. Jag såg tex. Kistaskrapan. Sen Sollentuna, Edsviken och Upplands Väsby innan planet landade.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Min guide rekommenderar Museum Amstelkring som bla har en lönnkyrka. Ingår dock inte i kortet. Guden rekommenderar även Beginjhof som ska vara en klosterliknade byggnad med bla en kyrka och ett kapell.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Nemo-museum är nog mest för barn, men jag ångrar att jag i alla fall inte gick ombord och tittade på 1700-tals-västdienfararen. Säkert inte lika genuin och segelbar som Götheborg, men intressant ändå.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Kattbåten som jag nämnt tidigare.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">Sen finns det fler intressanta kyrkor, Judiska och Bibliska museet samt Allard Piersons Museum föremål från antiken. Säkert inte lika fint som motsvarande museer i London, Paris och Berlin, men ändå…</span></span></p>

<p><span style="color:#0099ff;">Veel te vroeg zit ik in de trein om van Ede naar Amsterdam te reizen. Hier moet ik mee op een vroege vlucht van KLM naar Frankfurt. Op het moment dat we Amsterdam Bijlmer passeren open ik mijn ogen...en mijn camera. </span></p>

Restano gli ospiti previsti, Stefano Allasia della Lega e Aldo Reschigna del Pd oltre che Franco Garnero,  giornalista del Giornale del Piemonte. Quali le cause, le conseguenze e le possibili prospettive dell'abbandono, da parte della Cai, del tavolo di trattative con i sindacati. Berlusconi accusa i sindacati di aver fatto saltare le trattative. Le immagini dei lavoratori Alitalia che hanno esultato per il fallimento della trattativa hanno fatto il giro del mondo. Adesso, tramontata Air France-Klm, sparita Areoflot, c'è un'ipotesi Lufthansa, ma lo scenario più probabile è quello dei libri contabili in tribunale.</p>

Ieri pomeriggio è definitivamente naufragata la trattativa per l&#8217;acquisizione di Alitalia da]]></description>

<p align="justify">Ieri pomeriggio è definitivamente naufragata la trattativa per l'acquisizione di Alitalia da parte dei <em>capitani coraggiosi</em>, gli impreditori italiani capeggiati da Roberto Colaninno. Subito Berlusconi non ha perso tempo per levare i dubbi che una parte - anche minima - della colpa fosse sua. Le vere carogne? I sindacati, quei comunisti rompiballe.</p>
<p align="justify">Dal mio personalissimo punto di vista le colpe sono di tutti i personaggi in gioco. Degli imprenditori - troppo facile farsi regalare la società lasciando i debiti ai contribuenti e pretendere anche che i soli a fare sacrifici fossero i lavoratori - ma anche dei sindacati. Quei sindacati che per vent'anni hanno avuto un schifosissimo comportamento. Protetti da quei lavoratori che sono stati in grado di scioperare per l'inutilità più assurda - mancava solo che sciperassero perchè volessero le zucchine nel menù al posto dei carciofi - e che hanno portato la compagnia al fallimento. Dal primo all'ultimo. Ora paghino le conseguenze della loro stupidità. </p>
<p align="justify">Mi stupisce invece che nessuno abbia chiamato in causa gli amministratori di Alitalia. Cos'han fatto di così tanto esaltante da meritarsi lo stipendio - sicuramente milionario - la buonauscita - molto buona! - e magari qualche premio - «<em>Complimenti! Lei ha perso 20 milioni in più del suo predecessore. Ecco un bonus in busta paga!</em>». Con tutti i soldi che han <strike>rubato</strike> guadagnato ad amministrare un morto volante sarebbero da chiamare uno ad uno e fargli restituire fino all'ultimo centesimo del loro - immeritato - stipendio. Ma le colpe più gravi - guarda te, come sempre! - le ha la politica.</p>
<p align="justify">Tutti. Indistintamente. Destra e sinistra. Di ogni colore, storia, cultura e ignoranza. Si sono alternati governi alla guida del paese senza che nessuno abbia avuto la volontà o anche solo il coraggio di affrontare il problema. Paura di perdere consensi elettorali, posti liberi dove piazzare amici e raccomandati o semplicemente timore di affrontare in modo serio un problema reale.</p>
<p align="justify">E il futuro cosa riserva?<br>Una altra cordata italiana che abbia il coraggio di dialogare con questi sindacati e abbia il fegato per spendere soldi ed energia per l'aquisto di una carcassa.<br>Il fallimento. Che forse non è neppure così tragico come si vuol far credere.<br>La vendita a qualche compagnia straniera. <em>Air France-KLM, British Airways, Iberia</em> e <em>Lufthansa</em> sono alla finestra. Vedremo se Berlusconi accetterà di contraddire la propria campagna elettorale - basata sulla difesa dell'italianità dell'azienda - per salvare Alitalia.</p>

<span style="text-decoration:underline;">29 febbraio</span> - Alitalia informa che al 31 gennaio l'indebitamento è salito a 1,28 miliardi di euro e le disponibilità e crediti finanziari a breve sono ridotti a 282 milioni (-23,2% in un mese)<br />
<span style="text-decoration:underline;">3 marzo</span> - Il Consiglio di Stato accoglie il ricorso di Air One contro l'acquisizione, da parte di Alitalia, del gruppo Volare e ordina di rinnovare la gara.<br />

<span style="text-decoration:underline;">11 marzo</span> - Il Consiglio di Stato respinge la richiesta di sospensiva con la quale Air One aveva chiesto di fermare la trattativa tra Alitalia e Air France-Klm.<br />
<span style="text-decoration:underline;">14 marzo</span> - Al termine delle otto settimane di trattativa in esclusiva, Air France-Klm presenta l'offerta vincolante.<br />

Esamina nuovamente le esigenze finanziarie di breve termine. Dopo il sì di Alitalia e del Tesoro si va avanti nella messa a punto dell'operazione, aprendo anche il tavolo con i sindacati.<br />

<p class="first"><strong>A consortium of investors has warned Italian trade union leaders they have just hours to accept a rescue plan for failed national airline, Alitalia.</strong></p>
<p>The consortium said if the acceptance did not come before an investors' meeting at 1400GMT on Thursday, the package would be withdrawn.</p>
<p>The deal would include longer working hours and 3,000 job cuts.</p>
<p>Union protests forced Alitalia, which is losing 2.1m euro ($3m; £1.7m) daily, to cancel 40 flights on Wednesday. <!-- E SF --></p>
<p>The carrier, which is operating under a bankruptcy commissioner, faces liquidation if a deal is not reached.</p>
<p>The airline says it is running out of money to buy aviation fuel.</p>
<p>Under the rescue proposal, the Italian consortium has put forward a 1bn euro offer for the airline.</p>
<p>Alitalia would merge with Air One, the country's second largest airline, and its 1.2bn euro debt would be absorbed by a second firm, which would then be liquidated.</p>
<p><strong>Disgruntled pilots</strong></p>
<p>Italy's four main union organizations - CGIL, CISL, UIL and UGL - have already signed up to the agreement with the consortium CAI, but five other unions have rejected the deal as "useless and provocative".</p>

<p>The new Alitalia would employ about 12,500 people including 1,500 pilots, 3,300 cabin staff and 7,650 technicians, workers and managerial staff, Italy's Ansa news agency reported.</p>
<p>Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has pledged to do all he can to save Alitalia, in which the Italian government holds a 49.9% stake.</p>
<p>In April, plans for the airline to be bought by Air France-KLM collapsed.</p>
<p>Alitalia suspended trading in its shares in June and filed for bankruptcy protection last month.</p>

<p>Alitalia still faces the risk of collapse as the Italian government sought a last-minute agreement between a consortium of investors and unions.</p>
<p>Here are some key facts about Italy's flag carrier:</p>
<p>-- Alitalia was created in 1947; 50 years later its annual traffic was 24.5 million passengers with a fleet of 173 aircraft. "Ali" is Italian for wings.</p>
<p>-- It now has weekly flights to 25 Italian airports, 45 in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East and 14 in the rest of the world. Its work force numbers some 19,000, including workers on temporary contracts.</p>
<p>-- The Italian state has a 49.9 percent stake in Alitalia; its publicly traded shares were suspended in June.</p>
<p>-- The airline loses more than EUR million euros (USD$2.8 million) a day, according to latest available data -- a three-month pre-tax loss of EUR215 million. Its net debt stood at almost EUR1.2 billion as of July.</p>
<p>-- The government gave Alitalia an emergency loan of EUR300 million earlier this year to stop it going bust. The European Commission is investigating to see if that is illegal state aid under rules that ban governments from propping up their airlines in what is, in theory, a competitive environment.</p>
<p>-- Alitalia last reported a profit in 2002, only because Dutch airline KLM paid EUR200 million to break an alliance.</p>
<p>-- The airline sought bankruptcy protection on August 29 and bankruptcy commissioner Augusto Fantozzi is in charge of overseeing the latest rescue plan or winding the company up.</p>
<p>-- When Pope Paul VI became the first pope to fly in a plane, in 1964, he flew Alitalia. Pope Benedict left Rome on a chartered Alitalia flight for France on Friday and said he was praying for the airline.</p>
<p>-- Former chairman Maurizio Prato called the company "cursed", saying only an exorcist could save it after negotiations with Air France- KLM collapsed in April.</p>
