Hurray!  Last time we tried to see an MIA show she was not allowed into the country and the show was canceled (I'm sure there's a news article about this somewhere but I'm too lazy to hunt it down); but it's OK MIA everyone messes up on their paperwork. We won't blame you for making us cross the US border and drive into the middle of the mid-west (that place is terrifying) because now we get to see you at your big comeback! It's a good thing we have tickets to her comeback show at the Deisel xXx in NYC (if anyone has tickets and wants to pay for us to fly to New York please leave a comment with your name and number).

There's more than one of these shows, and some other fantastic artists are playing this little Deisel Party Tour!  Like Uffie (isn't she like 12!? how does she get into venues?) Patrick Wolf (I saw him strip at a concert once), The Teenagers (Homecoming reminds me of this one girl...) , The Cool Kids (they were cool back before they had an album), Lindstrom (Best New Music; I wonder, if La ¡Cinta started a Best New Music could we "fork" music torrents like Pitchfork? I would want it to be called "tacoed"), and Kleerup (this guy looks greasy, but he pops the good pop).

Alright, here's some old news: MIA has sparked controversy in the past.  If you hadn't seen it already here's DeLon's MIA dis-song/video, it's kind of graphic, and it's basically a lot of finger pointing by DeLon to help hype DeLon.  He's a lame MC, but if you're at all interested in the politics surrounding MIA you can always dig into the Interweb for plenty of fish... ur, uh, stories about it. I suggest starting at an MIA article on Pitchfork (anyone will probably do) and branch out from there.

        Obviaré que el espacio era inhumanamente reducido para la cantidad de gente que se encontraba allí. Obviaré que no hacía calor, si no lo siguiente; tanto que incluso a Lykke tuvieron que traerle un ventilador para evitar que le diera un soponcio allí mismo. Y ella, a ratos, le cantaba al ventilador. Nadie la culpa, todos los allí presentes hubiéramos hecho lo mismo.

        No, quizás no obvie nada. Y es que, a cada cosa su nombre, y si aquello era una ratonera, pues era una ratonera y no una sala de conciertos; que cuando la gente se tiene a marchar a medio concierto (de 45 minutos, todo sea dicho) porque no aguanta ni un minuto más intercambiar sudores, empujones y demás con el resto de los asistentes, la situación roza lo patético, si no lo sobrepasa.

        Y ella... ¡ah, sí, ella! Que al final -cuando se anda, involuntariamente, tan ocupado en procurarse la cantidad de aire vital para seguir viviendo- y con tanto contratiempo uno ya no sabe ni a qué ha venido. En fin, ella. Ella, divina. Como en los vídeos, como en el disco.

        Como decía mi amiga Andrea, única valiente- de cinco- que sobrevivió al concierto completo conmigo: ¡Monísiiima, monísiiima! Pues eso, la mar de mona Lykke, con un estilismo acorde a su fama de cool underground; reminiscencias bling-bling en plata y -os lo dije- el ombligo al aire.

Little Jackie - The World Should Revolve Around Me
Excellent, breezy, slightly-too-late-for-Summer pop that's mainly notable for being great, but also for marking a long-overdue return to the mainstream for Imani Coppola. No reason for this not to be massive.

Mystery Jets – Half In Love With Elizabeth
Harking back to the ramshackle oddball-pop of Making Dens, the third single from Twenty-One doesn't quite hit the highs of its predecessors. Still pretty damn catchy though, hey?

Roots Manuva – Again And Again
The friendly, unthreatening face of UK hip-hop returns. Here as likeable and smile-inducing as ever, with a nice video about cricket thrown in for good measure. Almost certainly impossible to hate.

Red Blooded Women – You Made Your Bed
Is it new girl band season? Trashy, but less bad than City Girls. Not quite the full package, but less dull than the Saturdays. Oh, and it steps up a gear about 2/3rds of the way through, which is what all the best pop songs do. Coincedentally, that's also the point in the video where they start playing spin the bottle with their vodka. Is this just really cheap soft porn? Time will tell. Out of this torrent of girl bands, we're bound to get an actually brilliant one at some point soon. Probably.

Does It Offend You, Yeah? - Dawn Of The Dead
While they're not really all that, I reckon DIOYY?, daft name aside, are unfairly maligned. This has got a bit of a glossy Duran Duran feel to it, and though the chorus doesn't really lift off as you'd want it to, it still works for me.

Fujiya & Miyagi – Knickerbocker
I'm not overly familiar with these Brighton-based Krautrock-afficianados, but this is really quite excellent. As repetitive and monotonous as you'd expect, but listen to it a few times and you'll be wandering around all day with it stuck in your head. Vanilla, strawberry, knickerbocker glory... yep.

Grace Jones – Corporate Cannibal
Self-evidently the most bizarre single anyone has released in 2008. Looking and sounding like a low-rent Doctor Who bad guy, Ms Jones has actually buried a decent, trip-hoppy chorus somewhere in the middle of this record. It's hard to keep a straight face through the rest of it. But hey, at least it's different, right?

Sportsday Megaphone – I Think It’s Love
Bedroom-produced low-key casio-disco from Sportsday Megaphone, or Hugh Frost to his mum. No immediate evidence of pop crossover potential, but charming enough and plenty of fun.

Alphabeat – Boyfriend
Here comes a lazy review: it's much better than 10,000 Nights, but much, much worse than 'Fascination.' Needs to loosen up a bit. Cheerful vocals imply fun, but the music doesn't deliver it.

Manda Rin – DNA
I wanted to like this. Manda had some great (indie-)pop moments with Bis, but this isn't really up to standard. Dated production, deliberately going for that overdone Tom Tom Club style, but missing the mark. The vocals are moderately charming, but there's little else to add. Shame. (Apropos of nothing, I'm treating this as an excuse to link to an under-appreciated classic Bis single.

Miley Cyrus – See You Again
I have to confess to almost total ignorance of the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus 'phenomenon.' Since I'm not American and/or teenage, this is probably not such a surprising fact. This is solid, if unspectacular, teenpop that has its moments, but a one-note chant in place of a chorus.

Blackout Crew – Put A Donk On It
Pretty much sounds like the Chuckle Brothers off their tits in a recording studio. What else is there to say?

Patrick & Eugene – Don’t Stop
This is a bit too self-consciously quirky, isn't it? It's for the same sort of grinning goons who liked that Lemon Jelly song about ducks, isn't it? Oh how delightfully random, Tarquin! Wrong.

Glasvegas – Daddy’s Gonelr
The time has come when I must stop sitting on the fence about Glasvegas. So here I go... I like sentimental lyrics; I find theirs mawkish. I love Scottish accents in music; I really dislike this guy's voice. I appreciate wall-of-sound production; I think it adds nothing here. In summary: I don't get it.

Den andra anledningen är att jag måste se till att inte stöta mig med mina kunder. Visst, jag tror på en öppen dialog, men jag vet inte hur bra det är för affärerna om jag skulle skriva det jag känner på min vanliga blogg (Ja, jag har faktiskt en sån också).

Deeped skriver om lite om handles och nicknames. Han har även en liten frågeställning som jag ska försöka svara på.

1. Hur skapade du din blogg titel/namn? Eller om du använder en handle/pseudonym när du kommenterar (som jag gör: deeped) - hur fick du den?

   Ärligt talat satt jag bara på WordPress.com och försökte hitta något som var ledigt. Sen plötsligt började Kleerup - Thank You for Nothing igång i iTunes. Och det visade sig vara ledigt.
    

2. Vad är historien bakom namnet/titeln/din handle?

Mais cette année, la tendance semble s’inverser et j’aime les filles qui crient quand elles chantent, celles qui jouent de la guitare ou qui ont un joli timbre suave.

Si t’es parisien et que tu n’as pas entendu parler de Lilly Wood and the Prick, tu n’es pas digne d’en être un ! Ben et Nili écument depuis quelques années les salles les plus cool de la capital (Flêche d'Or, Pop In, Baron, Paris Paris,...) accompagnés de leur noyau dur de fans inconditionnels.
La voix de Nili, la jolie chanteuse au look rétro-folk, rappelle une certaine Cat Power ; son acolyte Ben est un joueur de guitare à la crinière hirsute.
Inutile donc de dire à quel point je les aime.

Pour finir, si tu aimes les Yeah Yeah Yeahs et/ou les L7, the Coathangers est ton nouveau coup de cœur.
Les mélodies de ces quatres minettes déchaînées d’Atlanta sont un peu light, il est vrai, mais elles font tellement bonnes copines rigolotes, qu’on a envie de s’amuser avec elles.

Nu hade jag iaf väldigt svårt att skiljas från mitt band och klippte faktiskt inte av det förrän strax innan vi skulle gå till jobbet imåndags. Anna nämnde något om snuskiga tonåringar som hade sina bakterieband på sig i flera år.

Torsdagen avslutades iaf med Kleerup och där har jag hittat en ny artist att springa till. Har väl aldrig blivit så sugen på att springa när jag har lyssnat på musik. Kan se mig springa flera mil som en maskin, med hjälp av beatsen så går benen till slut av sig själv. Hur bra som helst.

Inutile de préciser que nous sommes passés en "économode" chez FYM depuis quelques jours. Tu l'as constaté par toi même, la fréquence des posts a largement baissé...

Entre la soirée Useless de samedi dernier à organiser, la chaleur sourde et aveugle qui s'est brutalement abattue sur la ville dernièrement et une vieille fatigue accumulée depuis le début d'année, nous avons décidé de basculer le blog en version light...

Mais on ne pouvait décemment pas te laisser partir sans du bon son dans tes oreilles et toute l'équipe s'est donc pliée à l'exercice ludique et gratifiant de la bonne vieille compil' de vacances...

Non, l'abstract Hip Hop n'est pas mort. Flying Lotus, fleuron de la nouvelle scène hip hop alternative californienne, nous offre un hommage à la diva de la soul Roberta Flack. Et ce n'est qu'un des nombreux moments de magie qui parsèment l'album de ce producteur-alchimiste passer maître de l'art de construire des atmosphères envoûtantes.

Holy Fuck - Lovely Allen

Il y a parfois des titres qui emportent tout sur leur passage, qui atteignent des sommets d'intensité inégalables et que l'on se prend à rêver d'écouter avec 10 000 autres personnes en transe. Holy Fuck !

Thom Yorke - The Eraser (XXX Change remix)

J'aurais jamais cru pouvoir écouter un titre de Radiohead en décapotable, lunettes de soleil sur le nez et casquette vissée sur le crâne. D'abord parce que je n'ai pas de décapotable mais aussi et surtout parce que la musique de Radiohead faisait jusqu'à présent parti de ces longues soirées d'hiver un brin nostalgique où je repense à des choses pénibles... Et puis là, non ! XXX change a réalisé sur The Eraser une opération de chirurgie esthétique plutôt réussie où la nostalgie de Thom s'est presque muée en béatitude. De là à parler de joie...

Deadmau5 - Hi friend

Minimale is dead. Ça, on l'avait compris. Deadmau5 lui met un grand coup sur la tête et sort l'artillerie lourde avec ce titre qui ferait danser un régiment allemand. Mais faites l'amour hein pas la guerre (!).

Lou Reed - Walk on the wild side

Parce ce qu'à un moment donné, il faut savoir s'arrêter ou du moins ralentir, parce que
New-York/Berlin/Londres/Paris is the place where they said... parce qu'à l'époque, on savait écrire des putains de chansons, parce que, parce que...

Free Your Mind Muxtape

so as a gay i've been listening to both madonna's 'hard candy' album and cyndi lauper's 'bring ya to the brink' and i feel the need to compare the two.

first up: hard candy.

so to start the cover sucks. madonna looks about 90 and airbrushed to within an inch of her life. definitely not her best. the producers she chose for this album also seem a bit passe. like timbaland is last year's news madge; aren't you supposed to find little-known, up-and-coming producers and exploit them for your own gain? seriously, timba's like the village bike, everyone's had a ride and a number 1. madonna should always define the now, and this feels like 5 minutes ago, not a good start. overall, the music's pretty good except the insufferable 'incredible' (which is like 'hey you pt. 2'). the best track on the album is 'she's not me' which is an absolute stormer. there is definitely something immediate about a great madonna song that i love. other standouts are 'the beat goes on' and 'heartbeat.' 'hard candy' is pretty good, it's just not as exciting as 'confessions on a dancefloor' or even 'american life' which at least took some artistic risks.

the challenger: bring ya to the brink

the title may be a bit shit but the album cover is head and shoulders above what madonna's got on display. it's arty and gay without putting off too many straight people: perfection. as for production duties cyndi drafted in only the hippest of electro and pop producers to give the album a very 'now' feel, which obviously means synths-a-kimbo. we're talking the likes of basement jaxx, kleerup and the fantastic dragonette: a truly stellar line-up that doesn't disappoint. 'bring ya to the brink' is a total revelation: every track is stellar with lead single 'into the night life' being the most immediate and infectious. my current favourite track is the quirky 'rocking chair' but other high-points include the dragonette produced 'grab a hold' and the slower-paced 'rain on me.' the album as a whole is eclectic without being confused and it brings cyndi back into the spotlight with a bang.

conclusion:
cyndi kicks madonna's ass. the cover's better, the producers are better, the music's better, the music's more current and more gay. the cynic in me suggests that perhaps cyndi just made an album for the gays while madonna was trying to re-capture her straight american audience. the bitch in me suggests that cyndi was right and madonna wrong. either way for best album from a gay icon of 2008, my vote goes to cyndi.

 This track is a dancefloor killer. If you like MGMT's latest album (Oracular Spectacular) and also appreciate the sound of Justice, then you'll love that track, this is to become a club hit for the summer, for sure.

Lykke Li ft. Kleerup - Until we bleed

The Shout Out Louds are another band I've come across recently who also happens to be a member of the Swedish pop club. The Shout Out Louds illustrate what happens when The Cure meet Echo and the Bunnymen and they invite New Order over for dinner (which isn't really a stretch, because those three bands all live in the same condo, anyway).

Listen to "Tonight I Have To Leave It," and see what bands come to mind. When our search engine is up and running, I'm confident entering this song in our NewTunes search engine will serve up nothing but Cure, Echo and other 80s alt-pop offerings (which isn't a bad thing).

I've been to Stockholm, and it's not THAT big a place. So, no surprise that Kleerup (who I wrote about yesterday) was asked to create his own remix for "Tonight I Have To Leave It." You can hear that on the Shout Out Louds MySpace page.
