No concrete details as yet however it's a possibility that it will be in direct competition with Maximes for Friday nights, however I find this highly unlikely.

Scumbag DJs have been approached by someone on the inside however so fingers crossed. We'll have to wait and see.

King Street: This tile, designed for the elegant King Street Hotel in Alexandria, VA, gives our classic 4x8” brick size a distinguished antique look. Straight-sided and smooth underfoot, this tile design is the perfect option for kitchens, powder rooms…or hotel lobbies. Shown in "Providence" color mix.

Summer Kitchen: This 3½x7” beauty is slightly smaller than our rustic Wright’s Ferry and Traditional Antique styles. Straight-sided and smooth underfoot, this tile design also works well for kitchens and powder rooms. Shown in "Elizabethtown" color mix with extra wood ash

Rutherford: The second of our new, more diminutive styles, Rutherford has a slimmer profile with a smoothed surface (dimensions: 3¾x7½). Designed to create a perfect basket-weave pattern when installed, this tile is appropriate for other installation patterns as well (What installation pattern do you like best? See “Installation Possibilities” on our website for some inspiration). The Rutherford board pictured is in the "Mount Gretna" color mix.

This is number 60 King Street, once the Earl Grey pub, more recently a betting shop, and now empty.

Earl Grey probably refers to Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey who was educated at Trinity College and later became Prime Minister (1830-1834). The 3rd Earl Grey, Henry George Grey, and 4th Earl Grey Albert were also at Trinity,

This two storey, slate roofed, grey gault brick building was a pub since at least the 1870s according to Sara Payne's Down Your Street. The publican in the 1920s was called Isabella Rank. The shop next door sells coffee and tea, probably Earl Grey.

[This photograph can be viewed full size in a separate window by double clicking on the picture on this page until you reach the enlarged version further into the system]

This is one of the most important and informative photographs of King Street that has been found. It is a real encapsulated moment on a quiet sunny summer day when Brockville was unaffected by modern technology.

Some of the signs that are visible here, help to date the scene. On the left is Campbell’s Hotel (the former Willson’s Hotel) while operated by John L. Campbell. He owned it from 1867-1873. On the right is the International Studio of Photography, purchased from A.C. McIntyre in 1869 by George B. Murray, who moved here from Montreal. This photograph is probably one of his first advertising efforts The smooth stone-faced building was known as the City Block.

It is possible to see how King Street takes a bend as it goes westerly. In the middle background is the round-cornered Castle Block at Kincaid St., and next to it, the open grounds of the David Jones homestead. At the far end we can see the pointed tower over the Town Hall (now the Arts Centre).

In the first block on the south is George Landon’s Saloon, and beyond that is he big black boot outside William Hope’s Shoe & Boot Store. Further on we can see the golden key above Field’s Hardware in the Round Corner Block.

On the north side beyond the City Block are Edward Lawless’ Grocery, and John McMullen & Co’s. Bookstore. Just beyond the billboard is George Houston’s new grocery and liquor store. At the far end of the block is the jewellery store of Thomas B. Steacy (under the big watch).

Then beyond Court House Ave. is the drug store of William M. Fulford. This business was later taken over by his younger brother, George T. Fulford. The sign says “Exchange Broker and Tickets” Just west of Fulford is Robert Lipsett, selling shoes and boots at the sign of the 'fancy boot'.

The road surface is dirt, smooth and dry, being groomed and cleaned regularly by labourers working for the Street Surveyor. The wooden sidewalks are about 10 feet wide, and the intersections are lighted by gas lamps, lit every evening at dusk by the town lamplighter.

Source: The original of this great photograph is in the collection of the Brockville Museum, having been given to the Brockville & District Historical Society about 31 years ago, by the family of Col. F.C.“Ted” Curry.

They start the demolition of the old brewery on King Street next week. That'll be nice. Its not really the most attractive building in the area. What say we clear that old rubbish out and stick, say, 500 houses and flats there instead. That'll be nice. You can share the view of Carrow Road and Morrisons with all those other people who paid 250 thousand pounds for a flat now worth 150 thousand pounds and who don't even live in it. Should be a lively community feel to the place.

Perhaps you could all meet up and go bowling. Oh, wait, you can't do that.

The intersection around King Street & Varick Street was closed off today due to a scare created by young flimmakers. The NYPD received a phone call saying that there were two men with handguns and a a third man with a sniper rifle. In reality it was two college aged film makers shooting a movie on top of Kate Hudson's apartment building. According to video footage, they were arrested around 2pm by the police, rumor has it that helicopters were also called in. No further news so far. [more]

Ok couldn't resist. Couple more favourites that struck a chord with me on Sunday's urban shoot. First one was inside the cafe with the architecture from across the street as a "desaturated background" - that's the tones it was.

Now I decided to drop this one in twice just show how much difference a pic like this can be when it's in Black and White. People will react in vastly different ways,... but for me the B&W evokes far more from the viewer than the full colour - you get to see into the portrait.

And the second is in front of the window across the street - in front of none other than the snazzy Louis Vuitton shop! Great window. Brilliant couple. Expensive handbags in the window. And no, despite being open for business, they didn't offer a free bag to Melissa :-(

I finally moved to another place, which is bigger, cleaner and nicer. Before I'll post pics of the new house, I wanted to share two more pics from my previous place with you: The first one shows the 'window' of the bathroom - the hangers are there since we used that space for drying our laundry. The second one shows a fridge magnet featuring images of Viennese sights that I received as a farewell gift before I left Vienna, next to a Japanese (?) and a Canadian fridge magnet and the roster (Putzplan).

From Jo. Jo says...

King Street Between Hay / St G Tce. This is my absolute fave. There is a series of painted scenes hanging over the street. The best of which is the nativity scene - Mary looks as if she is wearing the hijab, whilst Joseph is doing his best Osama Bin Laden impersonation. The cow and the horse are quite animated looking at the baby jesus and who wouldn't be when he looks like an albino "chicko" lollie! And to top it all off, one of the angels is looking at the cow's bum and has her hands in the air as if she just saw something unusual...

Thanks Jo. I think Joseph actually has a false beard. The Bubby J does look a little uncomfortable if not lifeless. Would it kill someone to give him a pillow?

Mel Cheren, the undisputed Godfather of Disco, passed away last Friday due to complications from AIDS. He was 74.

Credited with playing a pivotal role in the rise of the disco phenomenon that swept the 1970s, Cheren co-founded the seminal disco label, West End Records, in 1976. Its tunes inspired early hip-hop artists like the Sugarhill Gang. The enduring imprint found its biggest audience with the amply-sampled smash, “Heartbeat” by Taana Gardner. To this day, over three decades later, West End Records still releases re-issues, as well as sought-after classics-leaning compilations.

A musical visionary, Cheren provided financial backing for the legendary club, Paradise Garage, from 1977-87. The venue on King Street in the West Village played host to the likes of Madonna in early years (probably a fact she’d likely prefer to deny) and it was helmed by the late, great DJ, Larry Levan, who cemented the club’s iconic status with his inimitable DJ sets.

Cheren wrote about his remarkable adventures in the autobiography, 'My Life and the Paradise Garage: Keep on Dancin’. Recently, the book was made into the film, The Godfather of Disco, directed by Gene Graham.

An avid supporter of contemporary dance music, Mel Cheren’s death is a great loss to the global dance music scene. He will be sorely missed.

The Godfather of Disco. aka, G.O.D. www.thegodfatherofdiscodoc.com

Unfortunately there is just too much development, which would make the cost of a full subway astronomically. However to be honest it is not really needed. With all of the talk about “Transit City” and the plans for major LRT improvements across the Toronto region little discussion has been some discussion about upgrading Queen and King Street. There has been discussion on resurrecting the idea of a subway or partial LRT / subway. But, there is something about the Queen and King Street that makes it not suitable anymore for subway use. There is a bit a “nostalgia” about the streetcar, especially in the downtown region of Toronto. However, improvements are definitely needed to improve the speed of streetcar service on Queen and King.

What some may not know is the fact that Queen and King carry enough people to justify a full subway. Granted, Queen and King does not need a subway, since it would just destroy the beauty of Queen and King. The amount of people using Queen and King justify it more than an extension to Vaughan or even the much ill-fated, uncompleted and neutered Sheppard Subway. Although there has been a lot of opposition the possibility of making Queen and King a “Transit Mall” this maybe the best option to fix the service needs of Queen and King. It may also be a better option to place Queen and King underground between Jarvis and just after University. On Queen, the original Queen Subway proposal already has a partially built subway tunnel. However, with a full "Transit Mall" between these locations it would not be necessary. Albeit, it could start at Church, instead of Jarvis. It’s extremely unfortunate that funds being tied up in the subway extension to Vaughan could have been used to built an elaborate LRT network around the entire city. Downsview Station is good enough and the extension to York University and beyond should be via a LRT network. In fact, let VIVA expand their own service using LRT technology to York University and let the TTC concentrate on service within the Toronto borders. But I digress!

“Transit Malls” exist in numerous places around North America, such as Calgary, Ottawa and places in the United States. It can work here! David Miller and city council need to move forward with a “Transit Mall”, with proper consultation. There will be opposition from businesses along Queen Street initially. However we are only talking about a small area of the downtown region. Adelaide and Richmond Streets parallel the downtown area and with improved transit service we may have the opportunity to make a substantial improvement to downtown life. Improving the atmosphere and experience of Toronto is a must. Those in opposition often quickly point to subways as the “answer” to everything. However, when you ask them who’s going to pay for it? Well, enough said! The same problems are happening now on Yonge Street now, north of Steeles. We do not need a subway into York Region; however we now have groups trying to stop the development of LRT’s for the region. Although I love subway trains financially they are just no longer viable. Queen and King can use a “Transit Mall”. It can do done, as long as it is done right!
