I was sitting in my backyard several days ago sipping my morning coffee when I saw this beautiful bright orange dragonfly. It was flitting around my table as to say good morning look at me. He would land on a wire lantern post and just look around. I thought oh, I need to get a picture so I ran upstairs to get my camera. This was too cool to miss. I also had just purchased a new digital camera and had to practice using it. I slowly walked up to him or her and started snapping pictures. I had no idea what settings to use. The dragonfly just stared at me as if he was saying "do you mind I just want to enjoy the sunshine" or " which way shoud I turn so you can get my good side". Either way I thought you might enjoy looking at my attempts to get some buggy pictures. I think some of the kids at the summer reading program "CATCH THE READING BUG" might get a kick out of them as well. Bugs have been on my mind for awhile as I prepared activity pages and worked on a Catch the Reading bug podcast for Billy Gorilly's Podcast for kids episode 11. Which by the way can be found on itunes or at billygorilly.com. Enough about that. I want to show you a couple more pictures. I am not sure of any of the settings on the camera. At one time I think I was on macro digital or something like that. The pros would probably cringe at my attempts. I just thought it was so amazing to be able to get within 2-3 inches away from this beauty of a bug and he did not fly away. I was also facinated with all the intricacies of his body. I hope you enjoy looking at these as much as I.

We are always looking for activities for the kids. Last Friday, one of the local parks had a free kids concert. The main entertainment for the evening was Steve and Greg. Personally, I have never heard of them before that night. Their music was great and rather fun to listen to. Sometimes it is hard to find good kids music but this was a good change of pace.

I read on their website that they have sold over 3 million recording and they are the number one selling children's music duo in the country. I can see why parents and children enjoy their music. I liked every song that they performed that evening. I though of it as Beach Boys type music but for kids.

It may have been a hot evening but it was sure fun for the kids and me. I did spend some time chasing my kids around but while I was not chasing them, they did have fun dancing and listening to the music. For my two kids, who are roughly 2 and 4, it was fun. I did not expect them to sit through the whole thing like little angels since they had a couple friends at the event to play with. Overall, it was a great experience for a family outing for the evening. I would highly recommend anyone to go see them perform live or listen to their CD.

More Fun Stuff from Billy Gorilly

Help your kids "Catch the Reading Bug" this summer with the help of Billy Gorilly.
Your kids can listen to Billy Gorilly talk with Mrs. Flicker Fireflybrarian about the summer reading program on his podcast 11 (radio show) it's free. Mrs. Flicker is everyone's favorite flying librarian. She is always helpful as can be and she is always bright and merry. She even has a song about her on the Billy Gorilly: Happy Birthday Gertie CD. Billy's pals Wendy and Timmy from the Candy Appletree Woods sing it. If you would like to hear a sample of it you can do so here. Billy also offers a very cute coloring page for you to download. The file is in .pdf format.

Billy's podcast episode 11 also teaches the days of the week and musical opposites. Featuring Billy Gorilly's awesome piano playing. Oh, and he offers free activity pages to go along with the podcast. Listen and check it out here.

Mrs. flicker also has key chains, t-shirts, book bags, stickers, and more with her picture on them (she is very popular) and people have been asking where they can get them. You can find them at Zazzle.

Keep your kids learning over the summer break so their brains don't turn to jelly. Your local library is a perfect place to help them get smart and stay smart.

Make Everyday Simply Splendiferous with Billy Gorilly

.

As you know, I am a great fan of eFolkMusic. There are hundreds of folk music artists on eFolkMusic from a wide array of musical styles. And now, it's even easier to get in on all the good music there (and, download it to your computer or ipod, too!).

.

I have 39 songs on eFolkMusic (in the digital albums Weird Duck, Hungry When I Wake, Lean In For A Kiss). 26 of those songs are free to members. If you are a member (one month costs only $4.95), you can download any of those 26 songs and any other member mp3s up to a total of 100 mp3s every month. And, if you don't use up all the 100 downloads, and you renew for the next month, you get rollover download credits, like rollover cell phone minutes. It's a pretty cool deal.

.

I also have one song which is free to everyone (members or not), Lean In For A Kiss, in the Vol 3 Digital Sampler. (And, you can download songs by 11 other artists and bands, too.) The information for acquiring those songs is after the fold.

Joyful. Soulful. Absolutely delightful.

We've been rocking out to Dan Zanes' music for kids--for the whole family, really--for over four years now and still do not get tired of it. Tired, actually, is probably not a word in the Dan Zanes vocabulary. This is music to make you smile, sing, tap your feet, and get up and dance.

It crosses all genres and each CD is just as wonderful as the one that came before it, making it next to impossible for me to pick a favorite.

Rocket Ship Beach and Family Dance have a special place in my music heart as they were the first two we got, but we all also love House Party and Nighttime too. And Catch that Train! of course. Its easier to pick songs than CDs, so here are some of my highlights:

1. Welcome Train with the Blind Boys of Alabama, on Catch that Train!

2. Pigogo, an absolutely beautiful and haunting song on Catch that Train! sung by a children's choir from South Africa.

3. Pay Me My Money Down and Rattlin' Bog from Nighttime.

4. In the summer and fall of 2005, my son refused to listen to anything other than Hokey Pokey from Family Dance.

5. Polly Wolly Doodle, Go Down Emmanuel Road, and Father Goose from Rocket Ship Beach.

Our current favorite is the new CD featuring Father Goose: It's a Bam Bam Diddly! Try, just try to put this CD on and not start smiling, if not dancing, the minute the first track "Bam Bam" starts playing.

We're big reggae and dancehall fans around here, but can't imagine anyone not loving this CD. As they say on their website, its a "rollicking mix of west indian folk music, rock, gospel, and father goose original tunes."

In March, we went to see Dan Zanes and the band here in Boulder with some friends. They opened with Welcome Table, my son's favorite song, and put on a wonderful show, but we were sad that Father Goose wasn't there.

So, after the show, we asked one of the band members where he was, and heard that he and his wife were expecting a baby any day. Of course, we couldn't think of a better reason for Father Goose not to be there, and we hope that he, his wife, and their new Baby Goose are all doing well!

The sun, it's dampening my enthusiasm for the office.

Just waking up to the coolness of the morning, with the sunshine peeking through the clouds makes me want to pack everything up and point myself in the direction of the nearest receding tide.

Granted, my office consists of the dining room table and an excellent view of our front yard where the robins come to take a cool morning bath and hang out on the porch. Not a bad deal in the realm of office space.

I just think the mere thought of endless days of vitamin D flips the "work" button into the off position. Or maybe it's all of the amazing festivals in Valley and around the region that are kicking off in the next couple of weeks.

I L-O-V-E festival season and all of the goodness that comes with it.

Yes, it's that time of year again. Wahooooo!

Here's what's happening around the region:

- Tickets are now on sale for the Comox Valley Shellfish Festival. This fun event that is packed full of good stuff for young and old is June 14 and 15 and various locations.
Whoa! It’s been a long while since I’ve posted a ukulele song, so today I’m postin

Whoa! It's been a long while since I've posted a ukulele song, so today I'm posting a song that seems to have become politically incorrect over the past decade or so: "There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly". Have you noticed that there have been several picture book versions of this song that have come out in which the old lady doesn't die?

In fact, nobody ever dies in the picture book versions of this song. That doesn't work for me.

And is it both ageist and sexist? I dunno. I never thought of it that way, but maybe I'm wrong.

I guess it's probably not a good idea to have anyone die in a picture book, unless it's a politically correct book like The Fall of Freddie the Leaf (remember that?) or Badger's Parting Gifts, that explains death to young kids. But I've always thought of this song as a goofy song. If you tried swallowing a whole horse (and of course the old lady is not going to cut that horse up into steaks and chops before she swallows it, is she?), you would explode, with a big KA-BOOM. And death by explosion is something even little kids get, I've always found.

But I've never performed this song for purely toddler or preschool groups, anyway. I've always done it for audiences that are at least halfway younger elementary kids - they're the ones who seem to get it best.

So here I'm including the way I've always performed it - very simple strumming and frequent interruptions to shrug, shake my head, and make comments. When you perform it, remember that the song is in 3/4 time, like a waltz, and that it should be sung in as silly a way as you can manage, even when you're being melodramatically tragic - which I always am when I get to the final verses. I sniff loudly and shake my head as you might imagine a Victorian undertaker would do it.

Have fun with it.
