The former ADV titles should start showing up at retailers later this year, according to the press release. I am curious if all of these titles will see a DVD relase, though... Funi had a number of their own titles already. With the Geneon pickups and these, they risk flooding the marketplace if they do too much, too quickly.

Also, there's this quote from the press release that makes me wonder if the ADV titles were primarily picked up for the FUNimation Channel and digital distribution:

“We are very enthusiastic about these titles,” said Gen Fukunaga, president and CEO of FUNimation Entertainment. “Not only are these excellent series, but they also fuel FUNimation's major initiatives in social networking, the FUNimation Channel and internet VOD. These new titles cement FUNimation as the leading anime provider for television broadcast and legitimate online content. These shows allow us to increasingly provide the best anime to our fans on their own terms.”

For now, I'll be happy and think that I'll eventually get the last DVD to go in my Kanon artbox... but I'll be very interested to hear the reports from Funi's AX panel.

So, I'm not actually expecting to see the final volume of Kanon sitting in my series artbox anytime soon, and that makes me (and Ayu) sad.

On the other hand, ADV has 23 titles in development, though Greenfield didn't have clearance to make any announcements yet.

I think that if ADV does actually manage to complete any deals, they'd better plan on releasing season sets. I don't know how many people are going to be willing to pony up for singles with all the problems the company has had this year.

Kanon 6 - the LAST volume in the series - is one of the four.

As one irate commenter pointed out on the message board: "Umm, ADV? You do not drop out of a series while releasing THE LAST DISC. Stop failing so much and give me my UGUU."

Amen to that!

UPDATE (05 July 2008): It appears that ADV's distribution rights to Kanon - along with dozens of other titles - have been transferred to Funimation. Details are a little sketchy, but Anime News Network has a full list of titles here (and the original press release is here). I don't know if they'll be able to ship out Volume 6 anytime soon, but at least there's a good chance that we will get it at some point in the future. (Preferably tomorrow. But now's fine, too.)

Hopefully there will be some news out of Anime Expo this weekend to give cause for optimism, but right now I'm wondering if any of the affected titles will see store shelves.

Whilst randomly browsing through site I came across a certain manga. WonderThree.
Onto WonderThree by Renga Kijima

Well first I looked at a small description. It said that you had to: "know about Kanon to understand the story".
First of all there are a few series named "Kanon". But of course there is one that stands above all, the visual novel based series by KEY, that Kanon.

But upon looking at the artwork, I said to myself: "No way is this a manga related to that Kanon". The artwork of most things related to Kanon is very.....positive looking with traits of the female characters emphasized heavilly.

Then I realized my error.

This manga is based of that Kanon. A retelling that depicts the characters differently and the story much more seriously (this is what I'm saying after 4 chapters read). The core plot point that has been changed is the fact that the main character does not have his amnesia which cause him to forget everything he did years ago, before re-entering the town he stayed in. This allows the sotry to move much faster

Overall it's intriguing. From what I've read, aside from a few things, I can't really say where the story is headed (ie. how it will be exactly different from the original). But the what stands out the most is the artwork's serious design and the personalities of some characters.

Artwork

Yuuichi (the protagonist) is drawn to be a much more serious character than he originally was. The female cast is drawn to maintain their the hairstyles that defined them (otherwise you wouldn't be able to call this Kanon). I spefically liked how the artist drew Mai.

Mai is drawn with a nice punk-ish look (giving her a jacket, as opposed to the long-skirt she is often seen with). Also notice Yuuichi's posture (yeah not the great spiked hair).

I personally love the a character designs (it's possible that there are few that I dislike). The art is very "sketchy" and I love sketchy art (almost more than I love solid art). One good thing about this artwork in comparison to other artwork related to Kanon (keep in mind this may sound confusing) is the fact that the characters all look the same.

Looking at the artwork presented in the 2006 anime. You can notice that the male characters have a somewhat different look to the female characters. While WonderThree gives all the characters the same design.

I'm not saying that "all-same style for gender" is the best, infact I liked the character designs of the 2006 anime very much (I really liked the good colors). But it's very cool the change it brings.

Let me just sum it up. The characters look mature and serious. And while contrasting the cute and perky characters, it's just a interesting thing to see.

Personalities

Yuuichi is serious and quiet. This interesting because since I have not played the original work so I have no idea what would be a correct portrayal of him, but the 2006 anime had him a very sarcastic. All the other characters however are a bit quiet aswell. So it's all the same.

I particularly noticed that Nayuki mentions Sayuri's 3rd person talk is irritating which I though was funny and also very demonstrative of how the characters are in this work.

Speaking of Nayuki, I like how the author made her both different and similar to her original design. The original Nayuki often has a semi-humorous-optimistic conversations with Yuuichi, those conversations are sort of maintained but with a different type of humor (or without humor at all).

Atmosphere

The most striking thing. Is the lack of dialogue. If you look at the other Kanon manga (which there are two of, here's one). You'll find lots of text on each page. WonderThree's first chapter has about very lines of dialogue for first 43 pages. I find this to be very cool because it allows dark but beautiful scenes to be shown without any distraction

Conclusion

I might write a full summary of WonderThree after I finish it. But I recommend it for anyone who watched Kanon. It's stylish, and it's fun to see it's approach at telling the story of Kanon

I can see flashes of everything in Kanon. I see Makoto together with bells, wedding veil, pork bun and Piroshki the cat. I see Mai together with bunny ear hairband, beef bowl, barley field, a sword and a broken window. I see Shiori together with a fountain, a pen-knife and photos. I see Sayuri together with her little brother, a giant anteater doll, a pile of blood and water guns. I see Nayuki together with snow rabbits, a red marble and strawberry ice-cream. I see Ayu together with taiyakis, an angel doll, a hairband, a wheelchair and a big big tree. I also see lots and lots of snow, tears, and emotion.

It brings back memories.

It has been a year or so since I have watched Kanon (2006). It's amazing that I am still able to remember the names of all the girls, ahaha. Only if I were to be able to remember all of the names of the characters in the KOMSAS book, lol.

Oh and BTW, tomorrow's my birthday. Oh, and I hate Hugh.

Day is bitching about the fact that Shattered Angels Vol. 2 is still not in stock at Amazon, which means I'm suffering right now.

ADV seems to be having distribution problems with its single releases. Red Garden Vol. 5 and Shattered Angels Vol. 2, both of which were released last Tuesday, are not available from several retailers, including Amazon, Borders, Best Buy, CD Universe, and Barnes & Noble. Also unavailable are today's releases of Kanon Vol. 6 and the double-pack Cosplay Complex/My Dear Marie. However, the Red Garden, Shattered Angels, and Cosplay Complex/My Dear Marie releases do appear to be in stock at Right Stuf, if nowhere else.

Boxsets do not appear to be affected for whatever reason. So, if you're looking for the latest releases of Maburaho, Papuwa, and Blue Seed (all collections), you don't have to worry. But I'm not convinced that anyone is looking for any of these, because Blue Seed has already been released in collection form three times (also, the singles were released both as VHS and DVD's), Maburaho has been released twice, and no one watched Papuwa.

Anime

OK, I haven't really been watching much lately, except the stuff that comes on Adult Swim on Saturday nights. All I have to say about that is that Death Note is very close to its end, Code Geass is kind of cheesy, and I'm disappointed that the Pizza Hut references were edited out in the American release. Anyway, I'll have a proper review very soon, because Lucky Star volume 2 and the final volume of Kanon are both being released tomorrow.

Manga

Both Yen Press and Del Rey have announced manga anthologies, titled Yen+ and Faust respectively. This is great news, because so far the only English-language manga anthologies available in the US so far are Shonen Jump and Shojo Beat, which aren't really marketed towards hardcore otaku. Yen+ will have titles such as Bamboo Blade, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, Sumomo Momomo, Soul Eater, Night School, Maximum Ride, and others. Faust will have both manga and light novels serialized, such as the novel xxxHOLIC: Another HOLIC, from which there will be an excerpt in the first volume. These anthologies will be released in July and August respectively.

Music

A while back, I heard a certain iTunes commercial, which featured Coldplay's song "Viva la Vida." Now, I'm sure you've all seen the commercial, considering how frequently it comes up, but if you haven't, you can find it on YouTube. Anyway, I googled Coldplay soon after seeing the commercial, and found that this was the only song by them that I liked very much. (I also discovered that their cover band, the Coldplayers is, in my opinion, slightly better than them, but I digress.) So, when their latest album came out, I checked it out, and found that most of the songs were pretty good. So I bought it. Apparently, this latest album is a big departure from their old ways, perhaps because Brian Eno is producing it, and it has create a bit of a schism in their fanbase. Personally, I think their newer work is better, but that's probably because I was never a fan of them to begin with. Just my two cents.

Food

There've been a lot of frozen yogurt places cropping up lately, and I must say that I prefer Fraiche to Red Mango. It bothers me that there are no wet toppings at Red Mango, like fudge or fruit sauce. I don't think either place has fudge, but at least Fraiche has fruit sauce. Another thing is that Fraiche has plain yogurt or chocolate, whereas Red Mango has plain or green tea, and chocolate beats green tea, hands down. also, I think the color palette of Red Mango (red, brown, and super-light pinkish brown) is weird.

So yeah, just some stuff.

So ever since I opened this blog, and a little bit before that, I became interested in music. Basically, I have only become VERY interested in music recently. And I dunno. I just seem to have a problem in my little head about dreaming too big and following the whole “Follow your dreams no matter they are” saying that schools and Disney Channel (and educational TV shows) like to push on us, no matter how unrealistic the dream is. Yeah, that’s me. But whatever, since I’m lacking an inspiration in just regular blogging, I’m going to write about how I would become a Japanese Pop Star. Or really, an Asian Pop Star.

The Johnny’s Way

BEFORE

So I’m sure you guys all know of Johnny’s Entertainment right? If you don’t know (which is rather surprising), they are the talent agency that basically has the hottest boy bands out right now in Japan. The boybands that constantly reach #1 on the Oricon Charts, no matter how much the material sucks.

So here’s how it would go.

First, I would become hot. You know, skinny, muscle, clear skin, nice teeth, and maybe some pale skin. I will then also take some singing lessons, and I already have the dancing part down. I shall then move to Japan and hopefully get into Johnny’s. However, by the time I ever get to Japan, I may be too old “to qualify” since most of the Johnny Juniors are mainly teenagers. But hey, you never know. I could become stinking rich and get there early. Or I might be discovered by them while on a school trip singing in one of the karaoke boxes. Although I wonder how Johnny’s actually gets their guys.

AFTER:

After I get into Johnnys, and become known as the guy who “is awesome at dancing”, I will eventually debut in a boy band. And of course, one of the best ways to become famous is to act gay. Now that shouldn’t be hard for me. I’m already gay myself, so I won’t have to even try. Besides, I’m mostly going to find my fellow band mates extremely hot anyway. I’ll be having gay thoughts about them all the time. Eventually, I shall end up kissing one of them in a public appearance, like how those 2 guys from KAT-TUN did. BAM, LOTS OF FAME.

Kanon Wakeshima’s Way

Ah Kanon Wakeshima. The one woman that actually REALLY got me interested in instruments. The woman who made me realize how cool a cello and violin really are (considering I never really exposed myself to those instruments that much) I guess you could say as soon as I saw her and her Lolita image with the cello, I fell in love. But anyway, here’s how it would go.

First, I would go back in time, and tell my younger self to force my mom to get me violin and cello lessons. As I take the lessons, I just become so good at the violin or cello, because of what is (hopefully) a “hidden” gift for me and classical instruments. I would then eventually get interested in singing, get a few vocal lessons, then move to Japan. I shall then expose myself by taking part in several orchestras and auditioning for a spot in a record label.

KOKIA’s / Stephanie’s Way

Ah KOKIA, one of the best vocalists in J-Pop right now. I really do admire her, and is one of the singers that actually got me interested in singing. I absolutely adore her to no end. It’s amazing how she has so many singing styles, ranging from just a regular singing voice, to traditional Japanese Enka, and even opera. And then there’s Stephanie, another person that really inspired me. I absolutely adore her and her amazing 5 octave voice. I wish I could do whistle notes like her. (Along with several American artists like Christina Aguilera) But then again, I’m a guy, so that’s unlikely.

But anyway, this is where I really will not care about my image at all. Screw the hot image. I’ll be average. Why not?

But instead, I’ll make sure to be taking INTENSIVE vocal lessons. Like, 3 lessons a week, from a professional. And and…I’d also take opera lessons as I get older. Yeah, that’s it. That’d be pretty awesome right there.

Ayumi Hamasaki’s Way

Now this is an interesting one. I wouldn’t show an interest of getting into the music industry at all. Yup, I wouldn’t care at all. Zippity doo. No music lessons, none of that. I would then somehow get discovered at some dance club in Tokyo by that dude from avex. Hey, if Ayumi Hamasaki can become one of the biggest stars in Japan and she never actually wanted to be one, why not?

Perfume / MEG / Yasutaka Nakata Way

Now THIS is the one I’m pretty interested in right now, mainly because of my love for their music right now. And actually, this is an easy way too. All I need to do is to somehow get discovered by Nakata. All I really need other than that is a cute energetic image, and that’s something I can do. And hey, I don’t see too many male artists with Perfume or MEG’s style.

Besides, who said you actually need vocal talents for this? MEG isn’t that great of a singer. Perfume can sing a bit, but they’re robotic as hell. Easy right?

Leah Dizon’s Way

Yup, surprising isn’t it? I mean, we all know Leah Dizon right? That model who became a singer because she wanted to. She’s like the Paris Hilton of Japan, just not as slutty, and with more talent.

Here’s how it would go. I would take a job in modeling. (If that is even possible) So of course, beforehand, I’d have to make sure that by the time I graduate high school, I’m gonna be FREAKIN HOT. I’m talking nice hair, nice skin, awesome smile, abs. Everything. (Well, almost everything) My modeling career would be very successful, and of course, I’d be modeling in Japan. Eventually, I will have enough money and publicity to actually try out singing. Hey, why not? Of course though, I’d take a few vocal lessons before, so I just won’t be that guy everyone listens to because he’s insanely hot.

BoA’s Way

Ah BoA. One of the most famous Asian pop stars and one of the most influential. And to believe she started her career at only 14 or so! Here’s how it would go.

Now, my sister plays the piano. Hopefully, there is going to be some audition from a company looking for new upcoming singers with talent. My sister would try out, and I would follow along with her. However, instead of my sister being the one to get discovered, the guys at the auditions will actually be more interested in me (somehow) and they’ll ask me to sing a song. BAM, they’d make a record deal with me while I feel sorry for my sister. Besides, I’m sure there’s enough female singers out there. MOAR GUYS.

The Hello! Project Way

I mean hey, who ever said H!P could ONLY be girls? I mean, just because their main group is called Morning Musume which translates into Morning Girls, and all of the groups consist of girls, who said I couldn’t try out? I mean Tsunku is part of it, (hell, he produces all of them!) and he’s a guy. D:<

So why not? I’d be the very first male solo artist in H!P. I wouldn’t mind to be in a girl group either. I’d blend in perfectly! (Most of my friends are girls anyway) Just as long as I don’t have to cross dress.

Utada Hikarus Way

We all know Utada right? She is one of the most famous J-pop artists of all time (aside from Ayumi and a few others), and is known for being the lady to have debuted with an album that has sold the most copies in Japans history. Yup, Japans history, and seeing as how sales are dropping, I don't see anyone breaking that record for quite a while. But how did she became so famous? Guess what?

She cheated.

Or at least, that's how I like to call it. Basically, here's how I would debut. I'd make sure to go back in time (or something) and SOMEHOW, make sure that both my parents are VERY involved in music. My mother would be a famous enka singer, and both my mom and dad would be music producers. Yup, I'd have access to everything. A studio, professional advice, EVERYTHING I NEED TO BECOME FAMOUS. And just like Utada, I'd make sure that my parents would allow to me write out lyrics to songs. They would then assist me in singing and creating my own debut single, and eventually, my own debut album, that will hopefully sell a million copies. But of course, beforehand, I will try to debut in the US but sadly fail. Hey, I have plenty of chances. I HAVE CONNECTIONS.

I’m more inclined to combining the Johnny’s Entertainment Way, with KOKIA’s and Kanon Wakeshima’s way. Like, I’d be part of a boygroup that can sing opera and they’re also a string quintent! Now that would be kickass right there. Oh wait, even better, combine this with Nakatas way. That'd be kickass. A string quintet combined with electronic music who can sing opera and pop. <3

Estas fueron adaptadas al anime, una temporada para cada una, aunque parece que Clannad tendrá una segunda. Por supuesto ya me las he zampado las tres, y ahora voy a por la película de Clannad. Leí que algunos consideran a Key como comercial, haciendo animes que se asemejan en muchos rasgos, como que las tres series son dramas, donde el personaje principal es un chico que se rodea de chicas, cada una de ellas tiene una historia super triste que contar a lo largo de la serie, cerrándose el caso de una y pasando a la siguiente, que estas chicas encandilan al público y es lo que hace que tenga éxito... pero las tres me encantaron (Clannan la que menos), y por eso dedico este post a estas tres fantásticas series, en mi opinión claro. La primera de ví fue Air, la primera que salió, después Kanon y finalmente Clannad, ya que cuando comencé a verla aún estában traduciendo los capítulos y no la pude ver de un tirón como las otras.

Air

Yukito es el protagonista, uno de los pocos chicos que sale en la serie, por cierto... Este va de pueblo en pueblo ganándose el pan haciendo malabares con un muñeco. Obviamente es magia lo que hace, su madre le enseñó a hacerla. También le contó un cuento de una chica alada, a la que tiene que encontrar...

Llega a un pueblo y conoce a Misuzu, una chica que va al instituto, y que le invita a quedarse en su casa,

ya que Yukito va vagando de una en otra. Y se queda en su casa, haciéndose amigo suyo. Después de esto Yukito va conociendo más chicas del pueblo, empezando por la madre adoptiva de Misuzu, Haruko.

Hay un momento de la historia en que se sale de la parte de Misuzu, y cuenta la historia de la chica alada. Resulta que antes había una especie alada a la que todos temían y exterminaron. A la última de ellas, Kanna, le echaron una maldición... que heredó Misuzu, se pone enferma... y comienza el dramón de la serie.

Kanon

Este anime se realizó dos veces: la primera vez en el 2002 con 13 capítulos y en 2006 con 24. La segunda tiene un dibujo que se asemeja más al de Air, para mi gusto de mejor calidad.

El protagonista es Yuuichi, que llega a un pueblo en el que vivió años atrás. Sin embargo no recuerda nada de lo que le sucedió en aquellos días. Va conociendo a varias chicas: Makoto, una chica que cuando conoce a Yuuichi parece enojada con él; Shiori(ella me enamoró...), que parece ser que tiene una grave enfermedad; Mai, callada y que yuuichi vé de noche con una espada luchando contra unos demonios; Nayumi, prima del prota, el cuál se queda en su casa... ella está "secretamente" enamorada de él -comillas porque ella se lo dijo hace años, pero el otro no recuerda nada-; y por último, y no menos importante, Ayu. es la chica más importante de la historia, le encanta el Taiyaki y... no diré más, sólo que acompaña mucho a Yuuichi, pero si me extengo tengo miedo de desvelar el final de la serie. Acuérdense, ¡el final se basa en ella!

Es una gran serie, a mi gusto la mejor de todas. Hay un momento de la serie en el que pienso: ¡Madre del amor hermoso! ¡¡¡Van a morir todas!!!- es que si hay algo que caracterice a key es el drama de sus historias-, pero como es anime, alguna que otra se salvó xD

Tiene gran calidad de dibujo, la banda sonora... me encanta ^_^

Clannad

Para mí, la peor de las tres. No está mal, pero no me llegó tanto como las otras... bueno, la parte de Fuko sí, pero lo demás, bueh, digamos que podría estar mejor.

Tomoya es el protagonista. Su madre murió cuando él era pequeño. Ahora vive con su padre, pero no se tratan. Conoce a Nagisa, una chica muy diferente a él. Ella tiene una familia ideal, un padre y una madre que se llevan perfectamente, trabajando en una panadería debajo de su casa. Se hacen amigos, y Tomoya descubre que ella quería ir al club de teatro, pero está cerrado. Entonces él comienza a reunir otras chicas y a su amigo -¡¡¡lo que les costó poner otro chico en una serie!!!- Sunohara, para ayudar a que resurja dicho club. La historia más bonita es la de Fuko, una chica misteriosa que se pasa la vida haciendo estrellas de mar con madera, para así invitar a mucha gente a la boda de su hermana. A causa de ello tiene heridas, pero Tomoya y Nagisa ayudan a hacerlas y a repartirlas... sólo por los episodios que tratan de Fuko merece la pena este anime.

Por otra parte, Tomoya y Nagisa se hacen amigos de: Kotomi, reservada, MUY resevada, toca el violín y es una de las mejores estudiantes de Japón, por lo que se pasa el día el la biblioteca sin necesidad de asistir a clases; Tomoyo, que tiene fama de ser violenta...; Kyou, agresiva, y al contrario que Kotomi, muy extrovertida; y su hermana Ryou. Todos ellos hacen una estraña pandilla, ala que le van ocurriendo cosas... para enterarse de ellas, ¡a ver el anime!

Yo sólo vi los 23 episodios de los que consta el anime, ahora me toca la película...

Conclusión: que vean las series. Son tres de mis animes preferidos, y siempre quise hacer un post dedicándoselo -ni que fuera una persona para dedicarle la actualización del fotolog...-.

¡Ah! Y aprovecho que posteo para decir que me voy de viaje a Barcelona mañana, así que habrá que perdonarme el que no postee más hasta el lunes de esta semana que entra no, de la siguiente.

1. My Name is…
The first track of the album starts off with the same progression and sound as Pachebel's Canon in D, but most of the parts are sung in acapella, and it sounds absolutely stunning. Gorgeous introduction.

2. キセキ (Kiseki) Song of Love
Pachebel continues in this song as Kanon sings high, stacatto notes to the Pachelbel's Canon and she sounds gorgeous. As the song goes on, it develops into a different verse that has nothing to do with Pachelbel's Canon. Kanon's written a song using elements of Pachelbel's song, and it sounds wonderful. She even has soft speaking parts in the background that is somewhat like rapping (I prefer to call it speaking rhythmically XD). I love the strings and flute in around 2:40-ish. There are parts where the melody sounds a bit awkward, but quite a pretty song, indeed. I love the "Kiseki wa..." parts where she sings to the fast-passages of Canon in D.

3. あなたへ (Anata e)
Kanon's vocals are delicious from the beginning. It's so light, so gentle, and her voice sings each note delicately. This is a beautiful ballad, and I love Kanon's delivery. The song is pretty typical, but Kanon keeps the song going wonderfully with her gorgeous tone and singing. The flute added in the background is quite pretty as well.

4. Wings to Fly～翼をください (Tsubasa wo Kudasai) (cathedral version)
I absolutely love this girl's head voice. She has such a gorgeous natural echo in her higher octave. The problems she had with her vocals in the previous albums are more or less gone here, and her voice rings so beautifully in this song. This is another piano ballad, but it shows up her upper octave, and has some solid piano work here.

5. Believe
This is a more dramatic piano ballad with the presence of some guitar and drums in the background. Again, Kanon's vocals are gorgeous, and just soar through the song. She adds a bit of drama in the chorus with the "Make me believe" line. The accompaniment is solid, and I enjoy the acoustic guitar solo.

6. Theme from Vocalise ( Interlude )
Wow, I recognize this melody from one of her later songs. I guess she adapted it into a song. In any case, Kanon mostly sings a lyricless melody in nearly an operatic fashion, and her voice sounds gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous. Gives me chills. It's apparently based on Rachmaninov, but I don't know my Rachmaninov, so I wouldn't know XD.

7. フタリ (Futari)
This next song has a different sounding rhythm, and it doesn't really flow that well in my opinion. Unlike other songs on the album, it features some gorgeous string work, and the beat is almost urban sounding, which kind of amuses me considering how non-urban this song is. Kanon's light voice works in this song, although her tone sometimes sounds like she's about to break-out in a traditional Japanese voice. Somehow it all works out though, which kind of amuses me. Also, for some reason, I don't get tired of listening to it, which is kind of odd because the song is definitely repetitive. Something about it amuses me enough to listen to the whole thing. It's kind of catchy after awhile.

8. Gloria
Yes, this is the same song as the one on the previous album. Instead, it has an improved orchestral accompaniment and better vocals. I adore the orchestral accompaniment here, and it has a much fuller and enjoyable sound to it. Kanon also sounds much more confident in this version, and the chorus shows a much fuller sound from her, rather than the tighter sound she had in the previous album. This is a massive improvement on the version on Hymn of Grace.

9. Tenderly
This song starts off with short, staccato notes in the background from the piano, and a harp-like instrument. I absolutely love how Kanon starts off this song with the words "Tenderly", and she sings it with such passion. She still sounds a bit tense in English for this particular song. Personally, I think the song gets a bit too repetitive with her constant singing of "Tenderly" over and over. It was nice the first time, but after awhile, you kind of hear her tenseness in comparison to her hymns or her singing in Japanese. It's a nice song, but a bit too repetitive.

10. Can't Help Falling In Love
I'm sure most of you know this classic song. Kanon backs up this song with long string and organ notes, and she sings nice. I like the speaking part of this song with the added percussion. It's amusing, but it sounds interesting in her style. I don't particularly like this cover of the song, as I find it a bit stiff for the song, but the speaking parts kind of loosen the atmosphere of the song a bit, as there's gorgeous instrumentation and singing during it.

11. ダイヤモンド (Diamond)
I absolutely love this song. It has a gorgeous piano backing, with harp accompaniment. The introduction is dramatic, while the harps add a bit of elegance to the song. As usual, Kanon sings beautifully throughout the song. She starts off delicately in the verses, and she has so much emotion in her singing. Her light singing is complemented by the gorgeous strings in the background. Her voice isn't as strong here as I would have expected, and the lack of development makes the song kind of boring after awhile. However, I adore the instrumentation in this song.

12. SHINE
Ravel's Bolero! Kanon uses Bolero as the introduction of this next song to play a pleasant string introduction before going into her own melody again. I love this version of Bolero so much. The chorus is basically that line, and Kanon's voice floats through the fast-moving passages so well. This is such a cool song, but I think that's partly my obsession with Bolero. The instrumentals are so epic and well performed. I especially love the bridge, even if they skip over my favourite triplet section. The song ends nicely with a bit of snare drum.

13. Lullabye (Good Night My Angel)
This final song starts with gorgeous violin and piano section. Kanon starts off being a bit strained and tense sounding in this song, but the melody of this song is just absolutely gorgeous. It's too bad Kanon sounds so tense. Where's her gorgeous tone? Such a pretty song, and she doesn't use her usual voice? I'm saddened.

Overall -
Favourite Track: キセキ　Song of Love
Kanon's second album is such an improvement from the first album. Her voice is as good as ever in this ever, and she hardly has parts in the album where she sounds tense. She is seems much more confident in her material this time around, and performs excellently for the majority of this album. I quite enjoy her spins on classical music as she adds something new to the classics. Her original stuff is also quite good, especially "believe". Small point of criticism: the album could use a bit of variety at times. However, it is a solid album, and has absolutely gorgeous singing and music.

1. エルシャダイ (Elushadai)
The first song off this album starts with Kanon singing beautifully. I personally would like a bit more confidence at the beginning, as it feels as if her voice is a bit shaky. She does a nice piano, though, but she needs to be a bit more sure with her notes throughout the song. A few of the notes are a bit off. The accompaniment of this song is beautiful, though with a nice lower string as the soloist. I personally find that Kanon's vocals could be stronger, but she got a gorgeous head voice.

2. Gloria
Kanon shows of a stronger voice here in her lower octave, although I think some of the notes could be help more strongly and longer at times. Her delivery is a bit choppy in the chorus, but her singing style works better with the faster moving melody. She also tends to tense up at the end of her phrases at times, making her a bit off. The accompaniment for this hymn is a little bit lacking though, with a tacky beat and the strings playing in the distance.

3. 冬～四季より～
For once, Kanon shows off her gorgeous voice. Perhaps it's because it's the first Japanese song, and the English songs she sings she sounds really tense and not confident in what she's singing. She changes when she sing in Japanese as she's a lot more confident. This song is accompanied by a simple music box with an emphasis on Kanon's classical voice. Kanon sings delicately, and shows a fuller tone. Nice song, although she's still a tense in the higher register.

4. The water is wide
What a pretty song. Kanon is still tense, but she's singing English, and she's showing her gorgeous tone here, even with a bit of tenseness in her voice. Quite a pretty song, although I wish Kanon would be more consistent with her tone, rather than switching back and both between a nice, free, full sound, and a tense one.

5. スカボローフェア (Scarborough Fair)
Kanon sings this classic acapella, and she sounds gorgeous. Her voice just echoes and rings in such a gorgeous way. She adds harmonies the second time around, and it's absolutely perfect. All the parts are in tune, and in time with each other. Gorgeous version.

6. あなたの声に心は開く-オペラ「サムソンとデリラ」より-
This song has a haunting atmosphere, but I don't think Kanon pulls it off. She does have occasions where her voice sounds nice, but she still sounds so unsure about what she's singing. Kanon's voice is too choppy, too tense for this song. The oboe and flute duets are really pretty in the breaks, though. I the accompaniment is nice, but the whole song sounds like it's dragging on.

7. Calling you
Wow, her lower voice is really nice. She starts off this more-poppier melody at the beginning with such a gorgeous alto tone. I'm actually impressed. She transitions to a lighter voice as the song goes higher for the chorus, and her gentle interpretation is spot on and controlled. Her English has absolutely no accent is very clear. The piano accompaniment is also gorgeous, and adds a nice, haunting sound to the overall song. Gorgeous.

8. Ave Maria (Schubert's Ellens dritter Gesang)
Regardless of what the title says, Kanon actually does sing this song. Now this is the Kanon I know and love. Her voice is well-supported, and she has gorgeous ring to it without being tense. She shows control over her voice as she does trills and moves around in this German song. I caught one awkward breaking in phrasing before the instrumental break halfway through, though. She does it again a little later on, so I'm assuming that one purpose, and not a random lack-of-breath moment. Still, it sounds awkward. Either way, the version is nice, although the accompaniment is pretty dull with the long notes being played in the background.

9. Ave Maria (Kanon)
This next song has a much nicer arrangement with a solo piano playing a soft, pretty introduction before Kanon sings in Japanese. The melody has nothing to do with Schubert's composition, and is actually a different melody altogether. This is actually a much more contemporary Ave Maria, and I quite like it, despite Kanon's voice seeming a bit under supported. The chorus is actually quite pretty, but I find the verses very choppy, but Kanon sings nicely to add a bit of crescendo on the notes.

10. Loving Grace
More gorgeous piano playing the beginning. It starts off with light, high notes before going into the middle range. Kanon comes in excellently with a soft tone that matches the light, piano feel of the song. What an excellent delivery of this song. Her light tone is sung with varying dynamics, while she still keeps her voice light and emotional. There are still small pitch problems, but the delivery of this song makes up for some of the small faults she has in pitch. I think it would be nice to have a more active vibrato at parts of this song. Quite a pretty song.

11. The Light
Kanon starts off in her lower tone here, but without making her voice too full, which is actually kind of interesting. Her pitch is spot on at the beginning, but she again falls in pitch at points of the song. This song isn't as impressive as some of the other songs she's done. In fact, it's kind of dull, and the lack of accompaniment really does help at all.

12. ピエ・イエズ (Pie Jesu)
Kanon is amazing at pulling off this hymn-like song. The gentle piano plays arpeggios in the background, while Kanon's soft voice weaves through the lyrics beautifully. There's just so much emotion in her voice, and she has such a natural echo to her voice. I love when she sings like this. Absolutely breathtaking.

Overall -
Favourite Track: Calling You, Pie Jesu
Kanon has such a potentially gorgeous voice, and she shows it in this album. The album material isn't particularly interesting, and the accompaniment for a lot of the hymns are dry. When they do decide to put in a gorgeous piano accompaniment, it works. Kanon's performance here is a little bit unrealiable and sometimes she sounds really unsure and tense, but other times, she lets her voice soar so beautifully. Kanon needs to figure out how to stabilize her voice as when she sings at piano, it feels kind of shaky. Nevertheless, underneath some of her shaky performances on this album, she does have a very gorgeous voice and some very gorgeous performances on some tracks. Kanon just has to build her confidence and learn to perform consistently well.

Prólogo

“La ciencia de las artes marciales llamada Escuela Personal de los Dos Cielos es algo que he estado perfeccionando muchos años. Ahora, deseando revelarla en un libro por primera vez, he ascendido al Monte Iwato, en la provincia de Higo, provincia de Kyushu. Inclinándose ante el cielo, venerando a Kanon, me sitúo frente a Buda. Soy Shinmen Musashi no Kami, Fujiwara no Genshin, guerrero nacido en la provincia de Harima, de sesenta años de edad.

He dedicado mi espíritu a la ciencia de las artes marciales desde que era joven, hace mucho tiempo. Tenía trece años cuando tuve mi primer duelo. En aquella ocasión gané a mi adversario, un maestro de artes marciales llamado Arima Kihei... A los dieciséis años vencí a un poderoso maestro de artes marciales llamado Akiyama, de la provincia de Tajima. Cuando tenía veintiuno, me fui a la capital y conocí a maestros de artes marciales de todo el país. Aunque participé en numerosos duelos, nunca dejé de alcanzar la victoria.

Después viajé de provincia en provincia, encontrando maestros de artes marciales de varias escuelas. Aunque participé en más de sesenta duelos, nunca perdí. Todo ello tuvo lugar entre los trece y veintinueve años.

Cuando cumplí los treinta años y reflexioné sobre mis experiencias, me di cuenta que no había salido victorioso a causa del logro consumado de las artes marciales. Quizá fue porque poseía una capacidad intrínseca para esta ciencia y no me había desviado de los principios naturales. También puede haber sido debido a fallos de las artes marciales de las demás escuelas. En cualquier caso, practiqué a continuación día y noche hasta alcanzar un principio todavía más profundo, y espontáneamente llegué a la ciencia de las artes marciales. Tenía cincuenta años en esa época.

Desde entonces he pasado el tiempo sin tener ninguna ciencia en la que investigar. Confiando en la ventaja de la ciencia militar, tal como la he convertido en la ciencia de todas las artes y técnicas, no tengo maestro en ningún camino.”

-De esta manera Musashi comienza la redacción de lo que posteriormente vendría a ser una de las obras literarias mas importantes e influyentes surgido de la cultura japonesa tradicional conocida como “El libro de los Cinco Anillos”, en donde el autor no solo se limita a reflexionar sobre el arte de la guerra, la lucha y la estrategia en el campo de batalla, sino que también su obra abarca incluso los terrenos de la autodisciplina y de la realización personal.

Shinmen Takezo, oriundo de la aldea de Miyamoto que posteriormente adopto el nombre de Miyamoto Musashi, fue uno de los mas celebres y respetados espadachines que haya conocido la cultura japonesa en su totalidad. Musashi fue un personaje histórico, pero gracias a la brillante narrativa del escritor Eiji Yoshikawa, el cual plasmo parte de la vida del legendario guerrero en una extensa novela histórica segmentada publicada originalmente entre los años 1935 y 1939, sus proezas y hazañas trascendieron del mito para introducirse con firmeza dentro del folklore japonés y de esta manera asombrar e inspirar a las nuevas generaciones, que miran con orgullo y respeto a la imponente figura del legendario samurai, cuya figura se evoca como si se tratara de un modelo de virtud y disciplina digno de admiración, superiores a la persona como ente físico que se instala sin mayores variaciones temporales en la actualidad. Su nombre se menciona como si de un concepto se tratase, una forma de vida, un compromiso de rectitud y adoctrinamiento imperecedero, intachable.

Interpretaciones de Musashi a través de la historia

-Pese a el hecho de que Musashi fue un personaje histórico que efectivamente existió y deambuló por el mundo, no existe un real consenso frente a las hazañas que se le atribuyen, esta incertidumbre en todo lo relativo al misterioso guerrero se acentúa aun mas tras su mitificación póstuma, ósea, a su inmortalización dentro del folklore nipón.

De esta manera, dentro de las versiones que actualmente conocemos que nos permiten acercarnos a lo que vendría a ser la vida y obra del legendario samurai, podemos claramente destacar tres grandes fuentes de información:

-El Musashi como personaje histórico, que a trascendido a través del mito y del código verbal para introducirse con fuerza dentro de la concepción tradicional japonesa que tienen los nipones de ellos mismos, además de la multiplicidad de escritos históricos (reseñas y biografías redactadas por sus seguidores o por personas que lo conocieron en vida, de muy dudosa veracidad) que ensalzan sus hazañas y virtudes, atribuyéndole un sinnúmero de características que casi rozan lo sobre humano o lo divino. Por nombrar algún ejemplo, se decía de Musashi que nunca se bañaba para no mostrarte indefenso ni descuidar su guardia. Esta afirmación resulta muy improbable si consideramos que el ronin, que no es más que otra forma de referirse a los samuráis en Japón, era frecuentemente invitado a codearse con la nobleza o su presencia era requerida por altas personalidades políticas y sociales de la época. También durante los tiempos en que Musashi comenzó a labrar su fama, era frecuentemente referido incluso dentro de su misma aldea como un “demonio” motivo de su predisposición a la violencia. Aquel estereotipo le siguió durante casi toda su vida, y en muchas ocasiones se les atribuía a sus sorprendentes habilidades en el esgrima algún componente sobrenatural o demoníaco. Aunque como contraparte también se le conocía con el seudónimo de “Kensei”, que vendría a ser algo así como “la espada divina”. De cualquiera de las dos formas a su soberbia capacidad en el arte de la guerra se le atribuye cierta porción sobrenatural, no siendo más que sus habilidades el producto de una vida dedicada a la autodisciplina y a la permanente búsqueda de la superación personal, que el mismo Musashi llevaba hasta los extremos más insospechados. Si es a algo a lo que se le debe inculcar algún elemento sobrehumano es a su infatigable determinación, que lo llevo a superar todos los obstáculos a los que se debió enfrentar durante su vida, dedicada por completo a la espada y al arte de la guerra. Mientras que otros samuráis, citando el caso de su celebre rival Sasaki Kojiro, llegados a cierto punto y tras alcanzar en múltiples ocasiones la victoria se mostraban conformes con sus habilidades y pecaban de pedantes o engreídos, Musashi jamás cedió ante los halagos o ensalzaciones que se le proferían a sus talentos , sino que por el contrario siempre se considero a si mismo inferior con respecto a otros grandes samuráis que admiraba, e incluso con frecuencia reflexionaba de lo mucho que aun le faltaba para alcanzar el verdadero grado de destreza que requería para adquirir el titulo de maestro en la esgrima, que muchos de sus rivales derrotados con orgullo y satisfacción se jactaban.

-El Musashi como protagonista de una novela, redactada por Eiji Yoshikawa que lleva el mismo nombre del guerrero y fue serializada por segmentos a modo de emular una forma tradicional de escritura japonesa que se asimila bastante al popular genero literario europeo conocido como “novela folletín”, que todos conocemos, o al menos deberíamos conocer.

Yoshikawa, haciendo uso de una notable capacidad argumental, introduce dentro de su novela una gran cantidad de elementos históricos (incluso al mismo se le considera la profesión de historiador por sobre la de escritor) que con paciencia y dedicación durante años se esfuerza en recopilar y rescatar del olvido, sumado a un igualmente importante componente ficticio, eso si trazado en base a suposiciones e hipótesis debido a lo precario e inverosímil de la información que se dispone en los archivos sobre la existencia Musashi, logra redactar una extensa novela histórica en donde imprime una gran parte de la vida y obra del guerrero, sus reflexiones y visión propia de ver el mundo que le caracteriza, así como también resulta como una excelente forma de acercarnos al periodo histórico de transición dentro de la cultura japonesa que debió vivir el samurai. Un siglo plagado de violentas revoluciones, revueltas, frecuentes robos y pillaje, así como de lideres carismáticos que debieron enfrentar el paso desde las tradicionales artes de batalla en base a armas penetrantes y punzantes, a la introducción del fusil y las armas de fuego en la isla, que cambio completamente el modo de concebir a la guerra que se tenia en aquel entonces.

Resulta en este punto muy importante el considerar la gran importancia que se le otorgaba en Japón a las tradiciones, sobre todo en lo relativo al tema de la honra y el deshonor, tanto así que la vergüenza era motivo de inmediata reivindicación, o en el caso contrario, de suicidio (característica de esta particular forma de concebir la honra es el famoso ritual seppuku, tan vilipendiado por la cultura occidental). También es digno de mención la notoria importancia que se la embutía a la practica religiosa en Japón, incluso el mismo Musashi era un ferviente creyente y seguidor de las enseñanzas del Dios (Kami en el original) Kanon y Buda.

Supongo que no será necesario explayarme mas en este aspecto, mas que el considerar lo importante del contexto del periodo histórico que debió vivir Musashi, ósea, el final de la época de los samurai.

Retomando a la novela original, Yoshikawa introduce dentro de su obra una gran cantidad de personajes y sucesos de dudosa procedencia histórica, pero que a la vez resultan sumamente interesantes como experiencia literaria para el lector. De este grupo, sin duda el más sobresaliente de todos es el igualmente popular y formidable rival del Musashi, Sasaki Kojiro, quien también era conocido con el seudónimo de Ganryu. Era un joven sumamente talentoso, que a diferencia del protagonista había adquirido sus habilidades no debido a una regia disciplina o incuestionable predisposición a la hora de entrenar el cuerpo y la mente, sino que por el contrario su genialidad fue nata, ósea, de nacimiento. Se decía del joven samurai que su fortaleza jamás seria alcanzado por los hombres en combate, e incluso en vida su popularidad y reconocimiento fueron soberbios, muy por encima de los del mismo Musashi, que ostentaba una incipiente e injustificada fama de rastrero, vagabundo y cobarde, ensalzada por una de sus mas acérrimos enemigos, como el mismo Yoshikawa, posiblemente haciendo uso de su interminable imaginación señala. En contradicción al incuestionable renombre de Ganryu, sobre su real participación histórica se ciñen profundas dudas, ya que pese al reconocimiento popular y a los diversos escritos que mencionan su nombre, su más grande enemigo, el propio Musashi, en su famosa obra literaria no hace referencia jamás al nombre del guerrero. Esta afirmación pone en duda la existencia del legendario espadachín maestro del Tsubame-Gaeshi, que traducido seria “El vuelo de la golondrina” debido a que para masterizar este singular corte práctico esgrimiendo su enorme espada “Palo de secar” derribando a una gran cantidad de este tipo particular de aves en pleno vuelo.

Aun así en conciencia del importante componente ficticio de las obras de Eiji Yoshikawa, los novelas “Musashi” son fundamentales para acercarnos a la vida del guerrero, gozando estas de aceptación generalizada y muy rara vez cuestionada por la rígida mentalidad cultural nipona.

-La excepción a la regla se encuentra en la concepción de Musashi como personaje de un manga, compartiendo el protagonismo esta vez con su archirival Sasaki Kojiro, gozando este de un arco argumental original propio de extensión considerable.

-AF/Note: Al referirnos a “arco” o “ruta” argumental hacemos alusión a lo que en las series de televisión vendrían a ser las “temporadas”, ósea, segmentos o cortes temporales que separan la linealidad de la animación referida. En el caso puntual del anime, se dan frecuentemente acompañados de cambios o variaciones en los “openings” y “endings” (las canciones que dan comienzo y concluyen el capitulo), mientras que en los mangas estas alteraciones son relativamente mas complicadas de diferenciar. Por regla general, los arcos corresponden a determinados sucesos puntuales que se dan en la historia, referidos ya sea a un personaje o lugar puntual (por ejemplo, en One Piece nos referimos al arco o temporada de “Triller Bark” cuando nuestros protagonistas se encuentran en aquel lugar, mientras que en el manga de Vagabond, al hablar del arco de Kojiro, consideramos todos los sucesos relativos a la introducción del personaje y a su desenvolvimiento en la historia principal hasta que los acontecimientos del manga vuelven a cambiar de protagonista). Hablamos de ruta mas que nada al referirnos a las novelas visuales y sus conversiones a mangas y animes (En el caso de Fate Stay Night, la ruta predominante por la que opta el anime corresponde a la de Saber, existiendo otras dos rutas en la novela original parcialmente ignoradas en la versión animada).

“Vagabond”, como se denomina el manga referido, nos narra las aventuras de un joven Musashi desde el momento en que recién comienza su jornada épica en la batalla de Sekigahara, en donde los ejércitos de Tokugawa Ieyasu e Ishida Mitsunari se enfrentaron por la sucesión al trono como Shogun de Japón. De esta manera, Takezo y su amigo de la infancia Matahachi se unen a las filas de Mitsunari para luchar contra las tropas de Tokugawa (sobre este periodo histórico en particular se hace mucha referencia en tanto el manga como el anime de Rorouni Kenshin, también conocido en Hispanoamérica como “Samurai X”. Para mas información sobre este acontecimiento bélico visita el siguiente link). Ambos jóvenes sobrevivieron a tres días de de terribles combates durante los cuales murieron mas de setenta mil personas, y a la posterior caza y matanza del ejercito derrotado.

Tras esta experiencia, el aun Shinmen Takezo se separa de su compañero, y tras una funesta visita a su pueblo natal, en donde es despreciado como samurai fugitivo e incluso atado a un nogal durante varios días, el joven cambia su nombre a Miyamoto Musashi, en honor a una aldea en donde todos le aborrecían, y así, guiado por el excéntrico monje Takuan Sōhō, comienza un largo viaje en pos de alcanzar la superación personal y de labrarse un nombre para ser reconocido por todos, pero con el tiempo sus prioridades y objetivos cambian, adaptándose a su desarrollo como guerrero. De esta forma, y genialmente trazado por la mano del brillante mangaka (clasificación que se le da a las personas que dibujan mangas), se puede distinguir claramente durante el transcurso de la obra una evolución en la psiquis del personaje, desde sus violentos comienzos hasta ya convertirse en un hombre enteramente dedicado a la disciplina del arte de la guerra.

De la misma manera que sucede con Musashi, Inoue cambia radicalmente con todas las preconcepciones establecidas sobre la vida y obra del legendario rival del samurai, introduciendo de esta manera un arco completamente original que narra los comienzos de la vida de igualmente celebre Sasaki Kojiro, con la sorprendente innovación de atribuirle la condición de imposibilitado auditivo, incapaz de escuchar sonido alguno, buscando explicar de esta manera la gran cantidad de versiones que existen sobre las hazañas de este joven guerrero.

En este arco introduce a personajes que en la novela original de Yoshikawa se mencionan pero que jamás hacen acto de presencia física, como seria la figura del renombrado espadachín Itō Ittōsai y de su maestro Kanemaki Jisai, conocido creador del estilo Chujo-Ryu que a la vez es la persona que cría e instruye a Kojiro en las artes marciales.

-Sobre las diferencias existentes entre el manga, la novela y los acontecimientos históricos, resulta de considerable importancia el considerar que Inoue al imprimir sus reflexiones particulares sobre la vida de ambos guerreros, lo hace basándose primordialmente en la novela de Yoshikawa sobre los sucesos recopilados por historiadores sobre aquella época. Pero aun así, el mangaka con frecuencia introduce en Vagabond bruscos cambios arguméntales se contraponen completamente al planteamiento original de las novelas. Sin duda el cambio mas significativo corresponde a las interpretaciones del dibujante sobre todo lo relativo a la figura de Ganryu, pero hay otros aspectos, como por ejemplo la forma en que se da la famosa batalla del la colina de Ichijoji, en donde Musashi combate contra las furibundas hordas de la escuela Yoshioka que buscan venganza tras las vergonzosas derrotas de sus lideres, los hermanos Seijuro y Denshichiro. Sobre estos dos, también es importante aclarar que sus roles se encuentran cambiados en la conversión existente entre manga y novela, ósea, mientras que en la novela histórica es Denshichiro, el hermano menor, el mas fuerte pero a la vez mas indisciplinado y lisonjero de los dos, en el manga corresponden a Seijuro estas características, siendo esta vez el hermano menor mucho mas puntual en los entrenamientos, pero a la vez encontrándose muy por debajo de las sorprendentes habilidades de su consanguíneo. Fuera de las variaciones ya mencionadas, existen una multiplicidad de otros significativos cambios que alteran sustancialmente la interpretación centenaria que hace el aclamado escritor-historiador sobre el personaje referido, no necesarios de mención.

-Para concluir con este extenso artículo, quizás al lector le resultara interesante descubrir la fuerte influencia que han ejercido estos dos personajes históricos tanto en la cultura nipona, haciendo exclusiva mención al campo de los video-juegos, mangas y animaciones varias.

Quizás una de las referencias mas explicitas a la figura de Musashi se encuentre reflejada en el popular video juego de peleas Samurai Shodown, también conocido como Samurai Spirit, en donde el protagonista, Haohmaru, es una copia exacta del legendario espadachín, a la vez que otro personaje Ukyo, es sospechosamente similar a Ganryu, si tomamos en cuenta las consideraciones que se barajan sobre el físico y habilidades en la esgrima de Kojiro. Otra mención ya mas oficial es encontrable en los video juegos Musashi: Samurai Legend y en la novela visual de Type- Moon Fate Stay Night, en donde Ganryu hace aparición como uno de los héroes resucitados por el santo grial para participar en la batalla por su adquisición. Eso si en este caso puntual se reflexiona sobre su carácter de personaje ficticio y su reconocido movimiento, el Tsubame-Gaeshi, es catalogado como un corte perfecto que roza lo inhumano.

Ya inmersos en los ámbitos del manga anime sus menciones abundan, de hecho, es incluso raro encontrar una historia de samuráis que o se encuentra ambientada en el periodo de Musashi, o recibe referencia en el uso de la espada característico del guerrero (incuestionable creador del estilo a dos espadas), sumado a un importante aporte intelectual, fácilmente reflejable en el modo particular del samurai de ver el mundo y su famosa aseveración de considerar a la espada como una extensión del cuerpo, frase por lo demás llevada al limite por el legendario espadachín. Obras de esta índole abundan, por no mencionar otras, se destacan Rorouni Kenshin, Yaiba (en donde incluso Musashi y Kojiro tienen un rol protagónico), Peace Maker Kurogane y en tantas otras obras similares.

Otra referencia ya mas abstracta se da en la reciente serie de televisión norteamericana “Héroes”, en donde uno de los protagonistas, Hiro, es un ferviente admirador de las hazañas del samurai “Takezo Kensei” (no es necesario profundizar en la similitud referencial al personaje analizado, supongo), tanto así que incluso en la segunda temporada del popular programa se encuentra cara a cara con el afamado samurai, aunque el resultado final no es el esperado.

En fin, las referencias encontrables tanto a Musashi como a su rival Kojiro son innumerables.

-Se deduce tras experimentar y conocer de las increíbles hazañas realizadas por el legendario samurai una justificada importancia e influencia cultural, al cultivador del milenario arte marcial Bushido, maestro del estilo a dos espadas, invencible en combate, características que conforman la singular figura de sin duda uno de los guerreros mas hábiles y respetados de todos los tiempos.

Małgorzata Jarząb: Teraz chciałabym zapytać: jak się odnajduje kobieta w kulturze? Tradycyjna antropologia rozdziela sferę kultury od sfery natury, przypisując tą pierwszą mężczyznom, zaś drugą pozostawiając kobietom. Fakt, iż jest tak mało twórczyń miałby więc wynikać z samej istoty kobiecości. Równocześnie kobiety-twórczynie często się spotykają z różnego rodzaju trudnościami. Być może istnieje „szklany dach”, który nie dopuszcza ich do większej popularności? Często ich twórczość skazana jest na zaetykietowanie w stylu „literatura menstruacyjna”. Mimo zmian, jakie zachodzą w naszym społeczeństwie, sytuacja twórczyni wciąż jest trudna.

Agnieszka Kłos: Trudność wynika z przyzwyczajenia się do wygód i do bezkonkurencyjności. Mężczyźni żyli przez bardzo długi czas w takiej sytuacji, więc dziś trudno jest im oddać część pola kobietom czy zauważyć w nich realnego rywala, jak również przyznać, że czasami muszą przegrać w rynkowej czy społecznej konkurencji. Pozycja kobiety bardzo często jest efektem takiego patrzenia; to jest Obcy, który chce wkroczyć na teren zarezerwowany tylko dla nas, teren elitarny.
Pracowałam przez bardzo wiele lat w działach kultury redakcji wrocławskich i warszawskich. Między innymi w gazecie, która szczyci się mianem największego dziennika intelektualistów Europy Środkowowschodniej. Ta gazeta rządzi się prawami zdrowo pojętego feminizmu. Jest to jedyne znane mi miejsce w Polsce, gdzie w pracy, w przestrzeni publicznej, są bidety czy automaty z podpaskami. Większość szefów to kobiety, a spora liczba tematów, które wchodzą na czołówkę czy w ogóle do gazety, to tematy z obszaru feminizmu i ruchów wolnościowych. Szefem działu, w którym pracowałam, była również kobieta. Ona pewnego dnia odchodzi, zaś jej miejsce zajmuje szef. Wchodzi więc na pierwszą wizytę do naszego pokoju i widząc przy biurku dziennikarki i redaktorki, mówi: „Ale tu kurnik. Trzeba będzie część tych kur zwolnić.” Ta gazeta szczyci się mianem opiniotwórczej, rola dziennikarza ma się tam sprowadzać do niesienia kaganka oświaty. Wydawało mi się, że w czasach, w których żyjemy, pewne standardy wynikłe z etapów równouprawnienia mamy już za sobą. Tymczasem przychodzi szef, który podlega strukturze organizacji tej gazety i mówi coś niedopuszczalnego w miejscu publicznym.

Inny przykład. Miałam osobiste spotkanie z szefem tej gazety w Warszawie. Wybitny intelektualista, bardzo ceniony w Europie. Myślałam, że jak do niego pójdę, to pogadamy sobie na równych prawach. Przeszłam wtedy przez kanały powstańcze jako jedyna kobieta i jedyny cywil. Chciałam się z nim tym doświadczeniem podzielić. Siedzimy, gadamy i on mówi w pewnej chwili: „O, to masz rzeczywiście niesamowite doświadczenie, masz świetne wykształcenie, jesteś współczesnym Leonardo da Vinci”. Po czym dodał: „Wiesz co, twój mąż będzie miał się z tobą dobrze.” Cała moja wiara w to, że to jest człowiek nadążający za pewną transgresją intelektualną, że można z nim pogadać na równych zasadach, okazała się mrzonką. Bo zastałam w gabinecie faceta w najbardziej stereotypowym sensie, który ma w głowie XIX wiek, cały intelektualny bełkot, w którym kobieta jest tylko subtelnym kwiatem wczepionym w butonierkę.
Te doświadczenia pokazały mi dokładnie, gdzie ja się znajduję w polu kultury oficjalnej. Dlatego zostałam freelancerem. Podjęłam może osobistą straceńczą walkę, ale żyje mi się teraz lepiej. Przynajmniej nie czuję nad sobą szklanego sufitu.

Małgorzata Maciejewska: Nikt cię nie usadza na tak zwanym twoim właściwym miejscu.
Ania Zawadzka przyjechała do nas kiedyś na wykład i opowiadała, jak podczas zebrania redakcyjnego rozmawiali nad nowym tytułem. Ona chyba była w coś zaangażowana i chciała o tym powiedzieć, a nagle kolega się do niej zwraca i mówi: „Ale ty dzisiaj pięknie wyglądasz”. To była taka sytuacja szoku, że nie wiedziała co odpowiedzieć.

Marcin Boronowski: Powinna odpowiedzieć: a ty wyglądasz silnie.

MM: Mogła tak odpowiedzieć. Ale ona wiedziała, że ten facet nie zrobił tego świadomie, żeby wtłoczyć ją w jakąś rolę. To była nieświadoma praktyka powołująca płeć.

MB: On chciał zrobić dobrze.

MM: Tak, a dla niej to było najgorsze, co mógł zrobić w tej sytuacji, kiedy ona chce się wykazać swoim intelektem i argumentami.

MJ: Chyba czasami mamy do czynienia z takim bezmyślnym powielaniem schematów przez mężczyzn, którzy wcale nie są antyfeministami. Kiedy jeden z moich redakcyjnych kolegów zapraszał nas na koncert pewnej piosenkarki, sformułował to następująco: „Zapraszam was na koncert młodej, ślicznej i utalentowanej artystki”. Wydaje mi się, że to strasznie częsta praktyka, zupełnie nieuświadomiona, bo przecież zapraszając na koncert mężczyzny nie zacząłby od podkreślenia, iż jest to artysta przystojny i przeuroczy.

AK: To zdradza pewien kompleks i niedopasowanie społeczne. Kobieta wyposażona, tak jak mężczyzna, w intelekt, budzi przerażenie. Jest to przerażenie na widok Obcego, który podszywa się pod faceta. Przeciętny mężczyzna zwyczajnie sobie z tym nie radzi, dlatego zaczyna od takiego seksistowskiego wstępu, który ma tę osobę osłabić, podważyć jej realną wartość. Tak dzieje się w przypadku pięknych kobiet, które "na dodatek" mają talent. Ich talent rozpatrywany jest w kategoriach dodatku, który łatwo można spacyfikować.

MB: Czytając ostatnio parę esejów, spotkałem się z takim stwierdzeniem, że pod adresem artystek kierowane są specyficzne oczekiwania: żeby ich prace np. plastyczne miały charakter bardziej dekoracyjny, milutki dla oka, a nie żeby podejmowały jakieś drastyczne sprawy społeczne, czy żeby za pomocą brzydoty czy szokujących zestawień prezentowały jakieś poglądy kontrowersyjne. Tak jest?

MM: Na pewno. Dziś twórczynie podejmują takie tematy jak, co jest charakterystyczne dla współczesnej sztuki feministycznej, obrazowanie fekaliów. To nie jest bezmyślne wykorzystywanie szokujących elementów, ale przemyślana strategia polityczna, która pokazuje, kim ja właściwie jestem w tej kulturze, czyli że jestem pewnego rodzaju wykluczeńcem, odpadem, odchodem, elementem wyrzucanym z tożsamości zbiorowej.

AK: W swoim życiu przekraczam sferę słowa i obrazu i mam doświadczenia związane z obydwoma środowiskami artystycznymi. Środowisko "sztuk wizualnych" jest o wiele bardziej przychylne kobietom. Może akademie w Polsce uczą znacznie bardziej feministycznego podejścia do fachu albo te kobiety mają taką moc, jest ich tak dużo, że jednak zmiękczają męską strukturę. Natomiast jeśli chodzi o tak zwane "sztuki słowa pisanego”... takich szowinistów nigdzie i nigdy nie spotkałam. Zwłaszcza poeci charakteryzują się taką specyficzną postawą wobec kobiet. Nie wypada mi nawet zacytować pewnych anegdot czy też określeń, które padają w ich kręgu pod adresem dziewczyn, które pewnego dnia zaczynają pisać wiersze.

MB: Po prostu oni potrzebują kobiety jako tego kwiatu, który się opiewa, ewentualnie jako muzy, która będzie poetę nastrajać do pisania wiersza a nie jako konkurencyjnej poetki i równorzędnego intelektualnego partnera. Od tego są kumple, z którymi poeta idzie na piwo, czy raczej na wódkę.

MM: To chyba też jest specyfika gałęzi sztuki. Język jest silnie zmaskulinizowany. Poprzez język silnie odtwarzają się podziały płciowe. Więc tutaj ta pozycja mężczyzn jest jak najmocniej broniona. Sztuki wizualne są w pewnym sensie bardziej niszowe niż poezja i proza, trzeba je oglądać w specyficznych miejscach, nie można pójść do biblioteki i ich wypożyczyć. Obraz, szczególnie sztuki alternatywnej, jest też mniej zrozumiały, bardziej zaowalowany.

MJ: Nie ma rodzaju gramatycznego.

AK: Poza tym bardzo często obraz występuje bez kontekstu, bez podpisu. Nie jesteśmy więc w stanie odgadnąć płci autora. Natomiast w wypadku książki zdradzi to nam od razu rodzaj gramatyczny czy imię i nazwisko.

MB: Czyli piszcie panie pod pseudonimami.

MM: Tak robiły właśnie pierwsze pisarki science-fiction czy fantasy, one nie weszłyby do tego męskiego środowiska, gdyby nie przyjmowały męskich pseudonimów.

AK: Swego czasu zarabiałam wygrywając konkursy literackie i żyłam z tych pieniędzy. Pomyślałam, że jurorami takich konkursów, w których można wygrać grubą forsę, są faceci, wobec czego warto przybrać męską ksywkę. Jako Jakub Piękny wygrywałam duże konkursy literackie w Polsce. Jakież było zdziwienie szacownego grona, kiedy po nagrodę przyjeżdżała niewielkiego wzrostu i młoda dziewczyna. Ta konkursowa proza nie zapowiadała kogoś takiego.

MB: Piękna tak, ale nie Jakub. Ja mam krótką pamięć do nazwisk, ale w okresie międzywojennym była taka pani która publikowała jako pan, a potem okazała się transseksualistą. Może to jest dobry chwyt: wejście jako piąta kolumna, pod przebraniem. Potem dopiero zrzucamy maski i pokazujemy, kim naprawdę jesteśmy i zostajemy już w tej sferze.

MM: Jest to jakiś kanał, możliwość wyjścia. Tylko ja się zastanawiam: dlaczego my musimy to robić? Dlaczego musimy tą maskę przywdziewać, dlaczego mamy się kamuflować a nie otwarcie manifestować to, kim jesteśmy?

AK: Najgorsze jest to, że tak naprawdę dyskryminacja uderza w podstawę naszego życia. Tu nie chodzi już tylko o godność. Ja robiłam to, żeby zarobić na chleb. Dlatego myślę, że dyskryminacja bardzo silnie uderza w kobiety, bo pozbawia je zwyczajnie środków do życia. Wtedy to już nie są zabawy akademickie czy gadanie o ornamentach w sztuce, tylko zwyczajna harówka w poszukiwaniu chleba. Jeżeli realnie na rynku pracy zarabiam mniej, albo nie jestem zatrudniana tylko dlatego, że jestem kobietą, to zaczyna się robić groźnie.
Wydaje mi się, że to jest najtwardsze i najgorsze w kulturze, jeśli mówimy o dyskryminacji: ona bezpośrednio uderza w ekonomię kobiety. Wiem, ile zarabiają moi koledzy w tym samym zawodzie, jakie obowiązują stawki na rynku. Ja tych stawek nigdy nie osiągnę. W rozmowie kwalifikacyjnej, kiedy staramy się o jakieś stanowisko, zawsze podane są idealne cechy kandydata, nigdy kandydatki. Z góry wiem, że idąc tam, raczej wyniosę rozczarowanie. Nikt nie powie: świetnie, wykształcona i na dodatek kobieta, być może to poszerzy horyzonty w naszej firmie.

MJ: Może w takim razie potrzeba jakiś rozwiązań systemowych? Może, wracając do literatury, moglibyśmy zacząć od kanonu? Powinniśmy go zmieniać?

AK: Przykładem takiego odwrócenia porządku i takiej sprawy wywrotowej jest na pewno przypadek Doroty Masłowskiej. To jest szczególny i dziwny przypadek, ponieważ mamy tutaj
