So a whole bunch of people, including "Water Police, a naval patrol boat, local volunteers, ships owned by resource giants Woodside and Santos and police and private planes" go out, and they don't find the boat. By this point, the two fuckheads involved are probably laughing their asses off or passed out.

After all these people have been out looking for some people in serious trouble for seven fucking hours, they call off the search, and start tracing where the call came from and who had made it.

They found the two kids who'd wasted the time and efforts of a whole lot of people who could have been responding to actual emergencies, and charged them. They were "convicted in April of creating a false belief regarding human safety and each was sentenced to a 12-month intensive supervision order and 200 hours of community service. The two knucklefuckers were also ordered to pay $43,980.69 each, which means they got off awfully cheap considering the search is estimated to have cost over $200,000.

They should be grateful.

I'm surprised. I thought that Wolf and Crush would be the winners, maybe because they are my favorites. Why does Hurricane have so many votes? Have I missed something about him? I had no idea he was so popular. Can someone give me some info on this? I'm really curious.

I looked it up in several online dictionaries.  Here are some of the definitions:

I also looked up the definitions for freedom:

Okay, so the United States is an independent and free country.  As a country, we are not under the control of another.  But, what about it's citizens?  Are we really free and independent?  Maybe we've got it better than some countries.  I don't deny that.  But does that really make us free?

When a same-sex couple can hold hands walking down the street without fear of physical, verbal, or sexual violence...

When two men or two women can receive the same benefits as a man and a woman, including the right to marry, raise children, make end-of-life decisions...

When men and women are treated equally...

When transgendered people are not viewed as freaks...

When violence against anyone is taken seriously, regardless of the victims gender or sexual orientation or where they were or what they were doing when the attack happened...

When we can truly walk down the streets being ourselves, without fear...

Maybe then we'll be free.

When boys can play with Barbie and girls can play with trucks...

When a person can practice the religion of their choice (or no religion at all) without judgment...

When a black man and a white man can walk into a store and be treated the same way...

When all children have access to healthcare...

When homeless people have a place to live...

When minimum wage is enough to actually live on...

Maybe then, we'll be free.

Brisbane’s Catholic Justice and Peace Commission and the Centre for Multicultural Pastoral Care have invited US Jesuit film-maker, Fr Mark McGregor, to show his film of young Latin Americans seeking asylum in the USA.

The film, titled Posada, reminds Christians of the biblical notion of welcoming the stranger in our midst.

Fr McGregor will show his film and lead a discussion on its implications in the Australian context in Lecture Theatre GT 125, St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, Spring Hill, on Thursday 31 July at 7.00 p.m.

The Commission’s Executive Officer, Peter Arndt said that the screening provided the Church in Brisbane with an opportunity to reflect on its commitment to compassionate treatment of asylum seekers.

“In recent years, many Catholics were involved in efforts to help young, unaccompanied minors like those in Fr McGregor’s film.” Mr Arndt said.

“It is important that we do this if we are to stay true to the fundamental biblical notion of welcoming the stranger,” he said.

“I am sure we will see a lot of parallels between the stories of asylum seekers in Brisbane and those of the young people in Fr McGregor’s film,” he said.

“’Posada’ means ‘shelter’ and it is the name of a nine-day Mexican Advent festival which re-enacts Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter in Bethlehem,” he said.

“It is also most appropriate that we have Fr McGregor with us on the Feast of St Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, who are called to carry out the mission of the Church on the margins of society,” he said.

The screening and discussion will be followed by supper and a gold coin donation is requested to cover the costs of the event.

You see, I realized that there was another side to life. People and countries have very different stories from mine: stories of poverty, injustices, and war. I realized that for most of my life, up until living in Africa, that only one reality was true to me. But, now that I've traveled more, especially to South Africa and Rwanda, a curtain has been pulled back revealing another reality. It's a reality that can be quite ugly, and one that you could run from and choose not to deal with if you had that luxury. But the true reality is that it really wouldn't go away. So, one must embrace both. For both are true, no getting around it. It's just the way it is. We live in a time where both good and evil exist; where joy and suffering are both experienced. Sometimes these two realities seem so are far apart, yet I think they are often separated by just a thin curtain.

As you can see, I've been thinking a lot lately and processing all this: all the joy and suffering, and my faith in God. What's the correlation? How am I to respond? What does God think? What did Jesus have to say about this stuff? How much suffering will He allow? Why does He allow others to be so blessed and not experience pain? Why are some all too familiar with one side of the curtain and not the other?

These are some of my questions. Maybe I'm not asking the right ones. Maybe there is even more for me to see. Maybe there is another curtain that needs to pulled back, and then I'll have greater clarity. I just want the truth. I don't want to be in the dark anymore; behind the curtain. I want to know both sides of life, see all sides of the story, and get a bigger, deeper picture of reality. One thing I've decided to do is not run from the ugly realities or the dark parts of our world and lives. I choose to embrace it, to engage it, and yes!, even fight it.

Given that AG McDonnell failed to support Del. Bob Marshall's lawsuit against unconstitutional taxation, one has to wonder. What is the rationale for advancing Mims here? Solely politics? After all, the Virginia Supreme Court sided with Marshall by a score of 7-0. Shouldn't that perplex McDonnell? Surely he received advice from his deputy AG, Bill Mims, concerning which side he should choose in this lawsuit. He didn't choose correctly. Del. Bob Marshall's popularity at the last convention may also explain why AG McDonnell does not want a convention the next time around--or so rumor has it.

AG McDonnell can be a uniter but he's going to need to shore up the conservative base if he wants to excite the crowds. Compare what the Democrats have done. To wit, Sen. Jim Webb (who endorsed Allen in 2000) is avidly pro-gun and ran campaign ads showing that Ronald Reagan supported him. To boot, Webb is a former Reagan administration offical! How is it that Webb comes out sounding more conservative here?

There's only one explanation: McDonnell is trying to out Democrat the Democrats and it ain't gonna work. McDonnell needs to butch up and start spouting some of those conservative credentials. Or, as the Richmond Times-Dispatch seems to allude, maybe he ought to just sit tight and run again for AG. If he does, Ken Cucinnelli may not be too happy.

In a interview with L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, judge Gianluigi Marrone said that the man claimed he was a priest, but did not say when the incident took place.

He added that the man was tried by a Vatican tribunal, but would not reveal the verdict or any punishment.

"He was caught by surprise in the basilica while he was trying to take his place in a confessional.”

"He was wearing clerical garb, but the expert eye of our personnel didn't need much to sense something strange in his behaviour."

Though the documents and Vatican pass appeared legitimate, checks with Italian authorities "unmasked him" as having posed as a priest before in Italy, Judge Marrone said.

"It was a case of usurping an ecclesiastical title, and thus he was tried by our tribunal."

Much of the tribunal’s work involved petty thefts of Vatican visitors' wallets, said the judge.

Marty Haugen, the liturgical musician, tells the story of how, months after the terrible attacks of September 11, 2001, he continued his travels around the country doing concerts and workshops and saw all the billboards and signs that said in big bold letters, “GOD BLESS AMERCIA.” He said that when he saw these signs that he thought it always looked like a command rather than a prayer – a command for God to bless America. Then, he said, one day, on his travels, he saw another billboard, with the same bold type, that said “AMERICA BLESS GOD.” That one, he said, seemed to make more sense to him.

The message of Marty’s story echoes in the readings this Independence Day weekend, as we give thanks to God for the many gifts and goodness of our land, and the freedom we enjoy, but also are aware of its challenges and troubles. The prophecy, from the book of Zechariah, is of the king-savior of Israel coming into the great city of Jerusalem, not on a warrior horse of triumph, but a simple donkey, a beast of burden, proclaiming peace. It is an image not only meant for a distant future, but a hope for the present that this prophet had. It was his hope that his beloved land could put its history of wars, exile, and suffering behind it, and bring forth a leader who would be humble, wise, and peace-filled. (Apparently, such leaders were as hard to find then as they are now!) Yet I don’t think the prophet who penned these words in Zechariah’s name wanted only that. I think the point of this prophesy is much deeper.

Looking right before this passage in the book of Zechariah, we find an oracle against all the other nations around Israel and the way they had been or would be destroyed. (Some scholars think this is the prophet’s way of recounting the result of Alexander the Great’s conquests.) In the midst of that tale of woe, comes this passage, full of hope and promise -- but the contrast is clear. It is a message spoken by Y_HW_H from the beginning, from the time of the covenant on Sinai, and repeated throughout the Scriptures: You have a choice – life or death, community or chaos, peace or violence. And you know that the ones who choose violence only find destruction and emptiness. You don’t have to be like Alexander the Great. Live in the ways of peace, be ruled by peace, seek after justice, and God can gather you together as a people once again.

It is always God’s desire to bring forth peace and reconciliation, justice and healing, though, as we all know, it is no easy task. We know the fate of Jesus. We know the fate of those who participate in the struggle for justice in society in various ways, and we know the sacrifice that is involved. And we have learned that it is truly God that has given us the strength to hold fast to the truth. Because if God’s will truly is for justice, it will find its completion, as it did for Jesus; as God has promised will happen for us. Nevertheless, we must choose that path if it is to truly find a home in our heart -- and in our nation and world.

All the other readings are examples of what our lives and our world can be like if we embrace that promise of God. It seems that when we make a conscious choice, deep in our hearts, to think, act, and pray peace, we come to understand the graciousness of God. like the psalmist. We come to understand the power of the Spirit to heal all that is not of that Spirit in our lives. We are spiritually “fortified” to stand firm in the promises of God, even when it seems the struggle is failing, or even lost.

Paul uses the images of spirit and flesh in contrast in the second reading, not because they are opposed in themselves, but because he knows that we can, and usually do, operate out of mixed motives. (Remember his own story, and that of Peter, from last weekend!) He knows it takes a great deal of integrity to clarify in our own lives how we are to live in a complex and difficult world. The truth we are to live is not always unambiguous. It is interesting that is precisely on this point that many of our brothers and sisters who view the world in very absolutist terms appeal to a form of absolutist religion to fend off any moral ambiguities. That certainly wasn’t the view of Paul.

Finally, in the Gospel from Matthew, we who are well-educated and have been blessed with great opportunities to learn, and get advanced degrees and good careers, are often scandalized if we really hear Jesus’ words, not as a pious platitude, but as reality. “Father, you have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to little ones.” Like the evangelist, who will remind us in chapter 25 that serving the “little ones,” the “least ones” is serving Christ, Jesus’ teaching reminds us here that those who are most easily victimized by the machinations of the mighty hear all that he has said and done – and they get it. And they rejoice. Others (i.e. us) might get it eventually, but only if we are willing to struggle in the midst of our daily ambiguities and find the spiritual center that will keep us stable in the pursuit of peace, justice, mercy and reconciliation in a society that always seems to want to distract us. (Who was it who said that we in the United States have the most freedom and are the least free?)

So, as we celebrate our nation’s independence this weekend, let us pray that we can take upon our shoulders the gentle yoke of Christ, who also lived in an ambiguous time – between faith and politics, religion and Empire. Let us pray that we might know God’s promise of peace more fully: in our hearts, often broken in the pains we bear ourselves and feel with others; in our families, where old wounds keep people apart or where abuse and violence have crushed spirits and bodies; in our workplaces, when doing the right thing can sometimes cost friendships or job security; in our nation, which we hope and pray remembers that our freedom is freedom for service and not just freedom from coercion.

God … bless America … please. Amen.

Speaking of Marty Haugen, here is a piece called “Stand Firm,” an alternative litany of saints and witnesses all of whom lived God’s promise of peace and justice fully in their lives.

The mental and physical torment to which he has been put has dealt him a mortal wound.  All he knows is that many years ago a frozen hearted miscreant mistakenly mislabeled him which has resulted in his life has been taken from him but now that the truth has come to light those who helped to deal the death blow refuses to accept responsibility for the part they have played in his undoing. He acknowledges that he has given up on everything in this life for there is nothing left that is worthwhile striving for. 

I know that this is the result of all the years of psychological conditioning which he has been put through, much as Dr. Pavlov’s dogs.  He is certain that although he possesses the knowledge which would allow him to succeed for him to suddenly start believing that he will suddenly be allowed to succeed is nothing more than just another illusion, a belief which has repeatedly been reinforced with all past attempts.  While those in the upper echelons of the system which has done this to him would like nothing more than for him to forget what was done to him, to move on with his life and believe in their promises of no more interference with his future endeavors he knows that such promises are nothing more than more of the same old rhetoric.  Thus far, all the words have been belied by their actions and so now it is to their actions, rather than their words that he now looks toward as litmus of the veracity of the words which heretofore have been meaningless.

Most of what is being done today is an attempt to force a change in the types of thoughts he has and in the way he thinks however, after so many years of being forced to think in the way he does it is a quixotic task.  He strongly believes, as do I that thought, all thought, is relevant and is pertinent to creativity and individuality.  Persecuting a person for what they think rather than for inappropriate actions/behavior is anathema to what makes each of us unique and leads to nothing more than what is referred to as ‘stepford wiving’ (referring to a novel about a town whose men, all sexists, used a form of hypnotic mind control to reprogram their wives to become and act in a manner that they believed to be the way a perfect wife/woman should act and think).

One thing of which he is certain is that justice is the foundation for all else and as long as there is no justice there will never be anything else.  At this point in his life he has no care for anything, other than waiting for God to fulfill the promises of justice recently made to him there is nothing in this life he wants, needs or even cares about.  He does what he can to assist others in need asking nothing in return but he knows there is nothing he can do for himself.  It is now up to God and so he waits, as do I.  I know his pain and am able to empathize.  His ordeal reminds me of another person I heard being interviewed many years earlier, I believe her name was Marilyn Chambers.  During her interview she alluded to being hypnotized and brainwashed into doing the things she never considered herself capable of doing (even becoming a porn actress) and it was not until she came to understand what it was that had been done to her that she was able to break free.  Her being able to break free is a demonstration of the veracity and wisdom contained in scripture for we are told: “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If you continue in my word, then you are my disciples indeed; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31-32.  [Many people misquote this passage as saying ‘if you speak the truth you will be set free’ which to my understanding is where some of the steps of the twelve step program come (for those of you who are familiar with that program.)]

Today, instead of making repairs for the damage that has been done he is given the usual useless promises which he knows will never come to pass.  Some of the people which had initiated the spreading of the lies about him now want all the networks/organizations which took part in blacklisting him to believe that the system they have taken part in works to create a better world but they do this by refusing to admit that what was done to Patrick was a mistake because if the truth of their deceits came to light the entire system would be shown to be nothing more than a farce used to further the racist and sexist agenda of those who had used the system to instigate the abuses against him.

There are those who have asked Pat to not speak of the things he has been through and instead to allow them to continue lying to all the other networks/organizations that had participated in blacklisting him and act like the conditioning he had been through worked to “cure” him they would compensate him.  But allowing the lie to continue and doing what they want would mean he would have to give up on his real dream so he refused.  Now this underground social network considers him to be someone wanting to bring down the system they have worked so hard to create.  Of course this is not what he wants for Pandora’ Box has already been opened and such an attempt would be no more effective than trying to shut the barn door after all the horses have run off.  No all he wants is justice and the right to live free and work toward his dream.

Well I can tell you that Patrick (and I would think all who have been through this sort of psychological conditioning), can do nothing more than wait upon God to bring about healing of their broken spirits.  I have made many a prayer to God and while I am awaiting those prayers to be answered I, like Patrick, have done all I can for myself.  All I or anyone who has been through similar situations can do, is to wait upon God to either bring to us justice and the fruition of our dreams or to bring our lives to an end.  And while we wait we just do whatever we can to give some sort of meaning to our lives.  For me that means going back to school to acquire knowledge and, hopefully understanding.

It is said in scripture: “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31.  “For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.  For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, you shall diligently consider their place, and it shall not be.  But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.  The wicked plot against the just, and gnashes upon them with their teeth.  The Lord shall laugh at them: for he sees that his day is coming.  The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation.  Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.” Psalm 37:9-15.

I will end here today with a prayer taken from the Book of Psalm: “Unto you do I lift up my eyes, Oh God.  Behold, as the eyes of the servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until he has mercy on us.  Have mercy on us, Oh Lord, have mercy on us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.  Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.” Psalm 123:1-4.

On Friday, Balasubramaniam made a second statutory declaration and withdrew what he had said on Thursday on Najib's involvement with Mongolian murder victim Altantuya Shaarribuu.

Najib said the statutory declaration should not have been made in the first place and Malaysian politics had reached a stage where people were employing dirty tactics, including disregarding the country’s laws.

“Those involved are making a mockery of the country’s laws.

Sauf que ce n'était pas le cas: Obama a toujours eu un programme de centre-droit, et maintenant qu'il est officiellement candidat (maintenant qu'il ne doit plus séduire le petit peuple, mais plutôt les vrais dirigeants, cette élite qui n'est pas soumise au suffrage universel) il s'enfonce davantage vers la droite, alliant à ses positions économiques droitistes les questions de morales conservatrices.

Encore une fois, les véritables perdants de ce virage à droite seront les États-uniens qui ont cru qu'Obama représentait le changement. Ils font la cruelle expérience que la démocratie n'existe plus vraiment aux États-Unis et que les élites ne laisseront jamais aucun candidat de gauche se rendre jusqu'au bout.

Aux États-Unis, vous avez le choix: droite, centre-droit, extrême-droite. Vous avez le choix, mais c'est le choix qu'on vous impose et gare à vous si vous croyez imposer le changement par votre vote.

La création du fichier Edvige dévoile une nouvelle fois le "petit contrôle entre amis" qu'est en train de cautionner ce gouvernement...

Ainsi, on tente encore de faire passer cette mesure presque "totalitaire" pour une mesure qui va servir à préserver la tranquillité des citoyens...
Fini le droit "à la connerie" pour les ados, car comment fera-t-on la différence entre un jeunes qui fait "sa bêtise" et un autre "qui mérite d'être fiché"? Et ce jeune, se verra-t-il refusé un emploi parce qu'à treize ans, il a eu le malheur de faire sa bêtise? A l'heure du fichage ADN, à l'heure où les médias ne seront plus indépendants du pourvoir, à l'heure où certains aimeraient censurer internet, nous sommes en droit de se poser la question suivante: à qui profiteront réellement toutes ces mesures de contrôle de population?
D'autant plus que nous serons aussi fichés selon nos appartenances syndicales et politiques et... selon nos relations...

La ligue des droits de l'Homme s'en insurge, le syndicat de la Magistrature dénonce cette dérive. Que cherche donc ce gouvernent qui sous couvert de sécurité tente d'imposer une nouvelle restriction des libertés en prenant comme prétexte la "délinquance de certains mineurs"?

Quel avenir pour un pays qui "a peur des erreurs de jeunesse des ses enfants"?
Pourquoi ce tel besoin de tout contrôler, si le fichage permettait de résoudre les problèmes, ça se saurait...
Mais non, on préfère ficher, ça coûte certainement moins cher que de se poser les vraies questions et de tenter de les résoudre...
