I met up with Sarah and we got spanish/chinese food and watched There Will Be Blood together. Wowie. It is an immensely captivating and jaw dropping film, I must say it is one of the best films with some of the best acting I have ever seen. Daniel Day Lewis is so believable and Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine)  even more so. A few scenes left me completely speechless. I will probably watch this again this week. Oh man, chills. And did I mention that the soundtrack is just stellar? My god it's great! My favorite track would have to be "Proven Lands" by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, it is just so engaging. I've listened to it quite a few times today already.  I have a few photo galleries to put up when I get to work so expect that tomorrow. I'm pooped so I'm going to bed now.

Nevertheless, there's no doubting the Prize's ability to - overnight, frequently - thrust a struggling yet talented artist into the limelight, thus ensuring a short-term boost in sales. Elsewhere in its history, the nominees and winners have definitely caused me to further investigate a particular artist, as in the case of Antony and the Johnsons in 2005 (who won), and Richard Hawley in 2006 (who didn't).

Though I have no fear in saying that British music is at an all time nadir, it is with some optimism that I would suggest the past twelve months have seen signs of a resurgence among our more experimental and esoteric, risk-taking artists, and I really hope the judges take a careful look at such albums when making their decisions this year. Though I doubt my selections will bear any relation to the real shortlist, here are some British albums that have been released since last August (the usual cut-off point) that I feel the judges would be loath to ignore:

British Sea Power, Do You Like Rock Music? - I'm aware that Pitchfork have significantly decreased their love of BSP since this third LP, owing to it sounding (to their ears) more and more like U2. However, I would have to disagree, since the album is not at all bereft of soul and human interest, and is instead full of sonic experimentation (no doubt stemming from Efrim Menuck's input) and highly agreeable songs that certainly evoke comparison with Echo and the Bunnymen. It's not unthinkable to suggest that the Mercury judges may finally acknowledge the band's existence with a nomination.

Burial, Untrue - It's dubstep at its most evolved. It plainly evokes the unique experience of wondering through the city in the post-club comedown hinterland, and does so with these somewhat familiar 90s-sounding R&B vocals, mutated and squelched alongside harrowing beats.

Elbow, The Seldom Seen Kid - Tragically, I haven't actually heard this album yet, but I remain hopeful that, on the basis of their previous work, and the acclaimed reviews this one's been getting, it will be nominated, which would be an apt peak for such a hard-grafting band as Elbow. It's even got a collaboration with Richard Hawley on it.

Foals, Antidotes - One of the most hyped-up British bands for a while, particularly in more adventurous circles, and this, their debut, really didn't disappoint, for me. While it will always plague me as to whether critics would have preferred the Dave Sitek mix, I think it's only appropriate to applaud a band who have taken the far-out branches of math rock, and honed them into what is, in the end, a great pop album. Admittedly, the vocals and lyrics are sometimes on the wrong side of obtuse, but my personal feeling is that the technical virtuosity of the instrumental work far outweighs the album's problems.

Jonny Greenwood, There Will Be Blood - One of my less likely suggestions, particularly since it consists of half an hour's worth of modernist, minimalist classical music composed for one of the most awe-inspiring films I have seen in my entire life. However, there's no denying its scope and beauty, and the unrelentingly bleak mood that it conveys with a traditional orchestra creating wildly experimental sounds. More importantly, I really think it does work as an album, as opposed to just being a soundtrack: the sequencing of the tracks is good; there is an intelligent arc in tone, pace and texture. 

Hot Chip, Made In The Dark - Their third studio effort isn't at all flawless, but I think it is the unexpected things and the constant sense of surprise and wit that might win it a nomination. In Ready For The Floor the band have surely written their perfect Christmas pop song, while elsewhere on the record there's a definite feeling that the band is learning to embrace their live potential in making songs that just build and build, and then take some unexpected step, such as on Hold On.

The Last Shadow Puppets, The Age of the Understatement - It wouldn't be a surprise at all if this was nominated and indeed won the prize, which would be a fairly unprecedented feat for Alex Turner. It may not be at all forward-thinking (not that that stopped Klaxons from taking home the award last year), but it makes up for that by capturing the spirit of Scott Walker ballads, and embellishing solid hooks and vignettes with some of the most lush and inventive orchestration used in this context for a long time.

M.I.A., Kala - An acquaintance of mine believes that this will never win, because the British press remain sceptical of her confused political agenda, and because they don't like music that's so aggressive and wilfully sloganeering. Whatever the outcome, it only just missed the release deadline for last year's shortlist, and I really do believe they'd be foolish to have forgotten about it. On Kala M.I.A. takes all the sonic invention and global influences on Arular, and builds on them with further-reaching production values and slightly less of the banal anecdotes that peppered its predecessor. It's a stunning work, blending a wide range of talents and samples to make something relentlessly attention-seeking.

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Raising Sand - Another one of which I've only heard snippets, but, on the basis of what I have heard, it could be a worthy contender. The song selection is fantastic; the arrangements very appropriate; and, of course, in Plant and Krauss there is one of the most effective and unusual vocal pairings for a while.

Portishead, Third - I find it very difficult to write about this album: what is there to say about such a wilfully difficult, tortured album that has universally silenced the critics who thought either that Portishead would never make another album, or that any future album from the band would be an extension of the Bristol sound. It's comparable to Massive Attack's Mezzanine only in the fact that they've followed two albums of (admittedly talented) dinner party music with something you would be scared to expose to young children. Musically, the two albums are completely disparate; similar only in their consistently bleak, grimy tone. Third is alternately mechanical, languid, industrial, chilling, upsetting, unrelenting and apocalyptic. And I love it.

Radiohead, In Rainbows - Radiohead have never won the Mercury Prize, and I don't think they will with In Rainbows either. Though it is their best album since Kid A, I don't think it pushes nearly as many boundaries, and, for me, proved to be a relatively 'easy' listen. It's not that their lifting up their feet and taking the foot off the accelerator of invention and rule-breaking, it's just that they've decided on a more relaxed, soulful tone on this album, which I don't think gels with the forward-thinking agenda of the judges. Nevertheless, it's a delight to listen to.

Spiritualized, Songs in A&E - Every positive review of this album has hit the nail right on the head with an extremely large hammer: it sounds like he's writing and singing from beyond the grave; the music is a distillation of all his best work since the days of Spacemen 3; it's life-affirming music made by someone who almost died. And they're all correct, because the album can be beautiful and moving, and then shift into the full-on, space rock sprawling mess that everyone loves.

Oh, by the way, the biggest mistake the judges ever made was not nominating Field Music's Tones of Town last year. It should have been on the shortlist and it should have won.

There are a handful of bands whose music lends itself easily to current cinema.  Radiohead is perhaps near the top, if not the top.  With two songs with titles that infer a connection of their music to the silver screen and Jonny Greenwood's most recent stint as composer for There Will Be Blood,  Thom Yorke & Company have been recognized for their ability to create an ambient type of music that is still memorable and distinguishable, i.e. Pure Moods but with great words and melodies.  What is particularly interesting with this week's selection are the similarities in tone and editing between the music video and the film scene.

Arun: What is a smart thing to say not to embarrass myself in front of Radiohead fans

Arun: Is it okay to say Pablo Honey is my favorite album or is that their most famous album?

I was sitting on my bed yesterday, surfing the internet on my laptop when my brother asked me that question. Two seconds later, I'd told Vivek and we both smirking on opposite sides of the country.

I suppose it's not really fair to tease him. He was born a year after the group released their first album and only recently have we gotten him to admit that Fall Out Boy is actually horrible. Still, when a group has been around as long as Radiohead has, producing several solid albums, it's easy to forget that not everyone is as familiar with their entire discography.

The latest Radiohead CD, their first Best Of/Greatest Hits type album is meant for people like my brother, the new, interested fan who has played "Creep" one too many times on my ipod and is itching for new songs to sing along to. Of course, he could simply ask to borrow my copy of "Amnesiac" or "The Bends" or better yet, let me burn him copies of all of them. No long time fan is going to buy the Best Of because they already have all of the songs on the new album. Most record companies market Greatest Hits albums with at least one *bonus* track to tempt the long time fan, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the release date of Best Of is taking advantage of the Radiohead Spring Tour because fans love buying cds at shows.

If you're new to Radiohead, maybe this album is for you. Personally I'd recommend buying the discography*, album, by album, but not everyone can listen to that much Radiohead. Best Of samples some of my favorite Radiohead songs, "Karma Police", "Fake Plastic Trees", and what started it all "Creep". The dual disc edition is not a good representation of all of their CDs with far more tracks coming from Pablo Honey than say Hail to the Thief. Since In Rainbows was self released, no tracks from their most recent album are on Best Of.

*If you really want to support the artist, buy one of their actual albums. Radiohead did not sanction the release of Best Of.

Para este post he pensado en tratar varios temas que todavía no hemos tocado de Radiohead y que me parecen interesantes. Para empezar hablaré del cover de The Rip de Portishead. A continuación del nuevo tema que se sacó de la manga Thom Yorke en Malahide Castle (Irlanda). Y para acabar un poco de Daydream.

Hace unos días que corre por la red y seguramente ya lo habréis visto, pero no podía dejarlo pasar. En el vídeo que hay a continuación vemos el cover que han hecho Thom Yorke y Jonny Greenwood del The Rip de Portishead, tema incluido en el disco de retorno de los británicos (Third). Sin duda un gozo poder disfrutar del tema interpretado por las acústicas de Radiohead. Sólo, siéntate y disfruta.

El pasado séis de junio en Malahide Castle (Irlanda) y dentro de la gira del grupo. Thom Yorke interpretó acompañado por su piano un tema inédito. La canción ha sido bautizada, en la red, bajo el nombre de Super Collider y es posible que la veamos en un futuro álbum de la banda, o en un nuevo largo de Yorke. Esperemos que este jueves en Barcelona podamos ver algo parecido, ya que la banda nunca repite un "setlist" exactamente en sus directos y nos den esta oportunidad. Atentos a las sorpresas. De momento el vídeo para abrir el apetito.

Ya para acabar, como no lo hemos mencionado demasiado en Musicsfera y se nos ha quedado mala conciencia, lo haremos ahora.

Daydream. Es la única parada de Radiohead en España y será este jueves en el Fórum de Barcelona. Sinnamon ha creado un festival a medida de Radiohead en la que a parte del plato fuerte encontramos otras propuestas que se únen en el mismo punto, la banda de Oxford. Todas ellas o bien interpretan los temas de Radiohead o son bandas que admiran. Entre ellas me gustaría destacar a Bat For Lashes, Liars, M83 y Modeselektor.

Tickets Daydream | Sinnamon

Despite all the bleeps, bloops, squeals, screeches, and ondes martenots that makes a Radiohead song sound like a Radiohead song, most of their compositions come into the world rather quietly at Thom Yorke's piano or guitar. This song, tentatively titled "Super-Collider," was premiered at the first Dublin show on June 7 (luck of the Irish, eh?).

I have no doubt that the song will go through countless arrangements, re-arrangements, title changes, and will possibly not be recorded for a decade. But it's still exciting nonetheless to hear new stuff being road-tested — especially in such a crude (but beautiful) early form. Right now it sounds like a cross between "Backdrifts" and "Faust Arp." Just wait until Jonny Greenwood gets hold of it.

Speaking of Jonny, he and Thom did an impromptu live performance of "The Rip," a track off the new Portishead album, Third. It's a nice cover: Two 'heads are indeed better than one.

I'll be at work again today, focussing on Chapter Four and hoping to finish it by the week. I guess by the time the week is over, you could say that I'm halfway through. And now I'll tell you how it looks so far.

I am now more uncertain than ever, even though there is a definite shape and direction to this. As I begin to approach the less familiar parts of the novel, I'm beginning to not know how to go about writing some of the stuff. It's less familiar, less comfortable, and I definitely have to dig a different pit to find what I'm looking for.

That said, I'm pretty happy with what has been written so far. I quite like what I've managed to do, so at least that's sort of comforting. The challenge now is to bridge what I've done already and what I've yet to do, which isn't exactly easy because the beginning of the book looks very different from the end.

So here we go, here we go.

Remember when we were all drinking each other's milkshakes? Or when nouns were prefaced by "there will be"? Cynthia Hawkins wrote a funny article back in March about this and other movie quotes that became unlikely catch phrases, and this gave me a chance to toss in my own take on Daniel Day-Lewis's undying love of partially gelatinated non-dairy gum-based beverages.

Pourtant, a priori, c'était mal barré, cette histoire d'un magnat du pétrole rusé, misanthrope et grisé par le pouvoir et l'argent au point de sacrifier son fils et sa santé mentale avait tout pour que Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, pas n'importe qui donc) accouche d'une fable convenue sur le thème "les self-made men sont des colosses au pied d'argile". Sur le fond, c'est un petit peu le cas, mais cela ne suffit pas à atténuer la réussite de ce long-métrage intime et cruel. Car derrière, il y a du répondant, à commencer par le casting, touché par la grâce comme on dit quand on est journaliste. Enfin, casting... Disons plutôt la paire Daniel Day Lewis (et son délicieux accent moustachu) / Paul Dano (le frère mutique de Little Miss Sunshine, qui campe un fanatique religieux franchement flippant) tant les autres personnages sont pour la plupart plus que secondaires face à l'ascension parallèle de ces deux illuminés.

Seconde agréable surprise, le choix d'Anderson de ne pas avoir cédé à la tentation de trousser l'une de ces fresques pétaradantes, où l'on pourrait incruster un compteur pour que s'y affiche en temps réel le pognon dilapidé. Dans There Will Be Blood, on ne dénombre ainsi qu'une seule scène à fort potentiel pyrotechnique, l'inflammation d'un puits du précieux liquide, au demeurant impressionnante. Le reste du temps, la caméra, au service d'une réalisation quasi-naturaliste, s'attarde sur les étendues arides de la Californie (superbe photographie), des détails du quotidien de l'entrepreneur aux dents longues, scrute les regards, les syllabes qui sortent de la mêlée, les silences et les douleurs qui se fraient un chemin derrière le monolithisme de Daniel Plainview (l'accroc à l'or noir, pour ceux qui n'avaient pas compris).

A ce titre, la première partie de cette libre adaptation du romain Oil ! (Upton Sinclair), muette, où l'on observe les premiers coups de pioche de Plainview, est de loin la plus hypnotique, en partie grâce à la musique de Johnny Greenwood (guitariste de Radiohead), étonnamment contemporaine. Ensuite, on se retrouve en terrain connu, celui des luttes d'influence, du succès qui fait tourner la caboche, de la décadence et de l'escalade vers l'horreur. Mais même si l'on ne retrouve pas le trouble léthargique de cette amorce, la fluidité du rythme et la majesté de l'ensemble sont telles qu'on s'abandonne volontiers à cette époportrait récompensé(e) aux Oscars. Inutile  de googler le terme époportrait, je viens de l'inventer, il est à moi, et j'ai un petit contrat tout prêt pour qui souhaite l'utiliser.
