TAKERU KOBAYASHI AND JOEY CHESTNUT GO MOUTH TO MOUTH

In an epic July 4th battle, American competitive eater Joey Chestnut defeated Kobayashi in the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest at Coney Island. Chestnut had to go overtime to win the grueling mouth-to-mouth competition.

The two were tied at the end of regulation, both having devoured 59 hot dogs in ten minutes. Kobayashi (a six time winner of the Nathan’s event) took the early lead by stuffing down 10 dogs in the first minute but was caught by Chestnut down the stretch. 25,000 people jammed the streets of Brooklyn to watch the event.

Chestnut dominated Kobayashi in the overtime eat-off winning the coveted Yellow Mustard Belt.

I am thrilled that Justin Hawkins from New Mexico state is on the summer league roster for the Sacramento Kings. Justin Hawkins played on the basketball team for Mayfair High School and then went to play for Utah University playing along side former #1 pick in the 2005 nba draft Andrew Bogut of the Milwaukee Bucks. Hawkins then transferred to New Mexico state and was coached by current Sacremento Kings coach Reggie Theus. Justin Hawkins was the leading scorer for New Mexico state this year. Justin Hawkins has many NBA ties from playing with Andrew Bogut in Utah, being coached Reggie Theus in New Mexico state, from playing with Atlanta Hawks Josh Childress in high school. I was hoping all year that Justin Hawkins would somehow make it to the Sacramento Kings because of his ties with Reggie Theus. As a fellow Monsoon I am thrilled for you Justin and I hope you make the Sacramento Kings. I will be rooting you on in the summer league. I really feel like you can be a steal in the NBA.

Having no life I decided to rank the white guys in the NBA. As you'll see it shows that white guys suck at playing basketball. Please feel free to comment. Note : These are the current white guys in the NBA and not from the past so no Larry Bird. I did not include European or other white guys born out of the US. I did not include Steve Nash because he's Candadian. I did not include Jason Kidd, Mike Bibby because they are mixed. I know this is pretty racist. Kevin Love and Joe Alexander are ranked lower because they are rookies and have yet to play an NBA game. ESPN True Hoop please put this on ESPN NBA website please.

You've seen movies set in alleys, rooftops and courtyards, but Old Pasadena has decided if these make great settings for movies, these also are great settings to see movies!

From the great Breakfast at Tiffany's to the giggle-worthy Hygiene Shorts from the 1950s to the gory The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to the God-knows-what-to-expect student shorts, Fridays and Saturdays will be movie nights in Old Pas starting 11 July.

This year will be a special celebration of Audrey Hepburn, including Charade, Sabrina and Roman Holiday. Other classic movies shown include Kurosawa's Seven Samurai and Mary Poppins. If you want an all-nighter, they will also be showing the Lord of the Rings from 8:30 p.m. to dawn.

FESTIVAL SCHEDULE:

Friday, July 11

7:00 PM – EMERGING FILMMAKERS ArmoryCenterfor the Arts, 145 N. Raymond

Films and shorts by students and faculty from the Armory Center for the Arts, Art Center College of Design and Pasadena City College.

8:30 PM – CLASSIC HEPBURN: BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S One Colorado Courtyard, 41 Hugus Alley

"I've got to do something about the way I look. I mean a girl just can't go to Sing Sing with a green face." - So sighs Audrey Hepburn's girl-about-town Holly Golightly, breezing ever-so-gently through the real world with hardly a ripple. But when she meets sober, handsome, nice guy George Peppard, she begins to gradually re-think her “anything-goes,” high-living lifestyle.

10:00 PM – SCI FI: THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953) School House Parking structure rooftop, 33 E. Green Street.

Actress Ann Robinson will introduce the screening.

The quintessential 1950's science fiction film, in which scientists and the military join forces to conquer an alien invasion. Even today, few films can match this movie's triumphant blend of special effects and snappy romance (in the form of the relationship between astronomer Gene Barry and his spunky girlfriend Ann Robinson.)

Saturday, July 12

7:00 PM – EMERGING FILMMAKERS Armory Center for the Arts, 145 N. Raymond

Films and shorts by students and faculty from the Armory Center for the Arts, Art Center College of Design and Pasadena City College.

8:30 PM - CLASSIC HEPBURN: MY FAIR LADY One Colorado Courtyard, 41 Hugus Alley

This unforgettable musical adaptation is PYGMALION as reinvented by Lerner and Loewe as reinvented by master director George Cukor. Oscar winner Rex Harrison plays Henry Higgins, who teaches lower class, Cockney flower girl Audrey Hepburn to be a lady and falls in love with her in the process.

Friday, July 18

7:00 PM – EMERGING FILMMAKERS Armory Cente for the Arts, 145 N. Raymond

Films and shorts by students and faculty from the Armory Center for the Arts, Art Center College of Design and Pasadena City College.

8:30 PM – CLASSIC HEPBURN: CHARADE One Colorado Courtyard, 41 Hugus Alley

Widow Audrey Hepburn finds herself thrust into adventure when her dead husband's war buddies come after her, thinking she has money they stole together during the war. Cary Grant is the stranger who is as mysterious as he is attractive--and whom Hepburn falls for as she runs for her life.

10:00 PM – HORROR FILM: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE Basement of Schoolhouse Parking Garage, 33 E. Green Street.

Director Tobe Hooper will introduce the screening.

One of the best American horror films from the 1970s and certainly one of the scariest movies ever made. The unknown actors and real-life locations burn themselves into your memory, assuming a nightmarishly twisted reality that lingers long after you’ve seen the film. After hearing of a cemetery desecration, Marilyn Burns and friends go on a jaunt in the broiling Texas countryside to make sure her grandparents’ graves are okay, only to become stranded at the rural home of a family of inbred cannibals. Director Tobe Hooper expertly escalates the horror until you can’t stand it anymore…then goes one step further. With Gunnar Hansen, Ed Neal.

Saturday, July 19

10:00 AM - FAMILY MATINEE: MARY POPPINS Laemmle’s One Colorado Cinemas, 42 Miller Alley

Julie Andrews is God’s gift to nanny-dom as Mary Poppins in this classic musical comedy/fantasy. When Poppins comes to work for the Banks family in their turn-of-the-20th-century London household, she uplifts everyone’s spirits and brings magic to their lives. Dick Van Dyke is Bert, the good-natured chimney sweep and the great Jane Darwell, in her last screen appearance, plays the bird lady. Winner of five Academy Awards, including Andrews for Best Actress and Richard M. & Robert B. Sherman for Best Original Song and Best Original Music Score.

7:00 PM – EMERGING FILMMAKERS ArmoryCenterfor the Arts, 145 N. Raymond

Films and shorts by students and faculty from the Armory Center for the Arts, Art Center College of Design and Pasadena City College.

8:30 PM – CLASSIC HEPBURN: SABRINA One Colorado Courtyard, 41 Hugus Alley

Chauffeur's daughter Audrey Hepburn blooms from ugly duckling to fashion queen as she tries to choose between wealthy, middle-aged Humphrey Bogart (at his sexy, smokey best) and cocky lover-boy William Holden (a Wilder favorite). Billy Wilder's classic romantic triangle.

10:00 PM – MENTAL HYGIENE SHORT FILMS Mercantile Alley (right behind Coffee Bean at 18 S. Fair Oaks)

Presented by Archivist and Historian Rick Prelinger.

For the quarter-century following World War II, a special kind of classroom film received wide circulation. These "mental hygiene" films thrived in a confused and nervous America. The rebellious behavior of young people challenging the social norms struck fear into the hearts of parents and educators, who saw dark futures for teens who broke the rules and refused to fit in with society. These concerned adults embraced the metal hygiene film as a new means of delivering social guidance. The creators of the films took their cues from the wildly successful training and propaganda films of the World War II era. They used the same shock and scare techniques to warn teenagers about substance abuse, venereal disease, juvenile delinquency and the awful fate of kids who drive too fast on prom night.

Friday, July 25

7:00 PM – EMERGING FILMMAKERS Armory Center for the Arts, 145 N. Raymond

Films and shorts by students and faculty from the Armory Center for the Arts, Art Center College of Design and Pasadena City College.

8:30 PM – CLASSIC HEPBURN: ROMAN HOLIDAY One Colorado Courtyard, 41 Hugus Alley

A real-life princess (Audrey Hepburn), weary of her sheltered existence, takes off on her own to see the sights of Rome, only to encounter romance in the form of suave Gregory Peck. But unbeknownst to Hepburn, Peck is really a reporter out for a story, and this inevitably complicates things as the two grow more intimate. This sweet-natured romantic comedy won three Oscars, including Best Actress for Hepburn.

10:45 PM – CLASSIC FOREIGN FILM: SEVEN SAMURAI One Colorado Courtyard, 41 Hugus Alley

Director Akira Kurosawa's most famous film is certainly one of the finest movies ever made - a huge, sprawling but intimate, character-driven period epic about an aging swordsman (the great Takashi Shimura) who enlists six other warriors-for-hire (amongst them, Toshiro Mifune, Minoru Chiaki, Isao Kimura, Daisuke Kato, Seiji Miyaguchi, Yoshio Inaba) to safeguard a remote village plagued by bandits.

Saturday, July 26

7:00 PM – EMERGING FILMMAKERS ArmoryCenterfor the Arts, 145 N. Raymond

Films and shorts by students and faculty from the Armory Center for the Arts, Art Center College of Design and Pasadena City College.

8:30 PM – GREASE with guest to be announced, 22 Mills Place

Pompadoured tough-guy John Travolta learns the meaning of true love, 1950's style, from summertime sweetheart Olivia Newton-John, with help from a fantastic supporting cast including Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway, Eve Arden and Frankie Avalon. A soundtrack of wall-to-wall hits ("You're The One That I Want," "Hopelessly Devoted To You," "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee") in director Randal Kleiser's irresistible teen-dream of a movie musical.

8:30 PM till Dawn – LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY, One Colorado Courtyard, 41 Hugus Alley, Middle Earth

J.R.R. Tolkien's literary masterpiece The Lord of the Rings has influenced generations of readers worldwide and continues to captivate new fans around the globe. Director Peter Jackson and a brilliantly talented cast and crew have brought to cinematic life the epic adventure of good against evil. The future of civilization rests in the fate of the One Ring, which has been lost for centuries. Powerful forces are unrelenting in their search for it. Fate has placed it in the hands of a young Hobbit named Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), who inherits the Ring - and undertakes a heroic quest revealing how, through courage, commitment, and determination, even the smallest of us can change the world.

Screening concludes with sunrise Hobbit breakfast.

"Summer days drifting away
to oh oh those summer nights..."
-Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta

I have a lot of memories about summer from when I was younger. My mom used to take me and my brother to my grandmother's apartment to stay with her for several days. We would hang around the pool all day and later in the afternoon our aunt would take us to 7-11 for Slurpees or to Thrifty for ice cream cones (then and now, I always got mint chip). Some summers we would fly to visit my mom's parents, and my memories there involve camping, or sitting around my grandparents' table eating peanut butter on white bread and drinking cherry koolaid, or climbing to the top of my grandpa's big Chevy van and sitting on the roof of it feeling so big and on top of it all.

As I got older, summer meant laying out in the sun all day slathered in baby oil (yeah, I know, I know - I'm very lucky and see my dermatologist regularly for mole checks as should all of you!). Summer meant going to the movies in the middle of the week with friends. One year, summer meant band camp ("This one time at band camp..." A myth. I don't know of anything interesting that happened at band camp - that was the year that Bryan Adams came out with "Everything I Do (I Do it For You)" and I remember some girl had that on repeat constantly. I also remember my first adventure in dorm food at band camp... which led to a week of eating Cap'n Crunch three meals a day). The other summers meant cheerleading camp (Like, Oh my god! We won the spirit stick! We've got spirit, yes we do!). One summer, I worked at an ice cream shop, making milkshakes, cones and flurries (like a blizzard... but not) all day. It took me a long time to be able to eat ice cream again after that summer.

In college, I'd come home in the summer and work. I've always been a worker. I'd work full time, and come home and fill my nights with my friends - being social, going to parties, hanging around bonfires with a beer and some laughs (again, how I could I tolerate beer then? I hate it now).

Summer used to be something to look forward to.

Now, summer is just like any other time of the year. Except worse. It's hotter and my kids are out of school and daycare and there is a greater demand for me to be interesting and fun and entertaining. And I am interesting and fun and entertaining (Oh, I dare you to disagree), but apparently my kids don't always think so. My six year old told me yesterday, "Mom, you're not funny. Dad's not either." Great, thanks. Excuse me while I scrape what's remaining of my self esteem off the carpet.

The fact that it's July now makes me happy, as it means we are now just 30 days away from August. And August is right before September. And that's when summer ends. Summer ending will be a very good thing indeed.

Just about everyone’s favorite villain these days is associated in some way with oil companie

Just about everyone's favorite villain these days is associated in some way with oil companies. J. R. Ewing from the old Dallas TV series quickly comes to mind. Gas prices have hogged the headlines of newspapers and commandeered TV news media since at least late August of 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devastated the South in general and New Orleans in particular.

Amazingly, I don't think I ever watched an episode of Dallas in its entirety. I couldn't separate its star, Larry Hagman, with his former role as the dopey husband of Barbara Eden in the sitcom I Dream of Jeannie in the '60s. Truth be told: I watched several I Dream of Jeannie episodes and quite a few other campy TV shows as a kid, but I digress. A few movies about oil come to mind, however. In case you didn't see There Will Be Blood in theaters in late 2007, it's worth renting it from Netflix or snapping up a DVD or Blue-Ray to get a feel for just how demonic an oilman can be. Mind you, as much as I detest oil companies, most of the people who work for them are decent, hard-working folk. Then there's wildcat oil megalomaniac Daniel Plainview, one of muckraking author Upton Sinclair's classic creations, that conflicted misanthrope played to perfection by Daniel-Day Lewis in the film. Once you see him in that bar scene hovering over some oil company profiteers where he takes a simple line like "I drink your milkshake... I drink it all up!" and wields the metaphor like an oil-soaked Molotov Cocktail, it puts the oil industry's lock on the world's economy into painfully clear perspective. Other memorable films about oil that stand out in my memory are Giant, the one with the late, great James Dean, and Urban Cowboy with John Travolta. Then there's the gritty new reality TV show Black Gold on TruTV. My wife really loathes that show. The one episode where the Black Dog oil crew went out shooting at doves kept making me think of Dick Cheney. If you're a lawyer reading this, never mind....

While U.S. economists have been begrudgingly accepting the fact that we are sailing into a very uncertain future, the community where I live still seems to be partying like it's 1999. Except that loads of people are losing their jobs and moving away or they're just getting fed up with the ridiculous commutes they've been tolerating for years to their jobs.

My wife Debbie told me recently that one of her friends who works for the L.A. County Office of Education drives from Victorville to Downey and sometimes gets assigned to work in the South Bay. We're talking about 70 miles for Downey alone, and another 30 for places like Torrance and Long Beach, conservatively. That's part of the California dream: own your own home and you may need to drive 70-100 miles to work so that you can pay your mortgage and eat at Olive Garden on Friday nights.

Sometimes I feel like I'm sitting on a high desert hillside alongside the creosote bushes and Spanish mustard clumps watching lemmings take their fateful headers off cliffs. I'm referring to the mass exodus of cars that swarm onto the local freeway - Highway 14, aka the Antelope Valley Freeway to us locals - who willingly take their ritual crawl "down below" to Santa Clarita, the Valley, Los Angeles and even beyond to earn their almighty dollars. Of course, each week their paychecks shrink as the price of gas escalates.

I didn't have to be a Mensa like my dad to figure out that commuting to work would be an incredibly stupid and sometimes dangerous way to support myself and my family. He drove about eight miles each way to work for Lockheed in Burbank when I was growing up in Sherman Oaks. Around where I live, the city is so spread apart that it takes eight miles to get to my daughter's high school. Six miles is the distance to the nearest Wal-Mart. The nearest gas station and grocery store are four miles away. With that in mind, I coordinate my errands so that I can do it all in one trip per day, and I may not leave my house for days at a time.

Since I work at home, my commute from the master bedroom is about 15 feet. My kitchen is downstairs, so that's about 35 feet away. I can get away with this lifestyle because I work with an incredibly congenial bunch of people who are part of the Free Online Cash System. It didn't cost me anything to join, and I think even a brainy skeptic like my dad would've warmed up to it had he ever embraced computer technology instead of his old typewriter and word processor.

My neighborhood is almost entirely devoid of people during the weekdays. Sometimes I feel like Will Smith in 2007's I Am Legend. There's nooobody home. My tract was built in 2005 and, for awhile, it seemed that every other neighbor had a dog alarm. There was Rottweiler Row on one side of my street and the even more testy poodles and chihuahuas on my side of the street. Lately, virtually every dog has either earned a pass key to stay out of the hot desert heat, or they and their masters barked up the wrong tree and went through foreclosure. On my street alone, 12 out of 28 houses have the dreaded "blue slips" taped to their almost shiny new garages. So I live in an early 21st century ghost town in the making.

If you're driving around in a car that gets fewer than 25 miles per gallon, you've probably discovered that the gas pump shuts off at $50 for credit card purchases. That happened to me for the first time in June, and I drive a four-year-old Saturn Ion. It's no Prius, but I was feeling pretty good about the fact that I'd cut down my monthly driving from 2,000+ miles in 2005 when I was commuting 40 miles to work. For the past three years, I've been driving an average of about 600 miles a month. Nevertheless, my eyeballs momentarily left their sockets when I rolled up $50 at a Thrifty gas mart. The pump ka-chinged off even though my tank was still about a half gallon off from being full. I hear that stations are resetting their credit purchase maximums now to $75 before they cut off, but a Hummer owner will still need to do two transactions or shell out $150 cash to fill up their gas guzzlers.

The week I wrote this, gas prices hovered at around $4.45 a gallon for regular unleaded at the low-end stations and upwards of $5 a gallon for diesel locally. When I took my family on a trip to Northern California in 2003, we were paying around $1.87 per gallon at a Terrible Herbst station in Gilroy. So here we are five years later, looking at possibly $5 a gallon or even more late this summer, and the news media is talking about $200 a barrel oil and $7 a gallon gas in the not-too-distant future. It could happen. Gas has more than doubled in price since the early part of this decade.

There's nothing that takes the fun out of living large in communities loosely developed over huge expanses of land like my valley than rapidly escalating gas prices. I mean, I live in a part of the state where mass transit is, at best, mediocre, with the possible exception of the Metrolink. Maybe now we'll get that high speed rail line linking San Diego to Sacramento and a subway to the sea (or light rail to the L.A. International Airport). Nah. Everyone will just have to start taking the bus in L.A. before that happens. And the band Missing Persons will need to change the lyrics to their '80s hit Nobody Walks in L.A.

My prescription to relieve gas pains: work at home, preferably in something like the Free Online Cash System. Fill 'er up!

Who had the best ... and worst ... mock drafts?

I feel vindicated. In providing a mock draft only on the top 14 (lottery) picks, I wrote that going beyond that would've been "tedious and irresponsible." Mock drafts are among those fixtures that the sports media have been churning out in rote fashion for decades. Fans and readers seem to demand this analysis, even though it is rarely based on accurate information and is about as valuable as Zach Randolph's contract.

Lo and behold, the Web site Sports Media Analysis has undertaken the only task I can think of that is more tedious than doing a mock draft: grading the performance of the writers and media members who did mock drafts. The results were predictable, and to be honest, fascinating.

Using a grading system that provided points for correct picks and weighting for closely projecting where a player would be selected, Sports Media Analysis determined the following:

Winners

Sports Illustrated’s Ian Thomsen claimed the overall top spot after ranking 4th in the correct pick portion of the analysis and topping the pick difference analysis. Closely trailing Mr. Thomsen were Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer, Sam Smith of Sporting News, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle and Krista Jahnke of the Detroit Free Press. The Orlando Sentinel’s Tim Povtak, MyNBADraft.com’s Todd Robinson, InsideHoops.com, the Chicago Sun-Times’ John Jackson and the Boston Herald’s David Moore rounded out the top 10. Although he performed well overall, Mr. Feigen deserves some criticism here for completely forgetting (I assume) about Eric Gordon. Not only did he not have Gordon going in the Top 10, as almost every other mock draft did, he completely left him out of the first round.

Mr. Thomsen’s win was fueled by his dominance in the Second 10 picks of the draft. He was the only sportswriter to correctly guess more than two of the Second 10 picks – Robin Lopez to the Suns at #15, Marreese Speights to the 76ers at #16 and JJ Hickson to the Cavaliers – and his picks in the Second 10 averaged only 3.1 draft slots away from where they were actually drafted. No other prognosticator had an average less than 5.0 during the Second 10. Additionally, Mr. Thomsen’s overall average pick difference for the 1st round was 3.667, the only average under 4.0. Finally, Mr. Thomsen finished in the top seven of every single category, with only Mr. Bonnell joining him as a Top 10 finisher in every category. Dominant indeed.

LOSERS

On one hand, I hate to highlight the people who did not perform particularly well on the mock draft, but that is exactly why it is important that someone do this analysis. At some point, we as readers have to trust our sources of information, and it only makes sense that we analyze them to find out who among them is consistently full of it. Much to my own personal surprise, two of my favorite NBA writers – Chad Ford and John Hollinger – were woefully bad on their mock drafts.

It’s not a huge surprise that Mr. Hollinger was off but I had always presumed that Mr. Ford would be at or near the top in an objective analysis such as this considering the amount of coverage he gives the NBA Draft. Mr. Ford was especially dreadful in the Second 10, in which he did not pick a single player correctly and he averaged a second-worst 8.2 draft slots away per player. In addition to picking two players in the Second 10 who were not drafted until the 2nd Round – Mario Chalmers and DeAndre Jordan – he slotted both Kosta Koufos and Donte Greene towards the top of the Second 10.

In addition, the Web site found, "Of the 12 newspaper writers who completed mock drafts only two – the Arizona Republic’s Paul Coro and Mr. Jackson of the Chicago Sun-Times – correctly picked their local teams’ 1st round pick." This is interesting because it makes me wonder if the rest of the writers were victims of misinformation and smokescreens planted by the coaches and executives they cover.

The bit on Thomsen being the only mockster to correctly predict more than two picks between Nos. 11-21 only validated my point about how silly it is to even attempt a mock draft that goes much beyond the lottery selections.

I had five correct picks out of the 14 lottery selections, one fewer than Sports Media's winner, Thomsen. Obviously, he would've blown me away with his dominance in the second half of the first round -- and the fact that he had Jason Thompson going 14th, only two spots off, proved that Ian was on this big time.

But to further illustrate my point about how fruitless these mock drafts are, the two readers who took me on in my mock draft challenge got seven and six correct picks out of 14, respectively. Presumably, they were doing this off the top of their heads, without the benefit -- or should I say, disadvantage -- of talking with team executives and agents.

The analysts didn't count my mock draft in their calculations because I didn't complete it. In my mind, that means that I should have won.

P.S. Thanks to Henry Abbott of TrueHoop for pointing me to the link. Hey, Abbott, how'd you do in your mock draft?

Baron Davis shocked the Warriors by opting out of his contract on Monday. Imagine their surprise now.

Davis

NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein that the guard reached a verbal agreement with the Clippers on Tuesday night and will sign a new multiyear contract with Los Angeles after the leaguewide moratorium on signings and trades is lifted July 9.

Davis was in line to make $17.8 million in the last year of his deal with the Warriors, but after telling the team that he wanted to stay, opted out at the last minute.

Sources told ESPN.com that Davis, 29, will receive a five-year deal worth an estimated $65 million.

Forward Elton Brand also opted out of his contract with the Clippers on Monday, and speculation quickly began that the team would try to keep Brand and sign Davis. This scenario is only possible if the Clippers renounce the rights of Corey Maggette and Brand takes a slight pay cut.

Sources say the Clippers are expected to do just that and quickly reach a verbal agreement to bring back Brand.

Maggette opted out of his deal on Monday as well.

Davis averaged 21.8 points, 7.6 assists and 4.7 rebounds last season for a Warriors team that won 48 games but did not make the playoffs.

There are things I'd like to say that somehow don't fit the "theme" of having a cool job.

What are these things I'd like to say? I think many of them involve movies.

Movies I love. Movies I hate. I watch a shitload of movies.

If I have an interesting thought, I'm much more confident that I can squeeze it into a post about a movie I've seen or heard of than a post about someone else's job.

So witness jimsmuse 2.0...

Yes, I love the movie Carrie.

Carrie is my name, and today that movie suits my mood.

I really love this movie. I've always wondered if the judges at Cannes in 1994, only watched it once or twice and recognized it for the great film it is. It took me more than that, in fact I'm still watching it and still appreciating it more each time. Last year someone gave me the Collector's Edition DVD, which contains a lot of bonus material, interviews and such. I came up with an idea for myself: when bored, when in doubt, watch Pulp Fiction.

Here're a few of my favorite moments.

Oh man, I'm goin', that's all there is to it, I'm fuckin' goin'

On Friday morning I was watching Today while getting dressed (it was a day off, hence the late start) and Hoda and Kathy Lee interviewed Kelly Preston, aka Mrs. John Travolta. She had a new movie premiering on Lifetime over the weekend. They chitchatted about the movie and then either Hoda or Kathie Lee (I don't remember, they are equally irritating and now shall be known as Koda) asked Kelly how she does it, meaning how does she balances working and her kids. Are. You. Kidding. Me?

Kelly talked about how John flies the whole family to location and blah, blah, blah. I am sorry but Kelly Preston has nothing in common with the regular working mom. I do not see Kelly stressed out because she is stuck in traffic and will not make it to daycare before 6:30pm, then incur the $20 fine for being late. Or having business meetings planned for the day only to wake up with a vomiting child and wondering if her employer will be angry (e.g. ding her come raise/bonus time) for calling into work.

Admittedly, I am very fortunate. I have a supportive spouse, flexible job and family nearby that is always offering to help. If I am perturbed with Today's assumption that Kelly Preston can feel my working mom pain, then how about the women who have no support and no flexibility, is Kelly speaking to them? I can see where Koda are coming from, they have more in common with Kelly Preston then I ever will. But to assume that Kelly Preston's work/life balance advice can help out Mrs. Jane American is preposterous. If Kelly does not get paid because she is not working since the kids are ill, does she get behind on bills?

I would much rather see an interview between Koda and a woman who works at Big Box Store forty hours a week and have them ask her how she manages. She might tell them she does not manage, but the interview would be much more realistic to the vast majority of viewers. I know, I know what do I expect from Today? Apparently way too much.

On August 19, 2005 Suns Joe Johnson was involved in a sign-and-trade deal with the Hawks for Boris Diaw and two unprotected future first-round draft picks. After two years we now can finally analyze the trade and clearly see the winner is the Atlanta Hawks. Remember this looked like a horrible deal for the Hawks and was very similar to the Eddy Curry deal which cost the Knicks two lottery picks (Tyrus Thomas, and Joakim Noah). The Suns also got Boris Diaw who became a good player for the Suns and won most improved player. In the 2007 NBA draft things looked bad for the Hawks as they finished 4th worst in the league and their first round pick belonged to the Suns as long as it was wasn't in the top three. The Hawks got lucky and in the lottery got in the top three in which they draft Al Horford who played a big part in this Hawk's playoff push in many years. Luck was clearly on the Hawks side as had the Hawks gotten the 4th pick or lower the pick would have been the Suns and they could have drafted such players as Yi Jianlian, Corey Brewer, Brandan Wright or Joakim Noah. The Suns could have greatly used these players for their championship run. But most importantly had the Suns gotten the Hawks first round pick they would have been able to trade it along with Shawn Marion to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Kevin Garnett. Had this possibly had gone down the Suns right now would probably be NBA champions as the Boston Celtics championship team without Garnett would have never been created. But the Hawks got lucky and got Al Horford instead. In this years 2008 NBA draft the Hawks got lucky again their first round draft pick was actually unprotected but the Hawks with Al Horford and Joe johnson got to the playoffs. So the Suns ended up with the number 15 pick and drafted Robin Lopez not (OJ Mayo, Derrick Rose, Mike Beasley) something the Hawks will not regret. Now I'm still not sure if the Suns still have another of the Hawks first round draft pick because they weren't able to use it in the 2007 NBA draft.

It's sad whats happened to the Summer Pro League held every summer in Cal State Long Beach. This was the place to be every year to see the newly drafted NBA players play their first games. Past players in SPL included such NBA superstars as Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Paul Pierce, Amare Stoudemire, Andrew Bynum and many more. Though I'm not old enough I heard even NBA legends like Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas even played there before. What's sad is that the SPL is no longer there because last year the Lakers who played there for 37 seasons left for the more popular NBA Las Vegas summer league. The Las Vegas summer league has taken away the NBA teams including the lakers and clippers they have 21 teams thats almost the whole league. For the last couple of years the SPL which had many NBA teams come slowly was reduced to four teams then to two teams only. Until last year after the Lakers left the SPL has no NBA teams. This year the website is gone as well and i'm guessing that there will be no SPL again. How could the NBA just let this happen? Doesn't history mean anything to them. A lot of people do not have enough money to afford NBA tickets to watch games so they go to the summer league. At the summer league poor people actually have the chance to sit in the front row looking up close at the players a opportunity most people will never be able to have. People finally get the chance to be like Jack Nicholson for a couple of minutes. People might see a young player like Carmelo Anthony for example upclose and say that they did see him upclose and have memories about it because they will never see Anthony upclose again unless they watch a television screen because he is now famous. Another sad part about this is that if you actually went to the summer pro league and saw the people coming there are so many little kids coming. Future NBA fans. You see so many dads and sons together coming and with the SPL closing you ruin that. The saddest part about the SPL closing down is that the people that come to watch the SPL are usually die-hard NBA fans because they know that the are watching low-grade players playing new drafted NBA rookies, future D-leaguers, players that will never make an NBA roster playing and yet these fans still come and cheer. We don't even need so many teams like Las Vegas has we can be like the Rocky Mountain Revenue and have a few teams. Or I was thinking maybe we can schedule the games later on in the summer so teams will come to the SPL. Please bring back the SPL Lakers, Jerry Buss, Mitch Kupchak, Magic Johnson, David Stern anybody. Please comment if you understand what I'm saying in hopes of maybe somebody important reading this who might do something about it.

They had to forfeit picks in 2001, 2002, and 2004 due to an illegal secret contract agreement between the Timberwolves and Joe Smith in violation of the NBA’s salary cap rules. Based upon an arbitrator's original ruling, the Minnesota Timberwolves forfeited their own first-round draft picks in the 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 NBA Drafts, were fined $3.5 million, and the contract between Joe Smith and the Wolves was voided. Eventually the league awarded the Timberwolves their first-round picks in 2003 and 2005 due to sustained excellent behavior in their operations. They had to forfeit their first round draft picks remember this was a average team that couldn't make it out of the first round and really could have used the picks to win. Not to mention the Roy to Foye deal. As well as this years draft trading a all-star in Mayo for a Mchale clone in Love.

Trading Lamar Odom for Vince Carter would be good for both teams. Especially the Lakers because this would energize Vince Carter's career again playing with Kobe and playing with a team thats contending for a championship. Vince Carter might shoot a lot but he'll take less shots with Kobe around. And Carter can give you another offensive threat while Odom never can get much points offensively. The only problem for the Lakers is that Carter's contract is too long. This is a good deal for the Nets too because Odom is an upgrade over Vince and he fits there young squad. Plus Odom's contract is two years and he can opt soon.
