Discipleship Proposal #3: Mission Pieces

Some were concerned that the Roles & Goals model would be too nondescript. Many were concerned

Some were concerned that the Roles & Goals model would be too nondescript. Many were concerned that Maturity Mile Markers concept is too regimented, linear, possibly even bordering on legalism. Between the two could be something like "Mission Pieces" - okay, so the creative titling needs a little work!

The idea is to:

Start with your church's mission statement

Identify key clusters of Biblical direction for each segment of that mission

Create a resource page for each cluster of Biblical direction

Let people figure out for themselves (or with a group) when, how, and what they need to work on next with Jesus

For example, my church's mission statement is to "connect in life-changing relationship with Jesus, church family, and people who don't know Jesus." Key clusters of Biblical direction under the first part of our mission (life-change with Jesus) would include prayer, confession, and worship, as well as a handful of others. We would then create a resource page on prayer covering Biblical teaching (Lord's Prayer, Hezekiah's Prayer, Paul's Prayers, etc...), exercises & activities (practicing thankfulness, experiencing solitude, etc...), links (International House of Prayer), self-assessments, and book recommendations (Brother Lawrence) that may help someone achieve a vibrant prayer life as part of their life-change with Jesus.

People might choose work on the prayer piece for this season of life to develop "life-change with Jesus," or they might choose confession, or maybe something else. People might feel stuck and choose to utilize the resource page, or they might have a clear call from God and not need any additional input. People might pursue maturity on their own, or they might find support in a group setting.

The important part is that disciples of Jesus are always choosing to work on something, that what they choose to work on incorporates a comprehensive picture of Biblical direction (not avoiding the stuff they don't want to change), and that they understand Biblical direction and personal growth in Jesus alongside their local church.

Gateway Church has provided a foundational example of what I'm talking about in their Ways of Christ Resources. After working through an 80-page individual guide to the ways of Christ, participants set quarterly goals with the help of a self-assessment tool, and turn to the resource website as needed. For those wishing to do this with another individual or a group, Gateway lists some simple "Running Partner" ground rules and discussion questions to be used each time they meet (recommended no less than monthly).

The Whiteboard Sessions is about the power of an idea in its raw, most conceptual form. One simple idea could forever change your life and ministry. We’ve invited 8 of the most inspiring leaders in ministry to share one compelling idea in just 30 minutes each. They come from different ministry circles and use a variety of methods, but they all have one thing in common: a love for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and a desire to see lost people reached. You will be stretched by their thinking and challenged by their insights. The very idea you resist could be the key to God’s future for you. Who knows, you might even find confirmation for the dream God’s already revealed to you. But whatever the reaction, one thing is certain: you will never be the same.

Describe your emerging Church:

I will use Nexus as my church and share what we want our congregation to be as a part of Christ's Church:

First, we believe that Jesus is the Son of God, He lived a life of Love and healing in order that he could love us further by dying to bring us into salvation with God the Father. Jesus is the reason and the purpose of Nexus. We aim to imitate him, to best bring people in our context to Him.

We at Nexus feel we have been called to show God's Love to the poor, and as a Church, to be among them, serving them. We feel that members of our congregation should be ministers to those around them. We believe as Burke and Ward that if our theology debates do not help to heal a broken and hurting world, than they are quite useless. With that in mind we try to hold onto a theology that is relevant and meaningful to the hurting around us. I think that many of us would agree that if we are not aiding in bringing healing to the world than we are useless and we have no business calling ourselves a Church. Our main concern is to bring Life to a sick and dying world.

One way that we seek to do this is through community. Our Church has strong community with each other, we spend much of our time together, eating, resting, studying God's Word, working, worshiping, praying. We encourage each member to become active in planning and leading our worship services, or our small group studies. We are even beginning a small community home soon (with strong warnings from our parents and spending much time in prayer and meditation.) But community among ourselves is not our only goal. We have recently started a ministry designed to help us meet and see those who live in our neighborhood. We are hoping that we may get to know the people better and be provided with opportunities to care for them.

As a new Church made up of young Christians, we definitely hold to the humility aspect of the emerging Church. There are too many questions that our conclusion is “I don' t know.” We are becoming okay with that fact and we pray that our efforts will be blessed by God and will glorify Him despite all of our imperfections.

The theology of community is an important part of the emerging Church and effects the way that the Church functions as a whole. Church of the Apostles in Seattle has a strongly community oriented Church. Everyone in the community is asked to participate in worshiping, teaching, and just living life together. Even in Karen's chapter she did not use only her words, but also the words and ideas of others in her Church who participated in the blog. In the worship service many people contribute to the service with scripture readings, songs, poetry, or in other forms. In our visit to C.o.t.A. Karen herself did not speak until the end in closing to the service. Also the community shares life together. As a part of the Church, members at C.o.t.A. have the opportunity to live in community houses where they focus on specific aspects of living together as the Body of Christ. Each member adds something to the body of believers, in Bible study every interpretation is valuable because all are being guided by the Holy Spirit, and each person's understanding adds to the collective understanding of the Church.

Mars Hill also values community, but it is less important in relation to the theology of Scripture. Each member of the community is expected to become an active member of the Body of Christ and to pick up responsibilities in the Church. However, community does not play such a large role as in C.o.t.A. when it comes to interpreting Scripture. Driscol holds Scripture much higher than community to the point that his sermon is broadcasted to every campus and unless you fit a very tight understanding of Scripture you are not allowed a leadership role in his church. This is a bit unnerving to me. It is as if Mark is saying “I am right, you are therefore, wrong.” It is hard for me to accept this almost cult-like idea of one (not Christ) head of their congregation. I cannot accept that one interpretation is better than all others, and most in the emerging Church will probably agree. This is one reason why Mark has chosen to no longer consider himself a member of the Emerging Church Movement.

No longer can we afford to stand on the cliffs high above the cultural mudslide, chastising people for not climbing out of the mess to come up to higher ground. No longer can we feel content throwing our heroic lifelines of propositions intended to save. No longer can we idly sit by, bemoaning change and wishing to turn to clock back to nostalgic days gone by.

No, it's time for Christian leaders, tethered to the lifeline of God's Spirit and community of faith, to gather up courage and plunge into the swirling mess of cultural flow. Just as Paul said he did in Corinth, we too must "try to find common ground with everyone so that [we] might bring them to Christ." We must emulate the God who dove right into the sewer of life himself in the body of Jesus. And we must awaken his dream - God's dream of swimming this rescue mission on earth through a new Body - the Body of his Church - Christ's Body re-presented.....This must be the first priority for leadership in a post-Christian world: making the invisible Body visible.

La Trek era stata messa in piedi in un capannone a Waterloo, nel Wisconsin, e "Dick" Burke ha fatto crescere l'azienda fino a divenire un marchio leader tra le biciclette di qualità negli Stati Uniti e nel mondo.
Two things happened last week to quietly kick off the presidential transition effort that will be in high gear come November. First, President Bush released his FY 2009 budget, which includes a $9 million funding request for the General Services Administration to operate the transition process.

But what does this entail?

It means effective pre-election planning for the 77-day post-election transition period. Some academics, including Martha Kumar, describe the post-election transition period as a “freight train.” Actions include: picking top White House staff – not cabinet officials – first; avoiding any constraining commitments; learning from outgoing predecessors; creating a decision-making process for policy and personnel sections; and developing a strategic agenda for policy proposals.

I decided to end my reading slump by re-reading the Anita Blake books. First thing: these books are definitely gory. You don't really wanna read them if you have a vivid imagination and a weak stomach.

The story begins with Anita and Bert going to visit Harold Gaynor. HG wants Anita to raise a very old corpse, which will require a human sacrifice. Anita says no and even Bert the Greedy draws the line at a human sacrifice.

Then Anita gets a call from Dolph. A family has been mutilated and eaten, by what no one knew. Anita thinks it's a zombie but doesn't really understand how it's possible for a couple of reasons: 1) they don't eat, let alone humans and 2) they usually stay near a grave and this zombie is far away from a cemetary. They try to figure out who could have done it and Anita comes up with several names: Manny Rodriguez (her friend), Peter Burke (who is dead), herself and Dominga Salvador, the local vaudun priestess. She gets Manny to arrange a meeting with DS.

At their meeting, DS assesses Anita's skills and wonders why Anita wasn't a vaundun priestess. DS agrees to help them if Anita submits to some "tests." Anita agrees but at one point she ticks off DS and so, DS sends 2 zombies to try to kill her. They come into her apartment while she is sleeping and she shoots them to bits. Well, her and some police the neighbors were kind enough to call when they heard shots.

Gaynor continues to harass Anita - or rather to send his man Bruno and Tommy to do it. She still says no to raising that corpse since it requires a human sacrifice.

There isn't much Jean-Claude in this story. He pops up nearly incidentally.

There are more murders and we meet Detective Clive Perry. Also in this book is Charles and Jameson, both fellow animators who work with Anita. Oh, and Irving. I can't remember if Irving was in the first book. Irving is a werewolf and a reporter. He keeps his werewolf-ness quiet because of discrimination. He gets an interview with JC which makes him happy as a clam to have an exclusive interview with the Master of the City.

In the end, Anita has to kill two men because they are about to kill someone else. When she does that, she has enough power to call all the dead in the cemetary where they are. They kill the men, kill HG and kill DS.

These books are funny sometimes and I meant to find this one funny bit to put here just in case someone else actually reads this but I've lost it, more's the pity. You'll just have to take my word for it. Or read them yourself. That would work as well.

These tales are not about ghosts: not really, not ghosts pure and simple. They are not crime stories, or gruesome stories: well .... not All of them. They tell of ordinary people in an everyday world, people you may know, people you may recognize.

So what is there to be uneasy about?

Rosemary Timperley - Double Wedding
Miles Tripp - Commuter
George Mackay Brown - Two Horses, Rose And Terror
Barry Sutton - Jane Howard, Where Are You Now?
Elizabeth Walter - The Hollies And The Ivy
Stephen Meadows - It Had Happened Before
Charles Eric Maine - Joe Three Eyes
Jay Gilbert - Out Of Reason
Philip Evans - Tale-Telling
Peter Collins - Absence Without Leave
R. M. Stephenson - Janet
Michael Cornish - Mr. Gupta's Marionettes
R. Andrew Hall - Autumn's Dream
Keith Turner - Little Jimmy
Brian Morse - About Ghosts
John Burke - And Cannot Come Again

Third and final book in the series.

Elizabeth Walter - The Hollies And The Ivy: Gus and Judith Pentecost move into The Hollies, previously owned by old Mrs. Dyer whose husband vanished, presumed murdered by wife although no body was ever recovered. From the first, Gus fights a losing battle versus the unruly ivy which clings to the walls and taps on the windows at night. Come Christmas, and they're entombed by the fist-thick roots. Another cracker for the Vegetation! thread.

Miles Tripp - Commuter: For forty years, Sidney Hinds reflects, he's commuted to his dull job analysing unemployment figures before returning home to his joyless marriage. But today the station is deserted, the train doesn't arrive, and so he has no option but to return home and be nagged by Mabel for getting "under her feet" .... just as he has every day for years since he took an axe to her. Today, in a rare moment of clarity, Sidney realises he's no reason to stay at the gloomy bungalow any longer, so he has a last hack at the corpse, packs some provisions and sets up camp in the waiting room of the obsolete station. When two youths break in, he defends his property entirely oblivious to the express train belting along the rails ...

Stephen Meadows - It Had Happened Before: Short-short. Another bitter marriage with every day, every excuse for a conversation a repetition of one that has gone before. Husband takes out the iron and creeps up on wife as she's watching TV.

Philip Evans - Tale-Telling: Contract killer in the confessional box. The previous night he committed his first murder for non-financial gain, shooting a beautiful woman he'd just picked up and made love to, Rosa Selvaggio, and he can't explain why. He's even more at a loss as to why she merely laughed as bullet after bullet sank into her without having any effect whatsoever. She appears behind her killer in the box, as does the Priest. He's mighty odd, too.

Dell Shannon - The Practical Joke

Not the first book I've got rid of and later wondered what the Hell I was playing at. The first of Burke's three Unease collections. Here are a few tasters:

Brian Aldiss - A Pleasure Shared: "Public houses are the inventions of the devil, Mrs. Meacher". A Saint in his own mind, Mr. Cream is fastidious to a fault due to his strict upbringing and there's not a day goes by he doesn't thank his parents for instilling in him a strong streak of self-discipline. Indeed, loose women so annoy him that he invites them back to his lodgings for a damn good throttling. When Flossie Meacher stabs a fellow tenant after he makes drunken advances toward her, she turns to Cream to help her dispose of the body, pointing out that she's just seen Miss Colgrave's corpse propped up in his room.

John Marsh - The Appointment: After squandering his inheritance on gambling, a man on the verge of suicide receives tomorrow's newspaper from a mysterious figure at the tube station. Over the following months he accumulates a fortune but then, on the eve of his wedding to his long term girlfriend, he buys his customary newspaper from the stranger, only to be confronted with the screaming headline Bridegroom Dies In Sleep. He narrates his story while desperately trying to stay awake.

Jeffry Scott - Out of the Country: short-short in which Mr. Bullivant makes good his promise to smuggle a murderer across the sea - ground up in a hundred tins of dog food!

Alex Hamilton - End of the Road: Disorientated driver Henry winds up taking his nagging wife and sister through the windscreen.

Joan Fleming - Gone is Gone: The ghostly voice of Clowd over the telephone shortly after his funeral is too much for the scheming Comfort to take. For years he's hated the man who was his partner in the antique shop because he would always outsmart him. Now, just as he's about to cheat Clowd's wife out of her estate, Comfort is turned over again - by a gramophone record.

Andrea Newman - Such A Good Idea: The narrator locks her husband in his study on a whim, wondering how long it will take him to realise. The situation escalates from the moment he does ....

Dell Shannon - The Practical Joke: Griffith's has written a book scoffing at all things supernatural, and his friends decide to put his scepticism to the test. When the quiet Welshman takes a holiday cottage in a remote Somerset village, they rope in some locals to give him the full Blair Witch Project experience, unaware that the place is only empty in the first place due to its previous owner being an old creep who got his kicks from torturing small animals.See the Vault Of Evil Tales Of Unease thread.
