WE HAVE TO MAKE ROOM FOR SCARLETT!

Ouch: After starlet Scarlett Johnasson, clearly crushing hard

WE HAVE TO MAKE ROOM FOR SCARLETT!

Ouch: After starlet Scarlett Johnasson, clearly crushing hard, gushed to Politico earlier this month about her lengthy email dialog with Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential candidate felt obliged to set the record straight about his connection with ScarJo. What's their status? In A Relationship? It's Complicated? Actually, they are JUST FRIENDS OMG WTF, Obama told reporters on his plane:

Obama said the actress doesn't have his personal email address. "She sent one email to Reggie, who forwarded it to me," Obama said, referring to his 26-year-old personal assistant, Reggie Love. "I write saying, 'thank you Scarlett for doing what you do,' and suddenly we have this email relationship"
One day, a hot politician is happy to engage in "thoughtful... back-and-forth correspondence," and the next he's denying that it means anything at all. Johansson's heart is so breaking. Oh, sweetie, this little tactic is called "moving to the center," and all powerful men do it once they've gotten what they want from their "base." By the time the inauguration comes, you'll have turned your heartache into a gratuitously overproduced hit record and forgotten all about this sad little e-incident.

So the Wimbledon draws were made this morning (which I liveblogged earlier), and now it’s time

So the Wimbledon draws were made this morning (which I liveblogged earlier), and now it's time to obsessively comb through each minute detail and possibility - hooray! By now you probably know that Novak Djokovic ended up in Federer's half, leading to a possible final where Roger can try to shut the Djoker's mouth once and for all, what with all the trash Djoko's been talking lately. Perhaps Fed can also tell Nole's parents to be quiet once again, just for old times sake. *rubs hands together excitedly and nefariously*

Andy Roddick, meanwhile, got some help from the Draw Gods and made up for his (some say bogus) 6th seed by drawing 4th seed (which some say DickRod should be) Nikolay Davydenko in his quarter. This could lead to semifinal matchups of Federer vs. Djokovic and Nadal vs. Roddick, which most people feel would be quite dandy.

As for the ladies, consensus is that top-seed Ana Ivanovic got the easiest draw of all, with only Chakvetadze in her quarter being any real threat, although I think Dominika Cibulkova, Agnes Szavay and Patty Schnyder could provide problems along the way. If Ana gets to the semis, she'll most likely face either 4th-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova or 6th-seeded Serena Williams (assuming the seed projections hold up).

On the bottom half, we certainly find a lot more threats than in Ana's top half. Poor 2nd-seeded Jelena Jankovic could face 7th seed Venus Williams in the quarterfinals, and either third-seeded Maria Sharapova, 5th-seeded Elena Dementieva, or 9th-seeded Dinara Safina (who's been ON FIRE lately) if she even makes it to the semis. And, if you're the intuitive type, you may already have discerned that Dementieva and Safina are potential obstacles for Sharapova in her quarter.

But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves - draw projections are all fine and good (and I'll be doing them in my usual excruciating detail in later posts), for now I'd like to focus on the matches we already know to exist (aka the first round matches). 'Cause my god there are a lot good ones!

(Parenthetical program note: the sequence of my draw analyses for Wimbledon will go as follows: Part One (i.e. what you are reading right now) will focus on all the exquisite men's first rounds the Draw Gods have blessed us with. In Part Two, we'll get all reckless and start projecting and predicting from the second round through the finals on the men's side. Part Three will focus on intoxicating first and second rounds for the ladies, while Part Four will project and predict the draws on the women's side. So let's get out of these parentheses and get to it!)

Hereafter follows some very intriguing mens' first rounds, and why I find them such:

First Round, Top Half of Men's Draw:

Match: Top-seeded Swiss Roger Federer vs. 272nd-ranked Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty Why It's Intriguing: Hrbaty has a 2-0 lifetime record against Federer. That's right - Roger has faced this man twice and lost both times. Of course, both of those matches happened a lifetime ago (2000 and 2004) and neither were on grass (carpet and hard court, respectively). Plus, Hrbaty's been playing pretty awfully of late. Still, quite an interesting footnote to what is likely to be a Fed win (Hrbaty's never made it past the third round of Wimbledon, while Roger is going for his sixth title in a row - don't know if you've heard).

Match: 60th-ranked Frenchman Marc Gicquel vs. 105-ranked Kei Nishikori Why It's Intriguing: Don't let their rankings fool you. As of this writing, Gicquel is tearing through the tune-up tournament in the Netherlands, having beaten Richard Gasquet and Guillermo Canas on his way to the final. And Nishikori has already won a title this year at Delray Beach and was proclaimed by Rafael Nadal to be "definitely a Top Ten player" in the future, after the 18-year-old took a set from Rafa at Queens Club. This will be the first meeting between the two, and Nishikori's first appearance in a Grand Slam main draw.

Match: 79th-ranked up-and-supposedly-coming Australian Chris Guccione vs. 30th-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils Why It's Intriguing: The Gooch has been touted for years now as the next Aussie to take up where Lleyton Hewitt eventually leaves off, but has yet to fulfill his alleged potential. Monfils, meanwhile, was the junior champion-of-everything who seems to have finally arrived, making the semis of both the French Open (taking a set off of Federer) and this week's Nottingham tune-up tournament (where, incidentally, he beat Guccione in the first round 7-6 6-4 in the first round. Rematch alert!). With the Aussie's serve and volley aggression and Monfils' twelve-feet-behind-the-baseline defense, this should also be a good aesthetic mix of playing styles.

Match: 14th-seeded Extra-Spicy Chilean Fernando Gonzalez vs. 58th-ranked American Robby Ginepri Why It's Intriguing: Rematch alert! These two played in the first round last year, with Gonzo pulling out the match 3-6 7-6 6-2 6-2. And Gonzo also beat him in the Round of 16 at this year's French Open 7-6 6-3 6-1. Although Fernando has a 4-0 career edge against Robby Balboa (2-0 on grass), the American Philanthropist (according to Justin Gimelslob) has been having a great year of late. Perhaps this is his chance to exact some revenge against the Extra-Spicy Chilean?

Match: 22nd-seeded Recently-Naked Spaniard Fernando Verdasco vs. 36th-ranked Delightfully-Girly German Philipp Kohlschreiber Why It's Intriguing: One of the most dangerous floaters in the draw, Kohli just missed out on being seeded himself and has actually beaten Verdasco both times they've played (in 2006 on clay and hard courts). Philippppppp is also riding high from a finals appearance in Halle (Holla!), his previous tournament on grass (two weeks ago), while Verdasco might be a bit fatigued from his own finals run in Nottingham (just two days before Wimbledon begins). Look for the German to take this match in what will be called an upset, but wouldn't really be too much of one.

Match: 32nd-seeded Frenchman Michael Llodra vs. 43rd-ranked Large Croat Lawyer Mario Ancic Why It's Intriguing: Well, to start with, Super Mario has beaten Lllllodra both times they've played (albeit in 2002 and 2005, on carpet and grass respectively). The man some call "Baby Fed", Ancic was also ranked #7 in the world two years ago at this time, and has been coming back nicely from an 8-month struggle with mono. Mario is also a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist and semifinalist. This is a very similar dynamic to the previously-described Kohlschreiber/Verdasco matchup, and - as in that one - I expect the lower-ranked man to take the match.

Match: 21st-seeded Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero vs. 42nd-ranked Somewhat Large American Sam Querrey Why It's Intriguing: This might be a close one, even though Ferrero made the quarterfinals at the 'don last year, beating hard-serving James Blake and Janko Tipsarevic before losing to Roger Federer (but taking a set off the eventual champ) and Querrey has never made the second round (to be fair, this is only his second chance). The two have never met, and Querrey is another who is considered a "dangerous floater" in the draw (and if this draw were a pool, it would have been quarantined already, there's so many dangerous floaters in it). Ferrero, meanwhile, hasn't played since the French Open in May. Still, I give the slight edge to the Spaniard in this one.

Match: 10th-seeded Cheerful Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis vs. 52nd-ranked Belgian Butters Steve Darcis Why It's Intriguing: The usually-cheery Baghdatis (who should be happy given his fifteen-spot boost from the seeding formula - his world ranking is actually 25) hasn't played much this year due to injuries and personal problems. A quarterfinalist and a semifinalist the past two years at Wimbledon, Marcos just had a fairly good showing in Halle (Holla!) where he reached the quarterfinals before losing to Federer. The Belgian Darcis (who, when his hair is poofy on top, resembles Butters from South Park) has seen his ranking trajectory move steadily and swiftly upwards the past two years (from 485 at the beginning of last year) and prefers a faster court. If Baghdatis is healthy, he should pull through, but it could get a little interesting.

Match: 68th-ranked Swede Thomas Johansson vs. 111th-ranked (C)Rapping American Vince Spadea Why It's Intriguing: Rematch alert! Actually: Anniversary alert! These two played each other TEN YEARS AGO at Wimbledon, with Johansson prevailing 7-5 6-1 6-3. Overall, the Swede has a 3-2 edge in their lifetime playing relationship, but Spadea won their most recent match on carpet in '07, 7-6 6-2. This is Spadea's 13 straight Wimbledon (although, as I like to say, a couple of them have actually been bi-curious), and he was one of the last players to receive direct entry into the tournament. He's made it to the 4th round once (in '04), but usually loses in the first or second round. Johansson's had consistently better Wimbledonian results, making the semis in '05, although he has lost in the first round the past two years.

Match: 67th-ranked Brazilian Bomber Thomaz Bellucci vs. 78th-ranked Russian Igor Kunitsyn Why It's Intriguing: Earlier this year, Kunitsyn was the one who put an end to Bellucci's 17-match winning streak on the the Challenger circuit, blowing out the Brazilian 6-4 6-2 on clay in their only previous meeting. But the grass should favor the big-serving Bellucci, who - as you may recall - gave Nadal his toughest set in this year's French Open. Grudge match!

Match: 7th-seeded Argentine David Nalbandian vs. 98th-ranked Canadian Frank "So Ya Think You Can" Dancevic (Berman alert!) Why It's Intriguing: Wait for it... Rematch alert! These two met here last year in the second round, with Nalby prevailing 6-2 6-3 5-7 6-3. Also, Dancevic is cute cute cute! *swoons*

First Round, Bottom Half of Men's Draw

Match: 6th-seeded American Andy "DickRod" Roddick vs. 61st-ranked Argentine Eduardo Sch-WANK! Why It's Intriguing: Senor Schwank, like Tomaz Bellucci, also had a 17-match winning streak this year, ending at the French Open when he lost to Paul-Henri Mathieu after beating both Carlos Moya and Marcel Granollers. Though those 17 wins all came on clay, his game translated nicely to grass earlier this week as he gave Nottingham 7th-seed Andreas Seppi a tough test in the second round before falling 1-6 6-4 6-7 (7). I'm expecting Roddick - a two-time Wimbledon finalist - to pull through for sure, but I also think there could be some bumps in the road here.

Match: 25th-seeded Russian Adonis Dmitry Tursunov vs. 57th-ranked French Shermanator Nicolas Mahut Why It's Intriguing: The Shermanator is a great grass court player - in fact, grass is the only surface on which he has a winning record in his career. He's reached the second and third round in his two Wimbledonian appearances. Tursunov, meanwhile, has been a chronic underachiever who - while always making at least the third round in his four previous go rounds at The Championships - has had spottier recent results than Mahut has. This one's a toss up, in my book.

Match: 24th-seeded "Friendly Finn" Jarko Nieminen vs. 89th-ranked "American Nadal" Wayne Odesnik Why It's Intriguing: Though Nieminen was once a Wimbledon quarterfinalist two years ago, Jarkko has a 4-13 record in his last 17 ATP matches. And while Odesnik has a clay-courter style and no real grass record to speak of, the self-styled "American Nadal" has been having much more success of late. Before his crisis of confidence, I would have said the "Friendly Finn" (as he's known on tour) would take this match easily. But now I'm not so sure. All I know is: he needs it, and I'm rooting for him.

Match: 26th-seeded Large Croat Ivan Ljubicic vs. 82nd-ranked Austrian Jurgen Melzer Why It's Intriguing: Rematch alert! These two have met only once, and it was at the 2005 Wimbledon, where a then-ranked 37th Melzer beat a then-ranked 14th Ljubicic 6-4 6-4 6-4. Could another bigger upset be in the works three years later? Don't count on it.

Match: 88th-ranked Donald Young vs. 138th-ranked Jesse Levine Why It's Intriguing: Of the two promising young juniors, much has been expected of Young through the years (who won the junior boys' title here), while Levine is often better known as "Roger Federer's practice partner." These two have met three times, all in 2007 on hard court, with Young holding a 2-1 edge. Levine won the most recent of their encounters, however, 7-6 (4) 7-6 (4) in Champaign, Illinois.

Match: 101st-ranked Swedish veteran Jonas Bjorkman vs. 117th-ranked French veteran Arnaud Clement Why It's Intriguing: Sweatin' With the Oldies! The 30-year-old Clement holds a 3-1 lifetime lead over the 36-year-old Bjorkman, including their last three matchups (the most recent on grass, a 6-2 6-4 whooping in Nottingham last year). That said, Jonas has a far superior Wimbledon record, making it to the fourth round last year and the semifinals the year before that (he also made the quarters in '03). Arnaud, meanwhile, has lost in the first or second round the past five years. It'll be interesting to see who prevails.

Match: 8th-seeded French Flack Richard Gasquet vs. 39th-ranked American A-hole Mardy Fish Why It's Intriguing: Fish is another one of them damned floaters. Now, usually when a Fish is floating, it means it's dead, but in this case the American is alive and dangerous. Gasquet's troubles this year have been well-chronicled, and Fish has easily had a better year and better recent results on grass. Still and all, Gasquet is last year's Wimbledon semifinalist and Fish has never made it past the 3rd round. I'm expecting Fish to give Gasquet fits in this one (not that Reeeeshard needs any help with that).

Match: 12-seeded Snottish Scottish Andy Murray vs. 53rd-ranked French Magician Fabrice Santoro Why It's Intriguing: Well, no one's really expecting Santoro to give Murray much of a match here - Snotty Scotty beat Fabrice 6-4 6-2 last year on hard courts, which was their only meeting. Nay, this match is notable merely because Santoro - sensing this will probably be his last year - has never played on Centre Court in his long and hallowed career at Wimbledon and requested to the tournament organizers that he be scheduled there. Now, by drawing Murray in the first round, the Magician will certainly get his wish.

Match: 27th-seeded German Nicolas Kiefer vs. 44th-ranked Frenchman Julien Benneteau Why It's Intriguing: Rematch alert! Their only meeting was in the first round of the 2005 Wimbledon, where Kiefer won in a five-set thriller 6-3 7-6 (5) 5-7 3-6 6-4. Both players have posted very good results lately, and the winner will likely sail through to a possible third-round meeting with Rafael Nadal (if poor Rafa makes it through his second round, that is, where he'll meet the winner of...)

Match: 48th-ranked Latvian The Multiple Ernests Gulbis vs. 84th-ranked American "Grandpa" John Isner Why It's Intriguing: Saving the best for last, here. Before the draw was made, everyone was wondering where these two potential upset-machines would end up, and who would they terrorize? Turns out they have to face and terrorize each other! The 6'9'' Isner and the Multiple Ernests have never played one another before, and this should be THE marquee matchup amongst the unseeded. Expect the winner to give all kinds of headaches to Rafa Nadal in the next round.

And thus concludeth the positively Shakespearian (in length, perhaps) Part One of my Wimbledon draw analysis series. What - you wanted more? Don't worry - there are three more parts coming up soon! God help you all.

OK, then. After yesterday’s previewing mishaps, I’ve decided to revamp the Court In Se

OK, then. After yesterday's previewing mishaps, I've decided to revamp the Court In Session column into a new, sleek and ass-covering format. Here's the deal: I'm gonna tell you about all the intriguing matchups on today's pro tennis slate, but I'm also gonna tell you why I think they'll be intriguing.

This awesome format feature comes equipped with many user-friendly aspects for you, the column reader. For instance, you get a glimpse into the inner workings of my tennis mind (scary! proceed with caution!). Also, you get to decide whether you too are intrigued, and - if you are - whether it's for the same reason or a different one that you can personalize yourself.

The payoff for me is: you can't blame me as much when the matches blow. 'Cause maybe "compelling tennis" isn't why I found these matches interesting in the first place, sucka! Nyah to the nyah. Anyway, enough with the previewing the preview column - let's put this awesome new ground-breaking format to work right now:

Nottingham - Slazenger Open

Match: 4th-seeded Extra Large Croat Ivo Karlovic vs. 42nd-ranked Somewhat Also Large American Sam Querrey. Why It's Intriguing: Um, do you like tiebreaks?

Match: 5th-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon vs. Mysterious Melbournian Mammal Samuel Groth Why It's Intriguing: It's the Australian Groth! One of the most dangerous and little-known racquet-wielding bipeds on the planet! If you've been following this blog faithfully like you know you should, you've seen this 308th-ranked floater knock off one unsuspecting target after another, starting with second-best Serb Janko Tipsarevic. And he's been acing his Aussie arse off in every match. Expect Simon to not know what hit him. Because, frankly, neither do we.

Match: 8th-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils vs. 44th-ranked Frenchman Julien Benneteau. Why It's Intriguing: Friends! Countrymen! Lovers? Eh, probably not. But Benneteau's had some good results of late - he was one of the Fabulous French Five that made the Round of 16 at the French Open. Monfils, of course, did him two rounds better there, making the semis. And seriously: do you really have to ask why this match is intriguing? ANY match Gael plays is intriguing by its very nature, you heretic!

Match: 7th-seeded Italian Andreas Seppi vs. 61st-ranked Argentine Eduardo Schwank. Why It's Intriguing: Schwank made his tour breakthrough at the French, beating Carlos Moya in the first round before losing to Paul-Henri Mathieu in the third. Plus, he had won three consecutive clay court challenger tournaments before that. It'll be interesting to see how Mr. Schwank's game and recent hot streak (he's won 18 of his last 19 matches) translates onto grass against a solid opponent.

Match: 3rd-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco vs. unseeded American Bobby Reynolds. Why It's Intriguing: Bobby Reynolds is "spurred by love" these days (according to Justin Gimelslob) and Verdasco recently posed naked. Will this lead to fireworks on the court?

Match: Top-seeded Czech Radek Stepanek vs. unseeded American (C)Rapper Vince Spadea. Why It's Intriguing: See how many games Vince can win! I bet it's fewer than the dope rhymes he can come up with for "Czech", "Radek" and "Stepanek".

Match: 68th-ranked Swede Thomas Johansson vs. Nobody. Why It's Intriguing: The "Nobody" is erstwhile 6th-seed Dmitry Tursunov, who got kicked out of the tournament by The Sherrifs Supervisor of Nottingham for being a baby and walking out of his doubles match. Johansson advances to the quarterfinals having played only one set of tennis (his previous opponent, Kei Nishikori, retired in that match).

Netherlands - The Ordina Open

Match: 4th-seeded Large Croat Ivan Ljubicic vs. 100th-ranked Serb Viktor Troicki. Why It's Intriguing: Troicki's been playing well of late, backdrafting behind all the recent Serbian success, and is much more dangerous than his ranking indicates.

Match: 7th-seeded Katarina Srebotnik vs. 74th-ranked lucky loser Yung-Jan Chan. Why It's Intriguing: Like Troicki, Yung-Jan is an up-and-comer who has had some good results lately. Expect Srebotnik to have her hands full (she is holding a racquet, after all). In addition, it's just fun to say "Yung-Jan Chan". Say it out loud a couple of times, with some gusto, and see if it doesn't improve the quality of your day.

Match: Unseeded American Ashley Sparklepuss vs. unseeded Thailandian Tamarine Tanasugarn. Why It's Intriguing: Haven't you heard? Harkleroad's posing for Playboy! *yawns*

The Witches of Eastborne

Match: Top-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova vs. 32nd-ranked Dane Caroline Wozniacki. Why It's Intriguing: Wozniacki has been playing like a maniacki lately, and I wouldn't be surprised if she gave SKuzzy some trouble. Plus, it's just fun to say "Wozniacki". Say it out loud a couple of times, with some gusto, and see if it doesn't improve the quality of your day.

Match: Unseeded Australian Samantha Stosur vs. unseeded Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo. Why It's Intriguing: Mauresmo's careeer has been on the decline, with talk of imminent retirement in the air. Which is what makes her first-round win against 6th-seeded countrywoman Alize Cornet, and her talk of feeling comfortable again on grass, all the more interesting. Stosur is experiencing a comeback on a much larger scale, returning for the ravages of Lyme Disease. This match has "human interest story" written all over it, and the tennis shouldn't be bad either.

Well, that's all for now, chickadees. There are probably some more good matches that I'm overlooking, but I just got tired of writing, so you'll have to find those matches on your own. I have confidence in you, my doves! Oh, and for those of you who are wondering (which is no one), I'm doing a separate post on the qualifying at Wimbledon. So keep your eye on the intertubes, as that will be floating by sometime soon.

Hey, all you sassy literates out there - you know what’s fun for me to do at the end of each d

Hey, all you sassy literates out there - you know what's fun for me to do at the end of each day? (And please don't guess, 'cause I'm about to tell you; and if I know you like I think I do, then your guess is likely to be naughty and will make me blush). I like to read my morning previews when that day's play is completed so I can see what a knob I've proven to be insofar as inaccuracies, bad predictions, etc. Today I thought it might be amusing to let you in on the process - so let's break it down together, shall we? All right - come along, then. I'll save a place for you in the next paragraph.

Oh, there you are. I thought you'd never show up. I was ready to give your place away and everything. Anywho, this morning, I wrote the following about Nottingham:

So about those interesting matches? Well, how about Stepanek/Isner, Monfils/Guccione, Simon/Young, Nishikori/T. Johansson, and - dare I say - even Llodra/Schwank? (There. I said it).

So how did those allegedly interesting matches turn out? Well, Radek the CzechWorm beat down Grandpa Isner 6-3 6-2 in 49 minutes and 30 seconds. Interesting! This result might be why some searching soul out there found this blog today by typing "john isner sucks" in a search engine. While I'm not 100% sure about that sentiment, I will say that tourfolk seem to be less cowed by the 6'9'' American's serve these days. Stepanek broke Isner 3 times on 3 chances, and the Super-Sized UGA grad only won 65% of his first serves and 33% of his second. Is the magic waning for Isner, or did Wormy just play the match of his life? Well, as I sometimes like to say: we all can tell time, but time usually tells us more. (Isn't that so very clever?)

And speaking of waning magic (which I believe I just was), the heretofore fantasmagorical journey of Japanese teen feller (and Rafa Nadal-impresser) Kei Nishikori vanished in the poof of an abdominal strain, as the Delray Beach champion had to retire in his match against Thomas Johansson (who himself won the Nottingham title in 2001) after losing the first set 7-5. Let's hope this exciting young player is feeling better by the time Wimbledon rolls around.

Gilles Simon/Donald Young? Over in 48 minutes and 51 seconds - so fast you could've watched the whole match and then ran over to catch the last 39 seconds of the Stepanek/Isner match! Oh, you wanna know the result too? Don't be so shallow: it's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game! And Donald Young played it poorly, losing his 4th straight ATP match 6-1 6-4. I don't know why I continue to think that Young will get a good result. Methinks it's time for me to relegate him to the realm of the up-and-supposed-comer.

And speak of the devil! Up-and-supposedly-coming Aussie Chris Guccione lost to Gael Monfils in straight sets, 7-6 (4) 6-4. This is Monfils' first tournament back since his inspired run in the French Open. And be advised: the second that his girlfriend Dominika Cibulkova - who withdrew from her tourney in Holland - is spotted in Nottingham, I am going to start referring to the Frenchman as "The Sheriff of Snoggingham". Let us all hope it does not come to that.

So what's the tally so far? Four "interesting match" predictions, and zero actually interesting matches. Why do you people read this crap?! Let's hope the last prediction is right on.

And what was the last prediction again? Llodra/Schwank?! Pfffffft. Llodra didn't even PLAY Schwank, let alone be interesting in doing it. Llodra withdrew, leaving the all-too-compelling matchup of the Schwanky Argentine against the 306th-ranked Dane Frederik Nielson. Schwank took the match in easy straights (as opposed to dire ones) 6-3 6-3. He will face seventh-seeded Italian Andreas Seppi in the next round.

To be fair to myself, none of the nine Nottingham matches went three sets today. To be unfair to myself, the only two things that happened today and are really worth noting are things I didn't mention at all in my preview. Namely: Sam Groth. He is a thing that is happening! The Australian Groth - that dangerous Melbournian mammal - came through and dispatched the less dangerous British biped Jamie Baker 7-6 (7) 6-3, serving 20 aces against three double faults and winning 89% of first serve points and 72% of second serve points. Look out Gilles Simon - the ever dangerous Australian Groth is on the prowl, and he's coming your way.

And finally, it turns out that the only way to get an Englishman into the second round at Nottingham is to have two of them play one another in the first round. Such was the case as Alex Bogdanovic beat pasty countryman James Ward 6-3 6-4. The 271st-ranked Bogdanovic will now be obliterated in the second round by Marin Cilic.

Moving on to that grassy aroma emanating from the lowlands, here's what I had to say about the Ordina Open this morning:

Still to play in the Netherlands: Andreev/Melzer, Ancic/Darcis, Safina/Pin, and A.Bondarenko/Erakovic.

I mentioned these matches in particular because I presumed them to be interesting. So how'd I do?

Well, now. Ancic beat Darcis 6-2 6-4, but the match did go almost one hour and eighteen minutes, so that's something right? Plus, I only said it was interesting because I think Darcis' puff of hair (does he still have that?) makes him look like Butters from South Park. Not that I thought the match would be, you know, COMPELLING or anything. Also, the darling of the clay court season, French Open finalist Dinara Safina destroyed Frenchwoman Camille Pin, 6-4 6-1. Not so noteworthy, there.

But Jurgen Melzer did come through and pull an upset over Jeff Spicoli-lookalike Igor Andreev, aka The Fifth Seed, 6-4 1-6 6-1. Also, A-Bond and The Warrin' Erakovic dueled quite closely before the oldest of the eighteen Bondarenko sisters prevailed 6-4 3-6 6-3. So I came through on about half of those predictions. And only half of those people who planned their days around them came away disappointed.

Of course, I completely failed to anticipate the most dramatic Ordinal match of the day, and I kinda shoulda known that unseeded German Angelique Kerber would force second-seeded Anna Chakvetadze to a third set tiebreak before losing 6-3 3-6 7-6 (1). My bad.

Finally, we move to the women's tournament in Eastborne - what idiotic things did I envision happening there? Let's take a look at this morning's prognosticatory paragraph:

Meanwhile, amongst the Women of Eastborne (not to be confused with the Witches of Eastwick) (or, maybe just a little), there are a couple of matches worth expending a few anticipatory keystrokes about. Namely, Vaidisova/Govortsova, Petrova/Na Li, Pironkova/Wozniacki, and some lady named Lindsay Davenport against Virginie Razzano.

So what happened? Well, that lady named Lindsay Davenport pulled a Llodra and didn't even PLAY, withdrawing from the tourney due to a right knee injury sustained in a practice over the weekend. She hopes to be well by the time Wimbledon rolls around, and I share that sentiment. Meanwhile, she was replaced by Estonian French Open quarterfinalist Kaia Kanepi, who was roundly beaten (not trapezoidally beaten, mind you - the beating was quite spherical in nature) by the 28th-ranked Frenchwoman Razzano 6-3 6-4.

So nice job there, Nostradamus. Meanwhile 32th-ranked Dane Caroline Wozniacki laid the graphite composite on the 40th-ranked Pironkova 6-3 6-2. BORing. 7th-seeded Nicole Vaidisova took her predictable nosedive as Govortsova beat her 6-2 6-4. Vaidisova will now be able to go snuggle with the Worm all she wants, but for reasons not many can discern.

Which leaves us with the 8th-seeded Petrova against the unseeded but dangerous floater Na Li. And this looks like it was actually a pretty good match, with Petrova prevailing 6-2 6-7 (5) 6-3 in just under two hours. You're WELCOME.

Well, I'm pretty sure I've now illustrated in great detail (probably too great for my friend at tennisnakama!) how gravely important and vital my preview columns can be every morning. So make sure not to miss tomorrow's edition, when I hype another slew of matchups that either don't happen or mostly suck.

There are a lot of interesting matches on the docket today. But first I must relay the sad news

There are a lot of interesting matches on the docket today. But first I must relay the sad news that one of the eighteen Bondarenko sisters, Kateryna, has lost to Thailand terror Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-3 6-3, in one of the only completed matches thus far today at the Ordina Open in the Nether Netherlands. Despite Kateryna's 45 World Ranking, this is notable because K-Bond, of course, is coming off a grass court title having won the previous week's Birmingham tournament. She's also pretty durned handy on the green stuff, as a former Wimbledon girl's winner (in 2004, when she beat Ana Ivanovic). I guess the poor woman was just done tuckered out. Either way, it's a good win for the 85th-ranked 31-year-old, who no doubt with this victory has the entire world singing "Pour Some Tanasugarn On Me". Indeed.

Also in Holland (Holla!), French Flake Richard Gasquet - 2nd seed at the Ordina Open - just lost to countryman Marc Gicquel 7-5 7-6 (6). It's Gasquet's first loss to his disrespectful elder in three matches. Interesting Side Note: If you were on Wheel of Fortune in France, and the category were "French Tennis Players", and you had G-blank-bank-Q-U-E-blank up on the board, you still couldn't be absolutely sure about the right answer. It's true! And frustrating! But you would deserve to lose, having guessed a "Q" before either "S" or "T". Stupid!

So about those interesting matches? Well, how about Stepanek/Isner, Monfils/Guccione, Simon/Young, Nishikori/T. Johansson, and - dare I say - even Llodra/Schwank? (There. I said it). And that's just in Nottingham, people!

Still to play in the Netherlands: Andreev/Melzer, Ancic/Darcis, Safina/Pin, and A.Bondarenko/Erakovic (that's right - this tournament is totally co-ed). And egad - I've just noticed that 6th-seeded Maria Kirilenko has lost to not-at-all-seeded 68th-ranked Romanian Sorana Cirstea. Kirilenko, as you no doubt recall, was the winner of last week's clay court tournament in Barcelona. Also, Belgian sensation Yanina Wickmayer, loser in the Birmingham final to K-Bond, has just withdrawn from the tournament, citing a right knee injury. So that has not gone unreported.

So, it's looking like a great day of tennis ahead, people! Try not to fuck it up.

Yes, yes, I know - while all eyes were on the riveting Queen's Club action this weekend (and Holla!), some sneaky bastards snuck off and did other interesting stuff in other tournaments. Can you believe the nerve of these people? They thought they could get away with it, but I am here to recount their exploits and bring the dark doings in places such as Nottingham, Eastborne, and the Netherlands to light! I, my friends, am a tennis crusader. And informational justice will be served.

In a previous wrap-up, I recounted the qualifying tourney demise of 40th-ranked brooding existentialist Janko Tipsarevic at the hands of 300th-ranked Australian Samuel Groth. Well the Australian Groth has proved a dangerous mammal indeed, going on to qualify for the main draw, where he will play another low-ranked mammal: 260th-ranked British biped Jamie Baker. All the best to both of them!

In other qualifying tourney news (don't click away!), recent Japanese sensation Kei Nishikori, who took a set off of eventual champion Rafael Nadal at Queens club, also made the Nottingham main draw where he will face my avatar, Thomas Johansson. And DTBM blog favorite Vince Spadea keeps chugging and (c)rapping along, winning his way through qualies and getting the opportunity to meet German Alexander Slabinsky at the big boys' table. Once at the table, however, Spadea should take great care, as the Slabinsky family is notorious for being amongst the most slovenly and ill-mannered in all of Gaul. My mother often cautioned me as a child: "Don't be such a Slabinsky." But I still kinda am. Oh well. Nice try anyway, mom! (pronunciation hint: in German, the short "a" sound is like an English short "o" as in "lob" or, perhaps, "slob").

In Nottingham news, almost every first round match is a good one. Two of the more dangerous unseeded players, the 44th-ranked Frenchman Julien Benneteau and 47th-ranked Italian Simone Bolelli, already squared off in a match that was surprisingly one-sided, with #44 creaming #47 by a score of 6-1 6-4. 2nd seeded Paul Henri Mathieu, who just beat Large Croat Marin Cilic in a tight match at Queens last week (6-3 3-6 6-4) faces him again this morning. Cilic has never beaten Mathieu in their three previous matchups, but all of their previous matches have gone three sets on three different surfaces (hard, grass, and clay).

American Bobby Reynolds, ranked 106, just took the first set off the 57th-ranked Shermanator, so we'll keep our eyes on that one. And 7th-seeded Italian Andreas Seppi is having a very constipated match with Dudi Sela right now - he's really struggling to squeeze this one out. We'll have full reports on these matches in our evening wrap-up.

In Nottingham matches still to come today: 4th-seeded Extra Large Croat Ivo Karlovic faces Swedish tour veteran Jonas Bjorkman, 42nd-ranked American Sam Querrey plays 104th-ranked Colombian Alejandro Falla (who actually beat Sam in last year's Wimbledon quite easily, 7-6 6-4 6-1), and tempestuous/hilarious Russian 6th seed Dmitry Tursunov plays 73rd-ranked Yen-Hsun "Skip To My" Lu (Berman alert!).

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, the men and women are cavorting together and getting up to God knows what. I can only monitor their tennis activities, unfortunately. I do find it interesting that Gael Monfils chose to play in Nottingham instead of (p)laying with his WTA beau Dominika Cibulkova in the lowlands. Then again, I just see here that Cibulkova has withdrawn from the Netherlands tourney, so maybe she's going to snog with Monfils in Nottingham. Or maybe there's trouble in paradise - who knows? All I know is that blogs are for rampant, reckless and irresponsibly unfounded speculation and rumor-mongering, so that's what I'm trying to do here. Is it working?

(And by the way I am only writing "'s Hertogenbosch" one time in this blog, and that is to tell you that I'm never typing it again in this blog. The dangling possessive really freaks me out. Here, the tournament shall be known as The Ordina Open, or "Holland" or "The Netherlands". Thank you for your kind consideration in this matter).

Anyway, 2nd-seeded French Flake Reeeshard Gasquet has already advanced over Little Belgian Olivier Rochus, 6-2 7-6 while eighth-seeded French Magician Fabrice Santoro has lost 6-3 6-1 to a resurgent Juan Martin Del Potro, who has been besieged by injuries of late.

On the ladies' side, Ashley Sparklepuss - no doubt bouyed by her imminent public nekkidity - upset 4th-seeded Italian Francesca Schiavone 6-3 6-4. 8th-seeded Alyona Bondarenko, whose sister just won the tournament in Birmingham and is also playing in Holland this week, beat the tough Czech Iveta Benesova 6-4 4-6 6-4. And Dinara Safina's co-founder of the "Little Sisters" support group, Michaella Krajicek scored a thrilling upset (of sorts), beating Ai Sugiyama 6-1 5-7 7-6 (7). When reached for a comment, Sugiyama said "Ai ai ai!" Except not really. Dinara, meanwhile, is scheduled to play later today against Pauline Parmentier.

Eastborne? Well, sure, I'll type a bit about that, but I gotta run so we'll look at it more in tonight's wrap-up. First and foremost, French Flake Amelie Mauresmo has shockingly returned to form and beaten New French Hope and 6th seed Alize Cornet 6-1 4-6 7-5. More details on that one to come!

Ouvi duas músicas do álbum dela(Anywhere I Lay My Head) e me bastou.
Ela tenta fazer um estilo meio Jazz, meio gótico sei-lá-o-quê. Não dá
pra saber o que ela quer. Meio desafinada também. Enfim, não é a toa
que a crítica tá pegando no pé dela.

Vejam só(traduções livres):

Scarlett Johansson was left at home in New York after a film studio refused to pay for the star's bloated demands to attend the Cannes Film Festival to launch Woody Allen's latest movie.

Penelope Cruz and Rebecca Hall, her co-stars in the film 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona', soaked up all the glory from crowds as they ascended the fabled red carpet of Cannes.

It must have been pretty galling for Johansson, 23, when reports trickled back to the U.S. about the ten minute standing ovation the film received Saturday night after the black-tie audience saw the film.

Scroll down for more...

Missing out: Scarlett Johansson missed out on all the praise at Cannes for her new movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona

It also stars Oscar-winner Javier Bardem, who couldn't make the film's gala for personal family reasons.

However, no one burst into tears because Johansson was absent.

"Nobody cared she wasn't there", snapped a prominent New York socialite as she noted, approvingly, that Cruz looked stunning in a low-cut gown designed by Marchesa while Hall, daughter of theatre legend Sir Peter Hall, was sparkling in a tumbling silk creation by Alberta Ferretti.

"The movie belonged to Penelope and Rebecca anyway with great help from Javier," the socialite added.

The French branch of Warner Brothers Films, distributors of Vicky Cristina Barcelona in France, had spent weeks negotiating with Johansson's representatives about flying her to Cannes.

They were willing, and happy, to pay for flights, hotel, provide a limousine, arrange for designers to show her gowns and for her to share hair and make-up designers with Cruz and Hall.

However, Johansson demanded her own exclusive make-up consultant at a cost of 5,000 Euros a day, which was felt a tad too much for a four day trip where looking after the star's tresses and powdering her nose would cost a total of 20,000 Euros.

Then there was the problem over an hotel.

The film's director and his leading ladies were delighted to be staying in the centre of Cannes to make it easier for them to attend screenings, public events and to do interviews for TV and press.

Johansson wanted to be at an hotel way out in the sticks, some 25 to 30 miles away.

"It was crazy. Penelope and Rebecca were going to be working very hard and it wasn't acceptable that Scarlett would be having to come in from that distance every day, most likely turning up late and it would have thrown schedules into a lot of confusion.

"Also, I think, while Woody's terribly fond of Scarlett, he was a little upset that she wasn't being a team player", an executive connected to the film told the Daily Mail.

"That said she has agreed to support the movie back in America and we're all delighted about that," the executive added.

The movie, about two American friends - Johansson and Hall - with different ideas about love who spend a summer at the Spanish coastal city of Barcelona where they meet an artist, played by Bardem, and his tempestuous ex-wife, played by Cruz.

It's great fun, and critics here have been hailing it as a return to sparkling form for Allen.

The film's two stars later changed their frocks and put on some Dolce and Gabbana to attend the extravagant Vanity Fair Cannes Party over at the Hotel Du Cap's Eden Roc restaurant over-looking the Mediterranean.

They mingled with the likes of Mick Jagger, his flame L'Wren Scott, Sean Penn, (who was seen chatting with wife Robin Wright Penn, reunited after an estrangement, and Petra Nemcova, a close "friend"), Lily Allen (on her best behaviour) a contingent from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull led by Harrison Ford, partner Calista Flockhart, Cate Blanchett, Karen Allen, Jim Broadbent, John Hurt, Ray Winstone, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Shia LaBeouf.

Then Will Smith, with wife Jada Pinkett Smith, pitched up with an entourage. There was dancing and much merriment way into the early hours of Sunday morning with after-after parties that went on till three and 4 a.m. yesterday.

Other stars at the swanky Vanity fair party included Joan Collins, Faye Dunaway, Joely Richardson and Natalie Portman.

A disfrutar!

Recurre a algo fácil, barato.
