If you are interviewing for a Web Developer position, you may want to read this post. Below are some likely job interview questions for a Web Developer job. The methods we used to develop these questions are the same ones we used as corporate HR in developing job interview questions for hiring managers. We have developed these questions by analyzing the core competencies or skills, job ad requirements and so forth.

Web Developer Jobs in Canada

6 Web Developer Job Interview Questions

Tell me a project in which you were responsible for responsible for maintaining, developing and optimizing external web sites and ecommerce components as well as maintaining and developing internal intranet applications?

How do you keep current of new web technology?

What is you experience with integrating the SQL Server database with the company website? What steps do you take?

Rate your experience level with the following and how you use them with your previous work experience:

Interwoven

Enterprise e-commerce/website development

ASP

.Net

VBScript

CSS

XML

XSL

JavaScript

Perl

PHP

Photoshop / Illustrator

Database knowledge specifically SQL Server or MySQL Web / Graphical Design skills

Flash / Action Script.

Describe a time when you worked closely with various development teams to develop cutting edge customized web based applications and conduct unit testing on completed codes. What was the size of the group? What was your primary role in the team?

Tell us about a time when you did not see eye to eye with another developer on a project. How did you resolve the issue and come to a resolution?

More About These Questions

The interview questions in this post assess the essential soft skills for his particular job through its core functions. We focus on the soft skills because we have found that most candidates handle the questions designed to assess their technical proficiency very well only to stumble with the questions designed to assess their soft skills. For example, when we ask a programmer to explain what a certain set of code means or how best to handle a coding issue, most often their answer is a good one. Now when we ask the same candidate to “describe a time when you did not get along well with a co-worker and how you handled it” to assess their interpersonal skills, 9 times out of 10 they stumble. We see the same thing over and over again whether we are hiring for an accountant, teacher, and so on. Most candidates can handle questions designed to assess their technical competencies much much better than questions designed to assess their soft skills

Why does soft skills matter? Because 9 times out of 10 applicants are bypassed due to their soft skills. We hear this all the time when we debrief with the hiring manager to get their feedback on the applicant. Sometimes, the hiring managers will directly state that the applicant lacked the soft skills but more often it will be phrased as “no connection with the applicant”, or “didn’t get a good feel about the applicant” or “don’t think the applicant would fit in well” and so on.

In addition to focusing on the soft skills we have incorporated behavioral based interview questions. We focus on behavioral based interview questions because they are very prevalent in the HR industry. Behavioral questions focus on assessing past behavior by asking you to provide an example or describe a situation that has happened in the past and what you did. So because of the reasons stated and others beyond the scope of this post, you will likely be asked these questions in your next job interview.

How to Answer

Your response really depends on exactly the type of interview question asked. While interviewing skills as a hiring manager or job applicant can be quite an in depth topic and beyond the scope of this post, we have provided a quick lesson on how you can improve your interview skills. We have chosen to briefly cover the behavioral question because this is where we see most people struggle.

To ensure that you provide good answers consistently we advise that you follow a structured approach when responding to behavioral type questions. Two effective techniques to use are “STAR” (situation, task, action, result) and “PAR” (problem, action, result). These techniques are very similar to one another, so for illustrative purposes, we will discuss the STAR method.

To use the STAR technique, simply describe each element in your interview answer. So with the star technique, begin by describing the situation. Here you want to quickly give context to the interviewer (where, when, etc). Next clearly describe your task, that is what were you tasked to do in this situation. Now it is time to describe the steps or action you took to complete your task. Lastly, describe the results that you achieved. Sounds simple right? Well it is simple, but the secret is to practice responding following this structure. By following structure, you will ensure that you provide complete answers and do not omit vital pieces of information. For more information see our articles and courses on interviewing skills.

The Questions Are In Your Resume

Remember that another good source of job interview questions is your resume. Hiring managers will ask you questions based on your resume. For some people it’s hard to recall what you did last week, let alone what you did at work a few years ago. So it pays to review your resume before you go to your job interview.

One of the things I get involved in occasionally is interviewing. I'm not particularly fond of it, but it's one of those necessary evils because what I've found (from bitter experience) is if you don't give them the time they deserve you only end up hiring someone you wish you hadn't and are then are faced with the really awful job of trying to find them something they can do (rather than the job you hired them for) or politely asking them to leave :-(

I'm also a firm believer of giving people an overview of the type of things they are going to be asked before they arrive, which is why I've always been happy to discuss interview questions with anyone that asks me as well as on-line because if they don't know their stuff a weeks worth of cramming isn't really going to help once you begin to scratch below the surface.

If they're expected to use an industry recognised tool as part of their new job, I find it useful to not only talk to them about the specifics of using the tool and the tool's features, but also the body of knowledge that surrounds that tool. If we take IBM Rational Functional Tester as an example (one of my favourite GUI level automated testing tool) it should make the distinction between the two types of questions obvious.

Specific IBM Rational Functional Tester Questions

Why would you use the RFT Proxy SDK?

If I have my test data in MS Excel, explain the steps required in RFT to create a data-driven test.

How do you version control your automated test scripts in RFT?

Explain the concept of the RFT Test Object Map. What are the benefits?

Can you give me an example of when you would use a Helper Superclass in RFT?

Which environments (technology domains) are supported by RFT?

What are the differences between the Data verification point and the Property verification point in RFT?

Which other IBM Rational tools does RFT integrate with?

How is Keyword-driven testing different from Data-driven testing. How does it work in RFT?

Explain to me the concept behind RFT ScriptAssure?

General GUI Test Automation Questions

(Applicable to any GUI test automation tool, like QuickTest Pro, WinRunner, SilkTest, Robot, TestComplete, etc, etc)

What is your defintion for "automated testing" / a "test automation tool" ?

Give me an example of a test that is likely to deliver a good ROI when automated

Give me an example of a test that is likely to deliver a poor ROI when automated

Which other tools have you used to complement IBM Rational Functional Tester?

What are the benefits of using the "recorder" feature of a GUI level test automation tool?

What are the potentials pitfalls of using the "recorder" feature of a GUI level test automation tool?

When is the best time to start creating automated test scripts on a project?

Would you run a test manually before you automated it? Would you document that test?

People sometimes talk about a test automation architecture. What do you think they mean?

Re-working automated test scripts because of changes to the GUI is part of GUI level test automation. What percentage of your time do you think is acceptance to dedicate to this task?

I tend to find that it is the body of knowledge type questions that really sort the men from the boys. I think it's because there are millions (well, maybe not that many, but at least a large number :-) ) of different ways to answer these type of questions depending upon the assumptions you make. The interesting bit then comes when you get to watch people as they think through these assumptions and then provide a collection of it-depends type answers. Of course, some people crash and burn at this stage, but hey, thats interviews for you!

If you are interviewing for a Canada Border Services Officer or US Customs and Border Patrol Officer

If you are interviewing for a Canada Border Services Officer or US Customs and Border Patrol Officer, you will need to read this post. Below are some job interview questions for a Canada Border Services Officer or US Customs and Border Patrol Officer job. The methods we used to develop these questions are the same ones we used as corporate HR in developing job interview questions for hiring managers. We have developed these questions by analyzing the core competencies or skills, job ad requirements and so forth.

Canada Border Services Officer & US Customs and Border Patrol Officer Job Interview Questions

In order to carry out your duties as a Customs and Border Officer you will be required to bear arms. Are you willing to bear arms?

In order to carry out your duties as a Customs and Border Officer at times you will you will be required to exert lethal force. Would you be willing to shoot with the intent to kill?

Being a Customs Officer you will require you to have the highest ethics and integrity. Suppose you are own duty and a relative or friend of yours crosses the border at your gate. You ask what they are bringing across and the how much they have purchased. The amount they purchased is just a bit over the amount allowed. How would you handle this?

Describe a situation in which you demonstrated a strong ethical stance at work, despite pressure to do otherwise?

What were the risks involved in taking the strong stance that you did?

How did you overcome the pressure to change or weaken your stance?

How did the position you took affect the relationships that you have with the others involved?

How has your experience in life prepared you to carry out the responsibilities of an customs and border officer?

The job may require you to enforce laws and rules that you may not believe in personally. Tell me about a time when you had to enforce a rule or policy that you did not believe in?

Attention to detail is critical to the job. You will be dealing with a high volume of people crossing border and customs. You will also have to be able to quickly determine if the individual before you could be breaking customs and border laws. Tell me about a time when noticed or identified a problem before anyone else did?

To be effective in this job, you will need to be good at resolving conflict. Sometimes you will need to resolve conflict when an individual or a group of individuals attempting to cross the border are being abusive. Give me an example of a situation where you had to resolve conflict with an angry or abusive customer there or somewhere else.

List 5 traits of being a good customs and border officer? Which one would you need the most improvement in?

If you are interviewing for a Program Manager position, you may want to read this post. Below are some likely job interview questions for a Program Manager job. The methods we used to develop these questions are the same ones we used as corporate HR in developing job interview questions for hiring managers. We have developed these questions by analyzing the core competencies or skills, job ad requirements and so forth.

Program Manager Jobs in Canada
Program Manager jobs in UK

6 Program Manager Job Interview Questions

Describe a project in which you coordinated and managed all program objectives - by managing the activities of a multi-disciplined team. What was the size of the team?

How do you maintain consistent interface with functional managers of all team disciplines within the matrix organization to assure assignment of adequate resources? What are your steps and processes?

Describe a major program or project when you had direct interface between the customer and all aspects of program responsibilities --- contractual requirements, compliance to requirements, technical achievements, scheduling, budget, and report to management?

How do you keep current in your field with ongoing technical and certification changes?

Describe a time when you facilitated team input to develop program risk management plan. Manage risks and risk response strategy throughout the program.

What is your experience in developing and communicating weekly program status reports and managing program repository to ensure all program documentation is up-to-date and accessible throughout the department or organization?

More About These Questions

The interview questions in this post assess the essential soft skills for this particular job through its core functions.

So what is the interviewer looking for?

The Questions Are In Your Resume

Remember that another good source of job interview questions is your resume. Hiring managers will ask you questions based on your resume. For some people it’s hard to recall what you did last week, let alone what you did at work a few years ago. So it pays to review your resume before you go to your job interview.

For more see our online job interview and resume writing courses. So until our next post, we wish you much luck and success in your career search.

One week ago I was in Galway, Ireland, for a job interview at a very successful European company. I

One week ago I was in Galway, Ireland, for a job interview at a very successful European company. I decided after the interview that I didn't want to work for them, and they called yesterday to tell me they didn't want me to work for them anyway.

I dressed up for the interview, which made me uncomfortable, but they told me they were glad that I did, otherwise they'd have thought I wasn't serious about the job. Then they asked me a lot of silly questions like:

* Why Galway?
* How will you deal with all the rain?
* Why translating?
* Why do you want to work here?
* Why should we hire you?
* Where do you see yourself in three years?
* Have you ever had to work in a team? What did you have to accomplish, what was your contribution, and what was the outcome?
* What has been the greatest achievement in your life so far?

That team work question really bothered me, since you know what they want to hear but it's just so trite. They want to hear that you had a difficult project to work on and what your amazing contribution was that saved the day and the project. But I think that working in a team means that you don't have one person who saves the day. Anyway, I found it hard to pick an example because the question is so silly, and later on the phone they told me that while I did very well on their written test, I had a hard time finding examples and they were more interested in someone with stronger communication skills. (I was relieved, though, because I figure it's easier to be turned down than to have to tell them 'It's great that you want me, but I figured I'd rather stay put.')

Be that as it may, I dare you to think about this question:
What has been the greatest achievement in your life so far?

Here's what I read yesterday:
"These questions seem to be about honesty. Really, they're about diplomacy. What you're most proud of might be your comic-book collection. That's not necessarily what the interviewer wants to hear, and you probably know that. There are safer answers, such as "the feeling of accomplishment I get from doing something - it could be anything - really well." The trouble with the traditional interview is that both sides are wise to the game. The interviewers nod, not believing a word of it."

Tonight I am going to have plenty to do. I’m doing final preparation for upcoming job intervie

Tonight I am going to have plenty to do. I'm doing final preparation for upcoming job interviews, selecting a few final positions to apply for, going to a pre-interview information session and then going to finish out the night with pizza and poker with some of the guys. There are always going to be some tough interview questions, so I'm reviewing my relevant experiences to some of the common questions.

The toughest for me is, "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" I've got several ideas both in regards to personal life and ambitions and hopes in my professional career. But things change so much in 5 years, that I know that likely things will turn out far differently than the way I expected.

I also like to ask the interviewer questions to give me a better idea about the position's purpose and its expectations. So typically I'll ask something like, "What are some of the objectives you would like accomplished in this job?" or "What need does this position fill within the organization that is absolutely critical?" I like to know these things primarily because it helps better fulfill the needs of the position.

This point goes along with one of my favorite quotes, “Our job is not to figure out the how. The how will show up out of a commitment and belief in the what.” — Jack Canfield. The point is that people tend not care enough until they are committed to idea and to the work.

My internship last summer was an exceptional experience, with one noteworthy difficulty early on. Exactly why was our project relevant to the firm and what was the next step after it going to be? Once our team go answers to these questions it proved extremely helpful in enhancing our ongoing project to what was needed by the company.

Dear Job Hunter,

You've already prepared the perfect resume and sent copies to different companies. You have gone in and out of job interviews. But you're still clueless as to why you haven't yet received any "good news" from your prospective employers.

So, why isn't anybody hiring you yet?

The answer is simple. Your perfectly crafted resume can't close the deal for you. Job interviews, whether its formal or informal, have the last say about your entry with a certain company.

Realize that you've got lots of competition around you. Young, talented graduates are hungry for high-paying jobs. The job market doesn't have only you as a client. It is up to you to leave a lasting impression the moment you walk into the office of a prospective employer.

You've go to have some
character - a certain level of personality your future employer
can't forget about you…

It's all been said countless of times before. You have to present yourself well in a job interview. You have to exude confidence in such a way the executives won't doubt your abilities for a second. You have to show them your full potential.

You need to sell yourself - in a complete package with all the perks included - to that person sitting at the other end of the table. But honestly, how are you going to do all of that?

Want to learn the tricks and know the moves to be the best candidate for the job? I'm sure you do!

If you want to leave your future employer with no other options but to hire you, all you have to do is to know the proper techniques to attain your ideal career.

Start with your resume. Check how to write a professional resume right here...Make sure that your resume holds enough force in it. It has to end up in the right hands too. Your wonderful resume won't do you any good if it is lying somewhere in the junk mail pile. Give your resume to the right people. Only then can you expect a call back.

Deal with your appearance.

Don't go into job interviews unshaven and looking less than the professional you'd like to project. Choose your clothes well. Carry yourself with dignity. Remember, your looks talks so much about your character. So expect to be treated like a tramp if you really look like one!

Then in the actual job interview…

You have to be the person that employers are eager to hire. Manners, etiquettes, confidence, and intelligence are the things that they look for in their employees.

Can you easily get along with people. Do you know more about the job than anybody else? Are you built to withstand the pressures, the piles of work, and the hassles related to the job? If so, you've got to show them that you really are!

Acing a job interview is much similar to acing an oral examination. But it is definitely more than that. When you're there, you have to know how to be formal and when to engage in small talk. You have to know when to tell the plain truth and when to garnish your words with a little bit of exaggeration.
