From J.J. Abrams ("Lost"), Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the team behind "Star Trek," "Mission: Impossible III" and "Alias," comes a new drama that will thrill, terrify and explore the blurring line between science fiction and reality.

When an international flight lands at Boston's Logan Airport and the passengers and crew have all died grisly deaths, FBI Special Agent OLIVIA DUNHAM (newcomer Anna Torv) is called in to investigate. After her partner, Special Agent JOHN SCOTT (Mark Valley, "Boston Legal"), is nearly killed during the investigation, a desperate Olivia searches frantically for someone to help, leading her to DR. WALTER BISHOP (John Noble, "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King"), our generation's Einstein. There's only one catch: he's been institutionalized for the last 20 years, and the only way to question him requires pulling his estranged son PETER (Joshua Jackson, "Dawson's Creek") in to help.

When Olivia's investigation leads her to manipulative corporate executive NINA SHARP (Blair Brown, "Altered States"), our unlikely trio along with fellow FBI Agents PHILLIP BROYLES (Lance Reddick, "The Wire"), CHARLIE FRANCIS (Kirk Acevedo, "Oz") and ASTRID FARNSWORTH (Jasika Nicole, "Law & Order: Criminal Intent") will discover that what happened on Flight 627 is only a small piece of a larger, more shocking truth.

FRINGE is directed by Emmy Award-winning Alex Graves ("The West Wing") and produced by Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot Productions.

I am in LA this week, causing trouble on studio lots and waiting to see the pilots for the forthcoming Year of Television.

The big news is the return of Beverly Hills 90210 on The CW. Having misspent my youth falling in love with Jennie Garth (90210's Kelly Taylor) as well as Lori Loughlin (Full House), I am particularly excited about watching this (on Tuesday).

Sci-fi series Fringe is the other show worth mentioning, created by Lost boss and Cloverfield creator JJ Abrams.

More to follow...

Els protagonistes Joshua Jackson (Dawson Crece), Kirk Acevedo (The Shield) i Mark Valley (Boston Legal).

*
*
*
*
There really weren't any "new mysteries" added or new solutions offered. But I really loved seeing the homecoming for the Oceanic Six. I'm glad it wasn't like Star Trek Voyager, where the entire series is set around a homecoming that no one ever sees. (I'm still bitter about that show's finale.)

By the way, did anyone else catch that the lady who coordinated the Oceanic Six played a HUGE role in Battlestar Galactica? Don't say what the role was, because people read this blog who aren't caught up yet!

Here are my questions. Please share any ideas you have about them!

1. Much of the episode centered around the Orchid. Remember the Orchid video from last summer? Here it is if you want to see it again:

OK, exactly how does this video tie in with moving the Island? Are they going to teleport the entire Island somewhere? But if they do that, will there be a duplicate copy like we see with the rabbits?

2. Alpert's BACK! I'm so excited. He and the "others" still dress in that crazy garb though. Is everyone in his little group immortal just like he is? I bet they all came from the Black Rock.

3. How on earth do the Six get back together? Kate, Sayid, and her baby have been caught and are probably being led back to the Temple. Jack is at the helicopter. Hurley is with Locke. Sun is on the freighter. How are all these paths going to intersect?

4. Why the huge coverup story? I can only think that they're doing it out of coercion. For some reason, if they tell anyone the truth, their buddies will be killed. But does this also mean that their buddies can never return?

5. How is Ben getting out of THIS mess? We know he survives, but he sure seems outnumbered. Does he have another Smokey up his sleeve?

6. Did anyone else notice how much Jack's mom looks like an older version of Kate?

CREEPY. Dr. Jack has more issues than I thought.

7. And finally... Do you think Jin died or was simply left behind? I believe Sun paused before answering because she wanted to say "Jin's alive! Go find him!" Saying the love of your life is dead - even if it's not true - has to be heart-wrenching.

----

Well, these are all my main questions. I loved the part where Jack learned about Claire. I was cheering when Sun finally stood up to her dad. And I felt really bad for Kate when they first got off the plane. If the Island is moved, how will they ever get back?

In the past, I’ve complained a

"A Subtle Improvement"

FOX 2008-2009 Fall Schedule

In the past, I've complained a lot about FOX's scheduling practices - rather than using their biggest shows to produce strong lead-ins for new shows that need attention, they have instead chosen a path wherein they waste it on reality shows or (what I consider to be) derivative comedies. And really, their fall schedule is always a little bit of a crapshoot: considering that American Idol isn't on it, FOX is kind of hoping for subtle success before its juggernaut wins the season outright in a few months time.

This time around, I admire their scheduling far more - sure, it isn't perfect by any means, and they're only debuting two new shows, but there's a smart decision that signifies that FOX is no longer being idiots about how to handle their top shows, and to create hit new shows in their place.

New Shows

Fringe - Tuesdays at 9

It has a big-budget pilot, Lost producer J.J. Abrams on board, and most importantly has the best slot on the schedule: the newly created spot post-House on Tuesday nights. This is a smart way to create a lead-in, without question - the only concern is that the two-hour pilot will have to air without a lead-in, so I almost wonder if FOX will divide it in two just to make sure the show doesn't get off on a weak foot. (Final details of the schedule sees Fringe airing its two-hour premiere on August 26th).

Regardless of all this, the show has creative potential - while the X-Files comparisons are impossible to ignore, the show follows a young FBI agent who is forced to interact with a crazy scientist whose research may be the center of a rapid spread of paranormal phenomena. The pedigree alone will have me watching, but there is certainly a lot going for this one.

Do Not Disturb - Wednesdays at 9:30

FOX is moving its comedy block an hour later, and this multi-camera comedy from Jason Bateman (Arrested Development) about less than upscale employees at an upscale hotel is their choice to pair with the rather awful 'Til Death. I am intrigued to see what Bateman, who directed the pilot, is bringing to the table with this one, and HIMYM has at the very least kept me from balking at the term "multi-camera."

Midseason Shows

Dollhouse - Joss Whedon's (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) new series has been in production for a while now, and has an episode order, so its pickup is no surprise. As for why it is being saved for midseason, that's a better question - perhaps it was an issue of not wanting to have to move it to make room for Idol, choosing instead to find a plum timeslot for it once the 2009 schedule is settled. I don't want to presume that Whedon's show about dolls who are programmed with certain personalities until one starts to find their own program (Or something like that) is being given the "Drive" treatment that Tim Minear's show got last year, where it was held until midseason and bombed horribly. This show has more potential than that, and Whedon frakkin' deserves better.

Edit: And FOX's full schedule reveals that the show will air on Mondays at 8pm, so leading into as opposed to out of 24. I don't see the show finding traction against Dancing with the Stars, so let's hope that it proves successful.

Sit Down, Shut Up and The Cleveland Show - These two animated shows couldn't be on two more different trajectories for me: the former comes from Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz and is a cast filled with alumni from that particular Emmy-winning comedy, and the other is a spinoff of Family Guy. While I'm sure the latter will turn out fine in the end, forgive me for being more excited about the one with G.O.B. in the cast. Either way, the shows will sub in for King of the Hill and American Dad in January.

Secret Millionaire - it's a new reality show, like Oprah's Big Give for less rich people. Millionaires go into impoverished neighbourhoods, see how the other 90% of America lives, and then gives away a donation of at least $100,000 to someone they meet in their journey.

Returning Shows

Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles - Mondays at 8pm

Moving down an hour, and losing its Prison Break lead-in for no reason I can really figure out, Sarah Connor and Co. get a second chance. I've yet to finish the first season (It's on my list with Eli Stone and Reaper), but it's good to see FOX showing commitment to at least one of last season's new shows.

Bones - Wednesdays at 8pm

House - Tuesdays at 8pm

These two shows have been an hour later this season, but now they are smartly leading off two separate nights. I've seen a lot of good things in Bones recently, and the show appears to be finding traction (Good thing FOX didn't move it to Fridays as it had planned, although it is planning it again for January). House, meanwhile, finally leads out a night of programming - this was my big complaint last year, and now finally FOX is smart enough to realize that House's ratings are strong enough that it can handle an earlier time period and could actually create another successful property in the process.

Also returning: Prison Break, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Kitchen Nightmares, The Moment of Truth, Don't Forget the Lyrics, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, American Dad, King of the Hill, 'Til Death.

Canceled Shows

Back to You - The biggest surprise of the upfronts, perhaps, is that this series with two sitcom standards in Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton was booted off the schedule. The show was never that funny for me, even if it was the strongest example of traditional multi-camera sitcoms on television (Which isn't saying much), but that star power eventually led to its downfall - it was too expensive to hold onto. If I was Brad Garrett right now, I'd be thanking my lucky stars, because this was a shocker.

New Amsterdam, Canterbury's Law, Unhitched, The Return of Jezebel James - All midseason replacements, and all booted after a single season. That these shows didn't make the grade certainly isn't surprising, but it is a definite blow to procedural dramas and unfunny comedies on the network. Meanwhile, earth to Amy Sherman-Palladino: go back to single camera, and humour.

K-Ville, Nashville, The Next Great American Band - One aired for most of the fall season but never picked up any ratings (Plus Anthony Anderson already went to Law & Order), the other aired a single episode, and the other only lasted so long because it was a reality show, and got almost no ratings. The network is smartly sticking with proven reality properties on Thursday/Friday this year, so these shows get the boot.

Overall

FOX has never really cared about its Fall Schedule, but I think this is its most stable one to date: Friday has 5th Grader/Lyrics, which has had great success on Thursdays, and Moment of Truth/Kitchen Nightmares will pull at least half decent numbers against the other networks on TV's busiest night. Combine with the intelligent programming of its established hits, and really my only concern with the fall is how Terminator performs early in the evening on Monday.

And that's perhaps why its schedule seems the most successful - a few small intelligent moves, one new shows that I'm excited about, and all is great, right? Well, I have some concerns over midseason, where they might add news shows to add to the list with New Amsterdam and Canterbury's Law above, and I just hope without hope that Dollhouse is not amongst them. That's the big question mark, and I hope the upfronts later today will shed more light on this.

The word has come down from those conservative nutjobs at the FOX Network (you know...the conservatives that put "Family Guy" & "The Simpsons" on the air) and my fellow J.J. Abrams/Joss Whedon worshipers can all relax. FOX has picked up "Fringe" and "Dollhouse" for the upcoming Fall 2008 television season.

The J.J. Abrams show is "Fringe" and it sounds like an "X-Files" type show. Here is the plot summary from the IMDB:

A television drama centered around a female FBI agent who is forced to work with an institutionalized scientists in order to rationalize a brewing storm of unexplained phenomena.

Although I love J.J. Abrams, the Joss Whedon show "Dollhouse" is the one that I anticipate the most. Since I absolutely loved "Firefly" and "Serenity", this return to television for Whedon is really exciting for me. Here is its plot summary:

A futuristic laboratory assigns different tasks to its various residents, who then have their memories erased upon the completion of their assignments.

You can read some pretty cool script reviews that really describe what the shows are about. It sounds like "Fringe" is a bit more accessible while "Dollhouse" could be too much oddity for the general public to handle. Of course, the fact that Eliza Dushku is the star of "Dollhouse" guarantees numerous males from the ages of 16 to 35 will be watching...from their parent's basement of course.

This week I watched a video of J.J. Abrams (director of Alias, Lost, Mission Impossible III, and the upcoming Star Trek prequel) delivering a great talk from the 2007 TED Conference. He titled his talk “The Mystery Box”. The talk is 20 minutes, but well worth the time to view (caveat – he curses a few times)

http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/205

Abrams describes his love for mystery – which is evident in everything he produces. He also discusses his love for his grandfather, who cultivated his curiosity and love for story. On one outing, Abram's grandfather took him to a hole-in-the-wall magic shop in Chicagor where Abrams purchased a sealed package entitled “$50 of Magic for $15”.

Abram’s keeps the still unopened box on his shelf as a reminder of 2 things:

His love for his grandfather

The hope of unlimited possibilities

Abrams also describes how often mystery hides itself in movies like Jaws and Die Hard. The real story of Jaws is not a shark – it’s about a guy finding his way in a new community and culture. Die Hard is not about crazy action (however cool the action is), it’s about a divorced policeman trying to reunite with his wife.

Abrams isn’t alone in his love for mystery; God permeates his Story with mystery every day for every individual. But how often do we trust him for the contents of our “Box”? At the moment I’m in a stage of career transition where the only thing that makes sense is that I know He knows what’s in the Box. I haven’t a clue as to the contents – but if I embrace the mystery and trust Him for what only he can do – namely “unlimited possibilities” (as Abram describes it) - then each day can become an Adventure.

The catch is… the box may hold a porcupine or even a live grenade, rather than an all expense ticket to Fantasyland. We (as Abrams also states) often don’t know what the Story is really about. I can’t be sure of the contents in my box, pleasant or non, but I do know Who created the package and my Story. Based on Who He is and what He’s already done, that should be enough.

So here’s a suggestion - cultivate a love for mystery, for yourself and your children. How about this for starters – order a small leather bound bible from Amazon and have it shipped to your house. Amazon allows you to include a personal note in the package, so write something similar to this:

Even though mystery of this box is over, trust the Author of the book inside this box for His next mystery.

When the package arrives, draw a large question mark on the outside and place the box in full view. Tell your kids the box belongs to them, but ask them to commit never to open the box as a reminder of God’s mystery and infinite possibilities. If they nag you to the point you feel you are being nibbled to death by a duck – then let them open the box and read the note. Either way, lesson learned.

I struggle daily with God’s unopened package. But the mental image of the above picture provides a constant reminder to trust Him, and when I trust – I get excited about unlimited possibilities.

Well, I got my first look at the Cloverfield DVD last night. I enjoyed it very much. So, if you're apprehensive about buying it, here's a small guide to what you'll be purchasing.

While nauseating in theatres, it is very watchable on the home television.

You get 3 alt. endings, which aren't much..they really suck. But they are interesting.

Bloopers. Pretty much the funniest thing ever.

Deleted scenes. A bit more of the funniest thing ever.

A look into the making of the monster

That's all really. Nope, no big thing that tells all the answers, but there is a directors commentary which I will watch when I get the DVD myself, which may give some clue as to the answers.

Worth your money? Well, I think $25 for a DVD is ridiculous. But there are places where it's only $20. For the hype, I don't think the Special Features are good enough. You may want to wait for the price to go down a little or wait a few months for the Special Edition DVD (if one exists, but most big movies do that to generate more hype).

I've missed the past couple of episodes, so I don't know what's been recently added to the mix that is J.J. Abrams' brainchild. In fact, the last one I saw was the very good Desmond's Penny-as-constant episode (which my wife thought was great-- and she doesn't care for Lost at all).

And in the weeks that I've missed Lost, I've realized that I haven't missed Lost at all!

Now don't get me wrong, I've been there since the beginning. I've enjoyed most of the journey that is Lost. But I guess I've tired of keeping up with the convoluted plot threads that have pretty much led nowhere so far. Too many plot threads have been left dangling, unanswered, while many others have been introduced.

I much prefer the route that Battlestar Galactica is going/has gone. Things happen-- important events that alter the lives of the characters. There is no reset button (take that Star Trek!), there are no takebacks. Story lines are resolved, while new plot lines are introduced. No dangling, unanswered threads.

I guess what I'm saying is, there is payoff. My viewing loyalty is being rewarded. Not so with Lost.

At least, not with me.

I'm seriously having trouble wrapping my mind around this latest episode. As always, SPOILERS AND possible SPOILER THEORIES below. So don't read on if you haven't seen the latest episode yet!

Ben was right. Destiny is definitely a fickle bitch (hey - he said it, not me!) Everything is going your way and then BOOM! It all falls apart. Ben's a little bitter, but who can blame him?

---

Claire - What the Heck?!

Did anyone else think Claire was completely stoned? I think she is a ghost. When Sawyer rescued Claire, she was already dead. This is why she's OK with leaving Aaron behind and why she's acting so weird. (Note: JOpinionated first came up with this awesome theory about Claire, and I totally agree with it. J writes about Lost too. Check out the blog here for some great commentary and theories.)

However... There could be something else causing Claire's stoned-ness (a new word!) This is how some of the Others acted too. Like Cindy, the stewardess? Does this mean the people on the "list" were really dead and that's why Jacob wanted them?

Christian

Daddy can't leave his kids alone, even when he's dead!

Was Christian resurrected or are we seeing his ghost? Is the Island some "nexus" between this life and the next? Perhaps the electromagnetism caused a space/time rift that created a nexus. Hmm...

Locke

Did anyone else watch the hospital scene and think that Richard is his biological father? It would explain soooo much. Remember, Locke's mom was dating someone "twice her age" and Locke's grandmother acted like she recognized Richard. She also had Locke adopted. This could explain Locke's powers.

Locke's father - the one that we've seen all along - might not really be his father. Maybe he just conned Locke to get his kidney.

(Don't even get me started on the parallels between Locke drawing Smokey as a young boy and Starbuck drawing the cloud as a young girl on Battlestar. I think both shows are about time loops.)

Richard

Ageless Richard... He works for Mittelos Bioscience, the same company that recruited Juliet. It's a front for the Island Natives & Ben. I like to think of Mittelos as Dharma's Nemesis (note: Mittelos is an anagram for Lost Time.)

Move the Island...

How the heck will someone do THAT?! Do you think they mean move the Island's location or move the Island in time? This has to be why Jack, Widmore, and Ben can't find the Island in the future - it's not in the same place. But why does the Island want the Oceanic 6 back?

A Game of Chess...

There's a battle for the Island and the opponents are Mittelos vs. Dharma. (Luckily this isn't a real chess game because I lose those. Just ask all the people I'm playing on Facebook...)

Mittelos - Featuring Ben, the Others, Jacob's List, and Richard (one of the Natives). Since the Natives predated Dharma, they are probably from the Black Rock.

Dharma - Featuring Charles Widmore, who runs Dharma now (created by Alvar Hanso), the freighter folks, Keamy, and Abaddon. Random note: Magnus Hanso was captain of the Black Rock. His descendant, Alvar Hanso, started Dharma.

Martin Keamy

Last but not least, the most evil man on Lost, Keamy. Cold, heartless, and blood-thirsty. As my friend Kelly pointed out, his name is rather appropo. And no, if you don't know me personally, you won't understand, so don't even try. :-) Btw, can anyone tell me WHY Smokey didn't kill Keamy?

That's it for now. Mostly a stream-of-consciousness post about Lost. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

JJ. Abrams

Now that I've seen Cloverfield all I can say is, God am I glad I didn't see that on a big screen. Even on our relatively small television (36" -- it seemed big when we bought it eight years ago ...), the shaky-cam style made me a little uncomfortable. In a real theater with a screen the size of a barn wall, I would've been yakking all over the person in front of me. (I'm extremely susceptible to motion sickness.)

Anyway, aside from the shaky-cam issues that made me watch a good part of the film sidelong, I liked Cloverfield a lot. I'm a sucker for giant-monster movies and this one was about 100 times better than the sad-sack remake of Godzilla from several years back. Watching Godzilla I just felt sorry for the monster; this one scared the crap out of me, and the weird little critters that fell off of it were pretty nasty pieces of work, too. (Have I mentioned that I periodically dream about one or more giant monsters rampaging through the city where I live? Is that weird? Doesn't everybody have that dream ... ?)

Interestingly enough, in the special features for Cloverfield, we learn that the monster is just a frightened baby and when it roars it's calling for its mother. So we were supposed to feel sorry for the monster this time. Ummmm, okay, if you say so. I thought it was just some badass trashing New York City for reasons unknown ...

As per usual with a "rescue" movie, we have our little band of heroes who are risking their own lives to save a friend. (The lesson of Cloverfield might be "After you sleep with the girl, call her and tell her you love her; it'll make things a lot easier on you when a giant monster starts chewing up Manhattan.") I'd heard bad things about the performances, but I thought they were quite good. In particular, T.J. Miller as Hud, the "guy behind the camera", managed to make his character sympathetic with next to no screen time, just voice work. Lizzy Caplan was terrific as Marlena, making me completely forget about her character from Mean Girls. The other actors were fine and believable as well, but they were saddled with less interesting characters than these two. In particular, I found the Robert Hawkins character, the putative hero, to be kinda one-note and boring. Useless and uninteresting trivia: In the late 80s I played a play-by-mail (PBM) game of space exploration called "Beyond the Quadra Zone". (This was before we had online gaming. Hard to believe, eh?) Anyway, the name of my character was Robert Hawkins. Mr. Abrams, I'll be expecting my royalty check in the mail.

The shaky-cam invites comparisons to The Blair Witch Project, but it's really the only similarity between the two. (I hated The Blair Witch Project. Blech!)

My wife more or less completely ignored Cloverfield the whole time it was on (all 84 minutes of it!), so I can't really give it my usual rating of how long it took to put her to sleep. But she must've spent at least a little time paying attention to it, because she said she also thought the performances were good. Draw your own conclusions ...

WARNING: Comments on this review may contain spoilers.

I just saw an interview with Star Trek XI director, J.J. Abrams, and he made some interesting commen

I just saw an interview with Star Trek XI director, J.J. Abrams, and he made some interesting comments about the new Star Trek movie, set for release in May, 2009. (Pushed back from it's original release date of December 2008.) I am not a huge Trek fan. I enjoyed the original series for what it was, especially Shatner's acting. The only Trek movies worth watching were Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and Star Trek IV: The Long Voyage Home. Other than those two movies, the rest are fairly unremarkable. Again, the Next Generation was good for its time, but now seems rather dated. Voyager and DS9 where completely forgettable. However, I do go against popular opinion, and think Enterprise was the best of all the series'. There has even been talk of bringing a new series back to the small screen. Unless they are willing to go in a totally new direction with it, I just don't think it will fly. IMHO, Battlestar Galactica has raised the standard of Sci-fi very high, and I just don't think Star Trek can even compete.

This brings me to Abrams effort to revive the series in his new movie. He has stated that this movie will be a stand alone film, that all movie goers can enjoy, rather than something that caters to rabid Trekkers. He has also stated that it should please fans as it will remain faithful to the original idea. I am interested to see how Abrams will pull this off. How does one, "Go in a new direction, while remaining faithful to the original?" Abrams has also stated that the effects for this Trek are something that has never been done before. I am really interested to see where he goes with this! I cannot imagine what he means by this, as I don't think he was referring to effects done just in a Trek movie, but in any movie. Hopefully Abrams can deliver.

Below is a picture of the "new" Enterpise in Earth orbit. I'm not sure if this was leaked from Abrams' movie or is a fan creation. It looks very cool wherever it came from!

Auntie Em: "Why don't you find a place where there isn't any trouble?"
Dorothy: "A place where there isn't any trouble. Do you suppose there is such a place Toto? There must be."
                                                                               The Wizard of Oz

Melissa: “Is there an F5?... What would that be like?”
Jason 'Preacher' Rowe: ”The finger of God.”
Twister

Chances are if you think back to where you were in 1996 it may seem like 100 years ago. A lot can happen in 12 years.

1996 is on my radar today because it's the release date of a two-disc special edition of the movie Twister that was made that year. Iowa was not on my radar back then and neither were storm chasers. Those strange people who in the name of science roam the region known as tornado alley chasing monster-sized tornados looking for data to improve warning systems and hopefully save lives. (And also a good excuse to have an exciting day at the office.)

Twister was shot in Oklahoma and Iowa and according to some reports it was one of the most demanding films ever made. It earned every penny of its almost $500 million worldwide gross. According to Box Office Mojo Twister is #50 in all-time domestic box office draw.

It was everything that you expect from a big Hollywood tent pole movie. Special effects and more special effects. In fact, I think it’s fair to say that in the Twister screenplay the story is basically there to bridge one spectacular special effect with the next. The filmmakers and the studios told us what kind of film they were making and delivered on their promise.

I look forward to seeing the special edition DVD just to see the behind the scene footage and listen to the added commentary material. In fact, the commentary material may be the only way I watch some films from now on. I did that for the first time with the movie Cloverfield. I just rented it to listen to the director's commentary. (I love learning little things like one phrase producer J.J. Abrams is fond of saying to keep the budget down is “We can make this whole movie with a ball of yarn.” Abrams and director Matt Reeves did an amazing job with special effects on Cloverfield given their budget was only a third of Twisters.)

A couple weeks ago I was meandering in a used book store next to the University of Northern Iowa looking for something different and came across a book called Twister: The Science of Tornadoes and the Making of an Adventure Movie by Keay Davidson.

I flipped through it and found this quote:

“If you want a spiritual experience, you should go spend April to June in the Midwest, because you have never seen cloud formations like this! You watch everything in the sky happening in front of you as if you were watching time-lapse photography. We would literally watch cloud towers shoot into the sky and within fifteen minutes one little cloud would rise to become one 30,000 feet high.”
                                                                     Producer (Twisted) Kathleen Kennedy

Now when Kathleen Kennedy talks you should listen. She has flat out had an amazing career in Hollywood and has had a hand in producing some of my favorite films: E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Seabiscuit (the only movie poster I own), and most recently The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. If you’re still not impressed, she also produced the upcoming Indiana Jones film being released later this month. (Not bad for starting out as a secretary/production assistant for Steven Spielberg.)

To top it off Kennedy is married to Frank Marshall who produced Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Bourne Ultimatum and a whole lot in between. Together the Kennedy/Marshall duo have produced films that have made over 5 billion dollars.

Here’s another passage from Davidson’s book:

Twister’s setting is as grandiose as its subject: the Midwest. A terrain as rich in myth for Americans as the Aegean is for Greeks…What makes the Midwestern sky “so interesting is that the terrain is so flat—more than half of what you’re seeing is sky! So you tend to pay a lot of attention to it, said (Twister) director of photography Jack Green. “They’ve got these incredible cloud patterns passing through—clouds that contrast against a clear, intense blue and nearly unpolluted sky.”

The blue sky here in Iowa can be mesmerizing. (Especially if you've ever been on the Disney lot in Burbank and not been able to see the Verdugo Mountains just a few miles away because of the smog.) And while some Hollywood producers only know that blue sky as they’re flying over this part of the country, there are stories to be told from here. And I hope you're doing your part to write them down wherever you live.

On a closing note the first week of May is not even over and already around 100 tornados have been spotted in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana and Iowa. Unfortunately it’s cost hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damages and claimed several lives.

And even more tragic, in Myanmar (next to Thailand) they report over 20,000 deaths due to a cyclone this week.

None of us know where we'll be 12 years from now. But one thing we can be sure of is there will be more disasters like Hurricane Katrina, 911, and the Tsunami that killed over 200,000 in Asia. There will be many prayers said and much relief work done. But remember that stories can also bring healing power and help give us perspective on life.

"Today is Father's Day. Until my stroke, we had felt no need to fit this made-up holiday into our emotional calendar. But today we spend the whole of the symbolic day together, affirming that even a rough sketch, a shadow, a tiny fragment of a dad is still a dad."
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Jean-Dominique Bauby

A PRESTO!!!

Ahí voy (total, nadie me va a leer):

Jack was up all night drinking, and now he's stumbling around making a fool of himself in front of everyone. Juliette tries calming him down, but it's no use. He pushes her off and tries to catch his breath.

Jack: Jussasecon, jussasecon... Guys... umm, you know, like, we're gonna get off the island. 'Cause, I love you guys so much... an-and... *cries*

Juliette puts him to bed. She tells Kate that he's had a lot to drink and that they might need to remove his liver. Kate tells her that it's his appendix that needs to be removed, and that she's an idiot and should stick to pediatrics.

In the future (!) Jack's walking around naked in his big, expensive house. He checks himself out in a mirror and towels off his love-handles before jumping in the shower with Kate (yes!). Later, Kate walks around looking hot in one of Jack's doctor shirts. Then they make out. I'm sure we all have jobs as fulfilling as Matthew Fox's.

On the beach, Bernard is getting ready to throw down on Faraday and Charlotte. Faraday says that all they ever wanted was to help, but Charlotte tells him not waste his breath.

Charlotte: It's pointless Daniel. We've been tried and convicted in the court of public opinion. *snicker*

Daniel: Charlotte, why don't you just shut the f**k up, 'kay?

Juliette breaks things up and tells everyone that Jack needs his appendix removed. Kate throws up her hands and walks away. Juliette says she's going to need someone to go to the medical station to get a few supplies. Eager to show what a great guy he is, Faraday says that he and Charlotte will go. Juliette likes the cut of his jib, but doesn't know if she can trust him. She hands Jin her gun and says to put them down if they try anything funny. Jin takes a look at the gun and says it's the coolest ninja star he's ever seen.

Jin and friends head off to the medical station and Juliette gives Jack a sponge bath. "You know what would be awesome?" he asks. "If you were Kate. Hey, have you ever performed an appendectomy?" "Sure I have," Juliette answers. Jack winces. "Then why are you shaving those?"

In the future (!), Jack gets a call from the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit and asked if he could give a little insight on a case they've been working. Jack agrees and heads over to the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Inside, a kindly old guard tells him, "Past the others. It's the last cell. Stay to the middle. I put out a chair for you." As Jack reaches the end of the hallway, he's waiting for him. Like he knew he was coming.

Jack: Dr. Lecter.

Lecter: You're worried, Jack. Worried that you've made the wrong choice. Worried that you've let down those who depend on you the most. It haunts you, Jack. I myself am also haunted. Our old friend, Charlie. He gave me a message, for you. Before the night is over, you will be visited by three ghosts.

Jack: Humbug!

Jack runs home and proposes to Kate, and man, it's just awesome. Because, they're so great, and just... man I wish I were on Lost!

At the medical station, Sun looks a little upset. When Jin asks her what's the matter, she tells him that the baby's kicking. Jin's surprised. "You're pregnant? What do you weigh, like fifty pounds?" After they get back to the beach, he corners Charlotte.

Jin: Now you risten, and risten good. I break all you finga -- LOL I'm sorry I couldn't resist. But seriously, you get Sun off this island, or I'm gonna f**k you up.

Charlotte: Could my forehead get any bigger?

Jin: What?

Juliette starts operating. "This is just like MASH," she says. "I'm Hawkeye. Bernard, you're Alan Alda. Jin's Charlie. Get it?" Bernard looks over at her. "You know everybody hates you, right?"

Back at the hospital, where the only prerequisite to working there is that you look good in a white lab coat, Jack's studying an x-ray when he hears a strange noise outside his office. Slowly, he creeps into the lobby. That's when he sees him.

Jack: Wilfred Brimley?

One of Jack's attractive doctor friends sneaks up on him. She asks if he's feeling alright. Jack tells her that he's totally cool, but wonders if she'd write him a prescription for cocaine. "Oh yeah, man. No worries." She pulls out her doctor pad and scribbles something. They stand there for a minute. "Hey," Jack asks. "How do you think I'd look in a beard?"

Kate walks in on Juliette and an unconscious Jack in the hospital tent. Juliette jumps up and hides something.

Juliette: Oh dammit! Kate. You scared the bejeezus out of me.

Kate: Juliette, what were you doing?

Juliette: What? Nothing. What? Jack said he loves you. I gotta go.

In the future (!), Kate comes home to find Jack asleep at his desk. He snaps awake and asks her where she's been. When she won't tell him, he chases her around and throws bowling balls at her.

Kate: Jack, I can't have you acting like this around my son!

Jack: Kate, he's just an orphan from a basket in the middle of the desert! Just a bastard in a basket!

As Kate picks up Aaron and storms off, their butler comes in.

Butler: Mr. Jack?

Jack: I'm finished!

**LOSTWATCH!! will return in three weeks (ZOMG *dies*). The wife and I are headed to Europe, and I hear they don't even have TV over there!

The over-hyped and over-rated J.J. Abrams has been quoted in numerous online articles this very second, saying that his re-boot of the Star Trek franchise will be a "movie for fans of movies, not fans of 'Star Trek,' necessarily."'

All stand and give that man a round of applause.

Here's an idea; let's get George Lucas to re-make the Star Wars saga for fans of movies, and not fans of "Star Wars".

Oh, wait...he did that already with the prequels.

Abrams went on to reveal that he was "not a rabid fan" of Trek. Seriously, we're shaking our heads in amazement at that one. Excuse us for being utterly stupid, but if he's not a fan of the Trek franchise, then why the hell is he doing it?

Oh, gentle reader, we have the answer: money.

Not surprisingly, Abrams offers his own pretentious reasons (and we quote): "To take the characters, the thoughtfulness, the personalities, the sense of adventure, the idea of humanity working together, the sense of social commentary and innovation, all that stuff. To take it and apply it in a way that felt genuinely thrilling."

How delightfully twee.

With a track record that includes the highly convoluted and boring "Lost", as well as fan-wank show "Alias", not to mention the 'yet-another-post-9/11-fapfest "Cloverfield", we think we'll no doubt be in the minority when we say that we're looking forward to the "JJ Abrams Star Trek" about as much as we look forward to a three-way romp with a Brazilian transvestite and an over-sized Shetland Pony called Susan.

And yet more from Abrams - how does he feel about Trek fans, and making movies for them?

"You can't really make a movie for them. As soon as you start to guess what you think they are going to want to see, you're in trouble. You have to make the movie in many ways for what you want to see yourself, make a movie you believe in. Then you're not second-guessing an audience you don't really have an understanding of."

Which begs the question: If you don't understand your target audience, WHY BOTHER MAKING THE MOVIE IN THE FIRST PLACE?!?

We give up. We're off to surf for porn, and get very, very drunk indeed.

If by this point you're still interested, "Star Trek" is due in theatres May 8, 2009.
