Here's the rundown:

Highs In The '90s: '90s music? I'm so there. It was a top-20 countdown of music videos on Fuse from musicians from the '90s who liked alcohol, weed, and/or probably huffing Lysol. I think that was just about all of them, so the countdown tried to stick with the artists who had reputations for substance use and/or abuse, like Scott Wieland (STP) Courtney Love (Hole), Cypress Hill, and Snoop Dogg. As these countdowns tend to be, it was fairly debatable; for one thing, this '90s countdown included "Because I Got High" by Afroman, from 2000.

Highlights included the some of my favorite '90s videos/songs: "Nuthin' But A G Thang" by Dr. Dre/Snoop Dogg, "Who Am I (What's My Name)" by Snoop Dogg, "Woo Ha! (Got You All In Check)" by Busta Rhymes, "Fantastic Voyage" by Coolio, "Jump Around" by House of Pain, "Tha Crossroads" by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and "All Mixed" Up by 311. Geez, you'd think I'd have actually used drugs at least once in my life judging by the music I listen to. Lowlights included "Been Caught Stealing" by Jane's Addiction (I've always frickin' hated that song) and the fact that the countdown was hosted by Jason Mewes, aka Jay of "Jay and Silent Bob" fame. He's kinda funny sometimes, but was just grating as a countdown host.

Watching this countdown brought me back to the good ol' days: not the days when I would get high (again: me = non-drug user), but rather the days when music video channels showed music videos, hip hop was actually worth listening to, and I had nary a care in the world.

The Boys And Girls Guide To Getting Down: Very tongue-in-cheek and sorta informative of how to do things (and probably more importantly: how not to do things) if you're into (or want to be into) drugs, alcohol, and the whole party scene. I took notes the whole time and put them into my personal "How to be streetwise" handbook, which mainly includes stuff I've learned from rap songs, like E-40's nice little tidbit: "Never tell a b**** all your business / cuz one day she might be an eyewitness." That right there's real food for thought! Haha, okay maybe not...

The Truth About Cats And Dogs: If I watch a chick flick, it usually means all the planets and the stars have lined up just right. This one had been sitting in my DVR for just over three months. I'm not really sure what to make of this movie. It's kinda old-ish now, and in the time since it originally came out, I've grown to be annoyed with Janeane Garafolo, and I'm used to seeing Uma Thurman play smarter and/or more confident and/or more intimidating characters. I had to forget those things to watch this.

According to my channel guide, it supposedly got three stars. I don't know how it even got that many; I didn't really feel any of what I think the movie was trying to convey, like any type of jealousy Garafolo I think was supposed to have toward Uma. I just thought she was cynical and was trying to act jealous that Uma liked the guy she did. Also, usually I side with the guys in a chick flick -- cuz, well, I'm a guy -- especially when women play some sort of trick (even unintentionally) on the guy. Not this one. I came away feeling like the dude was a prick, and not justified, by how he reacted when he realized he thought Uma was Garafolo.

Also, I was just left feeling preached at, like, as a guy, I'm supposed to hate myself for ever being attracted to attractive women. In seriousness, I'm about well more than just looks in a woman, and they certainly aren't the end-all, be-all, or even a necessity. However, that said, I do appreciate a good-looking woman and/or a woman who tries. Sorry.

Next: I liked the idea of the movie -- I wish I could see two minutes into the future -- but it was wrought with bad acting, namely from Jessica Biel and Juliane Moore. Nicolas Cage was a'ight, and it had a few decent moments here or there, but overall? Blah. The bad guys didn't even seem like bad guys; they were just kinda there, and they certainly didn't give me the feeling they were competent enough to truly pose the threat -- trying to blow up a nuke -- they were supposedly posing.

Last week's So You Think You Can Dance (both episodes): The only new couple I thought did well both times out was Will and Katee, though I'm still not really a fan of either. I liked the old couples better, especially Gev and Courtney. And WTF is the deal w/ Comfort coming back for Jessica? I understand Jessica's hurt, but Comfort is only okay as a hip hop dancer. And even then, she doesn't really have any stunts or tricks or anything. I'd have had Comfort come back for just that week and not put the girls to a vote, and then resume voting for the girls this week. Instead, Kherington gets bounced and Comfort gets to stay in, even though Jessica will be on tour instead of Comfort? Screw that. I think Kherington was the only girl I really liked this year. Courtney's hot, but she's kinda blah. Also, my favorite of the guys -- Gev -- got bounced, too. He shoulda lasted at least one more week. Call me partial to the breakdancers, but I don't care. I thought, for the most part, he did great with all the other stuff they threw his way. At least Twitch is still in. After that, I don't really care. As a side note, Mia Michaels' dance numbers are hit-and-miss for me. I either love them, or I have no clue whatsoever what she was trying to do. This week? No clue. I still think she'd probably be cool to hang out with, though.

USA Basketball: Road To Redemption: For some reason, really bad storms have hit the two nights this has aired so far -- thus my satellite signal cutting out -- so only 23 minutes of last night's 30 minute episode were recorded. I watched that, but decided to finally getting around to watching the first installment of the series, which was a full hour. I had recorded a later replay of it off NBATV since when it originally aired on ESPN2, 40 minutes of it cut out because of storms. It was a good recap of the progression USA Basketball has taken to get to where it's at now since the Dream Team was put together in '92 and just decimated everyone. I'm a huge sucker for behind-the-scenes sports footage, even if it's nothing more than footage of LeBron James sleeping on the team plane, so the old footage of the Dream Team was great to see.

Reporter: What do you think about Angola?
Charles Barkley: I don't know anything about Angola, but Angola's in trouble.

Even though it's edited and doesn't include any of the really fun (and/or scandalous) behind-the-scenes stuff, it still is interesting to see how the current team has been put together, how they appear to be gelling on the court and off, and all the stuff they have to do, like the media blitz in New York they did.

Last Thursday's My Boys: I don't know why I watch this show. Okay, maybe I do: Jim Gaffigan's funny, it's sorta about sports (though less and less), and Jordana Spiro's nothing to sneeze at. But on the other hand, the Mike character is annoying beyond belief, it's less and less about sports, and some elements, including full plot threads (like Stephanie becoming a [sorta] famous author), are just unrealistic.

Having been a journalist, I just wanna know how PJ and Bobby have so much time to just sit around and do nothing. Journalism's not a job; it's a lifestyle. And if they're real Cubs' beat writers, why aren't they ever on the road covering the team? I know it's gotta be baseball season they're showing us in the show. At the very least, having grown up in the Chicago area and knowing what the weather's like, judging by their wardrobe, it certainly doesn't appear to be the offseason.

I guess I just watch it to kill time? I don't know. It's only a half hour (21 min. without commercials), so what the heck. All I know is I don't know about PJ getting w/ the wife-beater/wife-killer/child-abuser/drug-addicted guy from season 2 of 24. I'm sure he was all charming at first with the wife he ended up ultimately tossing in the trunk, too. PJ better make friends with Elisha Cuthbert and hope her boyfriend from that season grows his legs back so he can go Bruce Lee on that dude again, and/or so she can have her pops, Jack Bauer -- via cell phone -- guide her through putting two bullets in his chest again.

Lucky Number Slevin: I have no clue how this happened, but when I set this to record, I thought it was Smokin' Aces. I just got the two confused somehow. Smokin' Aces hasn't hit my movie channels yet. But Lucky Number Slevin was quite a pleasant surprise. Not bad.

I have to say they tricked me with the switcharoo. I didn't see Josh Hartnett actually being who he ended up being in the end. The fact his character had a made-up story in hand made it seem like he was who he was saying he was. It started out a little slow for me, but shortly in, the action and comedic dialogue and situations had me hooked all the way through the end. Lucy Liu's presence as the love interest was also quite the pleasant treat, and I was legitimately pissed when Bruce Willis shot her later on.

I thought the movie was tied together quite nicely in the end and explained how all of the subplots related to each other.

That's all. I told you I was on a DVR-watchin' tear. I even still have a documentary I didn't get to: Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price. At least I got the DVR cleaned out.

Hmmm... maybe I shoulda broke this post into chunks. It's massive, all over the map, and contains about a zillion tags. My bad...

I laid on the sofa and watched not one but two movies.  Next with Nicholas Cage which Dave highly recommended and M. loved, but it didn't do much for me.  Frankly, Cage just looked really gross and orange (bad spray tan technician bad...he should smack you on the nose with a newspaper), and it got even more skeevy when he started fondling Jessica Biel.  Ick!  I just kept thinking he should have snapped Julianne Moore's neck after the logs fell.  Too much?  Oh well, I've got a sadistic streak.  For the last few years all the new movies have made me think, why didn't they just _____?  There seems to be a bit of tweaking that's going undone.  There have been several things I've seen that could have been spectacular if taken from a different angle.

The second movie was Secret Ceremony on Sundance.  Elizabeth Taylor is a hooker whose child died suddenly.  Mia Farrow is a highly disturbed child whose once overbearing, dead mother bears a striking resemblance to Taylor.  It was one of those odd 1960's flicks that are all psychological misfits and dark deads with Taylor trying to make Farrow over in her dead child's image while Farrow tries to screw her stepfather, Robert Mitchum.  I don't much care for those types of movies but Elizabeth Taylor is always compelling, and no one does crazy like Mia Farrow. 

In fact, M. and I had a running conversation all weekend about actors.  There aren't many actors in the world in my opinion.  Most "actors" use the same expressions, voices, and attitudes for every role they take (Jack Nicholson comes to mind...don't believe me?  watch About Schmidt and As Good As It Gets...I'm not saying his style hasn't changed over time...his younger work is very different).  Then they complain about typecasting.  The most successful of these "actors" just learn to pick the right flicks to suit them.  The actors that do crazy best are the ones I love.  I'm a big believer in the idea that any really good performance takes from a facet of the actor's personality.  Like I said, Mia Farrow is great at crazy.  For that matter, so are Anne Heche and Jenna Elfman.  Just sayin'....

I even picked up a book.  I Am Legend by Richard Matheson has taken up residence in M.'s library (aka the john).  So while 'um taking care of business (pretty, delicate, flowery girly business cuz that's how I roll and all...nothing stinky cuz that wouldn't be girly...even though it does allow time for said reading...why I'd never!) the other day, I picked it up.  I guess he hooked me since I'm still reading it.  The writing is compelling, but I cannot see how it would make a good movie.  The vast majority of it is one white guy talking to himself in his own head.  I think I'll have to see the movie version after I finish it.  Obviously, M. thought it was the book translation of the movie or he wouldn't have bought it.  I always wondered who the heck would buy one of those.  I mean why read it when you can just watch the movie?  M. not only watches (and often owns) the movie, but then he goes out and buys the book version of the screenplay.  I'm not talking about reading Louisa May Alcott's Little Women and then watching the movie.  I'm talking about stuff like Star Trek's Insurrection or SpiderMan 2.  I don't get it, not one bit.  Am I missing something?

The weekend even ended on a high note.  I had a craving for Sesame Chicken.  I haven't had sesame chicken since I was a carnivore.  So I got on my favorite recipe site (Recipezaar) and found hundreds of recipes, but in the back of my mind was a recipe I'd seen years ago using ketchup to make the sauce.  It sounded odd then, but I kept looking and found 3 Sesame Chicken recipes using ketchup.  None of them worked for me because I didn't have many of the ingredients.  So I started experimenting.  And, it was FABULOUS!  The sauce came out exactly like the local chinese restaurant's sauce.  I was in love.  In case you want to try it:

1/4 cup soy sauce

1/2 cup pineapple juice

1/2 cup ketchup

5 tablespoons brown sugar (the original recipes often used honey but I was out)

1/4 teaspoon Chinese 5 spice (I had Emeril's Asian seasoning)

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon ground ginger

Allow to bubble on the stove for about 3 minutes.

I was amazed at how close I'd come to the restaurant.  There is no way it's good for you.  Maybe I should get that colonic!

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

Ki a rendező: A frankfurti születésű Marcus Nispel, aki karrierjét videoklip- illetve reklámfilm-rendezőként kezdte. 2003-ban készíttette el a Texasi láncfűrészes újráját Michael Bay produceri felkérésére, de Nispel nevéhez fűződik még a Pathfinder című akciókaland is. Emberünk következő projektje a Péntek 13. franchise feltámasztása lesz ugyancsak Bay hathatós közreműködésével.

Ki játszik benne: Egy bizonyos Jessica Biel nevezetű amerikai jócsaj, aki meglepő vagy sem, de első igazi főszerepét pont ebben a filmben kapta, majd olyan produkciókban játszott még mint a Penge, az Elizabethtown, a The Illusionist, a Next vagy a Férj és férj.

Miss Biel-en kívül kapunk még az arcunkba jópár sorozatsztárocskát, illetve egy zseniális veteránszínészt, R. Lee Ermey-t (a Full Metal Jacket-et mindenképpen tessék megnézni!).

Mi a sztori: 1973. augusztus 18-án öt fiatal autózik egy lerobbant furgonnal a Lynyrd Skynyrd aktuális koncertjére. Útközben felvesznek egy halálrarémült fiatal csajszit, aki aztán egészen innovatív módon, gyorsan átküldi magát a másvilágra. A kis csapat tagjai - joggal - összecsinálják magukat, majd elindulnak megkeresni a helyi seriffet, de az isten háta mögötti vidéken végül egy jóétvágyú kannibál családba botlanak...

Értékelés: Négy évvel ezelőtt amikor először láttam Tobe Hooper 1974-es klasszikusát, bizony elég rendesen beütött (máig ott figyel kedvenc horrorjaim között, és simán benne van a hetvenes-nyolcvanas évek Top 3 horrorjában). El nem bírom képzelni, hogy az akkori közönség hogyan reagálhatott arra a filmre, mely még mai szemmel is letaglózó hatású és ultrabrutális (annak ellenére, hogy alig folyik benne vér). Bizarr témája miatt be is tiltották jópár országban, de ez sem akadályozhatta meg, hogy rövid időn belül kultklasszik horrorrá avanzsáljon a rajongók körében.

A hollywoodi remake ötlete egyébként úgy fogant meg, hogy Michael Bay barátunk 2002-ben a Pearl Harbor buktája után gondolt egy merészet, hogy ideje lenne már megismertetni jópár horrorklasszikust a mai fiatalsággal, és választása Tobe Hooper munkájára esett (persze nem kell aggódni, hamarosan érkezik a Péntek 13., Hitchcock Madarak-ja, sőt Freddy Kruger is hamarosan visszaköszön a vásznon Mr. Bay produceri vezénylete mellett). Szóval a videoklipek világából érkező direktor felkért egy másik videoklipes szakit, Marcus Nispelt, hogy ugyan vállalja már be ezt a filmet. Nispel rábólintott, majd elindult a forgatás Tobe Hooper és Kim Henkel eredeti forgatókönyve alapján. Aztán hogy mi lett belőle? Mindjárt kiderül!

Jól van, ne kerülgessük tovább a forró kását: nem jött be nekem ez a remake, annak ellenére sem - teszem hozzá gyorsan -, hogy nem egy alapvetően szar horrorról van szó (legalábbis a még mindig divatos ázsiai tucat remake-ekhez képest). Viszont gondolom, senkit nem lepek meg azzal, hogy fényévekre van az eredetitől. Ez pedig részben a borzadály forgatókönyvnek, a gyenge színészi játéknak illetve a gyakorlatilag nullára redukált feszültségteremtésnek köszönhető (bezzeg gore az van dögivel, de erről majd később).

Scott Kosar igen gyorsan szégyellje össze magát, A gépész után nem gondoltam volna, hogy ennyire pocsék szkriptet képes gyártani. Ráadásul egy kurva jó alapból, ami erősen merített az ötvenes évek sorozatgyilkosának, Ed Gein-nek a munkásságából (legalábbis, ami a kannibalizmust és a bizarr bőrpreparátumokat illeti). Kosar nem erőltette meg magát túlzottan: az általa kreált karakterek tökéletesen egydimenziós, személyiség nélküli sablonok (gondolom fogott pár idétlen tinihorrort, aztán kiollózott belőlük néhány figurát). Két csaj meg három csávó koncertre utaznak az isten háta mögötti vidéken át, miközben civakodnak, dugnak meg füveznek (tökéletesen megágyazott kliséalap bármely PG-13-as amcsi "horrorhoz" - bár tegyük hozzá, hogy a Hooper féle film ereje sem a szkriptben rejlett). Az eredetihez képest egyébként már a történet elején is módosítottak: ugyanis a stoppos, akit felvesznek nem az a bizonyos őrült figura, hanem egy idegesítő tyúk (Lauren German a Hostel 2-ből btw), akinek sorsa bezony másképpen alakul mint azt Hooper-ék '74-ben elképzelték... :)

Igen-igen gyenge a színészi felhozatal, bár mit is várhatnék egy igénytelen slasher szinjére degradált produkciótól. Az egy dolog, hogy már eleve ott el van cseszve az egész, hogy Kosar jellegtelen figurákat alkotott és borzadály szövegeket adott színészei szájába, és a becastingolt fiatalság nem tudott ezzel mit kezdeni, de legalább ne lettek volna olyan istentelenül idegesítőek. Különösen igaz ez a Peppert alakító Erica Leerhsen-re, aki konkrétan azzal volt hajlamos kompenzálni saját színésznői hiányosságait, hogy torkaszakadtából ordított - de úgy, hogy attól nem megijedtem, hanem szabályosan falra másztam!

Volt azért egy-két érdekesség is. Például fura volt látni, hogy az egyébként többre érdemes Eric Balfour (Claire egyik balhés csávója a Sírhant Művekből) vajon mi a fenét keresett ebben a produkcióban (biztos pénzre volt szüksége, vagy a fene tudja). Sőt valahol olvastam, hogy Bay és Nispel még Gunnar Hansen-t (Leatherface az eredetiben) is megkereste, hogy egy napra ugorjon be cameozni, de az izlandi színész gyorsan visszadobta az ajánlatot. Jól is tette, gondolom megérezte, hogy nem tenne jót a karrierjének, ha egy ilyen remake-hez adná a nevét.

Na de mondjuk azért valami pozitívumot is a szereplőgárdáról. Soványka vigasz ugyan, de ha a csajok nem tudtak játszani, legalább jól mutattak a vásznon: nyilván jelentősen hozzájárult a film kasszasikeréhez, hogy Jessica Biel gyakorlatilag egyetlen kis feszülős topban szaladgálja végig a filmet... :)

Teszett, hogy Nispel-ék jól láthatóan magasról tettek a besorolóbizottságra, és annyi gore-t pakoltak a filmbe, amennyi csak belefért (a rendezői változat nem is úszta meg az NC-17-et, négy jelenetet teljesen újra kellett vágniuk). Ez a PG-13 kategóriás "horrorok" korában becsülendő dolog, az viszont már nem, hogy a gore növekedésével fordított arányosságban csökkent az eredetire oly jellemző betegesen súlyos hangulat és feszültség. Pedig ez utóbbi nálam ugyanolyan fontos (sőt talán még fontosabb) összetevője egy minőségi horrornak mint a gore mennyisége (a REC pont emiatt csúszott el nálam). Hatásos történet és idegtépő feszültség nélkül egy horror nem horror, akármennyi gyomorforgató belezést is pakolnak bele (lásd Fűrész franchise utolsó két része vagy a Hostel filmek). Hogyan kell beteg hangulatot teremteni mindenféle vérontás nékül? Tessék csak megtekinteni Hooper filmjének hírhedt vacsorajelenetét!

Az is jellemző, hogy amikor a poszt elejére beszúrandó idézetet kerestem, egyszerűen nem bírtam megállni röhögés nélkül a film tagline-ját ("You want scary? THIS is scary!"). Most komolyan, ezt remélem önironikus kikacsintásnak szánták, mert ha nem, akkor valami igen nagy gáz lehetett a kreatívok fejében, mikor ezt megszülték. :) Javaslom, hogy nézzék újra az eredetit, na AZ parás!

Nem is tudom hirtelen, hová lőjjem be a végső pontozást: összességében nem amortizálta le az agysejtjeimet annyira mnt az ultragagyi Szem remake Alba kisasszonnyal, viszont a '74-es Hooper verzióhoz képest iszonyat gyenge (bár akik látták az eredetit, azoknak nyilván nem mondok újat). Ha behatóbban szeretnétek megismerkedni a Bőrpofa-mitológiával, akkor az ismerkedést ne ezzel, hanem a korábbi változattal kezdjétek! 6.5/10

Set in early 20th century Austria, it's a story about a workman's boy (Norton) who has a childhood romance with the obviously out of reach Duchess Sophia. Of course, they are ordered not to see each other. After wandering the countryside for 15 years, the boy, now a man, returns as an accomplished magician. Only to find the love of his life engaged to the evil prince.

Not exactly breaking any conventions here. But....

The Denver Post is impressed:

All this might be hokum if the talented cast didn't take things seriously and play their roles to the hilt. Norton is captivating, as always, playing the troubled genius. Rufus Sewell drips contempt as the arrogant prince, Paul Giamatti is a likable inspector and Jessica Biel is radiant as the fairy-tale princess.

Well, of course she is. Plus, it's fun for the whole family.

But, guys, don't forget, Power Blue opens in December!

You know I always thought I should like Jessica Biel because two seperate people have told me that I look a bit like her.  That make us like sisters!  Kind of. 

However, I think next time someone says I look like her I'll have to say: "Excuse me but I don't have a Michael Jackson nose job and over-inflated collegen lips.  Also if when I get the Harper's Bazaar cover I will not let them photoshop the life out of my face!"
