"Athough he is fully conversant with the tenor tradition of Hawkins, Byas, Webster and Young, it has often been remarked how close in spirit Griffin's playing is to that of Charlie Parker. The headlong rush of ideas, and the rhythmic variety and freedom that go with them, all point in this direction. In addition his tone combines a vocalised sound with a slightly hysterical edge that, at his best, can evoke almost uncontrollable exhileration -except perhaps for other tenor players, since Griffin is one of the fastest and most accurate ever on his instrument." - Brian Priestley, Jazz- The Rough Guide, 1995.

Here's Johnny... with one of the few tenorists who could keep up with him: Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis (1921-1986). Johnny's the one on the left who solo's second.

I’m off to Summer school tomorrow. This particular course has taken place in Wales for a good

I'm off to Summer school tomorrow. This particular course has taken place in Wales for a good 30 years, but this year its in London. What's caused the move I'm not sure - I've heard various versions but not sure the full story is out. My number of attendances over the years rank in double figures ... the mid teens I think.. such that I think of this as my Jazz 'family holiday'.

The link and the list of tutors for this year is below - what a roll call. Some of the best and most exciting players on the British scene will be there so some powerful playing and jamming is a guarantee never mind the students! . A few paras on learning and then I'm off to pack my bag!

What drew me there originally was the desire to make a sound something like I was just learning to love on CD, but more often live on the local jazz scene in Bristol. I'm a bit slow on the uptake, so it took me quite a while to realise that I was never going to hear that magic 'trick' that would suddenly mean I could 'do it'. That's not to say that I haven't learnt an enormous amount over the years, but translating it into something that happens when I play is definitely a never ending journey; mainly perspiration rather than inspiration.

So now, the most valuable thing I've got is some insights into how to improve and learn new things for myself; many friends, many magical moments and a fair bit of inspiration.

Lets see what this year brings!

You can also download the programs as MP3 files, and it occurs to me that the length (just under an hour) make them ideal for an accompanient to a one-hour walk. :)

This week’s top 5 is going to count down the 5 greatest beat machines. You know I love Rock,

This week's top 5 is going to count down the 5 greatest beat machines. You know I love Rock, so if you are wondering why (rightly so) all the drummers are not jazz drummers, you already have your answer. The criteria? It's whoever I say it is. If you feel I have left someone out, feel free to leave your selection in the comments.

Honorable Mention:

John Bonham - His solo on Moby Dick is by far the most notorious rock drum solo! And he played with a wooden kick mallet. The version linked to his name is a live version that's quite different from the studio version.

Phil Collins - Could have and almost did make my top 5 list. Musically, he is probably the most talented of everyone mentioned in this blog entry. It's almost impossible to make a top 5 list with this much talent out there. IT'S NOT FAIR!

Stewart Copeland of The Police - Stewart took several disciplines and genres (punk, classic rock, reggae, Arabic percussion) and rolled them into Rock and Roll! He could be a little frenetic, but nobody questions his talent. I love listening to his live versions of "Message in a Bottle" and "Can't Stand Losing You".

#5Jeff Porcaro of Toto - Some say he was the best rock drummer. He could have very well been the best. Of course, he is most famous for his Rosanna shuffle beat, but he had more to offer than one trick!

#4 Neil Peart of Rush - The best way to describe Peart is big. This guy is pure ROCK and his kit was sweet. If you want to learn Rock and Roll drumming, grab "A Work In Progress". This is the ultimate in dissecting the drummers role and the drum part.

#3 Carter Beauford of the Dave Matthews Band - Doggonit! This dude is just incredible. Supersonic. Complex. Skilled. Talented beyond words. DMB would not be the same without this guy, IMO.

#2 Steve Gadd studio drummer for Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Jim Croce, The Manhattan Transfer, and many many others - Like the #1, Gadd was a jazz drummer, but he was a Rock Legend as a big part of one of the most notorious Jazz/Rock bands ever, Steely Dan. This guy is so smooth!

#1 Buddy Rich - The only one I could let into my top 5 who was not a Rock and Roll legend, Buddy was the greatest of the greatest drummers. He was the Pele, Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, and Bjorn Borg of the drums. He was one of the rare cases of a great musician who's fame was matched by his talent.

There you have it. Who did I leave off?

Johnny Griffin, the tenor sax great who who has been called "the fastest tenor in the west" has died, reports the Los Angeles Times.

From The Times: Johnny Griffin, the tenor saxophonist known as the "Little Giant," whose big, rich sound and lightning speed made for a distinct musical signature during an era when bebop was king, has died. He was 80. Griffin died Friday at his home in France, his agent, Helene Manfredi, told Bloomberg News. The cause was not reported. Though he was often called the "world's fastest saxophonist," Griffin -- who jammed with such greats as Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Art Blakey -- did not see speed as the key element of his playing. "Everybody called me a racehorse, but feeling good is my thing," Griffin said in a 1995 Times article. "Art Blakey used to say to me, 'You fire that [saxophone] like it's a machine gun.' I'd say, 'Yeah, man, but those are pellets of love.' " Griffin is credited with helping to spark renewed interest in bebop in the 1970s, with performances at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1975, in Tokyo in 1976 and throughout the U.S. in the latter part of the decade. "He was very original," said drummer Louis Hayes, who performed with Griffin and many other jazz artists. Griffin "had a great knowledge of his instrument and music and . . . he had a tremendous impact on this art form we call jazz." Born John Arnold Griffin III in Chicago on April 24, 1928, Griffin grew up in a house that was often filled with music. His mother played piano and sang in the church choir; his father had played cornet. At 6, Griffin began studying the piano and later added the Hawaiian steel guitar. At DuSable High School in the 1940s, under bandmaster Capt. Walter Dyett, Griffin learned clarinet and oboe, and then the alto saxophone. His true love was the tenor sax -- a big instrument for the diminutive musician, who did not reach his final height of about 5 feet 5 until after high school. Outside of school, he played alto sax in a band with T-Bone Walker. Vibraphonist Lionel Hampton, who while visiting DuSable heard Griffin play, invited him to join his band in 1945. Griffin, who was 17, graduated on a Thursday and on Sunday began his first professional gig with one of the most celebrated musicians of the day. While playing with Hampton, Griffin switched to tenor sax. In the 1950s, he moved to New York, where he played with R&B trumpeter Joe Morris, drummers Philly Joe Jones and Jo Jones and saxophonist Arnett Cobb. Older musicians who had influenced him -- saxophonists Ben Webster, Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins -- took Griffin under their wing when he moved to the city. His friends included pianists Monk, Bud Powell and Elmo Hope. "They had so much respect for each other," Griffin said in the 1995 Times article. "I'd walk the streets of Harlem with them every day. That was my education."While serving in the Army in the early 1950s, Griffin formed a small band of his own. A colonel was impressed and ordered Griffin to be placed in the Army band -- a decision that kept him out of combat in Korea. In 1957, Griffin joined Blakey and later played in a Monk quartet. With tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Griffin co-led a quintet in the early 1960s. Their "battles," high-energy feats of improvisation, can be heard on "Tough Tenor Favorites," released in 1962. Griffin's many recordings also include "Introducing Johnny Griffin" (1956), "A Blowin' Session" (1957) with saxophonists Hank Mobley and John Coltrane, and "Change of Pace" (1961). Disheartened by the changes in jazz -- which he called "noise" -- and plagued by tax troubles, Griffin moved to Europe in the early 1960s. He lived in the Netherlands for many years and later settled in a chateau in southwest France. In Europe, jazz had a higher profile and racism a lesser presence, he said. But beginning in 1978, with a performance with saxophonist Dexter Gordon, he returned regularly to the United States to perform and celebrate his birthday. In a review of a 1978 concert, then-Times critic Leonard Feather called Griffin "a hard-driving performer with a crackling energetic sound and the ability to create flawlessly swinging lines that never let up." In later years, Griffin, who was also a composer, often performed with his longtime drummer, Kenny Washington. Griffin's album "Smokin' Sax" was released Tuesday, according to Billboard.com. Griffin had an explanation for the speed that defined his style. "I got so excited when I played, and I still do," he once said. "I want to eat up the music like a child eating candy." - Jocelyn Y. Stewart

Tapi, anak-anak tetep jalan.

Amazing!!! they document everything... and we have to learn about it.

Oxford International Review is co-hosting the Midwestern portion of the US-China Education Trust (USCET)'s Summer Institute. This US-China faculty exchange allows Chinese scholars of American studies the chance to visit Washington, DC and San Francisco and take part in the OIR program at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri. The program is an extension of our recently released OIR Volume XVIII: What Is America's Role? (Second Edition), which examines America's role in the world through the eyes of scholars and leaders from around the globe.
On Friday night the Chinese and American participants in the US-China faculty exchange explored Midwestern culture with a barbecue dinner and a night of jazz music in Kansas City. The staff at Gates Bar B.Q. were wonderful, serving up heaping portions of barbecue, beans, and coleslaw to our group.

These are my first shots from the Edinburgh Jazz Festival and I'm happy. Apart from anything else this signals the start of all the festivals that make up the Edinburgh Festival (there is really no such thing as the Edinburgh Festival it is many, many festivals that all occur at about the same time) and a near unlimited source of events/concerts/shows to photograph.

BY Marvin

Kolektyw Etopiryna is a Nu jazz band from Poland that corporates elements of rock, funk, and avant-garde jazz into their musical mix. There are three free and legal albums available from Jamendo.

The End is their debut album. It simmers rather than boils, effecting a nice groove in the bass lines that grounds the album while keyboard and trumpet improvises and lends color. The first album introduces the band’s instrumentation of trumpet, keyboards, bass and drums but the second album, Underrate It adds quite a few extra instruments. It is also an atmospheric mixture of funk and jazz. Finally we return to the basic four members in Kolory Ulicy Soundtrack which is meant to accompany an comic and graffiti exhibition. It is a single 28 minute track allowing a lot of exploratory improvisation by the performers. This is the liveliest of the three albums with some good percussive work and an avant rock feel. Kolektyw Etopiryna is certainly one of the more interesting jazz groups I’ve heard from Europe recently.

The albums are available in VBR MP3 around 164 bitrate.

All courses

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." - Genesis 1:1 - GOD

All courses of life have a beginning. The beginning is perhaps the greatest part of the course. This is the point at which the course takes on life. Now, there also happens to be many courses in one's life. Some beginnings lead to ill fated courses while others lead to joy, peace, life, and truth.

What course are you on? When did it begin? Are you at peace?

SWAT Music, Inc. is experiencing another beginning right now. For example, this blog is the beginning to yet another avenue that God has set before SWAT Music to utilize and reach out to souls that God has selected. SWAT Music recently restructured the SWAT Music, Inc. website in order to start out on a fresh course of action. Many times God has a unique way of detouring us to new courses in life. Those new courses give us opportunities to exhibit the lessons we have learned from previous courses. The new courses give us opportunities for new beginnings. Perhaps God is directing you to a new beginning in your life. Mighty creations have beginnings.

So the wife is out with the girls tonight so I figured I'd sit down with a nice glass of port and update my blog a little since, keeping with the trend, it's been a while. Speaking of Port though that reminds me of our day of drinking at the 30th Annual Playboy Jazz Festival. The Wife, our friends Cyndi and Jeff and of course myself packed up picnic baskets full of lunch for the day and went for the first time. We had a blast and spent very little time sitting in the bleachers where our seats were watching the show. Most of our day was spent on a blanket under trees eating cheese, meats, brie mango cassadillas, chocolate covered strawberries and lots and lots of wine. I recommend it for everyone! The reggae festivals are the only place you might meet a nicer group of pot smoking, drinking, music loving people. The music was great and for my first time at the Hollywood bowl that place is a beautiful venue. Through out the day we meet all kinds of really nice people. There was the lady dresses like an aba zaba (probably the least nice person there but she gets points for looking like a giant candy) There was the man with the freezer bag full of pot who was trying to give it out. There was the hippy protesters who didn't want to give up their bench (dam the man) and of course I can't go to L.A. stand in a line with out some friendly gay guy making a move! So if anyone is a fan of jazz and likes to people watch that was a day well spent!

Hard-bop saxophonist Johnny Griffin died this morning in Availles-Limouzine, France. He was 80 years old. Diminutive in stature (he stood 5'5") but large in sound, Griffin was a technically gifted player who displayed dazzling speed and remarkable touch on his instrument. He showed more sensitivity with a ballad than could rightly be expected of a man once called "the world's fastest saxophonist".

Griffin was an up-and-comer around the time be-bop was breaking out in the late 40's, and he was deeply influenced by the style of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. The lightning fast tempo of be-bop was never far from his sound, and Griffin held onto it long after other artists had abandoned it for newer and more profitable styles. He often offset his tremendous speed showcases with ballads and blues, but it's clear that be-bop was the rhythm of Johnny Griffin's heart beat.

He played alongside luminaries such as John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and Art Blakey, and made a number of fine albums in the 50's and 60's for Riverside and Blue Note Records. A Blowin' Session (1957) is considered his masterpiece, but we also recommend Introducing Johnny Griffin (1956) and The Little Giant (1959).

The world lost another jazz great today. Johnny Griffin may not have been a household name, but he'll be sorely missed around these parts.

Listen: The Message (from the album The Little Giant)

Just spent the night out at the Sculpture garden listening to Jazz music. The place was sooo packed; it's amazing that people bring their families and friends there to have picnic and enjoy the music. Tonight was very nice weather for it too.

Been an interesting week at work...still kind of slow, but it's good, because I'm learning. My leader gave me like a two hour "lecture" about engines and technologies that my head is sooo big now. It's funny how as an engineer, the most I ever learn about engines is Watt's steam engine. But I will be doing this super intense course on diesel engines soon, so hopefully I'll be ready to add my two cents worth to the group.

I ran off to the MAC counter today; I just had to get the Mineralize Skin Finish Duo.

I mean, from the minute I saw it, I knew I just had to have it. Yes, I know, I spent a lot of money on makeup this year...sometimes, I wonder why I didn't pursue a cosmetology degree, hehe. I mean, I did visual art and photography all through middle and high school. It's only natural that I pursue a realm of art that makes me look gorgeous too, haha. Anyways, I do have a lot of makeup, but not as much as some of the girls on Youtube...although I feel that if I do enough Youtube videos, I too will be like one of those girls. We'll all be gorgeous, but very very poor, because makeup is expensive. I think after one more trip to Sephora, I'm gonna take a break from buying stuff...although I have enough to last me like two or three years.

I did get a new yoga set today. My office has these free fitness classes, and yoga is apparently popular. I used to do yoga in high school, and now is a good time to pick up again. It's very calming, peaceful, and definitely relieves stress. Think I will poke around Youtube some more for yoga videos....

At first I thought it was a statue it was so still and then it started moving and hoping around. The fireflies where flying all around.
