Noel Gallagher, frontman of the band Oasis, said that Glastonbury was a place for traditional guitar bands and that the headliner should not be a hip hop act!!! What year are we in? Hip Hop is music just like any other genre. Music is the one thing that all people have in common. It's the universal language.

One of the best things about summer festivals these days is that even if you don't end up going to the festival that you've been waiting all year to attend, there's a good chance you still might be able to be there without actually being there. Now I know some people aren't too fond of live recordings, especially from festivals, but one of the best things about more popular festivals is that there's still a good chance you'll can download whatever performances you've missed in mp3/FLAC audio or watch practically the entire performance on any number of video websites (youtube, vimeo, dailymotion). The AT&T Blue Room does live video broadcasts for Bonnaroo, New Orleans Jazz Fest and Coachella, which is awesome when you can just maximize the video on a flatscreen and sit back and watch it with at home, instead of dealing with a bunch of Chads and Trixies in 100 degree weather.

Anyways, I'm not sure how long this will last or if this will become an annual thing, but I just thought I'd provide those who are interested in quality live mp3 recordings of bands from summer festivals. As I said before, some people just aren't fans of live recordings, but honestly I think that's bullshit because most artists tend to improvise quite a bit when they're comfortable in that energetic festival surrounding, with thousands fans cheering them on, craving more. Hell, at Bonnaroo this year, The Raconteurs played "Blue Veins" for almost ten minutes (which isn't uncommon, but still pretty insane), and My Morning jacket performed for something like three or four hours.

I've provided links to those two performances as well as live recordings from Coachella, Bonnaroo and Glastonbury. Just a few of the recordings have a couple of songs cut off because of the live BBC and Blue Room recordings, and some are just one single mp3. Sorry for the inconvenience there, but it's the best I could do. Check back in a few weeks for Pt. 2, after I've made it through Rock the Bells, Forecastle and Lollapalooza. And I'll definitely update if I come across any more interesting downloads from these festivals or anything from Rock Werchter or Roskilde.

The choice was simple enough. The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain at the Lichfield Festival or stay in and watch the last episode of this series of Dr Who.

Despite the first genuine cliff-hanger of this hugely disappointing series, the Ukuleles always held a far greater pull than the Daleks.

The only way we were going to miss the Ukulele Orchestra was an act of God - which was entirely possible, I suppose, as they were appearing at Lichfield Cathedral - or if illness claimed either of us.

But nothing stood in our way of our date with the Ukuleles and a precious night out. And having watched the recorded Dr Who finale after returning from the Cathedral, the Ukuleles completely eclipsed the Daleks.

It was my first encounter with the Orchestra, having been encouraged along by Rachel, and from the moment that Teenage Kicks filled the Cathedral I was hooked - nothing comes close to The Undertones' original, not even the McFly cover (!), but the Ukulele Orchestra's version runs Fergal's boys a close second.

Throw in a bit of Anarchy in the UK, Wuthering Heights, Good Gave Rock and Roll to You and wistful Teenage Dirt Bag and I was converted. The musicianship and humour complemented each other perfectly.

The highlight of this impressive and entertaining performance had to be the Orchestra's rendition of the Theme from Shaft, complete with an Isaac Hayes-style drawl straight outta South Yorkshire.

An excellent night and a great setting for a show that deservedly earned a standing ovation.

As for Dr Who, I don't think I'll bother.

My venerable former colleague on The Birmingham Post, Sid Langley, summed up the hugely disappointing finale with a Twitter update complete with the description "cop out".

This series will be Russell T Davies' last and I think he might have fallen into the trap so many much-loved professional footballers and rugby players have - one season too many.

We're still left to speculate on the identity of the new Doctor after David Tennant cheated death in a most unsatisfactory way. There will be a new Time Lord, we just have to wait until after the Christmas special and until Russell T's replacement gets his feet firmly under the desk.

But I'll stick with last week's suggestion that Jay-Z, fresh from uniting the diverse masses at Glastonbury, would make the perfect new Time Lord - he got 99 problems, but the Ood ain't one.

It needs to be something different to shake Dr Who from this stumbling series.

Game, set and match to the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and the excellent Lichfield Festival.

Mediatakeout reports that Jay-Z had a big confrontation with a reporter after he gave him a bad review on his Glastonbury Performance. Reports clam that Jay-Z had to check the reporter for not recognizing it as the history making event it was. I don't know what to say about this one. It seems a little shaky. I could see how Jay-z would be mad because it was unanimous that he gave a historic performance. But I could see on the other hand how he could just look at the reporter and laugh. Cheers to the Roc! We'll see if anymore info pops up on this one....
