No obstante, parece que la apuesta de futuro de Apple se ve confirmada por varios hechos.

En primer lugar destacan las imágenes y vídeos aparecidos en Internet que muestran un port no oficial del conocido juego Quake 3 Arena para el iPod Touch. Éste software requiere una gran cantidad de recursos hardware para funcionar debidamente en una computadora de sobremesa, pero las imágenes mostraban un desempeño muy fluido en el pequeño aparato de Apple. Lo más probable es que si se llega a materializar un aumento del número de títulos y su calidad disponibles para iPhone e iPod, estos sean distribuidos a través de la iTunes Store, la tienda online de Apple que bate récords cada día que pasa.

It is widely expected that Jobs will use that speech to unveil the next generation of iPhones, including a so-called 3G model.

"The launch of the new model is imminent," wrote Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster in a report to clients Monday.

Munster notes that beginning Saturday, May 10, first generation iPhones were unavailable through Apple's online store in the United States, the most recent sign that the company is clearing inventory in advance of a new release. (Two days earlier, O2 ran out of iPhones in the United Kingdom.) On Sunday Munster called 11 Apple retail stores to check on their supply; five were completely out of stock and one of the remaining six had fewer that five phones on hand.

Munster also alerted his clients to the discovery, first reported over the weekend by MacRumors, of a switch in the latest release of the iPhone 2.0 firmware that will allow users to toggle 3G data ON for faster download speeds or OFF to conserve battery life.

Despite dwindling supplies, Munster still estimates that Apple will ship 1.7 million iPhones in the quarter that ends June 30. That's because he expects Apple to start shipping the new model in large numbers before the end of the month.

Other signs -- including the release of the new Software Developers Kit scheduled for late June and an AT&T Mobile (T) memo canceling staff vacations between June 15 and July 12 (see here) -- point to Friday, June 27, as the day the new model will go on sale. That would give Apple four days of 3G iPhone sales before the quarter closes.

"Net-net," writes Munster, "the initial surge of iPhone sales in June would likely offset the lost sales due to limited availability in May."

The drumroll has already started on Apple's (AAPL) website, where users can download a Dashboard widget counting down the hours before the June 9 WWDC by the days, hours, minutes and seconds.

And according to Cisco (CSCO), the iPhone business plan seems to be marching along. On an earnings call with analysts last week, Cisco chief John Chambers said the new iPhone has some of Cisco's office network security system loaded on. "The upcoming software version 2 for the iPhone incorporates Cisco's VPN technology," Chambers said.

Having the networking giant involved with Apple's business play certainly can't be comforting to RIM.

Another potentially unsettling development is Nokia's (NOK) upcoming plan to offer a series of BlackBerry lookalikes through AT&T. The new phones, starting with the E71, will also work with Microsoft Exchange and use a Nokia managed e-mail server, a delivery and security system akin to the BlackBerry approach, says one source familiar with the plan.

BlackBerry fans have seen threats like this before. Good Technology had a popular business e-mail system favored by Palm (PALM) Treo users. Motorola (MOT) acquired Good in 2006, and so far has failed to make much added headway against RIM. If anything, RIM's one-trick killer-app ability to deliver instant, secure e-mail has been extended beyond professionals to consumers attracted by the sleeker phone designs, GPS navigation, music players and cameras.

On Monday, RIM announced a plan to start a $150 million venture capital fund to spur development of applications on the BlackBerry platform. The move - made along with RBC and Thomson Reuters - is similar to the $100 million venture effort that Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers announced in March to develop software for Apple's iPhone.

A good part of RIM's success is reflected in the stock's rise, which has so far defied the slowing economy and sluggish corporate information technology spending. But the new product delay coupled with arrival of Apple and Nokia's BlackBerry killers, may challenge RIM's perennial winner status.

To be sure, a lot can be made of BlackBerry's huge sales opportunities overseas where RIM has a very good chance of repeating the business e-mail success it had in the United States. And some RIM analysts see some big promise in the a crop of new BlackBerries coming out in the coming months.

TD Newcrest analyst Chris Umiastowski points to two phones in the works that should help restart the BlackBerry sales cycle.
