sudo apt-get install tor

The image you see above is of me (Hank the Bank) and Tinmaker doing it big in the desert. You wanna roll hard like us? Want to party at the hottest places in town like us? Eat at the swankiest places in town like us? Well, you're in luck. We'll tell you how it's done here in a basic cost by cost rundown of our trip. Buckle up your seatbelts folks, because we're heading into bat country! As we already discussed here, here, and here, transportation and lodging has been taken care of. Now, comes the fun part.

We aimed for value on this trip, so we didn't actually eat and party at the hottest places in town, but we weren't no drifters either. Through some strategic fund allocation we managed to live bigger than our budget, and here's how.

Day 1:
8 a.m. - Head out on the road and grab some McD's breakfast and coffee for about $5. We're huge fans of the iced coffee, so this isn't a real minus for us.
11:30 a.m. - Pull into the Terrible's gas station at Primm and fuel up. Bring your $20 in to sign up for some free play! Read more about it here.
Noon - 7 p.m. - Fight hunger with crippling gambling addiction to penny slot machines (ahem, schedule intervention for Tinmaker) with $20 free play.
7 p.m. - Feast on the awesome $7.99 prime rib deal offered at any of the casinos in the "Terrible's Holy Trinity." You can see Tinmaker's "leftovers" below. Word of advice, never have any "leftovers" in Primm.

(Hank the Bank: I know what you're thinking, "Is this Tinmaker's food, or the remains of a crime scene?")
(Tinmaker: It's better than it actually looks, I promise!)

With a tip, that's about $10. That's $15 for food and fun on Day 1! We're just getting started!

Day 2
10:30 a.m. - Begrudgingly arise from the dead after a hard night of prime ribbing. Make sure you make the check out time at noon. Since Primm Valley is essentially retirement heaven, you'd best give yourself some extra time.
1 p.m. - Head over to The Orleans and kill some time. DON'T WORRY! You're not staying there. Whew, huh? Just trust us, you'll thank us in a few hours. Spend some time "gambling" and take advantage of the cocktail waitresses roaming around to barter their watered down drinks for your stingy one-dollar tip. Take your time with this champ, with our budget, you got about $10 to spare and that's it.

(Hank the Bank: The Orleans isn't half bad. They have everything a lower-middle class family could ask for on a business trip except convenience to the actual Strip. So basically, a great place if only it wasn't located in Vegas.)
(Tinmaker: Agreed. There was a bowling alley, an arcade, an events center, and don't forget the oversized cartoon alligator statutes at the entrance!)

6:30 p.m. - Head in to the The French Market Buffet in the Orleans. It's pretty decent priced at about $14, so $17 with tax and tip. Spend some time there to make up for the other meals you've missed. Vegas is a marathon, not a sprint, and you've been walking so catch up here.

(Hank the Bank: As you could probably tell, Tinmaker was too distracted by the food to actually take a quality picture)
(Tinmaker: Don't judge me.)

8:30 p.m. 9 p.m. 9:30 p.m. - Done yet? Are you sure this time? OK. Now that you've gotten your fill (and then some!), make your way to the casino where the word "renovation" doesn't exist! Imperial Palace!

(Hank the Bank: Just when I thought you couldn't get any dumber, you go and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself!)
(Tinmaker: Yes, there are no windows in the front of the hotel. Don't worry, it's friendlier than it looks!)

10 p.m. - So, you're probably thinking why the hell should you stay at the ol' IP, right? Well in addition to it being $40 a night as discussed earlier, we also tried the "sandwich" trick, also mentioned earlier. You slip $20 between your credit card and ID and ask if there are any "complimentary upgrades." A lot of winking involved. That in itself is a gamble. The bright side is, if it works, you have a suite instead of a regular "deluxe room." If it doesn't, you got 20 more bones to throw around town. Or, of course, you might crap out and not get the room upgrade or the money back. Your call.
10:30 p.m. - For the sake of conversation, let's just say you got the room. Spend the rest of the night enjoying your nice little suite for $40 a night. Hard earned, we know.

(Photo: Hank the Bank and Tinmaker chilaxin' like ballers in their suite. That's right playa, suite.)

Day 3
11 a.m. - Rise up! You need to make the most of your last day. Head to the strip and grab yourself a $5 all day bus pass for the Deuce, a double-decker that treks up and down the Strip every 10 minutes or so. You're going to need it if you want to head to Fremont Street, aka the land of cheap stuff.

(Hank the Bank: Time is probably the most expensive price you pay when riding the Deuce, but good thing we had plenty of it.)
(Tinmaker: Best part of the Deuce: sitting on the top and pretending to drive. Vrroooooom!!!)

Noon - Make your way to Mermaids casino for some $1 Nathan's hotdogs and 99 cent daiquiris. Get your fill on, maybe about $10 in whatever combination you want. When you're nice and buzzed, enjoy the history and old-schoolness that Fremont Street has to offer. You got Binions, 4 Queens, Golden Nugget, etc. After you've done that, hop back on the Deuce for a ride home to the IP.

(Hank the Bank: Not pictured: Fried Oreos and fried Twinkies. This place has the basics of any county fair.)
(Tinmaker: Barf. Fried Oreos is NOT a substitute for dinner no matter what universe you're in.)

5 p.m. - Now that you're back on the Strip, take a stroll through the Grand Canal Shoppes in the Venetian, then make your way to the Forum Shops at Caesars. Window shopping is a broke man's best friend. Well, that and money. Don't forget to hit up the lounges if it's a weekday. Tao at The Venetian and 40/40 at the Palazzo don't have a cover on weekdays. Score! Well, I mean you're probably not, but IT'S definitely a score though, right?
8:30 p.m. - You're probably starving now. Lucky for you, our strategic planning has placed you at the right place and at the right time. You'll see a Planet Hollywood restaurant at the Forum Shops, not too far from the escalators. Walk up there with this here coupon:

(Photo: Coupon in first pic. Feast for two in second pic.)

Hopefully, at this time, the dinner rush has already started. Ask the snooty hostess if you can just eat at the bar, or if you really want to get your hobo status on, take it to go. Order something around $15 or so and grab a free appetizer. Get the hell out of there.

9:15 p.m. - Now that you're back within the safe confines of your suite, turn on the water and pour in the bubbles to your tub. Head over to the balcony to see if there are any other voyeurs. After that, close the blinds and enjoy your better-than-expected-meal with a nice bubble bath. Some times in life, you just gotta treat yourself.

When it's all said and done, the budget looks like this:

Day One: $15 for McD's breakfast, prime rib at Primm
Day Two: $17 for buffet at The Orleans
Day Three: $35 for fun on Fremont Street, Planet Hollywood feast, and all-day bus pass

Comes out to $67, plus the $20 "sandwich" trick, and that gives you $13 to spend on drinks ($1 tips for the waitress for bring you drinks when you're "gambling." Use this whenever suitable.)

The best thing about Vegas is, you don't necessarily need money to have a good time. There are a lot of free things you can find to do like random lounges and hot spots. $100 doesn't seem like much, but it can take you a long way. We found some good value out of this trip, but this post doesn't do it justice. That's why we'll do a photo essay post with captions later this week.

That's it for this edition.

Gabriela Women's Party Rep. Luzviminda Ilagan condemns the massive military operations and human rights violations against the Aetas of Porac and Floridablanca, Pampanga, where the 72nd Infantry Battalion and the 3rd Brigade of the Armed Forces of the Philippines have been deployed since July 10 as part of the Investment Defense Force scheme of the Arroyo government.

“The deployment of military troops in indigenous communities under the guise of protecting the national economy but at the expense of the IPs is ridiculous. It is unlawful as it violates the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), which state that the rights of indigenous cultural communities should never be compromised for the sake of development,” Ilagan said in a press conference with the Kalipunan ng Katutubong Mamamayan ng Pilipinas (KAMP).

The Mindanaoan solon pointed out that it is not only the Aetas of Pampanga who experience state-perpetrated abuses. Since the Revitalization of the Minerals Industry Program was launched in 2004 and 18 indigenous territories were selected to be part of the 24 priority mining areas in the Philippines, complaints of human rights violations committed against indigenous peoples have increased.

“In Mindanao, for example, the Lumads of Compostela Valley and Subanens of Zamboanga del Norte are being pushed away from their homes by the easement rights granted to foreign mining firms by the Arroyo government.
According to a prediction by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), it is

According to a prediction by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), it is reported that more than 85 per cent of the available addresses on the internet have been allocated and the remaining will run out by 2011. Thus internet world may face this doomsday inn exactly 1,273 day.

The web addresses I am talking about refer to the numerical Internet protocol (IP) addresses that denote individual devices connected to the Internet. They are unique to every system and are basic for all online communications, from e-mail and web pages to voice chat and streaming video.

Whenever you type the web address of any website, the browser actually search the IP address for that site from a big telephone book, commonly called a “Domain Name Server” (DNS). Say if you type www.google.com your browser will ask DNS the IP address for it and in return 216.239.39.99 will be sent by DNS to your browser. Your browser then heads off to Google’s website using the IP address as a map.

This doomsday can lead to a slower internet speeds and new connections and services (such as Internet phone calling) will either be expensive or simply impossible to obtain. The solution to the shortage is to upgrade to a new address protocol.

The Internet protocols are prepared by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), a large open international community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers working for the smooth operation of the Internet. The current IP address scheme, called Internet Protocol Version 4 (Ipv4), was introduced in 1981. At that time there were hardly 500 computers connected to the Internet. The address makers at that time allowed for four billion addresses, thinking they would last forever. But they have been nearly gobbled up in just under 30 years!

But no worries…..as the IETF are already prepared for the doomsday. A replacement system, called IPv6, had been devised as a solution more than a decade ago, providing enough addresses for billions upon billions of devices as well as improving Internet phone and video calls, and possibly even helping to end e-mail spam.

But still the problem doesn’t end with it. It was reported that the new system is not really compatible with the Internet of today. Taking the same example of Google, if it wants to support the new system IPv6, a whole new IPv6 web service will be needed to build, complete with new domain names, servers and bandwidth. The costs run into billions.

The OECD was quoted “immediate costs are associated with deployment of IPv6, whereas many benefits are long-term and depend on a critical mass adopting it”.

You can have a look at the countdown clock for the doomsday at penrose.uk6x.com.

Two stories that have appeared in the last week have presented the argument that the mainstream indu

Two stories that have appeared in the last week have presented the argument that the mainstream industries rely on pirates in various ways. The first is about a company called BigChampagne which collects data on P2P transfers and sells them to whoever is interested. The Economist notes that a number of major players in the movie and music industry use these stats for their own marketing efforts. P2P blog picks up the story and says this about it:

Up until now it wasn't too clear who is actually making use of these measurements though, since most mainstream media companies were a little shy to admit that they actually rely on piracy.

These sentence made me chomp at the bit. Main stream media rely on this data? Really?

The second story is slightly more strange and complicated. In brief, Ubisoft released a patch for the legally downloaded version Rainbow Six which broke the game a little. As a work-around Ubisoft UK went and found a no-CD crack made by a pirate company 'Reloaded' and allowed users to download it to solve the problem caused by the legal-download version of the DRM. Generally, no-CD cracks are illegal because they bypass digital rights management (DRM) or technological protection measures (TPMs) and using them is illegal, inter alia, because they allow a user to play a game they don't have the license for. For more details see the story on Torrentfreak, Ars Technica or The Inquirer.

For this story Ars and TorrentFreak have got under my skin. Ars has this to say:

The fact is that illegally-obtained games often run better than their legal counterparts, and this fact is in no way lost to the hardcore gamers who wish to continue to support the industry, but feel punished for paying for their games. When the legal version feels crippled, and the illegal copies are easier to run, something is very, very wrong.

To substantiate the 'often' Arts presents two examples. Two from the how-ever-many games that have been released with DRMs or TPMs?

The reason these stories have got under my skin is that they're asserting the pirates are doing the industries a huge favour while the industries persecutes them for their good work. The pirates and their corresponding "interest groups" are playing the victim the card. The reality is that the best case is that industries use pirates on very very rare occasions and only to small degrees. The assertion that the industries 'rely' on pirates is simply not supported by the evidence. As a frequent gamer who (I suppose) could be called a 'hardcore gamer' - to uses Ars' language - I can vouch for the fact that illegally downloaded software is a pain in the arse and that legally downloaded/purchased software is infinitely easier to use. This is especially the case for gaming on-line, which is almost the defintion of hardcore gaming. DRMs in the form of unique CD keys or systems like Steam simply work.

What I want to know is why these news organisations are being so silly. I get that TorrentFreak admits to a bias, but Ars claims:

[A]t Ars, "opinion" never devolves into dogma; we strive for measured judgments and carefully relayed contexts.

So why not report these stories as the amusing anecdotes they are rather than trying to turn them into some kind of pirate's manifesto or claim to be the victim of the big band industry?

When people think about security and IP traffic, they typically think about digital rights managemen

When people think about security and IP traffic, they typically think about digital rights management (DRM), and all the attendant connotations that come with it. However, there are really two different types of security to consider: DRM that secures the content itself, and network security, which secures the transport of IP packets.

In the second category, Motorola announced today that the company has achieved “Manufacturer Certificate Authority” status from CableLabs for DOCSIS 3.0 products. What that means is Motorola is certified to provide security keys and certificates for all DOCSIS equipment, from DOCSIS 1.0 through DOCSIS 3.0.

Aside from the fact that security in DOCSIS systems is important, the news is interesting in the context of Motorola’s history as a provider of conditional access (CA) technology. On the broadband side of the business, most folks think of Motorola for its set-tops. What is talked about less frequently in mainstream discussions is the conditional access security technology that makes those set-tops viable in an industry obsessed with protecting its content. The CA technology used to be embedded in set-tops, but is now effectively separated through the deployment of CableCARDs. In any case, it is a huge piece of what made Motorola successful in the cable world.

On the DOCSIS front (mainly modems today) security is certainly as important it is in set-tops. For the entertainment industry it is becoming even more so as more content is delivered over IP. How should content providers deliver that security? It certainly starts with the network.

The music industry (and increasingly film and game industries; books to follow) have been aggressive

The music industry (and increasingly film and game industries; books to follow) have been aggressive in the extreme in defending their IP rights. Many commentators believe that they are short-sightedly fighting the inevitable forces unleashed by technology.

There's great merit in the view that the technology changes should have changed the rules of the game. That global IP laws should be reformed to remove the monopoly rights of IP owners. It's clearly wrong that downloadable music still costs pretty much what CD's did ten years ago; whilst the distribution costs are negligible. There's something deeply unpleasant about the RIAA (and its equivalents in other countries) taking grannies and kids to court for downloading. There's something deeply false in their ridiculous claims that downloading 1000 tunes via p2p is robbing them of £1000 of revenue. Yet courts are upholding such nonsense.

We've heard ministers and industry representatives stating that downloading a tune illegally is no different to stealing from a shop. This is nonsense; once a physical item has been stolen, noone can buy it; and all its production costs are lost. With infinitely downloadable content, this just doesn't apply.

There's a lot to be said for alternative models; give music away but sell tickets to concert, sell merchandise, sell special editions, sell access to performers, charge to join fan clubs, etc.

The futurists feel that the music industry would do better to pioneer this rather than fight it. These people see the music industry as head-in-the-sand laggards; naysayers; fools who are trying to fight inevitable forces.

On the other hand, what's going on here could be seen as the music industry being just as visionary as the rest of us. They're just trying to make sure that as the game is redefined, they are fighting tooth and nail to try to set the rules. They know what's coming and also know that they need the strongest possible going-in position if they are to maximise what they get out of the new world. The longer they hold it off; the more they spend on pushing their current position; the better their position will be when things do change.

Of course, this just makes it all the more important to fight them. Never underestimate the intelligence of your opponents - if it looks like they're doing something stupid, it's usually because they know something you don't.

Look at this sign:

The sign above is showing your internet address, the interweb service you are running, your operating system and the internet browser you are using. When you are online, there is a great deal of information about you that just hangs out there for someone to pick up.

For example:

Have you ever looked at the left hand side of your screen when you are search Google? There will be ads for your area. Mine say things like, 'Buy a home in Sacramento!' They know that I am surfing from Sacramento because of that 10 digit number above. The XX.XXX.XX.XXX number that Mr. McCain (which who should be holding the sign at this moment. It rotates through the candidates) is holding is registered to an area of the country that can be referenced by the ad software.

So what else do they know about us? Cookies. They know about cookies. Cookies are little text files that are stored on your computer so a website can more quickly identify you. For example, you check your mail and go to bed. You wake up and power your system on and go to your e-mail site. It usually at least remembers your name. All it did was read a cookie on your system. These same cookies can be used to track your internet usage and send it back to companies to try and further evaluate your habits.

Now when it comes to cookies tracking me, I used to believe that it was absolutely wrong and I would do anything to stop it. I would wipe out my cookies every 15 minutes and routinely purge my browsing history. But then I got to thinking: Why not make it harder to figure me out? So now I get online, go to Woot, then to the Starbucks website, surf on over to AARP and pull up a few articles. From there I head to my favorite bodybuilding website for albino midgets and wrap it up with a trip through the Green, Libertarian, Reconstructive Monarchist site just for good measure. All in all, it make me feel better.

And so it goes.

rådighed for borgerne.

“A Pussy So Tight, No Dick Penetrates”
Now now, uninitiated souls will fail to recognize

"A Pussy So Tight, No Dick Penetrates"

Now now, uninitiated souls will fail to recognize that the above statement is a mnemonic for OSI model.

Every first letter of each word in the above sentence corresponds to the first letter of each OSI layer.

A - Application Layer (Layer 7)

P - Presentation Layer (Layer 6)

S - Session Layer (Layer 5)

T - Transport Layer (Layer 4)

N - Network Layer (Layer 3)

D - Data Link Layer (Layer 2)

P - Physical Layer (Layer 1)

A mnemonic is a memory aid that helps people to remember things (generally set of items) which are sometimes too difficult to remember as such because they are meaningless. So the idea is to associate the list of items to some thing which can be easily remembered, generally a sentence or may be picture(s).

Flashback. I was in Class 11th when they first introduced me to the idea of computer networking and started scaring me with TCP/IP protocol and OSI Model. Anyone who is unfortunate enough to have attended even the introductory class on networking will recall that what TCP/IP and OSI are to networking is what Ram and Sita are to Ramayana. Yeah, but its not like TCP/IP and OSI are also married to each other or something, just that they are the most important stuff. I hope you guys get the point or else forget it.

So a dedicated student that I was then and am even till now, I had a hard time remembering even the names of the seven layers, let alone trying to understand what they did. Our computer teacher, who was/is so fat that he would have easily been selected to play one of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park or Manfred - the Mammoth in Ice Age, offered his help with a stupid mnemonic of his. It was something like "Aaj Phir Se Tujhe Nahi Dekha Principal". The mnemonic is meaningless, stupid, gay and I had to try harder to even remember this mnemonic.

2nd Year, Computer Engineering, Computer Networks course: I was again defeated by the OSI layer names but this time I had the power of internet. By that time, I had pretty much convinced myself with the notion that we don't need to memorize anything because this is the the information age and all knowledge was handy and easily accessible. But I needed to pass the exams and so I went to God for help. From there I got the tight-pussy-dick-penetration mnemonic. I was so happy. It had everything that comprised my research interests, tight pussy, dick and penetration. This mnemonic stuck to my mind forever like sexual abuse by parents/relatives sticks to the mind of children. I had no problem in remembering the OSI layers and things have been better since then.

Another OSI model mnemonic which has some truth and caught my interest is:

All People Say They Never Download Porn

Very true!

If you look on the net, you will find mnemonics for everything. Like to remember meaningless names of nine planets, use this:

Mercury - Venus - Earth - Mars - Jupiter - Saturn - Uranus - Neptune - Pluto

My Very Easy Method : Just Set Up Nine Planets

(Source for the above mnemonic)

Other sources are this and this.

A similarly pronounced word is pneumonic which means lung and from which the name of the lung disease pneumonia has been derived. Don't confuse. Zara si saawdhaani, zindagi bhar aasaani.

Many are hoping especially to strike gold at the Beijing Olympic Games by using the world's largest sporting event to sell their products and services in one of the fastest growing international markets. They even have a temporary base in Beijing, the House of Switzerland. In doing so, they are displaying a very pragmatic outlook, preferring to ignore problems such as human rights abuses in Tibet in favour of their bottom line.

One has to wonder though if this approach is even worthwhile given the way the Chinese consider business. Chances are if you have a good product it will be copied and the Chinese authorities will do nothing to protect your intellectual property. Some major companies prefer to put up with this kind of piracy, betting that their sales in China will be good enough to overcome their losses to counterfeiters and makers of cheap knock-offs.

I like to look at archival photos every once in awhile. There’s something about seeing ima

by alex

I like to look at archival photos every once in awhile. There’s something about seeing images from the past that grips me. The long dead faces, and old--almost foreign--landscapes tell stories.

I was interested in this photo from 1909 instantly, two Filipino indigenous men, captives of colonized Filipino soldiers working for the Americans. One of the bound men had a look that seemed to me fearful, while the other seemed proud and defiant. The caption under the photo only told me that they were the killers of Dr. William Jones.

Who was this Dr. Jones? What was he a doctor of? What was he doing in the Phils and, presumably indigenous territory? And, of course, why was he killed?

I found more photos:

Note that they are already in chains. I presume they are posed by one of their homes. The caption under the photo read "Igorot warriors responsible for taking Dr. William Jones' head."

[*these sepia images courtesy of the University of Wisconsin]

The guy to the right (with the shorter hair) really draws me in. He looks so proud and strong--despite the injuries he seems to have sustained to his arm and ankle.

If you’ll endulge me, I discovered an interesting story when I followed the trail left by these photos.

I googled Jones and found a description of him on the Minnesota State University site (http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/information/biography/fghij/jones_william.html).

Apparently he was the first Native American to get a PhD in anthropology in the States. Jones was an Oklahoman Fox native. Pretty amazing, I thought.

"Jones was said to be a student of the Indian and Filipino races, and a friend to all indigenous peoples despite the conditions surrounding his premature death."

According to this site he died because of "a dispute over transportation... Jones was [apparently promised a number of boats], but despite his efforts, the balsas came in late and in insufficient numbers, which wore his patients thin. An angry Jones yelled and screamed at the Ilongots for not going through with their agreement. One day William exploded with rage and he did the unthinkable. He grabbed the arm of Takadan, the respected elder, and threatened to detain him until the promised balsas arrived. Soon after he was visited by 3 native men, Palidat, Magueng, and Gacad who approached him in a friendly matter about the balsas. Without warning Palidat struck Jones over his left eye with a bolo, Magueng pierced his right arm with a spear, and Gacad speared him in the abdomen. Romano, Jones' assistant, fended off one of Palidat’s bolo blows, and Jones pulled out his revolver and fired some shots, scaring off the assassins. Jones was thankful and as a token of his appreciation he gave Romano his wristwatch and gave instructions for the preservation of his notes and specimens. Jones took medicine for his wounds and he even bandaged the hand of Romano. Despite the effort, he died four hours later."

WTF?!?

First of all that's really shitty writing. Minnesota State University. Wow.

Something about that article didn't ring true to me. Why would a "friend" to indigenous people be killed over a transport dispute? The tone of the piece is also insanely one sided and makes Jones seem like a saint. But despite the problems, the little info really started to help flesh out those individuals in the photos.

So I googled some more and found: http://www.okara.com/html/headhunting.html

"Born of mixed parentage, 'more white than Indian' as Jones was heard to say while a student at Hampton University." With a good bit of self hate he earned his PhD. Soon afterward however he discovered that "more White than Indian" still made one an 'Indian' in American society. He failed to find work in his field in the US and was forced to work in the Philippines.

The following is a journal entry written about Dr. Jones about the Filipino natives he studied,

"Since the foul weather set in (October 10, 1908), this house has
been a general gathering place for the greater part of Tamsi.
The people come out of their shelters and lounge about in here
until after the morning meal. When their bellies are filled they
depart. Their aspect is most repelling. Hands, faces, and their
bodies are smeared with blotches of various kinds of dirt; and
their stiff hair is disheveled. As they sit and scratch their lousy
(a reference to lice) selves they seem more like beasts than
human beings. (Jones 1908, VII: 52 )"

This page concludes that,

"In terms of biography, while William Jones's stellar success in educational achievement was touted as an affirmation of the U.S.'s Federal Indian educational policy, his failure to distinguish between his highly judgmental moral views of his Ilongot hosts and that of purely scientific observation as an ethnologist reveal character flaws in the scientist that eventually cost him his life."

An interesting character this Dr. Jones eh? A Native that made good, but was still rejected, so he in turn goes and becomes a coloniser in mind and action in another land. All this results in his death from other natives who just couldn't tolerate his disrespect of their culture.

It says alot about what self-hate, and denial of cultural realities, can do to a man.

* * *

Now what became of the captured men you might be asking? Well... they escaped. The Americans, of course, hunted after them.

"It was the uneasiness of the colonial administration about Jones' death that goes to the heart of American-tribal relations. It came down to an uneasy equation of how to balance the apparent insult to American national pride in the slaying of Jones against American policy objectives of retaining the loyalty of Non-Christian groups. News of Jones's death was widely reported in the American press and consequently resulted in a swift retribution by the Constabulary. In a reign of terror characterized by pillaging and burning numerous Ilongot villages and their granaries, the Constabulary not only reinforced its pacification agenda (which included the cessation of headhunting) but also forced the eventual recapture of the escaped Jones' assailants by pitting one village against another."

As far as the story reads they were originally sentenced to death, only to be commuted to a lifetime of hard labour because their being "savages" did not give them enough moral competency to judge right from wrong.

This is a post I wrote long time ago in my internal blog at work and decided to publish here too, as it seems to still be current

Unless you're Brazilian or an aviation enthusiast, chances are that you have never heard about Alberto Santos-Dumont. Most people in the world would not hesitate in saying that the Wright brothers invented the airplane. However, some claim that "the only witnesses to the Wright brothers flights (...) were typically close friends and family", while "Santos-Dumont made his flights in public, often accompanied by the scientific elite of the time, then gathered in Paris" (read more about it here and here). The picture above (from Wikimedia Commons) shows one of his flights in the Bagatelle field (close to the Eiffel Tower). PBS aired "Wings of Madness", a good documentary about Santos-Dumont, last year. Here are some excerpts from the program description:

In the early 1900s, the most acclaimed celebrity in Europe, and arguably the world, was a fashionable, frail, Brazilian-born aviator named Alberto Santos-Dumont. (...)Tiring of balloons, Santos built the 14bis, an ungainly tail-first flying machine that nevertheless made the first powered airplane flight in Europe in 1906. At that time, the Wright brothers's secret early flights were widely disbelieved, so Santos and his adoring public were convinced he was the first to fly. When Wilbur made his triumphant European tour in 1908, Santos had to face the terrible realization that the Wrights were the true pioneers after all. But just before his long slide into illness began, he designed an exquisite new airplane out of bamboo: the Demoiselle, or Damselfly. One of the classic aircraft of the pioneering era, it was the true forerunner of today's ultralight planes.

An interesting aside from this discussion is that the Gartner's hype cycle around emerging technologies was already in full display mode 100 years ago: Dumont went from the technology trigger all the way to the plateau of productivity in a decade and was very hyped for a while to the point that the local Dayton Daily News in 1903 stated that the Wright brothers were emulating Dumont (Orville and Wilbur lived in Dayton):

In any case, the true answer for the question "Who invented the airplane" is: none of them. Or better yet, all of them: Orville, Wilbur, Alberto and several others pioneers, all should be credited with the invention of the airplane. We tend to like simple answers, and so we just accept that Gutenberg invented printing, Thomas Edison the light bulb and Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas. In reality, all inventions and findings in the world are composites of ideas and experiments run by several people. That's why I strongly believe that our current models governing intellectual property are outdated and preventing us from unleashing the true power of innovation. Our copyright laws are way too strict, and patents many times are inhibitors, not drivers, for new inventions.

Note that I'm not advocating that all IP protection should be dropped. However, the big accomplishment that should be awarded is not the idea, but the execution. Ideas are cheap, good implementation is the real challenge. This concept applies even in the case of artistic works like music, movies or books. Just imagine what would happen if everything was governed by a Creative Commons-like license, where anybody, everybody could share, remix and reuse whatever they want. Often times we see songs that were very flat in their original recording to become masterpieces with some novel interpretation. If we lower the barriers, even disasters could be rescued. Can you improve on "The Godfather" I and II? Unlikely. "The Godfather
III", on the other side, had some good ideas ruined by a few really lame ones. The potential for a great movie was there, but it was never realized. You're just left wondering "what if". Of course, movies are not that easy to tweak, but scripts are. I bet that the last three Star Wars movies could benefit from better writing.

It would be interesting as a social experiment to establish a 5-year moratorium on all IP-related claims and see what would happen: chaos and the-end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it or an explosion in innovation. At a minimum, this approach would help us to find out how much control is actually needed to foster innovation.

So weit so alarmierend.

Fertig is :)

Security researcher and author Kris Kaspersky plans to demonstrate how an attacker can target flaws

Security researcher and author Kris Kaspersky plans to demonstrate how an attacker can target flaws in Intel's microprocessors to remotely attack a computer using JavaScript or TCP/IP packets, regardless of what operating system the computer is running.

Kaspersky will demonstrate how such an attack can be made in a presentation at the upcoming Hack In The Box (HITB) Security Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, during October. The proof-of-concept attacks will show how processor bugs, called errata, can be exploited using certain instruction sequences and a knowledge of how Java compilers work, allowing an attacker to take control of the compiler.

"I'm going to show real working code...and make it publicly available," Kaspersky said, adding that CPU bugs are a growing threat and malware is being written that targets these vulnerabilities.

Different bugs will allow hackers to do different things on the attacked computers. "Some bugs just crash the system, some allow a hacker to gain full control on the kernel level. Some just help to attack Vista, disabling security protections," he said.
