Does that headline make sense to any of you? I liked it, so I went with it.

Anyhow, I need to stop my habit of double-tapping the enter key whenver I want to start up a new paragraph. Or maybe Wordpress needs to stop double-lining me. Ah crap, I'm already off-topic! See what freedom does to me?

All right, comics! The Walking Dead! Robert Kirkman!

What, you want more? Jeez, fine. You're kind of demanding, did you know this? It's like having a high-maintenence girlfriend that's so cute and innocent at times that you can't bring yourself to dump her. Except in this example she's also a reader of this blag (not blog, because I'm not that professional with this) and happens to uh- where was I going with this?

Oh right, zombies!

So I've been reading a lot of this awesome comicbook called The Walking Dead. Did you see the link up there? Foreshadowing. Hey, move that cursor away from your bookmarks folder! The idea behind this comic series -- which was penned by Robert Kirkman (double-foreshadowing) -- is simple: What happens at the end of all those zombie movies? Either all the survivors die or they continue to survive, but the movie ends. This takes incredibly human characters well into years of a zombie apocalypse and glances back occasionally to remind you just how much twisted shit has gone down since the first page of the comic.

Death, death and more dead-ness. People are either killing zombies or each other. Oh and sometimes zombies kill people, too. It's all very gruesome, terrible and somehow wonderful. Kirkman likes to put twists and surprises in his comics, but he doesn't try to constantly keep you guessing in traditional means. He'll throw you bones by mixing up obvious twists with incredibly-not-obvious twists. Just when you think you've got something figured out, everything goes to shit and you're burning through the pages with your eyes. Which can really be a shame, because the artwork is really awesome in The Walking Dead.

I've found myself re-reading these comics just to make sure I soak in the artwork. It's all black and white inking, but with a deft greyscale shading that gives the entire thing a very black and white movie feel. Plus, the violence really pops off the page due to the clarity that the lack of color creates. I haven't finished the series yet, but I highly reccomend it to anyone who loves either zombie stories or just great character-driven stories in general.

This is why I still read comics. While I may still indulge in the occasional Green Lantern or Iron Man comic, stuff like Invincible, The Walking Dead, Doktor Sleepless and The Sword are what keep me buying these things. More on all of those in later posts!

I hang out with a lot of very smart people but tonight was different. Tonight I was in the presence of genius.

After spending the day with other community development practitioners at a LISC Learning Forum in Detroit, including a tour and workshop in the Morningside and East English Village neighborhoods, we were treated to a remarkable dinner presentation by 93-year-old civic activist Grace Lee Boggs.

She surprised us over and over again. First, this daughter of Chinese immigrants with a Ph.D. in philosophy, who later married African-American labor activist James Boggs, well, first she introduced an 11-minute rap video by the Detroit artist Invincible, a young woman whose words burn deeply as she spits them out against a backdrop of apocalyptic post-industrial Detroit. "Selective memory, convenient amnesia," she chants, and a whole lot more.

The video features a few snippets of interview with Grace Lee Boggs and other activists, but is really about youth and how, in Boggs' words, "their need to be useful can be the foundation for life in the 21st Century." I've pasted the video, directed by Joe Namy, at the end of this post, in two parts.

I can't do justice to what came next. Ms. Boggs spoke to us, in a quiet but forceful voice, about the whole sordid history of America's industrial cities, tracing the fall of the auto industry, the construction of highways that helped cut in half the city's population, and after years of economic decline for working-class African American residents, the "young people harassed by police who they thought of as an occupying army," after all that came the five days of explosive rebellion in July of 1967 that marked the beginning of a whole new era for Detroit, an era of decline that is starkly illustrated in the Invincible video and that we saw for ourselves on our bus tour this afternoon.

From all this, Boggs sees a bright future. In 1992, Boggs and her husband founded something called Detroit Summer, which used gardening, of all things, to bring older residents together with youth, and which taught those young people, "who thought everything was instantaneous, a sense of process." The same movement spawned a youth bicycle-fixing operation, Back Alley Bikes, the Avalon Bakery that set up shop in the wreckage of the Cass Corridor, and the Earthworks urban farm created by a Capuchin monk to grow food for a soup kitchen and a home for teenaged mothers.

Detroit is among a handful of cities, including Milwaukee, New York and Chicago, that have begun converting their vast acreages of vacant land into productive agricultural space. Was it a coincidence that three groups out of eight at the afternoon workshops suggested "green" development of Detroit's east side expanses, or were we seeing the same thing that Boggs and the seniors and youth saw: the promise of Detroit's next phase? "The whole concept of reconnecting to the earth has such magic to it," she said, especially in the face of today's "energy crisis and planetary crisis."

Referring to the gardening work and the rap video, Boggs said, "we have a model and inspiration for young people across the country." For sure, yes, but the inspiration for me was Grace Lee Boggs herself, a brilliant woman who left us, tonight, with a mandate to carry her work forward.

The video, titled Locusts, part one:

As reported by the New York Times earlier today, THE WALKING DEAD and INVINCIBLE’s Robert Kirk

As reported by the New York Times earlier today, THE WALKING DEAD and INVINCIBLE's Robert Kirkman has become a corporate partner of Image Comics.

"Image Comics has been a huge part of my life for as long as it's been in existence," said Kirkman. "Being inspired by the creation of Image, I've entered into my comics career not wanting to write corporate characters as much as I've wanted to create my own. Being a partner at Image, having the chance to help run the company as well as continue to contribute strong creator-owned series to its publishing line is more than I've ever thought possible for myself. I'm very excited to have the opportunity to sit at the table across from my fellow partners, and steer the direction of comics as a whole."

Robert Kirkman began his Image Comics career in 2002 with the mini-series SUPERPATRIOT and TECHJACKET and in 2003 he debuted what would become his most famous creations, INVINCIBLE & THE WALKING DEAD. Since then he's seen much success with the Image, including having his creations turned into various forms of media such as television, statues, t-shirts and much more. This new position will have Kirkman working alongside the current Image partners, Erik Larsen, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri and Jim Valentino, to spearhead a concerted effort to restructure and strengthen Image in the coming years.

Image Publisher Eric Stephenson said, "I've known Robert since the day he submitted his first books so to see him rise this far in a relatively small amount of time has been amazing. Not only that, you'd be hard pressed to find someone more passionate about creator owned comics -- there's really no better candidate for the position."

Further information on this will be given at The Image Comics Show, Friday July 25th between 4-5 PM at the San Diego Comic Con International in room 7AB.

Nadie puede pararte. Nadie podrá cortarte tus alas de libertad mientras estés a mi lado. Nadie, ¿lo has oído?

Nadie, ¿lo has oído?

Follow through
Make your dreams come true
Don't give up the fight
You will be alright
Cause there's no one like you in the universe

Don't be afraid
What your mind consumes
You should make a stand
Stand up for what you believe
And tonight
We can truly say
Together we're invincible

A disappointing turnout as no one else showed up but Cloaked One and Sir William were accompanied by 3 Silver Knights and Ellefrin the Sith Lord/daughter of Strahd. After some foolishness with the enchanting anvil, the small team slew Dal' Goraki the demon with little trouble. With great cockiness we proceeded on to Silktong in Stone Leigh. Unfortunately, she had resurrected the entire coven of witches, who began with many a time stop spell. Over and over time stopped as we watched the witches rain down death on the party. By happy coincidence however it turned out that the Silver Knights were invincible! One by one the witches were slain in a war of attrition. Unfortunately Silktong was not to go down so easily, as she could only be struck on a "20" and regenerated all damage quickly. A plan was put into place whereby Cloaked One would leave the area, memorize 6 Searing Light spells, and return to blast her with touch spells. Unfortunately, her regeneration proved too much for even this plan, and the invincible Silver Knights were all that contained her from slaying the party. Finally in a moment of inspiration Cloaked One gated in a Balor. In a great, improbable stroke of luck, the Balor rolled a critical hit. How this happened is beyond me as it appeared that it rolled 2 consecutive 20s. Lo and behold, the Balor also wielded a Vorpal Blade, and in yet another shocking development Silktong failed her save against DC 14 and was rudely decapitated. Had this not occurred it would have been a close thing as it was apparent that Cloaked One's arsenal of spells was not quite enough to take her down, and all other melee attacks were worthless. As a result, Stone Leigh was saved from Ravenloft, Sir William and Cloaked One were proclaimed Governors of Stone Leigh, and both retired from adventuring henceforth.

Here are some good facts about the disorder.

There are four types of mood episodes that can occur in bipolar disorder, each with a unique pattern of symptoms:

- Mania
- Hypomania
- Depression
- Mixed episode

Mania symptoms: In the manic phase of bipolar disorder, feelings of heightened energy, creativity, and euphoria are common. People experiencing a manic episode often talk a mile a minute, sleep very little, and are hyperactive. They may also feel like they’re all-powerful, invincible, or destined for greatness.

But while mania feels good at first, it has a tendency to spiral out of control. People often behave recklessly during a manic episode—gambling away savings, engaging in inappropriate sexual activity, or making foolish business investments, for example. They may also become angry, irritable, and aggressive, picking fights, lashing out when others don’t go along with their plans, and blaming anyone who criticizes their behavior.

Hypomania syptoms- Hypomania is a less severe form of mania. People in a hypomanic state feel euphoric, energetic, and productive, but their symptoms are milder than those of mania and much less disruptive. Unlike manics, people with hypomania never suffer from delusions and hallucinations. They are able to carry on with their day-to-day lives. To others, it may seem as if the hypomanic individual is merely in an unusually good mood. But unfortunately, hypomania often escalates to full-blown mania or is followed by a major depressive episode.

Bipolar depression symtpoms-
- Feeling hopeless, sad, or empty.
- Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy
- Fatigue or loss of energy
- Physical and mental sluggishness
- Appetite or weight changes
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Concentration and memory problems
- Feelings of self-loathing, shame, or guilt
- Thoughts of death or suicide

Mixed episode symptoms- A mixed episode of bipolar disorder features symptoms of both mania and depression. Common signs of a mixed episode include agitation, irritability, insomnia, appetite changes, loss of contact with reality, and suicidal thoughts. This combination of high energy and low mood makes for a particularly high risk of suicide.

Matt Jones (left) pictured with the RIGHT type of white lines
For any 6 ft 6 NFL wide receiver there

[caption id="attachment_42" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Matt Jones (left) pictured with the RIGHT type of white lines"][/caption]

For any 6 ft 6 NFL wide receiver there is a great expectation that you will see a helluva lot of white lines.

To clarify that is white PAINT lines on the grass or artificial turf of the 32 NFL stadiums in the NFL, as you outstretch a 5 ft 7 corner back, or as you blaze past a slow strong safety as part of a 3 wideout offensive package.

The white lines however that Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones has been associated with this week do not belong to the end zone of Alltell Stadium, they belong to the neatly chopped strips of cocaine found in the bean pole's car.

101 catches in three NFL seasons in 42 games is what fantasy fans would call pedestrian, and Jones knows that he has not so far lived up to his pre-NFL hype. This stat line would be acceptable if Jones was a 5th round prospect or an undrafted free-agent, but that's not the case - Matt Jones was a 1st round pick in 2005, with a 1st round salary and 1st round expectations by coaches and Jags fans alike.

I think that Jones has taken to inhaling 'the paint' as a result of the Jaguars rescuing wide receiver Troy Williamson from the Minnesota Vikings, who rather coincidentally was 1) a 1st round pick who has been a bust and 2) drafted in the same 1st round in 2005.

As an avid fantasy football player I drafted Williamson in 2005 in keeper drafts, and even took my chances with him over the past two years as late www.nfl.com fantasy picks and as a waiver wire pickup. Every single time I was let down, and Williamson has managed an even more depressing 79 catches in 3 NFL seasons - yuk !

With the Rookie Symposium going on this week in sure NFL players will be using Matt Jones as an example of precisely the situation you DO NOT want to be in after three unfulfilled NFL seasons.

We have two major drug issues in sport - performance enancing and recreational. The case of Matt Jones is not performance enhancing unless he wants to grow another foot taller and play in the NBA.

Matt - I know the off season is dull with the painfully dull Brett Favre saga boring us all rigid, but even as a fan I dont turn to snorting white powder up my delicate nostrils.

If you are bored Matt I have a few suggestions;

1) Order a spicy pizza, drink a bottle of Diet Coke, and watch Invincible

2) Do some community charity work - and that doesn't mean raising the profile of anti-drug groups !

3) Go to your multi-million dollar facilities more often and learn to block and catch in order to lock down a starting job and get more than 33 catches a season - a nice total for a running back or a non-elite tight end, but not acceptable for a 1st round wideout.

I'll sign off this entry with the thought - who is the BIGGEST bust from the 1st round of the NFL draft - Troy Williamson WR or Matt Jones WR - would love some views from the world wide web please .........

The Incredible Hulk IMDB Link

Directed By:Louis Leterrier

Written By: Zak Penn

Starring: Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, William Hurt

Let me start of by saying that it's awesome how we're in the geek wet-dream age. I would never have thought that we could have Robert Downy Jr. Playing Iron Man and Ed Norton playing The Hulk or that super hero films would have such enormous budgets. I'm going to answer the first two questions people will inevitably ask. Yes, It is better than the Ang Lee version more-so because it's just more entertaining. And yes it's worth watching. It's not as good as Iron Man but it's still a great time. I mean where else can you see a giant green guy break a police car in half and beat the shit out of someone with it?

I think The Incredible Hulk does a great job of reintroducing us to the character/minds of David Banner and Hulk without spending too much time on coddling the audience. They sprinkle in the exposition and let the film start out with a bang. Whenever Hulk shows up it gets pretty nutty. There are all sorts of shout-outs to the comic book and the TV show and the film does a good job of balancing funny and serious. The only thing I wish there was more of was Tim Roth. He did a pretty good job playing the villain but it didn't feel like they really let him loose. The last fight scene was definitely badass with all types of violence and the smashing and the breaking.

I will say I'm a fan of the film but I'm really not a fan of Hulk as a character. I'll be a Batman guy for life for a multitude of reasons I can't get into right now. I mean The Hulk just seems way overpowered. The more he gets angry the bigger he gets and the stronger he gets? And then they introduce Banner being able to control him? I mean that was his only weakness besides being a complete meat head while in Hulk form. He's basically invincible, and we all know how lame invincible is. (See Apocalypse in X-Men or Superman turning back time)

Anyways, I'm going to end on a high and low note. The high note is Michael K. Williams makes a quick cameo in the film because Ed Norton is a big fan of The Wire, as am I. The low note is I'm really nervous about these next two films. I mean Captain America and Thor? Captain America just seems like some corny company man who has no mind of his own and is basically a slave to the US government and Thor, well I can't even look at Thor without laughing. Maybe they'll pull them off, I hope they do. I just sort of think they should have sprinkled them in like, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America. It just feels like we're left with the scraps.

Homey, Sweeney Kovar is now writing for the homies at Oh Word. I am seriously kicking myself for not asking him and some of my other favorite sources of goodness to help write in this blog, especially while I'm overseas.

Sum' bitch. Anyways, here's what he would have potentially shared with you guys.

Straight outta Illadelphia, Knowledge began making beats before he could remember (true story) and is slowly but surely building up a healthy MySpace buzz amongst post-Dilla beat makers. This guy is a problem, but the problem is not too many people know about him.

I can remember when I first met him online and began to get a few beat snippets over AIM a few years ago. I can’t lie; my very first impression was that the beats sounded a little out there. But the more time we spent building, the more I understood where he was coming from and was able to realize this dude was for real.

Knowledge is a workhorse as well. Peep his myspace, he changes beats on there damn near daily, and I know that is only a taste of all the shit he is cooking up at the crib. He has some kind of instrumental EP in the works and he just had a beat on Invincible’s stellar debut LP, so I’m glad to see more people beginning to gravitate towards the kind of music he is creating.

It was a little hazy back then, but now I can see there is a musical common ground that you can hear when you peep cats like Flying Lotus, Ras_G, Samiyam, Hudson Mohawke and others. I’d like to add Knowledge from Philly to that list.

With the Raffle drawing around the corner on Monday a thought came to mind. If bought far apart, could one person possibly win 2 of the million dollar prizes? The odds for it happening are so far and out there it's about as likely as winning the actual mega millions. However, I bought my tickets so far apart that it seems that I may have a chance. A very very slim chance, but a chance nonetheless. Will I win? Odds are against me, I've bought tickets far apart before and won absolutely NOTHING. I've also had people email me as well as comment on this blog saying they played the actual odds of winning and STILL won nothing. That right there just kinda cheese me off, since the odds aren't there and are of course wrong. But its the closest way to determined what actually can be won. I'm hoping for at least 100 bucks after laying down 38 bucks for the tickets. If I win anything more then that, I'll be on cloud 9.

Together we are invincible, let your light shine and when you see the darkness approaching reach out so that the light can enfold you and keep you safe.

To commemorate the release of Invincible's lifetime-in-the-making debut album, ShapeShifters (in stores TODAY!!), we dedicated this month's entire podcast episode to the latest & greatest of Invincible's collaborations & compilation tracks - plus as always, some B47 exclusives.

1. Invincible - 1996 WJLB FM98 Freestyle
I was 15 on this, which is why it sounds like I'm on helium. I didn't know how to count bars yet so if you listen close you can hear them trying to cut me off. but i just kept going. LOL!

2. Invincible - Pick Your Poison (prod. Waajeed) (Fat City/Bling47)
This was on Waajeed's The War LP, and he originally made the beat for Tiombe, but I fell in love with how off-and-on beat it sounds, almost like a staggering drunk. On the surface this is about Hip-Hop addicts but if you listen close the meanings of the lyrics are as layered as the beat itself.

3. Dabyre feat. Invincible & Finale - Viewer Discretion (Ghostly Intl.)
Dabrye once told me he makes beats on some MSDOS program with the green and black screen, which is why his beats sound like UFOs. For the subject matter and sample in the middle I dug up one of my favorite flicks of all time, Born In Flames, to inspire me and Finale.

4. Invincible feat. Helixx - Perfectionists (prod. Supa Dave West) (Rawkus)
Originally slated to be my first single on Rawkus back in '99, another version of this later appeared on Lyricist Lounge's Underground Airplay mixpilation. The incredibly talented Supa Dave West produced this and is singing on the hook as well. This is still an ANOMOLIES anthem to this day.

5. Athletic Mic League feat. Invincible - Got ‘Em Sayin (Turn It Up) (prod. Haircut & Forekast) (Lab Technicians)
The craziest story about this song has to do with AML pressing the vinyl single up in Eastern Europe somewhere where they found a really cheap deal.
6. NowOn feat. Invincible, Illite & Vaughan T - だれか (Who) (prod. The Lab Techs) (A•Side Worldwide)
I left home when I was 15 and crashed on Mikey from Now On's couch that whole summer. We would do nothing but get twisted and cipher all day everyday. This was our first official collaboration since so it meant a lot to me.

7. PPP feat. Invincible - Detroit Winter (prod. Waajeed, co-prod. Saadiq) (Ubiquity)
I originally wrote this to a really dark and depressing beat that Waajeed and Georgia Anne Muldrow co-produced. Randomly, Waajeed called me one day and put the phone up to the speaker with this industrial march sounding track that he had flipped it to and as they say "the rest is history!" The line from the hook was inspired by the same phrase written on a shirt my homegirl Bri from Detroit Summer found at Value Village

8. Finale & Spier1200 feat. Invincible, Wordsworth & Jazz - The Ring (Rawkus 50/Soul Step)
From the Develop album just released last year, we wrote this several years ago. Soon as we heard that ringtone in the background of the track we knew it had to be the "love/hate relationship with phones" anthem.

9. Finale & Spier1200 feat. Invincible & Elzhi - Eye Of the Beholder (Rawkus 50/Soul Step)
This joint is also from the Develop album. Finale asked us to write a poetic beautiful verse about all the ugly situations around us. The vibes in the beat really set the tone.

10. Lacks (OKA TaRaach) & Invincible - Real To Reel (prod. Waajeed) (Bling47) *****VINTAGE EXCLUSIVE!****

The first time I saw Invincible was at UCLA's first Hip Hop for Palestine concert, two years ago. She is the kind of MC that brings me back to why I like hip hop, writing about important issues and shunning gimmicks to make her music. On the strength of her performance, I bought the "Free the P" album, and learned to love Suheir Hammad, Ragtop, and the rest of the Arab Hip Hop community producing quality hip hop.

Invincible often works with Wajeed from Bling47, and is now a part of the ANOMALIES, a NY based hip hop outfit. Bling47 put out a special podcast for the release of her new album, which you can find here. Invincible spurned numerous record deals in favor of keeping her brash style and creative control, and it has paid off with her first full-length release, "ShapeShifters." She was recently featured on The Smoking Section, and had a 2 part docu-music-video about the crumbling of Detroit featured on Current.tv (Part 1, Part 2).

Cop the single "Sledgehammer" here, preview "People not Places," and get on ITunes to buy the whole record, "Shapeshifters" asap. She's a unique MC and represents the branch part of hip hop that keeps this music legitimate. Keep up with Invincible through her website, Emergence.

SPOILERS!!!
It’s finally here! If you are any kind of a Robert Kirkman fan, you’ll know that

SPOILERS!!!

It’s finally here! If you are any kind of a Robert Kirkman fan, you’ll know that he isn’t the most punctual guy around. The oversized five dollar Invincible #50 is finally at your local store.

First, I’ll just comment briefly on the price. I know for me, just like a lot of you, that five bucks is a bit much. What do you get for that? We get 24 pages of the regular series, as well as two 12 page back up stories. You’re getting the length of two issues for a dollar less than you would normally pay. That is good, I’m just sad that we didn’t get 48 pages of the regular story.

Well, I believe it’s been about three months since the last issue came out, but if you’ll recall, Invincible is pissed at his long time boss, Cecil Stedman. The issue opens with Invincible in the white room where he can’t see anything but Cecil and apparently five feet in front of him. Invincible is pissed that Cecil is working with bad guys. We get some nice dialogue between the two characters that has seriousness not often seen in Invincible. Invincible is kicking the crap out of all the zombie dudes and it seems like Mark is going to win.

The white lights cut out mid-fight to reveal that Invincible has an entire army left to fight. Cecil gives Mark an out, but Invincible stands his moral ground and refuses. Cecil reaches in his pocket and then Invincible screams in agony. It seems that after the fight with his dad like 40 issues ago, Cecil not only implanted a communicator in Mark’s ear, but also a device to attack his equilibrium. It is always cool when something is brought up about an event taking place many years ago. It usually shows incredible planning by the writer, like what Ed Brubaker is doing in Captain America. So I was impressed by that.

So it seems that this was Invincible’s weakness. Mark wonders what the devices range is and then tries to run. He doesn’t make it. He tries again after stating that breaking out of the pentagon slowed him down before. We then get a two page splash of Mark flying while Cecil is teleporting from place to place unable to catch Invincible.

He finally gets hit right after he busts into the Guardians of the Globe headquarters. Mark explains his situation and Cecil assures them that Mark is crazy and is the bad guy. They finally believe Mark and try to fight off Cecil and the Reanimen. Rex Splode blows up the device that is hurting Mark which of course makes the pulse constant. The Reanimen begin killing Invincible which finally makes Cecil regretful. Mark toughs it out and gets nice and violent after Robot blocks the transmission that is hurting Invincible. Cecil finally says enough is enough and that Invincible is fired and that he doesn’t care what the others do. Before Cecil ports away Mark slams Cecil into the wall, grabs his throat and says that if Cecil ever screws with him again he’ll kill him. Go Invincible!

When Mark gets home, his brother, his mother, and Eve are there. He explains what just happened, Eve and Mark go outside. Will they finally get together and kiss after 50 damn issues?! YES!!! That is the conclusion to the issue and then we get two stories, the secret origin of Cecil Stedman, and some Science Dog.

So that’s it. I think we got what you want out of an issue 50. The world kind of flips upside down, there is a huge fight all issue with some nice dialogue throughout, and finally Mark and Eve get together. All these things made me happy and ready for the next issue. The Cecil story was cool and the Science Dog was kind of fun, but definitely the worst part of the issue. This is kind of the end of part one of Invincible, which is why on the fifty first issue, the one is highlighted, Invincible has a new costume, and his brother is his sidekick. This was a great issue.

4 out of 4 stars

Detroit’s Invincible & Finale drop part 1 of their docu-music-video from Invincible’s new album, Shapeshifters, over a sweet House Shoes canvas. This is some really compelling shit right here. Speaking on the gentrification that is going on in the D. Featuring interviews with community activists about displacement and predatory planning versus a sustainable ulterior. Be sure to cop Invincible’s LP as it’s quite dope (shouts to Jon for the advance!). Part 2 coming soon.
