Instant messenger založený na Mozille a Pidginu, který má do budoucna jistě dosti potenciálu. V tuto chvíli se nachází v rané fázi vývoje a neskýtá tudíž příliš mnoho možností. V tomto především opravném vydání se tvůrci zaměřili dále na:

Tato vývojová verze by oproti stabilní neměla přijít do standardního provozu, protože může obsahovat závažné chyby a nedodělky.

I caught this article a few days ago on ‘5 things you’ll love about Firefox 3’ right after reading a few others about new stuff being built on the Mozilla platform Instantbird, Spicebird and the ‘elder’ of the group, Songbird.

So okay, first impression, what’s up with the bird names? Sure, Mozilla... the bird theme Firebird (before having to change to fire-something-else), Thunderbird, Sunbird - I get it, there was a bird theme. But really, does everything have to be x-bird, how about an iBird or and eBird? Really, Mozilla had to scrap the Firebird name and opted for Firefox. It also has the SeaMonkey browser suite. Songbird I like, since it’s music and songbird actually means something. But really, Instantbird? and Spicebird? Since these are alpha stage products, I think it’s a perfect time to re-brand, well rename. How about a different organism? Skip fox and monkey... think multifunctional messenger/communications center... maybe Websquid or anything else that doesn’t end in bird.

Besides the name though, it looks like a good product, although I’m not really sure what the business model is. Mozilla itself seems to have hit the jackpot by striking a deal to incorporate Google search as the default search engine in their browsers and set the default home page as a Mozilla skinned Google search page. That’s easy and relatively innocuous. So what are these guys going to do, strike a deal to steer users towards Gmail through integration. I guess I got ahead of myself... Spicebird is a Mozilla answer to Outlook (watch out, I had to surf as the GoogleBot to bypass the MS cookie nazis though). besides the demo on the main page, there’s a bit but not much) more on the Mozilla Labs blog. Spicebird is kind of like Mozilla Turducken (Holy epiphany - that’s what they should call it!!!), Thunderbird email stuffed with Sunbird calendar and scheduling, stuffed with Pidgin (okay, stick strictly to the theme even... Instantbird) instant messaging. So, wait... Mozilla essentially already has all these products and it couldn’t come up with a unified product on it’s own? How puzzling. To be fair, they kind of have tried a little with Lightning, which adds a Sunbird calendaring feature to Thunderbird as an extension.

I don’t mean to ~dis~ Mozilla at all, but I worry for Thunderbird a little bit as Sunbird never really seemed to fly and while I like and use Thunderbird on my non-mac machines... it’s ripe for the picking.

Oh, and Instantbird? It’s Pidgin (formerly Gaim) re-branded as far as I can tell... Pidgin accepts plug-ins so extensions aren’t going to be revolutionary as far as I can tell. They’re talking about enabling audio and video, but the libpurple people in general are working on this, both for Pidgin and Adium, both of which I prefer to use. Supposedly, Instantbird is pretty much the same as the others but with an XUL based User Interface.

Songbird is going to be a huge product though, assuming it becomes as reliable as Firefox some day and isn’t crippled by management. And by that, I mean that as long as it accepts extensions that allow whatever the mind and code can create it will move. I’ll get into that more specifically in another post about the music industry and digital audio products (both of the software and hardware varieties) in another post soon (hopefully), but that’s really the power of Mozilla, a focus on the framework and not on control of the product in the users’ hands.

It’s all about extensibility - It’s all about extensions! Just check out theMozilla Labs to see what new stuff they are adding to Firefox and Mozilla in general, largely through extension development. i don’t see Microsoft building that much flexibility into IE (or whatever they name it next) and I don’t think they have a culture surrounding their products that could even if they had the inclination.

But really, getting back to Firefox 3 and those 5 things I’ll ‘love’... in reverse order, according to computer world, they are better memory usage, easier bookmarking, a better bookmark organizer, an enhanced address bar, and easier downloads, which really means a more feature-rich download manager window. You can’t go wrong with better memory usage. The easy bookmarking they seem to have put in place looks a lot like what Flock has been using since day one, right down to the star-designed button. I can only dream of the day when I’m given more power over my bookmarks, so I dream of a Firefox 3 final release I guess. I’m not so sure about the enhanced address bar... I always am skeptical of those auto-complete functions for the address bar, popping up the URL of every place you’ve ever been - in front of someone else as they borrow your computer, surfing h... o... t... (’honey, what are all these sites? I was going to hotmail and I found...) but if that’s not a problem then it looks pretty nice, from my trial of the Firefox 3 beta, it was somewhat useful. the easier downloads seems to include a download manager that has more info and options as well as tracking/download resumption features. I looked at the screenshot and immediately went off to mock-up the feature I think they should add to it...

Tabs! so you can sort/show just a certain file type. Reduce clutter - organize - improve productivity equals/really means not so annoying.

Плюсы:

• Кроссплатформенность (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux), что не может не радовать. Намного удобнее использовать один и тот же софт как в Windows так и в Linux. Главное чтобы качественный продукт был (:
• Поддержка плагинов Ну тут уже конечно смотря как посмотреть. Как в той же FireFox. Одни кричат что это очень расширяет возможности по настройке браузера, другие что от этого он только тормознутее становится. Хотя поддержка плагинов есть и в миранде. Выигрывает уже только из-за кроссплатформенности.
• Free & Open (:

Минусы:

• Отсутствуэт настройки proxy Да и собственно как таковых настроек нету вообще (:
• Убогость интерфейса Тут речь о том что он как и настройки ещё тоже отсутствует. Я за простоту интерфейса. Чтобы ничего лишнего. Но тут просто пусто (:
• Отображение только тех юзеров которые сейчас в сети Тех кто оффлайн вообще не видно. Ну и ники не отображает (пробовалось на ICQ), только UINы.
• Плагины на сайте не были замечены Хотя пишут подождать. Да и для данной версии не было бы смысла их качать. А может разработчики предложат скачать плагины добавляющие кнопочек полезных в клиент? А ещё было бы неплохо плагин добавляющий настройки клиента. И главное поддержку прокси. Собери себя сам в общем.

Ну а на самом деле программа ещё очень сырая. Собственно версия то всего лишь 0.1. Так что судить рано. У Mozilla уже была попытка создать некий JabberZilla. Закончилось неудачей. Будем всё таки надеяться что с Instantbird не будет то же самое.

Derzeit ist erst in der Version 0.1 verfügbar. Mit kommenden Erweiterungen wird es sicher interessant. Für Entwickler gibt es eine extra Webseite.

Questo fino a pochissimo tempo fa perchè, oggi, dalla simbiosi del motore libpurple per la comunicazione e del rendering gecko è nato Instantbird.

Libpurple è il motore sul quale si basa l'ormai famosissimo client messenger Pidgin.

L'uso di tale libreria permette di utilizzare una gran varietà di protocolli diversi e di comunicare con le comunità più disparate.

Dal papà Gecko invece ha ereditato il motore di rendering e dal firefox la gestione dei temi e la modularità.

Nel home page del progetto si legge:

"Instantbird, the powerful instant messenger based on Mozilla technologies and Pidgin!"

Per ora, di powerful ha solo questa scritta.

E' ancora in fase embrionale e tante ancora devono essere le features da implementare.

Stavolta il protagonista è Instantbird, programma di messaggistica istantanea basato su Gecko, XUL e librerie Pidgin (ex-Gaim).

Cos'è Instantbird?

Chiamatelo "imitazione", chiamatelo novità, chiamatelo doppione. Instantbird altro non è che un client che replica le funzioni basilari di Pidgin e permette di connettersi ai vari servizi di IM attraverso un'interfaccia che sfrutta il motore rendering di Firefox (Gecko), la programmazione XUL per gli addon (estensioni e temi, guarda caso :) ) e le librerie libpurple prese da Pidgin (connessione simultanea tra programma e server dei servizi).

Queste le mie impressioni a caldo:

• Il pacchetto occupa circa 30 MB una volta scompattato, grosso modo quanto Pidgin (se si includono le librerie GTK si parla di pochi KB di differenza).
• I.B. non può essere utilizzato dietro proxy.
• I.B. non fa nulla più di Pidgin piuttosto che Trillian o altri software simili.
• I.B. è appena nato, è quindi bene seguirne gli sviluppi e capire fino a dove un Gecko riadattato a Instant Messenger può spingersi.

In ogni caso Instantbird non ha nulla a che fare con Mozilla Foundation e non è stato sviluppato da nessun membro facente parte del loro staff. Si tratta di una idea di due ragazzi che vengono citati anche nel footer del sito ufficiale: "© 2007 - Florian Quèze and Quentin Castier":

Perché pappagalli?

Molti blog e siti "informatici" italiani tendono a copiare tra di loro le notizie. E' una pratica molto diffusa che già non poche volte ha portato a vere e proprie gaffe evitabili con un attimo in più di attenzione.

Il caso di Instantbird non fa eccezione. Tutto è partito da una notizia su un blog spagnolo dove nel titolo viene specificato "Intantbird, el mensajero instantáneo basado en Mozilla":

Benedetti figlioli. Cosa mai vi costerà spendere qualche minuto in più ed evitare di copiare le notizie di sana pianta? Se proprio volete farlo perché "fa figo pubblicare qualcosa in casa propria", controllate almeno che le fonti siano attendibili!

Instantbird, como ha sido bautizado el proyecto, está basado en otros dos: XULRunner y el archireconocido Pidgin. De momento puede conectarse a los más usados sistemas de mensajería.

Hay versiones para Windows, Mac y, como no, Linux y poco a poco se le irán añadiendo más funcionalidades si hacemos caso al roadmap del proyecto.
