Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt’s character) states…”The things you own end up owning you. Right. We are consumers. We’re the bi-products of a lifestyle obsession”  We do not NEED all the things we think we need, and NEWSFLASH! when we get the things we think we need…they probably aren’t making us any happier.

7. Accept things outside of your control

“I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say let… lets evolve, let the chips fall where they may.”  We do not have to do/have everything.  Accept your life.  Be proud of it.

If you haven't seen the movie. Do it right away, I say.

Next up, Microsoft granted Page Up Page Down patent. Essentially, what MS is saying is that it 'invented' the technology that allows you to skip through pages in a document one at a time. Thank you Bill Gates uncle, without you the world would have been such a sad place.

When MS is here, can Apple be far behind? Here's Apple's History of Innovations. Checkout the iPod on slide 8. Looks so ancient as compared to the one available today. To say that it was invented in 2004, just four years back. Had, god forbid, Microsoft invented it, I dare say it'd have looked the same for the next 4 years as well.

Dudes at the Wall Street Journal like the Internet Explorer 8 because:

Microsoft has added “accelerators” that facilitate common tasks like emailing a Web site, mapping an address, or looking up a word. Just highlight text on a Web page and a accelerator displays the map or definition in the same window....

There’s also a nice feature that makes tabs that are related to one another the same color and a button that shows miniature versions of all open tabs on one screen.

They claim to have been using Firefox all the time. It's a pity no one told them about this site.

Em meados de julho do ano passado, lancei um site chamado "Professor Boiada". Trata-se de um sistema que permite aos alunos de minha universidade(UFSC) uma pesquisa aprofundada no histórico de desempenho obtido pelos alunos em turmas de determinados professores. Mais detalhes podem ser obtidos no próprio site.

Without the wonderful world wide web, I felt antsy. I wanted to write, with music from the web since I don't actually have it, and read another story. I wanted to read an author's profile, check my email, Facebook, and the university site. Who knows what could have been updated in the last twenty hours!

Oh gosh. I sound so odd. Since when did I get get so dependent on the Internet for so many of my needs? Communication, networking, news, fiction—it has it all and more. 'Course, it also seems to update itself every five seconds. But do I need to have it every moment of my life?

Of course not. But it sure doesn't hurt. However, will it hurt my wallet? Traveling, I've been subjected to different prices for slow, frustrating “wireless” Internet. The most expensive I've seen in the past 60 days was 20-ish dollars for 60 minutes. The cheapest, and faster, was $4.95 for 24 hours. (I definitely liked the latter offer.)  Regardless of the prices, however I (or someone very close and beloved) pays the price. Either I or someone else needs to check his or her email or “just-that-one-thing.”

Would you pay for Internet while you were on vacation? What prices have you seen? Would you pay the price to continue a blogging schedule?  Would you blog on vacation?  I haven't been blogging on the schedule I've set myself, and I am sorry about that.  When I'm settled, which should happen within a week or so, I hope to be back on track.

"For the first time, foreign media will be able to report freely and publish their work freely in China. There will be no censorship on the Internet," Mr. Rogge told Agence France-Presse just two weeks ago.

That was two weeks ago. A lot can change in commie land in that period. For a regime that has thrived on misinformation, this was obviously going to be a little too difficult to implement. And as one would expect, the commie philosophy has prevailed. Look what actually is happening:

Since the Olympic Village press center opened Friday, reporters have been unable to access scores of Web pages - among them those that discuss Tibetan issues, Taiwanese independence, the violent crackdown on the protests in Tiananmen Square and the Web sites of Amnesty International, the BBC's Chinese-language news, Radio Free Asia and several Hong Kong newspapers known for their freewheeling political discourse.

On 21 July at a news conference held at the presidential palace to mark the 100th day of the new president's term in office, two bloggers were invited to attend alongside 38 journalists. Allowed to ask one question in each, the bloggers were effectively considered as the equals of journalists. In fact, considering that some pro-opposition media weren't invited, those bloggers might even be considered as ‘even more equal' given that the highest circulation daily in Armenia has a print-run of around 10,000 copies. The precedent was surely set for taking blogs as a medium seriously.

Indeed, it has to be said that such signs were already there given that Serzh Sargsyan had a blog established on his behalf even before he was sworn in as the new president in April. The blog collected several hundred questions from readers on the shaky political situation after the disputed presidential elections held in February and the violent clashes between radical opposition supporters and the police in Yerevan on 1 March. Initiated by Akunamatata_Ser [RU], who remembered that Sargsyan had promised to answer questions from bloggers again on the 100th day of his presidency, around 50 questions were collected.

The blogger reports on the historic occasion.

It turned out that the people on the helms of government actually look after us and even follow us. Today akunamatata_ser and pigh were invited to the presidential palace!!!!!! It turned out the fact that we remember and don't forget the promises to bloggers hasn't slipped the eye of the ‘big brother'

In an excited entry, RealArmenia welcomes the participation of Armenian bloggers in the press conference, noting that “Armenia so far becomes one of the rare country where the bloggers are going to be equal to journalists” and congratulates Sergey Chamanyan (akunamatata_ser) and Tigran Kocharyan (pigh) as a result.

However, not all bloggers welcomed the news and there was also much criticism in the Armenian blogosphere. Pro-opposition blogger Nazarian, for example, remarked that “The invited were palace bloggers serving the needs of the regime. The questions they asked obviously were pro-regime..” Unzipped went further, wondering if “the real intention behind recent close engagements of presidential staff with few pro-government bloggers is to discredit blogs/blogging in the eyes of population, in general, from the beginning, without even allowing their further development.”

Tumanyan [RU] takes a more satirical approach and looks forward 70 years with a short story in the best traditions of Orwell's 1984.

Veteran journalist Mark Grigorian [RU] instead initiated a more theoretical discussion on the acceptability of inviting bloggers, i.e. non-professional journalists to a press-conference even if his argument presupposes that journalists in the country maintain a certain degree of professionalism. Grigorian speculates that although the invited bloggers have around the same numbers of readers as some newspapers, they should not be considered as representatives of the mass media.

The blog is not updated regularly (one day a blog might have several entries, on another days - none at all), the blogger might not necissarily be the author of information published on the blog, and the blog might not always contain inormation — we know that often blog entries are just photos or a link to a music video on YouTube, etc.

Hence blogging requires other skills, then those necessary for working in Mass Media. And that was perfectly illustrated on Armenian president's press conference.

Former journalist and media professional Ogostos [RU] was also not impressed.

There is no logic in the appearance of bloggers in a presidential press-conference […]. If presidential spin-doctors consider bloggers full-fledged players in the information field and want to demonstrate their “transparency” by inviting bloggers, they should be aware, that this “transparency” is fully blown-up by the absence of pro-opposition journalists - who are undoubtedly NO LESS FULL-FLEDGED PLAYERS. If the presidential spin-doctors view bloggers as civil-society, they should also invite other members of civil society and call it public consultations or something else, instead of inviting a press-conference.

In response to the wave of criticism, one of those bloggers invited to the press conference — Pigh [RU] — makes some valid points in his defense, saying that he doesn't respect most journalists because of their “unscrupulousness, non-professionalism and venal practices.” Instead, he paints the picture of experienced bloggers being those with no editors slowing down or even preventing certain information from being published.

The blogger says that his motivation to attend the press-conference was to promote blogging and blogosphere, and believes that this objective was achieved. “Take it easy, people,” he tells his critics, summarizing the achievements of the event.

Dear bloggers. It is so cool that we, positionists and oppositionsists, have stepped on the feet of journalists with our blogs. And even with our professionalism. I personally am flattered to see, that the number of my blog's pageviews surpasses 90 percent of printruns of Armenian newspapers. It is great to be able to enter the blog, see a post and be able to express your agreement disagreement (instead of running to the courts and demanding refutation in the newspapers). […] Virtual reality is slowly, but surely stepping on the feet of printed press. Progress, has slowly but surely penetrated here as well.

I don't mind gmail bots sneaking into my mails and displaying relevant ads, but I do mind ads such as this one. I mean, it's been a tiring day at the workplace, then the long ride back home...and what do I end up with at the end of the day? Now that's what I call ad'non'sense. What a shame. I curse the person who made the copy for this text ad and I, from the bottom of my guts, detest the bot that linked this ad to some godforsaken text in my mail. Hope sanity prevails.

La solución es bien sencilla, pero es un poco excluyente para todos los usuarios de Opera etc... Yo personalmente lo he conseguido en Firefox y en IceWeasel, pero no en IceApe por lo que supongo que no irá en Opera, Epiphany etc...

Lo unico que debeis hacer es ira esta web de Addons de Firefox (es oficial de Mozilla) y se os descargará automaticamente el addon Flashblock que hace lo siguiente: bloquea todo elemento flash de toda web que visites, pero muestra un recuadro en el lugar donde deberia estar el anuncio y en el recuadro hay un botón de "Play". Sólo pulsando ese boton se inicará esa animación flash (pero sólo esa, no las demas de la web).

la primera prueba que he realizado ha sido en YouTube, donde he activado unicamente el video y la publicidad no me ha dado más la vara.

Todo parece indicar que va a ser un sábado atípico. Salvo por la colaboración semanal en Efe Eme. Lo cual implica al menos 2 posts para hoy (éste y la crónica de Socioapatía del tercer partido de las semis) Que no vienen mal para un día lluvioso (¡bienvenida lluvia!) Y a lo mejor al final del día cae alguno más (que se me acumulan)

Leer a Neil Young diciendo "Putting on a headphone and listening to MP3 is like hell" me puso inmediatamente en alerta. Es de los míos. O más bien, soy de los suyos (como comprobareis si continuáis leyendo) Podríamos traducirlo como “ponerse los cascos para escuchar mp3 es infernal”. Y me cambió la orientación del artículo semanal. Estaba barajando otras dos posibilidades y dándole vueltas al asunto con Juan Puchades, el capo de Efe Eme. Y en eso llegó Young y mandó parar.

Ya sabéis que la diferencia está en los hipervínculos (sólo en El Mundano) Y el video de la presentación de Neil Young en la JavaOne de Sun está enlazado en ambos artículos. Sólo que para el post he incluido los youtube (los de Sun lo han subido en dos partes) La primera parte encabeza esta entrada. Y la segunda está al final.

Neil Young y las Nuevas Tecnologías

Cuando Bob Dylan se mostró contrario a las grabaciones digitales y reivindicaba (algunos) sistemas analógicos, entendí perfectamente lo que quería decir. Pero como no explicó a dónde quería llegar, sus palabras fueron mal interpretadas. Está claro que en su exposición había mucho de razón y de añoranza. A partes iguales.

Dylan se unía así a un coro de aficionados y profesionales que sostienen (o sostenemos, en según que casos) que los amplificadores de válvula son mejores que los actuales, que la calidad de reproducción de los mp3 es mala, que los avances tecnológicos forman parte de la historia de la música popular y no son el enemigo a batir, que el vinilo debería permanecer (entre otras cosas por sus “deep grooves”, como recuerda Neil Young) o simplemente muestran su preferencia por las grabaciones analógicas sobre las digitales. Y en estos asuntos –como en tantos otros- Young ha sido un pionero. Con aciertos y errores, como es lógico.

Siempre se mostró reticente con los CDs. Fue el primero al que se lo escuché. En 1982. Fue en su rancho californiano de Broken Arrow en La Honda. Una localidad clave en los albores del sicodelismo: Ken Kesey escribió parte de su Alguien voló sobre el nido de cucos en las paredes del baño de su casa de La Honda. Sus aventuras, y las de sus The Merry Pranksters, fueron recogidas por Tom Wolfe en The Electric kool-aid acid test publicado en España como Gaseosa de ácido eléctrico o ponche de ácido lisérgico. Entre los Pranksters estaban “el chofer” Neal Cassidy –del Magic Bus de 1964 y anteriormente del On the road de Kerouac– y también Carolyn Adams, la Mountain Girl, esposa del Grateful Dead Jerry García y madre de Sunshine, el hijo que tuvo con Kesey.

Había organizado unas entrevistas con periodistas europeos, australianos y japoneses para hablar de su álbum Trans. Por aquel entonces llevaba el Marketing Internacional de Geffen para CBS Records International desde Black Rock, en Nueva York. Y Trans era un disco difícil que necesitaba de muchas explicaciones. Un experimento con la “electrónica” disponible entonces. Se apartaba del camino al que nos tenía acostumbrados. Los sintetizadores, incluyendo los vocoders, formaban parte de una búsqueda para desarrollar una tecnología que le permitiese comunicarse con su hijo Ben, que no podía hablar a causa de una parálisis cerebral (a lo que habría que añadir unos terribles dolores crónicos de espalda que según su propia confesión le impedían tocar la guitarra, lo que ayudó a crear ese estilo tan propio).

De ese día, aparte de los problemas de salud, me impresionó lo ordenado que tenía toda su obra (dentro del ambiente bohemio que se percibía). Todo perfectamente organizado y etiquetado en esos típicos archivadores de oficina. Ya entonces, 1982, le rondaba la idea de reagrupar todos sus archivos, pero no le convencían los medios disponibles de la época. De hecho no le han convencido hasta ahora.

El pasado 6 de mayo ¡por fin! presentó lo que anhelaba desde hace tanto tiempo: su memoria histórica en diez discos, repartidos en varios volúmenes. El anuncio fue en una rueda de prensa en San Francisco, con motivo del JavaOne (Sun Microsystems). Y su sueño se puede realizar ahora gracias a la combinación de distintos elementos: Java, Internet, Blu-Ray y la PS3.

En resumidas cuentas el lenguaje Java le permite actualizar por Internet, además de proporcionarle la deseada confección y navegabilidad de los menús. Blu-Ray le amplia posibilidades de almacenamiento (“storage is the only limit”, dice) y le ofrece la mejor calidad de reproducción.

Descarta los DVDs como formato, porque no se puede escuchar música a la vez que se visionan vídeos de alta resolución. 

A través de Internet (con Blu-Ray) se pueden actualizar los contenidos. Que es el punto que me parece más interesante: no sólo hace públicos sus archivos, sino que además si se encuentran (o encuentras) aportaciones, se pueden (las puedes) incluir. Como parafernalia, imágenes, grabaciones, etc. Con lo cual está creando algo “vivo” y transformable. No encuentro precedentes.

¿Y lo de la PS3? Blu-Ray viene de serie con la PS3 y todo el mundo la tiene o conoce a alguien que la tiene. Una de sus grandes ventajas –aparte de las obvias- es precisamente su accesibilidad.

Para más información sobre este tema os recomiendo ver el siguiente video de ZDNet pinchando aquí. Es muy interesante y refleja la exposición y presentación que efectúa Neil Young. Ahí podréis ver los archivadores que mencionaba antes. Pero, por favor, llegad hasta el final, donde de forma muy gráfica demuestran la capacidad de almacenamiento y la extensión “física” del proyecto (despliegan un rollo de papel que llega a cubrir prácticamente el escenario de lado a lado).

Y si lo pensamos bien, en realidad lo que Neil Young está proclamando es que ni CDs, ni DVDs: lo que realmente recomienda es ¡la Playstation 3! Por su calidad y sus avances tecnológicos.

Sinceramente nunca pensé que el (posible) futuro del negocio de la música pudiese pasar por consolas de videojuegos o por los propios juegos, como ya está sucediendo  (desde Guitar Hero a Grand Theft Auto 4 –que incluye 200 canciones- pasando por el Singstar, etc.)

Y a Neil Young siempre “le he echado en cuenta”…

Maybe Wordpress sends the new page directly to Google for spidering and indexing -- in any case, it's nice.

Vamos a esta página: Zattoo - TV to Go y nos registramos en el botón Sign Up de arriba.

Completamos los campos. Le damos a Download . En la siguente página nos saldrán todos los sistemas operativos para los que hay Zattoo. Linux es el de más abajo. Clikad.

Ahora sólo debemos descargar el reproductor en formato .deb o .rpm dependiendo de nuestra distro.

Una vez descargado, ejecutamos el instalador. Instalamos el paquete y listo.

Ahora estará en Aplicaciones -> Sonido y vídeo -> Zattoo Player .

Cada vez que lo ejecutemos nos pedira el correo y la clave, la introducimos y ya está.

Tambien podemos marcar la opción de que no nos lo pregunte nunca más, por comodidad.

Así e sel reproductor:

Seleccionamos el canal y lo cargará.

Este reproductor depende de la banda de internet, por lo que aveces puede frenarse la emisión durante un instante.

Pues he aquí a solución, y son incluso más bonitos que en Windows o MacOS. La instalación es sencilla. Aquí os la dejo:

Lo primero es descaragr este archivo tar.bz2

Una vez descargado lo descomprimimo (Botón derecho->Extraer aqui)

Luego nos aparecerá un carpeta que guardaremos en algun lugar y en la terminal nos dirigimos a él con el comando cd . ->

Por ejemplo, si está en el escritorio:

Una vez situados con la terminal, escribimos en la misma:

Y nos dirá:

Ahora reiniciamos Firefox, si lo teniamos abierto, y ya estará todo más bonito.

Para desisntalarlo (es posible que querais hacerlo si usais aluna vez un tema visual con fondo negro) repetid la misma operacion, pero en vez de ./install -i escribid:
