Producer's lies.

Until hearing this album, I was on the 'NOT' side of the impressed scale for Death Cab for Cutie, I thought that they were bland and pointless and stupid. There are songs on this album, that still fall into this category. After an interesting start to the album, I do not want to turn it off and am being sucked into this album, like a pea in a black hole, they decide to turn the suction to reverse with the rest of the album. At first I was hopeful, and thought that I was going to get some interesting variation on the standard indie by numbers format, especially when reading that the producer of the album say " "thus far it's pretty weird and pretty spectacular; lots of blood. It's creepy and heavy..." I was really expectant, but all I am now is thoroughly disappointed and think that producer, Chris Walla is a liar.

There are some interesting points to the album, 'I Will Possess Your Heart' and 'Grapevine Fires' are different and refreshing in a dessert of never-ending blandness. I must admit, this is better than a lot of the indie that is around at the moment.

The Delicious, 4 guys from Indiana, bring us a song named after a 19th century japanese printmaker. Interesting.
Not too long, not too short "Hokusai" is fun, frantic pop with a hint of Hot Hot Heat.
On a side note, I adore them for adding 'of Montreal' as an influence on their MySpace profile... even though they capitalized that infamously lowercase 'O'...

Esta noche en Selector de Frecuencias nos unimos a la celebración internacional del Día de la Música Independiente. Al punto de las 8pm (hora TJ, 10pm en DF, sábado 5am en Madrid) podrán escuchar nuestra selección de Los INDISpensables aunque, en nuestro caso, más que temas decidimos enlistar a los grupos y solistas indies que son ya emblemáticos de nuestro radio show.

Uhgo, amigo y fan del radio show, nos metió la idea de hacerlo monográfico: clásicos y actuales, en español. Cosa difícil pero creo que finalmente lo logramos. Escuchen el playlist que incluye a Astrud, La Casa Azul, Lagartija Nick, Kiki D´akí y más.

Espinoza's vocals and music bear similarity to fellow travelers such as Elliott Smith and Kevin Tihista's Red Terror, while Murray's songs recall another indie pop band, the late, great Aberdeen. Hymn And Her is an almost pitch perfect mixture of ethereal pop, experimental pop and guitar based indie rock. This latest effort continues an upward trajectory for Earlimart, solidifying a reputation for making some of the best American indie pop music to be heard in recent years. This will surely delight indie pop fans, and is definitely recommended for listeners looking for literate, well crafted music for adults. Standout cuts: "Song For," "Before It Gets Better," "Teeth" and "Hymn And Her."

The first full-length album by Metric was recorded in 2001 but released in 2007, for record label issues.

It's kind a pop music with rock and hip hop influences. The album starts with the good homonymous track and  goes down straight to a black whole of pop clichés with hip hop beats.

Modern Skirts is a quartet out of Athens Georgia composed of Jay Gulley (vocals, guitar), Jojo Glidewell (piano, guitar, vocals), Philip Brantley (guitar, bass, vocals) and John Swint (drums, percussion).  Gulley's vocals and Glidewell's piano are often featured but the band uses a rich instrumental palette and Glidewell takes lead vocals on "City Lights".  Modern Skirts are so masterful at melody, harmony and song construction it's difficult to believe Catalogue of Generous Men is a first album.  The contrapuntal three part harmonies of "Tonight Before You Were Sleeping" are lovely and exquisite.  "September Song" lilts with an easy sway that perfectly captures the soft days of late summer.  "Save Me" is sung with such raw emotion that it can be hard to listen to even when you've heard it a hundred times before.  "My Lost Soprano" is built on a barrelhouse piano that works so well you wish Glidewell would do more of it.  Almost every song on the album sounds fully realized. 

Catalogue of Generous Men was released independently and may be hard to find but it's more than worth the effort.  Mike Mills, the bass player in a somewhat less obscure Athens band called R.E.M., turned on to Modern Skirts and brought them to Europe to open for some of R.E.M.'s shows this summer and they're scheduled to play a set before Duke Spirit this Saturday, June 28, at Glastonbury - what I wouldn't give to be able to fly to the UK for that gig! - so the band's visibility may be on the rise.  They also have a new album scheduled for release late this summer.  If you are a fan of indie pop give Modern Skirts a listen.  Or, if you're like me and don't get it right away, give them time to work their magic because this is a band that has the magic.  We've listened to Catalogue of Generous Men hundreds of times and more and its never gotten old.  It's a brilliant album.

Así que este festivo dúo de Manchester -ciudad que sabe mucho de bailoteo, y si no que se lo pregunten a New Order, Happy Mondays o Chemical Brothers- formado por la descarada cantante y guitarrista Kattie White y el algo bizco batería Jules De Martino, serán los encargados de amenizarnos las noches veraniegos en los garitos más indiecool.

Pues estos chicos -que así de primeras se me parecen desconcertántemente a los presentadores de Sé lo que hicísteis- acaban de editar su primer lp titulado We Started Nothing declarando honéstamente lo que en efecto una piensa cuando lo escucha, que no han inventado nada. Una pequeña colección de obviedades pegadizas y facilonas, pero superbailables -y esa intrascendentalidad en verano, siempre se espera y en el fondo se agradece.

Abre el disco la ya mencionada "Great Dj" himno de parvulario dónde nos enseñan a pronunciar la A y la I -no les llegaba la vocación docente para el resto de las vocales.

El caso es que actualmente en su país la que está pegando es el remix del que fue su primer single publicado el año pasado "That's Not My Name", al que en su momento no se le tanto caso cómo ahora pero que tras el pelotazo de "Great Dj", han aprovechado para relanzar.

Regustines varios, a mi me recuerda mucho a Elastica pero con toques a lo Amy Winehouse. Tan infecciosa como la otra, se hace imposible dejar de bailarla. Bonitos los coros finales que armonizan el estribillo gritón y machacón, dándole un candor muy indie-blondie...

Seguimos bailando con la electro-guitarrera "Fruit Machine" un futurible single o que al menos sonará en mis playlists marchosas de la temporada, y la relajada y retro "Traffic Light" un intento de hacer algo distinto sin gran éxito que básicamente cumple la función de hacernos descansar el oido de tanto gritito meneacaderas.

El último single editado, la publicitaria "Shut up and Let Me Go" tiene un ritmo "cardiaco" no por lo acelerado, sino por lo que recuerda con sus sacudidas a los latidos, motivo sonoro que el siguiente video reproduce visualmente -o bien se trata de un festivo himno feminista adornado con exhibiciones de artes marciales a lo Matrix. Una divertida muestra en el que es su clip mas elaborado hasta la fecha (se nota que el dinero de Apple mejora sus posibilidades)

"Keep Your Head" es otra buena excusa para lanzarse a bailar, mientras que la blondística "Be The One" es la más emotiva del disco con la voz a lo Lolita (de Nabukov se entiende, nada que ver con la familia Flores), los melancólicos arreglos y los ululantes coros. Es "casi" triste y no les queda mal, salvo que no sorprende mucho más que dentro del propio disco.

Un melódico piano introduce "We Walk" llevándonos a la falsa impresión de que se trata de un aburrido tema lentito de esos de relleno, pero al poco arranca, marcado por un piano y guitarrita muy funky y llevándonos a otro tema bailongo aunque White intenta cantar mas y chillar menos.

Pasamos rápidamente "Impacila Capisung" donde lo único remarcable es la ensaladita electrónica de guarnición, porque la pequeña canta que dan ganas de facilitarle la eutanasia. Quizá con un remix esta canción les quede mejor, aunque la canción ya parece en sí una remezcla de esas malas de un tema que ya no era bueno.

Y cerrando el disco, que novedad el tema que le da título, o sea "We Started Nothing", declaración de principios que, como ya he dicho antes, anuncia que el dúo de innovador tiene poco, al imitar a otra gente que a su vez imitaba directamente a otros, pero en aquel caso, imitaba bien. Y en este caso la imitación a otros imitadores es bastante mala.

Baterías machaconas, guitarras provocadoras y ganchitos electrónicos con una voz absolutamente roedora y pueril, que insiste en los estribillos adhesivos hasta la saciedad. Mucha canción mediocre salvada en los arreglos por un buen trabajo de producción. Inevitablemente recuerdan a otros grupos del revival new wave con voz femenina -especialmente a Yeah Yeah Yeahs, y The Long Blondes, o incluso a Vive La Fête- pero alejados de toda tendencia depresiva o apuesta experimental, mamando más del funk y el rock'n'roll más básico, pero revestido de maquinitas sin las cuales no se puede lanzar ningún éxito de pop bailable hoy en día. No han comenzado nada, pero vienen dispuestos a hacernos pasar muy buenos ratos ¿Sobrevivirán al verano o se mantendrán en letargo hasta el siguiente?

The Strokes, Tigercity, Franz Ferdinand, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Dandy Warhols, Vampire Weekend i Bob Geldof na wokalu. Trochę tego dużo jak na jedną płytę, nieprawdaż? Tej recenzji by nie było, gdyby nie dwa powody z najważniejszym na czele - „Rich Girls".

Po pierwsze primo, czyli uzależniający niczym duży zestaw z McDonald's przeciętnego Amerykanina singiel. Nie wiem czy dzielenie się tą wiedzą jest bezpieczne, ale ok, słowo się rzekło. „Rich Girls", o którym tu mowa, to jedna z najlepszych rzeczy, jaka mogła się wydarzyć w 2008 roku. Gdy pierwszy raz usłyszałem ten numer, to... Posłuchałem go po raz drugi, trzeci, czwarty, piąty (...) Kolejny z rzędu. Już sam groove wskazuje na Ciebie palcem i mówi „siadaj i słuchaj", a Ty tak naprawdę lądujesz na kolanach z rozdziawionymi ustami wyrażającymi coś na kształt „wooooow!". Wersy wyśpiewane przez Donalda Cumminga brzmią jak klasyczne: „We'll walk around/Pretending we're all grown up/Hey, rich girls!", bas i gitara pulsują funkiem, a refren, to piękno w czystej postaci. W ogóle te perkusjonalia w drugiej zwrotce, lick po post-chorusie, falsetowe „You got to know", wyluzowana melorecytacja wokalisty w końcówce (George Clinton, hę?) - nie ogarniam! „Rich Girls" ma w sobie tyle miodu, że mógłby obdzielić nim kilka kilometrów kwadratowych pasieki, a jeszcze by się przelewało. Jeśli tego nie chwytasz, to obawiam się, że nie ma już dla Ciebie nadziei.

Po drugie primo, czyli reszta. Cóż, tak jak napisałem we wstępie - właściwie każda piosenka debiutantów z NYC kojarzy się z dokonaniami bardziej doświadczonych kolegów po fachu. Nie oskarżam „Dziewic" (tak przy okazji - zespół tworzy czterech panów) o epigoństwo, raczej o sprawne posługiwanie się techniką kolażu. „The Virgins" i focus, to rzeczy zupełnie przeciwstawne i można by już ciskać gromy pod adresem Jankesów, gdyby nie fakt, że melodie się bronią. Nie ma mowy o żadnej wirtuozerii, odkrywaniu Ameryki, ale kogo to właściwie obchodzi, gdy za oknem żarówa nie daje wytchnienia i rozpoczął się sezon imprezowy? To i macie - „Teen Lovers", „Private Affair", „One Week of Danger", „Murder", wszystkie wymienione powinny idealnie się sprawdzić w klubach, na domówkach czy kontynuując wątek amerykański - na barbecue parties.

Chłopaki z The Virgins świetnie wyczuli moment na wydanie pierwszego longplaya. O The Strokes nikt już prawie nie pamięta, Franzi nagrywają trzeci album, a nowa płyta The Dandy Warhols została odebrana chłodno. Że to niby miałkie i przeznaczone tylko do zabawy? Po to powstali kiedyś The Flaming Lips, zawsze można posłuchać ich. Wy tymczasem sprawdźcie „Rich Girls" i resztę singli, a do długiej listy inspiracji męskich dziewic dodajcie jeszcze The Clash. Na zdjęciach wyglądają jak ich młodsi bracia.

Liela Moss et Luke Ford fondent The Duke Spirit en 2003 avec 3 potes rencontrés en fac. Il sortent un premier album en 2005, "Cuts across the land", bien accueilli par la critique. Groupe  d'indie pop emmené par une chanteuse, on les compare facilement à PJ Harvey ou aux Pixies mais leur musique dépasse et va au delà de ces glorieuses influences. Car bien qu'anglais et donc fins mélodistes, les Duke Spirit ont incorporé à leur pop noisy, une touche américaine mi soul mi stoner rock.

Liela Moss sait mettre du groove dans son chant tout en restant abrasive et les musiciens font la navette entre shoegazing et gros son américain. Ce second album doit beaucoup à la production de Chris Goss, il leste les mélodies des anglais et nous les impriment plus profondément sans pervertir l'âme indie des anglais. Si comme moi vous adorez les groupes de rock avec chanteuse à la voix écorchée, si vous aimez les grosses grattes psychés venues du désert, la pop qui groove, jetez vous sur "Neptune" ou allez le découvrir ici :

Afin de répondre à d'éventuels quolibets amicaux et néanmoins malfaisants,j'assume complétement ce deuxième post en moins d'un mois sur une jolie chanteuse blonde...

British Sea Power jest to kolejna gwiazda, którą wyczarował nam genialny Artur Rojek. To co zrobił w tym roku jest niesamowite. Sprowadzi w jedno miejsce, do Mysłowic śmietankę alternatywnej muzy. W moim odczuciu Off Festival w tym roku przebija nawet Openera w Gdyni. Z resztą przed nami jeszcze parę recenzji zespołów, które wystąpią w małej miejscowości na Śląsku.

BSP, BSP, BSP. Co by o nich napisać. Bardzo Spokojne, Popowe melodie. Dla mnie British Sea Power to angielskie wydanie Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Co oznacza w tym przypadku angielskie? Bardziej popowe, melodyjne. Właśnie melodyjność to główna zaleta tego zespołu, ale nie melodyjność w stylu Coldplay. Im nikt nie zarzuca, że się szmacą przez dodawanie wpadających w ucho riffów. Może dlatego, że oni zawsze tak grali? Na tej płycie jest wiele takich zabiegów, by piosenka od pierwszej sekundy wpadała słuchaczowi w ucho. Różnorakie chórki, klawisze i wspomniane wcześniej melodyjne riffy powodują, że utwory od razu się nam podobają. Muzyka British Sea Power nie potrzebuje czasu by się nam spodobała jak to bywa z niektórymi zespołami. W tym momencie punkt dla Anglików.

Na Do You Like Rock Music? jest wiele indie-popowych nutek, które powinny się spodobać każdemu, nie tylko miłośnikowi gatunku. Także na urodzinach cioci lub wujka British Sea Power jak najbardziej. Całość otwiera się od patetycznego All in It. Utwór wskazuje drogę. Dalej trafimy na Waving Flags. Co powoduje, że wpada w ucho? No te chórki oczywiście, perkusja w stylu Arcade Fire z No Cars Go. Ciekawy jest utwór Down on the Ground. Z początku brzmi to w stylu syfiastych i pozerskich zespołów z Ameryki w których gitarzyści mają różowe gitary. Jednak dalej nabiera to rozmachu i nawet fajnie brzmi. Mocny punkt płyty.

Nazwa tej płyty jest trochę myląca co do zawartości. Ciężko nazwać tą muzykę typowo rockową nawet po paru mocniejszych. Można tytuł płyty interpretować na różne sposoby, na innych serwisach już to zrobili także nie będę w to wnikał. Płyta ta wyszła na początku tego roku a już się pojawiły głosy, że to najlepszy album wydany w 2008. Ja raczej poczekałbym z taką oceną do grudnia, ale na pewno przebija on wydania takich zespołów jak Kooks czy WAS o których wcześniej pisałem.

British Sea Power to powinien być kolejny powód by wybrać się na Offa i posłuchać tej fajnej płytki w wykonaniu na żywo. Moja ocena dla Do You Like Rock Music? to 7\10.

The Republic Tigers are a fantastic indie/dream pop (one review I read called them “Majestic Pop” a term I think fits the band perfectly) group from Kansas City, Missouri. I first found this band while reading through Paste Magazine and listening to the sampler CD that comes with each issue. The Paste sampler CD has introduced me to many wonderful bands like Midlake and Colour Revolt, who have now become favorites of mine. I now add another favorite band from Paste to that list, The Republic Tigers. What caught my attention even more listening to their song was seeing the bands hometown being Kansas City, MO where I grew up before making the trek to California. I was very excited just seeing a band from KC, now it came to finding out if they were any good.

As I began to listen to their song “Buildings and Mountains” (video below) I was immediately hooked. The song begins with some ambient noise and then quickly moves into a catchy acoustic guitar hook, after that the band joins in with a simple but very dreamy harmony, I’m a sucker for dreamy harmonies. I didn’t think the song could get any better, but then the chorus becomes one of the catchiest I’ve heard in ages. After hearing this song I immediately went to listen to the entire CD to see how well it compares to this song and I was not disappointed, each song on their full length was just as good.

So far The Republic Tigers have released a self titled EP and a full length entitled Keep Color, which just released a couple months ago. Here is their video for Buildings and Mountains.
