updated Jul 21

Let's face it, you want an iPhone 3G @ 199. However most of us who's interested in buying one were put off by a number of unknowns, insane service rates (ex. Rogers.ca), rumors flowing around on the internet and in the news. I myself for one puzzled at uncountable mysteries and wondered how I would be able to procure such great product at a fair price.

The Atascadero, Calif.-based Mac and iPod parts shop flew a technician to Auckland, New Zealand, to buy one of the first Apple (AAPL) iPhone 3Gs when they went on sale July 11 at 12:01 a.m. local time.

No sooner had he unpacked it than he immediately set to work taking it apart.

You can follow the somewhat unsettling sequence of events -- dirty fingernails and all -- here.

What Do You Do With A Smashed iPhone Screen? Fix It!

What do you do? There are three options for you
1. You could call Apple and they’ll charge you

What do you do? There are three options for you

1. You could call Apple and they'll charge you $200 or $250 depending on the capacity of your iPhone. They do not cover physical screen damage in their warranty. The screens are the same for both capacities (4 and 8 gigs) but they make money off you that way. But if you're not in the States, you're not going to get it done.

2. You could choose to buy a screen and digitizer for roughly $250 dollars and try to replace it yourself. The process is risky and could permanently damage your iPhone if you're not super careful and use the exact tools mentioned.TechKnowSpace does it for $209 in Canada in 90 minutes. Most of you will think you could just buy a new phone. Don't! A new phone may set you back as little as $450 (US) to $700. It's worth getting the screen replaced. You could choose to replace it yourself by ordering the product at PDA Parts and follow this video to disassemble your phone:

Note that this video only shows you the disassembly not the reassembly.

Alternatively, you could purchase the stuff from iFixIt which also provides other parts for the iPhone.

3. You could go out on a limb and try to replace the screen yourself for about $5, although the price may vary slightly. You may find that tutorial at Ars Technica.

I’ve been working on an iMovie of my trip to Ireland and concluded that my PowerBook (17

I've been working on an iMovie of my trip to Ireland and concluded that my PowerBook (17" 1.33GHz 1GB RAM) is too slow. Interestingly, when I boot from a 7200rpm Firewire drive, my system is much faster. This has led me to covet a 7200rpm laptop drive to replace the anemic 4200rpm 80GB drive that came with the PowerBook. I was debating the value of the upgrade versus voiding my AppleCare warranty, on which I have 10 months left, but decided that I could always swap the disk back if needed for warranty work.

Having decided to take the plunge, I needed to pick a hard drive and learn how to install it. Enter PB FixIt. This site is fantastic. They have walk-throughs for all of the common maintenance and upgrades for all PowerBook and iBook models, including a list of the tools required before getting started. Even better: if you're like me and don't know a Spudger from a T6 Torx Screwdriver, they let you purchase the tools directly from them! It was so convenient, I went ahead and ordered the three tools I'd need for the job. They arrived just two days later.

I poked around a picked out the Hitachi TravelStar 7K100 (which was just reviewed in a notebook drive round-up) as my new hard drive. I also ordered a MacAlly 2.5" external case to house the 80GB drive I'll be taking out of my laptop. When those arrive, I will walk through the procedure and let you know how it all turns out.
