Quick thoughts about technology...

Is the digital age ruining our way of life? What ever happened to talking to neighbors, sending letters, or enjoying others company? Have we become too independent?

More or less this is just 8 am talking, but I wonder if higher gas prices might help to bring more community to the community. Technology has put a television in front of our eyes, and i-pod into our ears, countless chemicals into our mouth and nose, and helped us lose that touch with other humans.

As we detach from society and zone in on our "man made mantra" we lose contact with what is REAL. Maybe if we tried to understand where other people are coming from we wouldn't have war. How out of control is war? I mean really- we are going to kill another person for power?- really?

Empathy could die. If it's all about me, then what should I care about you? Personally it's a lot easier for me to NOT feel bad for someone (i don't know) who has fallen on hard times, than say a relative or close friend. Relationships build a caring, understanding community of people. We don't have to all agree, but shit we should be able to tolerate.

SO hey kids- put down the fucking i-pods and video games, and go ride bikes with some friends, and go meet some new people. Say hello to others, hold some doors, make a little eye contact. Use your imagination for God sake.

Technology can be awesome to save time, connect with old friends, and find deals. Texting has it's pros but having an actual conversation face to face does as well. Interaction takes time and effort. Buying online can save you a buck, but who do you go to when the device breaks and you need to get it fixed?

Today, I respected my rule that 6' waves win out over trading. That hurricane in the gulf is sending a groundswell in our direction, and I just had to be on it. I put stops all over the place, forgot the markets, and surfed all day. The waves were just sooooo good. I haven't seen a decent groundswell in awhile, and it was nice to be all over it. I surfed for at least 6-7 hours, and John joined me for about 3 hours. It was pretty good, and I brought out a longboard, and my i-Pod. I listened to some jazz, and rode some serious waves, with a few of my friends. We surfed until our arms became noodles, then sat in the parking lot of the jetty, talking story. There were minimal crowds, the air temp was 90 and the water was 88 degrees. The water gets hot in the gulf, and there was no cooling refreshment. However, the great waves made the lack of refreshment worth it. Now, I'm chilling, nursing a sunburn that has gotten worse, and am going to soak in the cool tub. I might go out later tonight for a midnite swim. I might take John over to a friend's house, and have a few beers.....I just don't know.

My sister is moving back to her house, telling me her job here is done. I'm gonna miss her.

There is some more art on the horizon.

Análisis del i phone 3g!!!

Desde hace una semana tengo en mis manos un iPhone 3G, he podido jugar con este teléfono por un buen tiempo, por desgracia algunos servicios no están disponibles pues se liberan el día de mañana que sale a la venta, así que tendremos más cosas de qué hablar. Por lo pronto, checa este review de uno de los gadgets más esperados en México.

Es la segunda ocasión que lo tengo en mis manos, la primera fue durante su lanzamiento, pero en ambas versiones: Negra (8GB) y Blanca (16GB), en esta ocasión 16 gigas pero en negro, a mi gusto mejor color, el otro es para niñas.

A primera vista

De entrada el diseño si cambió. Ahora tienes la sensación de un teléfono móvil y no un iPod con esteroides como ocurría en la versión pasada, la parte posterior es de un plástico resistente, se raya menos y tiene mejor agarre. Es un poco más grande que la primera versión, debía serlo por el tipo de antenas que incluye.

La pantalla sigue siendo la misma en tamaño y aguante, por ahora no te recomiendo ponerle un protector, espera a que salgan los nuevos, pues Apple le añadió una bocina y por supuesto que las fundas de silicón tapan su sonido, el cual es bueno, no fuerte como un N81, pero resulta agradable tener de fondo tu cel por un buen tiempo.

Si has tenido la oportunidad de tener un iPhone o un iPod Touch no tendrás problema en operarlo; si nunca has interactuado con estos dispositivos, te juro que no perderás horas leyendo el manual, de hecho no incluye, trae una guía rápida de lo que tus dedos pueden hacer pero nada más, no hay otra cosa que tengas que leer, no tienes que hacer nada, simplemente préndelo, conéctalo a la computadora (Windows o Mac) y se desbloqueará. El registro jala pero al final de todo el proceso se queda en que requiere una dirección de Estados Unidos, espero sea por ahora.
Una de las cosas que me impresionó es lo sencillo de utilizar, no cualquier gadget te da esa facilidad de uso (lo había notado con mi Nintendo DS o el control del Xbox pero nunca en un celular).

Aplicaciones:

iTunes 7.7
Para que todo funcione adecuadamente se requiere de una nueva versión del iTunes, con ella se añade todo lo necesario para el Software 2.0 de iPhone y iPod touch. Por cierto, si eres de los que se avientan las letras chiquitas (como yo) verás que ahora puedes controlar el iTunes desde tu iPhone o iPod Touch desde cualquier lugar de tu casa, suena bien.

En la parte de iTunes dentro del iPhone, se puede acceder y tener un previo de la canción que quieras comprar, si tienes una cuenta por supuesto que podrás comprar las rolitas sin broncas, podría ser el primer paso para una iTunes Store México.

AppStore
Por desgracia la parte de AppStore no está accesible, esperaremos el viernes para ver si ya entra. La verdad es lo que más me emociona, quiero ver la gran cantidad de Aplicaciones (muchas gratis y sin costo extra por descarga, obvio nada más el 3G) que podremos bajar.

Cámara
Uno de los problemas que muchos verían del iPhone es su cámara de 2Mpixeles, francamente es pequeña. Si quieres una foto la tomas y listo, me hubiera gustado que tuviera zoom pero sé que alguien se pondrá las pilas y sacará una aplicación. Lo del video, ¡na! Sí está bueno tener video en un celular pero estoy seguro que para mañana estará la aplicación para ello.

GPS
Lo del GPS Asistido puede ser útil si lo requieres, si vas en un vehículo te guiará por la red de 3G o EDGE, incluso puedes marcar trayectorias. Por ahora es todo, pero cuando esté la AppStore se le sacará el mayor provecho.

Juegos
Los juegos, un tema importante, en verdad son un DS-Killer. Los gráficos son mejor que la portátil de Nintendo, eso de no usar botones es una nueva y divertida experiencia;

Archivos de Office
Lo nuevo es ver tus archivos de Office. Por ahora he recibido un par de presentaciones en PowerPoint y se ven bien, ventaja de tener una buena pantalla. Word y Excel se desempeñan como si estuviera en un dispositivo con Windows Mobile 6.0. Por desgracia no se pueden editar y no creo que saquen una App para que pueda hacerlo, lástima, pero al menos está el esfuerzo de traerse a Microsoft Office y así entrar a lo empresarial.

VoiceMail
Interesante cuando no contestas tu teléfono. Siempre tengo la mala costumbre de dejarlo en el escritorio y no puedo contestar, pero ahora puedo saber que me llamaste y dejaste recado, si me caes bien lo escucho.

Teclado
Un gran punto, en México estamos un poco pasaditos de peso, no todos, pero sí muchos tenemos dedos no estéticos y en un principio será difícil escribir, la ventaja es que ahora cuenta con el idioma español en el sistema de texto predictivo (como el que encuentras en los celulares), eso te apoyará bastante.

iPod
No creo que sea un remplazo para tu iPod, sí tiene la capacidad de tocar tus rolas o videos, pero no toda la música que tienes en tu computadora y, aunque sí tiene mucha batería para ambientarte, no es lo único que hace, además, 16GB no son suficientes para todas tus fotos, videos, música, archivos y aplicaciones. Creo que 32GB serían la solución.

Safari
Un buen navegador móvil, súper rápido, es raro que encuentres errores en los sitios o incompatibilidad con ellos. Hacer bookmarks es fácil, escribir ya viste dedos chicos o maña será la opción. Puedes rotar el iPhone para desplegar mejor la página web. No se hicieron grandes cambios. Recuerda dos clicks a la pantalla son un zoom o bien el Pinch funciona perfectamente.

Batería
Un pequeño problema, si usas el 3G ¡uff! se va como agua, si tienes el Wi-Fi prendido, también, si tienes el brillo en lo más alto, peor, en modo iPod sí dura unas horas pero tienes que apagar la comunicación. Este podría ser un problema para los que hablamos más de medio día, algo que aprendí de los Nokia es siempre bajar el brillo de un celular, duran lo que deben durar. Por cierto, en la parte baja del aparato se pueden ver dos tornillos... ¿para que serán? ¿cambio de batería o ya de plano nos aventamos al MOD?

Escritorio
Todo lo que necesario está en el escritorio, tienes opción de agregarle más espacios por si bajaste una gran cantidad de aplicaciones o bookmarks. No creo que encuentres problemas al tener íconos y no menús y submenús en tu pantalla, al contrario, todo se hace puede acceder con un toque y rápido.

Está de más hablar del acelerómetro, de los tres sensores de proximidad, del Bluetooth: es la misma versión que el anterior, no se logra mejorarlo. La recepción hasta ahora va bien, incluso en Santa Fe (lugar perdido) salen y entran las llamadas y detalles que cualquier celular tiene.

Algo que no me gusta, en lo personal, es el cable para conectarlo a la computadora, no tiene la forma que el del iPod, tienes que jalarlo como si fuera un cable cualquiera, no tienes esa parte de apretar y liberar. A jalones se rompen las cosas.

Hasta ahora lo único que extraño de mi antiguo celular son mis contactos, por ser un Windows Mobile no se pueden sincronizar con un Mac OS, así que uso el otro para consultarlos. Te recomiendo siempre bajarle al brillo y usar el botón externo que te lleva al home cuando no tienes idea de cómo salirte de algo.

doe zes reeksen buikspieroefeningen op je bed, net voor het slapengaan.
chat met rare gasten die telkens hetzelfde plaatje gaan draaien wat jij op je pc draaien hebt.

Se spune ca forta nu e solutie, decat in cazuri extreme desigur, atunci cand nu vrei sa intorci si celalalt obraz. Lasand ideea de forta bruta aplicata asupra unui semen, am ajuns la concluzia ca un pumn are uneori un efect benefic. As vrea sa pot sa explic de ce ajuta pumnul, dar nu am o explicatie logica ci doar exemple.

Calculatorul meu scoate sunete ciudate atunci cand il deschid. Nu ma pricep foarte bine la arhitectura calculatorului, nu stau sa caut prin circuite, asa ca actionez brutal si imi lovesc prietenul electronic. Poate de frica, poate de scarba tace saracul si "toarce" in liniste. Concluzia: un pumn ajuta!

Aruncata in plictiseala mi-am pus aseara castile in urechi. Surpriza! I-podul meu ma dezamageste pentru prima data. Initial am zis ca urechea mea stanga s-a blegit, caci sunetele patrundeau cu greu la timpan asa ca am schimbat castile. Insa nici urechea drapta nu s-a dovedit mai receptiva asa ca mi-am dat seama ca nu eu eram problema. una din casti se auzea ca si cum ar fi fost aruncata intr-un butoi. Am tras de fir inutil, am resetat I-podul dar nimic. In pana de alte idei i-am dat un bobarnac de toata frumusetea. Surpriza, si-a revenit! Concluzie: Forta bruta este uneori buna!

Efectele mai putin benefice ale fortei vor iesi probabil in curand la iveala....dar deocamdata recurg la astfel de solutii...ce sa fac, daca merge ma bucur de asta!

Dear Darling,

I hate apple. I Really Hate Apple. They sure are good for health, quite therapeutic, I am told. But they become more and more expensive by the byte. I am talking about the I-Pod you gave me on my last birthday. While I do love listening to my favourite songs all the time, the earphones never seem to stay in place. And with repeated falling, the left ear-phone has completely given way.

Which is why, Ved and I had our face so close to each other when you returned home that evening. Ved had dropped in to meet you, and on seeing the I-Pod, started telling me about your favourite songs in college. You didn't tell me you (along with Ved and Raj) were so fond of 'Summer of '69'. Well, since I did get to know, I was so excited, that I immediately switched on the computer in our bedroom, and downloaded the song from the internet and into the I-Pod, all for your sake. And then we simply couldn't resist listening to it. However, there were two pairs of ears, and only one ear-phone !! So we had to nearly press our ears together to catch the strains of the music. While we were tapping our feet to the music, quite involuntarily, the I-Pod suddenly slipped out of my hand, and both of us stretched out our free hand in an attempt to catch the player before it could hit the ground. (How many times have I asked you to buy the arm-band for the I-Pod!). And that was when you walked into the room.

I can imagine what a surprise it must have been for you, to walk into our bedroom and see Ved and me in such close proximity, holding hands, face seemingly pressed together. Your face reddened, and you repeatedly touched your forehead. Did you have a headache, darling, because of the heat, I mean the sun ?

A funny sight it must have been, watching two women so close to each other. But trust me, Vedalakshmi and I were just enjoying your favourite song. She was, infact, describing how you and Raj used to turn on the music really loud, and dance to the tunes inside the bathroom for hours !! Must have been fun.

How I wish you would tell me all about your college days (the fun and the escapades alike). I am all ears ! By the way, are you stil at Raj's place now ?

And I have a surprise gift waiting for you - the latest Samsung MP3 player (with in-built speaker) - so that you can relive your college memories with some good music.

Please do come home soon, so that we can jive together.

8:22am- The Emo sits up in his bed and plugs his ears with his Ipod. He listens to Dashboard Confessionals. Then gives himself a superficial skin cut. " Pain is life he mumbles." [ Note: This is called 'cutting'. It's just something Emo's do we can't really explain it.]

9:30am - He puts on his clothes which oddly seem two sizes too small. A T-shirt that reads Panic at the Disco, skinny black pants, and bulky DC skate shoes. [Note: Just because they wear DC's Emo's cannot be grouped with legitimate skaters.]

10:00am- The Emo starts the long process of styling his hair. Using lots of gel or hairspray. [Note: For someone that hates life and conforming, the Emo certainly places a lot of emphases on his appearance.]

11:15am- The Emo's hair is styled sufficiently for the day's activities of doing nothing. He remains fixed on his reflection in the mirror mumbling under his breath "Ugh."

12:08pm- The Emo's friend calls his I phone. They make arrangements to 'hang' at the mall.

12:27pm- The Emo gets into his father's Mercedes C class to pick his friend up.

12:51pm- The two Emo's arrive at the mall. Get an Orange Julius, and a slice of pizza. They proceed to Hot Topic, Spencer's, Zoomies, and DC.

3:17pm- They leave for work at the Home Depot. [Note: The only reason the Emo works is because that's the only way that daddy let's him use the car. He says it will help the Emo build character.]

For the next four hours the Emo pushes shopping carts around the parking lot. Giving disgruntled looks to the tradesmen pulling in and out of parking stalls. "Conformists" he mumbles under his breath. We assume the Emo mumbles to avoid having his ass handed to him on a saw horse.

7:45pm- The Emo's leave work and head to the Taco Bell to order a late snack. Inside the Emo's order in an odd manner. "Um, I'll have a (hair toss, hair toss) um (hair toss) number (hair toss) um 4 (hair toss, hair toss) with um no (hair toss) lettuce, (hair toss) and a um Dr. (hair toss) Pepper. (hair toss) [Note: This is just fucking irritating to the average American.]

8:30pm- The Emo drops his friend off and heads home.

8:45pm- The Emo gets home and sits with the family for dinner. His mother asks why he doesn't eat. "Me and Jon ate Taco Bell." he says. "You knew your father was bringing home chicken. I guess I don't get it." "Guess not stupid." he replies. "You watch your damn mouth boy!" His father angrily interjects. "You mother works too damn hard to be treated like that, you goddamn brat." "I hate you all anyways. I didn't ask to be born, and I wish I were dead. I hate you." [Note: At this point his dad should've beat the shit out of him.] The Emo runs upstairs to his room. and stuffs his earbuds in. "Why is life so painful? Cause pain is life."

9:00pm- The Emo cries himself to sleep, listening to My Chemical Romance.

My hearing sucks. Due to a condition involving the stapes bone (trivia fact: this is the smallest bone in your body) - I am missing 50% of the hearing in one of my ears. So if you are ever speaking to me and I am responding with a blank stare and frozen grin on my face, there is a good chance I have no idea what you are talking about! Luckily, this being the internet, it does not matter - ha ha!

This condition has caused me to turn into somewhat of a Hearing Czar, monitoring all sound in the house. Yeah, this makes for quite the fun mom!

So, note to all of you I-Pod wearin' fools out there (kidding!): Turn down the volume on your earbuds to low, unless you want to have the hearing of your average 90year old while you are still in your twenties....

Ugh, Not again!

So, this not been the finest weekend of my life. Indeed far from it. I lost my bag, complete with i-pod, diary, sketchbook and Justin's 'Understanding Comics' book. So that was fairly fucking annoying but 100% completely my own retarded fault. Put simply I got drunk and went home without my bag and i-pod and diary and well you get the idea ...

And then just to feel better, on Saturday I went to Sam's Barbers to get my first haircut in about 8 months and although I ask for just a bit of the lenght to be taken and the hair to be tidied up a bit, this sentence, in it's long and tumultuous journey from my mouth to the hairdresser's ears translated as "gimme a lesbien's haircut". This is not 100% my fault so I'm a little more rightfully pissed off about that.

All in all, not the best few days. Although I'm now so sick of stupid things that have happened to me because of the beer that I'm gonna give it up for a while. I'm not saying full time because I've done that before and I rarely keep to it. Also, every time previous that I said that sentence "I'm giving up drinking", it was a reaction to something horrible I did and felt guilty about. But now, I'm just bored and annoyed by drinking. When I feel like I'll enjoy it again I'll start back. Hopefully with a more sensible attitude.

Memorial Day

Today was a beautiful day, with temperatures in the high 80's. The very bright sun, and mistral like wind made our region of Florida seem like somewhere else. The waves cooperated, although they were only about waist high. However, that was an excuse enough to spend the day, all day, surfing. I wore my waterproof i-Pod, and jammed to Coltrane while flying down the high line of the wall of the wave. I wiped out listening to Zappa, and sat outside communing with nature to the sounds of "Hotel California." After many hours of surfing, I finally paddled in, really appreciating this summer swell. The swell will probably be gone tomorrow, but the memories of it will remain in my head for awhile.

I've spent a lot of time surfing as of late. I've also been working on my book, finishing another chapter and changing my outline slightly. I plan on doing some number crunching tonight, but will probably let all my computers work while I read a book, drink some absinthe, and listen to some Mozart. My 80 year old French girlfriend just came back from a visit to her home town of Avignon, and gave me a bottle of absinthe....the real stuff, not the faux stuff sold here in the USA. John wants to get wasted on it tonight, but I told him that absinthe is like Mezcal in that the special properties are all the stuff of urban legend.

My drawings arrived by courier, and I'm pleased. I have no plans on framing them for awhile, and will put them in storage for awhile...with the rest of our collection. The gallery owner who's storing our collection asked me if he could display a few pieces, and I had to say no. I'm paying him to store it safely, and not to display it. My sister is coveting my collection, and I joked that she's going to put potassium cyanide in my food to collect. What she doesn't know is that I'm going to give her a small drawing for her birthday, one by Edgar Degas.

Meanwhile, I can't wait to return to trading tomorrow after this long weekend. My heart is still very heavy, and I don't think it ever will be fixed. Meanwhile, I'll have to make lemonade with the lemons I've been handed.

IPod quality problems

God damn, I got a IPod from my girlfriend for valentinesday (thanks again baby) and today the headphones broke. Fucking annoying this is. I dont want to turn the IPhone done or anything since I have plenty of friends who own an IPod and havent had any problems at all with it. I guess I just have been unlucky, or maybe not? Anyway, I will go to the shop tomorrow and try to get some new ones. I must say that I generally like Apple and think they make good products. I own a MacBook myself. Always had been sceptical about Apple computers since I always felt that they were overprized, but actually they are not and I got a good deal on it as well. Lets see now about the customer service......
