Saputo ciò, ho deciso di farmi una gita a Hvar 2 anni fa. Siccome ho passione per le isole del Mediterraneo e ne ho viste tante, abbiamo deciso con i miei amici di fare un breve giro lì della durata di 3 giorni. Siamo partiti da Pescara con la barca in 4 e dopo 3 ore di godimento del mare tempestoso siamo finalmente arrivati. Il porto di Hvar è veramente carino e la piazza principale e il castello che c' e soppra di città profumano della storia antica. Non importa ciò che state cercando nella vostra vacanza, lo potete trovare qui, la vita notturna e l'architettura di una città cosmopolita di Hvar, gite in barca , spiaggie di sabbia vicino alla città Jelsa (Gelsa), il mare cristallino  e l'alloggio privato di la qualità in appartamenti e camere in case private.

Noi siamo rimasti nella nostra barca a dormire tutte tre notte. E' stato molto bello addormentarsi sulle onde che dondolavano. I giorni abbiamo passati andando con la barca a vedere isolette vicine di cui mi ricordo Lastovo dove mi è piaciuto di più. Di sere andavamo a mangiare la roba croata che ha buon gusto ed è sazia abbastanza. Dopo la cena andavamo a bere gli ottimi drink in tanti locali che ci sono situati proprio vicino al mare con la atmosfera un poco orientale.

As we reported Stari Grad, Hvar was recently added to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List and is now along with Plitvice Lakes National Park, the Old Town of Dubrovnik, Trogir, Diocletian’s Palace, the Euphrasian Basilica and the Cathedral of St Jamesh one of the most recognised places in Croatia.

So, but what's so special about the area? We'll take you literally to the beautiful island with a small history overview and introduce you to some special places in Stari Grad, read on!

Stari Grad, literally Old Town, is the place of the oldest human settlement on the island, and one of the first of all the Adriatic islands.  According to different sources it was settled during antiquity, first by an indigenous Hvar culture and later by the ancient Greeks.

The name of the island is without doubt Greek in origin, from Pharos (lighthouse). From it the Romans derived the name Pharia. The Dalmatian Romans then derived from this Fara, and the newly settled Croats in the early Middle Ages changed this to Hvar, as the old Slavonic consonant "f" was subsumed by the consonant group hv. The Dalmatian Romans, under the influence of Croatian pronunciation in the medieval documents spelt the name as Quara or Quarra.

The harmonious symbiosis of human settlements on the is land of Hvar and the landscape is especially impressive in some old villages and small towns. Some of them were built as cottages for shepherds ("trini") on the eastern and south sides of the island. One can enjoy their specific folk architecture and admire the old household objects which can still be found in some houses.

Stari Grad is the collective name for several small towns which grew and were later abandoned at the same place. The plan of the Greek Pharos, reconstructed hypothetically, resembles a Roman town-planning scheme with an orthogonal screen. Only the south eastern angle of the town has been archaeologically investigated. The remains of the ancient town walls have been presewed in the cellar of the house of Tadić Gromotorov, but they are also visible to the south of the early Christian complex of the double basilicas of Sts John and Mary (with the baptistery from the 5th/6th centuries) decorated with floor mosaics. Archaeologists have discovered the corner of the original Greek Pharos or lighthouse there.

The stereometry of the cleaned town walls, numerous remains of Illyrian, Greek and Roman settlements, as well as early Christian, early Croatian and Romanesque layers have confirmed what the archaeologists supposed for centuries - that the Pharos, in its stratigraphy, is probably the richest locality of our archaeological heritage, and that the whole island experienced an apogee at the end of ancient times.

Roman inscriptions and reliefs on the Baroque bell-tower in front of the parish church and at the town square next to it, as well as the more recent secular and sacral inscriptions built on to the walls of various houses, confirm the importance of Stari Grad throughout history. The bust of Milo of Croton (the best known Greek athlete) with a club in his hands and the bull on his shoulders once stood in the square. Stari Grad experienced its second high point in the l8th century with the development of maritime trade and wine-growing.

Sites:
The parish church in Stari Grad, with its characteristic horizontal cornices, the central door  way and a semicircular gable, together with its three-aisled interior with ceiling in late-Gothic style is the work of the local stonemason's workshops. Ivan Pomenić from Korčula constructed the main altar in 1637. He was the premier master until the middle of the century. Undoubtedly, the triptych by Francesco da Santacrose is the most beautiful artefact in the interior of the church. Franjo Škarpa, during the 18th century, began the building of a separate bell-tower.

The fortified Dominican Monastery of St Peter the Martyr was founded in 1481, but was badly damaged during an attack by the Algerian pirate Uluz Ali in 1571. The defensive walls on the east and west sides of the monastery were erected immediately after that event. The tomb of the poet Petar Hektorović was once held in the church, together with the chapel of his family (built according to a contract dated 1546). The poet ordered from Jacopo Tintoretto a painting depicting the Mourning of Christ to put in the chapel.

Local tradition says that Petar had his own portrait painted in the figure of Nicodemus, in the company of his only daughter and her husband. It is now exhibited in the Monastery Museum. This also houses various Greek inscriptions and Roman reliefs, local objects of ethnographic value and a collection of various liturgical songs and chants from the 14th to the 16th centuries, including the oldest composition in the Croatian language "Let Us Bless Our Lord". The church was completely renovated at the end of the 19th century and it houses paintings by Palma the Vounger, Baldassare D'Anna, and probably the most beautiful crucifix on the Croatian coast by Giacomo Piazetta from 1703.

The following small churches are of interest: the church of St Nicholas on the way to the cemetery with a few votive paintings presented by seamen, the church of St Jerome, next to the town swimming centre, a part of the previous Glagolitic hospice, and the church of St Rocco with an inscription on its steps saying that there are Roman thermae below. It is situated to the east of Hektorović's Tvrdalj.

The best-known building in Stari Grad is The Tvrdalj, the fortified building of the poet Petar Hektorović.dating from the first half of the 16th century. It was renovated in the Baroque style in the 18th C. and partly restored in the 19th C. Hektorović's Tvrdalj is an exceptional work of architecture which differs from similar buildings of his time, as does his long poem "Ribanje i ribarsko prigovaranje" (Fishing and Fishing Complaints) surpass any other literary textes in the Croatian language of the 16th century. In the centre of The Tvrdalj, there is a tower above the fish-pond. This pond was constantly stocked with grey mullet. He kept chicken on the ground floor enjoying the natural way of life. Lucija, the Tertiary Franciscan nun, daughter of one of his builders, lived on the first floor taking care of his household. An observation post ("repčar") and a dove cote were at the top of the tower. He conceived the whole complex as a kind of model universe, with fish living in sea water, human beings walking on the ground and God's creatures high in the air, and devoted his tower-house to the Creator (OMNIVM CONDITORI) - as is writ ten in one of many inscriptions he put there. Petar Hektorović was obsessed by the ephemerality of time. Time is symbolised in the years he lacks to complete his work, the ivy and reed which plait ed themselves round the ancient town and are still visible in the mosaic boxes next to The Tvrdalj it self, as well as in the streets leading to nearby churches, and to Gothic and Renaissance summer houses belonging to other noble men of Hvar (the remnants of Hanibal Lucić's house are nearby). The famous 16th century is land laudatory writer, Vinko Pribojević, similarly described the ruins of many big buildings, chipped statues of heroes made of Parma stone, and stone floors with figures of various animals and stars.

The Tvrdalj brings together two types of architectural artefacts - the chateau and the summer house - in the specific solution of a fortified Renaissance villa. It also has another specific purpose de scribed in the stone inscriptions: PRO ITINERANTIBUS and PRO PAUPERIBUS (For Travellers and For the Poor). Petar Hektorović's Tvrdalj was full of inscriptions (in Latin, Croatian and one in Italian) mostly of high moral character as was Renaissance habit and also of the new Counter-reformation age, which does not differentiate completely between the sacred and the profane.

Stari Grad on the Adriatic island of Hvar is a cultural landscape that has remained practically intact since it was first colonized by Ionian Greeks from Paros in the 4th century BC. The original agricultural activity of this fertile plain, mainly centring on grapes and olives, has been maintained since Greek times to the present. The site is also a natural reserve. The landscape features ancient stone walls and trims, or small stone shelters, and bears testimony to the ancient geometrical system of land division used by the ancient Greeks, the chora which has remained virtually intact over 24 centuries.

Durante il suo ricco passato faceva parte dello stato illirico ed era anche sotto il dominio dell' Impero Romano. Grazie a tale passato l'isola di Hvar si distingue per il suo patrimonio storico-culturale. Interessante da visitare è la piazza cittadina che si trova nel centro della parte antica della città. Sopra la piazza si trovano i palazzi parzialmente conservati dei nobili croati. Tra i monumenti importanti come il duomo di St. Stefano, il palazzo Paladini, la fortezza Fortica, la chiesa di St. Kuzma e Damian, il convento dei francescani e altri edifici monumentali il più importante sicuramente è il più antico teatro in Croazia – l'Arsenal. Oggigiorno Hvar è uno dei centri più conosciuti e più sviluppati in Croazia. Nel 1997 la prestigiosa rivista turistica "Traveler" ha inserito Hvar tra le 10 isole più belle del mondo. Sull'isola di Hvar sono anche noti il turismo di caccia, di pesca sottomarina e di caccia alle lepri e ai fagiani.

Can you see it, taste it? Where were you when you ate that fabulous rosetta desert? What did you learn about the town when you ate their famous fish stew?

 I think it's a great idea. What better way to embrace and anchor yourself in a place than via the digestive tract? or the taste-buds?

For people like my sister, they have the ability to recall towns and places through their visceral memory bank. Her trip through eastern Europe will sound and taste much finer when seasoned with memories of chorbe-de-fasola (bean soup!) than it would by her traumatised memory of being fined by an abrasive Bulgarian guard on a Brashov bus, because she didnt have a ticket.

A fair deal of our Travels are all in the mind. My own approach to travel isnt as broad minded nor as cruisy as my sister or my neices. I have a default position, when out of my comfort zone - when confronted by something out of the ordinary or off the plan I have formulated - I invariably  panic about what will happen, when it will happen if it will happen etc.

For instance, 3 days ago, we were on a ferry from Dubrovnik to Hvar, and the ferry sailed right past the town of Hvar. What!! It was calmly chugging up the coast of an island that looked completely deserted, thick with pine trees and no sign of life. I started to pray. Will we get off the boat? Have we now missed it? Should I have done something to remind them we were on the boat? Have we wasted the accommodation money? Are we instead going to Split further up the Dalmation Coast? What will we do there?

Gab was no good to me, she was off somewhere on the boat, looking at the scenery, photographing, as excited as a child on an adventure. Cruising with the cruisy.

Meanwhile, I am below, praying a mantra,  in a hot head of panic. None of the reasonable facts made their way through the shroud of anxiety.  I forgot how we had checked earlier the ferry was going to arrive at Hvar at 4.00. How the ticket said it was going to Stari Grad (which on the map was on the island of Hvar); how there were a  lot of other people on the boat going to Hvar. None of those facts could stop the panic.  I was left alone with a repetive prayer. Praying for what though? The ferry to turn around? an announcement (in English please)? Anything really.

Gab arrived back down at Deck 4. Come upstairs and see us arrive! smell the pine trees! Feel the breeze! Leave the bags! come on!!! Dont miss it!

So there we were up on Deck 5 watching the coast chug past, redolent with smells of rich green pine. She was none the wiser about where we were going, but she wasnt worried. A woman came up to stand beside us. She was alone, and we three were the only ones on our part of the deck. She smiled watching the island slide past even further.

Are you going to Hvar ? she asked, and then proceeded to explain how the ferry would pull into the old port, and as they had been in the tourist business for over 100 years would ensure we would be safely deposited at our hotel and would we like a photo?   And as we returned to get our bags, Gabby said there is your angel - the answer to your prayers.

Well the island is spectacular, and our taste buds and bodies have been embalmed and delighted with warm waters, delightful flavours, sun rain, sweet wine and good sleeps. Everything the island (which does indeed boast over 100 years as a holiday-health spa destination) promised and much more.

Looking back, as always, I am ashamed of my panic, and disappointed with myself to think my age or experience hasnt changed any of those default reactions I have. But thats me, I guess, and I have to digest that along with everything else this trip is teaching me about.

Adesso però il problema è dove... Di seguito porterò la mia opinione, non vincolante ovviamente...

ISTRIA: sono stato circa 10 anni fa a pola e non mi ha proprio affascinato, mi ha dato un senso di tristezza.

Pro: Molto comoda, in poche ore ci si arriva;

Contro: Il brutto dell'Istria sono i prezzi che con l'aumentare del turismo, sono lievitati, seguendo le leggi di mercato(+domanda +prezzo).  Altra cosa negativa è la folla di turisti!!! Inoltre il mare "bello bello" si trova solo a premantura.

Zara(Zadar): c'è stato lo zio della mia ragazza e ha detto che è un bel posto.

Pro: Mare molto bello, non troppo affollata. Alla sera c'è vita. Basso costo degli alloggi.

Contro: non proprio comodo, sono 600km da Vicenza circa. Però le strade sono molto migliorate, tutta autostrada!

Isola di Hvar: maio stato, ma si trovano parecchi video su Youtube, e si possono leggere esperienze positive in tutti i forum di viaggio.

Pro: Mare meraviglioso, costo molto basso degli alloggi, presenza di vita notturna e gioventù (sono quelli che fanno i video). Dicono inoltre che a Hvar non piova mai!!!

Contro: Scomoda, infatti o si va per strada, attraversando tutta la Croazia fino a Spalato dove si prende il traghetto, oppure si va fino ad Ancona e da li si prende un traghetto diretto. Io propongo la seconda soluzione, perchè fin che sei sul traghetto sei già in ferie, non devi guidare e ti puoi riposare.

Concludendo posso dire che io preferirei fare qulache chilometro in più e andare nell'Isola di Hvar, così almeno da essere sicuri di trovare un bel mare e un po' di movimento la sera.

Il problema è che due nostri amici vogliono fare una sola settimana, e andare fin la per stare solo pochi giorni non è il massimo. Almeno 10 giorni. Però lo stesso vale sia per Hvar che per Zara. Mentre l'Istria è già più fattibile, ma il costo degli appartamenti sale, e di molto.

Comunque io non mi faccio meno di 10 giorni di ferie, non esiste! Sto lavorando, ho fatto calcio tutto l'anno, ho fatto ripetizioni a mio cugino e mi sono laureato, vuoi vedere che non riesco neanche a farmi 10 giorni di relax???? Non esiste!

We spent two fantastic days in Hvar and enjoyed wonderful hospitality, beautiful scenery and delicious food.

Hvar Town

Luck was on our side on the ferry when Louise was approached by a lady sitting near us who wanted to know if we needed a room. We said yes and we were soon being taken to a huge apartment overlooking the town.

The rest of the time was spent strolling around the town and soaking up as much sun as possible.

Good old Croatian television was also kind to televise the Liverpool v Arsenal match so I got to witness Liverpool move into the semi finals with an easy win over Arsenal. What a trip!!!

We arrived in Korcula yesterday and have just enjoyed a fantastic lunch and will do a bit more wandering this afternoon. It is off to Dubrovnik tomorrow for our last couple of days in Croatia before we cross the border into Montenegro.

Kroatien befindet sich an der Ostküste der Adria. Zur Landfläche gehört ein Teil der Dinariden und der Pannonischen Tiefebene.

Das Land liegt im geographischen Grenzraum zwischen Mittel- und Südosteuropa. In kultureller Hinsicht befand sich

Kroatien stets an der Grenzlinie zwischen westeuropäischen bzw. orientalischen Einflüssen.

Umwelt und Wasser

117 Strände sind in Kroatien 2007 mit einer Blauen Flagge gekennzeichnet^[3]

Kroatien gehört laut Analyse der Welternährungsorganisation zu den 30 wasserreichsten Staaten dieser Welt und nimmt europaweit den sehr hohen 3. Platz ein mit insgesamt 32.818 m³ an erneuerbaren Wasserreserven pro Kopf und Jahr^[4]. Der Weltwasserentwicklungsbericht 2005 (World Water Development Report) der Vereinten Nationen spricht von 23.890 m³ an jährlich erneuerbaren Wasserreserven pro Kopf und Jahr.^[5]

Kroatien gehört zu den wenigen Staaten mit organisierter Wasserordnungspolitik. Schon 1891 verabschiedete der Sabor ein Wasserrechtsgesetz des Königreiches von Kroatien und Slawonien, das gesetzliche Regelungen für Gewässer, Flussbetten, die Küste, die Wassernutzung, die Regulierung von Wasserflüssen, wie auch den Flutschutz, Wasserschutz, Wasserschutzvereinigungen und vieles weiteres vorsieht. Die kroatische Adria ist nach einer ADAC-Untersuchung aus dem Jahr 2006 der sauberste Teil des Mittelmeers. Im Environmental Sustainability Index der Universität Yale, welcher die Lage des Umweltschutzes in einem Staat in seiner Gesamtheit betrachtet, belegte Kroatien 2005 weltweit den 19. Platz.

Altertum und frühes Mittelalter

Die ersten Siedlungen an der Dalmatinischen Küste entstanden im 12. und 11. Jahrhundert v. Chr. im Zuge der Ionischen bzw. auch später der großen griechischen Kolonisation. So geht die Gründung der Siedlung Split auf diese Zeit zurück (Split von gr. Aspalatos oder Spalatos = Höhle) ^[17]. Im 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. erwähnte der griechische Historiker Herodot außerdem die im Werk beschriebenen Illyrer (ein indogermanisches Volk) als zusätzlich ansässig gewordenes Volk. Ab der Mitte des 2. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. wuchs der politische Einfluss der Römer auf die illyrischen Stämme zwischen der Küste und der pannonischen Ebene. Im Jahr 34 v. Chr. verleibte Oktavian, der spätere Kaiser Augustus, dieses Gebiet Rom ein. Zu Beginn des 1. Jahrhunderts wurde die Provinz Dalmatia, benannt nach dem Stamm der Delmatae, gebildet. Im Jahr 293 wurde unter der Herrschaft des Kaisers Diokletian die Provinz entlang des Flusses Drina geteilt.

Im 6. Jahrhundert rückte das zentralasiatische Reitervolk der Awaren in das von den Langobarden geräumte Pannonien ein. Die Kroaten wurden im 7. Jahrhundert vom byzantinischen Kaiser Herakleios in ihr heutiges Siedlungsgebiet gerufen, um ihm beim Kampf gegen die Awaren zu helfen (siehe auch Landnahme der Slawen auf dem Balkan). Nach dem Bericht des Byzantinischen Kaisers Konstantin VII. Porphyrogennetos, stammten die Kroaten aus dem Gebiet des heutigen Galizien.

Der Name der Kroaten ist erstmals in einer Quelle aus dem 10. Jahrhundert belegt. Der Name selber hat keine slawischen Wurzeln, sondern stammt mit größter Wahrscheinlichkeit aus dem persischen Raum. Das Ethnonym der Kroaten ist möglicherweise ein Ehrentitel mit funktionaler und sozialer Bedeutung des Awarenreiches, der nicht nur an der östlichen Adriaküste, sondern auch am Ostrand der Alpen, in Nordböhmen, Sachsen und Südpolen belegt ist.

Im Jahr 879 wird Fürst Branimir von Papst Johannes VIII. mit „dux Croatorum“ angeschrieben und angesprochen, was seinerzeit einer Anerkennung des mittelalterlichen Kroatien gleichkommt. Dieser politische motivierten Krönung Westroms folgte unmittelbar später die erneute Einverleibung in das Byzantinische Kaiserreich. Der um 925 zum König gekrönte Tomislav (910–928), konnte wohl zwischenzeitig die Ungarn als auch die Bulgaren zurückschlagen

Kroatisches Königreich (924–1102)

Domagojs Enkel, Tomislav, wurde 924 der erste König Kroatiens und gleichzeitig war dies auch der erste Königstitel in der Geschichte der Südslawen. Papst Johannes X. erkannte diesen Titel sofort an. Während seiner Herrschaft fielen die Magyaren im pannonischen Becken ein. Tomislav verteidigte sein Königreich, das aus Zentralkroatien, Slawonien und Teilen Dalmatiens und Bosniens bestand, erfolgreich gegen die Ungarn. Die Blütezeit erreichte das Königreich unter der Regentschaft von König Petar Krešimir IV. Unter seiner Herrschaft wurde im Jahr 1059 die Kirche in Anlehnung an den Römischer Ritus reformiert. Dies war hinsichtlich des Schisma von 1054 und der Treue zu Rom von Bedeutung. Das Königreich existierte bis ins Jahr 1102 weiter.

Kroatien in Personalunion mit Ungarn (1102-1526)

Die Personalunion mit dem Königreich Ungarn blieb, mit Ausnahme der Türkenkriege im 16., 17. und frühen 18. Jahrhundert, und einiger anderer Unterbrechungen, in verschiedener Form bis 1918 bestehen.

Im Jahr 1102 erfolgte die Krönung des ungarischen Königs Koloman zum kroatischen König in Biograd bei Zadar und dadurch kam Kroatien in Personalunion durch ein Abkommen (Pacta conventa (Kroatien)) zu Ungarn, mit eigener Verwaltung unter einem kroatischen Ban (Befehlshaber).

Osmanisches Reich (1451–1699) und Habsburger (1527–1918)

Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts erlitten Ungarn und Kroatien schwere Gebietsverluste durch die Expansion des Osmanischen Reiches. Um militärisch Beistand zu erhalten und weitere Gebietsverluste an die Osmanen zu verhindern, rief der kroatische Sabor die Habsburger auf, die Regentschaft über Kroatien zu übernehmen. Nach zahlreichen Schlachten gelangte im 18. Jahrhundert ein Großteil Kroatiens unter Verwaltung der Habsburger. Die historischen kroatischen Regionen Dalmatien und Teile Istriens standen seit dem Spätmittelalter unter der Herrschaft der Republik Venedig. Die Republik Dubrovnik konnte als einziges der Gebiete des heutigen Kroatien vom 14. Jahrhundert bis zum Jahr 1808 ihre staatliche Unabhängigkeit bewahren.

Kroatien hatte jahrhundertelang die Funktion als Bollwerk Europas gegen das Osmanische Reich. Dies geschah auch durch die Schaffung der sogenannten Militärgrenze in der sich auch in bedeutender Zahl Orthodoxe Christen ansiedelten. Zeitweilig erhielten die Bewohner der Militärgrenze Privillegien in Form des Statuta Wallachorum.

Nach den napoleonischen Kriegen kamen 1815 ganz Dalmatien und Istrien unter österreichische Herrschaft, wurden jedoch aus politischen Gründen („divide et impera“) nicht verwaltungsmäßig mit dem übrigen Kroatien vereinigt, sondern zu separaten Kronländern innerhalb der österreichischen Reichshälfte, während das Königreich Kroatien und Slawonien zur ungarischen Reichshälfte gehörte.

In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts wuchs unter der kroatischen Bevölkerung das Verlangen nach mehr Selbstbestimmungsrechten. In den Revolutionsjahren um 1848 verkörperte insbesondere Ban Josip Jelačić die Symbolfigur kroatischer Interessen, welche nach Eigenverwaltung strebten. Den nationalen Bestrebungen wurde jedoch durch den Österreichisch-Ungarischen Ausgleich und den Ungarisch-Kroatischen Ausgleich 1867 ein Ende gesetzt. Das 19. Jahrhundert war auch geprägt vom so genannten Illyrismus, einer Bewegung, die zahlreiche kulturelle Veränderungen durchsetzte. Es kam zu einer Standardisierung der kroatischen Sprache und gleichzeitig wurde die Idee geboren, alle Südslawen in einem Staat zu vereinen.

Entstehung des Königreichs der Serben, Kroaten und Slowenen (1918–1941)

Kroatien begann sich nach Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges im Jahre 1918 aus der österreichisch-ungarischen Monarchie zu lösen. Italienische Truppen begannen daraufhin mit der Besetzung von kroatischen Gebieten längs der Ostküste der Adria, da Italien im Londoner Vertrag von 1915 deren Annexion zugesagt worden war. Angesichts dessen beschloss der Nationalrat der Slowenen, Kroaten und Serben Ende November 1918 die sofortige Vereinigung Kroatiens mit dem Königreich Serbien, woraus dann das Königreich der Serben, Kroaten und Slowenen entstand. Viele Kroaten lehnten aber die monarchistische Staatsform ab, fühlten sich benachteiligt und verlangten für Kroatien die Gründung einer Republik. Dazu kam, dass die Verfassung eine zentralistische Staatsorganisation und die Auflösung der historischen Provinzen vorsah, was den Serben als zahlenmäßig größtem Volk de facto die Vorherrschaft sicherte.

1929 löste König Aleksandar I. das Parlament auf und benannte den Staat in Königreich Jugoslawien um. Er regierte diktatorisch vorwiegend mit Hilfe serbischer Offiziere. Als Reaktion hierauf gründete Ante Pavelić die von Mussolini unterstützte faschistische Ustaša-Bewegung.

Kroatien im Zweiten Weltkrieg

Vier Tage nach dem Überfall Deutschlands auf das Königreich Jugoslawien marschierte am 10. April 1941 die Wehrmacht in Zagreb ein. Am 17. April 1941 kapitulierte Jugoslawien vor den Achsenmächten. Kroatien wurde zum deutschen Vasallenstaat. Mit Unterstützung der Achsenmächte hatte die Ustaša unter Ante Pavelić bereits am 10. April den Unabhängigen Staat Kroatien (NDH) ausgerufen. Faktisch war der Ustascha-Führer Ante Pavelić unter dem Titel Poglavnik Staatschef des Unabhängigen Staates Kroatien. Er errichtete eine faschistische Diktatur, welche mehrheitlich Serben, aber auch Juden, Roma und kroatische Antifaschisten systematisch verfolgte und ermordete. Traurige Berühmtheit hat dabei das Konzentrationslager Jasenovac erlange, das auch als kroatisches Auschwitz in die Geschichte einging. Da Demokratische Wahlen, die das Ustaša-Regime vor dem kroatischen Volk legitimiert hätten, wurden nicht abgehalten. Vom Sommer 1941 an begann ein bewaffneter Aufstand der kroatischen Kommunisten gegen das Ustaša-Regime, die als Teil der jugoslawischen Partisanenbewegung im Laufe der Jahre 1942 und 1943 einen großen Teil des Landes unter ihre Kontrolle bringen konnten. Neben Tito war Andrija Hebrang eine der bedeutendsten Führungspersönlichkeiten.

Kroatien als Teilrepublik Jugoslawiens (1945–1991)

Nach Kriegsende wurde Kroatien eine von sechs Teilrepubliken (Sozialistische Republik Kroatien) der neu gegründeten Föderativen Volksrepublik Jugoslawien, ab 1963 Sozialistische Föderative Republik Jugoslawien (SFRJ), unter der Regierung Titos.

Im Jahre 1971 wurde die Protest- und Reformbewegung Kroatischer Frühling niedergeschlagen. Nach dem Tod Titos 1980 nahmen die Spannungen zwischen Kroatien und der von Serben dominierten jugoslawischen Regierung zu. Ende der achtziger Jahre hatten sich aus den Bestrebungen nach mehr Autonomie die Forderungen nach der Unabhängigkeit von Jugoslawien entwickelt. Der Kroate Franjo Tuđman, der an der Seite Titos gegen das Ustascha-Regime gekämpft hatte, erlangte bei der kroatischen Bevölkerung großen Zuspruch. Nachdem die geschwächte jugoslawische Regierung ein Mehrparteiensystem zugelassen hatte, gründete Tudjman 1990 die Kroatische Demokratische Gemeinschaft (HDZ), die bald den Charakter einer Volkspartei annahm. Seine Forderung nach einem unabhängigen Kroatien löste bei den Serbischstämmigen, die laut damaliger Verfassung das zweite Staatsvolk darstellten, Proteste aus, doch die HDZ gewann bei den Wahlen die Mehrheit der Parlamentssitze, und Tudjman wurde zum Präsidenten gewählt.

Unabhängigkeitskrieg Kroatiens (1991-1995)

In der Folge eines abgehaltenen Referendums über die Unabhängigkeit Kroatiens, in dem 93,2 % der Wahlbeteiligten bei einer Wahlbeteiligung von 93,5 % für die Souveränität stimmten, erklärte Kroatien im Juni 1991 unter Franjo Tuđman seine Unabhängigkeit. Die internationale Anerkennung folgte vom 15. Januar 1992 an. Der Wechsel von der Einparteiendiktatur hin zur parlamentarischen Demokratie erfolgte ohne Zwischenfälle.

Die de facto von Serbien dominierte Jugoslawische Volksarmee versuchte die Unabhängigkeitsbestrebungen militärisch niederzuwerfen. Der militärische Versuch, kroatische Gebiete sowohl mit großem als auch geringem Anteil an serbischer Bevölkerung von Kroatien abzuspalten und mittelfristig an Serbien anzugliedern, mündete in dem fast vier Jahre andauerndem Kroatienkrieg, der erst nach militärischen Erfolgen der Kroaten 1995 mit dem Vertrag von Dayton vom 14. Dezember 1995 endete.

Kroatien nach Erlangung der Unabhängigkeit

Im Oktober 2001 unterzeichnete Kroatien ein Stabilisierungs- und Assoziierungsabkommen mit der Europäischen Union.^[18] Es sichert Kroatien den freien Zugang zum Europäischen Binnenmarkt, verlangt aber auch umfangreiche Wirtschafts- und Sozialreformen. Seit dem 18. Juni 2004 ist Kroatien offizieller EU-Beitrittskandat. Allerdings begannen die Beitrittsverhandlungen erst nach einem Beschluss der EU-Außenminister vom 3. Oktober 2005, da Kroatien bis dahin nach Auffassung der EU-Kommission nur mangelhaft mit dem Haager Kriegsverbrechertribunal kooperiert hatte.

Hier geht es darum, dass an der kroatischen Küste die Erde aktiver sei als bisher gedacht.
Der Erdkundler Richard Bennet berichtet, dass es wohl neue Inseln in der kroatischen Adria geben wird.
Der Zeitpunkt sei noch ungewiss aber es wird eher langsam und Hunderttausende bis Millionen Jahre gehen, bis sie aus dem Wasser steigen.
Dass der Meeresboden dort überhaupt noch in Bewegung ist kommt überraschend.

Auch ist wohl erwiesen, dass die Insel Hvar wandere:
Seit 1994 installieren kroatische Geodäten zur Vermessung des Landes Messpunkte und bestimmen deren Lage mit GPS. Dabei zeigte sich die Bewegung, etwa an einem Punkt auf der Insel Hvar, das die Insel 4 - 5 Millimeter pro Jahr wandert.

Ferner wird in dem Artikel berichtet, dass es die Adria irgendwann nicht mehr geben wird.
Denn die beiden Küsten – italienische und kroatische – rücken mit 4,5 Kilometern pro Jahrmillion aufeinander zu.
In 50 bis 70 Millionen Jahren werden sie sich nach den Kalkulation des Erdkundlers Richard Bennet vereinen.

Das auf einer Landzunge gelegene Seebad Zadar ist die nördlichste Stadt Dalmatiens. Die Altstadt ist geprägt von der Architektur der Venezier. Sakraler Mittelpunkt Zadars ist Sveti Stosija, der Dom aus dem 12. Jahrhundert, mit seiner reichen Innenausstattung. Nicht minder berühmt ist die Rundkirche Sankt Donatus aus dem 9. Jahrhundert, ein beeindruckendes Zeugnis frühchristlicher Zeit. Zahlreiche Relikte der Vergangenheit Dalmatiens werden im Archäologischen Museum der Stadt der Nachwelt erhalten.

Die größte und bedeutendste Stadt Dalmatiens ist das, auf der Halbinsel Marjan gelegene, Split. Das Zentrum Mitteldalmatiens erstreckt sich am Fuße des Marjan-Berges. Der riesige Diokletianspalast beherrscht das Stadtbild. Um 300 erbaut, diente er dem römischen Kaiser Diokletian als Wohnstätte. Die rechteckige, über 200 Meter lange bauliche Meisterleistung ist zum Großteil erhalten. Mausoleum, Jupiter Tempel und die römischen Gebäudekomplexe können besichtigt werden. Unter dem Palastgelände erstrecken sich die "Podrumi" genannten verwinkelten Kellergänge, welche zum "Peristil", einem lichtdurchfluteten Säulenhof führen. Die vielen Sonnenstunden Dalmatiens genießen kann man auch entlang der Flaniermeile "Riva", unmittelbar am Hafen. Kunstinteressierte sollten die Mèstrovic-Galerie besuchen. Der weit über die Stadtgrenzen hinaus bekannte Künstler schuf auch die 8 Meter hohe Statue des Bischofs Gregor von Nin, welche man in der Innenstadt von Split bestaunen kann.

Charakteristisch für Dalmatien ist seine reiche Inselwelt. Die größte Insel Mitteldalmatiens ist Brac. Hier befindet sich mit dem 778 Meter hohen Vidova Gora auch die höchste Erhebung Dalmatiens. An ihrem Fuße erstrecken sich die Traumstrände des "Goldenen Horn". Postira an der Nordküste beeindruckt mit seiner malerischen Lage zwischen Weinbergen und Olivenhainen. Bol an der Südküste ist die älteste Stadt der Insel und umgeben von einem der schönsten Strände der Adria.

Eine Möglichkeit, die reiche Flora und Fauna Dalmatiens zu entdecken, sind die zahlreichen Nationalparks. Luchse, Adler, Dachse, Bären und Schakale haben hier einen natürlichen Lebensraum gefunden. Orangenbäume, Oleanderbüsche oder Agaven zeugen von der vielfältigen, mediterranen Vegetation.

Dubrovnik gilt als eine der schönsten Städte im gesamten Mittelmeerraum. Den historischen Stadtkern umgibt eine fast 2 Kilometer lange und bis 6 Meter breite Befestigungsanlage, welche komplett begehbar ist. Sie umschließt die Schätze einer 1500jährigen Geschichte. Hervorzuheben sind hierbei der Fürstenpalast, die Kathedrale oder die Rolandsäule, welche im Mittelalter die bürgerliche Freiheit der Städte symbolisierte. Um 1492 entstand in Dubrovnik das weltweit erste Arboretum. Über 400 Arten exotischer Pflanzen sind hier vereint. Eine besondere Attraktion bilden über 500 Jahre alte Platanen.

Bei Temperaturen um 30 Grad herrscht in Dalmatien, bei angenehmen 20 Grad Wassertemperatur, Badesaison von Juni bis Oktober. Die leichte Brise der Adria und die trockene Bergluft sorgen für ideale klimatische Bedingungen. Kulinarisch verwöhnen die Restaurants Dalmatiens mit Fisch, Fleischspießen, Oliven, Käse und Weinen der Region. Nachtschwärmern sei die Disko "Aurora" in Primosten empfohlen. Auf zwei Etagen ist Partylaune garantiert.
