I take the train home today... I'll be home for a few days before I head to Northern California for the SRHS running camp. I'm excited to see everyone, I think I'll stay for a night or two and then go further north to visit my Grandma. I can't wait to see her, and relax with her, and enjoy the life and the amazing air up there. Humboldt is the most relaxing place that I can think to easily escape to and I plan on staying up there as long as I can. I can hardly wait... I just want to get up there and read and play cards and go on hikes and make art and hang out with my Grandma!

So before I go, I have to post one more John Mayer thingy and then..... and then... drum roll... I'm stopping myself from blogging about him anymore. It's may last one, for the road. You've all heard about him for months, and I seriously have this freakish love of the guy and I'm starting to weird myself out. I can't help it these days and I need to recover from my addiction. Admitting it, apparently, is the first step towards recovery. My last hurrah is this video and then... no more.

Check out this amazing piece. I. AM. SPEECHLESS. HE'S AMAZING! I have overwhelming love for this boy. He's, he's just.... aaa...

His music makes my heart swell and my head happy, and my body responds with lightness of breath and of foot and of heart. His music makes me feel like I could swoon yet could run really, really quickly; like my heart is a heavy sponge dripping with Martinelli's sparkling apple juice; as if any ailment I have mends itself upon hearing his guitar; and as if I'm a little girl, frustrated at the depth of thoughts and lack of vocabulary to color them.

I melt like maple syrup over hot pancakes when he plays.

The End.

Kevin Hoover of The Arcata Eye has been getting a lot of flack lately for his views on indoor grows and how to address the problems associated with the grows in his town but, whatever your individual viewpoint about his actions, his hard hitting interview with Scott Burns, deputy director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, impresses with its clarity, intelligence and bulldogged insistence on important points. I reccommend getting a copy of The Eye to check out the Feds' vision for Humboldt County and for an excellent closeup of the kind of hard hitting questions a journalist should ask.

For those of us in the Southern part of the area with limited access to The Eye the recorded interview appears at KHSU.org on the archives' page--Friday, most recent.

Kevin starts out soft--and pro marijuana advocates might be inclined to dismiss the piece but increasingly, as the interview goes on, he insists on some answers to very pointed questions about the Federal government's stand on legalizing marijuana and the part the government plays in causing criminal activity by criminalizing what many people consider medicine or, at most, a gentle intoxicant.

Because my little guy needed me, I missed the last few minutes of the interview. But you can bet at 11pm when my IP allows free download, I'll be hitting the link above and visualizing a clear and ugly picture of how the current administration plans to handle this area in regards to marijuana growing.

Mendocino sheriff Tom Allman was right--if we don't solve our community's problems surrounding marijuana growing, we are going to end up with the feds "solving" it for us.

UPDATE:I don't know if I missed it earlier or if it just went up but now there is a transcription of the interview on The Eye's site.

A few quick notes here.

Budget:
I left a little early but looks like the budget will get passed. I may say even by Commissioner Higgins. Turns out the way the budget is done, a deficit is projected every year. The reasoning is to figure out a worst case situation. The picking which stuff to actually do.

Goldman Sachs:
Committee is charged only with trying to work out an agreement with Goldman Sachs, then bring that approval to the board for debate, public comment, and approval. That is only if an agreement can be reached. However that committee has serious problems with what Goldman Sachs has but on the table, and said it may never be approved.

Plan:
Commissioner Dennis Hunter said he despite, what people think he is going to do, is not satisfied with the business plan and listed quite a few problems he has with it.

The reasoning behind putting the multi-berth over at Samoa, with regards to Cruise ships is a) at Eureka directly, the security concerns, would prevent at the Marina would be isolated, and unable to get to open water while the cruise ship was docked, b) dock b would still require buses to get to downtown Eureka. So with Samoa, it has worked well in the past, could a) use the cruise ship's own or other small boats to ferry people to Eureka, b) bus them over, or c) take the tourist train around the bay.One commenter said the Cruise ship should dock directly to tourist areas. However Samoa has the Maritime Museum, Cookhouse, Timber Heritage Museum being worked on, and possibility a Fishing Museum.

Over at Archie's he reminisces about the five scariest scenes in children's movies. He mentions several really terrifying moments (the childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is bone chilling) but he didn't mention my most frightening scene--the one where Bambi's mom is killed.

I took this photo above just after the doe bounded across the road and her fawn was stuck on the far side with me separating them. This little one is so young he can't really conceive that he might be in danger. The doe on the other hand was quite concerned--like me, after seeing Bambi, she knows her worst fears can come true.

DAVID R. BAKER, Village Green/SFGate.com, July 23, 2008

Drilling for undersea oil along the east and west coasts has quickly turned into one of America's loudest political fights, as anyone reading the comments on SFGate can attest. But it's not the Bush administration's only plan for offshore energy.

For the past few years, the administration has been studying how to open the coasts to renewable energy projects, things like wave farms and underwater turbines designed to generate electricity by harnessing the tides. The Minerals Management Service -- the same federal agency that sells offshore oil leases -- has quietly pieced together a program to grant leases for testing renewable energy projects at sea.

On July 23, 2007, the service reported that it would move forward with the lease program, which will include two locations along the northern California coast.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co., California's largest utility, wants a lease to study wave power off of Humboldt and Mendocino counties. Oil giant Chevron proposed a similar study along Mendocino but later dropped the project. A smaller company, Marine Sciences of San Diego, is seeking a lease that would cover some of the same offshore areas as PG&E's Humboldt proposal.

The Minerals Management Service wants PG&E and Marine Sciences to collaborate on the project, rather than grant the two companies overlapping leases. Each lease will cover a specific patch of the ocean and will run for five years. Companies receiving the leases will be allowed to test equipment at sea -- equipment such as buoys that generate electricity as they bob up and down on the waves. But the companies will not be allowed to set up commercial operations there.

Before any leases are handed out, the service will continue studying potential environmental pitfalls. Some north coast residents worry that a cluster of power-generating bouys tethered to the seafloor could interfere with fishing or the migration of whales. The service would like to start handing out leases as early as this fall and may be able to do so with some sites on the east coast. But the California leases could easily take longer, said service spokesman John Romero.

"The hope is we can do these things sooner than later, but bottom line, we're not going to compromise the environmental review process," he said.

MMS News Release, July 23, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC – The Minerals Management Service (MMS) announ

MMS News Release, July 23, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Minerals Management Service (MMS) announced today that it is proceeding with the consultation and analyses necessary to move toward the issuance of limited leases under its interim policy for authorizing alternative energy data collection and technology testing activities on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS).

"This is another important step in the advancement in the OCS Alternative Energy Program," said MMS Director Randall Luthi. "I am excited about our progress and am looking forward to working with the states and communities to move forward with these proposed activities."

MMS announced its interim policy in November 2007 to jumpstart basic information gathering efforts relating to development of OCS alternative energy resources such as wind, waves, and ocean currents as authorized by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct). The limited leases envisioned under the interim policy will be for a term of five years and will not convey any right or priority for commercial development.

Following the initial announcement, MMS received more than 40 nominations of areas proposed for limited leasing off the west and east coasts. In April MMS identified a subset of 16 proposed lease areas for priority consideration and provided public notice of those areas for the purpose of determining competitive interest as required by EPAct and for receiving relevant environmental or other information. The comment period on the April notice closed on June 30. A brief description of the information received and MMS's decisions concerning the 16 proposed lease areas follows.

New Jersey, Delaware, and Georgia—the 10 lease areas (six off NJ, one off DE, and three off GA) proposed for site assessment activities relating to wind resources drew no competing nominations and no significant comment. MMS will proceed with a noncompetitive leasing process for these sites.

Florida—three of the four lease areas off the southeast coast proposed for site assessment or technology testing activities relating to ocean current resources received competing nominations, and comments concerning the areas were favorable. MMS will proceed with a noncompetitive leasing process for the one site that did not receive competing nominations. Due to timing constraints inherent in the interim policy, as well as bureau budget and staffing considerations, MMS has decided not to proceed with a competitive auction for the other areas. Instead, the competing nominators have been asked to collaborate in order to enable interested parties to jointly benefit in information gathering under leases issued noncompetitively.

California—neither of the two areas off Northern California (Humboldt and Mendocino Counties) proposed for site assessment and technology testing relating to wave resources drew new competing nominations. However, based on two original overlapping nominations in the Humboldt area from the initial Call for Nominations in Nov. 2007, MMS has determined that there is competitive interest in that proposed lease area. MMS also received numerous comments from local stakeholders concerned about potential use conflicts and environmental issues in both areas. For the Mendocino area, MMS has decided to proceed with a noncompetitive leasing process, working with the applicant and local stakeholders to refine the area and scope of proposed activities and to address other local concerns. For the Humboldt area, MMS has decided not to hold a competitive auction and to ask the competing nominators to collaborate. If they agree to collaborate, MMS will proceed with a noncompetitive leasing process as in the Mendocino area.

The process for issuing limited leases under the interim policy will entail thorough environmental analysis under the National Environmental Policy Act and related laws, as well as close consultation with federal, state, and local government agencies as required by EPAct.

The limited leases that will be issued under the interim policy will enable the lessees to collect information that will be useful for potential commercial projects in the future under an MMS regulatory program that is in development.

MMS published a proposed OCS alternative energy rulemaking on July 9, 2008. When final, this rule will govern all future commercial OCS alternative energy activities and will apply to any future commercial development in the areas leased under the interim policy. Limited leaseholders wishing to conduct commercial activities will need separate authorization under the final rule that is adopted.

The MMS interim policy is ongoing pending the adoption of a final rule governing OCS alternative energy activity. Interested parties may continue to submit nominations, and MMS may act on other nominations that already have been received or are received in the future.

I get to be the one to remove and ship their phone system. As long as GGP drops their need for techs needing five million dollar insurance. No one around here can afford five million dollar insurance. My boss says it would cost an additional thousand bucks a month. We don't do that amount at the mall in a year. Just not worth it. So if GPP persists, those repair jobs will go out of county.

Management says talks on for new store coming in
Article Launched: 07/22/2008 10:12:44 AM PDT

Inside the Bayshore Mall, Gap Kids sits empty save for some barren tables stacked against one wall. Next door, a few customers pick over the scant remaining merchandise in The Gap. A sign at the entrance reads, “This Gap location will be closing. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers.”

Come Sunday, it will be gone, the latest departure from the mall in recent years. Whether it's due to corporate troubles or the slowing of the national economy, no fewer than 17 of the mall's 101 storefronts are currently unoccupied.

Old Navy outlet, Wilson's Leather and KB Toys have all vanished in recent months, and weekend news reports suggest Mervyn's could be next.

The department chain may be forced to declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy and close 177 stores in seven states, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Mervyn's and J.C. Penney were considered “anchor stores” when the mall opened in 1987. J.C. Penney closed in 2000.

A spokesman for Mervyn's declined to comment on the news reports, nor would he speak to the future of the Bayshore Mall location.

Bayshore Mall Manager Sue Swanson said the departures of J.C. Penney, Wilson's, KB Toys and The Gap can be attributed to difficulties on the corporate level, adding that the economy has slowed nationwide.

”It's not Eureka; it's not Humboldt County,” she said. “It's the entire country.”

She pointed to Borders, Bed, Bath and Beyond and
Advertisement
Sears as examples of mall success stories.

”We've got a lot of bright points,” Swanson said.

Rumors have been circulating that The Movies, the mall movie theaters owned by Oregon-based Coming Attractions Theatres, may also be considering a departure. Ticket prices have been cut to $5 for evening shows and $3 for matinees.

”We're talking to the landlord right now,” said Coming Attractions President Daryn McLennan. He said The Movies has not been as busy as it was before the Broadway Theatre expanded from eight to 12 screens. But, he said, “We're going to continue to operate it for the foreseeable future.”

Allen Lesser started his personalizing business, U Name It, as a kiosk in the Bayshore Mall 17 years ago.

”It was great,” he said. “Sales were great for three or four years. Then it started declining.”

Foot traffic at the mall has risen and fallen over the years, he said, but recently it has been falling. Lesser is now in the process of moving his store from the mall to a new location in Henderson Center.

”My rent will be cheaper, and I won't have to do the hours,” he said. Stores in the mall are required to stay open during all regular mall hours, which total 73 per week. “For me, that's wasting money and employee hours,” Lesser said.

He stressed that he has great respect for the mall's office staff, and considered his own rent fair. But he said the mall's parent company, Chicago-based General Growth Properties, charges more rent for stores considered permanent.

”It's really high,” Lesser said. “That's why (stores) need to bail. The corporate stores are just folding.”

Swanson disagreed, saying other stores left mainly due to corporate level issues. She said the mall is “talking very aggressively” with an undisclosed company in southern California interested in the Gap location.

Other local shop owners see things brightening up at the mall.

”We're happy here,” said Baa Baa Sheepskins co-owner Angela Lyons. “We're disappointed that (the mall) is not as vibrant as in the past, but (management) is working pretty hard to get companies to come in.”

Lyons said she hopes that the pendulum will swing back soon.

”I think the mall is in transition now,” she said. “I'm trying to stay positive and hope customers come back -- at least by Christmas.”

Can Cannabis Compounds Slow The Progression Of Multiple Sclerosis?

ScienceDaily (July 21, 2008) — The CUPID (Cannabinoid Use in Progressive Inflammatory brain Disease) study at the Peninsula Medical School in Plymouth has reached an important milestone with the news that the full cohort of 493 people with multiple sclerosis (MS) has been recruited to the study.

CUPID is a clinical trial which will evaluate whether tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), one of many compounds found in the in the cannabis plant (and the main active ingredient) is able to slow the progression of MS.

This is an important study for people with MS because current treatments either target the immune system in the early stages of MS, or are aimed at easing specific symptoms such as muscle spasms or bladder problems. At present there is no treatment which slows progression of the disease.

The CUPID trial follows an earlier study -- Cannabinoids and Multiple Sclerosis (CAMS) -- which suggested a link between THC and the slowing of MS. The CAMS trial saw participants take THC for a year -- the CUPID trial will last for longer and aims to assess the effect of THC on progressive MS.

The CUPID trial is funded by the Medical Research Council, the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Multiple Sclerosis Trust.

Getting into the Spirit

Tao Ryce, Bassist for NPK

Most small towns are sleepy but ours are action packed. The Southern part of Humboldt has, according to the Redwood Times, a population of around 15,000 with its two "major metropolitan" areas reaching the grand total of about 2000 inhabitants each. Yet, this last month has included multiple lightning strikes, catastrophic fires, an invasion by 450 FBI agents, a visit by the King of Jordan and, of course, our ever present passionate discussions about how to deal with our modern day Prohibition and the environmental and economic fallout that results from marijuana's illegal status.

Our tiny little Art Deco movie theater kept the action up this last Thursday with a wonderful event. Local band, NPK opened the house to a passionate crowd of fans for the shooting of a new music video. Fans from babies to elders rocked and clapped to the beat while cameras rolled. The energy grew more passionate until finally many members of the crowd surged onto the stage and joined the band in singing, swaying and tambourine playing.

Outside, the full moon hovered high over the tiny streets. Other than the theater, lights came from only the grocery store and the gas stations. Only one stop sign interfered with the main road through town. Yet, cars still paused to allow pedestrians to cross where needed rather than where indicated by crosswalks. Small groups strolled through town laughing and chatting. People gathered on corners and leaned against buildings moving slowly and savoring the perfection of the weather.

Nearby, the Jordanian king dined in one of our best Inns surrounded by security guards and guns. I hope he and his wife had a chance to step outside alone and wander the quiet night in peace like we did for, like the crowd in the theater, many of the people of So. Hum are passionate souls ready to get into the spirit of the moment but most of them, like me, paused on their way home to enjoy the moon and clouds lighting quiet landscapes of trees and meadows.

How did we manage the best of both worlds here?

______________________

Okay, maybe the excitement hasn't all been exactly fun but at least it isn't boring here.

Dear KHSU Community,
Let me start by correcting the recent press release sent out by the university

Dear KHSU Community,

Let me start by correcting the recent press release sent out by the university characterizing me as departing KHSU to "pursue other endeavors." I did not leave to pursue other endeavors. I was forced to resign.

A week ago Monday at a regularly scheduled meeting with Rob Gunsalus, the vice-president of University Advancement, Mr. Gunsalus told me that he and I had "a different vision" for KHSU and that he would be seeking new management for the station. During that meeting and in a subsequent phone conversation he told me this had nothing to do with my job performance or any "job failure" on my part. In fact, he claimed I had done "good work for the station and the university." He also said that he had no "animosity” toward me. He said that my dismissal was about a "new leadership direction" for KHSU. He was not specific about what that meant. He was specific about wanting me to resign, rather than to be fired.

I'll spare you the details of our negotiations over the next week, which happened in large part while I was attempting to attend a family wedding in South Carolina. I will tell you that I was given very little time, that there are very few options for management employees in these circumstances and that I chose what I felt would be best for my husband and myself and our financial future - and that was to officially resign and take early retirement from HSU.

My last official day on the job is July 30th. As I leave I do so with serious concerns about the future of KHSU for the following reasons:

Last March a listener who was upset about the content aired during Democracy Now's broadcast of the "Winter Soldiers" testimonies in Silver Spring, Maryland contacted me and university president Rollin Richmond to protest. Mr. Gunsalus became active in the discussion and sided with the listener's position that KHSU was wrong to be airing what he felt were one-sided and "biased" perspectives on the war in Iraq. I did my best to explain to all involved that whether or not you agree with the programming, it is important in the interests of free speech and a free and democratic society to allow these perspectives to be heard. I said we would be happy to give the listener air time to react to the program and to share his opinions on Democracy Now or any other issue he wished to speak about.

Mr. Gunsalus became adamant about engaging me on the merits of carrying Democracy Now on KHSU. He claimed Democracy Now was "pedal to the metal" advocacy and had no place on a publicly-funded college radio station. He said he had listened to an episode of “Winter Soldiers” on Democracy Now and stated that it "made my blood boil." He said he and President Richmond were "this close" to pulling Democracy Now off the air.

Shortly after this exchange I sent a memo and series of station reports about Democracy Now to Mr. Gunsalus and President Richmond. The memo was, as I stated "an effort to help us all deal with and understand listener reactions to Democracy Now and what role it plays on KHSU." With the memo I included financial data from pledge drives since Democracy Now had been added to the program schedule, amounts of dollars pledged on each show pitched during the drive, statistics on audience research during 9-10 a.m. when Democracy Now airs, data from our streaming statistics and listener responses when asked "why do you support KHSU and what are some of your favorite programs?" I concluded by saying that based on the reports "I believe this program performs well for the station and university and has broad support throughout the community."

I did not receive a response from the president's office, but when Mr. Gunsalus and I discussed the reports later he said that even if listeners liked Democracy Now and supported it financially, it might be "the right thing for the university to do" to pull the show. When I asked what objective criteria he would use to make that decision, he said it would be done "subjectively.”

Similarly, I am concerned about the fates of Thursday Night Talk and Eco News. On several occasions over the last two years, I have had conversations with both Mr. Gunsalus and President Richmond about allegations that the programs are biased to the progressive left, advocacy in nature and inappropriate for a campus radio station. While at times I have agreed that the guests and perspectives on these shows come too often from one point of view and could be more journalistic in nature, and I have tried to work with the volunteer hosts and producers to achieve this, I have never questioned the value of the programs to our listeners or the dedication and hard work of the people who create them. I do not believe the university administration sees it the same way. Several months ago Mr. Gunsalus told me he wanted to replace the Thursday Night Talk hosts with someone who would do less "advocacy" and provide more "balance" to the show. I tried to persuade him that it would be better to add another talk show rather than to cancel a long-standing program already in place and he agreed - but he promised to "revisit" the issue of Thursday Night Talk soon.

Lastly, I am concerned about the station structurally and financially for the following reasons:

In April during meeting with Mr. Gunsalus, he insisted that I sign a document transferring $100,000 of KHSU reserve funds, which come from membership contributions and underwriting revenue, into an Advancement Foundation account under a quasi-endowment agreement. I was hesitant to sign over the funds because of KHSU's current budget situation (see below) and the rate at which the station has been forced to deficit spend to meet expenses. I was also hesitant because quasi-endowments, as defined by the Advancement Foundation are "funds that the institution's governing board may choose to treat as endowment, but the board is not subject to any legal prohibitions against spending the principal." While I am hopeful that the monies will be invested wisely and that interest earnings will benefit the station into the future, I worry about KHSU's access to the funds should they be needed. I also remain perplexed and uneasy about the insistence by Mr. Gunsalus that I transfer the funds.

Some of you may know that KHSU's state budget has been cut severely by the university this year ($25,000) and will continue to be cut by the same amount for at least the next four years. If this does happen, KHSU's state subsidy will be essentially eliminated, which could very well cripple the station operationally. And, as I have tried to explain many times, any reductions the station receives from the university or other sources negatively affects the annual Community Service Grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The lower the state subsidy from the university, the lower the annual CPB grant, which further impacts KHSU’s overall budget.

As of July 1, 2008 Mr. Gunsalus changed the way in which the station receives and processes donations from the community. Instead of going through KHSU which has historically been the case, gifts now go through a centralized campus "gift processing center.” I am concerned that this procedure will interfere with the station's ability to quickly know about and be responsive to our donors, a practice which the station has always handled well and been proud of. And just two weeks or so ago, University Advancement took KHSU's donor data base away from our Member Services office so that donor records no longer reside with radio station development personnel. These structural changes, while complicated to explain, have caused internal disruptions to KHSU's staffing, gift accounting, receipting and donor acknowledgment processes. In short, it's a mess.

I’m very sorry I will no longer be able to assist KHSU in an official capacity about these or any other issues of concern to the station. In my resignation email to Mr. Gunsalus I said the following:

"It has been a great privilege to work with the dedicated staff and volunteers at this beloved public radio station for the past six-plus years. As a team we have achieved enormous success on behalf of the university and the listening community we serve. I had wished to accomplish much more for the station, campus and community ... I am deeply saddened that cannot happen."

Please know that I will always remain committed to the mission of public radio. I will miss my work at the station and with all of you very much.

Elizabeth

"I was inspired by Obama back in January to get back into political action after 25 years of disappointment and discouragement about our political process. As a young person, I believed that we could change our world with traditional political involvement. I volunteered for McCarthy before I was old enough to vote. Linda Atkins has stepped forward to stand next November for Eureka City Council from the 2nd Ward. As you may have already heard, I'm standing for City Council from the 4th Ward. Linda and I share a deep commitment to stand up for Working Families and share bold ideas, a new vision, and a new direction for Eureka's future (see http://www.georgeclark.org). Many of you receiving this email may live outside of Eureka and may be wondering why a City Council candidate like myself is reaching out to the County's progressive community. If Linda Atkins and I win our respective races for City Council, we will join progressive Councilmember, the honorable Larry Glass and Eureka will have a progressive majority for the first time in over a century!

Eureka is the county seat and as such influences the rest of Humboldt County. Imagine what can be accomplished beginning next year when a progressive City Council takes the reins in Eureka. If you live in Eureka, you already know how important it is to set the city on a New Direction. Linda and I will be at two events together this coming week and I'm hoping you might be able to come to one or both.

First Community Action Meeting: Sunday, July 20th, 6pm at Clark Campaign HQ, 322 F Street in Old Town, Eureka. Linda and I will discuss the campaign, future plans, and we'll take questions.

Economic Policy Rollout: Thursday, July 24th, 6pm also at Clark Campaign HQ, I'll be concluding the first round of my "Going Local" Economic Listening Tour and will be presenting a bold New Direction for Eureka's Economic Future.

In Solidarity,
