Antoni Gaudi 1852 - 1926

Architect and designer, Antoni Gaudi is the most internationally prestigious figure in spanish architecture.
Born in Reus, in Catalonia, he graduated in Barcelona in 1878 and this city became the center of his activities. One important aspect is his capacity as designer.
This led him to create, in close collaboration with some of the very fine artisans of his time, all those elements making up architectural space - wrought iron, furniture, stained glass, sculptural work, mosaics, ceramics and so on - within an organic concept of decoration and with the integration of these elements into the construction process.
The sea landscape was one of his most preferred inspirations.

In his own time, Gaudi was both admired and criticised for the audacity and singularity of his innovative solutions. His fame on a world scale has become an unquestioned fact both in specialised circles and among the general public.

“Golbasto Momarem Evlame Gurdilo Shefin Mully Ully Gue, most mighty Emperor of Lilliput, delight and terror of the universe, whose dominions extend five thousand blustrugs (about twelve miles in circumference) to the extremities of the globe; monarch of all monarchs, taller than the sons of men; whose feet press down to the centre, and whose head strikes against the sun; at whose nod the princes of the earth shake their knees; pleasant as the spring, comfortable as the summer, fruitful as autumn, dreadful as winter: his most sublime majesty proposes to the man-mountain, lately arrived at our celestial dominions, the following articles, which, by a solemn oath, he shall be obliged to perform:-

“1st, The man-mountain shall not depart from our dominions, without our license under our great seal.

“2d, He shall not presume to come into our metropolis, without our express order; at which time, the inhabitants shall have two hours warning to keep within doors.

“3d, The said man-mountain shall confine his walks to our principal high roads, and not offer to walk, or lie down, in a meadow or field of corn.

“4th, As he walks the said roads, he shall take the utmost care not to trample upon the bodies of any of our loving subjects, their horses, or carriages, nor take any of our subjects into his hands without their own consent.

“5th, If an express requires extraordinary despatch, the man-mountain shall be obliged to carry, in his pocket, the messenger and horse a six days journey, once in every moon, and return the said messenger back (if so required) safe to our imperial presence.

“6th, He shall be our ally against our enemies in the island of Blefuscu, and do his utmost to destroy their fleet, which is now preparing to invade us.

“7th, That the said man-mountain shall, at his times of leisure, be aiding and assisting to our workmen, in helping to raise certain great stones, towards covering the wall of the principal park, and other our royal buildings.

“8th, That the said man-mountain shall, in two moons’ time, deliver in an exact survey of the circumference of our dominions, by a computation of his own paces round the coast.

“Lastly, That, upon his solemn oath to observe all the above articles, the said man-mountain shall have a daily allowance of meat and drink sufficient for the support of 1724 of our subjects, with free access to our royal person, and other marks of our favour. Given at our palace at Belfaborac, the twelfth day of the ninety-first moon of our reign.”

I swore and subscribed to these articles with great cheerfulness and content, although some of them were not so honourable as I could have wished; which proceeded wholly from the malice of Skyresh Bolgolam, the high-admiral: whereupon my chains were immediately unlocked, and I was at full liberty. The emperor himself, in person, did me the honour to be by at the whole ceremony. I made my acknowledgements by prostrating myself at his majesty’s feet: but he commanded me to rise; and after many gracious expressions, which, to avoid the censure of vanity, I shall not repeat, he added, “that he hoped I should prove a useful servant, and well deserve all the favours he had already conferred upon me, or might do for the future.”

Police have been forced to wear body cameras in an attempt to help fight against crime and give first-hand evidence of incidents in the Thames Valley area.

120 mini-camera kits have been purchased for the force which covers areas of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. Officers are now being trained on how to use the equipment which, it is hoped, will be a visual deterrent for anti-social and criminal behaviour.

Some officers in Banbury have already started to wear the cameras which are used by being mounted onto the uniform along with microphone, and PCSOs (Police Community Support Officers) are set to wear the cameras in the near future.

Artist's Comments

The Japanese Water Garden can be divided in three main time periods. In the Heian period (785-1184), the book Sakuteiki was written as a guide to future Japanese Buddhist water gardeners, describing the ideal paradise on earth. After the Heian period, the simplicity of Zen teachings, to represent nature instead of imitating nature became Japanese garden tendency and slowly cut away large uses of water. But with the revolutionary tea master Sen Rikkyu (1552-1591) the Japanese gardens reintroduced water for the Chado tea ceremony.

The Heian period marks the evolution of water gardens for not only the Japanese but also the world. No other culture, not even the Chinese or Romans had come to such systematic and ordinated rules and methods for water gardening than the aristocrats of this time in Japanese history. The writing of the Sakuteiki simply left a historical record of what the Japanese already knew and had been practicing for centuries. How, water should flow, in what direction, how rocks should be placed, where and why. These factors are still known and taken into account today, as the principles of paradise on earth.

With the demise of the Heian period, Japan fell into a cold, Zen criticism of the world, and this reflected in Japanese Gardening, as the usage of small rock gardens could potentially represent entire mountain ranges. The use of sand in place of water, and rocks instead of trees, or flowers in place of forests, became ways of simplifying meditation and interpretation.

However, with the birth of Chado, the Japanese tea ceremony, San Rikkyu transformed the garden into a path known as “roji” that would help remind the invited guest of the tea ceremony and of what the secret Buddhist teachings and principles behind tea really were, those of “wabi” or a humble state of mind and “sabi” the humble state of being (used in the layout of the garden). By using the tea ceremony as a way to cultivate spirituality both the similitude of Zen gardens and the paradise nature of Sakuteiki, these Japanese water gardens are the most important to Japanese culture. It is said that once upon building a tea house on the ocean front for a samurai lord, Rikkyu cut out the view of the ocean completely; the lord was most displeased, till he reached down to the water basin to wash his face, in which moment his eyes were filled with the image of the ocean and he understood his own connection with the ocean in that moment while purifying his body.

Later, other Japanese gardeners, produced imitations and remakes of legendary gardens from each of these styles, in no way really developing anything particularly revolutionary. The main tendencies in a Japanese water garden today will include certain distinct features that can only be found within these styles. The point, however, to any Japanese water garden is simplicity, clarity of mind and body, and enlightenment.

To achieve enlightenment, some things have been included in modern day Japanese water gardens. Yastu-hatchi eight fold narrow wooden bridges, remind the travelers of the roji, that the path and how we walk it, is far more important than the goal to be reached. Stones, sand and pedestal lanterns thrive as focal points that add the proper perspective whether it be mystical tradition, slow contemplation, or the passage of time. Moss is used in reference to enlightenment and can be found in metaphorical ways to describe poetic notions used in the traditional Japanese water garden.

Artist's Comments

Red-baiting is the act of accusing someone of being communist, socialist or, in a broader sense, of being significantly more leftist at their core than they may appear at the outset. The term is used mainly with the intention of discrediting the individual's political views as dishonest and/or haphazard. The implication in red-baiting is usually that the target represents an ill-intentioned external force which has no proper place in a given place.

"Those who are organizing the red-baiting and exclusionism don't actually want a more reasonable and tactful movement. They want a different movement--one that avoids taking up issues that might offend the liberal establishment and the Democratic Party.

This means avoiding the discussion of the nature of what is taking place in Iraq today--an imperialist war whose aim is conquest. The Iraqi people have every right to resist the occupation, just as every other colonized and occupied people have done throughout history.

The attempts to exclude the left of the antiwar movement today echo what took place in the early stages of the struggle against the Vietnam War. Liberal organizations that had collaborated with the anticommunist witch-hunts demanded that the Communist Party--and, indeed, any force even associated with radicalism--be excluded from antiwar activities."
Dying to believe in what you heard
I was staring straight into the shining sun

I knew the moment had arrived
For killing the past and coming back to life
I thought of you and the years and all the sadness fell away from me
And did you know...
I never thought that you'd lose the light in your eyes

Artist's Comments

The possibility that global warming will trigger abrupt climate change is something people might not want to think about.
But University of Arizona astronomer Roger Angel thinks about it. Angel, a University of Arizona Regents' Professor and one of the world's foremost minds in modern optics, directs the Steward Observatory Mirror Laboratory and the Center for Astronomical Adaptive Optics. He has won top honors for his many extraordinary conceptual ideas that have become practical engineering solutions for astronomy.
Angel is now publishing a first detailed, scholarly paper, "Feasibility of cooling the Earth with a cloud of small spacecraft near L1," in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The plan would be to launch a constellation of trillions of small free-flying spacecraft a million miles above Earth into an orbit aligned with the sun, called the L-1 orbit.
The spacecraft would form a long, cylindrical cloud with a diameter about half that of Earth, and about 10 times longer. About 10 percent of the sunlight passing through the 60,000-mile length of the cloud, pointing lengthwise between the Earth and the sun, would be diverted away from our planet. The effect would be to uniformly reduce sunlight by about 2 percent over the entire planet, enough to balance the heating of a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide in Earth's atmosphere.
The total mass of all the fliers making up the space sunshade structure would be 20 million tons. At $10,000 a pound, conventional chemical rocket launch is prohibitively expensive. Angel proposes using a cheaper way developed by Sandia National Laboratories for electromagnetic space launches, which could bring cost down to as little as $20 a pound.
The sunshade could be deployed by a total 20 electromagnetic launchers launching a stack of flyers every 5 minutes for 10 years. The electromagnetic launchers would ideally run on hydroelectric power, but even in the worst-case environmental scenario with coal-generated electricity, each ton of carbon used to make electricity would mitigate the effect of 1000 tons of atmospheric carbon.
Once propelled beyond Earth's atmosphere and gravity with electromagnetic launchers, the flyer stacks would be steered to L-1 orbit by solar-powered ion propulsion, a new method proven in space by the European Space Agency's SMART-1 moon orbiter and NASA's Deep Space 1 probe.
"The concept builds on existing technologies," Angel said. "It seems feasible that it could be developed and deployed in about 25 years at a cost of a few trillion dollars. With care, the solar shade should last about 50 years. So the average cost is about $100 billion a year, or about two-tenths of one percent of the global domestic product."
He added, "The sunshade is no substitute for developing renewable energy, the only permanent solution. A similar massive level of technological innovation and financial investment could ensure that.
"But if the planet gets into an abrupt climate crisis that can

How can I create more speed when surfing?

Using your arms to create speed at the take-off and after performing manoeuvres is an essential component at the elite levels of surfing. The throwing of the arms to create 'lift force' un-weights the surfboard, allowing it to accelerate faster than if the arms were not used.
Many surfers don't use their arms to help with acceleration. Their arms are used primarily for assisting in balance, with little movement to help create speed. Other surfers use only one arm, with the other arm working against the other to block the production of power.

What level are you?
- Grommet: Uses their arms primarily for balance. Rarely lifts the arms to help with creating speed in their surfing.
- Weekend Warrior: Uses their arms for balance also, but are only able to lift one arm to help with speed creation. Usually have a 'lazy' arm that doesn't contribute to speed production.
- Local hottie: Uses both arms to create speed at takeoff, but not always after performing a major manoeuvre. Sometimes bounces through flat sections instead of surfing through these sections, using the arms as the major force producer.
- Legend: Uses both arms at the appropriate times. Throws them forcefully when taking-off deep. Also uses them well when surfing through fat sections and after major manoeuvres where they need to create speed quickly.

In Roman Mythology, Janus was the god of gates, doors, beginnings, endings and doorways. The month of January was named for him. He was usually depicted as Janus Geminus (twin Janus) or Bifrons, with two heads looking in opposite directions.

Janus was the god of change and transitions such as the progression of past to future, of one condition to another, of one vision to another, and of one universe to another.

The gods endowed her with many talents; Aphrodite gave her beauty, Apollo music, Hermes persuasion, and so forth. Hence her name: Pandora, "all-gifted".

When Prometheus stole fire from heaven, Zeus took vengeance by presenting Pandora to Epimetheus, Prometheus' brother. With her, Pandora had a jar which she was not to open under any circumstance. Impelled by her natural curiosity, Pandora opened the jar, and all evil contained escaped and spread over the earth. She hastened to close the lid, but the whole contents of the jar had escaped, except for one thing which lay at the bottom, and that was Hope.

Artist's Comments

In some works of literature and even in life, a character who appears briefly, or does not appear at all, is of significant presence. An example of this can be found in the play Waiting for Godot, by Samuel Beckett.

The play deals with a hope for a change and a chance to be saved of two old frineds. One of the character is Godot, someone who never shows up. The reader finds out about him only through the conversations in the play. Although Godot is never physically present on stage, his presence is everywhere. The whole play, including all the actions and the theme itself, is affected by the mention of Godot.

No one in the play ever really saw him, or ever will. His appearance is not as important as a belief in him. The two friends, Estragon and Vladimir spend their lives waiting for this one person to show up, this one miracle to happen. It never does, but as Vladimir says, "It passes the time." It might appear surprising that the lives of two people can be based on the life of a third one, whom they never actually met. But in reality, they do not need him as a person. All they need is something to believe in, something to wait for.

Most people spend their lives witing for something, but they are not sure of what exactly. Vladimir and Estragon can consider themselves lucky. They know specifically what, or rather whom, they are waiting for : Godot. This faceless character affects their lives. He is a reason they are still alive. Every day, Estragon wants to kill himelf, but not only is there not enough rope, but there is also a hope that maybe, just maybe, Godot will appear the next day and everything will be different. Interestingly enough, Godot is also the one who keeps two friends coming back to the same spot, instead of wandering off and looking for a better place to live. Because of the endless promise that this one person will actually come, they do not leave the place.

Whether or not Godot exists does not make any difference. The belief in him keeps two people from killing themselves, yet living in a ditch. It keeps them away from the places where they want to go and at the same time, it keeps them together. This belief serves the most important function: it gives prupose to their lives.

Estragon and Vladimir are homeless, old and weary, and maybe they are right in thinking that they'd be better off being dead. Certainly Godot can be looked at as death itself, and that's what the two friends are waiting for. Still, death is considered to be a change and that's what Vladimir and Estragon want. And Godot, no matter what/who he is, is the one who can give them this change that they so desparately need.

He doesn’t mind if people take things from the Land of Broken Dreams. He’s even trying to give his kitten away.
"Everything has its day in the sun," he says. "But everything in the universe ends up junk."

Living in a house of broken dreams,
Where shadows throw shadows on the wall,
And memories are mountains to climb
Knowing everyone can fall.

And here where the cobwebs count the hours.
Since we let the laughter clear the air,
Painfully trying to touch
Knowing that we used to care.

He’s the Birdman of Exit 38. For fifty years, he built the Land of Broken Dreams, his backyard palace made of junk. "Everything here is supposed to be broke," he says. "Or else it wouldn’t be here. Everybody has stuff to throw away."
A trail leads from his house at the end of Duerr Street just next to Interstate 90 in Liverpool, out into the woods to the Land of Broken Dreams, a little shanty village with some structures two stories tall. He built a tiny church and an artist's studio and plenty of brightly colored houses where birds and rabbits used to live. Paintings, clocks, and long-forgotten toys fill each one. Something hangs from every tree and wall — mannequins, signs, broken statues, and suitcases. Each piece has its place.

That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line
Of the edge and where I walk alone

On Earth in 2100, some are reaching for the stars . . . but others struggle just to survive. Much of the home world remains mired in war and intrigue, as powerful corporations and high-tech armies fight over resources, markets, and ideas. Cities on the edge of chaos are battlegrounds for covert operations and high-stakes diplomacy, and the developing nations see themselves falling farther and farther behind.
Nations trapped in poverty, environmental disaster areas, and hellholes run by insane dictators . . . high-tech terrorism, rebellion, and crime, and rules for creating biological and chemical weapons . . . dangerous genetic designs, obsolete cybertechnology, and police state software . . . all part of daily life in Broken Dreams.

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating

The Magic in the tea with a lemon slice.

In the past whether you took "afternoon tea" or "high tea" was a peek into your social standing. Afternoon Tea was a light elegant meal served between a light lunch and late dinner, usually between 3 o'clock and 5 o'clock, and was mainly confined to the aristocracy with their leisurely lifestyle. High Tea was a more substantial meal, including meat and/or fish, and was really a early dinner which well suited the middle and lower classes after a long day at work.

Served from a teapot, the brewing of the tea is very important. First, rinse your teapot with warm water. Next, bring a kettle of water to boil and pour it over the tea leaves, letting it steep for three to five minutes. If using loose tea the rule is one heaping teaspoon of tea for each cup of water, plus one teaspoon "for the pot".

At one time it was customary to first pour a little milk into the teacup. It was thought that the fine porcelain cup may crack if the hot tea was poured directly into the empty cup. Sugar was then offered in cube form, with tongs, or else granulated. Normally the host or hostess pours the tea and serves the food. Guests can either be seated around a table or else in armchairs with an end table nearby for them to place their cup and saucer, teaspoon, plate, napkin, knife and fork.

There is a wonderful assortment of fine teas available today. The three main types are: Black, Oolong or Red, and Green Tea. Assam, Ceylon, China Caravan, Darjeeling, Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Irish Breakfast, Keemun, Kenya, Lapsang Souchong, Nilgiri, Orange Pekoe, Rose Pouchong, Russian, and Yunnan are Black Teas. Formosa/China Oolong and Formosa/China Pouchong are Oolong or Red Teas, and Gunpowder and Jasmine are Green Teas. Tea is sold either in tea bags or loose tea leaves. At one time loose tea with its large leaves had a superior flavor as tea bags were made with broken tea leaves and siftings that produced a stronger darker tea. The introduction of fine quality tea bags has changed that and now the choice between loose tea leaves or tea bags is based more on personal preference.

"Tea is much more than a mere drink in Britain. It is a solace, a mystique, an art, a way of life, almost a religion. It is more deeply traditional than the roast beef of old England....This khaki-colored concoction, brewed through an accident of history from an exotic plant grown thousands of miles from fog, cricket and left-handed driving, has become the life-blood of the nation."

Artist's Comments

Morpheus the Greek God of dreams was the greatest of the children of Hypnos the God of sleep and the Grace known as Aglia or Brightness.

While his father was the god of sleep, dreams were left to Morpheus and his siblings. Dad it seems was not the most active of deities, spending most of his time in a cave by the river Oblivion with his brother Thanatos, the God of Death, lying on a black couch surrounded by black curtains and black bird plumbs he slept a lot.

This is perhaps a remarkable insight by the ancient Greeks, as it was not until recently that discoveries in brain research showed us that the deepest levels of dreamless sleep and death are closer than we would probably like to think.

Whatever the case, according to Ovid, Hypnos fell for one of the Graces and asked his mother Nyx to help him hook up with the celestial sweet young thing. You know, I wonder why Thanatos never got hitched? I thought some women were into that whole dark "brooding" thing. But i digress....

For services rendered the two were wed and from that union came the Oneiros (dreams) unnamed black winged children who handle the dreams of lesser folk like you and me, and the three named brother of real power. Morpheus, who was able to take the form of any human, Icelus or Phobetor who could take the form of any animal and Phantasus, who could take the form of any inanimate object.
