Leute, lest Gedichte! Weniges kann so schrecklich schön sein.

La Veta, CO got some beautiful buttes and "hogbacks". Sad story about the pine trees here. They are invaded by pine beetles and when we see brown trees (which we saw alot of), the trees are beyond saving and will die. The pine beetle pro, blem seems to be spreading. On our way to Lamar we visited Cripple Creek, CO. It was July 4 and half the town shut down for their Summer Festival. Beautifully carved sand sculptures were everywhere and there was a chainsaw wood carving competition as well. Food vendors lined Main Street. What surprised me the most: casinos – all along the main thoroughfare and they have a Starbucks store in one of the them! I was gleefully happy! We missed a turn along the way and visited Monarch Pass Continental Divide at 11,312 ft elevation. Our truck had a hard time climbing these roads-the engine was getting hot really fast. Although it was a 2 hour detour, it was worth it. Our friend’s ranch in Lamar was surrounded with wildlife. Swallows made a nest above the porch light and were constantly flying in and out of the nest feeding their young. Deers were abound when sunset and we hear the coyotes ever so often at night. Our opportunity to fly came on the 2nd morning. We took off at 6am. The ground were littered with big holes and we thought they were prairie dog holes and they were but the critters share them with owls! Interesting! While flying low, I saw owls swopping in and stand on top of the holes . They were beautiful! We also went arrowhead hunting but unfortunately, found none. After leaving Lamar, we drove through KS and stayed a night with our MO friends and flew with them in the evening ffrom a private airport. There is a place in Hermann MO that our friends knew and flew before and gave us the contact person. We spoke to him and stopped there the following day for our next flight. He is also a PPGer but also flies all kinds of aircraft. That evening we flew from the Hermann airport which is next to the MO River and there were great big bluffs close to the site. We had to fly towards them. It’s a beautiful place

It was a wonder to see how some places in IA and MO still show evidence of the floods with some small roads still under water while it’s really dry and hot in CO where they were hoping to get some rain. It was 109 deg in Lamar. Surprisingly, we were not too crimped by gas prices – they ranged between $3.74-4.30/gal. We thought we’d gotten the best price and inadvertently we’d see yet cheaper price at the next couple of exits

Markus Krueger from digital-park.de was toying with the idea of understanding what happened in front of Hermann's eyes that day, when he came up with the project to take panoramic pictures inside the monument. But his project did not end there: he decided to literally...square the circle, by creating a tri-dimensional environment, mapping the panoramic images on the six sides of a cube of 5 x 5 x 6 meters.

I’ve been on a late summer tour of wineries in Midwest Wine Country and I love it! Each winery has a story and I’ve found by showing interest and asking a few questions, I can catch the spirit of each winery.

Last week’s wine tours were exceptional. Editor Kent Darr and I toured the 160 year old, hand-dug stone wine cellars at Stone Hill Winery. We heard the story of the “meant-to-be” circumstances that resurrected the winery now called Oak Glenn. Kent saw the old Norton grape vines planted by grape pioneer George Husmann, and now tended by Glenn and Carolyn – and Kent's wife Sue and I heard how the vines were re-discovered and produced grapes to make many jars of delicious grape jelly the first year. Now of course, they are used to produce that wonderful Norton wine. When you visit Stone Hill Winery or Oak Glenn Winery in Hermann, Missouri, sample the wine and ask to hear the rest of the stories.

We met wonderful people – and heard pride in the voices of the winemakers – and talked to vineyard managers, determined to grow the best possible grapes.

Off the beaten path, we rubbed the shiny nose on Daniel Boone’s monument. Do you know the story? Daniel Boone died and was buried in Missouri, and 25 years later, at the request of the Kentucky Legislature, his body was moved back to and buried in Kentucky.

During the trip we crossed the Katy Trail so many times – the scenery is beautiful, and if you enjoy biking or hiking, you'll want to give it a try.

Make Mine Wine will be carrying many of the stories about the people and places that we visit – and you’ll be seeing more information on our Web site soon to help you explore Midwest Wine Country. Tomorrow we are off on another trip to gather more information on Central Iowa Wineries for our upcoming issue. If you haven’t subscribed, do it today, so you don’t miss a single tale!

Cheers!

Berry, berry good pie!
There are few things in this world that bring me more joy than homemade pie.

Berry, berry good pie!

There are few things in this world that bring me more joy than homemade pie. I remember my grandmother in Paducah, Kentucky making fried apple pies in a cast iron skillet in her kitchen. She had a clear view out her kitchen window into the back yard where the apples had grown, as well as the blackberries, green beans and other fruits and veggies were still ripening.

On Saturday, I took a motorcycle ride out to Hermann, Missouri from my home in St. Louis. It was an easy ride; Manchester Road is Highway 100, and that is the very road that passes through downtown Hermann. All you have to do is take Highway 100 through Gray's Summit, past across I-44 and back again, through Washington (which is a town worth seeing) and out to Hermann. It's about 100 miles round trip, and perfect for an afternoon of cruising.

Hermann is a German-settled river town with a rich history of community and agriculture. By happenstance, we took a turn down 4th street and ended up at the corner of Schiller. My honey found a shop called "Time for Pie," and after the hour long ride there, it was indeed time for a slice of pie. Available in an old fashioned cupboard with clear glass domes were the daily selections: blackberry, strawberry rhubarb and mixed berry. My two friends and I ordered a slice of each, a la mode for $1 extra. The pie itself was fantastic...as they say on their site:

"All the pies at Time for Pie are made individually by hand, from scratch in our kitchen and served fresh in our shop."

You can really taste the homemade yumminess in the crust; it was a taste I hadn't enjoyed since my mother discovered the ease of ready-made crust at the grocery freezer. Sure, they are a time saver, but nothing can beat a homemade crust.

Flavors available (prepare to drool) include: mom's apple, apple/cranberry, cherry, cherry/cranberry, mixed berry (blackberry, raspberry, blueberry and strawberry), blackberry, peaches & cream, peach mango, pumpkin and strawberry-rhubarb. Their premium pies are a bit more expensive, and include pecan, chocolate-coconut, chocolate-cream and coconut cream. They also offer a full coffee bar, tasty scones and a variety of oversized muffins.

This shop opened in 2007, and is well worth the drive to Hermann. It is surrounded by antique stores, book shops and historic buildings. Hermann is a great excuse to take a one-tank-of-gas near St. Louis without having to spend a fortune for a getaway.

Time for Pie is at 4th and Schiller in Hermann, MO. I give it two very sticky, blackberry covered thumbs up! You can e-mail them at pie@time4pie.com or visit their site, time4pie.com, to check their list of upcoming events.

I had the pleasure of studying this move for quite sometime. Unfortunately as I was browsing online

I had the pleasure of studying this move for quite sometime. Unfortunately as I was browsing online forums, I saw alot of users putting false information on the move. This might be due learning from improper sources (say, youtube videos ), or talking from no real experience behind them, or for any other reason. Anyway, I hope this blog entry clarifies some issues. Do keep in mind that I didn't make up any of the misconceptions here, every misconception here was taken from online magic boards.

Now, I'm obviously in no way an authority on the move or something like that, but I do think I studied the move enough to give an educated, well written info on it. I look forward to discuss the following with anyone intrested.

Misconception 1: The Pass can be replaced with other sleights like the side steal.
Correction: No it cannot, as the pass is an invisible cut which is a totally different action that a single card steal ( side steals for example )

Misconception 2: The Pass is the best control.
Correction: Not true.

Its an established rule that there is no control better than other, it all depending on the trick you are performing, the construction of that particular trick. What the performer has to do is picking the control that fit the trick and make it "flow".

To illustrate, 4 aces on top of the deck, and a break above the selection. How can you bring the selection on top of the aces? Side steal is better than the pass for this.

4 aces in middle of the deck, you have a break above them. How can you bring them to the top? The pass is the best option for this.

In many effects it doesn't matter what the control you are using. In many cases I do the pass and follow it by a jog shuffle, this is just to practice doing the pass before a live audiance, like when you classic force every time you have a card selected.

Misconception 3: There is no need to perfect the pass, it can be done with misdirection.
Correction: Read below.
A good pass is a beautiful thing to see and a joy to watch. In Many effects that uses it, you just have to do it without misdirection. Example? New Cavorting Aces ( Kaufman's DVD ), you color change with the darn thing.

Also, many magicians prefer to master the sleights they love and get them down cold, this includes doing the pass with no misdirection needed.

What some people don't get is that simply saying "with misdirection", they need to come up with natural misdirection that is so good that ALL spectators would take their eyes of the deck, you cannot accept that a single spectator is looking down on the deck because then she/he will see the pass. This remind us of the top change.

A top change is much simpler to do than the pass with misdirection, because you are holding the card in one hand, and deck in another, they both come on the deck in a split second, plus its easy to put in a natural action. In the pass, BOTH hands come to the deck and HOLD it, making it more tricky than mere top change. Simply executing the pass invisibly will make your life way easier, and make everything flow better.

If you find a top change that can be done without the need for misdirection, would you use it? ( there is such thing, Harry Lorayne's Ultra move, or Max Milton's One Handed top Change, whatever you want to call it! ).

Keep in mind that you still need to get the trick to flow. You don't want to FOCUS all the attention on the deck, something like "as you can see the card is somewhere in the deck" and do the pass. The idea is "so your card is lost" as you look to their eyes, and do the pass. If someone is looking down, everything still looks good.

Misconception 4: For me, the Pass is just a showoff move at magic conventions.
Correction: Depending on the one using it. Why do you care if others use it for show off? Is just because the pass can be "showed off", you dismiss it? I honestly don't know how people arrive at such conclusions.

Misconception 5: There are no effects that are "pass-Dependant".
Correction: Wrong. Many effects can only be done with the pass. Look into Kaufman's DVD, all the effects need the pass as a cut. Roy Wolten and Jim Swain have alot of work on the subject as well. In fact, here is a list of the effects and principles I know of, where the pass is either cannot be replaced, or it is the most efficient solution.

- Euroaces ( spectator cuts and turns the aces ), Simply Harkey by David Harkey.
- Roy Wolten Passing at Red ( 3 free selections are odd colored among a packet of cards ), its on Royal Road to Card Magic DVD set by L&L, and on a Genii magazine issue.
- Cavorting Aces in Stars of Magic.
- All effects in Richard Kaufman's DVD On the pass ( especially the excellent version of Everywhere Nowhere )
- Richard Kaufman's CardWorks book, 3 effects that the pass is the way to achive the effect with the most magical appeal, 2 other effects where the pass will improve the routine to make it "flow".
- Any book by Jim Swain.
- Suppose you have a break above 3 cards, how can you control them to the top? The pass is the single most direct option.
- Open Index principle ( memorized deck work ), the pass is most direct way to control the named card, a side steal can be used, but the pass is easier to get into since you are already fiddling with the deck too much, let alone the fact that a pass doesn't affect the order of the deck as a side steal.
- Other items by Peter Duffie ( a deck turns into something like a prediction ) and Roy Wolten ( a trick called Autograph Hunter uses 3 passes to achive a very direct magical effect with appearantly no moves ).
- A VERY visual color change ( Ken Krenzel's pass video, watching the pass is like watching a camera trick ).
- A very good control. - 'Regal Aces' by Darwin Ortiz which uses about 4 cover passes
- Last but not least, the original application, to restore a cut.

Misconception 6: The pass is just a "magical masturbation"
Correction: I'm assuming that the one who said this meant that many enjoy practicing it, but never do it.
the pass is a nice thing to do in the hands making it something very fun practicing it. No one can see anything wrong with that.

The concepts of the pass are extremely interesting to some magicians, so they study it. Some are interested with false deals, so they study their concepts too. Many others are intrested in the S.W.E shift, so they study it. No one can argue that this is a wrong thing to do. The cardman is intrested in something, he works on it.

Should we work on something knowing that we will never perform it? Of course, but only after we developed a solid base of sleights and routines, a good understanding of basic theory and a decent performing ability, to be able to perform well obviously. At any rate, some things you study only for "acadimic reasons" will serve you wel later onl one way or another.

Misconception 7: The Pass take years to practice.
Correction: It can take years to do well ( for me its 3 years, I'm no way near an expert either ), but a mentor will decrease the learning curve quite a bit. Anyway, don't even think of it. Just practice, and time will fly by way faster than you think. For me, its like I learned the pass yesterday!

Misconception 8: An Invisible Pass doens't exist, unless done with misdirection.
Correction: This is the kind of un-intellegent thinking that the likes of Vernon and Erdnase avoided. Erdnase clearly states that an invisible shift in terms on a card game is "yet to be invented", he didn't say that it can't be done, yet showing that Erdnase is indeed someone who knows what he's talking about.

The same can be applied to magic.

Many people base this opinion on their own experience with magicians. You can't say something as a fact based on that. I will even say that today, invisible passes are excuted. I saw a clip of Steve Forte doing what seems to me the Luis Zingone Pass ( spelling ) of Expert Card Technique, which looks like taking a tabled deck that has just been cut then dealing. Peter Duffie does an extremely good Riffle Pass, Steve youell does his Mongrel and Rotation passes in an invisible fashion. Bill Klush is said to have an extremely good pass, a claim supported by someone who saw him demonstrating it ( I didn't say "saw him doing it", because he didn't see anything! ). Richard Kaufman's Half a Jiggle is facinating. Akira Fuji does excellent classic and cover passes as well. Ken Krenzel's pass looks like trick photography in his VHS.

These are the living masters, don't forget Vernon, Charlie Miller, Marlo, Gary Ouellet, Larry Jennings, Ross Bertram, Bruce Cervon and many others.

-------------------------------------------------

With that all said, I enjoyed ( and still enjoy ) practicing the pass and performing it. Indeed, an action such as of transposing the packets is a very large one, and cardmen succeeded in working out many covers and methods for it. Thats one thing we can be credited for!

One intresting thing that the pass is no longer the "backbone of card conjuring", as many of today's performers don't apply it to their magic ( e.g. Harry Lorayne, Daryl ). Indeed, a sign that our art is evolving.

We had the joy of spending Sunday out at Lee & Ingrid Abraham's farm in Berger, MO! What an amazing day!!!! It was very hard for me to leave after a wonderful brunch and afternoon walking the farm. I have fallen in love with their daughter Leena...I only hope someday our kid is as cool as she. She made us laugh with her prom night story....and she loves Feist just as much as I do and even went to the show in StL last week. Coolest kid around....she even ate the cheese rind....most teenagers wouldn't have even put the strange cheese in their mouth....not Leena...she's awesome.

Simon says our visit got me "farmcited!" (farm+excited). And yes....I am beginning to long for our own little plot of land and to leave the city behind. I would be happy just to move in with Lee & Ingird. I just need to finish grad school first...well, maybe I don't...I might be able to finagle a way to do it from a farm....ah....a girl can dream...

Anyway....Berger Bluff Farm is in need of a summer intern(s). See below for details:

We are looking for one or two apprentices for the 2008 growing season. Work will include all facets of vegetable farming: propagation, transplanting, cultivation, irrigation, harvest, packout, and delivery. We market our produce in St. Louis at a farmers' market and restaurants. Our prime consideration is that we find a person or persons who have a passion for gardening/farming-and are willing to work hard, listen to instruction, and apply the information. The intern must enjoy working around others and be flexible to the needs of the farm. Housing is provided in a one-bedroom, restored log house with kitchen and bathroom facilities. We offer a monthly stipend and produce during the season. Please contact us if you are interested.

If you are not familiar with Berger Bluff Farm, I am so sorry! You are missing out! You can find them at the Green Market in the CWE....you will NOT be disappointed with their bounty! Please check them out once the Green Market opens this season. I was introduced to them when I began dating Simon...all those years ago! Sidenote: Lee and Ingrid were the very first people I was introduced to as Simon's girlfriend!!! AWWWW.

Teilweise wirklich sehr interessante Menschen.

The inaugural Tour of Missouri in 2007 generated 26.2 million [US] dollars of economic activity over its six days as announced at a press conference held Wednesday morning. Building upon last year's success, the 2008 event, to be held from September 8 to 14, will grow by one day and stage and keep its spot on the calendar - this year between the Olympic Games in Beijing, China, and the World Championships in Italy.

"It was a great opportunity to showcase our state and what we call the 'Show me' state has to offer," said Governor Matt Blunt after announcing the results of an economic study conducted by the University of Missouri in Columbia.

"The Tour started with a simple idea," said Governor Blunt from Jefferson City about the origins of the event. "I had a friend who was an avid cyclist and had seen the Tour of Georgia. Almost 18 months of work paid off when we were awarded status of a sanctioned event." The Governor was excited to have the reigning Tour de France champion Alberto Contador (then of Team Discovery) at the Tour of Missouri last September.

He also estimated that more than 360,000 spectators watched the event and spent 21 million dollars locally in restaurants, shops and other businesses. He emphasized the importance of the world-wide exposure gained by the state.

"What you have is a whole bunch of people around the world who may never have heard of Missouri now do know," said Blunt who said viewers in 73 countries watched the streaming live video and 22 million people watched coverage on television. "It was thanks to the largest sporting event ever held in Missouri, which was free to the visiting public."

Joking about one of the advantages of this year's longer event enabling the race to visit more towns, Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder said, "A few less towns will be angry at me this year."

New host cities on the 2008 itinerary include Rolla, Saint James, Hermann and St. Joseph. In total, the 2008 Tour will feature five road races, one individual time trial and one circuit race. The hilliest stages are expected to be stage four from Lebanon to Rolla and stage six from Hermann to Saint Charles.

Both last year's winner George Hincapie and his then team-mate Levi Leipheimer are committed to racing the 2008 edition. Organizers are currently negotiating with various ProTour teams and will announce details of the more than 600 mile (966 kilometers) route in June.

08th Stage 1: St. Joseph to Kansas City (road race) 09th Stage 2: Clinton to Springfield (road race) 10th Stage 3: Branson (individual time trial) 11th Stage 4: Lebanon to Rolla (road race) 12th Stage 5: Saint James to Jefferson City (road race) 13th Stage 6: Hermann to Saint Charles (road race) 14th Stage 7: Saint Louis (circuit race)
