This is a blog that I have created to explain a bit more about myself and my experience with photography.  Those clients interested in getting their headshots taken by me should find these articles as a good resource to learn a bit more about my process and my overall character in general.  I hope to write several articles over the next few months which should satisfy the sceptical first time clients, keep the regulars up to date, and even provide some helpful information to photographers that want to investigate headshot and portrait photography in general. So sorry that we haven't been posting as regular as we usually do, but we have been super busy!

KLIC has been photographing weddings on the weekends, and family portraits as well as Real Estate headshots throughout the week. On top of all that, we've been doing some small renovations around the studio! Things are looking great around here, lots of new paint colours and photographs on the walls and we are hoping to get even more projects underway.

The $50.00 Special for the month of July has been advertised on Giant FM (91.7fm if you're in the Niagara Region), but for those of you who haven't heard it yet, we are doing a Graduate special. For only $50.00 you will recieve a studio sitting, and unlimited proofs.

I took some headshotsfor C during our trip to Florida in May and thought this image would look especially stunning with a little post-processing twist-o-rama.   Yeow--it DOES!  :)

I love the softness of this image and her gaze right through the lens.  Oh...and her eye color.  Gorgeous!

Back to the studio late in the day for my headshot session, and I was looking forward to catching my breath afterward.  But some things are not meant to be!  Just as the session ended I got a call from a client who was in desperate need of some Polaroid style shots for their agency.  Pronto! pronto!!

So yesterday didn’t end until late, but at least everyone went home happy! 

Today began with a quick headshot session, followed by a meeting with a new model who wants to do a portfolio shoot.  Beautiful girl – lots of potential!  I'm looking forward to helping her put her portfolio together.

After a cup of coffee we’re off to a day of meetings to go over plans for our upcoming shoot in California.  Never a dull moment!

My good friend Jordan of Green Flamingo Photography and I realized how silly we were to not make use of one another. So one weekend, she tagged along with me to shoot 2 weddings in 3 days in Tallahassee. We had so much fun...I'm sure it must be illegal, the amount of fun we had. Mmmhmm. Illegal. So, she just recently launched her first website, and I was working on mine (launching in August!), and we both needed some ::work:: done...so we did a headshot swap....and had even MORE fun.

True Stories:

1. Jordan and I have an anthem. It's called "love in this club" by Usher. We are currently studying up on the YouTube music video so we can perform the dance for friends and family. We might even call in some backup and contact Scott and AJ from my May weddings:)

2. Jordan has the most gorgeous green eyes you or I have ever seen. You know how people always comment on gorgeous blue eyes or gorgeous brown eyes...well she has gorgeous green eyes. Be Jealous!

3. We are for sure going to work together a TON in the future...and we're trying to work it out to go and see David Jay in Orlando this fall....just one of the many photographers that we mercilessly stalk. Daily.

Now we’ve all seen the bad head shots on the real estate or business billboards on the side of the road. I am amazed at the photos some professionals use to sell themselves… most times it seems like choosing not to use a photo would be better than the photos some people select.  Some of these shots are either old, outdated, or not taken by a professional, and well... it looks that way and tells us as clients a lot about the person (not necessarily good).

It has been over 2 weeks since I completed that photography workshop. I am not sure if it's sheer laziness or just lack of focus that is causing me to struggle selecting photos and subjecting them to post processing. And add to that fact that once I chose something and then be done doing my Photoshop magic, I have this strong urge to click that [X] on the top right and then be faced with that box that says "Save changes to jpg before closing"... I have been clicking 'No' like there's no more tomorrow for weeks now.

You see, I have this insatiable desire to be better with photography and yet I feel dissatisfied. It was the same feeling I had when we were tasked to pick 30 best photos on the said workshop. I even have to consult JZ what to pick to present to DB and the class.

*Sigh*

Am I just simply struggling or already merely doubting my capability? I wish for the former at least.

However, after doing a photo walk with JZ last night, touting our heavy cameras and a tripod with us, I loudly told him "I don't see anything." Frustrated one more time, I put my camera back in my bag and then sulked a little bit going back to the car. In spite of that gloomy mood, he said to me, “I bet there will be great pictures there.” I just gave him a guffaw. He knew what that meant. Inside me, there are confusing thoughts “This guy believes in me and yet I know I am not doing well...” I put my gear bag back into the closet, not even bothering to check the photos that we just took.

This morning as I opened my iGoogle, this quote from Paolo Coelho came up:

“…There is suffering in life, and there are defeats. No one can avoid them. But it's better to lose some of the battles in the struggles for your dreams than to be defeated without ever knowing what you're fighting for.”

I acknowledge the struggle but I will not concede to defeat. With that, I attached my hard drive again and skimmed through the thousands of thumbnails. I still cannot find myself doing that assignment that I supposed to have done long time ago, that is, picking the best 30. My mouse wandered far away from the SWB workshop folders and landed on one that is marked ‘You.’ My eyes settled on one image. It looked back at me with those dancing eyes.

And just like that, it hit me hard. Maybe he is right, it isn’t too much of a struggle with photography (or maybe it still is). But now I know that I am just one distracted, newlywed who is still so giddy with this change in my life. I can challenge myself some other time as I know what (or who) matters to me more.
