For a little while longer RIBA will be showing a selection of designs from the HAPTIC exhibition which originated from the ever-fertile mind of Kenya Hara, Chief Executive Designer, Nippon Design Centre Inc. and MUJI. He asked 'various creators to design an object not based on form or colour, but motivated by primarily by 'haptic' considerations.'

Relating to the sensation of touch the exhibition presents a fascinating selection of designs that are both thought-provocing and (as you would expect) tactile. Kenya Hara's own Water Pachinko is both thrilling and calming, a 'water pinball' that never ends, and has stood (or should that be tipped) the test of time. This is not a fate shared with a number of the other designs. Four years of being shifted about from country-to-country and touched by every other person before you has left many of the exhibits looking a little lifeless and in the case of the Remote Control, not even on standby. The exhibits have examples which visitors can touch and feel, but some of these have become quite worn.

This shouldn't put anyone off however, the ideas and rigour into this line of sensory inquiry is often brilliant - 'haptic' cups, clocks and cabbages among many highlights. They also illustrate just how little designers think about our sense of touch in the mass market, and in a world where the multi-touch display will soon be as common as the keyboard and mouse, the sensory experiments on display here may shine a light on paths of discovery for tomorrows designers in areas we can only imagine now.

The accompanying catalogue looks and feels as attentive to detail to the exhibits. The insightful interviews with the designers expand the exhibition and help understand the processes both of design and production. It also highlights a number of designs that didn't make the trip, such as Taku Satoh's fascinating A Tick, A Water Droplet and Wavering which takes the haptic inquiry into the realm of optics.

But it's Hara's own book, published last year, that takes centre stage. Designing Design is one of the finest examples of design writing and book production witnessed in recent years. A lucid and thoughtful writer, Hara brings a level of humanity to design that is rare. A wealthy chunk of the book is given to designers that have worked towards a number of Hara's exhibition projects and this says a great deal about the man and the designer too. The evident respect he shows his peers and the collective ethos that this breeds through his projects explains why they are so very successful.

The chapter on Exformation ('understanding how little we know' rather than 'making known') demands attention. Here Hara begins to question some of the problems visual communication finds itself in our information rich society: 'Evading the troublesome working of inquiring into it, we have become devoted to a game of "information catch." I wonder if this is where the problem of stagnating creativity in communication lurks.' The project work presented is compelling and rich, worth the price of admission alone.

The quality of the book production is Lars Muller at their very best. The page layout and book design are harmonious and considered, many designers will be secretly rather jealous at the shear restrained lavishness (is that possible?!) of Designing Design, but cannot fail to be charmed and intrigued by the author, his ideas, and evident generosity and spirit.

Anycall Haptic

Currently the best selling touch phone model in South Korea. WIth basic abilities (3 megapixel camera, bluetooth and MP3) the phone is a 3G (3rd generation) and allows HSPDA, aka fast data transfers, as well as video calling (note the small camera on the front). This phone also allows DMB broadcasts, digital money, and international roaming.

Cyon Viewty

One of the earlier touch-phone models, the key feature of this model is its 5.1 megapixel camera. It allows for xenon flash, face recognition, video calls, and video recordings. On top of its camera capabilties it allows FM radio, DMB broadcasts, IPOP (and other types) email, and bluetooth.

LG Prada Phone

The earliest candy-bar touch screen model that came even before the Apple iPhone. It was a hit in Korea for two reasons: the unique touch screen the cellphone had, and the name "Prada." With the country's obsession with luxury goods and items, it was a hit product and is still a steadily selling phone. It only some of the basic capabilities of MP3, bluetooth, and its 2 megapixel camera, but its well crafted games top it off.

Cyon Touch Web Phone

This was a touch phone model with the simple basics (video calls, camera, bluetooth) with the web browsing capability as its forte. Much like the iPhone.

El comercial Haptic Anycall de TVXQ & SNSD causó gran conmoción entre las fans (incluyéndome xD). Las parejas, las cuales son Max y Jessica, U-know y Tiffany, Micky y YoonA están muy cerca y tienen una 'casi escena de beso' (=.=) en el comercial.

Las noticias dicen que no solo las fans de TVXQ están celosas de las chicas, sino las fans de ellas se quejan de que los chicos son "maleducados" hacia ellas... lo que quiere decir [acoso]! I was curious to see what this CF would be like and it's really cute. Poor Xiah has no coupling! Jessica, YoonA and Tiffany were the main SoShi members in the CF. The other members are only ever seen in the scenes on the escalator. I personally really liked the YoonA/Yoochun coupling. Look at the caption above, YoonA's face is just like, "you are so not gonna kiss me like that" rofl. OJ. The Jessica/Changmin couple didn't really go I think. But their quick scene was cute as were the others. Yunho looks really serious when he's about to 'kiss' Tiffany, and Tiffany looks as though she wants to get it over and done with as soon as possible. JaeJoong looks so cute bless him. Tiffany is so lucky getting to be both JaeJoong and Yunho! ^_^

In ChangMin's case:
My lil sis cried a bit because what ChangMin did was really something he wouldn't do normally,
but he did was really cute and something he shouldn't do {acting cute leaning on Jessica's shoulder
and holding Jessica's hand in the lift} in front of the camera, on the screen view by
thousands of Cassiopeias. Well, i would say it's the age where we worship our idol like crazy and
i cried once {not because of TVXQ} when i was her age so i think it's okay.

In Yunho oppa's case:
What is that?! What's the whole meaning of the storyline of the CF anyway?!
Why the heck did Yunho oppa lean forward for a kissing motion?! Sorry, i know that they didn't
at all by all means to be possible kissing but still...why?! Yesterday, when i knew of Tiffany for
first time {i didn't quite know the faces and names} i think she's very cute but now...i found her
to be quite disturbing. Yunho oppa!!! Until now my twin sis who loves Yunho oppa haven't watch
the CF yet and she plans not to watch it at all. She don't want to get heart attack, it seems...
Seeing Yunho oppa doing this... she already banned 'Vacation' for having almost dangerous
'kissing scene', and now this... So not like him!! How could you do this to JaeJoong oppa?!

In Yoochun oppa's case:

This is so cute~! I reckon it's Yoochun oppa on top while JaeJoong oppa and ChangMin below~! Haha~! ChangMin seems like having back pain after that and both of them seems so tired... XD

The haptic device ("Happy") is a force feedback system mostly used for modeling in 3D.

It looks like a little arm with a pen attached to it. In the background on the monitor you can see a translucent image of my "sculpture."  It's a whole bunch of bubbles inside a sphere... the idea being you're stuck physically wandering around inside this annoying labyrinth... but when do finally get out (there are ways out) you are sad because you preferred the definition you felt on the inside to the feed-back-less abyss outside.

Sigh.
My original idea was a lot better, but I couldn't get it to work well enough.
I wanted to force the user's hand to write one person's name over and over and over- kind of a forced middle school crush, mantra, obsession. I thought it'd be funny to use someone's name from within the class I have to present in, but not tell them haha

oh well!
