President Shimon Peres believes there is no chance of an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.

Peres, the one-time proponent of a "new Middle East" made this statement last Saturday at a dinner with the Jordanian and French ambassadors in Defense Minister Ehud Barak's Tel Aviv apartment.

At the end of the meal an argument erupted between the Jordanian envoy, Ali Ayed, and a well-known "dovish" attorney, who said Israel had no chance of reaching an agreement with the Palestinian Authority under Mahmoud Abbas' leadership. Barak supported his guest's hawkish stance.
 
At a certain point, Peres intervened, surprising the participants by joining the attorney's prediction. "It would be very hard to reach an agreement," Peres said, due to the Hamas-Fatah split.

He said Abbas had no support among his people, no power to carry out security agreements and that any agreement Israel and the PA made crumbled a day later due to the PA's weakness. Therefore there is no chance of agreement, he summed.

Israeli regime has broken Gaza truce more than 28 times since it went into force two week ago, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad says.

Israel has violated the ceasefire 15 times in the first week and 13 times in the second week of the agreed truce, the movement said on Thursday.

Israel agreed two weeks ago to an Egyptian- brokered truce with Hamas in and around the Gaza Strip for six months, starting on June 19, in a bid of stemming the Palestinian attacks which harassed Israelis so that pressure on their regimes to sign the truce.

Most of the violations of the second week of the truce, which started on June 26, include Israeli soldiers firing at Palestinian farmers and fishermen in the land and sea and presence of reconnaissance planes over the Gaza Strip, the Islamic Jihad added.

Israel claimed today that a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip landed near the town of Sderot, there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the rocket fire.

The Islamic Jihad was accused by the Zionist regime in the first week of violating the ceasefire by firing a rocket into Israel which it said was in retaliation for an Israeli raid in the West Bank.

The candidate endorsed subsidies for private entrepreneurs to build low-income units. But, while he garnered support from developers, many projects in his former district have fallen into disrepair.

CHICAGO - The squat brick buildings of Grove Parc Plaza, in a dense neighborhood that Barack Obama represented for eight years as a state senator, hold 504 apartments subsidized by the federal government for people who can't afford to live anywhere else.

But it's not safe to live here.

About 99 of the units are vacant, many rendered uninhabitable by unfixed problems, such as collapsed roofs and fire damage. Mice scamper through the halls. Battered mailboxes hang open. Sewage backs up into kitchen sinks. In 2006, federal inspectors graded the condition of the complex an 11 on a 100-point scale - a score so bad the buildings now face demolition.

Among those tied to Obama politically, personally, or professionally are:

Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to Obama's presidential campaign and a member of his finance committee. Jarrett is the chief executive of Habitat Co., which managed Grove Parc Plaza from 2001 until this winter and co-managed an even larger subsidized complex in Chicago that was seized by the federal government in 2006, after city inspectors found widespread problems.

Allison Davis, a major fund-raiser for Obama's US Senate campaign and a former lead partner at Obama's former law firm. Davis, a developer, was involved in the creation of Grove Parc and has used government subsidies to rehabilitate more than 1,500 units in Chicago, including a North Side building cited by city inspectors last year after chronic plumbing failures resulted in raw sewage spilling into several apartments.

Antoin "Tony" Rezko, perhaps the most important fund-raiser for Obama's early political campaigns and a friend who helped the Obamas buy a home in 2005. Rezko's company used subsidies to rehabilitate more than 1,000 apartments, mostly in and around Obama's district, then refused to manage the units, leaving the buildings to decay to the point where many no longer were habitable.

Campaign finance records show that six prominent developers - including Jarrett, Davis, and Rezko - collectively contributed more than $175,000 to Obama's campaigns over the last decade and raised hundreds of thousands more from other donors. Rezko alone raised at least $200,000, by Obama's own accounting.

One of those contributors, Cecil Butler, controlled Lawndale Restoration, the largest subsidized complex in Chicago, which was seized by the government in 2006 after city inspectors found more than 1,800 code violations. (Chicago Globe)

Let's get real here," Chopp told the Seattle Times editorial board. "If they want to [build a new arena], we're not stopping them. They can pay for it themselves."

Feds say they’ll keep closing gap in funding for light rail.

Federal officials announced on Monday that they will do all they can to make up for a shortfall in money previously pledged for the city's light rail starter line that is now under construction.

Federal Transit Administrator James S. Simpson awarded the city $18.9 million toward the $128 million the government promised for the project.

The FTA had budgeted a $57 million contribution to the project for fiscal year 2008, but Congress appropriated only $23 million. With Monday's announcement, this year's federal share is about $15 million less than anticipated.

This is Seattle's light rail system running from downtown to the airport. This line was originally designed to serve riders from the University District through to the airport, but the line was shortened after costs increased. Soon after voters approved Sound Transit, discussions began on extending the line to Northgate, which has a large regional bus transit center. Even future extensions to the Eastside or to Tacoma were proposed.

Then the problems began. Due to the unique topography of the Seattle area, as well as its urbanization, a significant portion of the line needed to be in a tunnel under Capitol Hill and the University District.. It turned out the tunneling would cost more than predicted due to difficult soils. Then, another large portion of the line was designed to run at street level through South Seattle. The community was upset by this, and demanded concessions. These issues led to years of delays...at a time when property values were just about doubling every year. Note that Sound Transit didn't own any of the right of way for the project.

OLYMPIA-- With or without Seattle's approval, the state will tear down the earthquake-damaged Alaskan Way Viaduct in 2012, Gov. Chris Gregoire said Thursday.

"It's coming down in 2012. I'm taking it down -- the middle," she said, referring to the elevated portion of the span that runs roughly from Battery Street Tunnel to Pioneer Square, which has been the most vexing and controversial piece of the transportation puzzle.

"That's the timeline. I'm not going to fudge on it. And if we don't have some alternative by then, boy are we going to have a mess on our hands because it's coming down."

Asked if she, as governor, could trump the state's largest city and county and unilaterally tear down a highway that carries more than 100,000 vehicles a day through the heart of Seattle, Gregoire said:

"Yeah, watch me."

"YEAH, WATCH ME"

I don’t see many McCain Stickers, but I don’t believe that it is because we are afraid of having them taken off by Obama supporters. I think it is more of a statement of how Right of Center people view politics.

We see politics, politicians, and government as a necessary evil that we tolerate in order to defend the peace, pave roads, and keep the loonies from destroying the country. We see our government as the original founders saw it. We see our government as something that we have to keep a lease on to keep it from getting out of control with power. That is why we love the constitution so much. In part it was designed to keep our power hungry politicians from intruding on our freedom and making this country into what we left behing in England and Europe.

Obama represents the old European:

And New for that matter, style controlling government. Obama is the tpe of leader who made the first settlers leave England and come to America for freedom, we need to stop him now in order to keep our country free; there is no place for us to go to and form a new 'Land of the Free".

WE know that our leaders are human and full of human flaws. We know that we must keep them under check and balance their power with our power.

Lefties see government as the answer to all human ills, happiness, and human evolution. They see politicians as Messiahs, Kings/Queens, Healers, All-knowing, Omnipotent, god like beings that know more than the average person. That is why the left is always eagerly willing to give up our freedoms and prosperity to Obama types and swoon to their knees in obedience.

A nuclear armed Iran will feel free to attack Israel and destroy the Jewish state once and for all. I don’t know any reasonable person who doubts this. The Israelis, if they wish to continue to exist, have no alternative but to attack Iran before they have an atomic bomb.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has made it quite clear that he has no love for Israel and has many times offered dark hints of what he would do if he had the bomb.  Adolf Hitler also laid out his hatred and what he would do, given the chance, in his book Mein Kampf, which the world ignored. The state of Israel has no choice but to take the lunatic Ahmadinejad at his word and therefore has no choice but to hit Iran, very hard, before Iran has enough plutonium to make a bomb. Iran has embarked on a path that can only end in great loss of life through its mindless hatred of the Jewish People in general and the Jewish State in particular.

The case for war is air tight, clearly Israel is reacting to an existential threat and any and all means to prevent a nuclear attack can and should be used in an unavoidable preemptive war against Iran. The nation of Israel is so small that if the demented Ahmadinejad gets off the first shot, then Israel is up a crick without a paddle: war over, Israel is destroyed. I don’t think the question is if Israel will attack but when will Israel attack.  Will the war widen, not only in the middle east, but how much of the rest of the world will it engulf? Israel has a gun to its head and has to do what it has to do but I understand that Iran could plunge the planet into a depression overnight if they were able to disrupt oil production and distribution in any significant way. It’s as clear and air tight a case that Ahmadinejad will try his best to do exactly that as it is that Israel is out of time and must attack if she wants to continue to exist.

My hope is that the war will come with George W. Bush still in office. For one thing the most militant Jihadi may hate President Bush but they also fear him tremendously.  They know quite well that if they pull any crap with Bush they may well find the 3^rd Infantry Division in Tehran and the 4^th Infantry Division in Damascus.  They don’t like to admit to such fears but if they are bound and determined to disrupt oil on Bush’s watch then Bush will attack with all the recourses of the United States.  I suspect that the very presence of Bush in the White House is enough to give the militant Jihadi’s in Iran a moment of pause.  That’s a good thing.  If Bush is calling the shots, we in the west are likely to come thru this thing ok.  If the Jihadi’s know that Obama is about to be sworn in as president, or that he is the president, at the time of the attack; the likelihood of rash moves against the world oil supply increases exponentially.

It’s unfortunate that Israel is currently facing these perilous times with the worst Prime Minister they’ve ever had in the hapless Ehud Olmert.  It’s like the Israeli Jimmy Carter, the man can’t do anything right and he is a proven failure as a wartime leader. Olmert is currently up to his eyebrows in scandal from some shady dealing he supposedly did while he was mayor of Jerusalem and new elections are coming in the fall.  With a little luck they may get Benjamin Netanyahu back and he can clean up the Iran mess.  Given the prospect of a weak American President in Obama, they need a guy like Netanyahu who is willing to go it alone, if necessary, to take care of his country.  Perhaps the worst outcome would be if Olmert ended up trying to run the war because the guy is a train wreck in military matters.

The Israeli’s are currently letting it be known that they are coming unless Iran changes its tune on acquiring nukes.  There have been very pointed leaks about a huge air exercise that was recently run and all preparations necessary for an attack of this magnitude seem to be occurring, publicly, so that Iran can back off now if they wish to avoid war. Iran is typically intransigent on giving up its nuclear program and the Israeli’s will have to attack within the next six months if they want to manage the situation to best advantage.  My hope is that they will attack before the American election so as to have the support of the Bush administration and the Presidential Candidates who will not wish to offend the Jewish vote. Obama may come across as a weakling but he’s also very much a pragmatist and he may well end up having to support Israel before the election in ways he would never have done after the election.

War in the Middle East seems to be a given.  The timing of the war is the only point at issue and when it hits the price of oil will be the first casualty.  I hope the Fifth Fleet is ready for action because they economic fate of the west may well be riding on their shoulders.  Iran is into every rotten thing going on in the Middle East.  They destabilize Iraq and smuggle in arms and Jihadi’s to kill our solders and destabilize their neighbor.  They are the force behind Hamas and Syria and they are led by a theocratic crazy man who defiantly needs to be kicked off the world stage. 

It’s a just war but its effects may well hit the United States like an avalanche.  I hope the Israeli’s attack is massive, quick, and decisive because the whole world is going to be feeling the effects.  Taking out Iran is a job worth doing but Israel and the West are going to need a full measure of courage because the stakes for everyone have never been higher.

Israel opened the Gaza crossings for the shipment of supplies, including cement for the first time in a year, after Gaza militants halted rocket attacks on southern Israel.

At the same time clashes erupted at the Rafah crossing into Egypt as Palestinians hurled stones at the Egyptian security forces positioned on the other side of the crossing and tried to force their way through.

Egyptian forces used water cannon on the crowds.

This is the most important election of our lifetime. We must be strategic in our actions and endeavors. It is not enough sit and complain about an Obama presidency. We must be diligent, forthright and purposeful in keeping this man out of the most powerful position in the World.

The Carter Years

For those of us who lived through the Jimmy Carter years we know what is in store for us. Gas rationing, Iran hostages, inflation, stagflation, misery index, high interest rates, high unemployment, weakened military.... The newby voters have no clue how far down a radical liberal president can take this country in a few short years. Carter was just your average bumbling liberal. Obama is the real deal radical liberal. His mistakes will be detrimental enough, his intended actions will destroy our economic health and our social structure. Young people will identify with the thought that they will not be allowed to prosper financial in their lifetime, they will understand that freedom of choice of career decisions and financial success will be hampered if Obama takes over. They need to know that Obama will weaken our military. Hugh Hewitt's pamphlet lays out this information in a precise and concise way, in a style that plays to the younger voter.

Last week, my friend Melanie Morgan of Move America Forward and I co-hosted a special Internet telethon on Ustream.tv to raise money for care packages to send to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The effort yielded more than $1.1 million thanks to thousands of generous donors across the country. Among the special guests who contributed time and resources was musician John Ondrasik of Five For Fighting.

BBC reporter Tim Franks had a bird's eye view of Wednesday's attack in Jerusalem by a Palestinian bulldozer operator. Franks watched the surreal scene unfold as the enraged driver flattened cars, knocked over a bus and killed at least 3 people before being shot dead himself. Here is part of his chilling testimony:

What I first of all heard rather than saw was the shouts and screams of people down below me on the street.

I have an office that overlooks the Jaffa Road, and I looked out and saw that a bulldozer had gone into the side of a bus.

I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing, but then my astonishment grew further when I realised that this was a deliberate attack because the bulldozer then went back into the side of the bus, and then I think a third time before the bus toppled over.

It's down on the street just in front of me, now I'm looking at it from my office, and it went over, apparently very, very easily... of course with people inside it.

There were people on the street who seemed almost as if they were flapping ineffectually at the bus, trying in some way to keep it upright, but it went over.

At that point, we careered down onto the street to see in more detail what was going on, and by the time we got down there, the bulldozer had gone maybe 100m-150m (330ft-500ft) further down the road, and had come to a halt, but not before several cars and taxis had been run over with people inside.

It was a grisly scene, and horns were still blaring.

Most news outlets report that Police are calling this a terrorist incident. Surprisingly Reuters did use the "T" word in their account as well... but then made darn sure to immediately follow that with a Hamas spokesman's take on the attack:

"We do not expect it will influence the Gaza calm," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in the Gaza Strip.

"There is a continued aggression against our people in the West Bank and Jerusalem and so it is natural that our people there will respond to such aggression," he said.

Yes, flattening innocent Jewish commuters is SO natural. And these are the swell people Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter want to sit down and have a friendly chat with.

This area is a powder keg and we'd best brace ourselves for what is to come. It is becoming abundantly clear that there is not going to be peace in this region without war preceding it, folks.

Of course the Jeruselum bulldozer rampage was a great tragedy and hopefully the death toll of the incident does not rise any further. At the time of writing three (including driver) are understood to be dead, with dozen injured, seven critically.

However, I did find it disconcerting that both CNN and BBC said the Israeli police are considering the attack to be a an act of "terrorism". The term is of course so manipulated in its usage rendering it meaningless, but I can only see their decision to use the term as political and irresponcible. Firstly, on what grounds was the attack by definition terrorism? If it is because the perpetrator was an Arab or Palestinian, than this is clearly racist. If the perpetrator was of another race would it be terrorism? Was it the weapon he choose to use? Considering the Israelis devastating use of bulldozers against the Palestinian people, it is hypocritical for the Israelis to deem this attack as terrorism, regardless of the perpetrators actions, which I of course do not condone. Even foreign peace activists have been the victims of the Israeli bulldozer attacks. Was that terrorism? As of yet no one can clearly ascertain as to whether the perpetrators motives were political, or whether he was aligned to particular Palestinian group. Can it really not be ruled out that the attack was non-political (hard to imagine I know and understandably unlikely, yet still plausible)?

To me it appears that the haste in which the Israelis have used this term is politically motivated. As talks resume and cease fires are discussed, diplomacy could be potentially derailed by violence by either side. As it stands, Israeli "security" operations are still taking place in the Gaza strip. It appears each side is eager to resume full on conflict. The will of the civilians are, as always, ignored.

Está muy claro que Hizbulá utilizará el canje como un argumento importante para su reintegración como un movimiento de resistencia. Durante los enfrentamientos armados del pasado mayo en Líbano, la milicia-partido político chií incumplió su misión declarada de no usar armas en un conflicto interno. En Israel el canje de prisioneros coincide con un momento de intensas divisiones políticas internas y las acusaciones de corrupción a las que se está enfrentando el primer ministro Ehud Olmert. No existe un consenso en Israel sobre si el gobierno debería negociar con su enemigo acérrimo, Hizbulá, por la ayuda que recibe éste de Irán.  Uno de los motivos clave del apoyo por parte del gabinete israelí al canje de prisioneros es su incapacidad de rescatar al navegador de las Fuerzas Aéreas Israelíes Ron Arad, secuestrado en Líbano en 1986, y todavía en paradero desconocido. Además, está la política declarada de Israel de hacer lo que haga falta para rescatar a los soldados, vivos o muertos. 

Es muy importante entender el contexto regional de este último acontecimiento. Existe un consenso hoy en día entre Europa y EE.UU. de que hay que aislar a Irán, el mayor valedor de Hizbulá. Se está materializando esta política con el canje de presos, así como con la decisión europea, y sobre todo francesa, de acercarse a Siria, otro valedor de la causa de Hizbulá. A esto hay que sumar el reciente acuerdo de alto el fuego entre Hamás e Israel.

 ¿Esta nueva estratagema política tendrá éxito? Recientemente, y según los medios de comunicación, ¡un líder sirio dijo que distanciar a Siria de Irán sería tan imposible como abrir una brecha entre Israel y los EE.UU!

A BITTERSWEET SWAP 

Last Sunday the Israeli government approved 22-to-0 a prisoner swap with Hezbollah whereby Israel would free Lebanese prisoners in exchange for the bodies of two Israeli soldiers killed in the summer 2006 Lebanon war. That war was provoked when the Shia militant group abducted two Israeli soldiers, Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser.  Sayyid Hasan Nasrallah, Hezbollah's leader, had justified the kidnapping as a pressure move to get back Lebanese militants held in Israeli jails. 

This is not the first time that a prisoner swap takes place between Lebanon and Israel. In 1983, Israel freed 4,600 Palestinian and Lebanese captives in exchange for six Israeli soldiers abducted during the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. Prisoner swaps took also place in 1985, 1991, and 1996. In 2004, Israel and Hezbollah went through another exchange when an Israeli civilian and the bodies of three Israeli soldiers were exchanged for 436 Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners and the bodies of 59 Lebanese fighters. 

In the irrational environment that characterizes the conflict between Israel and its Arab neighbours, prisoners have also been a useful card used by both sides.   When it was still operating in Lebanon, the PLO went through a prisoners´ swap with the Israelis despite the latter's refusal to deal with "terrorists." The same has applied since Hezbollah appeared in force on the Lebanese scene in 1982. Negotiations for the prisoner swap took place between a strong state, Israel, and guerrilla fighters first Palestinian then Lebanese, with the help of foreign, mostly German, mediators. Pragmatism prevailed on both sides. 

Reactions in Lebanon and Israel were sweet in Lebanon and bitter in Israel. In Lebanon, there is a consensus that the forthcoming prisoner swap (by mid-July if not earlier) is an opportunity to unify the Lebanese despite recent divisions and armed clashes. It is very clear that the swap will be a major card Hezbollah will use to reinstate its major mission as a resistance movement. During last May's clashes in Lebanon the Shia militia cum political party had violated its stated aim not to use its weapons in any internal conflict. This is in fact what had happened and Hezbollah lost a lot of its support among certain sections of the Lebanese population especially in the Sunni and Druze communities. 

In Israel, the prisoner swap comes at a time of bitter internal political divisions and accusations of corruption levelled against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. There is no consensus in Israel on whether the government should negotiate with Israel's bitter enemy, the Iranian-supported Hezbollah. One of the major elements that led the Israeli cabinet to approve the prisoner's swap is the failure to rescue Israeli Air Force navigator Ron Arad abducted in Lebanon in 1986 and whose whereabouts are still unknown. Add to that Israel's stated policy to make the utmost effort to liberate abducted soldiers or obtain their bodies. 

It is very important to place this latest development in a regional context. There is today a US-European consensus that Iran, Hezbollah's major backer, ought to be isolated. This policy is now being materialized by the prisoners' swap and by the European, mostly French, decision to open up to Syria, another champion of Hezbollah's cause. Add to that the recent ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel.

On Tuesday, Israeli war minister Ehud Barak ordered the military to close most of the key crossings with the Gaza Strip until further notice, in retaliation for an overnight rocket attack from Gaza.

Palestinians accuse Israel of violating the Egypt-mediated ceasefire in the Gaza Strip more than 15 times since it went into force officially on June 19.
