What do people make a big deal about love. Why are so many movies made about the same subjet. I dont understand , frankly I have never considered love to be a big deal. I think of it as breathing , its there it is necessary but who cares about breathing or air till you run out of it. Same with love , we are sourounded by it. The problem is when you bind your love a single person or persons thats when you can experience a sense of loss. But open your mind and see around, there is love everywhere embrace it and dont worry about minor things such as the love for an individuals. Our heart is actually virtual, so it is unbreakable but if you limit your love it will break, if not now sometime in the future for sure. Break free from the pair of oppsites gain , loss - meeting and parting and see true undiminished love.

I have never understood the term work life balance. All the time that we live is life, even the time

I have never understood the term work life balance. All the time that we live is life, even the time we work. More often than not most of our waking day will be related work the prepration ( I believe most people like me will only shower when you have to go work), the commute back and forth, the actuall act of work , the discussions about work, the dreaming of the next big increase in compensation etc.. So how can we really balance it with things we do outside of work. Probably to strike balance we need to start living at work , learn to enjoy our job. Not probably the whole time but little things maybe you have a nice office , or someone nice looking in office. May you have fantastic restroom in office. Maybe the food is good or the commute is short. Start enjoying these small things at work and then you will see life as whole will seem more enjoyable.

Why is life a contest ? why are most activites in life about winning and losing. I dont really under

Why is life a contest ? why are most activites in life about winning and losing. I dont really understand. I like to think of how much time we spend in thinking about outcomes that we really fortget to enjoy the process. For me the process is key rather than the outcome , becuase that is what is my control. For example if I were incharge of a project , I would rather worry about planning the tasks correctly , tracking them and controlling the critical success factors. And then if the project failed , so be it , I did what I could. But unfortunatley for most things around us , we have to worry about the outcome and hence the worry factor in life comes up. We worry when we have to discuss probable outcomes of situations. That infact adds no value , it is like buying a lottery ticket or gambling. Once you have bought the ticket or laid down the bet , no matter how much we worry we cannot impact the outcome. We could have done some inillegent betting to influence the probablility of the outcome but thats it.

So here is my theory , we should focus all our energies on the process i.e. the activities that are in our control. Anything else is not worth worrying as we cannot do anything to influence it. There is such thing called luck !! And it works best when you let nature take its course !!

So don't worry be happy !!

I am an optimist , I mean a hard core optimist. But there are times I feel down in the dumps and then I start to worry. Worry is like a cancer to the soul - it keeps eating out your energy and yet does not help. When you worry you are focussing all your energies on the problem and however much you worry it does not help the situation, infact you get drawn into a downard spiral. Well I have learned to crawl out of these situations by having faith and paitence. I believe that in general people are okay and want to do good and it is only the situation or circumstance that causes them to behave otherwise. So when I am down - I use this faith , I focus on the good that come out of the situation. And when all feels hopeless - I draw on my inner faith in GOD - that no matter what HE is behind all that happens and so whatever is happening is for my benefit. Ofcourse there is paitence , you have to wait and not expect results in a flash. Things take time and the best results happen when you let things take their natural course of time. So with my faith in the mankind and paitence - I usually crawl out of despondent situations. And more often then not - I think life is a bed of roses.

Handling pressure seprates the successfull and the not so successfull. There is a lot of debate abo

Handling pressure seprates the successfull and the not so successfull. There is a lot of debate about whether this ability is inherent or can people can trained to handle pressure. My view is both - some people are just born with this ability and can do perform at amazing levels when under pressure. Others like me have learn this ability the hard way - which is by diligent practise. Here are some techniques I use when handling pressure

1. Focus on the solution and not the problem: Pressure is the result of some problem/crisis/must-do scenario. In this scenario there will many problems or ends of how you cannot solve the issue lack of time, difficulty level etc.. Try and not focus on the problems but focus on the solution. This will clear your mind and hence the pressure. If this is no solution there is no hope so forget about the pressure.

2. Prepare for the worst case: No matter what the wrost possible outcome - you will be better off if you prepare for the same. So plan for the worst case scenario and hope for the best.

3. Accept fear: Fear is good - it tells you are human. Also if you deny fear you will spend way too much effort in admiting that you are not afraid and the focus will be on the object of fear. So Drop it - admit that you are afraid. It will calm you down.

4. Close your eyes and imagine the success: Sometimes it just helps to visualize your path to success. Typicall successfull golfers do this before every shot it helps your mind train your body for the same.

Most people who have been a part of this process will cringe at the mention of performance appra

Most people who have been a part of this process will cringe at the mention of performance appraisals. To introduce the topoic performance reviews or appraisals are tools to evaluate an indiaviduals performance against expectations of the organization. This is critical in a corporate setup where there is a lot of competetion and pressure to move upwards. This is a time for feedback when positive and negative contributions of the individual are discussed and also the planning for the future is undertaken.

Now all this is fine but the most critical outcome of most appraisals is a number - called rating. This is where the problem starts , the whole time the appraisal becomes a battel of justification of the rating and precious feedback about the individual is lost. The manager tries to justify the rating and the staff also the same. What happens is that they now become adversaries for that period and it doesn't become for a good relationship. So what can be done

The Manager

1. Start with positive feedback: No matter what rating you are going to give to the individual. Put him/her at ease by discussing the positive feedback for the past period of the appraisal.

2. In case there have been projects/assignments that have failed focus on the incident and not on the individual. Do not try and analyse the failure and appropriate the blame to the individual. All of us are professionl and come to work to give our 100%. Focus on incidents which would be rooted in facts and hence will not brook much argument.

3. Now comes the tough part (in case of average or below average performance) - look the individual in the eye and say clearly that his/her performance is falling short of the team or there are other indivuduals performing better. This simple truth will set you free. Ofcourse there will be arguments saying show me how the others are better etc.. and when the indivual makes such arguments your decision will stand vidicated. Of the rare people who do accept this feedback - mark them out and try to work with them to improve their performance. These will be good guys.

The Appraisee:

1. Accept the rating - do not negotiate or bargain about the rating. It does not help. Most corporate systems are such that the rating has been decided before the appraisal starts. So you are better off accepting the rating and getting it over with.

2. Focus on feedback: Once the rating is agreed you are helping your manager buy lifting a huge burden of his shoulders. He/she will then be very open in giving you the appropriate feedback.

3. Get a plan ready for the next period. Once the feedback is ready - start planning for the next period. Discuss the training needs , any specific projects etc.. that you want to handle. Remember your manager is now quite happy that the rating is out of the door so he/she will be very open for this meeting.

I have appraised in excess of 2000 staff and been appraised more than 50 times and can testify these have worked for me. Try it and let me know how it went for you.

Almost all aspects of our daily life are touched by technology. Most of our activities in our waking state are managed by technology. However one big factor so far has been that technology has enabled or managed tasks which have required little to no intelligence. And we are reaching the limits of what can be achieved by this tech. How much smaller can cell phones be, how many more features can you add on to them. How much faster can computers be ? How much more processing power can they have ? So whats next ? What would keep the minds of millions of scientiests occupied. One thing for sure most technology innovations are now focussed on enhancing our intilligence or more appropriately encourating us to to use our mind more often. Look at search engines or social networking sites , the technology to develop these existed for a long time just was never used in this form. These encourage you to use your mind and focus on your human side rather than just helping your body.

So I see a couple of new inventions coming our way

1. How about a cellphone that can actually gauge my mood and warn the caller of the same ?

2. How about car that warns me that I am drunk

3. How about a new internet which also appeases our sense of smell rather just hearing or seeing and maybe uses the touch also.

I have not seen the future - but only dreamt of it. Share your thoughts on this.

Drama takes birth only when there two or more people prone to dramatic behaviour. If you are drama prone, then you must have noticed how you can almost be assured of no drama if the person you are longing to be dramatic with is a balanced, well adjusted, drama-free person ? The only way to avoid drama, if you find yourself frequently involved in dramas and want to get out of them, is avoid dramatic people...like plague. The tricky thing is to recognize dramatic people. And that is easier said than done. But once recognized, avoid that person, for your own good and his/hers.

Have been kinda watching this on and off (and with MTV repeating it every evening 9 PM, its kinda hard to miss, when you are looking for music). After Guys taking it a little too far last week with Zorban Irani (that girl has s**t loads of attitude and I like her), the show had a decent twist this week. No of girls winning down by 1 to 1 and that girl now gets to choose the guy who wins the show. So, its turned from 'run as free as you can' to 'dudes, get real! there are no free lunches' for guys. They have to stay on till the end and they have to please every girl every week to not get f**ked at the end of the show when the lady winner chooses the other one!

Reminds me of:

Don't be too sure of your GOOD TIMES!

You may not even realise, when they just walked out on you!

A really nice article on why at times being the color you are affects how people decide to deal with you! I am not really commenting on what should be done with Mugabe. It will have to be something that the biggies need to decide. You need to consider all the nice things that have happened in the African Diamond State; 8 figure inflation, thousands killed and handicapped in politically backed voilence; a African food bowl that has gone to the dogs (i agree with redistribution, but not at the cost it came and the way it was executed) and all that continues to happen in the state.

Zimbabwe is not the only case of this kind of reverse-racial behavior; look at Somalia, Congo, Central African Republic; I don't know much about these places but lets face it who does?

It was only time before something like this happened. US has used Pakistan as a base for its fights for more than 2 decades now. It has, over time turned a blind eye to various failures by successive governments to put into place or destroy existing essential democratic systems. These have lead to continuing reduction faith people have in the government and its effectiveness to contain crime and provide basic guarantees.

And, as of now with Peshawar going to Taliban anytime now, all of this will comeback to haunt US big time for this is region which is one of the most important supply routes (Khyber Pass) to Afghan battlefields. So you know, 'What goes Around, Comes Around!' and after abusing Pakistan for all these years... US will have to repay it either by helping it save it's cities or getting out and getting screwed in Afghanistan. But then we know US, it may just find some other country to screw over.

For something I have been thing should I be writing this blog? If yes, what should I write and why should I write about the same?

After a lot of thinking the answer to the first question is yes I should be for a simple reason that I like writing. Now what should I write about? I can write about a f1, books, or you know a full on dedicated blogs on any one of my hobbies. But then the problem with them is that there are already many for them. And anyway the only thing unique I can provide the world is me and the inert lack of concentration, liking of all things beautiful and new! So, I am not going to keep myself bound by any rules on what to post or what not to... and enjoy all things beautiful in life! And if possible let other people know about it (you have to read this blog for this one!)

What is leadership ? How is it different in knowledge work environment ? More importantly is leadership even necessary in a knowledge society. Lets talk about this. In a knowledge society individuals are highly motivated, they are self-starters and highly skilled to carry out the tasks expected. So what would a leader do ? Tradationally a leader would strive to motivate the team, ensure proper training, coordination etc.. withing the team. But in a knowledge environment these things are done by the knowledge workers themselves. So what will a leader do here. In this case a leaders job is to remove any obstacles in the path of the team. So that the team can focus on the core task. The leader becomes the infterace to all non-essential things a team must do and thus enables the team to perform at the highest levels of efficiency. This is a big shift and leader does not remain a manager but becomes more of a co-worker who is enabiling efficiency.

Managing people is tough probably beause there is no science behind it. The same stimulus can yeld amazingly different responses from different individuals even sometimes from the same individual. There are too many variables to take into account - the personal value system, the society, the culture, personal circumstances, family issues, feelings etc.. So it is nearly impossible to predict how someone will behave given a particualr event. Yet we have to get work done, we have to plan and this involves prediction of desired behaviour. And somehow there seems to be a framework on which we can base people management - I have dug through my experience and that of some of my esteemed friends and have come up with somes - here goes

Rule 1: Trust breeds efficiency: The more you trust - the more you will delegate and the less time you will spend in tracking. This will lead increased efficiency. This rule can only apply at certain levels of maturity i.e. the managerial cadre etc..

Rule 2: Don't react to disasters: No matter what the situation learn to count to 100 before you respond. Whatever may the disaster - it is now in the past and no matter what you do - you cannot change the past !! So be gracious and act with a calm mind and see how the team will start looking up to you.

Rule 3: Be as honest as possible: Most people are intelligent and they can smell bullshit a mile away. Remember how many times you have switched off when listening to BS from your seniors. So don't commit the same mistake be as real and as honest as possible. It builds great bridges of communication.

Rule 4: Don't Change things just for the sake of it: They say change is necessary - but make you sure you don't make chanegs just because you have read that it is necessary. Try to keep things stable - the easiest teams to manage are the ones in a steady state. However if change is necessary then over communicate about the need to change ( again remember Rule 3).

Rule 5: Make you communication non-transactional: Many-a-time managers are guilty of communiting with their teams only when necessary that is what is called transactional communication examples would be - communicating management strategy, announcements, data collection emails etc.. This is necessary and by all means we should continue but also important is some non-transactional communication about - your views, some personal updates of team membes, sharing successcess etc..

Rule 6: Focus on the present and the future: I am really surprised at how much time some people spend about issues in the past - you should not have done that, that is not how I would have done it, that was a mistake, we did well , those were good times etc.. It may be a good water cooler conversation but what will get a team motivated is the simple thing of "What should I do today to make my tomorrow better" - Focus on this and not on the past

Abs - the manager

I have finally decided to take the GMAT by the end of this year.

I reached this decision after a lot of thinking and self evaluation. Obviously cracking the GMAT is not easy but a dedicated 3-4 month effort can see me through with a decent score. At same time I need to look after my work assignments as well.

I have a few schools in India on my mind which accept GMAT scores, first and the foremost being ISB. Even though I might not be eligible on the work ex front but a try at ISB will always be worth it.

I have also heard about Great Lakes, Chennai that accepts GMAT scores for their one year programme. The placement scenario is also good.

Plus there are SP Jain, FORE and MICA.

The GMBA programmme from SP Jain sounds good…lets see. First I need to concentrate on taking the GMAT and planning to finalize the tentative date of my exam.

One of the important characteristics of a senior manager is that he is open and frank and the at the same time non-contravertial. Which is you have to put on a show and fake being open and frank. That is be open about issues which will help you i.e. if you are discussing employee productivity you can always say we don't have enough work, we can always do more etc.. which looks good but for no reason should provide your frank opinion of the management policies which ridiculuous. Keep those opinions to yourself. This is an art and once perfected you will be regarded as a person who is open and frank and hence can be trusted.

It will be almost 2 months now since my last post, which was also my first post... :) Blogging is not easy or rather taking out time for blogging is not easy. Studying, Working and Blogging - a perfect combination to keep you busy 24x7, trust me you wont even have time for your girlfriend! Well, but still its not that difficult to manage.

lol I am talking as if I am some great blogger who has contributed about 132,957 articles. Who knows this may be a beginning for something that big... well therez always hope to make one happy... :) and I am an optimist, and the hope has already made me happy! Don't bother i didn't understand myself.

The only purpose of this post is to keep this blog alive. :)

Last week I appeared for my MBA 2nd sem exams, its was not that bad experience, and now after writing so many exams all these years, I have got used to such traumas. I really hate the written method of evaluation, I feel it is not the right method of evaluating ones talent, abilities or potentials.
<Gyan> I feel at PG level one should also work along with studies. Its not the certificate which will help one become something, but it the learning from work that will help you take a big leap towards achieving your career goals. </Gyan Ends>

Now its vacation time! Time to forget all those bad things ( i.e, studies, studies and studies) and have fun. Hopefully this time I will join gym, something that i have been hoping to do for quite some years. :) Lets hope that, the hope will hopefully come true this time!

Cheers
