El seleccionado masculino de básquet demostró porque fue el último campeón olímpico en Atenas 2004. Con el común aporte de todos los partidos de Manu Ginóbili (24 puntos), el excelente partido de Carlos Delfino (23 puntos, 15 en el último cuarto), y el trabajo duro debajo el aro de Scola y Oberto, Argentina logró vencer a Grecia por 80 a 78. Al igual que en Atenas 2004 venció a Grecia en cuartos de final y ahora espra en la semifinal al poderoso Estados Unidos.

Un ejemplo de la entrega del equipo fue la actitud del santafecino Nocioni quien con una lesión en la pierna decidió seguir jugando y aportando todo su potencial, a esto se le llama dejar todo en la cancha. Cabe destacar que todo el equipo fue figura, Prigioni desde la base, el ingreso de Leo Gutiérrez para convertir un triple clave y aportar su defensa, el ingreso de Román González para neutralizar al grandote de Grecia, y la agilidad de Paolo Quinteros para buscar esos tiros que a el tan bien le salen.

El viernes a las 11 de la mañana se espera a Estados Unidos, difícil pero no imposible. Vamos muchachos.

Los primeros 7 deportistas del total de 13 que conforman la delegación peruana para estas olimpiadas, ya están en Beijing.

Esta viene a ser una de las mas pequeñas delegaciones (si acaso no es la mas reducida) que ha enviado el Perú para participar en unas olimpiadas, fiel reflejo de la realidad del deporte peruano que atraviesa una grave crisis institucional. Todos somos testigos de las terribles condiciones que tienen que enfrentar los que practican algún deporte en el Perú, debido a la falta de inversión de parte del Estado y del reducido apoyo de las instituciones privadas peruanas. Debido a esto es que inclusive varios de los deportistas de esta delegación vienen desde el extranjero, a donde han tenido que emigrar pues solo afuera encuentran las condiciones mínimas para desarrollar sus aptitudes deportivas.

Sin embargo y a pesar de toda esta situación, todos los peruanos enviamos nuestro respaldo y apoyo moral a estos 13 héroes y heroinas del deporte nacional, invocándoles que pongan todo su empeño y corazón en su participación, de tal forma que puedan cumplir sus mas valiosos anhelos.

Brazilië heeft meteen aangedrongen op snelle gesprekken binnen de Organisatie van Amerikaanse Staten (OAS) om de spanningen tussen Ecuador, Venezuela en Colombia te ontmijnen. Experts vreesden dat de economische integratie van Zuid-Amerika zware schade zou oplopen als de crisis ook maar even uit de hand loopt. De Braziliaanse regering wil ook dat een commissie van de OAS de Colombiaanse aanval onderzoekt.

Een gewapend conflict, 'zelfs als het maar een dag duurt en er nauwelijks doden vallen, zou een permanente vlek' nalaten op de relaties in Zuid-Amerika en het regionale integratieproces helemaal ondergraven, vreest de Braziliaanse senator Cristovam Buarque.

Clinton en Obama

De Amerikaanse presidentskandidate voor de Democraten, Hillary Clinton, wijst Hugo Chavez, de Venezuelaanse president, aan als boosdoener in het conflict. 'Het bevel van Hugo Chavez om tien bataljons te sturen naar de Colombiaanse grens is ongewettigd en gevaarlijk.' De presidentskandidate beschuldigt Chavez van samenwerking met terroristische organisaties zoals het Farc, het revolutionair leger in Colombia.

Barack Obama heeft Colombia, Ecuador  en Venezuela opgeroepen om het conflict diplomatisch op te lossen. 'De presidenten van Colombia, Ecuador en Venezuela hebben de verantwoordelijkheid om de gebeurtenissen niet uit de hand te laten lopen.' De oproep past binnen Obama's plan om de diplomatieke betrekkingen met Latijns-Amerikaanse landen te verbeteren. Obama wil ook Chavez de hand reiken, een voorstel dat Clinton als naïef bestempeld heeft.

Reacties op resolutie

De Permanente Raad van de Organisatie van Amerikaanse Staten (OAS) heeft ondertussen een resolutie aangenomen die stelt dat Colombia de nationale soevereiniteit van Ecuador heeft geschaad door zaterdag een kamp van de FARC aan te vallen, de Revolutionaire Gewapende Troepen van Colombia.

De Venezolaanse regering steunde de resolutie wel, maar verklaarde te werken aan een krachtiger besluit tegen Colombia, te nemen door de ministers van Buitenlandse Zaken. De meeste landen bekritiseerden de operatie van Colombia, dat alleen openlijke steun kreeg van de Verenigde Staten.

De Ecuadoraanse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken María Isabel Salvador had dinsdag een veroordeling geëist van de actie. Bovendien zal er, volgens de wens van Ecuador, een buitengewone vergadering van ministers van buitenlandse zaken worden gehouden op 17 maart, 'om de feiten te onderzoeken en de noodzakelijke aanbevelingen te maken'.

Strijd tegen het terrorisme

Colombia legt de resolutie positief uit. Volgens het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken is de OAS-commissie geen onderzoek, maar missie om de feiten op een rij te zetten. 'Door deze historische proef te doorstaan heeft de OAS zijn bestaansrecht bewezen.'

Bogotá bood opnieuw excuses aan voor de aanval. De voorzitter van het lagerhuis in Colombia, Oscar Arboleda, zei: 'Het is groot nieuws dat Colombia niet veroordeeld is, want hiermee werd internationaal erkend dat het een strijd tegen terrorisme is.' De leider van het Congres, Nancy Patricia Gutiérrez, riep op tot nauwere banden met de buurlanden om beter uit te leggen wat de binnenlandse situatie is.

Sabotage

'Het lijkt er sterk op dat president Uribe met de moord de gevangenenruil, die dankzij de inspanningen van de Venezolaanse president Chávez op gang was gekomen, heeft willen saboteren. De voorbije maanden wist Chávez al een 7-tal gijzelaars van de FARC vrij te krijgen', schrijft Toon Danhieux in een opiniestuk op MO.be.

'Wat Uribe voorstelt als een militaire overwinning op de FARC is niet meer dan een laffe moord op een onderhandelingsdelegatie en dan nog wel op het territorium van een buurland. Dat alles met de enige bedoeling de tanende invloed van de VS in de regio te vuur en te zwaard te herwinnen.'

During election years we brook a lot of babbling. This year's clueless award goes to John McCain. This guy is starting to make me think he has Alzheimer's. Maybe he just stands out in the Arizona sun too long.  Yes he's got experience and has been around the Washington scene for ages, but that just may be the problem. It's beginning to appear as if he's been there too long. Judging from this video, it's a miracle he can function as a Senator, let alone run the country. Over the weekend Mike Huckabee announced that he'd like to be McCain's running mate. I bet he would. Maybe he sees what I see, a doddering old man that can't keep anything straight. Maybe he hopes McCain will overdose on viagra trying to keep up with his younger wife and then get the job by default. If this is the best the Republicans have to offer they need to hang it up altogether. At least Obama and Clinton are entertaining. McCain's just senile.

DOGGY BEER

An australian compny has come up with a brew for your dog. Don't taste test this for the dog, it's beef flavored. Dog Beer, or DB, was designed by Sydney pet supplies store owner Elise Schumacher.  "I have drunk it. It tastes like beef and smells like beer." OK, it's not something that I'm putting high on my list. Though, it can't be worse than Bud Light. She claims to have sold hundreds of them and it is a booming product in her pet store claiming real beer isn't good for dogs. Her version has no alcohol so you won't be able to get your dog drunk. That's no fun. Half the fun of letting him drink beer is to watch him wobble.

MAN SPITS TO HIS DEATH

And the nominee is: After returning to their hotel from visiting the disco district of the Swiss town of Cadempino, a 29-year old man and his friend decided to have a spitting contest. They wanted to see who could spit the farthest from their balcony. The 29-year old came to the hair-brained conclusion he needed to get a running start to get some extra distance. He didn't stop in time and plunged off the balcony to the street below. He wins! His dying at the hopital officially qualifies him for the coveted Darwin Award. None of the names have been released probably due to embarrassment.

 DONKEY THROWN IN SLAM FOR ASSAULT AND BATTERY

In Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico, a donkey has been thrown in jail for assault! The ass ended up in the drunk tank after it bit and kicked two people. Officer Sinar Gomez said the donkey will remain behind bars until its owner agrees to pay the men's medical bills. "Around here, if someone commits a crime they are jailed," Gomez said, "no matter who they are." Actually I think a donkey is more of a what than a who. The owner, Mauro Gutierrez said he would try to reach a friendly arrangement to pay the men's bills, estimated at $420. The victims said the donkey bit Genaro Vazquez, 63, in the chest on Sunday and then kicked 52-year-old Andres Hernandez as he tried to come to the rescue, fracturing his ankle. What I want to know is what did they do to make it so angry, feed it tequila. It would explain the drunk tank."All of a sudden, the animal was on top of us like it was rabid," Hernandez said. Yep, sounds like tequila. Police said it took a half-dozen men to control the enraged burro. Chiapas police have thrown animals in the slammer before, including a bull that devoured corn crops and destroyed two wooden vending stands in March. I bet they had a tough time getting that one in a cell. In 2006, a dog was locked up for 12 days after biting someone. It appears the local cops spend more time chasing livestock than they do real offenders. At least it cures the hot meals problem.

ART FROM PLASTIC CUTLERY

I have to admit, I've never looked at a spork and thought, could I turn this into a bug. Now I do admit I've looked for bugs where I picked up the spork. 70-year-old Peter Rush makes bug art out of plastic cutlery.  The overhead is cheap, he grabs a handful everytime he goes to McDonalds's and then heats them up, shapes them into what he wants and then paints them. Voila, bug art. "It started a few years ago, when I turned up to do a workshop with children on endangered species," he said, "I had forgotten my materials but noticed the plastic spoon in my tea was bending. I made a stag beetle from it and it proved a great success so, after that, I started making other insects." Rush is from Dorset, England and he has quite a collection of his homemade, plastic creepy crawlers. Certainly art is in the eye of the beholder. Spork art, go figure.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez is in China, explaining to the Chinese how he wants to help them sustain their trade deficit by stamping out protectionist sentiment in the U.S.

The United States and China both need to fend off a troubling rise in economic nationalism in order to keep their economies strong, U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez said on Thursday.

Speaking to business groups in Beijing, Gutierrez said the large U.S. trade deficit with China was feeding into protectionist sentiment but added that steps such as trade legislation aimed at China could only be counterproductive.

Counterproductive for who?  Since China is the one with the huge trade surplus, it could only be counterproductive for them.  It would be a breath of fresh air for the American economy and American manufacturers, but Gutierrez will have none of that.  That's not what he's paid to do.  The Bush administration has been paid by their corporate benefactors to do nothing that will jeopardize their positions in China, so that's exactly the mandate that Gutierrez has been given by his boss. 

"It's no secret that the $256 billion bilateral trade deficit is a concern. It plays right into the hands of those who criticize not just free trade with China, but frankly, free trade in general," Gutierrez said, noting some of the rhetoric surrounding the U.S. presidential election.

"Economic isolationism has proven to be a flawed strategy and we have seen time and time again that protectionism doesn't protect anybody."

This anti-American, blind trade cheerleader is chanting the same tired-out lies that their ilk have been repeating for decades.  Protectionism is the only trade strategy that has been proven to work for America, the strategy we used for the first 170 years of our history to build us into the world's preeminent industrial power and the wealthiest nation on earth.  Tariffs are the only mechanism that offer any hope of protecting us from the parasitic effects of "trade" with grossly overpopulated nations, eager for their bloated labor forces to prey on our market like a plague of locusts descending upon a farmer's crop.  Even the World Trade Organization enforces protectionism for two thirds of its member nations to protect them from the same ravages.  I'm not talking about tariffs applied indisciminately.  What we need is the tariff structure on manufactured goods, indexed to population density, that I proposed in Five Short Blasts.

He (Gutierrez) pointed to the need for better protection of intellectual property rights and greater government transparency -- perennial complaints about China by U.S. firms.

Yeah, that'll really make a big dent in the trade deficit.  This is another tactic employed by blind trade cheerleaders - try to placate the angry mob by making them think you're trying to do something about the problem.  How many years - decades, now approaching a half century - have we been listening to talk about "intellectual property rights" and things like workers' rights and environmental protection?  All of this is designed to fool you into thinking that hope may be just around the corner. 

The United States for its part needs to reassure China that it welcomes investment, given the protectionist signals that have been sent to Beijing through experiences such as Chinese oil firm CNOOC's failed bid to buy Unocal in 2005, Gutierrez said.

Here it comes!  Gutierrez will be on his knees in a minute, begging the Chinese for cash to keep our skid row bum economy going. 

He noted that while U.S. companies had invested more than $22 billion in China, Chinese firms had put just $550 million into the United States, despite many now being flush with cash.

And there it is!  "Waaaah!  Please help us!  We're out of money and you're so rich!  It's just not fair!  We've been so nice to you!  Waaaaah!  Waaaaah!"  Doesn't it just make you sick to see this nation on its knees begging like this?   And, by the way, hasn't Gutierrez just inadvertently debunked the myth that a trade deficit doesn't matter because the money is simply re-invested in America by our trade "partners?"

He also officially launched the implementation of an agreement signed late last year that will allow for Chinese tour groups to travel to the United States, something he said would help trim the trade deficit while enhancing understanding.

The first group of tourists under the program is scheduled to visit the United States in mid-June, coinciding with the fourth round of the bilateral "strategic economic dialogue", to be held in Washington.

And, of course, we can always fall back on using population growth to prop up the economy.  Let's just have China stuff a bunch of money into people's pockets, send them over here, and we'll call them "tourists."  Maybe they are; maybe they will return home.  But call them what you will, it's just that many more people in the U.S.  Does it really matter if they have a visa or green card in their pocket?  You can always count on the federal government to turn to immigration and population growth for an economic pick-me-upper.  Just what we need, more busloads of tourists descending on our national parks, making life that much more miserable for Americans trying to enjoy what little vacation time they get. 

The sooner we rid our leaders of these traitorous stooges of global corporations, the sooner we'll be back on the track to the kind of prosperity we once enjoyed in this country.  The direction of our economy could be turned on a dime by simply returning to the trade policies that made this country great. 

What the hell is going on in the Buckeye State?

After being stripped of his membership in the Democratic Party, Democrats in the Ohio House of Representatives have filed nine articles of impeachment against Attorney General Marc Dann, many of which reportedly point to alleged instances of neglect that legislators identified in Dann's sworn testimony during an investigation into sexual harassment allegations involving former Dann staffers, but not Dann himself.

So far, the nine articles of impeachment involve the fact that Dann admitted to having an affair with a subordinate.

And that ...

• Dann's aide, Anthony Gutierrez is accused of sexual harassment. Gutierrez also is accused of damaging two state vehicles and having them repaired at state expense without filing required accident reports.
• Ed Simpson, the office's chief of policy and administration, is accused of not properly investigating the harassment allegations.
• Dann is also accused of obstructing the sexual-harassment investigation.
• Dann allegedly committed immoral "acts of gross immorality," which he knew or should have known would undermine the effectiveness of the office. WTF does that mean?
• There's no key to exactly what this means, but Dann is accused not performing official duties and he allegedly admitted to not being competent or qualified to perform them.
• Oh yeah - and Dann is accused of making misleading statements under oath and creating a hostile work environment.
  

Is a "misleading statement" the same as a lie? I mean seriously, did he commit perjury? Last time I checked, perjury is an impeachable offense, whereas making "misleading statements" falls far from that mark.

Ohio's GOP deputy chairman Kevin DeWine says Marc Dann has turned the AG's office into "raunchy frat pad." OH REALLY? Because pimply-faced Ohio frat boys often have "extramarital affairs" with subordinates?

[FYI: Kevin DeWine is the jackass who used a video of the burning World Trade Center towers in a 2006 television campaign ad]

Dann's chastisement seems much worse than a double secret probation, because members of his own party are the majority calling for his impeachment with Democratic Governor Ted Strickland out front leading the charge.

[FYI: Governor Strickland's democratic values include being a pro-gun ordained Methodist minister.]

Do any of these allegations really warrant an impeachment hearing? Come on! Ohio has not used the impeachment process since 1820.

I won't be surprised if this sudden rush to impeachyness is discovered to have something to do with Hillary Clinton considering Strickland for veep if she clinches the nomination.

Still.

Something else is at work here. But, what?

Either through luck or good decision making you inherit or stumble across a gem, I will opt for the latter. I made a substitution during the first match, the Master League veteran AMF Minanda was tiring on the 70 minute mark and I went through my substitutes and highlighted was CF Gutierrez who can also play AMF. I have never played him in that position before, fool me. Since that decision he has turned out to be a real star performer for my side in this attacking position.

NAC Breda were my first opponents played on the PSP, as my mrs was watching junk midday tv, loose women or some nonsense like that. I was anxious of a losing start, if I am honest I struggle at times with the PSP controls. I took control of the first half, best chance of the half fell to Ruskin (LMF) after a neat 1-2 between him and Castolo, but he fired wide across the goal. The 2nd half was a midfield battle, Breda came closest with a thunderbolt which literally shook the crossbar. The game finished 0-0, happy with that, especially with my worries regarding the PSP.

I have opted for the default 3-5-2 formation with the default players, with a few tweaks the 2 wing backs (R/L WB) are now R/LMF and one of the DMF is a CMF pushed a little forward. I chose the default formation as the defaults in general are poor at everything, I wanted to crowd the midfield and make me hard to beat, denying COM space to play. Negative? maybe, once I get better players I will probably change to my preferred 4-3-3.

The next 3 games is where Guti (Gutierrez) came into his own, he is a 20 year old Spaniard, like his great namesake of Real Madrid. I played him behind my 2 strikers, being a CF he has a high attack stat, which I have noticed he attacks into the box at every attack. Playing with 5 in the midfield, this is not a problem. He scored in his 1st start against Willem II to level the match, after an Espimas long ranger which the COM GK parried to the side, from a tight angle Guti fired the ball home to square things up. 1-1 final score and a 2nd consecutive draw.

FC Lorient next opponents, they had their own version of a one man team, in 19 year old Nimani. He was too powerful for my fragile defenders, he gave a textbook performance (so the stats said, next to his name at end of match). He scored a hat-trick, all different types of goals, a header, long ranger and a half volley. 3-0 final score, my one highlight came from Guti who fired a half volley against the crossbar from a Ruskin cross.

I have noticed on the PS2 version that the players fatigue levels are not as severe as the PS3 version. Guti has made his 3rd start in-a-row along with 4 other players, this would not have happened on PS3 version.

I made a good start in next match, slicing Vitesse open with neat 1-2s, Castolo came closest, but the COM GK made a fine low diving one handed save. Vitesse took the lead shortly after, but that man Guti scored a fabulous on the run header, running across the defender and stooping to head the ball home across the GK and into the opposite corner. Quality goal, which showed the excellent player animation in this version, I wouldn't have scored a goal like that on PS3.

I felt a little disheartened losing a goal in 1st half injury time from a long range effort, rifled into the corner of the net. Next came another piece of animation I haven't seen in this years PES, Ruskin fired in a cross and Guti attacked ball with his head, the GK came out and clattered him, penalty and red card. Guti dusted himself down and (stood side on to ball) fired home the penalty to level for a 2nd time, 2-2 final score.

Guti has made four appearances and scored 3 goals (all of my goals) from AMF, be interesting to see how he develops as he is still young and has already turned into a valuable member of my team.

As I said in my last post, my objective is not to finish bottom of the league. I am 2 points off bottom place, 4 games away from the much anticipated first negotiation period.

So we've got more idiotic government employees in the news again. And this time, it's a doozy of a story!! Booze, babes, language that'd make a sailor blush! Click here for the story in our own local Columbus Dispatch.

According to the Dispatch, Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann's office cultivated an atmosphere that sounds very similar to the environment one sees in the movie "Animal House", with "... staff members in adjacent work areas shouting obscenities toward each other ..." and "... a casual work environment that often extends into alcohol-lubricated evenings in which work and personal lives blur."

Evidently Marc Dann has a potty-mouth and he encourages those who work with/for him to also have potty-mouths in the workplace. As stated in the Dispatch, "Dann's defenders said the occasional use of profanity is typical for any office environment and that the attorney general is trying to encourage freewheeling dialogue."

And, as one would suspect, this free-wheeling, profanity-laced environment just further illustrates the problems we have when certain morons get into office and abuse their power. As if government's reputation isn't bad enough already - not factoring in the whole nepotism thing, which can sometimes help government - we have Marc Dann hiring his buddy, Anthony Gutierrez, as Dann's general services director.

And evidently Gutierrez likes his booze. So much so that he allegedly came in to work one morning after a rough night of drinking and "... reeked of booze and vomit and boogers or vomit were hanging from his nose." I solemnly swear I will never allow myself to get into a situation where I have hangover boogers or vomit dangling from my nose in public! Gutierrez told a coworker "... that he had been 'so drunk the night before at Easton that on his way home he must have fallen asleep and when he hit the state Suburban on a guardrail, that's when he woke up.' " Again, from today's Dispatch.

Now let me remind you Ohio taxpayers that this exemplary government employee is on PAID suspension while a sexual harassment complaint is investigated. Is anyone surprised that sexual harassment charges came forth from such a "freewheeling" workplace?

The sad thing is that this mess just reinforces my sour view of government employees. And, yes, I am a government employee - I speak from experience here people!

You see, I believe that government tends to attract and retain the most mediocre of workers, because anyone with talent and skill and ambition will eventually tire of the BS one must put up with to get anything done in government and will eventually leave government to find real jobs! Yes, I believe I am a fantastically mediocre employee! In fact, I try to excel in my mediocrity!

But Marc Dann and his minions have taken government employee worthlessness to a whole new level! We've gone well beyond mediocrity here, beyond asininity, beyond laziness! We've reached a new plateau!

What shall we call it?

Male e sempre peggio, concludo inevitabilmente. Male anche quando non siamo turisti per caso, ma viaggiatori benintenzionati e animati dalle migliori motivazioni umanitario-conoscitive. Polli da spennare? Idioti da sposare? Privilegiati di cui prima o poi vendicarsi? Col che, piuttosto che fare quella parte, spesso e (mal)volentieri preferisco starmene a casa.

Ecco come lo scrittore Pedro Juan Gutiérrez ci restituisce il contrasto fra lo sguardo di un cubano e quello di un "turista incauto e immalinconito" che visita L'Avana:
