A mesa redonda Direita e Esquerda Hoje: Teoria Crítica e Pena terá participação de Marcos Nobre (Unicamp/Cebrap), Maíra Machado (Edesp-GV/NDD-Cebrap), José Rodrigo Rodriguez (Edesp-GV/NDDCebrap) e Marta R. A. Machado (Edesp-GV/NDD-Cebrap).

I can't even find anything witty/funny to say about this (though the same could be argued about everything I write). It's just... really, really good. Here's the official synopsis:

Jimbo is 13. All he can think about is one girl, Sarah Jane. And no matter what stands in his way - bullies, violence, chaos, zombies - nothing is going to stop him from finding a way into her world.

Although I think I like DJ's take on it better:

Imagine Harmony Korine’s “Gummo” set inside the world of George Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” with a dash of your first schoolyard crush sprinkled on top. In a nutshell, that’s “I Love Sarah Jane”.

I think a heartfelt round of congratulations are in order to thee Harmony Korine/Larry Clark/Vincen

I think a heartfelt round of congratulations are in order to thee Harmony Korine/Larry Clark/Vincent Gallo Axis: you've proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that American filmmakers who dabble in "existential" cinema are every bit as stupefyingly dull and redundant as their European counterparts. Please, take a bow. Perhaps we should throw Chloe Sevigny in there as well, as she appears to be some kinda "muse" for these rather uninteresting gentlemen-- my dearest darling, no matter how many times you appear naked or perform sadly unimpressive fellatio on one of your cast members' members, you'll never be Uschi Digart. NEVER. For those of you who have no idea what I'm on about... I really don't care.

Regardless, there's seldom soundtracks --if EVER-- that include the likes of Sleep, Bathory, Burzum, Absu or Spazz, let alone all of 'em on one handy shiny disc. So, whomever compiled this collection deserves to be commended, if not the film itself, which is a grainy, fake documentary about youthful rednecks growing up in an Ohio Nowheresville. It's filled to the brim with contrived attempts to shock that will only offend those whose bourgeois sensibilities haven't allowed 'em to discover life beyond thee anonymous suburbs in which they dwell. So be thankful I'm providing the music, not the visuals.

Tracks:

1 Absu - The Gold Torques of Ulaid
2 Eyehategod - Serving Time in the Middle of Nowhere

No spotlight, no audience, no nothing. It's a rainy day and it's filled with anticipation. I was banned from register at my job yesterday, later flashing my lady bits in front of the store during closing. I still have no reason behind that. I wonder if any one realized. I keep peering over at this mini-bagel with sos that my dad put on my stack books on my dresser next to me. The contemplations, the desires, and the not-so-apparent hunger pains. My dad has off work until the day after Memorial day. In return, I think I'll be a not-so-apparent alcoholic. Watered down coffee and a half cleaned room. What am I suppose to do now? I half-did every thing, so I guess my day is done. 1:58 pm, score 0. The bagel is still there, untouched. I can't read books any more, can't finish any thing. I don't even know the point of this. I mean, in time, I'm sure great topics will come about. But why this day? This day is so dreary, so un-exciting until about 7pm, lacking human hygiene, sloppy, and I'm not even stoned yet. Can I say that here?

I discovered a great podcast the other night, subscribe to it on itunes:

radical waterbong feminist revolt!

"there's something enervating to the rat race of daily life in the well spent night of debauchery" -http://sirndipiti.livejournal.com/

Maybe I'll write more later...

There’s unlikely to be a more star-studded film this summer than “Mister Lonely,” which features a motley crew of impersonators playing Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, Abraham Lincoln and Buckwheat, to name a few. The Moment chatted with the director Harmony Korine about everything from the inspiration behind his latest film to the hold that Chicken McNuggets have on his brother and co-writer, Avi, and the special beauty that comes from repulsion. The movie's limited run at the IFC Center ends May 13th.

Tell me how the idea to use impersonators came about.

Everything usually starts with images for me. When I was living in Paris, there was a German Michael Jackson impersonator who lived down the street from me. I used to see him dancing, but he would only do two or three moves, almost like a human loop. It was weird. One night, for whatever reason, I had wrapped myself in tin foil and was wearing a shower cap to keep all my thoughts in. I walked by the guy and just started talking to him, and he told me that he'd actually been in Vietnam or something. The bottom part of his leg had been blown off and he was dancing with a kind of prosthesis.

That seems like a good starting-off point for conversation.

Yeah. And then from there, we just talked about things and I thought it was an interesting idea. He told me some stories about what it's like as an impersonator. And just the image I thought was interesting. I spent years on a commune as a kid and I thought there would be a lot of comic potential in putting all these different icons together.

There are a lot of hysterical — and highly charged — scenarios that take place in your film. I’m thinking, for example, of when the Queen impersonator ends up in bed with the Pope impersonator. Or when several of the characters start yelling, "The Pope stinks!" when they realize he hasn’t taken a bath. Were you knowingly winking to the audience?

I don't really know. I try not to think about things too much. I obviously I think about stuff, but I try not to over think the symbolism of each scene or the kind of metaphors that pop up. If something feels right, if there's something that pulls me in a certain direction, I'll just go with it. So with something like "The Pope stinks," I just started imagining that the real Pope stinks; that he actually might smell bad.

How did you decide where you were going to shoot the film? The castle you used is amazing.

That was in Scotland, by the Isle of Skye, in a town called Plockton. Originally, “Mister Lonely” was written with Iceland in mind. I had taken several trips to Iceland to scout locations. But on the last day I was there, I met this woman. She answered the door wearing a nightgown. There was nothing underneath. And she was like in her mid-40s. She had makeup and she was crying. She took us to her barn and there were three dead black horses that were frozen solid, with their legs sticking straight up in the air. And I don't know — I just got creeped out after that. So we went to Scotland and we found that one place.

You didn't feel like flogging a dead horse?

(Laughs) That's funny. I found out that — it was in the papers actually — that the horses had somehow eaten Anthrax. I guess there was Anthrax in the grass.

(Photo: Ari Marcopoulos)

Was the choice of iconic personalities — Marilyn Monroe, Abraham Lincoln, Madonna — that end up in the film intentional?

Yes and no. I wrote the screenplay with my little brother, Avi. We talked a lot about which people should be impersonated. Obviously, they needed to be instantly recognizable. They had to be iconic. Most importantly, I felt like they had to be people who had a certain kind of a mythology. So I could take certain attributes of the real icon and bleed it into the narrative of the story. I could take something like Marilyn's depression and it becomes part of the story line. Or Chaplin's legendary sadistic streak and put that in the story line. I wanted to kind of play with the myths a little bit. They were also just people that I like. I knew I'd never get to work with The Stooges in real life. Or Buckwheat. I also just liked the idea of waking up every morning and seeing them in front of me.

Did you encounter any trouble getting licensing for songs — let's say, for Michael Jackson? I noticed there was no actual Michael Jackson songs.

Yeah. I didn't even try. I wasn't even going to go there. I thought there's no way I was going to try to start licensing the songs and also I liked the idea of these guys making their own music. He's a Michael Jackson impersonator, but he's slightly off, you know?

I think there's someone particularly intriguing about celebrities like Michael Jackson, perhaps even more so than someone like Marilyn Monroe who is actually dead, who no longer actively participate in their own mythology. Their lives, or myths rather, are now up for grabs for any of us to play around with.

Yeah. It’s good to take some creative control over them. (Laughs)

What was it like working with your brother?

I had never written with someone before. Because I hadn't done it, I didn't think I was capable of writing any more or if my brain would work in that way. He's a couple of years younger than me, so it was good. I always talk about it, but I had to bribe him with Chicken McNuggets. Even when he was young, that was the only thing that would placate him.

Dark or white meat?

No, the white meat. But it was also the special honey sauce that he was addicted to. They discontinued the honey, but we tracked down the manufacturer in Delaware and he came down. (Laughs)

I remember in an earlier film you did, "Gummo," there is a scene where one of the characters drops a chocolate bar in a bathtub.

Oh, yes. That's right.

That scene has always stuck in my head as something that really grossed me out, but in a great way. It reminded me of the scene in "Mister Lonely" where Marilyn Monroe is horribly sunburnt and Charlie Chaplin begins to rub his face against her burnt body.

Yeah. (Laughs)

You are the master of being disgusting in the most delicate ways.

Yeah, I work hard for that. (Laughs) Well, it’s exactly what you said. I just go for things. I just kind of go for it. I've actually seen a scene very similar to that in a different movie; I kind of always thought it would be interesting to incorporate that. I like when you feel something but feel a little guilty about it. I always feel that movies show most things so one way, but I've never felt that about life. In life, you can be attracted and disgusted to something.

How was working with Werner Herzog?

Werner is a friend of mine, somebody who I became friends with after I made "Gummo." We have made films together. I made the last one he was in. And on this one, it was pretty simple: I just called him up and asked him if he wanted to do it.

I have to ask: How did you get those nuns to fly? (Laughs)

(Laughs) That's a secret, I can't tell you. That was a pretty intense shoot. I tracked down real nuns. All but one of the nuns jumping was an actual nun. And it was really hot, like 120 degrees, and all the people were eating cheese pizzas. So, on like the fourth day, I was starting to hallucinate with these nuns flying and cameramen jumping out with cameras on their head. It was pretty, yeah, that was pretty insane. (Laughs)

Tell me a little bit about working with Agnes B.

Agnes is a very close friend and we have a production company together, O Salvation. This is the first big feature film that we've done together. And it was something that we started right after my last movie. Basically, she just helps get the ball rolling.

She's your nun.

Yeah, I would say that.	(Laughs)

I guess at this point I would consider myself a Harmony Korine fan. Though films like Gummo and Julien Donkey Boy are uncomfortably awkward and disturbing, theres something about his work that demands attention. Besides the man know how to keep company, he has worked with the likes of Larry Clark, Chloe Sevigny, and Will Oldham. He also notably wrote the lyrics to the song "Harm Of Will" of off Bjork's Vespertine about Oldham. So it stands to reason that his new flick, Mister Lonely will at least be worth a viewing. Check out the trailer:

i have enjoyed the work of harmony korine since i first became aware of him with kids which he wrote the script for. gummo was an acquired taste which i loved not just for it's weirdness but for the resonant emotional core that typifies all his work. next came julien donkey boy -- another challenging piece of cinema that engages the viewer in a way that not many films are capable of.

i was curious what he was up to now and google delivered -- his new film is called mr lonely and it sounds intriguing. here is the blurb from the website:

an audacious and visually playful love story set in the world of celebrity impersonators. a michale jackson impersonator lives alone in paris and performs on the streets to make ends meet. at a show in a retirement home, michael falls for a beautiful marilyn monrie look-alike who suggests he move to a commune of impersonators in the scottish highlands. at the seaside castle Michael discovers everyone is preparing for the commune's first ever gala - abe lincoln, little red riding hood, the three stooges, the queen, the pope, madonna, buckwheat, sammy davis jr ... as well as marilyn's daughter shirley temple and her possessive husband charlie chaplin. meanwhile a miracle is happening in a latin american jungle ...
poignant and whimsical in turn, mister lonely shows harmony korine at the top of his game. mister lonely is stunningly shot by cinematographer and prodigy Marcel Zyskind (a mighty heart, code 46, in this world) and features extraordinary performances by samantha morton, diego luna, werner herzog, anita pallenberg and james fox (together for the first time on screen since performance) soundtrack featuring jason spaceman and the sun city girls.

The 80th Academy Awards took place last Sunday (February 24th, 2008) and once again I did not watch them. In all honesty, I can't remember the last time I watched them. Probably it was when I had my stupid little crush on Anna Paquin (like I wrote about here) so that was 10-11 years ago.

It's not that I don't like movies as I watch them quite often. I'm not anti-Hollywood either and don't only watch indie flicks like Gummo. I just hate awards ceremonies. The last awards ceremony I watched was probably the MTV Music Awards and I believe that it was 1993 as Aerosmith's "Get a Grip" album was nominated for many awards.

For me, the Oscars are not about the films but for the people who were involved, mostly the actors and actresses, to show off how pretty they look. It's almost like graduating from High School: Most people don't give a shit about the hard work or cheating they did to graduate but rather about how pretty they look and how they are going to get shitfaced afterwards.

Also it might be because movies are so easy to watch before they even are released on DVD that part of the magic is gone. Wired.com recently had an article about how "148 out of the 151 films selected for an Academy Award from 2003 to 2007 have cropped up online".

It might just be that I've been really enjoying the low-res opening credits of TV show Californication for the past few nights, but I love these images by Juergen Teller for fashion label Marc Jacobs. Who cares about the clothes, feel the love!

The guy in the pic is Harmony Korine, which gives the campaign an extra layer of referential-ness (I made that word up) for me. Korine is a very off-beat director, writer and all-round interesting person. The only film of his I've seen is Gummo, which was a mix of polaroid, super8 and film.

And now I think I'll go and lay a flower out for my polaroid camera to mourn the death of polaroid film and all those wonderful instant moments it's given us.

I

So I was having a small conversation with some people about Halloween movies and someone had heard about Bambi being on the list of the scariest movies ever. I'm sorry but I almost lost it. Where to start. People are insane! I can't really even go into how stupid this is. Instead I am going to make my own list.

I would have to say my top 10 scariest movies ever would be...

10. Halloween

9. Carrie

8. Dawn Of the Dead

7. House of 1000 Corpses

6. Nightmare on Elm Street

5. Mothman Prophecies

4. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

3. The People Under The Stairs

2. The Exorcists

1. Gummo

What are your top 10?

Aldri.

I'm heading out to Barrier for the next couple of days to work in the mountains , hopefully I can come up with something good to write about. I was thinking maybe a short story about a militia bake sale to raise money for new weapons , someone makes negative comment about a lovely lady's rice krispy squares , husband pulls gun to defend wife's honour and a Jacob Reynolds look alike gets shot.

Sounds like a good one to me.
