Guitar Hero: On Tour (GHOT) is the latest installment in the Guitar Hero series and the first proper version for a handheld console (there is also GH Caribiner and GH3 for Mobiles). To bring some people who don't know about Guitar Hero up to speed, it is best described as a rhythm game that (on the console versions) involves using a plastic guitar to play notes that scroll down the screen on the 'note highway'. This version of GH for DS is a little different then the console versions. Instead of a plastic guitar there is the 'guitar grip' peripheral that is bundled with the game and is required to play it.

Inside the cardboard box is the guitar grip peripheral (with guitar pick stylus and adjustable strap), game cartridge which is in it's own small case a bit larger then the cartridge itself, game manual, guitar grip manual, original DS adapter, two sticker sheets and the all important health and safety warning booklet, which is almost worth reading, considering how you hands can be hurt from the guitar grip. :P

The guitar grip plugs into the GBA slot of the Nintendo DS and works on both the original Nintendo DS and the DS Lite, both have different adapters that can be interchanged with each other. The guitar grip is made out of plastic with a smooth curved cover. Between the guitar grip itself and the plastic cover is a thin plastic 'skin' which can be changed with different designs. It covers most of the front and bottom of the DS making it about twice as thick. The grip has a Velcro strap which is supposed to provide more stability. Toward the front of the Grip is four buttons which are used as the frets of the guitar. When connected to a DS it is held with your left hand (if you are right handed) and the DS is held so it opens like a book. On top of the grip is a small slot which fits the included pick stylus which is slightly larger then a regular guitar pick with a plastic tip that is safe to use on the DS's touch screen.

The grip doesn't feel flimsy and is pretty light. To hold, it's not very comfortable but it isn't painful/annoying either. The adjustable strap works fine, but if it's too tight it can restrict hand movement and then give you hand cramps. After prolonged use the grip can really hurt your hands, even after one song on Expert mode, which is obviously why there is a warning screen first thing when you launch the game. The guitar grip fits into an original style DS fine with an adapter and stays in well and requires significant force to take out, so it won't be a hassle in game on an original DS. However when testing it in a DS Lite (obviously with the DS Lite adapter) it came out too easily. If my hands were any larger it would be a miracle to play a song without it grip coming out which is totally unacceptable. Functionally in the game it works fine, buttons press fine, the game detects all button presses and all four buttons can be pressed down and all be detected at one time.

Time for the DS game itself. Guitar Hero: On Tour is essentially a port of the console versions of Guitar Hero III with one major exception; the fifth fret is missing. I feel that this a good move, having to move your fingers up and down the DS would just be way too hard and put too much strain on your hands. Star power is still here (which is good :P) but requires you to practically shout into the DS microphone to activate it, or press A, B, X, Y or a button on the D-pad or touch the star power meter on the touch screen. On the top screen there is the usual note highway and background with your band performing. On the touch screen is an image of your guitar, score, rock meter, star power meter and note odometer which appears after 40 straight notes hit. The menu system is simple and looks good. The games graphics are excellent for a DS game and runs at a smooth, constant frame rate which is essential for a game of this type. The setlist is average, only 26 songs, most of them are average. The sound quality is good for a DS, not great but at least you can still make out the song but I do recommend you use headphones. The Single Player modes are as follows: Career, Guitar Duels, Quickplay, Practise, Tutorial. Career involves making a band name and playing through all the songs, earning money to buy guitars, guitar designs and character outfits. Guitar Duels are a new feature. You play through the songs versus a CPU player. Instead of having star power you have battle items which are picked up by playing a full sequence of battle gems. The items can do things such as light you opponents guitar on fire from a botched pyrotechnic, cause an overexcited fan to shove a piece of paper over your guitar until you sign it with some random scribble, break a string and increase the difficulty. With these battle items you try to make your opponent stuff up so you can get as many points as possible, most points wins. Quickplay; play already unlocked songs. Practise; practise certain parts of songs without failing and you can also play a Bass Guitar track. Tutorials show you how yo play the game, about Star Power, Guitar Duels and Hammer-on and Pull-off notes. There is a local Multiplayer mode that I haven't been able to test yet.

Overall, the game is great fun, good graphics and game play. Its just a shame they nearly ruined it with a crap guitar grip (in the DS Lite, original DS is fine) and sore hands.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is the first GH game focusing on one band or artist.  Following their rise to fame, the game takes you back to high school for Aerosmith's early days up too their biggest hits of recent years.  On the way there are plenty of non-Aerosmith songs to aid the variation without straying too far from the vision of keeping it about one band.  Personally, I'm not an Aerosmith fan and there isn't enough in this GH3 spin off to make me buy it.  Maybe I will rent it, and see If I change my mind.

Guitar Hero: On Tour is the breakaway venture taking the GH franchise to the handheld devices.  Designed for the Nintendo DS, the revolutionary "guitar grip" attachment allows for mobile shredding.  I got my hands on one of these today in a Gaming Shop, and it isnt as gimmicky as it sounds/looks but god forbid you be left handed!

These two new games are a sign that Guitar Hero is not going to fold to Rock Band's pressure.  In fact, this is just the beginning.  The next installment will of course be Guitar Hero World Tour.  A sublime leap forward for console rhythm gaming.  I was all set to go out and purchase an XBox 360 just so i could get Rock Band (it is only available on the 360 in the UK at the moment!) but before I could relieve myself of £189 ($300+) plus the price of another game console, I read about GH:WT!  I will be saving my hard earned cash and purchasing the superior music/rhythm game. (Editor's Note: Rock Band 2 doesn't look half bad either)

These two new games are a sign that Guitar Hero is not going to fold to Rock Band's pressure.

Also, not content with trying to overtake Rock Band, GH:Aerosmith and GH:On Tour will be actually heading out on tour with the "American Idols" in the coming months.  And Rolling along for the ride will be the demo version of World Tour!  With Rock Band appearing at various festivals across the US this summer, has GH taken it one step further and actually joined a "tour" albeit not a world one?

Its a tough choice ahead for those of you who already own Rock Band.  I mean come on, be realistic - how many plastic based peripherals do I "actually" have the room for?   In fact - that sounds like a whole other discussion to me!

Y leyendo me he encontrado que en la primera quincena de Julio, tenemos dos avances en cuanto a "geekismo".

• El 11 de Julio sale a la venta el iPhone 3G, por lo menos en los Estados Unidos, al precio de 199$ que doy gracias por ser Europeo, ya que con el cambio de moneda  sale por mas o menos 150 "eulos", y da la casualidad que el 18 estoy por aquellos lares, asique si no se agotan (posibilidad muy alta) vendré a España, si hay suerte, con uno bajo el brazo.

• El 18 de Julio tenemos un nuevo juego puntero para la DS, se trata del Guitar Hero On Tour, la adaptación del famoso juego para la portátil de Nintendo; viene con un periférico con los ya conocidos botones de colores que se adapta a la consola, y una púa táctil para rasguear las cuerdas de tu pantalla táctil.

Aquí os dejo con éstos dos productos la mar de sugerentes para pasar un verano más geek si cabe... ;)

As soon as we got home, I was about to install Spore...but then I found out that my hard drive only have 5Gig of free space (my total space is 80Gig)... so i tried deleting stuff, and at the same time I called my cousin who was in Low Yat to ask him to help buy me another external drive for my pix and videos (from January 08 up to now, there's about 7 gig... around 1.something Gig a month of piccies XD) but he couldn't find any at a reasonable price... in Low Yat??? i dunno... so weird wan, all so expensive. anyone know what a reasonable price for 250 Gig is? Portability is a must.

So after so much deleting and removing programs, i finally freed up only about 4 gig. Then I realized, I forgot to empty the recycle bin... (GG!!!!) So now I have 19.5Gig free space (my bin can hold that much?? or glitch? O.o ) and I can install my Spore AND my Neverwinter Nights Gold!! <3 The Sims can wait, I think.

And while waiting for my Spore to install, I had a go at my Guitar Hero skills =P

I love Guitar Hero. The songs in this particular version are a good selection, and the playing style is unique. However, I find myself unable to play this for very long at a time, because...

• I keep reminding myself that there are only 25 songs (in 4 different modes, one of which i will never touch [Easy])
• My wrist hurts after a while (despite spending 5 minutes just trying to find a comfortable position to strum
• My back hurts (from hunching periodically AFTER I've found the most comfortable position to strum)
• The screen is tiny for strumming (never realized..) and I miss notes often in the more difficult/fast songs. Also because of this..
• One run through of a 4 minute song in Expert Mode and the lower part of my wrist begins to lose all sensation.

However, for the first 30 minutes of playtime, the game totally rocked. =) Great for travelling and freaking everyone else out.

Pra PC eu não sei como tava antes, mas continua com o Guitar Zero e o Frets On Fire.

No Guitar Zero tem vários arquivos que devem ser feitos os downloads e tem que ler bem pra fazer funcionar tudo. Já fizemos um post falando sobre ele anteriormente.

Já no Frets On Fire, no site diz que está na versão 1.2.512 e tem um link com as alterações feitas no programa. Os 2 são gratuitos e uma novidade no Frets é que tem um ítem no site chamado "Bonus Content" onde tem alguns links para comunidades e tal e 2 bandas que colocaram materiais em seus sites para o jogo. Tudo Free.

Bom, mas isso não é nada novo, então vamos aos atuais! Guitar Hero: On Tour e Guitar Hero Mobile.

Guitar Hero: On Tour é para Nintendo DS e é muito legal, gostei mais do modo "contra"... Me deu até vontade de comprar um pra jogar contra o Josué! :-). Mas enfim, o sistema vem com um adaptador que se acopla ao DS e uma palheta para tocar na tela.

Olha de todas as versões de Guitar Hero essa foi a que mais me deu vontade de tocar, pois sou guitarrista e essa se aproxima mais que qualquer outra. O modo de jogar nos consoles com as "guitarras" para ele não é nem um pouco legal, fica muito falso. Quando lançarem a versão que permita uma guitarra USB ser utilizada com certeza eu compro.

Mas voltando, coloquei um vídeo no final do post para darem uma olhada.

Agora vamos falar do Guitar Hero Mobile. Esse eu não vejo a hora de conseguir para o meu celular (acho brabo). Até agora não achei em nenhum lugar para vender aqui no Brasil, então o jeito é atucanar as operadoras e esperar. Mas o jogo é muito legal e ficou muito igual ao do console.

Já falamos sobre ele aqui no Guri de Apê. O jogo é feito em parceria pela Activision e a Hands-On mobile e é muito legal. O game vem com 15 faixas e + 3 são lançadas a cada mês. Saca só o "Setlist" inicial.

We talked about it on the newest Podcast, Retail Gamers Episode: 003, but Guitar Hero: On Tour will be coming out on, 6/22/08.  The device is pretty slick and I definitely want to try it out.

If you head on over to the official site, Guitar Hero: On Tour.  They have some great demos of how this thing will actually work.  I personally liked the real time 3-D demo of the unit going into and attaching to the DS itself.  They also have a great video of some, 'super cool kids,' rocking out with the game.  It shows how you hold it and play the game.

I personally hope this will work out.  A hand held guitar hero sounded like a joke but after poking around the official site and seeing more footage of the game I find myself even more interested then before.  Below is a pretty amusing, 'How to' video on the whole package that is Guitar Hero: On Tour.  Check it out and tell us what you think.

"Guitar Hero World Tour" incluirá a possibilidade para dois grupos de quatro pessoas cada competirem online, assim como possibilitará aos jogadores comporem suas próprias músicas, afirmou a Activision, na terça-feira (10).

O jogo terá músicas de bandas como Van Halen, The Eagles, Linkin Park e Sublime, com todas as faixas sendo extraídas de originais, diferentemente dos jogos passados onde muitas músicas eram versões cover.

Previsto para o final do ano, o jogo marcará uma nova direção para a franquia "Guitar Hero", onde os jogadores apertam botões coloridos em um controle em formato de guitarra para tocar as notas que aparecem na tela.

"Eu acho certamente que isto tira a força do 'Rock Band"', disse Mike Hickley, um analista da Janco Partners. "O que o 'Rock Band' fará agora, acrescentar flauta e banjo?", indagou.

A franquia de grande lucros da Activision teve seu primeiro concorrente real em novembro, quando a MTV lançou o "Rock Band", no qual possui bateria e microfone, além da guitarra.

A série "Guitar Hero" já arrecadou mais de 1 bilhão de dólares para a Activision e ajudou a elevar em 72 por cento o valor das ações da empresa nos últimos 12 meses.

Isso se compara a uma performance praticamente estável das ações da principal rival da Activision, a Eletronic Arts, que distribui o "Rock Band" para a MTV.

A Activision não divulgou quanto custará o novo jogo. "Guitar Hero 3", que é vendido acompanhado de um controle-guitarra sem fio, custa 90 dólares. "Rock Band", que vem com uma guitarra, bateria e microfone, é vendido por 170 dólares.

"World Tour" será o terceiro "Guitar Hero" lançado este ano. O game virá para Xbox 360, Wii e PlayStation 3 e 2.

• Even before Guitar Hero: Aerosmith has been released [June 29], Activision has already announced, and confirmed, that they are in the making of Guitar Hero: Metallica, which is set to be released in Quarter 1 of 2009. In addition to this, they've also announced that within the fiscal year of 2009, they'll be releasing Guitar Hero: On Tour for the DS, and Guitar Hero IV across multiple platforms.

• Nintendo has been running with supply shortages on everything, from the Wii system itself, to it's latest release, Wii Fit. Unfortunately, reports have shown that this shortage, at least in the U.S., are intentional. Since the dollar has a weaker value than the euro at the moment, Nintendo is shipping most of it's Wii Fit units to Europe instead of to the U.S.

• Not even a year after it's release, Infinity Ward announced that they have sold over 10 million copies of Call of Duty 4 worldwide, with the Xbox 360 version being it's top seller.

• Former Minnesota Timberwolf and now Boston Celtic Kevin Garnett was announced to be the cover athlete for NBA 2K9 this fall. This announcement was made right before the beginning of the NBA Finals Game 1 earlier this week.

• According to reports across the board, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures has become the biggest MMO launch since World of Warcraft. The latest announcement that Funcom released stated that they had shipped one million units worldwide. This doesn't mean one million subscribers, but rather units shipped to retailers.

• Once again, Electronic Arts has postponed it's Take-Two takeover. It seems, though, that there might finally be a deadline for when they can make this hostile takeover. At the earliest, this means that July 18th would be when EA can make their first move towards taking Take-Two over.

We know, we've devoted so many posts to this topic, but there is just so much on it that keeps coming out. Today for instance, Gamedaily.com is reporting that not only is there a Guitar Hero On Tour (DS version) and Aerosmith version (both covered here), along with a regular Guitar Hero 4/ World Tour; there is actually a Guitar Hero Metallica planned for next year as well. Activision hasn't officially announced this, and therefore we don't have much details, but we can assume that it is going to be modeled in some way after the Aerosmith version coming at the end of this month.

A big question that we do have on this though is how will the launch of Guitar Hero 4 affect this version; are we going to see drums and a mic here as well?

Yo no se ustedes pero este es el video mas gay y asqueroso que he visto en mi vida, no se que pensaron al lanzarlo; Pero bueno, hablando del juego, su gameplay luce prometedor, aunque el numero de canciones es muy triste y posiblemente la calidad del sonido tambien los sea. Hola gente, aqui teneis un video demostrativo de como se va a usar guitar hero: on tour para la portatil de nintendo. La verdad es que la franquicia guitar hero está teniendo muchísimo éxito desde la salida de la primera versíon y cada vez salen nuevas ediciones para distintas consolas.

Yo veo algo incomódo jugar a este titulo en la nintendo ds, por lo menos por lo que se ve en el video, pero mejor juzgad por vosotros mismos.

• The Entertainment Software Association, or ESA, has been losing a lot of it's members lately, starting with Activision and Vivendi, soon after being joined by LucasArts and id Software. Reasons have been given, ranging from rising membership fees to issues with the association's president.

• Rumors have been confirmed: Call of Duty 5 will be called Call of Duty World at War, and will, once again, go back to the days of World War II. They're planning on using battles not often used in the WWII age. For the 360, you will also be able to have four-player co-op campaign. CoD:WaW is set to be released this holiday season on every system.

• Guitar Hero: On Tour, the DS version of Guitar Hero, is set to come out on June 22nd, but not only might you be able to get just the game, but you can also get your hands on a special edition bundle. This bundle includes a silver and black DS with the Guitar Hero logo on it, also with Guitar Hero: On Tour. The bundle was initially listed at being priced at $180.

• Electronic Arts is now being sued by another party, this time your everyday game player is taking a shot. Football game players in DC and California have filed a suit against EA stating that they are making an anticompetitive market in the football genre, a monopoly. EA currently owns exclusive rights to make games based off of the NFL, Arena Football, and NCAA Football. The suit states that they lowered the price to be competitive when Take-Two, currently trying to be bought out by EA, released NFL 2K games, but when Take-Two didn't release an NFL 2K game, EA raised the price of Madden back up to standard price. The lawsuit is asking for restitution and damages for all who bought an EA football game since August of 2005.
