According to this post on BerryReview, a RIM spokesperson has said that the new BlackBerry 4.5 operating system will be released to all carriers within two weeks. Sadly, this doesn't mean that we will get the official releases in two weeks, it just means that the carrier will have it for testing purposes. A few carriers have released official versions, but those carriers only have GSM OS's, not CDMA for us using Verizon, Sprint, or Alltel. I'll be sure to post if any new info comes up!

It's been almost a week and I must say that the hype the Nokia E-71 is generating is for good reason. The phone is sleek with its mostly metal exterior and thin at only 10mm. Yet the phone packs a 3.2MP camera with video recording capability, music/video player, Wi-Fi, GPS, 2.4" screen @ 16 million colors, and last but not least full QWERTY keyboard. But the question that comes to mind, "Does this phone excel in all those categories?" After all it is an E-series focused mainly on business consumers/needs. Let's find out.

Design:
The E-71 is one of Nokia's newest and highly anticipated handset devices to hit the market. Aimed primarily at business users the E-71 was jointly released with the E66 (a non-qwerty device with sliding form factor) in June of 2008. The E-71 has had a dominating presence on the internet prior to its release in the form of spy shots that made Nokia fanatics and Symbian addicts drool. As time came closer for its release and hands on reviews appeared online, it was unanimous that the E-71 was a force to be reckoned with. This is what the community had been asking for. The exterior of the phone is something that has to be witnessed in person to truly appreciate its beauty. The choice to construct the E-71 with metal exterior pieces makes the phone look and feel like something special. The phone is primarily made up of steel while adding a solid feel does contribute to the weight of the phone. When handled it feels rather heavy, but in a good way. Along the top portion of the device resides a single speaker and power button (colored red). The left side of the device houses the IR port, microSD slot and microUSB port. The right side houses the 2.5mm stereo jack, volume rockers that sandwich a third voice button. The bottom of the device houses the charging port. This phone is one of the sturdiest units that I have used in recent years and it makes me think how I ever was satisfied with something that was constructed completely from plastic (sorry N95, N82, BlackJack 1 and 2 ). There are absolutely no creaks in this device regardless of what kind of pressure is applied. Since the phone is metal the body of the device does tend to attract a lot of oils and fingerprints. But it’s nothing that can't be wiped down. Fortunately, Nokia did include a nice leather pouch that protects the exterior from dings and scratches and the interior of the pouch is a suede material that is supposed to wipe the surfaces clean but not very effective. The unit is firm and I hope that Nokia continues to use these types of materials in their future releases.

Display:
The E-71 offers a 2.4" display with 16million colors. Although the screen is small the colors produced are vivid and bright. While the resolution and screen orientation makes text and web pages a joy to read. For the first time since using a BlackJack the internet seems to work well on a phone. The screen sits flush with the rest of the phone making it prone to scratches and oils. I have not personally experienced scratching since I am using the included leather pouch, but I would highly recommend that a screen protector be used with this device. In direct sunlight the display suffers from colors becoming extremely washed out. But as with other Nokia's this is nothing new and is a common occurrence.

Comparing the brightness to the N95 the E71 seemed to hold its own. If there is a difference between the brightness it is very minuscule and I could not notice it.

QWERTY KEYBOARD:
The E71's main appeal for many users will be the qwerty keyboard. The construction of the keyboard feels great with the keys feeling soft but not gummy. The keys are not individual pieces but are a one piece overlay. The top part flexes when pressure is applied and I’m not sure if this is a defect or all E-71’s come this way. I will be able to update this portion when my E-71-2 arrives later this week. It’s not a big deal but it is one of the first things I did notice. Since using the E-71 for a week exclusively I thought I would be used to mashing out texts without making mistakes. But I still find myself making mistakes when typing texts. It usually doesn't take too much time getting used to a QWERTY keyboard but in the case of the E-71 I don't think adapting is the issue. Although well designed and in proportion with the phone, the keyboard is simply too small (but not small to the point of being uncomfortable). I don't have large hands and I still find it difficult to type. Overall, I found that with the addition of the keyboard I had better/longer internet sessions and texting was more of a pleasure rather than a chore. Typing definitely became fun!

Lastly, the E-71 adds a little twist to the D-pad design that has been used on more recent Nokia devices (N82, N78, N81) by adding an active light that pulses. This light surrounds the inner edge of the D-pad and depending on the situation the light will pulse slowly when in stand-by mode or rapidly when there has been a missed call, new voicemail, new text or new email. While the idea is good, I wish that Nokia included more customization options such as color (different color for missed calls, new texts, etc.) and different pulsing options. But, in spite of its simplicity I love the feature and it makes the phone interesting even when not in use.

The E-71 packs quite a punch when processing power is concerned. The unit speeds through applications and has little problems, even when tested with intense tasks such as surfing the internet. I never realized how under powered the N95-1 was until I started using this device. I thought that N95-1 was good, but now....... I don't think ill ever be able to go back. :) I have yet to run into issues where the unit is choking for more memory / CPU. One thing to note is that the unit does not come with a dedicated 3D accelerator like the N95 so the phone will not handle 3D applications as well. I have not installed 3D games into the device but a trial of Global Race is included and plays well.

Software:
The E-71 packs a new interface that is familiar yet different. The visuals are simple yet the menu system is deep. Since this is a business phone the preloaded applications are immense and meant for productivity. I will hit on this in a second review reserved exclusively for the software but will go over a general overview of some of the key software bundled with the E-71. Email is an important to any user these days and the E-71 does not disappoint. The E-71 offers an email set up wizard that will set up most types of Email accounts. I chose to test the application with Gmail and was downloading my inbox to the phone within a matter of minutes. But for businesses users that require the E-71 is ready to accomidate and has those settings available (IMAP, Push, etc). The phone also comes with security software that allows for the phone to be remotely locked (in case of theft or loss) and encryption of phone/memory card data. Quickoffice version 4.1.35 comes loaded and allows not only for viewing of documents, worksheets, and presentations but also creation of these documents from scratch. The home screen has also been tweaked offering more notifications from home screen. With the format of the screen permanently landscape many of the S60 programs have been optimized to take advantage of this. Most applications including alarm clock and calendar offer a split screen view that offers more information to be displayed and makes for a better experience.

Camera: The E-71 comes equipped with a 3.2 MP with auto focus and flash. While Nokia has had great success with picture quality in the past with various N-series devices, the E-71 does not live up to the standards. During daylight shots the picture quality is acceptable but not exceptional by any means (some have complained of a purple hue). For night shots and low light environments the phone just isn't worth bringing out (grainy and the capture quality is not presentable). While this could be expected from a business phone it still would have been nice to have a camera that shot well during the day. As for video the 640x480 @ 22fps is not acceptable. In low data environments (areas where there aren’t much sounds or movement) the phone records well. But in a realistic environment the video is terrible and jittery. As a note the E-71 does not include any type of photo/video editing software. All images must be downloaded to PC in order to be resized, adjusted, etc. Some of the issues could possibly be fixed in a future firmware update, but I won't hold my breath.
But having an adapter sticking out of the phone for some is just not an option.
Web: Using the E-71 for the internet is an amazing experience. The web pages look natural in the landscape 320x240 screen and the keyboard is always available for fast navigation. The E-71 does support flash so you will be able to browse all your favorite flash enabled sites like YouTube. Although not the fastest, the video from YouTube loaded and played well, only sometimes experiencing hiccups. I have grown on the E-71 and find myself not relying on a PC anymore. If I need to go online I will pick up the E-71 rather than turn on the PC.
GPS: The unit comes equipped with internal GPS that usually locks in under 15seconds. The included map software (Nokia Maps) runs flawlessly/quickly thanks to the extra CPU and memory. I tested out the GPS with GoogleMaps and the E-71 had no issues with getting a signal. Overall the experience is similar to that of the N82 but with much faster load times of the programs themselves.Call Quality: The E-71's audio quality during a call was good and the volume was good but not loud. The one thing I did notice while using the phone is that it experiences a lot of signal loss. I tested this around this city thinking it may just be an issue with my area, but in all areas the reception tended to go from full to half signal sometimes even to a single bar. I don't know if this is a general experience or just my model, but I suspect that the exterior metal casing might be a contributing factor. The phone is rated to get over 10 hours of talk time on a single charge. I wasn't able to verify this since I don't talk that much, but I can say that phone lasted with heavy use of internet, messaging and Wi-Fi 2 and 3/4 days.

Conclusion:
The E-71 is a great phone, even though it might not be the most ideal choice for someone that is concerned with great photo quality it sure does a good job of compacting all the features into a slim body. The construction of the phone is beyond excellent and the large battery allows for long use (this can be appreciated by almost anyone, who doesn't want more time with less charge). The OS is familiar yet includes many new security/business applications as well as some cosmetic changes/simple customizations for the E71. This phone will be a hot seller this summer and the impending release of the E71-2 for the U.S. market (Update: Units began shipping from various retailers and initial shipments are sold out!!!!) will make this a popular phone for North Americans and world. One can only hope that in the future Nokia will be able to incorporate the same style but with true N-series innards to create the perfect phone. But one can only hope and for now be content with the Nokia E-71.

Here's something else that was really useful until it got disbanded and cut in half (just like Dante, Vmap etc). Once upon a time you could dial a number and receive detailed information on coverage upgrades around the UK.

Then, for some reason (cutbacks probably) the service was no longer offered.

Now we know that Vodafone are looking at the site - Hiya - so we'd like to ask you to email us at the usual address (the one we emailed you from!) and let us know if there is a way of receiving this document still? Ok so we may have been the only people in the UK to actually use it, but it's stuff we love.

Update (well sort of)

We've just found this update from 1999 - yes nearly 10 ruddy years ago.

It made us chuckle!

Why?

Well, because it talks about TACS.

Oh how we laughed :D

[caption id="attachment_119" align="alignleft" width="210" caption="Appel national a 150 F"][/caption]

While I still have not posted a review of the iPhone 3G, or my thoughts on whether or not it is a useful tool for the aid community (I do!), I have already stated that Nokia phones enjoy massive penetration within the aid community and therefore deserve a lot of air time.

Matthew Miller has an extensive review of the new Nokia E71 over at his ZDNet blog site, The Mobile Gadgeteer. As do the folks over at Engadget Mobile who took that pic up top. If you are a gadget person you'll love all the info.

With A-GPS, a QWERTY keyboard and quad band GSM what is there not to love about the E71? I did hear some very mixed reviews of previous incarnations of this phone (fragile, weak volume levels, etc.) from some of my fellow field folk but perhaps they have sorted out these issues in latest version. My old Nokia E70 is still the greatest phone I have ever owned so I've got a sweet spot for this series.

I stumbled upon reading a few articles that Telus and Bell are working together to build some kind of a special overlay network that will replace the dominant CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) network it has for years. Instead, they are opting for GSM, a worldwide standard already used be rival network, Rogers. It's only a matter time if Bell and Telus will start the process of converting their networks into the GSM, which means better coverage not just Canada, but all around the world.

Initially, Bell and Telus would have stayed put for keeping it's CDMA and going for the 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) that American carrier Verizon wireless plans to deploy, but Telus and Bell will go for GSM instead. As this article states, both companies will use their "spectrum licences" they had won from the Canadian wireless spectrum auction.

So what does it mean to the average cell phone user with Telus and Bell? More access to enhanced coverage all over Canada and the ability to roam with one phone number (or something like that). What's more, in preparation for the 2010 winter olympics in Vancouver, a number of GSM handsets will be carried around by people visiting the city. It would mean more revenue for the company and other things in between.

As for myself (and a number of many people who are still tied to our CDMA handsets), as the old saying goes - NO COMMENT! Here are the winners of the Wireless Spectrum Auction (courtesy of this link):

Globalive Communications Corp. ($442,099,000 in 30 licences): Canada's newest "national" wireless carrier emerges from the spectrum auction with a wireless presence in all Canadian provinces and territories.

Quebecor Inc. ($554,549,000 in 17 licences): Quebecor's Videotron unit was successful in outbidding all other participants for the majority of licences within its home territory of Quebec. It also has one 10 MHz licence in Toronto and may use the spectrum as a bargaining chip in future network partnership talks. However, investors may not have appreciated Quebecor's aggressive bidding strategy, sending its stock down 26.8% in trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange since the auction started.

Data & Audio-Visual Enterprises Wireless Inc. ($243,159,000 in 10 licences): DAVE Wireless has emerged as a small, yet potentially important player with spectrum in Ontario as well as major urban areas such as Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, and Victoria.

Shaw Communications Inc. ($189,519,000 in 18 licences): Shaw holds licences in British Columbia, Alberta, Winnipeg, major cities in Saskatchewan and northern Ontario. The company's economical strategy has been lauded by analysts for its efficient bidding throughout its cable territorial base.

6934579 Canada Inc. ($52,385,077 in four licences): The U.S. private equity-led company started the auction with a bang but appears to have ended it with a whimper. It will own poor quality spectrum in southern Ontario and Quebec that will require a larger capital expenditure to deploy a feasible cellphone network.

Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. ($40,773,750 in three licences): With the departure of its private equity backers, MTS Allstream's strategy switched to owning as much of Manitoba as possible.

Bragg Communications Inc. ($25,628,000 in 19 licences): Like other regional contenders, Bragg scaled back its auction strategy to focus on its home territory in Atlantic Canada. It also has spectrum in pockets of Ontario along the 401 corridor which could be traded away to other entrants following the auction's end.

Bell Mobility ($740,928,000 in 54 licences): Of the three wireless incumbents, Bell spent the least amount in winning as much spectrum as possible. It still increased its spectrum footprint in Quebec, Ontario, Atlantic Canada and the northern territories, leading observers to believe a HSPA/GSM network upgrade is in its future.

Telus Corp. ($879,889,000 in 59 licences): Like Bell, Telus will likely use the spectrum it owns in Ontario, Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Alberta to deploy a faster, GSM-related network. Investors, however, have sent its shares down 15.8% since the auction began.

Rogers Communications Inc. ($999,367,000 in 55 licences): According to analysts, Rogers did not have to bid on any spectrum to remain a major wireless player in Canada, but it dominated the auction spending close to $1-billion on upgrading its capacity from coast to coast. However, its shares are down 9.4% since the auction started.

Motorola morphs the successful RAZR V3 into a 3G phone, announces a slew of entry-level handsets, and shows off three new fashion phones and wireless accessories, including a pair of Bluetooth Oakley sunglasses.
Hot on the heels of Nokia's announcement of seven new mobile phones, Motorola has unveiled a 3G clamshell based on the design of the successful RAZR V3 called the V1150. The US-based manufacturer also announced a wide range of lower tier products at CommunicAsia 2005 in Singapore this week that it hopes will bolster its position in the Asia-Pacific region.

Although not quite as thin as its svelte GSM counterpart, the V1150 looks quite similar to its predecessor with a beautifully etched similar keypad and vivid dual displays. It sports a 2-megapixel camera for stills and an additional camera on the inside for 2-way video calling on third-generation (3G) networks. The V1150 also ups the ante by supporting removable TransFlash memory cards. While the company was quiet on the much-anticipated iTunes phones, the V1150 holds its own with a multimedia player supporting AAC+, MPEG4, WMV, WMA, MP3 and Real media files

Pricing is yet to be confirmed but it is expected to launch in Australia in the third quarter of 2005. Although not specific about exclusivity deals with any networks, Motorola's director of product marketing for mobile devices Stephen Doran said the company is talking with a number of carriers for its release in Australia. Later this year, Optus, Vodafone and Telstra are expected to launch their own 3G mobile services in competition with Hutchison?s 3.

Motorola, the worlds second largest phone maker, also hopes to capture more market share through low-tier customers with two entry-level 3G handsets and four GSM models. The C975 is a candybar-designed 3G phone with a VGA camera, MP3 player and expandable memory via removable TransFlash cards. The V975 has similar capabilities but is a flip phone with an external colour display.

The new entry- to mid-level GSM models also aim to bring mobile technology to the masses, especially in developing mobile markets in South-East Asia. Devices include the back-to-basics, monochrome-screened C117 and its big brother, the colour-screened C157. Moving slightly up the scale is the Bluetooth-equipped V360. It features push-to-talk, an MP3 player and a VGA camera. Another follow-on from the success of the V3 is the V280. It is a candybar phone measuring a super-thin 114 x 49 x 11mm and boasting a 262K-colour, 128 x 160-pixel display.

Jailbreak).
