WASHINGTON—According to a report released Monday by the National Institutes of Health, 93 percent of those who get behind the wheel while intoxicated arrive at their homes safe and sound, just like they told everybody they would. "Most of these people are barely even buzzed, and 87 percent of the time they're driving primarily on back roads for distances of like, eight miles, tops," said the study's lead author, Dr. Henry Tillman, adding that the vast majority of inebriated drivers stuck with only beer all night, so they were totally fine. "Roughly 64 percent of drunk drivers have cousins who are cops anyway, so it's really no big deal." The study concluded that a mere one in 15 drunk drivers end up dying in a cascading torrent of fire, so, you know, odds. (original post from The Onion)

‘Underneath the Bunker seems to shake off contributors like a dog shakes off water’. So

'Underneath the Bunker seems to shake off contributors like a dog shakes off water'. So said a friend of mine, two or three (maybe even four) weeks ago. Shortly after that, another comrade noted that writers working for my journal were 'essentially unsackable' (owing, perhaps, to my 'rather quaint belief in free speech'). Which is it, you ask? Do I shake off critics, or let them stick to the rock like limpets? Do I roar like the lion, or drip like the dishcloth?

The answer, of course, is a bit of both. It takes a lot for me to sack someone, certainly, which may explain why my journal is peppered with derogatory references to me: some deserved, others served merely for the sake of it. On the other hand, I have dealt with a fair few short-term contributors - people who, without a hint of a push, have yet tumbled over the critical cliff. If I forced any of these people out, may I say this: I did not do so consciously.

Why do I write this? I write this because of 'Gregory'. Gregory who? Who indeed. A few days ago, as previously noted, someone made the mistake of calling me Gregory. I was not overly perturbed - though it was not the first time this had occurred. Indeed, a few years ago I went through a period in which many people erroneously named me Gregory. And I blame it all on Tor Borsen.

Who is Tor Borsen? He used to be a colleague of mine. In the days in which Underneath the Bunker was a paper journal, Borsen often contributed short reviews on subjects such as Estonian drama in the Seventeenth Century or Homo-Hippopotamism in Central African poetry. During our on-line life, however, he offered only a single article: a review of Kirios Quebec's beautifully destructive novel, Reappraising Perversity, Reinventing Hope, Relocating Life. This review, as you can see for yourselves, was jam-packed with accusations against my person. Among other things, I was called an 'incorrigible cobble-headed baboon', a 'satanic, sadistic, Salvo-Teutonic slave-driver' and a 'whip-cracking' task-master who shirked his responsibilities by sunning himself on holiday in Vladivostok. It is true, I was spending a lot of time in that Russian city at this point, but I was certainly not sunning myself. I was in fact recovering from a nasty bout of 'scribbler's elbow'. As for the rest, I can only imagine that Mr Borsen was going through one of his ungainly fits of paranoia. 'Baboon' I may accept (I am not ashamed of our ape-like ancestry) but 'slave-driver', surely, is the work of a highly-strung drama queen. The only whips to which I am accustomed, meanwhile, are those of the walnut variety.

The real danger of this review, yet, lies elsewhere. Further on, Borsen notes a pleasing similarity between my name and that of Quebec's evil anti-hero, Gregory Wreck. When I say he 'notes a pleasing similarity' I am giving him credit. Borsen does his dirty work subtlely. He never goes so far as to say that he thinks the character has any ostensible relation to me - not at all. Funny, however, how many people leave the review thinking that he has said such a thing and that I am, in fact, the one and only prototype for Quebec's unpleasant wreck of a man.

This is a pity, for in truth I am not. I would be charmed to have a starring role in a book as great as this. Alas, the author has never known me well enough to grant such a favour. The 'pleasing similiarity' between Georgy Riecke and Gregory Wreck is nought but a coincidence.

Scrambling back to the summit of this fanciful ramble. Where is Tor Borsen now? As I said, he wrote no more for me after this. So who did he write for? The noisiest rumours tell of how he was so inspired by Kirios Quebec's ferocious desire to 'destroy the novel' that he decided to follow in the French-Greek writer's wake, only to put these noble thoughts aside when offered a position at the South Californian Institute of Arts. Seeing as this institution no longer lists him amongst their teachers, it is to be presumed that he has since moved on - where I cannot say. Heidi Kohlenberg recalls a friend of a friend thinking that he had become a travel writer. This would suit him, for on his day Borsen is a fine, penetrating writer. It only seems sad that, due to this one histrionic study, I should have to view his name with such regret. Still, that is what you get for making the the uncertain yet enduring supposition that I, Georgy Riecke, am in essence, a Gregory.

Hey Humans.....

Well it has been so freakin' hot this week and today is no exception. I have taken today to lounge and stay out of the heat. It has been a long week, so the down time is refreshing to say the least.

I went out for a bit last night to listen to some live music and have an adult beverage. It was nice to hang with friends old and new....just talking about nothing and enjoying life. The band we listened to was solid but boring...a 3 piece outfit that just stood there and played, never talked to the crowd, and stood there and play some more. It was just background noise for the venue....

The kiddo have new bikes....I worked on Eion's a bit to get it ready for for a daddy and kiddo ride this evening. Cheyenne is napping now....she has read over 400 pages today of the new "Breaking Dawn" book. I took her early this morning to buy it...it was released at midnight to the public. She has been waiting since the spring to get this book. She loves to read books!!! When she starts on a series, she may read the whole thing in a week if she can get all the books.

I have certainly been busy in the brain dept. with Aug 4th quickly approaching....life will certainly be different by lunch on Monday. All in all it's a marker in the road map that is my life. A point to start fresh .... We have to get the house ready for market, and I guess I need to be on the look out for a new place. Not sure what I want just yet, or what I need. Kind of like my vehicle situation...LOL! My poor Neon...it's hanging in there too....damn deer!!!!!

Gregory (”Greg”) Efthimios Louganis was born on 29 January, 1960 in El Cajon, California

Gregory ("Greg") Efthimios Louganis was born on 29 January, 1960 in El Cajon, California, USA. Greg is an American diver, who is best known for winning back-to-back Olympic titles in both the 3m and 10m diving events. Greg received the James E. Sullivan Award from the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) in 1984 as the most outstanding amateur athlete in the United States. Greg is of Samoan/Swedish descent and was raised in California by his adoptive parents, a Greek-American couple.

At age 16, he took part in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, where he placed second in the tower event, behind Italian Klaus Dibiasi. Two years later, with Dibiasi retired, Greg went on to win his first world title in the same event.

In 1978, he accepted a diving scholarship to the University of Miami where he studied theater, but in 1981 transferred to the University of California, Irvine, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts.

The rise of the Chinese to dominance in the sport is in part attributable to Greg, as the Chinese coaches filmed and studied his performances assiduously, and built their national approach to diving on the mechanics they were able to discern in his technique, and upon their communications with leading coaches such as Hobie Billingsley.

Greg was a favorite for two golds in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, but an American boycott of the games prevented him from participating.

Greg won 2 world titles in 1982, and in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, with record scores and leads over his opponents. Greg won gold medals in both the springboard and tower diving events.

After winning 2 more world championship titles in 1986, he repeated his 1984 feat in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, although not without difficulties. In what is considered one of the greatest feats in sporting history, Greg suffered an injury, hitting his head on the diving board during the preliminary rounds while performing a reverse 2 1/2 pike; he completed the preliminaries, despite a concussion, then went on to repeat the dive during the finals, with nearly perfect scores, earning him the gold medal. Greg's comeback earned him the title of ABC's Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year for 1988.

Greg posed nude for Playgirl magazine in 1987.

In 1994, Greg announced he was gay; he took part in the 1994 Gay Games as diving announcer, and performed an exhibition of several dives to a standing-room only crowd of nearly 3,000 spectators.

In 1995, Greg's autobiography co-written with Eric Marcus, entitled Breaking the Surface, was published. Greg revealed publicly the domestic abuse and rape he suffered from a live-in lover and that he was HIV-positive. The announcement caused some controversy because of the belief, as expressed by then-United States Olympic Committee executive director Dr. Harvey Schiller, that he should have disclosed his HIV status during the 1988 Olympic games because his diving board injury resulted in light bleeding. Greg had agonized over whether to disclose his status but was later advised by AIDS expert Dr. Anthony Fauci that the injury posed no danger of infection to fellow competitors.

Following the announcement of his HIV status, Greg was dropped by most of his corporate sponsors, with the exception of the aquatics gear manufacturer Speedo, which continued to sponsor him as of 2007.

A 1997 made-for-television movie, Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story, based on the book, starred Mario López as Greg.

In 1999, Greg's second book, For the Life of Your Dog (co-authored by Betsy Sikora Siino) was published.

Since retiring from competitive diving, Greg has done some acting, most notably appearing in an off-Broadway production of the Paul Rudnick play Jeffrey. As a hobby, he competes at the top level of dog agility with his Jack Russell Terriers. Greg is also the former boyfriend of former E! television personality Steve Kmetko.

Greg was briefly mentioned in the 2005 hit film The Longest Yard. The character Caretaker mentioned Greg whilst explaining Crewe's, another character, chances of winning a game of 1-on-1 Basketball with D.

Hey Humans....

Hope everyone is well. The humid days roll on, it is July. I have not talked to everyone very much lately...I have been just laying low and keeping to myself. Sometimes life is better that way.

Well it looks as though we are going to sell the house. The reality is that this house is way to big for me. A single guy, 3200 square feet to clean and occupy, and it's a crap load of money for me to spend each month. I do have a tent and an air mattress....I might be coming to a yard near you! LOL! I have mixed emotions on this house really....I will just keep them to myself. Everyone knows I will miss sitting on my porch in the evening.....

OK off to bed so I can get up early and watch Swingtown in the morning....

As lojas fotografadas no Bourbon Shopping Pompéia foram: Animale, Aramis, Barred's, Datelli, Forum, Gregory, Guess, L'occitane, Lucy in The Sky, MOB, Opera Rock, Santa Lolla, Siberian, Starpoint, Uncle K, VR Menswear, Zsa Zsa.

LaCar is leaving for the beach and requested a book. Having asked a few compelling questions about setting, type character, etc. to see what she might like, she answered saying:"Just a page turner..."
Hmmm ... a page turner. The search was on, the game was afoot...

I know from reading enough books and enough lists and responses that we may all agree on a book or two but one man's "stall" is another man's "rush." Nevertheless, I skimmed over the shelves last night, looking for a beach read. NO to The Devil Wears Prada or any Marian Keyes. NO to Maeve Binchy. NO to Jay McInerny. NO to Jennifer Weiner; just not a fit for LaCar.

Page turner, page turner, page turner... I guess I don't do a lot of them. Rather, we don't own them. Nevertheless, I made a selection and called her.
"You need to make a choice," I said.
"Oh, sounds good!"
(This was sort of like shopping to both of us. Shopping is GOOD.)
"OK, here's the list," I said and narrated about each as I went along:
TARA ROAD - Maeve Binchy
GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING - Chevalier
DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA YA SISTERHOOD - R. Wells
FORTUNE'S ROCKS - Anita Shreve
WIDEACRE - Philippa Gregory
THE MANY LIVES AND SORROW OF JOSEPHINE B - Guilland
(Clearly I was unsure about what LaCar likes to read; and you have to work with what's on your shelf. I did consider one of Plum Sykes tinsel-y books, though and yes, I own two of them!)

And the winner was?
WIDEACRE. It's tawdry. It's odd. The "interesting" thing in terms of its writing is that the main character is evil. Not magic, wizard evil. It's her character. Bad. You're supposed to like the main character in some way, right? Oh, this is a tawdry novel. And it's told in the first person so that you wonder how can this work out? Yes, I'm trying to dress up a semi-pot-boiling-Brit steamy book that is NOT my usual cup of tea. In fact it doesn't even go with tea.

But Gregory has page-turning talent. We'll see what LaCar thinks. I have always sworn that I wouldn't bother to lend the book to anyone much less let anyone know I even read it. Well, mark it down as "entertainment." Possilby a beach read. Ain't nothing wrong with that. What would you have recommended to her?

Hey Kids....

Good morning.... Well I came into work early this morning to find this message from Rachelle Israel (show host) about the Garrison Starr show I was going to tomorrow night in Memphis......

Just got this from Garrison's management. Not sure if or when I will reschedule but I will let you know if I do. Sorry.

Hey Rachelle
We have some not so great news.. Garrison broke the middle finger on her
left hand.
She is going to have to cancel and/or reschedule this weekend's event.

She is so sorry, as am I.. It may have been do-able if it were her right
hand, but being her left there is no way to pull off the performance. (left hand handles all chord configurations etc)

Please accept Garrison's apologies. It is such bad timing..

She would be thrilled to reschedule, if you are interested in doing so..

Well it will still be a good get away for the kids and I.....

Crap, GV
