This post is mostly to justify the amount of time I’ve spent watching Remington Steele at Hulu

This post is mostly to justify the amount of time I've spent watching Remington Steele at Hulu this past week, but when I was looking through their archives, I came across a surprising number of environmentally-oriented programs. What's up with all this green tv?

Hulu is a free streaming video site- like Youtube, but they carry entire shows and movies. It's legal, and there's some stuff you have to sign in to watch, and there are a couple of commercials played during each episode. But the videos stream pretty quickly and without weirdness for me, so that's a nice big plus.

You can watch clips or episodes from "Big Ideas for a Small Planet", which is a documentary series about sustainable topics- power, water, fashion (!?), and the like. "Eco Biz" profiles entrepreneurs in green businesses, and new eco-business strategies. "Ecoist" appears to be clips of famous people talking about their environmental activism. National Geographic has a passel of short environment documentaries posted, also. Oh, and Fox was helpful and posted their 10-second clips of famous people telling you to do green things from Earth Day. So, if you feel the need to hear Omar Epps lecture you on reusable bag use, be Hulu's guest.

As for environment movies, there's...uh...The Day After Tomorrow. Which is awesome, but not in the informative way.

Looks like there are some entire channels dedicated to green programing now- Sundance's The Green, Discovery's Planet Green. They've got reality shows (on Planet Green: Greensburg- after a tornado destroyed everything, they're trying to rebuild, well, green) and celebrities (Sundance does Ecoist, but a more entertaining series has Isabella Rosselini in elaborate insect costumes while describing in graphic detail their mating rituals. Probably NSFW, or children for whom the facts of life have not been outlined, though bug love presents a much less loaded conversation-starter than most cable programming). Plus home makeovers, science, history, business...like other cable channels, only I'm hoping the show host banter is less grating and more informative.

I've got at least a season of Steele left, but maybe I'll stream some Big Ideas afterward. Anyone else seen these shows? Whats good?

Shopping for a new television? There are several things to look for when incorporating green practic

Shopping for a new television? There are several things to look for when incorporating green practices into your television purchase.

Things to Consider:
Size:
Broadly speaking, the larger the TV, the more power it consumes. Regardless of the kind of TV you have (plasma, LCD etc..) If you're really looking for giant images, projection screens are actually more eco-friendly then you would think. Consider downsizing your television size needs, or opt for a movie-style viewing system.

Chemicals:
Avoid toxic components, including flame retardants known as deca-brominated diphenyl ethers (deca-BDEs) which can be released from TVs onto surrounding surfaces where they may be inhaled. Look for electronics made in flame-retardant products (Toshiba and NEC are leaders in this field). In addition, all Sony and Panasonic products are PBDE-free! Samsung and Sharp, two other popular television manufacturers, do not add flame retardants; however there may be remnants of the materials in the recycled plastic used in making new products.

Consumers should also be sure to avoid heavy and neurotoxic metals such as lead and mercury as well as carcinogenic chromium and cadmium. All of these can eventually leach into the environment when machines end up in landfills.

What to Look for:
The quickest way to pick an energy-saving television is to opt for a small screen, preferably a liquid crystal display (LCD) since these not only consume less electricity, they also contain less lead than cathode ray tubes (CRTs). If you're looking for ratings of energy consumption, you should note that Energy Star only checks consumption rates when the TV is in standby mode. For more accurate consumption metrics check current CNET energy use ratings.

Some Good Models to Consider:

Philips’ Flat TV 42" – “Eco TV” , about $1,399;

Sharp's 20-inch LC-20B8U-S LCD, about $650;

Viewsonic's 32-inch N3250W LCD, about $945; and

Panasonic's PT-AE900U projector, about $2,300;

Overall, start thinking smaller when it comes to televisions, and make sure to avoid harmful chemicals!

Happy watching.

South Africa needs to hurry the hell up. The USA is getting ready to go green by recycling their ol

South Africa needs to hurry the hell up. The USA is getting ready to go green by recycling their old Analog TVs and upgrading to HDTV. This is in advance of the Digital Transition Act which is forcing consumers to switch to lower energy television sets.

What does it mean to "go green"?

Consumer electronics, as a whole, are more eco-friendly than ever. Today, virtually every product on the shelf contains fewer chemicals, is more energy efficient, and is easier to recycle, repair and upgrade. Many manufacturers have developed green electronics lines. These products go the extra mile to contain fewer chemicals and are more energy efficient. In order to be labeled green, a product must meet a stringent checklist of criteria. There are hundreds of green electronics from plasma TVs and computers to MP3 players and cameras.

The USA doesn't even have serious power failures, which are what South Africans in major cities have to experience on a daily basis. The government tells us: "Save energy!" but they don't guide us in the right direction. Call me ignorant, but until I stumbled across the My Green Electronics website I didn't realise that newer televisions save energy. It seems obvious now.

American cable companies are required by the FCC to keep supporting consumers with analog tv until 2012. After that, they will probably start charging extra to keep the connection going.

Cue the scary music. According to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, "If the cable companies had their way, you, your mother and father, or your next door neighbor could go to sleep one night after watching their favorite channel and wake up the next morning to a dark fuzzy screen."

I think the way this whole undertaking is being run is exemplary: it might be profit-based, but it is a strong move towards Digital TV and will therefore help the planet go green.

South Africa needs to shape up and guide its population towards effective ways to save energy by saying "Bye, bye!" to Analog:

Web TV!!!

green.tv

"green.tv is a web TV channel dedicated to the environment. The aim of green.tv is to raise awareness of environmental issues, especially climate change. We try to do this by collating watchable, engaging films and publishing them online."

The first video I watched on green tv is called, "Going Big Box vs. Going Local", which was created by Amy Wolf.

Here is the summary,

"Created by Amy Wolf, a Movement Vision Lab Film Fellow in 2007, this short new video follows one woman on a shopping quest - as we learn about the the pros and cons of shopping at big multi-nationals versus local, community-owned businesses. This video explores the social and environmental consequences of shopping at a big box store versus shopping locally. "

Here is the film on You Tube:

What I like about this film is it doesn't just give you information on this particular problem, but it also gives solutions. I think what happens with me sometimes is I get overwhelmed with the problem, that I determine the solution must also be too huge, too time consuming, just too much for me to deal with. I am learning that isn't the case and that's cool. Hope on a more consistent basis feels better, it's empowering! :)

Second, it made me laugh a few times!

Third, it is in New York City Baby! Home sweet home.

I'm going to check out some more of videos, see if they rock as well.

I'm out!

Ascot may only be a few days but, our marathon horse race just keeps on going with the 20,000 mark just passed.

Copious amounts of champagne and caviar will accompany the dancing girls, flown in from all over the world. Entertainment will be provided by David Bowie (flying over from Manhattan).

The following day we will all have the chance to zoom around the Silverstone race circuit for a little light afternoon fun. And then its off to Pete's allotment for a BBQ of alligator steaks, with Italian mushrooms.
