Since its being launched in January, we’ve been referring to the ReGreen Program for Residenti

Since its being launched in January, we've been referring to the ReGreen Program for Residential Remodeling for own internal questions about how to build in a more environmentally friendly way. We've also begun to reference the guide as part of our construction drawings to point contractors to (hopefully they'll read the small print in our specs!). We'll soon begin construction on one of our projects where we've referenced the guide, so we're hoping it will act as a great resource throughout the construction process.

[You'll see this image on page 2 of the kitchen renovation section] -

The colorfully illustrated guideline (yes, there are even photos) delineates a best-practices construction approach for homes, whether its a simple kitchen or bathroom renovation, outdoor patio creation, exterior addition, or a major gut renovation. The guidelines give a very real, hands-on account of the before and after, lessons learned, budget constraints (when are there not?) and even comments from owners about the real issues.

[This image is found on page 56, the outdoor living chapter]:

While there are no certifications granted by following this program, it gives designers, builders and homeowners a strong reference and alternative for building green in situations where a project does not qualify for certification systems such as LEED, Energy Star and Health House.

For the time being, this reference may be our answer to finding a green rating system for urban residential projects, where there is not yet a certification system that directly applies.

We have selected furniture for the Thinkspace office and the one piece that I'm most excited about is the Phillippe Starck designed Emeco stool. We have purchased these in bar stool height (14" W x 14" D x 30") for the cyber cafe.

The stool is produced in the United States and is environmentally friendly. 80% of the aluminum is recycled. Half is post consumer (soft drink cans) and half is postindustrial (manufacturing scrap). The Emeco craftsman grind each weld flush to give it a seemless appearance. The aluminum is three times stronger than steel and has a estimated life of 150 years. It also comes with a life-time warranty. Emeco started their business designing chairs for the U.S. Navy and one of the design requirements was that it be torpedo proof! If you have the time, you should check out the video on YouTube that shows someone taking an Emeco chair and catapulting it into a brick wall 50 times. It pretty much survives with very little damage!

By selecting environmentally sound product choices we expect it to provide us credit toward our LEED certification. Also, there's no off gassing because aluminum does not emit VOCs or aldehydes in any measurable concentration. The things that I really like about this stool is the excellent craftsmanship, modern, elegant, attractive design and the fact that it costs about the same price as a nice stool made of plastic or wood.

Cardboarddesign has launched a new e-commerce site. With prices ranging from $36 - $160, everyone can own a piece. From penthouses to playhouses, the furniture fits in any dwelling.

The special honeycomb cell shape of the cardboard makes for an extremely durable, high-performance, innovative and lightweight natural material. The honeycomb shape design inside the two outer layers allows the cardboard to bear more weight and pressure than one would imagine.

Cardboardesign products have a modern aesthetic. It can be varnished to make it waterproof. The desktops take on a lacquered look if the top is varnished.

A very exciting aspect of the company's cardboard furniture is how consumers can create art on it by painting, applying collage, or drawing graffiti on the surfaces. Examples of this are shown on the website in The Hampton Design Showhouse section.

The first group of furniture, called Series55, comes in pieces that fit together like a puzzle. Nothing extra is needed to assemble them.

As a company Cardboardesign is working towards being conscientious in all that it uses and all that it gains. Not one tree was cut down to
produce the furniture & packaging. Not one person or country was exploited in making the products, which are 100% made in America. The glue used in this furniture contains no harsh chemicals or animal products. This product is fully recyclable and should never end up as landfill.

I came across this website while looking for flooring for some of my own home-renovation projects (mainly, my kitchen and bathroom, which have hideous vinyl tile from sometime before I was born), and found that not only do they have a really good selection of bamboo and cork flooring (along with hardwood, laminate, tile and more), but their prices are also awesome! Where else can you get cork for under $2.50/square foot and bamboo starting at $2.19/square foot? (If anyone knows, please comment, I'd be very interested!) Check them out at iFloor.com.

So, I got married a couple of months ago, and one of my sisters (I have five) bought me some really great 300-thread-count sheets. Only one problem, they weren't made with organic cotton. Now, since they were a gift, I'm still using them and not complaining. But I want to get another set (I'm really spoiled now, it's really hard to go back to 230 thread count after you've slept on 300+), but I've been having a hard time finding them in organic cotton. Then I found Coyuchi. They make really great organic cotton sheets in a pretty decent selection of colors and patterns. So, that'll be my next purchase. Check them out.

Okay, pretty sure most people are aware, but Ikea is one of the greatest low-cost, environmentally and socially friendly companies out there. Where else can you get light fixtures you feel good about for under $10?!? Their forestry policy states that they won't accept wood products from in-tact natural forests or from forests with a "clearly defined high conservation value." They have specially trained inspectors that go all over the world to factories that produce their products to make sure they are living up to Ikea's standards. They work actively to prevent child labour. They even got one of their suppliers to switch from soaking rattan in diesel oil to palm oil. So, I know I'm just raving here, but where else can you spend so little money and know that you're not supporting sweatshops, or child labour, or irresponsible loggin practices? So, support Ikea!
