<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This summer we are experimenting with small groups for our Student Ministry program. It is a completely new concept to our teens, and has met with varying success. But I wanted something different for our graduating seniors. Many of our seniors are going off to campuses where they will meet new and different worldviews that they have never encountered before. Perspectives that will challenge their thinking and their beliefs. And I am not convinced that many of those same students have a solid foundation to stand on. So instead of wrapping them into the rest of the groups, I have set up meeting times at Perkins in the evening on Mondays.</p>
<p>These times are very laid-back. I am not using curriculum, in fact, it is very conversationally based. It really functions as an exchange. Our teens who come share their plans, I share my experiences, and hit them with the question "How would you describe where you are at on your Spiritual Journey?" It is an intentionally vague question, and there have been a few different answers.</p>
<p>Tonight was a great evening. I got to spend the evening with two teens that I have not been able to spend much time at all with over the past year. And both admitted that they need to spend more time in Scripture. So I shared the one thing above all else that will keep them grounded during this transition. Quality time in Scripture. I encouraged them to start now, building a habit out of it before they even arrive on campus (shameless plug for the <a href="http://journeywithjesus08.blogspot.com" target="_blank">Journey With Jesus</a>), and I challenged them to journal their reading instead of just reading and leaving it behind.</p>
<p>Overall, it was a great evening. Good conversation, great topics, honest and open dialogue with two teens who want to follow in Jesus' footsteps, but just need some guidance in how best to do so. So what do you do with your graduates to help them through this transitional period?</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The NY Times published <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/23/education/23careers.html?_r=2&#38;ref=education&#38;oref=slogin&#38;oref=slogin" target="_blank">an interesting article</a> about a push to encourage graduates of top colleges and universities to work in service positions (including National Service such as AmeriCorps and Teach for America) instead of investment banks.</p>
<p>Some points that gave me hope and food for thought:</p>
<ol>
<li>The highest-ranked colleges and professors are at least paying lip service to the idea that the purpose of their fancy education is not necessarily to create more investment bankers or consultants.</li>
<li>Some colleges are putting money and scholarships behind this lip service, some even paying student loans for grads who go into service.</li>
<li>It's easy for Jr.s and Sr.s to apply for lucrative positions - the systems are in place.  Let's put them in place for service positions as well.</li>
<li>Obama supports National Service(!) and people have noticed (!!)</li>
</ol>
<p>At a recent presentation by <a href="http://www.scholarlearn.com/About_Scholarship_Learning_Company.aspx" target="_blank">Jason Lum</a>, he expressly encouraged the service-oriented audience to pursue scholarships to further their education so that they could afford to continue to serve their communities.  Nobody had ever specifically pointed that out that challenge of a public service position: it's nearly impossible to pay for the credentials that are required.</p>
<p>This article gives me hope because it talks about barriers to service being addressed right now - awareness, prestige, access, and debt.  Fantastic news!  How can we keep up the momentum?</p>

FUCKING HELL), Generation Y constantly <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/23/education/23careers.html?scp=6&#38;sq=ivy+league+graduates+jobs&#38;st=nyt">ponders the merits </a>of selling one's soul vs paying one's dues in the hope of later saving the world.</p>
<p>Of course, Gen-Y's predicament is worsened by the fact that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gen_Y">by definition</a>, most probably can't imagine life without the Internet and thus compulsively access countless articles and blog posts, such as this one, which they will read and then feel even shittier about life. Then they will congregate with their liberal friends (on gchat, no less) and then feel shitty to the point of wanting to go out and get really drunk, but of course they can't afford that.</p>
<p>LIBERAL Gen-Yers have it even worse, because they spend time <a href="http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/23/conservatives-are-happier-than-liberals-discuss/">mulling over </a>the injustices of society and get worked up about it, though some feel they fulfil a purpose in life by <a href="http://gawker.com/tag/perez-hilton/?i=5017825&#38;t=readers-outraged-at-perez-hiltons-phone+call-scheme">drawing </a>unborn babies and penises on celebrity photos.</p>
<p>This <a href="http://www.observer.com/2008/ivy-league-slaves-new-york?page=0%2C0">article </a>on Ivy League graduates taking miserable media jobs as assistants is so depressing. Since Americans love anything from England if bellepoq wrote a 'Oxbridge slaves of London' counterpart and submitted it to Gawker she might strike gold, but sadly she lacks the power to overshare as Emily Gould does.</p>
<p>"<span>A 24-year-old assistant at a major publishing house pointed out that graduates who take assistant jobs hoping to parlay them into writing jobs are often sorely disappointed: “If your goal is to stick it out and work your way to becoming an editor, then I would say that it probably is one of the best ways to go about it. If you want to become a published writer, I’d say it <em>could</em> be helpful in that you can make connections, but it also could work against you, <strong>because all your time is sucked up reading and editing other people’s writing</strong>.”"</span></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:center;">Nowadays, more and more graduates are being produced by Higher Education Institutions in the Philippines. There is already an overproduction of graduates without jobs and if ever they will find one, it is not aligned with the course they finished. Most graduates end up in call centers or others in shopping malls as sales agents or baggers. The sad thing about it is that, they can't apply what they have learned for in college where these graduates spent hundreds of thousands just to earn a degree. But what is really the problem for these graduates ending up in these jobs?</p>
<p style="text-align:center;">Hiring companies complain that most job seekers as under qualified. Imagine an applicant who is a degree holder can't even converse in English. Some don't have the skills needed in the position they are applying for. And most of all, most of the graduates today don't even have the guts to look for work, as if work will knock on their doors. I know it's very depressing knowing that a lot of Filipino people are well known in different crafts not just locally but internationally, but its the reality. We are being plagued by circumstances that only we have the right to either make it or break it.</p>
<p style="text-align:center;">It's not yet the end for all Filipino graduates. We all know ourselves. Dream big and dream wild. We need to do something in order to uplift the quality of our graduates today. Take action now before its too late.</p>

<p><strong>From Canada:</strong> Priority processing for skilled workers (at the discretion of the Minister for Immigration) will not be allowed, ensuring that candidates are put into place in a more timely manner.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>A consultation process has now been initiated where all Canadian provinces and employers groups will be invited to give their views on the types of skilled workers that should be prioritised to meet with Canada’s skilled labour shortages. This consultation process is likely to take several months.</em></p></blockquote>
<p><strong>From Australia:</strong> A new processing centre has been opened in Brisbane that will handle General Skilled Migration visas. This is to assist in the volumes of visas now expected as a result of an increased target set by the government.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>The Brisbane Skilled Processing Centre (BSPC) will not be fully operational for a few more months but it is hoped that it will help reduce the current backlog of applications at the Adelaide Skilled Processing Centre (ASPC).</em></p></blockquote>

<p><strong>From the UK:</strong> The new Post-Study Work category has been introduced. This will replace the International Graduate Scheme, allowing overseas students with degrees from UK universities to remain in the UK to work for up to 2 years after graduation (1 year more than the IGS).</p>

<title><![CDATA[Women Graduates Expect Lower Earnings than Men]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A recent study shows that women who graduate from college expect that they will be paid less than their male counterparts. The survey, the first Collegiate Seniors' Economic Expectation Research (SEER) Survey &#38; Index, is compiled by Professor Charles Wilf of <a href="http://www.newsroom.duq.edu/r20080625-collegepoll.html">Duquesne University</a>. It is intended to be administered annually to a national sample and seeks to track trends in career expectations, among other factors.</p>
<p>The Duquesne survey indicates that 51 percent of women and only 35 percent of men polled expect to earn under $30,000 in their first year after college. 12 percent of women and 24 percent of men expect to earn more than $50,000. The gender gap among business students is not as wide, with 56 percent of women and 67 percent of men majoring in business expecting to earn more than $50,000 in three years. These findings support data from Behind the Pay Gap, a report released last year by the American Association of University Women that found women earn 80 percent of what men make just one year after college – a gap that widens to 69 percent after ten years.</p>
<p>According SEER's authors, this gender gap in expected earnings partly results from students' choice of academic major. Women who participated in the survey tended to major in the social sciences while the men tended to major in fields like computer science and engineering. Wilf claims the gender gap as not really being a question of a glass ceiling, but that "the research shows that females simply tend to choose majors that [lead to careers] that pay less."</p>

The decision to outsource is often made in the interest of lowering firm costs, redirecting or conserving energy directed at the competencies of a particular business, or to make more efficient use of land, labor, capital, (information) technology and resources.</li>
<li><strong>Personal outsourcing</strong> is when you ask someone else to do house cleaning, yard work, dog walking, or grocery shopping for you.</li>
<li>Offshoring is to do outsourcing overseas or in a separate country. Wikipedia: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offshoring">Offshoring</a> describes the relocation of business processes from one country to another. This includes any business process such as production, manufacturing, or services. Offshoring can be seen in the context of either production offshoring or services offshoring. The economic logic is to reduce costs. If some people can use some of their skills more cheaply than others, those people have the comparative advantage. The idea is that countries should freely trade the items that cost the least for them to produce.</li>
<li><strong>Personal offshoring:</strong> Offshore outsourcing has transformed the way U.S. companies do business. Now, some early adopters are figuring out how to tap overseas workers for personal tasks. In fact, the Bethel man said, he'd never even ridden a horse before he learned the Second Company Governor's Horse Guard was looking for new members.</p>
<p>But on Sunday, he completed a 24-week training program to join the all-volunteer, horse-mounted militia, which is marking its 200th anniversary this year.</p>
<p>"Once a cavalryman, always a cavalryman," Goessinger said.</p>
<p>Goessinger was one of 10 new members welcomed into the unit during graduation ceremonies attended by family, friends and state dignitaries, including Gov. M. Jodi Rell.</p>
<p>Fourteen people started the course, according to Sgt. Paul Mazzara, of Newtown, the recruit training officer. Four of the 10 have prior military experience, and several had never ridden a horse before joining.</p>
<p>The Horse Guard, which consists of 40 troops and 33 horses and is based at the former Fairfield Hills Hospital, represents the governor and the state at a variety of ceremonial functions, and has participated in numerous presidential Inaugurals, most recently in 2005.</p>
<p>"There is great pride in this organization," said Rep. Debralee Hovey, R-Newtown. "When they show up at parades, they represent all the military units in the state. As an equestrian<br />
myself, I know how hard they work."</p>
<p>Highlight of the ceremony was the cavalry tradition of having each new trooper open a bottle of champagne with a saber, followed by a round of toasting.</p>
<p>While a number of recruits struggled with the trick, repeatedly sliding the blade of the sword along the neck of the bottle before dislodging the cork, Kathleen Giuffre of New Milford accomplished it on the try.</p>
<p>But success was more a matter of luck than practice, said Giuffre, a former member of the National Guard who was deployed overseas three times, including service in Iraq and Bosnia.</p>
<p>Giuffre said she has loved horses since she was a child, and had considered joining the Horse Guard for several years before finally doing so.</p>
<p>"The best part of this is working with the horses and getting to know my fellow troopers," she said.</p>
