This BBC radio feature offers a solid understanding of what the environmental impacts of books are and what we need to do differently. For book lovers, this understanding presents an opportunity to contribute to the change by asking booksellers and publishers to print on environmentally responsible paper.

Kami berdua memberi dia sebutan ’Adek Bayi’ sejak pertama kali kehamilan istriku dipastikan.

Begitu sekelumit cerita tentang persiapan kami menyambut kehadiran Adek Bayi.

• Retiring the GDP (Gross Domestic Product)

The GDP statistic has to be retired. It is like an old shoe that no longer fits. GDP is fatally flaw

The GDP statistic has to be retired. It is like an old shoe that no longer fits. GDP is fatally flawed as a measure of economic and societal well-being and economists know it. Yet it is universally used to compare living standards and economic growth like one compares sports scores. Furthermore, as each nation compiles it a little differently, especially regarding the inflation ‘deflator’ component, such comparisons are nonsensical. What is exciting is that there are some old and new indices getting attention that could replace the GDP. This is most welcome.

Alternatives to the GDP
Technically, GDP is the total market value of all final goods and services sold in an economy in any particular time period. As we progress in an era of Enlightened Economics, it is destined to be superseded by new indices geared to more accurately measure affluence, sustainability and quality of life, generally. Such indices include the Index of Sustainable Economic Welfare (ISEW), the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), and variants of them. Other intriguing indices include the Calvert-Henderson Quality of Life Indicators, the UN’s Human Development Index, and the Invincibility Index. The common thread in these indices is that as well as including economic activity, they also account for societal and environmental factors related to real human development – which the GDP does not.

The GDP statistic should be retired because…
• According to economist Clifford Cobb and colleagues, “Much of what we now call the growth of GDP is really just one of three things in disguise: (1) fixing blunders and social decay from the past [paying for pollution, costs of crime, etc.]; (2) borrowing resources from the future [GDP excludes the costs related to farmland depletion, water, other resources]; or (3) shifting functions from the traditional realm of household and community to the realm of the monetised economy [i.e. eating out, rather than at home].” (Text in parenthesis has been added for additional clarity.) For a fuller explanation, see “What’s wrong with the GDP.”

• Losses associated with natural and man-made disasters are not deducted from the GDP. For instance, Hurricane Katrina brought mass devastation. Yet the enormous economic losses were not deducted from GDP. But the clean-up costs were added though!

• GDP does not account for the value of non-monetary, economic, transactions. Such activities would include elder care by family members, and volounteer activities. In 2002, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) found that such activities represented the following shares of economic output: up to 44% of GDP in developing nations, 30% in transition economies, and 16% in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) economies (Schneider and Enste, 2002). See The Genuine Progress Indicator 2006.

• GDP was initially created to measure WWII wartime production. Its principal creator Simon Kuznets cautioned that “[t]he welfare of a nation can scarcely be inferred from a measurement of national income” (Kuznets, 1934).

- There is even evidence that a focus on GDP at the expense of other quality of life indicators can lead a society to a false sense of worth and even create unhappiness. In The Loss of Happiness in Market Democracies published in 2000, Emeritus Professor Robert Lane of Yale University compiled exhaustive research data showing the relationship of GDP to increasing unhappiness. He states, “Amidst the satisfaction people feel with their material progress, there is a spirit of unhappiness and depression haunting advanced market democracies throughout the world…” From his perspective, the rigors of modern market economies increasingly create family and relationship break-ups with subsequent loss of companionship and happiness. Acknowledging this trend, the World Health Organization recently predicted that by 2020, depression will be the 2nd leading cause of disability, just behind cardiovascular disease. (However, with rising consciousness, I believe this trend will be reversed.)

GDP is short-sighted accounting. Things that bump-up GDP in the short-term often have harmful long-term human and financial consequences and costs.

From the foregoing it is clear that the GDP statistic has little relevance as a measure of our present day material and social well-being.

GDP provides a false sense of progress
Comparing the GDP to GPI (Genuine Progress Indicator) numbers illustrates how false is the sense of gain with the GDP in regard to our human condition. Look at this chart comparing the real (inflation adjusted) US per capita GDP and GPI growth between 1950 and 2004. Note how the GPI figure significantly lags GDP. It suggests that when items such as resource depletion, crime costs, and volounteer sector costs,’ etc., are accounted for, the per capita net benefit of a rising GDP is fully negated.

Source: (c) 2007 Redefining Progress

Retire the GDP now
Some of the ways social and non-market costs are included in the ISEW, GPI, etc., are definitely controversial. Perhaps for these reasons such indices have not as yet achieved common usage. But the GDP, created for the very reason of measuring WW11 wartime production, has been badly and wrongly used as a measure of our quality of life. Enlightened Economics demands the GDP be retired and replaced with more enlightened indices!

Propaganda.

The vision of a ‘green’ society often focuses on quality of life and well-being for all its citi

The vision of a ‘green’ society often focuses on quality of life and well-being for all its citizens. These ideas are evoked by way of a contrast with the quantity-oriented objectives of present day western consumer society: increasing personal financial wealth and individual consumption, economic growth and expanding business profitability. But just what is 'quality of life'? Some interesting ideas and insights come from the perspectives of economics, philosophy and psychology.

Economists have tried to gauge quality of life using the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), which is consciously designed as a counter to the familiar standard measure of total economic activity, Gross Domestic Product (GDP). As an indicator of economic and social ‘progress’, GDP is fairly useless because it merely delivers a summation of all spending, regardless of its nature. GPI is undoubtedly to be preferred because it adds in the economic value of unpaid work, and it subtracts negative factors such as crime, pollution and reductions in leisure time.

In an article in the LA Times, reproduced here, ecological economist Robert Costanza notes the significantly different trends to be seen in the way GDP and GPI are unfolding in the United States: "While the U.S. GDP has steadily increased since 1950 (with the occasional recession), GPI peaked about 1975 and has been relatively flat or declining ever since … This is a very different picture of the economy from the one we normally read about." Taking the argument further, Costanza cites Herman Daly in making a causal link between these two observations, and says that continuing growth in GDP is now "actually reducing [U.S.] national well-being".

More detailed information about GPI can be found here, along with a graph illustrating the trends Costanza is referring to.

This different measure of ‘progress’ certainly provides a welcome challenge to the widespread GDP-worship that occurs in the business pages of daily newspapers around the world. However, the use of quantitative means to evaluate a qualitative concept strongly suggests a fundamental mismatch between problem and methodology. By its very nature, the idea of quality of life is a complex, multifaceted concept influenced by both our cognitive and our emotional perceptions, and open to a wide variety of personal and social interpretations. It just doesn’t boil down to a number. We need to try another angle.

Philosophers have often pondered on the nature of happiness, and it is certainly a question that was actively discussed 2500 years ago. In an essay in Philosophy Today, Philip Cafaro writes that one important aspect of the debate, even in ancient Greek times, has been whether pleasure and physical satisfaction define our happiness, are an important part of it, or are simply irrelevant to happiness. While there were a wide range of views on this point among the Greek philosophers, "the major philosophical schools all preached limited consumption and disciplining appetite" because they accepted that the proper level of consumption was defined by the extent to which consumption contributed to "good human lives" (p.26).

For Plato and Aristotle, and for the Stoics as well as the Epicureans, as Cafaro explains, "the good life was equally a life devoted to right thinking and a life not devoted to wealth getting and sybaritism" (p.26). This view leads directly to the ancient Greek notion of eudaimonia, meaning happiness, wellbeing or flourishing understood in terms of ‘virtue ethics’. Cafaro provides a very simple interpretation of what that means today: "if our goal is to live well, we should consume less" (p.26).

In the context of environmental ethics, Cafaro recognises that this is different from the usual ethical arguments which suggest that we should cease or limit any actions that damage the ecosphere simply because of its intrinsic worth. What Cafaro advocates is a much more human-centred ethical position with an ecological spin-off: in order to improve our own wellbeing we should cease or limit our consumption. He maintains that "greater attention to our true happiness would do as much to protect wild nature as the greater acceptance of the intrinsic value of wild nature" (p.27).

Both of these arguments taken together often reinforce each other. But not always: self-denial for the sake of the environment does not necessarily enhance human happiness and, for just that reason, complete self-denial almost certainly does not make for a popular political creed. Promoting both perspectives – which we can perhaps characterise as ecological wisdom and social justice – seems to be essential to a successful green politics, but so does the ability to balance them where necessary. The need for effective ways to strike the balance between ecological wisdom and social justice is one of the challenges of pragmatic politics that greens must accept.

Our third perspective on quality of life comes from psychology. Counselling psychologist Michael Steger has written about his "happiness research" in a recent issue of New Scientist magazine. Steger and colleagues studied 65 undergraduates, using daily happiness questionnaires to assess how they were feeling, and daily activity records that recorded ‘virtue-building’ (eg volunteering time) and hedonistic behaviour (eg getting drunk). The principal finding is that the more virtue-building activity the students engaged in, the happier they said they were; moreover, there appeared to be no association between hedonistic behaviour and happiness.

Such studies offer an interesting insight into the cause-and-effect relationship between personal behaviour and personal happiness. But in reflecting on Steger’s happiness research and Cafaro’s environmental virtue ethics, it is important to remember that we cannot presuppose individual freedom of action. Regardless of one’s wish to act in a certain way, the ability to act virtuously (or hedonistically for that matter) is not free of constraints: socio-economic status, health status (eg addictions), marginalised status (eg, indigenous communities, women, youth), level of disposable income, education about and awareness of consequences, the desire to meet family commitments, the need to meet social expectations, and perhaps even just the amount of time available in our lives to do what we wish.

These constraints play a very significant role in individual well-being. The ‘self-discrepancy’ theory of E.T. Higgins suggests that if there is a significant gap between the ideal self (who I would like to be) or the ought self (who it is my duty to be) and the actual self, a considerable degree of dissatisfaction, unhappiness and even shame can result. One might even suggest that achieving happiness consists of minimising this gap. But Higgins' theory also indicates that those people whose reality is far from their own ideals, simply because of the constraints that beset their lives, would find it very difficult to achieve a sense of quality of life.

This again signals the emancipatory dimension to striving for wellbeing and quality of life. It is the reason why social factors are a key part of the GPI discussed earlier: quality of life is not simply about my personal happiness, my personal progress in life, or my personal virtue – quality of life only makes sense when our lives are understood in their social context.

Conferência Linux.Conf.Au:

GDP is not an indicator of anything. Take this admittedly imperfect, but IMHO quite relevant, analog

GDP is not an indicator of anything. Take this admittedly imperfect, but IMHO quite relevant, analogy. Shares in XYZ corp are selling for $100. Last year, they did a billion dollars worth of transactions. Are you buying or selling?

Personally, I’d need some more information. Forget about the obvious question of how many shares are outstanding, which is where this analogy has it’s imperfection, the government has no shares. This may be the only point of this analogy that really fails though.

Here’s some information you might ask about XYZ corp, all of which are pieces of information that you will never get from the GDP.

1) What percentage of the dollar value of the transactions were income?
2) What percentage of the dollar value of the transactions were expenses?
3) What assets does the company have?
4) What debt does the company have? (We know this figure at 8 trillion. However, it’s not in the GDP.)

So, the GDP is almost meaningless. All it is is a count of transactions. When Exxon spilled oil in Valdez, the $10 billion cleanup was ADDED to the GDP. That should have been counted as an expense and been SUBTRACTED. This type of thing makes the GDP among the worst indicators of the economy.

A number of alternatives are being suggested for the GDP.

Genuine Progress Indicator
Happy Planet Index
Environmental Sustainability Index

We need indicators that value resources. An 800 year old tree is highly valuable, even before it is cut down and sold in one piece to Japan. However, our government will sell them for $1 per tree and even come and cut the roads so that the timber companies can get to it easily. Why? Because the GDP and other economic indicators in use in this country and most of the world, do not give value to natural resources. How should we value an 800 year old tree? Well, how much would it cost to grow one?

This last may sound silly. However, from a sustainability point of view, that really is the value. Imagine a tree farm handed down for many generations. Enough trees must be planted so that one will live 800 years. At 800 that one is cut. The 790 year old tree is left, as is the 780, .... At 400, there probably have to be a few since some won't survive another 400 years. At 200, there must be more. At age 100 or less, there must be many. This takes a lot of land and many generations of care. If we want to sustainably harvest 800 year old trees, that's pretty much what it takes.

Of course, this is just an easy example that I like because most of us still see trees on a regular basis and are familiar with them. Similar examples can easily be made from mountaintop removal, strip mining, oil and gas drilling, ocean fisheries, etc.

Obviously, what we are doing today is not sustainable. At least part of the reason we do it is because of bad accounting.

Professor Peter Brown from McGill University in Canada is here in New Zealand speaking about our dysfunctional economic system.

He's not wrong there. He was speaking on Radio NZ but the interview never really got going. He had enough time to talk about the incoherent nature of our economic system, how GDP measures income and consumption but not well being and how triple bottom line accounting was a waste of time. Agreed!

What we need is a better connection between our biophysical system and our economic frameworks like Trucost for example.

We also need to ask ourselves some basic questions such as

- what is our economy for? speculation or sustenance.

- what size should it be? as big as possible or big enough.

Simple questions but rarely asked. The mantra of economic growth at all costs is intellectually flimsy. Its lazy thinking........the assumption that GDP growth is all that matters is quite clearly false.

What about crime, illness, pollution? What about the increasing gap between rich and poor.

As individuals we search for coherence but as a global economy we struggle to find that because there are no tools to do so. So perhaps by becoming more coherent ourselves we will aid and enable a global coherence.

As the Mahatma said "Be the change you wish to see".

Let's keep asking questions of our system.
