I want to put to rest any questions that my neighbors and New Yorkers may have about my home at Lenox Terrace. My family and I have resided at Lenox Terrace for more than 20 years. Lenox Terrace has been, and always will be, my home. It was my home before I became governor of this great state, and it will be my home long after.

The State of New York affords me a beautiful mansion in our capital, which is where my family and I live when we are in Albany, but the Governor’s Mansion is the people’s house.

It is a place where I enjoy welcoming visitors from around New York and abroad and from which I fulfill my duty of serving our great state.

That includes fighting hard not only to protect our existing affordable housing but also to continue to create new affordable housing across New York.

Early in June I urged residents in Michigan to implore Gov. Granholm to not veto the bill banning partial birth abortion in the state. Unfortunately, she did veto the bill and again ignored the majority of voters in the state who are against this dreadful practice. Of course, since this topic gets no coverage in the Michigan media, most people didn't know about the bill or about Granholm's veto (AGAIN!).

Here is a LINK to more about the veto.

One of the Democrats running for Delaware governor, Jack Markell, has been running ads on TV recently which strike me funny. Instead of pointing out Delaware's problems are the current leadership's fault, it would seem that Delaware's problems are President Bush's fault. Uh, Jack, Minner/Carney (Democrats) run the state, not Bush. Delaware's problems are clearly laid at their feet, not Bush.

Although with a second thought, Markell is trying to win the Democrat primary, so a little BDS works well with his party.

His ad, which has been on TV for a while, is finally on YouTube here.

freepress2@ntelos.net

Another afternoon, another dinner with a few dozen friends, another few thousand dollars to take back to the campaign treasurer, which ought to keep what could turn out to be a $25 million election going for, well, another hour or two, at the least.

Creigh Deeds has been down this road before, falling 360 votes short out of the 2 million or so cast of being our current attorney general. And now the Bath County state senator is running for the Democratic Party nomination for governor, and it's that quest that has him spending "80 percent of my time" on the road these days.

"We're trying to build a fund-raising base, but also I spend a lot of time just talking to different groups. I talked yesterday, for example, in Halifax County, with a group of people who aren't necessarily big contributors, but people who participate in politics. It's about building a base," said Deeds, who was in the Valley today for a fund-raiser at the White Star Mills in Downtown Staunton.

He didn't do badly on either count - 80 people were on hand for lunch, and the Deeds campaign raised more than $6,000 all told at the event. The question-and-answer session following Deeds' remarks to the assembled went on toward 1:30 p.m., about a half-hour past what was supposed to be the quitting time. Typical Deeds - he is not one to leave a question unanswered, or an important point unmade.

Deeds, who is competing with Northern Virginia state delegate Brian Moran for the 2009 nomination, is also not one to be afraid to mix it up a bit politically. He pointed out that no sitting member of the Virginia House of Delegates has ever been elected governor, not mentioning Moran by name, but letting those within earshot know the stakes at hand in what promises to be a pitched battle. I use that frame of reference because in an interview with me a few minutes earlier over lunch, Deeds made it clear that he's in it to win it as far as his nomination campaign is concerned.

"I would love it if someone would hand me the nomination, but it's not going to happen," he answered my question about whatever pressures there might be on himself and Moran to resolve the nomination without having to go to a convention or primary at the risk of splitting the Democratic Party.

"Politics is about competition, and competition is not a bad thing. So maybe there's pressure out there. If there is, I don't feel it," Deeds said.

I followed up with a question asking Deeds if he thinks there will be a resolution to the nomination contest before next spring. "There are lots of people who would like to resolve it. But I don't know how that's going to happen," Deeds said.

Deeds would prefer the fight be played out in a primary. "I think you can make the case for either one," Deeds said. "I've always liked primaries better, because they involve more people. It's more expensive, it's potentially more divisive, but the candidate hones his message, he gets out there, and the candidates have to work harder, and they're better-prepared for the fall elections having had to go through a primary. And there's more people participating. In a convention system, you might have twenty or thirty thousand people statewide participating. In a primary, you'll have two or three hundred thousand people participating."

But that's far off into the distance - 11 months and counting. And Deeds has millions of dollars to raise, and about a million hands to shake if he's going to be able to look back on '09 more fondly than he can '05. And while he can claim experience as a statewide candidate, he also concedes that "it's a different ballgame altogether" running for governor than it was running for attorney general.

"It's a big leap from an attorney general's race to a governor's race. While I was spending $3 million, and McDonnell was spending six the last time, both Kaine and Kilgore were spending about 25. It's a huge fund-raising leap. When you're running for attorney general, you're third on the ticket. When you're at the top of the ticket, all of the attention is on you," Deeds said.

Brian Moran's fundraising haul in the first six months of 2008 nearly doubled that of 2009 Democratic Party gubernatorial-nomination rival Creigh Deeds.

Moran, a Northern Virginia legislator and chair of the House Democratic Caucus, raised $1.38 million between Jan. 1 and June 30, according to campaign-finance reports filed with the State Board of Elections today.

Deeds, a Bath County state senator who lost a recount to Republican Bob McDonnell in the 2005 attorney-general race, raised $782,586 in the first six months of '08.

The Moran campaign reported $924,292 cash on hand as of June 30. Deeds had $650,452 cash on hand as of the end of the month of June.

Ronald Reagon was the 40th President of the United States from 1981 to 1989 and the 33rd Governor of California from 1967 to 1975. Born in Illinois, Ronald Reagan moved to Los Angeles in the 1930s. In July 1989, the Reagans took a trip to Mexico, where Ronald Reagan was thrown off a horse and taken to a hospital for tests. The Reagans returned to the U.S. and visited the Mayo Clinic where they were told President Reagan had a head concussion and a subdural hematoma, and was subsequently operated on. Doctors believe that is what hastened the onset of Alzheimer's disease, an incurable neurological disorder which ultimately causes brain cells to die, and something Reagan was diagnosed with in 1994.

Bill Clinton this Saturday spoke to the Semiannual gathering of the National Governor's Assocation. Speaking in his capacity as director of his global foundation, Clinton spoke little of the explicit political landscape approaching us in 2008.

One of the most interesting points in the 45 minute speech was that Clinton believes we're facing increased polarization. This seems to contradict a lot of pundits' views that Americans are growing sick of "partisan gridlock."

US Attorney Chris Christie, and probable 2009 Republican Gubernatorial candidate, has launched a probe of the activities of Governor John Corzine’s ex-girlfriend, and former Local CWA 1034 President, Carla Katz.

Some Democrats think this “doesn’t look right”, but where were these guardians of propriety and principle when Corzine was negotiating a new contract with Katz, who just happened to head the Union that represented the largest number of state workers? Something sure “doesn’t look right”, but it is the conduct of the Governor.

Do you remember a certain debate in Michigan, during the Republican primary season? The candidates w

Do you remember a certain debate in Michigan, during the Republican primary season? The candidates were asked if they felt the American economy was going into a recession and Mike Huckabee was the only candidate to really nail the issue on the head. You can read the full transcript of the debate at MSNBC.

You know, a lot of people are going to be watching this debate. They're going to hear Republicans on this stage talk about how great the economy is.

And frankly, when they hear that, they're going to probably reach for the dial. I want to make sure people understand that for many people on this stage the economy's doing terrifically well, but for a lot of Americans it's not doing so well. The people who handle the bags and make the beds at our hotels and serve the food, many of them are having to work two jobs, and that's barely paying the rent. And you know what else? They don't think that they can afford for their kids to go to college; they're pretty sure they're not going to be able to afford health insurance.

This was on October 9, 2007 and even then, Huckabee had a grasp of how the economy was really doing. The other candidates might have thought he was a fool, but he knew what he was talking about.

On the way to work this morning, I was listening to NPR and they were talking about the results of an NPR/Kaiser Family Foundation/Harvard School of Public Health poll. It was taking a look at Ohio and Florida and how the voters in these two swing states were feeling about the economy. You can read the full resulst of the poll here, but I want to point out something that I thought was very telling. The poll results state:

Like people in the nation as a whole, Ohioans and Floridians overwhelmingly say the national economy is in not so good or poor shape, and that now is not a good time to buy the things they want and need. Most people see power in the presidency to help fix the economy; eight in ten say that a president can do at least “a little” about the economy, including four in ten in Ohio and nearly half in Florida who think the economy is something a president can do “a lot” about. Fewer than one in five in each state say the economy is mostly beyond any president’s control.

Did you get what that said? People actually believe a President can do something to change the economic outlook of our country. Of course, that would have to be a President that didn't have the oil companies in his pocket. It might also have to be a President who knows what it is like to struggle to make ends meet. Maybe a President that understands how ordinary Americans fight every day to provide for their families and to give them something in life.

Does all of this sound familiar? Does it sound like President Bush? Does it sound like Hillary Clinton? Does it sound like John McCain or Barack Obama? I think not. If you have watched and lisented to Mike Huckabee for any length of time, you will know and understand how he empathizes with us as a person, family man/woman, or American. He understands how we are struggling every day.

Even though Mike Huckabee was virtually an unknown when he entered the Republican Presidential race, we knew by listening to him that he had what it took to be our President. That's why we fought tooth and nail to help him win the election. It wasn't just what he said, but also what he did about the issues he faced while Governor of Arkansas that drew our attention. He actually governed and got things done. Alas, it looks like 2008 is done for. We can only hope for 2012.

That's my take!

Larry

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger is an Austrian-American bodybuilder, actor, businessman and politician, currently serving as the 38th Governor of the state of California. He is married to journalist Maria Shriver and has four children.

During his first term as governor, Schwarzenegger signed a bill creating the nation's first cap on greenhouse gas emissions, which set new regulations on the amount of emissions that utilities, refineries and manufacturing plants were allowed to release into the atmosphere. Schwarzenegger also signed a second global warming bill that prohibits large utilities and corporations in California from making long-term contracts with suppliers who do not meet the state's greenhouse gas emission standards. Both bills were part of a plan to reduce California's emissions by 25 percent by 2020. In 2005, Schwarzenegger had issued an executive order calling to reduce greenhouse gases to 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.

Schwarzenegger signed another executive order on October 17, 2006 allowing California to work with the Northeast's Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by issuing a limited amount of carbon credits to each power plant in participating states, which is set to be in effect in 2009.

In addition to using his political power to fight global warming, the governor has taken steps at his home to reduce his personal carbon footprint. Schwarzenegger has adapted one of his Hummers to run on hydrogen and another to run on biofuels. He has also installed solar panels to heat his home.

On June 30, 2008, Schwarzenegger joined with California state treasurer Bill Lockyer and Tesla Motors to announce Tesla's decision to locate its new manufacturing facility in California. In addition, he announced that, as part of the state's ongoing commitment to clean technology, California will be instating a new program that waives the sales tax on investment in new manufacturing equipment for Zero Emission Vehicles.

This video is gold. Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina was on Late Edition Sunday. Wolf Bli

This video is gold. Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina was on Late Edition Sunday. Wolf Blitzer asked him a simple question, "What's the differences between McCain and Bush on the economy?". You would think they would have a well prepared answer to this question, seeing as how Obama has been pounding McCain on this issue. Well apparently its not an easy question, or maybe there really isn't any difference between Bush and McCain. I think there's no difference between McBush on the economy. Gov. Sanford, first goes blank, second he tries to duck the question, and then third he agrees with the fact that McBush isn't any different. I would also like to note that he also lies about what Obama would do to help the economy. Thee Wolf Blitzer asks him a stupid question, like is he being considered for VP. If he was considered then I think this interview took him off the list. Here's the painful video.

So, here's the difference between Bush and McCain on the economy. McCain wants to give even more tax cuts then Bush did (which was a lot) to the oil companies and the top 1% of Americans who are filthy rich. Other then that back when there were differences between Bush and McCain, McCain went back and agreed with Bush because he knew he couldn't get his party nomination without agreeing with Bush. Thus, there is no difference between McCain and Bush on the economy. So, Gov. Mark Sanford was right. Don't you just love surrogates.

Do I write poetry?
Man, what a question!
When I see daffodils I think
Of Wordsworth for sure;
Can any maid be
Plainer than his Lucy?
As for your Alexandrine:
It can rumble all the way
To Dover Beach for all I care.
Dover! Come Arnold I know you
Spoke so truly there,-
Schwarzenegger, is the other Arnold, I know,
But does he write poetry?
