$ sudo apt-get install googleearth-package
$ sudo googleearth-package

$ chmod  chmod +x GoogleEarthLinux.bin
$ ./GoogleEarthLinux.bin

Akan muncul jendela dialog seperti ini

[wp_caption id="attachment_229" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Jendela Awal Instalasi"][/wp_caption]

Tunggu sampai instalasi selesai:

[wp_caption id="attachment_230" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Instlasi Sedang Berlangsung"][/wp_caption]
[wp_caption id="attachment_231" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Instalasi Selesai"][/wp_caption]

Last night James, Tori, Olaf and myself were smoking outside the Standing Order on George Street.

James: Oh if only we were dead. How pleasant it would be, lying snugly together in the graveyard, fast asleep…

Tori: Why are you so gloomy this evening? Is it perhaps because somebody special is leaving?

Olaf: You’re leaving?

Tychy: She’s going to her husband’s farm in Portugal for the summer, to help him supervise the harvest. You’ll remember that idiot who was following her about - the one who couldn’t speak any English?

Tori: He can articulate his feelings when he wants to. I gather that he was rather unhappy about our last credit card bill.

Tychy: Well! She thinks that she’ll be sunbathing all day, but he’s of the alternative opinion that she’ll be tearing about in a combine harvester. It will all end in disaster. I hope that when they get divorced, Tori ends up with the farm.

James: Oh Victoria, please don’t go to Portugal. I can instinctively sense that you won’t enjoy it.

Tori: Why don’t you leave Edinburgh for a bit? When was the last time that you had a holiday?

James: I never go on holiday. I’m too delicate to travel and it jangles my nerves. Besides, everybody is here. Edinburgh is such a progressive cosmopolitan city - or at least it is for anyone under thirty, or for anyone who lives hand to mouth. Nationalism has never seemed so obsolete. Italians, Poles, Basques, Chinese, Brazilians, Australians - they're just cards which the city endlessly shuffles. And if the city deals so many exciting and challenging hands - and it offers so many adventures - then why bother to relocate to another city? It’s just a different coloured pack of cards.

Tori: But that’s a terrible attitude. If all of these people were just as lazy - sorry, as “delicate” - as yourself, then nobody would travel and there would be no cosmopolitanism.

James: Well I don’t so much admire cosmopolitanism as hate nationalism. Paradoxically, in a world in which cheap air travel allows tourist-migration and travel becomes an unremarkable commodity, the incentive to travel accordingly declines, because everywhere is the same, with the same commodities, services, educational resources and black market drugs, and the traveller needs to work harder and harder in order to glimpse something truly challenging and authentic.

Tori: But you can glimpse new things, or at least you can if you do some work. You once told me that you were a Surrealist, and that the whole point of that was to provoke all sorts of new, authentic reactions from a world of boring conformity. Surely travel can be part of that?

James: I guess so. But I recently wrote a piece for the website about Herman Melville’s novella “Benito Cereno” [“On Babo and Black Leadership”], and part of my research involved using GoogleEarth to find Santa Maria, the island featured in the story. And I swooped down on to the west coast of South America, I poured over the beaches and islands, I zoomed in and shot out and dipped back down again, when I found the island I circumnavigated it, I measured it and calculated the time it would take to row around the harbour, and I studied a dozen or so photographs of its beaches and hills. GoogleEarth is only in its infancy, but it’s already an incredible educational resource. And, of course, people mechanically resort to cynicism and small-mindedness…

Tori: It’s often said that when somebody installs GoogleEarth, the first thing that they do is look at their own house.

Tychy: I look in my neighbour’s gardens…

James: You prove my point. There is an instinctive miserablism and churlishness to most people, and they seem simply unable to say, “wow, what a fantastic invention! Just think of all the opportunities which this provides! Thank heaven for progress!” As the technology elaborates, GoogleEarth will resemble a sort of universe in your pocket, an encyclopaedic dimension, a flying carpet which will deliver you to anywhere in the world. And the individual will be reduced to a blob plugged into a hyperreality, his consciousness swooping and diving around the world, all obstacles to human travel emphatically defeated.

Olaf: Thank heaven for progress.

Tori: On the subject of the website, which of you was responsible for the article about the Maltese basketball player? [“On Samuel Deguara”]

James: I would never write about anything as vulgar as competitive sport.

Tychy: He did write that one. I certainly didn’t.

Olaf: That pissed off quite a few people, didn’t it?

James: It was a good article. When I briefly met Samuel Deguara, who was competing in the championships at the Pleasance, I was reminded of a nightmare about a giant which I had experienced when I was a child. The article was about a small man’s terror of a giant, it was not about Deguara himself. But I was naïve, and I didn’t think that any Maltese basketball fans would notice our little website. When it comes to information about Samuel Deguara, there is a shortfall between supply and demand. That article is the most popular on the website - it attracts a good quarter of the visitors to Tychy - and I only wish that Deguara’s fans would set up their own websites, so that we would not get quite so much of his Google traffic.

Tychy: I often think that there should be a gentlemanly agreement between those over six foot not to play basketball. Their participation is unsporting. They have a very unfair advantage…

James: The solution would be to erect a special hoop for the tall at a greater distance from the ground.

Tori: But you would get anarchy. Somebody would insist upon another hoop for those under five foot, and then another would be installed for children, and then another for people in wheelchairs…

Tychy: The game would become far more complex and strategic.

Tori: Did you see that Rafael Nadal won Wimbledon yesterday? He is such a gorgeous guy. I cannot believe that a single woman in the world supported Federer in that match. Even his own girlfriend.

James: Nadal looks a pleasant chap, but I’m a little afraid that he is not quite compos mentis enough to appreciate his victory. He spends his entire life playing tennis. He must have a very stunted appreciation of reality. If I won Wimbledon, I’d be driven around for a month in a limousine full of Champaign and prostitutes and heroin, shouting “I am invincible!” at people in the street. But one suspects that this sort of thing is beyond Nadal…

Tychy: I think that the more you play tennis, the more the mind is erased. Rubbed out by the sheer boredom of it all!

James: Look at Tim Henman! The great comedienne Linda Smith once remarked that he was the human personification of the colour beige.

Tori: Enough of this! Nadal is a superman and, significantly, he’s also Spanish. That country has won both Euro 2008 and Wimbledon, and their entry to Eurovision was the best in the contest this year. Let us drink to Nadal’s health.

Omnes: Cheers!

Girls from Godolphin and Latymer School in Hammersmith, west London, handed the shadow education minister a petition signed by 4,000 people.

He is backing calls to halt plans by the OCR exam board to end the subject.

Urging the government to step in Mr Johnson said the course was of huge importance to Britain and its culture.

Speaking outside parliament on Monday the Henley-on-Thames MP said it was important not to lose a subject which could provide a route to university for many people.

Religious confrontations

"I think you're getting rid of another potential route. Why not leave things as they are? It's a wonderful subject, it's well taught, let's encourage more people to do it," he said.

Natasha Hausdorff, 17, one of the sixth-form students leading the campaign, said she was fighting to preserve a subject she loved and which could teach youngsters about democracy, religious confrontations and east-west relations.

In March OCR said it planned to scrap ancient history saying revised A-level courses would offer students a better range of qualifications.

Elements of the old ancient history exam would be taken into a new classical civilisation A-level which will be taught from September 2008.

But some critics argued the new course would not examine ancient history properly.

(Text by Apollo Soft)

Woooo Hoooooooo! The gang's all here! When I arrived at the hotel (once again, my license was "declined" at the rental car agency. I showed them my brand new sparkling license and they said that it wasn't in the system yet. Oh, I love bureaucracy! It just took more time.)

Here are a couple shots from my short two hour flight on Alaska airlines:

But oh, I am in heaven. No more rain, temperatures in the 70's with a stiff breeze. The freeways aren't crowded - at least not when I was driving in - I had the windows down, the wind blowing through my hair and I remember how much I LOVE California. Thanks to GoogleEarth, I have the exact directions to the hotel, including fractions of miles travelled, and I get here without any mishap. There is ample parking. The reception is cordial and efficient, and . . . there is a big plate of chocolate chip cookies waiting to greet the guests.

My room is a hoot. The only thing missing is . . . AdventureMan. Oh, AdventureMan, you would love this place.

At 5, there is wine in the lobby. This week, ironically, it is wines from Washington State, which are good, but I just came from there! As it turned out, the red wine I had was excellent. The gang gathered, laughing and exchanging family lore, welcoming the bride into our very geeky and kookie family.

Now I have to apologize. We all went out and ate barbeque. I was SO hungry, I forgot to take photos. My bad.

This is the view from my room at sunset:

Do we need 3D? Are we wasting our time ? What are the main scenarios of monetisation? Aren't we just back to where we were in the early nineties with Virtual Reality games and all the investment that went into that technology.

3D immersive environments are being prepared to provide a rich user experience and interactio. Thus allowing application developers of the future to build rich applications. I can think of a few use case scenarios in city planning, crime heat map patterns thru time, pollution heat maps thru time (hmm, sounds like I may have already said this before).

Thats about all I can think of as potential applications at this point in time, but that is no reason to not build a data set that can open up the doors for developers to build applications that we today have not even thought off.

I should also add, like many others I do not completely buy into the 3d vision just yet. But its damn cool to work on and the potential is amazing. Lets see where this road takes us...

The entire premise of learning from history is that we should not repeat the same mistakes. This

The entire premise of learning from history is that we should not repeat the same mistakes. This is an area in which I’m horribly ill-equipped, and today I repeated a remarkably stupid mistake.

After procrastinating and finding every other possible chore to do beforehand, I delayed my 8am 12-mile run until 1:45pm. The process generally goes in a cycle of eating something, making sure it’s digested, procrastinating, getting hungry again, then eating again, and then waiting. It keeps going in this cycle, so after my noontime bagel, I decided that I was going for it, and a mere hour and a half later, I was off on my run.

First, the good. As I ran today I felt good. I quickly fell into a pace and trotted along the lake not breaking any speed records, but enjoying the feeing of being in complete control. My stride was strong and consistent, and with the exception of a tender hamstring from a few days ago, I was feeling pretty good. The plan was to run half of the Green Lake inner loop, then veer off into Woodland Park for some trail running, make my way over to the Woodland Park Zoo, do a few loops, and then run back to Green Lake for another outer loop. There would be a few additional twists and turns, but after mapping it out, I found that I’d be able to get my 12 miles with little difficulty. Planning difficulty, that is.

As I ran off the trail around Green Lake I was immediately struck by something I had not considered. Unlike maps, the real world is not flat. Also, the real world comes in more than 4 colors. This being the case, I was immediately confused and did my best to reconstruct the map in my head as I unceremoniously tripped over a root and fell on my face. With that out of the way, I picked myself up and continued in the direction of Woodland Park. Daunted by the task of running and estimating scale, I decided that the best course of action was to simply run until something looked familiar, a tactic that I’ve used more than once in my life, each time with disastrous results. Surely this would be different.

Surprisingly things began to materialize that held a degree of familiarity. After running through a main vein of park trails, I traversed a pedestrian walkway over Aurora Ave. On the other side was Woodland Park Zoo. With locked gates.

One of the fun aspects of GoogleEarth is that it doesn’t really distinguish where one legally can and cannot go. It seems like a lot to expect from a free program, but at the same time, it would lead a runner through a minefield, which seems to be just fine according to the engineers. I decide that when I get home, I’m going to map a run though the pentagon, Area 51, and any other area that I’ll never be able to go, just for the sake of getting angry at the google engineers.

Opting to run around the perimeter of the forbidden park, I actually gain far more mileage than I had expected, though I can’t really tell because I’m lost, off course, and getting thirsty. Anyone who runs will tell you that if you’re thirsty, it’s already too late. Additionally, they’ll tell you that you have to pay to get into the zoo and that you can’t just waltz in, not matter how good you look in running shorts.

After running back into the Green Lake Loop, trot back to my starting point, feeling pretty good. I stop for water again, stretch out, and continue on. The larger route is nicer because it’s more rugged, and there are fewer people on it. This is important today, since everyone who can walk (and a few who can’t) is out enjoying the sun. For me, it’s a battle between just being nice, and holding people accountable for their own stupidity. I am thrilled that this is such a happy-family place, but am markedly less thrilled when families of 5 decide that it’s a good idea to walk abreast with their leashed dogs sweeping back and forth for runners missed. More than once I consider education in the form of a swift kick to canine or child, depending on which can more easily be labeled an accident.

Sometime around the other side of the lake, the gas starts to run out. I do two large loops around Woodland Park, and by the time I’m running the second half home, I’m not doing so well. There’s a point in running where you hit a wall, and there’s a point in running where you cease to be a runner, and that’s where I am. My muscles, while tired, are not inoperable—they are just out of fuel, which is not surprising since I’ve now been running for more than two hours. My steps become sluggish, and as I close on the main street, I notice that I’m swaying a bit, which is not uncommon for me, but shouldn’t be happening on this short of a run.

Things start to come together at home after I’ve stretched, taken a cool-down walk, and have drunk a nalgene of water. I feel terrible, but the wrong kind of terrible. Feeling lousy after running is nothing new—but after I’ve drunk another Nalgene, I realize that I’m in more trouble than I thought. Sitting on the couch, I start swallowing a lot. In panic. And then I realize; I’m going to throw up. Another realization hits me as I draw on that precious running experience: I’m dangerously dehydrated.

This has happened once before with similarly unenjoyable results. My body is now dehydrated beyond thirst, and it won’t accept water. The last time this happened, I was on a 20-mile run in June. A 12 mile run in March shouldn’t have the same effect, especially since this one was through a drinking fountain populated park. But here I am. The prescription is worse than a hangover, and lying on the couch doing my best not to vomit up the water already in me, I set my watch for two minutes, fill the Nalgene, and take a gulp every time the watch goes off. If you’ve never tried simultaneously taking something in while note letting something else out, I suggest you try it. It will give a whole new appreciation for how Hendrix died.

Two hours and four Nalgenes later I’m finally able to pee, and standing in the bathroom I feel the raking pain of a migraine that will be with me for the rest of the night. Another hour later I’m able to eat something, and an hour after that I’ve completed eating every thing that I can get my hands on. Seven eggs, a bagel, some pasta, three cookies, a bowl of Lucky Charms, and a bratwurst soundly replace the calories I have burned and then some. Too wired to sleep to in too much pain to go out to the Little Red Hen with everyone, I stay in and watch “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” with no guilt since my brain can be used for little more than a pain reservoir right now. Periodically limping downstairs to switch out laundry loads, I finish off the evening with the most wonderful thing imaginable: a sleep in a real bed. After over a month and a half in a sleeping bag, I finally assemble the sheets and sleep like a squatter rather than a homeless person. It’s a good feeling to move up in the world.

Aufladen dauert keine Stunde.

Wer also seine Fotos "zukunftssicher" aufnehmen will,

Google Banned From Military Bases
Last Updated: Friday, 7 March 2008, 05:45 GMT

There are concerns that detailed maps may threaten security

The US defence department has banned the giant internet search engine Google from filming inside and making detailed studies of US military bases.

Close-up, ground-level imagery of US military sites posed a "potential threat" to security, it said.

The move follows the discovery of images of the Fort Sam Houston army base in Texas on Google Maps.

A Google spokesman said that where the US military had expressed concerns, images had been removed.

Google has now been barred from filming and conducting detailed studies of bases, following the discovery of detailed, three-dimensional panoramas online - and in particular, views of the Texan base.

It said such detailed mapping could pose a threat.

Google spokesman Larry Yu said the decision by a Google team to enter the Texas base and undertake a detailed survey, had been "a mistake".

He told the BBC News website that detailed study of such sensitive sites was not Google policy.

Last week I was at a conference of digital geographers. There was much talk of how Google Earth has changed the public's appreciation of their subject, but now Microsoft seem have gone one better.

The company is to launch a new tool called WorldWide Telescope. This uses computer visualisation techniques to hitch together feeds from a number of different satellites and scientific telescopes to create a navigable image of the universe – stars, solar systems and galaxies. It is described in Microsoft's pre-launch video as providing "a kind of magic carpet that lets you navigate the universe".

It's going to be freely available from Spring 2008. All we need now is a guide with "Don't Panic" written on the front cover.

Ok, so the first web2.0 tool I'm going to have the students use is Voicethreads. The first web2.0 tool that I used for my students was Google Earth. Our second graders are learning about biographies and I know as first graders they celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday last March ,so they have some background knowledge about him. So, I put together a biography of Dr. Seuss on Google Earth. The students watched the show and took notes on a graphic organizer. (Note: Next year watch the show first, then go back and watch it a second time and take notes.) Now, we're going over our notes together, discussing good introductory sentences and beginning to write a biography about Dr. Seuss as a partner activity. For right now we're just typing in Word. The next step will be for each child to do an illustration in Kidspiration2 or Paint. Then finally, we'll "publish" our story in Mixbook by copying and pasting our text and inserting our illustrations and photographs from the web. Hopefully, we'll have this done in March and we can invite the first graders in to hear our stories. Only seeing the students once every 6 days for 40 minutes means it takes a long time to complete a project! Any suggestions on other tools I should use or any other suggestions are always welcome!

To view the Google Earth presentation click on View Larger Map and then click on View in Google Earth or it can be viewed from Google Maps as well.

A week or so ago, fellow blogger Macaholiq8 mentioned StatCounter in his entry, and how much fun he was having with it. I had a couple minutes, so I took a look, and signed up to give it a try.

Oh, what fun.

It doesn't work on all WordPress functions - or maybe it would if I knew how to tell it to, but the things it doesn't do for me - analyze key words, most viewed pages, etc - WordPress does just fine.

UPDATE: THANKS TO YOUSEF at Some Contrast who rescued me with the key key command to take a photo of my visitor map:

What StatCounter does is something else. My very favorite part is looking at where the viewers are coming from, they divide it up, give you percentages. I can see that a lot of schools in the United States follow the blog, but also, people in Australia, China, Iran - oh, it is so much fun to see all the drops show up on the map.

You can get an idea what StatCounter can do for you at their website demo:

StatCounter Demo

And it's free. You can buy upgraded service that gives you more, but for me, and for right now, the free service is just fine, fascinating, really.

Thanks, Mac, for a great recommendation.
