1. The audio is out of sync with the video. I'll have to fiddle around with the settings for CamStudio to try and fix this. It's also possible that my computer is just too old and getting a faster computer would fix this problem.

2. The uploaded video has blurry text. I tried uploading the AVI video that CamStudio generates to Google video and Youtube. Youtube generated a better result from the Avi video. But I'm still not happy. I might try creating the video with a different resolution or maybe try Vimeo which I believe has higher resolution videos.

Anyways it was a fun experience creating a screencast and I'm sure to do it again.

It amazes me how much D's little brain absorbs, the slightest mention of "Lazytown" will cause him to sing the theme tune "Go go go get up Lazytown", Dan can just whistle the tune and Declan will go running to the telly singing "Go go go!" waiting for it to come on. He hardly watches much telly but he's somehow become obsessed with this one show, it's crazy. I'm starting to think that there might be something in all that "Sports Candy" that Magnus Scheving eats.

After a long drive (and several potty breaks), we made it to Red Lake safe and sound! We're settling in and getting acquainted with our work crews and getting ready to head out tomorrow to begin our work.

Pay attention to branding. So... an adorable cat, an ad, and a video that breaches DailyMotion's Terms of Use. Frankly, I was a bit disappointed (unless there's a hidden meaning that I'm not in on). If I was working at WordPress, I like to think I would've done something better. Maybe three cat videos! Or even three of these.

Stephen King, James Patterson, Nora Roberts, Janet Evanovich, Tom Clancy--These are authors whose names are now recognizable brands. Anything they put their name on sells. While we might not become mega-brands over night, we can't get started down the path with a few simple steps.

Yesterday, Allie Boniface offered some great tips on promotion. Today, I'll add to her great suggestions while still keeping with the theme of book/author promotion on a budget.

1. Join online writers' groups. Absolute Write is the forum in which I am most involved. But, professional organization such as RWA and SCBWI usually have boards to which you can belong. Verla Kay Blue Boards are great if you are a children's writer. While most of the time you don't meet these people face-to-face, you begin to feel like you "know" them. I have felt compelled to buy several books from Blue Board writers. Moreover, other writers on the site tend to want to promote their own. A lot of support was thrown behind Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely and Ink Exchange as well as all of the Jennifer Lynn Barnes book by their fellow Blue Boarders.

2. Email Signatures. Put a standard signature in your emails about your book and a link to where people can find more information. This way, you don't give yourself the option to pick and choose who you will tell about your book. You're emailing your college professor? Ok, well, he knows about it now. Don't be embarrassed. People are curious and will probably take the time to check that link.

3. Blog. I have been persuaded to buy books because of author blogs. The only reason I picked up Lisa Shearin's books was because I read her blog daily. I feel invested in what she has to say. Don't discount the importance of a blog just because it seems like everyone is doing it.

4. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Ask you friends to provide a link to your site or a blurb about your book on G-chat or on their Facebook status. Word-of-mouth is a huge component of book and author success. Widen your radius.

5. Your book can have a Facebook Page. No, faces are not required to belong to facebook. Make your book a member and then add as many people as possible as your friends. Also, on your own facebook account, how many people on facebook are friends that you actually chat with daily? Yeah, probably a minority, right? Start a group and invite everyone to belong to it. When the random person you went to middle school sees the group they are probably going to be like, Wow so-and-so wrote a book! And then you pray that random middle school person is curious enough to run out and buy it.

6. Contact your local newspaper. Most newspapers don't have a problem with running a "Local girl pens novel" story. Send them a media package.

7. Run a contest for Amazon reviews. Lisa Shearin did this recently. Every person who posted an Amazon review was entered to win prizes on her blog. Amazon reviews matter when it comes to Amazon rankings. Remember that.

8. The Internet is your friend. Book trailers on YouTube and Google Video. Twitter. MySpace. LiveJournal. Do them all.

9. Ask for interviews. Most of the time, people are not going to come beating down your door asking for an interview. It's ok to ask someone whose blog you like to host you for a day. What is the worst that could happen?

10. Have a cyber launch party. Avoid the costs of a real live launch party and have a cyber one. You can even wear your PJs. Places like Enduring Romance host online parties for book releases and, if you have doubts about their effectiveness, they bring in TONS of comments from readers!

11. Cheap promotional giveaways. Want to send some gear to conferences or be able to provide goodies for prizes. Consider having your book title/logo put on a few goodies. There are a ton of places you can have this done. A Cheap Giveaways you can get pens with a logo on them for $.31 a pop. At the minimum of purchase of 428 pens, that will cost you $132. Not too bad.

12. Write Great Books. That's the most important. And Guess what? The cheapest! Though the most time consuming. Look at The Shack, a book that is currently topping the bestseller list. $300 used to promote it. But, it's a good book and, through word-of-mouth, it spread like wildfire.

Status: Today I'm cracking down. My goal is to finish between 12-15 pages of script today. I'm working toward that July 18th deadline of getting our proposal together to submit. The query letter is almost done. I'm waiting on some artwork. I've been chipping away at the script. And, I just downloaded a trial version of Comic Book Creator 2 because I think I am going to do the lettering for at least the first 15 pages in order to submit. I'm debating whether or not to purchase the software, but at $50 I think it is probably worth it.

SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge has ordered Google to turn over to Viacom its records of which users watched which videos on YouTube, the Web’s largest video site by far.

The order raised concerns among YouTube users and privacy advocates that the video viewing habits of tens of millions of people could be exposed. But Google and Viacom said they were hoping to come up with a way to protect the anonymity of the site’s visitors.

Viacom also said that the information would be safeguarded by a protective order restricting access to the data to outside lawyers, who will use it solely to press Viacom’s $1 billion copyright suit against Google.

Still, the judge’s order, which was made public late Wednesday, renewed concerns among privacy advocates that Internet companies like Google are collecting unprecedented amounts of private information that could be misused or fall unexpectedly into the hands of third parties.

“These very large databases of transactional information become honey pots for law enforcement or for litigants,” said Chris Hoofnagle, a senior fellow at the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology.

For every video on YouTube, the judge required Google to turn over to Viacom the login name of every user who had watched it, and the address of their computer, known as an I.P. or Internet protocol address.

Competición de contenido: Digamos que estos sitios no son para artistas ni documentales, sino para contenido mas informal, borrachos en la calle, gente haciendo cosas raras, videos graciosos. etc.

• Addicting Clips: Están asociados con Atom Films y premian con $500 a los vídeos que eligen. Eso sí, nadie sabe como juzgan a los vídeos para elegirlos.
• Break: Te premian con $2000 si tu vídeo es mostrado en su página de inicio, $25 si se muestra tu foto.
• VidMax: Lo mismo que Addicting Clips, $500 si eligen a tu vídeo.
• WeWin: Este sitio premia por ver y subir vídeos. Consigues más puntos subiendo videos, pero los precios son más bajos, como cupones de $10 en Amazon.
• Votigo: Sitio dedicado a la competición, creas una, la gente vota y el ganador es declarado. No tiene mucha fama todavía, pero eso puede ser bueno. Algunas competiciones tienen muy pocas entradas y muy buenos premios. A lo mejor tienes el material ganador.

Google Ad Words: Algunas páginas tienen Ad words de Google cerca de los vídeos que subes, y te ofrecen una parte de sus ganancias.

• Flixya: La parte buena es que puedes subir tus vídeos al sitio y ganaras el 50% de las ganancias, por otro lado, si tienes tu propia página web porque no usas tus propios ad words y ganas el 100%?
• Blip.tv: Esta empresa ofrece muchas opciones bastante curiosas para poder trabajar a parte del Ad words, similar a los demás sitios.
• Vume: Antes conocido como Eefoff. Su oferta es similar a la de los otros, ponen anuncios a los costados, y ganas dinero.
• GoChongo: Otro sitio con idea única, los productores ponen unas normas y lo que quieren, tu les haces el trabajo y luego hay una votación, el que consiga mas votos gana y le pagan.

Vendiendo tu contenido: Para algunas empresas este método sigue funcionando, a cambio de otras que intentan probar otros métodos como los anteriores mencionados. Sé que hay varias páginas vendiendo películas y vídeos profesionales, pero no estamos discutiendo de eso ahora. Esto es acerca de lugares en los que tu o yo podemos vender nuestros vídeos.

• Turn Here: Originalmente esto era una red abierta, subías tu vídeo, posiblemente sea elegido, etc. Ahora es más una red de vídeo aficionados conjunto con una red de pequeñas empresas. Si crees que has hecho un vídeo decente y estas en Miami, te lo harán saber y te harán una escena.
• Veoh: Parece que estos muchachos tengan los medios para conseguir cualquier cosa. Tienen todo lo que se necesita para hacer video-demanda.
• HungryFlix: Habrá miles de sitios como este el próximo año. Te registras, subes tu vídeo, la gente te paga, fin. Los vídeos “How-to” se están haciendo muy famosos.
• Brightcove: Tremor Media y Brightcove se unieron para combinar la red de anuncios con los espacios para publicidad. En su demo demuestran como se pueden subir vídeos para vender. En su página aún no esta la opción pero se prevee que esta en camino.

Publicidad integrada: Publicidad para blogs, por ejemplo.

• Revver: Revver ofrece ganancias de 50/50 cuando subes tu vídeo. Como las otras páginas que ofrecían anuncios integrados, estos no están destinados a conseguir tráfico en exceso. A cambio hacen que eso sea tu trabajo. Uno de los sitios mas populares para hacer dinero con vídeos.
• BrightRoll & AdBite: Estos son 2 empresas que ofrecen integrar sus anuncios en tus vídeos. Si posees el próximo vídeo que crees que tendrá un millón de visitas y un blog decente, registrarte en uno de estos sitios, utiliza su reproductor y conviértete en oro.
• Lulu.tv: Ofrece el 80% de las ganancias para tí, y el 20% para ellos. Funcionan con anuncios de Yahoo mientras ves los vídeos, lo malo es que no hay muchos usuarios en el sitio.

Otras páginas que merecen la pena ser revisadas:

• Metacafe: No hay publicidad en estos vídeos, si llegas a las 20,000 vistas y un decente rating, te empiezan a pagar $5 cada 1,000 vistas. Hay varias personas que han echo buen dinero con este sitio. Algunos videos son denegados por diferentes razones, pero se puede ver como la gente gana dinero. Lo mejor de todo es que metacafe es muy conocida y recibe muchas visitas, por lo tanto no es difícil conseguir 20,000 vistas.
• Google Video: He escuchado muchas historias acerca de sus intenciones, aunque de momento nada al respecto. Quizás alguien tenga algo que comentar acerca de este servicio, actualmente no hay forma de conseguir dinero con él.
• ROO Media: Si tienes buen material que publicas de forma a menuda, la sindicación es lo mejor que puedes hacer.
• Current.tv: Tiene muchas opciones para que consigas dinero. Puedes hacer propaganda para marcas, promos para el sitio y más. Es un sitio único y creativo, si te gustan los vídeos estarás contento de contribuir aunque no ganes dinero.
• SMS.ac: Esta red social tan conocida te ofrece subir tu vídeo por $0.99. Los usuarios pueden poner su vídeo en su página inicial por una cantidad, y el publicista recibe una parte. No te va a convertir en rico, pero muchos vídeos consiguen mas de 300 descargas.
• Cruxy: Este sitio se centra en bandas y artistas intentando vender su contenido. Una cosa interesante que tiene cruxy es el reproductor portátil que crearon para los usuarios de Second Life.
• Helpful Video: En esta página te pagan por que les enseñes a hacer cosas, subes tu vídeo enseñando algo en particular, y te pagan. Si realmente sabes hacer algo valioso podrías ganarte unos cuantos dolares.

Actualización: tampoco hay que olvidarse de Youtube, que como bien comenta rené también reparte ingresos, lo único que lo hace solamente entre los usuarios con mucha antigüedad que suben contenido muy visitado.

Conclusiones:

1. Si tienes un vídeo y crees que puede triunfar, yo utilizaría Metacafe o Revver. Si es doloroso, sexy o inmaduro postealo en los sitios de contenido también.
2. Si tienes una visión lejana de que postearás vídeos cortos de forma habitual, utiliza Brightcove o ROO.
3. Si tu sitio tiene mucho tráfico, piensa en AdBrite
4. Si quieres vender tu vídeo, yo esperaría a que Google saque algo del mercado, o si lo quieres hacer ya, utilizaría Turn Here.
